  1. I promised you I'd start each sermon in the Ecclesiastes series with a classic rock song, but I failed this morning.

  2. ! In a Barna survey of former churchgoers from 2014, Kerry Newhoff reports that these are the top reasons why people no longer attend church.

  3. First, irrelevance, hypocrisy, and moral failure. Second, God is missing in church. Third, legitimate doubt is prohibited. Fourth, they're not learning about God. Five, they're not finding community.

  4. Now, this is a survey that focused on those who were former churchgoers, those who had attended for a while and experienced these disappointments.

  5. They went to church seeking meaning, hope, love, forgiveness, something, spiritually hungry, and they found that they did not find what they were looking for.

  6. And the disappointment is doubly so, right? Because if you can't find those things in church, good heavens, where can you find them?

  7. This, of course, is the experience not only of those who have been to church, but also of those who visit churches, those who have a spiritual interest or hunger.

  8. And they're looking and they sometimes go to church and find these similar dynamics.

  9. Raising a question in our hearts when we walk into the house of God, what might we find?

  10. This is the question that the writer of Ecclesiastes wants us to wrestle with this morning.

  11. So, we're going to look at the beginning of chapter 5, verses 1 through 7.

  12. And that's on page 520 in the Pew Bible.

  13. If you want to turn there, that's where you can find it.

  14. And remember, as we turn there and look to the Scriptures, that what we've seen in chapters 1 through 4 is this.

  15. The writer of Ecclesiastes is leading us on a journey seeking for meaning.

  16. And his conclusion may be summed up in chapter 1, verse 14, where he says this,

  17. I've seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

  18. He keeps looking in different places in work and pleasure and wisdom, understanding, even in the halls of justice.

  19. And he finds not substance, not meaning, not life, not eternal things, but empty, meaningless, insubstantial, and ephemeral life.

  20. And he's on this journey going, where can I find this?

  21. And where do I go?

  22. And what do I do?

  23. Will we find vanity?

  24. Or is there something better?

  25. And today he says, when I go into the house of the Lord, will I find vanity or will there be something better?

  26. This is what we're talking about this morning in our passage.

  27. So let's pray and ask for God's help, and then we'll read the passage together.

  28. Lord, we do come to you this morning, Lord, humbly acknowledging how easily, Lord, we don't worship you.

  29. How easily we fall short of what you would have us do.

  30. And Lord, we also confess our disappointments, Lord, and our struggles.

  31. Lord, where we have come and left feeling empty.

  32. Lord, we pray this morning that you would help us through your word.

  33. Lord, I pray for your help that you would help me to speak the words as I ought to.

  34. Lord, that we would together sit under your word and receive it and respond to it as you would have us do.

  35. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  36. Amen.

  37. Ecclesiastes 5, 1 through 7 says this.

  38. Guard your steps when you go to the house of God.

  39. To draw near, to listen, is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.

  40. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God.

  41. For God is in heaven, and you are on earth.

  42. Therefore, let your words be few.

  43. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool's voice with many words.

  44. When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools.

  45. Pay what you vow.

  46. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

  47. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake.

  48. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?

  49. For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity.

  50. But God is the one you must fear.

  51. In the house of God, will we find vanity or something better?

  52. As with these other topics, as we've tried to explore them as he leads us on this journey,

  53. the writer Caholet, if you remember, that's what his name is, preacher, teacher, whatever,

  54. in chapter 1, however you want to translate it.

  55. He gives us a realistic view of the house of God under the sun.

  56. He describes the vanity of religion, and he suggests that there may be something more for us to find.

  57. So, we're going to look at those two things in sequence.

  58. First, in the house of God, you will find vain religion.

  59. Now, I wanted to find my term here because religion is a word that might be used in various different ways.

  60. It might be used to say religion reflects the basic human impulse to seek spiritual truth.

  61. It might be the formal communal belief system.

  62. So, a religion would be Islam or Hinduism or Christianity.

  63. If you read older Christian writings, the Puritans and people like that,

  64. they will talk about religion in a very positive way as meaning faithful Christian orthodoxy.

  65. So, we just need to be careful.

  66. I don't mean really any of these things.

  67. What I mean by religion is the human activities that one might do in order to achieve a standing before God or other human beings.

