  1. Okay, team, we continue our series in the doctrines of grace.

  2. If we were to pose to Scripture the question, take me to the very beginning of my salvation,

  3. ! the very dawn of its unfolding, the very fountainhead of its first springs, where would

  4. Scripture lead us? Its answer is a beginning before our beginning. It would trace the fountainhead

  5. of our salvation to an ancient choice. What do we mean by ancient? If our thoughts could

  6. strain to make the journey, back to the beginning of time, back when the morning stars were begotten

  7. and the galaxies sprang forth and the sun and the moon were launched into their orbs by the

  8. word of God's mouth, back farther still when our created world slept in the mind of the

  9. Creator. There, we, the elect people, before we even had a created existence, were the objects

  10. of God's loving purpose. But here, inevitably, words fail. For how could we designate a time

  11. before time? The Apostle's phrase is simple, yet majestic. Before the foundations of the world.

  12. Ephesians 1.4. It was then the triune God set their loving choice upon their beloved, a people who would

  13. become the everlasting bride of the Son who would take on flesh. There is the fountainhead of our salvation,

  14. an ancient choice and purpose of God, an ancient compact of Father, Son, and Spirit to unite

  15. everlastingly with the people of their sovereign, gracious love. Across the pages of Scripture,

  16. the objects of this ancient choice are called God's elect. The Apostle expresses to the Thessalonian

  17. believers, we are bound to give thanks always for you, brothers and sisters, beloved of the Lord,

  18. because God has, from the beginning, chosen you to salvation. 1 Thessalonians 2.13 and 14.

  19. Spurgeon once said of this verse,

  20. If there were no other text in the sacred word except this one, I think we should all be bound to

  21. receive and acknowledge the truthfulness of the great and glorious doctrine of God's

  22. ancient choice of God's life. True enough, it would suffice, but it need not, for such assertions

  23. crowd the sacred text. From Abram chosen out of all the multitude of nations and their brimming

  24. population, through the patriarchs and through Israel, as the psalmist exclaims in wonder,

  25. blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his inheritance.

  26. Psalm 33.12.

  27. At the coming of Christ, we have his choosing of a new Israel in union with himself, the twelve.

  28. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, John 15.16.

  29. A new people of his choice, elect from every tongue, tribe, and nation, described as, quote,

  30. chosen and destined by God the Father. 1 Peter 1.12.

  31. Some of those elect now gathered around the heavenly throne.

  32. Others in the midst of their earthly pilgrimage of faith.

  33. Others still chosen, but yet to be gathered by the proclamation of the gospel.

  34. As the apostle Paul wrote momentarily in prison as he sought to reach the ends of the earth with his gospel

  35. proclamation, I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation

  36. that is in Christ Jesus, 2 Timothy 2.10.

  37. So God chooses his elect.

  38. The expression is really redundant, for that's precisely what elect means.

  39. Chosen.

  40. As to the basis of this ancient choice, we are not told what inspired or revoked it,

  41. other than God's good pleasure expressed in the language of love.

  42. He simply declares of Christ's bride to be,

  43. I have loved you with an everlasting love.

  44. Jeremiah 33.3.

  45. Or as Moses told the Israelites,

  46. Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens,

  47. the earth and all that is in it.

  48. Yet the Lord has set his heart in love on your fathers

  49. and chose their offspring after them, you above all the peoples.

  50. Deuteronomy 10.14 and 15.

  51. Though beyond his own distinguishing love,

  52. we are not told what his choice is based upon,

  53. it is clearly disclosed to us what it is not based upon.

  54. It is not based upon our worthiness.

  55. As if the choice were somehow predictable and evident by virtue of some distinguishing quality in us,

  56. the beloved.

  57. As if the choice were elicited and found its source and origin in some attractiveness or excellency

  58. or comparatively surpassing virtue of our own.

  59. No.

  60. The testimony of Scripture is uniform and forceful in shutting the door on that supposition.

  61. As Moses assured Israel concerning God's choice of them,

  62. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession

  63. out of all the peoples who were on the face of the earth.

  64. It was not because you were more in number than the other peoples

  65. that the Lord set his love on you and chose you.