  68. Religion is spiritual practices that are doing things in order to gain something from others.

  69. And, of course, it's challenging because as we look at people from the outside, we don't know why they're doing it.

  70. So, we always need to be careful and humble about our judgmental attitudes towards others when we see them.

  71. But we need to recognize that there is this religious impulse to do things in order to gain meaningful life in the words of Ecclesiastes

  72. or in the broader words of the Scriptures to gain our salvation with God.

  73. And Kohelet is warning us about the reality of vain religion in the house of God.

  74. He talks about three things.

  75. He talks about sacrifices.

  76. He talks about prayer.

  77. And he talks about vows.

  78. In verse 1, he talks about the sacrifices of fools.

  79. And why are they foolish?

  80. Because they don't know what they're doing and they don't know why they're doing it.

  81. And I think that underneath it, there is an impulse.

  82. We do these sacrifices not coming to God knowing our desperate need and wanting to receive from Him,

  83. but rather to perform for God to build ourselves up by doing the things that we would do.

  84. And we might do this consciously.

  85. I know God needs me to do these things so that I'm okay with Him.

  86. God requires this.

  87. It may be that we do these things because we don't know any better,

  88. because we're just following along with the traditions that we grew up with.

  89. All of these things are possible.

  90. Think about the sacrifices that we bring in our modern Protestant church,

  91. our singing, our giving, our listening to the Word of God.

  92. Do we do this with the spirit of saying,

  93. I checked a box today.

  94. I went to church.

  95. God is pleased with me.

  96. I gave.

  97. Isn't that good enough?

  98. I served.

  99. Isn't that good enough?

  100. I sung.

  101. Isn't that good enough?

  102. God, now aren't you pleased with me?

  103. Will you now give me what I want?

  104. This seems to be the heart that Koholet is revealing in the sacrifice of fools.

  105. And we need to ask ourselves, do we do the same?

  106. Now, Koholet's audience is not just words.

  107. It seems that he's getting at the thought that is common,

  108. that if we pray more or pray louder or pray with more energy or more ecstasy or more fervency,

  109. that God listens to us more because of our more words.

  110. But this reveals to us, doesn't it, that we think that our prayer is somehow going to manipulate or move God to do something that he wouldn't want to do.

  111. Or it's to look good before God or others by saying, look at what a great prayer I am by my many words.

  112. And then he goes on in verses 4 through 6 and he talks about vows.

  113. Now, vows in the Old Testament often came along with sacrifices.

  114. The thought was, if I make a sacrifice and I make a vow to worship God or to do something for God,

  115. then he will respond to me.

  116. The idea here is a little bit of like the foxhole vows that we make.

  117. God, if you get me out of this circumstance, I will do X.

  118. I will stop drinking.

  119. I will go to church every Sunday.

  120. I will give 50% of my income to the church.

  121. I will, whatever it is, we make these outrageous vows

  122. in an attempt to get something from God.

  123. Now, look, it's great to be zealous.

  124. And there are times when God calls us to make commitments for Him,

  125. but we need to be careful.

  126. I am a card-carrying member of the Bachelor to the Rapture Club.

  127. When I was a sophomore in college,

  128. me and my friends founded the Bachelor to the Rapture Club

  129. because we thought it was the vow that we needed to make to really focus on Jesus

  130. and not think about girls at all.

  131. It's ridiculous, right?

  132. This is a rash vow.

  133. I do not recommend this as a path for those of you young men who are thinking about it,

  134. or young women who are thinking this might make sense.

  135. Look, I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole.

  136. I'm just going to say, this was a rash vow.

  137. Within a year, I was dating.

  138. Maybe you have made vows like New Year's resolutions.

  139. I'm going to read the Bible every day.

  140. I'm going to read through the Bible in a year.

  141. We need to be careful because this zeal,

  142. though it is a normal human impulse,

  143. it is not actually worship to God,

  144. but it is vain religion

  145. because it ends up being about,

  146. I need to perform this.

  147. And when we fail,

  148. we dishonor God.

  149. This is what he says in 4 through 7.

  150. If we fail,

  151. we don't reflect a God who keeps His promises,

  152. a God who is truth,

  153. a God who always is yes and amen

  154. to the things that He has said that He would do.

  155. And we, we have a tendency to say,

  156. oh, I didn't really mean that, God.

  157. We excuse it.

  158. When someone challenges on,

  159. did you follow through with it?

  160. So he says we need to be careful

  161. because these vows are so often

  162. another expression of this vain religion.

  163. religion, this vain religion that says,

  164. if I do these things,

  165. God will see me

  166. and He will think something of me

  167. because I do them.

  168. I will gain standing with Him.

  169. I will gain even my salvation with Him.

  170. Right?

  171. There are some churches that would teach,

  172. you must do certain rituals,

  173. certain practices in order to be saved.

  174. There are certainly world religions

  175. that would say the same thing.

  176. This is the heart for Koholet

  177. of vain religion.

  178. So we've been warned

  179. when you come into the house of God,

  180. and I don't mean out there,

  181. I also mean in here,

  182. we've been warned of the danger

  183. of vain religion.

  184. How do we respond to this?

  185. Now, some of us

  186. come to church,

  187. and we've found it to be

  188. an incredibly wonderful,

  189. life-giving experience.

  190. And we respond to this kind of description

  191. defensively.

  192. No, no, that's not what it is.

  193. That's not what I've experienced.

  194. Church has been life for me.

  195. It's been such a wonderful place.

  196. I worship God when I go to church,

  197. and it's been such a good thing.

  198. And while I am sympathetic to this response,

  199. and I pray that this would be true

  200. of our church and of our gathering,

  201. I want us to reflect and ask the question

  202. that Koholet is asking us.

  203. To what degree is our worship vain?

  204. Are our church practices empty?

  205. Do we gravitate towards checking boxes

  206. or worshiping that's more about me

  207. than about God?

  208. It's more about my experience

  209. rather than the reality of God.

  210. It's more about my preferences

  211. than the Word of God.

  212. It's more about my reputation

  213. than the reputation of God.

  214. It's more about my spiritual success

  215. than the glory of Christ.

  216. We need to ask ourselves that question

  217. in our own hearts individually

  218. and for ourselves corporately.

  219. Do we promote or do we cherish

  220. or do we allow our hearts

  221. to fall into this vain worship?

  222. But secondly, there are some of us

  223. who are here,

  224. but we've already felt the sting

  225. of disappointment

  226. because we've come to church

  227. with high ideals,

  228. great expectations, desires,

  229. and we come in here and we think,

  230. oh no, this church isn't that at all

  231. or it's not enough for me

  232. and I feel disappointed.

  233. I feel hurt because I thought

  234. this church was going to give me something

  235. that I wanted it to give me

  236. and it didn't.

  237. And to you, I would say,

  238. recognize that Kohelet

  239. is warning us

  240. this will be true.

  241. Now, there's hope for you.

  242. We'll get to that

  243. as we go on in our sermon.

  244. But recognize that your idealism

  245. may not reflect the reality

  246. of life under the sun.

  247. And if you remember in Ecclesiastes,

  248. life under the sun

  249. is without reference to God.

  250. And in life under the sun,

  251. we do live under it

  252. and we may be subject to it.

  253. And there are some of us,

  254. and of course, this is a danger

  255. because I'm probably preaching

  256. to the wrong people about this,

  257. but there are some of us

  258. who will dismiss church altogether

  259. because of that disappointment.

  260. But there probably aren't here.

  261. But if you are here

  262. and you're tempted

  263. because you see the whole thing

  264. as a show of hypocrisy,

  265. because you have experienced

  266. the depth of that disappointment

  267. to a point where you just think

  268. you want to cast it all off,

  269. recognize that what Kohelet is saying is

  270. be prepared for the reality

  271. of what you will find,

  272. but also hear the call of God

  273. and what God's Word says

  274. about what it can be

  275. and what it should be.

  276. Because God's Word says more

  277. than just this

  278. about entering into the house of God

  279. and what we will find.

  280. So, for instance,

  281. regarding sacrifices,

  282. hear what David wrote

  283. in Psalm 40, verses 6 through 8.

    Psalms 40:6–8

  284. He said,

  285. In sacrifice and offerings

  286. you have not delighted,

  287. but you have given me an open ear.

  288. Burnt offering and sin offering

  289. you have not required.

  290. And then I said,

  291. Behold, I have come

  292. in the scroll of the book.

  293. It is written of me.

  294. I delight to do your will.

  295. Oh, my God.

  296. Your law is within my heart.

  297. Now, David lived

  298. in the time of the temple.

  299. He sacrificed at the temple.

  300. It's not that temple sacrifices

  301. didn't happen.