  66. For you were the fewest of all the peoples.

  67. Note bene, don't flatter yourself.

  68. No, it was because the Lord loves you.

  69. Deuteronomy 7.6 and 7.

  70. It is as if Scripture knew such a supposition would naturally occur to us.

  71. The recipients of his loving choice.

  72. Imagining that something native to us caught the divine eye

  73. and ensorcelled his heart and so elicited his choice.

  74. We flatter ourselves to imagine his choice of us as somehow explicable

  75. in virtue of our superiority, whether number or character

  76. or some endearing attractiveness relative to others.

  77. That the ground of God's selection of us is our blue ribbon qualities.

  78. Bigger, better, faster, stronger, wiser, more virtuous, more faithful, more pious.

  79. And so more worthy than the competition.

  80. Such a notion the Scriptures soundly dispel.

  81. Such self-congratulatory fancy is snuffed out.

  82. Taking the very categories we naturally think might commend us to God's choice of us.

  83. Eye-catching wisdom, power, nobility, strength.

  84. The apostle writes to the believers in Corinth.

  85. For consider your calling, brothers and sisters.

  86. Not many of you were wise according to worldly standards.

  87. Not many were powerful.

  88. Not many were of noble birth.

  89. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.

  90. God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

  91. God chose what is low and despised in the world, even the things that are not,

  92. to bring to nothing things that are,

  93. so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

  94. 1 Corinthians 1, 27-29.

  95. Spurgeon observes of this passage getting to the heart of the matter as he always does.

  96. We select those who are best because they are most deserving.

  97. He, God, selects those who are worst because they are least deserving.

  98. That so his choice may be more clearly seen to be an act of grace and not of merit.

  99. Spurgeon goes on to observe how very gracious God's choice is.

  100. For he writes, what a fabulous thought this is.

  101. God's choice is gracious even in its exclusion.

  102. It does not say, Spurgeon writes, not any wise man.

  103. It only says not many.

  104. So that the great ones are not altogether shut out.

  105. Isn't that marvelous?

  106. Even gracious in his exclusion.

  107. At least one is appreciated at this point.

  108. The Countess of Huntington of English nobility upon reading these verses exclaimed,

  109. Thank God for the M.

  110. Thankfully, it does not say not any of noble birth, but not many of noble birth.

  111. Thank God for the M.

  112. Clearly, Scripture inscribes false over the notion that it is anything in us,

  113. whether nobility or ignobility,

  114. or any virtue or excellency or religious or moral exertions

  115. or attainments that elicit God's choice.

  116. As the Apostle insists concerning God's election,

  117. it depends not on human will or exertion,

  118. but on God who has mercy.

  119. Romans 9, 16.

  120. One vivid way Scripture rather forcefully makes this point,

  121. excluding our imagined superior profile or fancied worthiness

  122. and underscoring its sheer graciousness,

  123. is by asserting that God's choice of his own

  124. was before they had any possible worthiness at all,

  125. for it was a choice of them before they were born.

  126. Thus, before they could have assembled some supposedly impressive,

  127. morally majestic, or religiously resplendent CV.

  128. As the Apostle presses,

  129. taking the example of the twins,

  130. Jacob and Esau,

  131. I mean twins,

  132. I mean about as close as you can get,

  133. He writes,

  134. though they were not yet born

  135. and had done nothing,

  136. either good or bad,

  137. in order that God's purpose of election might continue,

  138. not because of works,

  139. but because of him who calls,

  140. she, the mother,

  141. was told the older will serve the younger.

  142. As it is written,

  143. Jacob I have loved,

  144. but Esau,

  145. I hate it.

  146. Romans 9,

  147. 11 through 13.

  148. To clarify the matter,

  149. we might frame the question this way.

  150. What is cause,

  151. and what effect?

  152. Does God's choice flow from our goodness,

  153. good works as scripture often terms it,

  154. or do our good works flow from God's choice?

  155. which is the cause,

  156. which the effect?

  157. Here again,

  158. the scripture is crystal clear.

  159. As the Apostle writes to the Ephesians,

  160. even as God chose us in Christ

  161. before the foundation of the world,

  162. that we should be holy and blameless before him.

  163. 1-4.

  164. That,

  165. we should be holy,

  166. expresses purpose.

  167. We are chosen not from our good works,

  168. but for good works.

  169. Why is this so seemingly important

  170. for scripture to clarify?