  302. But what David shows

  303. is what God really cared about

  304. in the Old Testament

  305. as well as in the New Testament

  306. is our heart posture

  307. to delight to come to the Lord,

  308. to receive from Him,

  309. and to do His will

  310. because He gives us

  311. and instructs us

  312. and shows us

  313. the path of life

  314. that He has given us.

  315. Or remember the words

  316. that Jesus spoke

  317. in the Sermon on the Mount

  318. regarding prayer

  319. in Matthew 6,

    Matthew 6:5–8

  320. verses 5 through 8.

  321. And when you pray,

  322. you must not be

  323. like the hypocrites,

  324. for they love to stand

  325. and pray in the synagogues

  326. and at the street corners

  327. that they may be seen

  328. by others.

  329. Truly I say to you,

  330. they have received

  331. their reward.

  332. But when you pray,

  333. go into your room

  334. and shut the door

  335. and pray to your Father

  336. who is in secret,

  337. and your Father

  338. who sees in secret

  339. will reward you.

  340. And when you pray,

  341. do not heap up empty phrases

  342. as the Gentiles do,

  343. for they think

  344. that they will be heard

  345. for their many words.

  346. Do not be like them,

  347. for your Father knows

  348. what you need

  349. before you ask Him.

  350. You see,

  351. vain religion

  352. isn't about relating

  353. to a heavenly Father.

  354. It's about trying

  355. to please

  356. some divine monarch,

  357. some dispassionate ruler.

  358. But Jesus says,

  359. you come

  360. and worship

  361. a heavenly Father

  362. who hears your words,

  363. who knows what you need,

  364. and who loves.

  365. So come to Him humbly,

  366. knowing that you can't

  367. manipulate Him

  368. from your prayer,

  369. but that by your prayer

  370. you express your need

  371. for Him

  372. and allow Him

  373. to meet you

  374. in that moment.

  375. So the Bible says

  376. there's something better.

  377. There's something better

  378. with God.

  379. The passage

  380. that George read earlier,

  381. the parable

  382. of the wheat

  383. and the weeds

  384. is a really striking one,

  385. right?

  386. Because the parable

  387. is about

  388. God planting

  389. the seed

  390. of the good news

  391. of the kingdom of God

  392. in the world

  393. and in the church,

  394. and then

  395. as He plants it,

  396. there's another seed sown,

  397. and so the wheat

  398. and the weeds

  399. grow up.

  400. And the servants say,

  401. well, should we just

  402. destroy it all?

  403. Should we try to purify

  404. this now?

  405. Should we clear this field

  406. so that it can be

  407. only wheat?

  408. And God says,

  409. no, because if we do that,

  410. the wheat that is there

  411. will be destroyed.

  412. So instead of destroying

  413. that wheat,

  414. we will allow the weeds

  415. for a time,

  416. and then

  417. in the harvest,

  418. when it comes,

  419. we will separate out

  420. the wheat

  421. and the weeds,

  422. and the weeds

  423. will be burned up.

  424. They will suffer

  425. judgment

  426. and condemnation.

  427. But for the wheat,

  428. there is a gathering

  429. into the barns

  430. of the Master

  431. brought into

  432. the household

  433. of God.

  434. And this is the picture

  435. that He gives.

  436. Jesus says in the end,

  437. God will judge

  438. all vain religion.

  439. And He will

  440. recognize

  441. true worship.

  442. And He goes on

  443. to say,

  444. and the kingdom

  445. of God,

  446. that true worship

  447. is like a mustard seed

  448. that grows

  449. unseen

  450. and unlooked for.

  451. But it will produce

  452. a harvest

  453. unbelievably great.

  454. And God

  455. is doing

  456. these things.

  457. And so,

  458. as we go back

  459. to Ecclesiastes,

  460. does He say

  461. these things?

  462. Does He point us

  463. in these directions?

  464. Well, I think He does

  465. in two places

  466. in our passage.

  467. Look with me

  468. in verse 2.

  469. Be not rash

  470. with your mouth,

  471. nor let your heart

  472. be hasty

  473. to utter a word

  474. before God.

  475. For God is in heaven

  476. and you are on earth.

  477. Therefore,

  478. let your words

  479. be few.

  480. God is the

  481. sovereign creator

  482. of all things.

  483. And He hates

  484. vain religion.

  485. He hates

  486. your posturing,

  487. your pride,

  488. your religious performance.