  171. Because there is a vital principle

  172. and purpose at stake.

  173. The insistent principle

  174. is what we have abundantly seen,

  175. that God's choice of his elect

  176. is gracious.

  177. It is all of grace.

  178. God's choice is according to his own free favor,

  179. utterly unconstrained

  180. or influenced

  181. by anything that arises

  182. from the objects of his choice.

  183. There is no cause

  184. or trigger

  185. of God's choice

  186. in the elect.

  187. The ground and cause

  188. has its source

  189. and sustenance

  190. entirely

  191. and exclusively

  192. in the heart of God

  193. and his heart purposes.

  194. There is in the gospel

  195. an illuminating phrase

  196. Jesus said of

  197. those full of animosity

  198. toward him

  199. they hated me

  200. without a cause.

  201. John 15 25

  202. That is,

  203. they hated me

  204. without there being

  205. any cause in me

  206. to elicit their hatred.

  207. It arose entirely

  208. from their own heart stance.

  209. And so it is

  210. with God's loving election

  211. where we might equally say

  212. God lovingly elected me

  213. without a cause.

  214. That is,

  215. without a cause in me.

  216. Literally in the Greek

  217. gratuitously

  218. or gift wise.

  219. One might even

  220. translate that

  221. graciously.

  222. They hated me

  223. graciously.

  224. And why

  225. is this

  226. of crucial significance?

  227. That God's election

  228. of his beloved

  229. is a gracious choice.

  230. grace.

  231. Ah,

  232. because

  233. it is his grace

  234. that God seeks

  235. marvelously to display.

  236. It is his grace

  237. that is so praiseworthy.

  238. As the apostle

  239. writes to the Ephesians,

  240. God chose us

  241. according to the purpose

  242. of his will

  243. to

  244. the praise

  245. of his glorious

  246. grace.

  247. Ephesians 1.6

  248. That is,

  249. the unfathomable

  250. graciousness

  251. of his electing

  252. choice of his people

  253. will be the

  254. ceaseless theme

  255. of God's

  256. eternal praise.

  257. The great

  258. non-perial display

  259. of his glory.

  260. And because

  261. his electing love

  262. is all of grace,

  263. without a moat

  264. of credit

  265. going to us,

  266. so shall

  267. no speck

  268. of praise

  269. be transferred

  270. from the creator

  271. to the creature.

  272. All of grace

  273. means

  274. none of us.

  275. Not to us.

  276. Not to us,

  277. O Lord.

  278. But to thy name

  279. be glory.

  280. Psalm 115.1

  281. Thus,

  282. there is not

  283. a dry

  284. morsel of credit

  285. to energize

  286. a breath

  287. of self-congratulation.

  288. So,

  289. as the apostle

  290. expresses it,

  291. so that

  292. no human being

  293. might boast

  294. in the presence

  295. of God.

  296. 1 Corinthians 1.29

  297. This

  298. is what is

  299. at stake

  300. and the ultimate

  301. purpose

  302. behind the principle,

  303. God's exclusive

  304. and unrivaled

  305. glory

  306. with which

  307. he will share

  308. with none.

  309. For as

  310. Jehovah declares,

  311. I am the Lord.

  312. That is

  313. my name.

  314. My glory

  315. I will give

  316. to no

  317. other.

  318. Isaiah 42.8

  319. Now,

  320. if,

  321. or rather

  322. since,

  323. this is

  324. indeed

  325. the testimony

  326. of Scripture

  327. that God

  328. elects to salvation

  329. those he will

  330. passing over

  331. others

  332. according to

  333. his sovereign

  334. unconstrained

  335. choice,

  336. perhaps

  337. one may

  338. feel

  339. what we

  340. might call

  341. splinters

  342. in our

  343. sensibilities.

  344. Let us

  345. acknowledge

  346. and interrogate

  347. some of

  348. these splinters.

  349. Here's

  350. one

  351. which has

  352. been voiced

  353. and

  354. perhaps

  355. we may

  356. feel,

  357. we ourselves

  358. may feel it,

  359. maybe even

  360. forcefully.

  361. if

  362. God

  363. chooses

  364. some

  365. to life

  366. and not

  367. others

  368. based

  369. alone

  370. on his

  371. sovereign

  372. choice,

  373. that

  374. doesn't

  375. seem

  376. fair.