  489. He hates

  490. the religious pretense.

  491. And He will

  492. shut the mouths

  493. of those

  494. who babble

  495. foolish prayers.

  496. He will reject

  497. the sacrifices

  498. of those

  499. who do not listen

  500. and obey

  501. His Word.

  502. in chapter 5,

  503. verse 7,

  504. He says,

  505. for when dreams

  506. increase

  507. and words

  508. grow many,

  509. there is vanity,

  510. but God is the one

  511. you must fear.

  512. And we will see

  513. this thread pulled

  514. throughout all

  515. of Ecclesiastes

  516. that though life

  517. under the sun

  518. is full of vanity

  519. and emptiness,

  520. there is a way forward

  521. and it has to do

  522. with God

  523. and with fearing Him

  524. and fear not

  525. in an abject,

  526. terrified way,

  527. but in an awe-filled

  528. wonder

  529. at how great

  530. the God

  531. who is the creator

  532. and the sustainer

  533. and the redeemer

  534. of all things

  535. is.

  536. He is altogether

  537. righteous

  538. in His judgments.

  539. He is awesome

  540. in His majesty

  541. and His power

  542. and we stand

  543. in awe of Him

  544. because He is not

  545. under the sun,

  546. but He is the one

  547. who created

  548. all of life.

  549. And He is not only

  550. the creator and judge,

  551. but He is the redeemer.

  552. In the fall,

  553. our hearts are bent

  554. towards vain religion.

  555. We seek to make ourselves

  556. right before God,

  557. but He has been working

  558. out a plan of redemption

  559. that would do something

  560. remarkably different

  561. to redeem us

  562. and to free us

  563. for true worship.

  564. So, Jesus reminds

  565. the Samaritan woman

  566. in John 4,

  567. you remember,

  568. He meets the Samaritan woman

  569. at the well

  570. and she,

  571. after having had her sin

  572. exposed by Him,

  573. she's like,

  574. well, what about worship?

  575. Where can we worship?

  576. And Jesus says to her,

  577. woman, believe me,

  578. the hour is coming

  579. when neither on this mountain

  580. nor in Jerusalem

  581. will you worship the Father.

  582. You worship

  583. what you do not know,

  584. we worship what we know,

  585. for salvation is from the Jews.

  586. But the hour is coming

  587. and is now here

  588. when the true worshipers

  589. will worship the Father

  590. in spirit and in truth,

  591. for the Father is seeking

  592. such people to worship Him.

  593. God is spirit

  594. and those who worship Him

  595. must worship Him

  596. in spirit and truth.

  597. And the woman said to Him,

  598. I know that Messiah is coming,

  599. He who is called Christ.

  600. When He comes,

  601. He will tell us all things.

  602. And Jesus said to her,

  603. I who speak to you

  604. am He.

  605. You see, friends,

  606. this is God's plan.

  607. This is God's hope

  608. for His house

  609. is that Jesus has come

  610. to make a house

  611. that is full of people

  612. who worship Him

  613. in spirit and in truth

  614. to rescue us

  615. from our vain religion.

  616. How can He do this?

  617. Because of what the writer

  618. in Hebrews 10,

  619. 5 through 10 says.

  620. Listen to these words.

  621. Consequently,

  622. when Christ came into the world,

  623. He said,

  624. sacrifices and offerings

  625. you have not desired,

  626. but a body you have prepared for me.

  627. In burnt offerings

  628. and sin offerings

  629. you have taken no pleasure.

  630. Then I said,

  631. behold,

  632. I have come to do

  633. your will, O God,

  634. as it is written of me

  635. in the scroll of the book.

  636. And when He said above,

  637. you have neither desired

  638. nor taken pleasure

  639. in sacrifices and offerings

  640. and burnt offerings

  641. and sin offerings.

  642. These are offered

  643. according to the law.

  644. Then He added,

  645. behold,

  646. I have come to do your will.

  647. He does away with the first

  648. in order to establish the second.

  649. And by that will,

  650. we have been sanctified

  651. through the offering

  652. of the body of Jesus Christ

  653. once for all.

  654. This, friends,

  655. is the good news of the gospel

  656. that Jesus has come

  657. and done the offering

  658. that is necessary

  659. for us to be right with God

  660. so that we no longer

  661. have to work

  662. and our worship

  663. is no longer performance

  664. but response

  665. because Jesus went to the cross

  666. and died on the cross

  667. for our sins.