  377. A

  378. distinguishing

  379. love?

  380. A

  381. choice

  382. of some

  383. and not

  384. others?

  385. Jacob,

  386. have I

  387. loved?

  388. Esau,

  389. have I

  390. hated?

  391. This is a

  392. hard saying.

  393. Who can

  394. hear it?

  395. It

  396. certainly

  397. cuts against

  398. our

  399. contemporary

  400. notion

  401. that

  402. none

  403. should get

  404. favored

  405. treatment.

  406. It

  407. rubs us

  408. the wrong

  409. way,

  410. that

  411. anyone

  412. should get

  413. anything

  414. not given

  415. to all.

  416. Indeed,

  417. in our

  418. times,

  419. this is a

  420. sensibility

  421. on steroids.

  422. John Rawls,

  423. the political

  424. theorist,

  425. asserts that

  426. our liberal

  427. democracy

  428. here in

  429. America

  430. is based

  431. on this

  432. notion

  433. of fairness.

  434. But

  435. the

  436. scriptures

  437. challenge

  438. this

  439. sensibility

  440. and

  441. reframe

  442. the

  443. relevant

  444. issue.

  445. they

  446. recognize

  447. the

  448. objection

  449. but

  450. pose

  451. a

  452. counter

  453. question.

  454. As

  455. the

  456. apostle

  457. states

  458. in Romans

  459. 9,

  460. 14,

  461. what shall

  462. we say

  463. then?

  464. Is there

  465. injustice

  466. on God's

  467. part?

  468. By no

  469. means.

  470. For God

  471. says to

  472. Moses,

  473. I will

  474. have mercy

  475. on whom

  476. I will

  477. have mercy.

  478. and I

  479. will have

  480. compassion

  481. on whom

  482. I will

  483. have

  484. compassion.

  485. That is

  486. the

  487. scriptures

  488. response

  489. to our

  490. dis-ease

  491. with

  492. an

  493. assertion

  494. of God's

  495. sovereign

  496. prerogative.

  497. He has

  498. mercy

  499. on whomever

  500. he

  501. wills.

  502. Verse

  503. 18.

  504. This is

  505. the

  506. decisive

  507. answer.

  508. But the

  509. apostle

  510. recognizes

  511. that for

  512. some

  513. this

  514. dis-ease

  515. may not

  516. be entirely

  517. set to

  518. rest

  519. by this.

  520. Puzzles

  521. persist.

  522. So he

  523. continues.

  524. Will you

  525. say to

  526. me then,

  527. why does

  528. God still

  529. find fault

  530. for who

  531. can resist

  532. his will?

  533. Ah,

  534. but this

  535. persistent

  536. question

  537. fails to

  538. recognize

  539. whose

  540. will

  541. it is

  542. we are

  543. speaking

  544. of.

  545. It is

  546. the will

  547. of the

  548. creator

  549. who

  550. as

  551. creator

  552. has

  553. sovereign

  554. rights

  555. over his

  556. creatures.

  557. So as the

  558. apostle insists,

  559. who are

  560. you,

  561. O man,

  562. to answer

  563. back to

  564. God?

  565. Will

  566. what is

  567. molded

  568. say to

  569. the

  570. molder?

  571. Why

  572. have

  573. you

  574. made

  575. me

  576. like

  577. this?

  578. Has

  579. the

  580. potter

  581. no

  582. right

  583. over

  584. the

  585. clay

  586. to

  587. make

  588. out

  589. of

  590. some,

  591. out

  592. of

  593. the

  594. same

  595. lump,

  596. one

  597. vessel

  598. for

  599. honorable

  600. use,

  601. and

  602. another

  603. for

  604. dishonorable

  605. use?

  606. Verse 20

  607. and 21.

  608. Notice

  609. the

  610. apostles

  611. reframing

  612. the issue

  613. from one

  614. of

  615. fairness,

  616. whatever

  617. shape-shifting

  618. sense that

  619. term has,

  620. to

  621. justice.

  622. Is there

  623. injustice on

  624. God's part

  625. by no

  626. means?

  627. Verse 14.

  628. Jesus

  629. takes up

  630. the same

  631. question

  632. and answers

  633. it in the

  634. same key

  635. as the

  636. apostle.

  637. In his

  638. parable of the

  639. laborers in the

  640. vineyard,

  641. Matthew 20,

  642. at day's

  643. end,

  644. the

  645. master

  646. pays

  647. some

  648. a day's

  649. wage

  650. for a

  651. day's

  652. work.

  653. Good to

  654. his pledge

  655. to give

  656. whatever

  657. is right.

  658. Verse 4.

  659. He acts

  660. in regard

  661. to some

  662. according

  663. to strict

  664. justice.

  665. To others,

  666. astonishingly,

  667. he gives

  668. with extravagant

  669. generosity

  670. a whole

  671. day's

  672. pay

  673. for a

  674. mere

  675. hour's

  676. work.

  677. He acts

  678. according

  679. to grace.

  680. When those

  681. dealt with

  682. according to

  683. strict

  684. justice

  685. grumbled

  686. and protested,

  687. the master

  688. replies,

  689. Friend,

  690. I am

  691. doing you

  692. no wrong.

  693. Did you

  694. not agree

  695. with me

  696. for a

  697. denarius,

  698. a day's

  699. wage

  700. for a

  701. day's

  702. work?

  703. Take

  704. what belongs

  705. to you

  706. and go.

  707. I choose

  708. to give

  709. to this

  710. last worker

  711. graciously.

  712. Am I

  713. not allowed

  714. to do

  715. what I

  716. choose

  717. with what

  718. belongs

  719. to me?

  720. Or

  721. do you

  722. begrudge

  723. my

  724. generosity?

  725. Verse 13

  726. through 15.

  727. Again,

  728. as with

  729. the apostle,

  730. Jesus

  731. frames the

  732. issue

  733. in terms

  734. of God's

  735. sovereign

  736. prerogative.

  737. Am I

  738. not allowed

  739. to do

  740. what I

  741. choose

  742. with what

  743. belongs

  744. to me?

  745. And

  746. neither

  747. will his

  748. choice

  749. ever

  750. fall

  751. foul

  752. of

  753. justice.

  754. We

  755. need

  756. not

  757. worry

  758. here.

  759. He

  760. will

  761. never

  762. give

  763. less

  764. than we

  765. are due.

  766. Friend,

  767. I am

  768. doing you

  769. no wrong.

  770. God

  771. will

  772. never,

  773. neither

  774. can he,

  775. fall

  776. short

  777. of

  778. whatever

  779. is

  780. right.

  781. Though

  782. in his

  783. sovereign

  784. freedom,

  785. he may

  786. act

  787. with

  788. extraordinary

  789. generosity

  790. of grace.

  791. Would

  792. we,

  793. from our

  794. fairness,

  795. sensibility,

  796. begrudge

  797. and deny

  798. him such

  799. free

  800. generosity

  801. to some

  802. of his

  803. choosing?

  804. I don't

  805. think so.

  806. Another

  807. worry has

  808. arisen for

  809. some.

  810. Some have

  811. felt such

  812. a choice

  813. of God's

  814. as the

  815. decisive

  816. determination

  817. in salvation

  818. can't be

  819. right.

  820. For such

  821. would be to

  822. show

  823. partiality.

  824. And

  825. scripture

  826. assures us

  827. God

  828. shows

  829. no

  830. partiality

  831. or

  832. favoritism.

  833. Or as

  834. the old

  835. King James

  836. version put

  837. it,

  838. God

  839. is no

  840. respecter

  841. of

  842. persons.

  843. Romans

  844. 2,

  845. 11.

  846. Wouldn't

  847. electing

  848. some

  849. and not

  850. others

  851. make

  852. him

  853. so?

  854. While

  855. it might

  856. appear

  857. choosing

  858. some

  859. and not

  860. others

  861. could be

  862. an instance

  863. of

  864. favoritism,

  865. the way

  866. God

  867. chooses

  868. is

  869. actually

  870. the

  871. very

  872. opposite.

  873. It

  874. does not

  875. violate

  876. the

  877. no

  878. favoritism

  879. principle,

  880. it rather

  881. fulfills

  882. it.