  668. He did the work

  669. that was necessary

  670. for our forgiveness

  671. and for our redemption.

  672. Because He rose from the dead,

  673. He is able to give us

  674. new and spiritual life

  675. which will last for eternity,

  676. which frees us

  677. from the deadness

  678. of human religion

  679. so that we can worship Him

  680. in this new life

  681. filled with the Holy Spirit

  682. so that we might worship Him

  683. as we ought to

  684. in response to all that He has done.

  685. This is the good news

  686. of the gospel.

  687. And this is our freedom

  688. from vain religion.

  689. And Lord, may it be true

  690. that Trinity is a house

  691. where this gospel truth

  692. is like a fountain

  693. that overflows

  694. in our hearts

  695. individually

  696. and as a community.

  697. Now, as we close,

  698. we're going to observe

  699. the Lord's Supper.

  700. And I want to take

  701. a few minutes

  702. to talk about

  703. the Lord's Supper

  704. because

  705. is there no other place

  706. in our worship service

  707. that we are most prone

  708. to vain religion

  709. than this?

  710. Right?

  711. It would be so easy

  712. for us

  713. to come

  714. and to eat the bread

  715. and to drink the cup

  716. believing that God

  717. accepts us

  718. because we are

  719. taking communion

  720. rather than

  721. taking communion

  722. because God

  723. has already accepted us.

  724. It would be so easy

  725. for us to believe

  726. that taking communion

  727. will move God

  728. to bless us

  729. and do good for us

  730. and answer our

  731. particular prayers

  732. rather than taking communion

  733. because He has already

  734. blessed us

  735. with every spiritual blessing

  736. in Christ.

  737. It would be easy

  738. for us to

  739. not take communion

  740. because we think

  741. I'm unworthy.

  742. I'm too unperfect.

  743. My sin

  744. is great

  745. and

  746. I don't think

  747. I can do this

  748. rather than coming

  749. to the very place

  750. where we

  751. recognize

  752. and remember

  753. the forgiveness

  754. of our sin

  755. achieved in Christ.

  756. It would be easy

  757. for us

  758. to think

  759. that we

  760. take communion

  761. because if we don't

  762. God won't save us

  763. rather than

  764. taking communion

  765. because

  766. He has

  767. saved us.

  768. Listen to the words

  769. of institution.

  770. This is what Paul wrote

  771. in 1 Corinthians 11.

  772. For I received

  773. from the Lord

  774. what I also delivered

  775. to you

  776. that the Lord Jesus

  777. on the night

  778. He was betrayed

  779. took bread

  780. and when He had

  781. given thanks

  782. He broke it

  783. and said

  784. this is my body

  785. which is for you

  786. do this

  787. in remembrance

  788. of me

  789. and in the same way

  790. also He took the cup

  791. after supper

  792. saying

  793. this cup

  794. is a new covenant

  795. in my blood

  796. do this

  797. as often

  798. as you drink it

  799. in remembrance

  800. of me

  801. for as often

  802. as you eat

  803. this bread

  804. and drink this cup

  805. you proclaim

  806. the Lord's death

  807. until He comes.

  808. This is why

  809. we do this

  810. we do this

  811. to remember

  812. to remember

  813. His body

  814. broken for us

  815. His blood

  816. that was shed

  817. for us

  818. and the redemption

  819. that He has done

  820. and as we respond

  821. we ought to ask

  822. the Holy Spirit

  823. to help us

  824. maybe we will feel

  825. joy

  826. because we have

  827. remembered

  828. that God

  829. has rescued us

  830. from sin

  831. in Christ

  832. we may feel

  833. thankfulness

  834. because of the

  835. costly love

  836. that Jesus showed

  837. we may feel

  838. conviction of sin

  839. because we haven't

  840. put God

  841. in the middle

  842. of our lives

  843. or in the middle

  844. of our worship

  845. we may feel

  846. strength

  847. in God's presence

  848. that God

  849. who has rescued us

  850. will continue

  851. to strengthen us

  852. to pursue Him

  853. even through

  854. great trials

  855. whatever it is

  856. the heart

  857. not the ritual

  858. is the goal

  859. and as we come

  860. to the table

  861. my prayer is

  862. that we will

  863. worship Him

  864. in spirit

  865. and truth

  866. this morning

  867. is the