  883. God

  884. in his

  885. choosing,

  886. we have

  887. noticed,

  888. does not

  889. show

  890. favoritism

  891. to the

  892. noble

  893. over the

  894. ignoble,

  895. the Jew

  896. over the

  897. Gentile,

  898. the morally

  899. presentable

  900. over the

  901. manifestly

  902. dissolute.

  903. He does

  904. not even

  905. show

  906. favoritism

  907. to the

  908. ignoble

  909. over the

  910. noble,

  911. the poor

  912. over the

  913. wealthy,

  914. for he

  915. chooses

  916. his elect

  917. from all

  918. of those

  919. categories,

  920. excluding

  921. none.

  922. None

  923. of these

  924. are conditions

  925. for God's

  926. choice.

  927. In fact,

  928. they are all

  929. non-conditions.

  930. His election

  931. is non-conditional

  932. or

  933. unconditional

  934. and so

  935. shows no

  936. partiality,

  937. none.

  938. As

  939. Thomas Goodwin

  940. tersely

  941. answers the

  942. objection,

  943. as God

  944. respects no

  945. persons,

  946. so he

  947. respects no

  948. condition upon

  949. which he

  950. gives salvation

  951. to us.

  952. Or as we

  953. might update

  954. the language,

  955. as God

  956. shows no

  957. favoritism,

  958. so he

  959. favors no

  960. condition upon

  961. which he

  962. gives salvation

  963. to us.

  964. Now,

  965. some have

  966. attempted to

  967. draw out

  968. the splinter

  969. by proposing

  970. that perhaps

  971. God's

  972. choice of

  973. us

  974. is

  975. actually

  976. based on

  977. our choice

  978. of him.

  979. God

  980. looks down

  981. the corridors

  982. of time

  983. and sees,

  984. foresees,

  985. that we

  986. are ones

  987. who respond

  988. with faith

  989. to the good

  990. news declared.

  991. We believe

  992. and accordingly

  993. we choose

  994. Christ and

  995. so,

  996. in response,

  997. he chooses

  998. us.

  999. He doesn't

  1000. discriminate.

  1001. He chooses

  1002. any and all

  1003. who choose

  1004. him.

  1005. His choice

  1006. of us

  1007. is based

  1008. on our

  1009. choice

  1010. of him.

  1011. He chose

  1012. us because

  1013. we first

  1014. chose him.

  1015. Well,

  1016. that is a

  1017. way to

  1018. frame and

  1019. to describe

  1020. it.

  1021. It is,

  1022. in fact,

  1023. not an

  1024. uncommon

  1025. way,

  1026. but it

  1027. is certainly

  1028. not the

  1029. Bible's

  1030. way to

  1031. do so.

  1032. The

  1033. Bible,

  1034. unambiguously,

  1035. affirms

  1036. the

  1037. opposite.

  1038. No,

  1039. he chose

  1040. us,

  1041. sorry,

  1042. not

  1043. he chose

  1044. us

  1045. because we

  1046. first chose

  1047. him.

  1048. Rather,

  1049. we choose

  1050. him because

  1051. he first

  1052. chose us.

  1053. Or,

  1054. as the

  1055. Apostle John

  1056. expresses it,

  1057. we love

  1058. him because

  1059. he first

  1060. loved us.

  1061. 1 John 4,

  1062. 19.

  1063. his ancient

  1064. choice of

  1065. love was

  1066. the

  1067. wellspring

  1068. from before

  1069. the beginning.

  1070. Our love

  1071. and choice

  1072. of God

  1073. follows.

  1074. It does

  1075. not precede

  1076. God's

  1077. loving choice

  1078. of us.

  1079. Our

  1080. loving choice

  1081. of God

  1082. is the

  1083. effect

  1084. of God's

  1085. loving choice

  1086. of us,

  1087. not the

  1088. reverse.

  1089. But the

  1090. ultimate

  1091. defeater

  1092. is that

  1093. this

  1094. formulation

  1095. falls

  1096. upon

  1097. the

  1098. wrong

  1099. side

  1100. of the

  1101. great

  1102. watershed.

  1103. Whose

  1104. is the

  1105. glory

  1106. and the

  1107. right of

  1108. boasting?

  1109. Is

  1110. the

  1111. pivotal

  1112. decision

  1113. on which

  1114. our salvation

  1115. hangs

  1116. triggered

  1117. in us

  1118. or in

  1119. God?

  1120. It's

  1121. clear where

  1122. the Bible

  1123. comes down

  1124. on this

  1125. and this

  1126. proposal

  1127. falls

  1128. fatally

  1129. elsewhere.

  1130. If,

  1131. as this

  1132. proposed

  1133. scheme

  1134. would have

  1135. us believe,

  1136. election

  1137. and with

  1138. it salvation

  1139. is triggered

  1140. by our

  1141. faith,

  1142. then salvation

  1143. is ultimately

  1144. determined

  1145. by human

  1146. will and

  1147. exertion of

  1148. faith,

  1149. not on

  1150. God who

  1151. shows mercy.

  1152. And quite

  1153. apart from

  1154. Scripture

  1155. asserting

  1156. the opposite,

  1157. it depends,

  1158. quote,

  1159. not on

  1160. human will

  1161. or exertion,

  1162. but on

  1163. God who

  1164. has mercy,

  1165. Romans 9.16.

  1166. Quite apart

  1167. from that,

  1168. this

  1169. construal

  1170. would furnish

  1171. the elect

  1172. with grounds

  1173. for boasting.

  1174. For the

  1175. reason that

  1176. they are

  1177. heaven-bound

  1178. and their

  1179. twin in

  1180. every respect

  1181. is not

  1182. is because

  1183. they,

  1184. unlike their

  1185. neighbor,

  1186. her twin,

  1187. had the

  1188. good sense

  1189. to believe

  1190. that he,

  1191. in contrast

  1192. to his

  1193. unsaved

  1194. neighbor,

  1195. had the

  1196. moral virtue

  1197. to repent.

  1198. Well done,

  1199. that man.

  1200. And while

  1201. you might

  1202. not think

  1203. to boast

  1204. of your

  1205. spiritual

  1206. prowess

  1207. in relation

  1208. to God,

  1209. you certainly

  1210. would have

  1211. grounds for

  1212. such a

  1213. boast relative

  1214. to your

  1215. less

  1216. spiritually

  1217. perceptive

  1218. neighbor,

  1219. who lacked

  1220. these

  1221. salvation-securing

  1222. sagacities

  1223. and sensibilities.

  1224. Again,

  1225. well done,

  1226. that man.

  1227. Go with

  1228. the smiling

  1229. satisfaction

  1230. in the

  1231. knowledge of

  1232. your moral

  1233. and spiritual

  1234. superiority

  1235. through the

  1236. gates of

  1237. glory.

  1238. But,

  1239. of course,

  1240. this whole

  1241. way of

  1242. thinking

  1243. conspicuously

  1244. fails the

  1245. litmus test

  1246. of the

  1247. gospel of

  1248. grace.

  1249. God chose,

  1250. writes the

  1251. apostle,

  1252. that no

  1253. human being

  1254. might boast

  1255. in the

  1256. presence of

  1257. God.

  1258. 1 Corinthians

  1259. 1.29.

  1260. And,

  1261. that faith

  1262. and repentance

  1263. that you

  1264. propose as

  1265. your

  1266. salvation-triggering

  1267. contribution,

  1268. well,

  1269. actually,

  1270. they're gifts

  1271. of God

  1272. flowing from

  1273. election,

  1274. not

  1275. securing

  1276. election.

  1277. As the

  1278. scripture says,

  1279. Philippians 1.29,

  1280. it was

  1281. granted

  1282. to you

  1283. to believe.

  1284. Acts 11.18,

  1285. to you,

  1286. God has

  1287. granted

  1288. repentance

  1289. that leads

  1290. to life.

  1291. As the

  1292. apostle explains,

  1293. any difference

  1294. in the elect?

  1295. Well,

  1296. what do you

  1297. have that

  1298. you did not

  1299. receive?

  1300. If you

  1301. received it,

  1302. if then you

  1303. received it,

  1304. why would you

  1305. boast as if

  1306. you didn't

  1307. receive it?

  1308. 1 Corinthians

  1309. 4.7.

  1310. Oh,

  1311. sisters and

  1312. brothers,

  1313. do you

  1314. not feel

  1315. this

  1316. to be

  1317. so

  1318. deep in

  1319. your bones

  1320. that when

  1321. it comes

  1322. to our

  1323. salvation,

  1324. God's

  1325. grace is

  1326. all,

  1327. and we

  1328. contribute

  1329. nothing?

  1330. But,

  1331. let's

  1332. close with

  1333. one further

  1334. heart-rousing

  1335. truth

  1336. concerning

  1337. God's

  1338. electing

  1339. love.

  1340. His

  1341. ancient

  1342. choice

  1343. of his

  1344. beloved

  1345. is

  1346. immutable.

  1347. God's

  1348. calling

  1349. is

  1350. irrevocable,

  1351. writes the

  1352. apostle,

  1353. Romans 11.29.

  1354. Election

  1355. having once

  1356. pitched upon

  1357. a person,

  1358. writes John

  1359. Aerosmith,

  1360. it will

  1361. find him

  1362. out and

  1363. call him

  1364. home,

  1365. wherever he

  1366. be.

  1367. In

  1368. whatsoever

  1369. dunghills

  1370. God's

  1371. elector hid,

  1372. election

  1373. will find

  1374. them out

  1375. and bring

  1376. them home.

  1377. Isn't that

  1378. great?

  1379. I should read

  1380. that one more

  1381. time.

  1382. Election,

  1383. having once

  1384. pitched upon

  1385. a person,

  1386. it will

  1387. find him

  1388. out and

  1389. call him

  1390. home,

  1391. wherever he

  1392. be.

  1393. In

  1394. whatsoever

  1395. dunghills

  1396. God's

  1397. elector hid,

  1398. election

  1399. will find

  1400. them out

  1401. and bring

  1402. them

  1403. home.

  1404. Well,

  1405. as to the

  1406. dunghill

  1407. in which

  1408. all God's

  1409. elector

  1410. found,

  1411. the woeful

  1412. and wrathful

  1413. condition of

  1414. our lost

  1415. estate,

  1416. and what

  1417. God's

  1418. electing

  1419. love must

  1420. do to

  1421. draw them,

  1422. to draw

  1423. us out,

  1424. and to

  1425. bring us

  1426. home.

  1427. Those are

  1428. the subjects

  1429. of our

  1430. scriptural

  1431. attention

  1432. next week,

  1433. Lord willing.

  1434. Well,

  1435. we have

  1436. some time

  1437. for any

  1438. questions or

  1439. comments or

  1440. observations or

  1441. praises.

  1442. Yes,

  1443. Richard.

  1444. I would ask

  1445. you to

  1446. do me a

  1447. favor,

  1448. please.

  1449. I'm not as

  1450. good a

  1451. student as

  1452. some yet.

  1453. Could you

  1454. tell me the

  1455. scripture in

  1456. 1 Corinthians

  1457. where he

  1458. says it

  1459. is granted

  1460. to you

  1461. to do

  1462. it?

  1463. Well,

  1464. that was in

  1465. Philippians

  1466. 129.

  1467. Yeah,

  1468. Philippians

  1469. 129.

  1470. I told you

  1471. I wasn't

  1472. that good

  1473. as

  1474. you.

  1475. Yeah,

  1476. no,

  1477. no,

  1478. that's

  1479. all right.

  1480. And then

  1481. Acts 11,

  1482. 18,

  1483. God has

  1484. granted

  1485. repentance

  1486. that leads

  1487. to life.

  1488. I see.

  1489. Yeah.

  1490. And at

  1491. the very

  1492. beginning,

  1493. the scripture

  1494. from 1

  1495. Thessalonians

  1496. that you

  1497. mentioned.

  1498. Yes,

  1499. that is,

  1500. that's the

  1501. one that we

  1502. opened up

  1503. with.

  1504. 15.

  1505. Yeah,

  1506. thank you,

  1507. Elizabeth.

  1508. 2.15.

  1509. I thought

  1510. it was 1

  1511. Thessalonians

  1512. 2,

  1513. maybe 13

  1514. and 14.

  1515. I think

  1516. it's a

  1517. little

  1518. before

  1519. 15.

  1520. Yeah,

  1521. yeah.

  1522. problem.

  1523. Yeah,

  1524. it's funny

  1525. how we

  1526. assign

  1527. blame to

  1528. God

  1529. regarding

  1530. election

  1531. and redemption

  1532. and all

  1533. that,

  1534. and justification,

  1535. and we

  1536. say he's

  1537. biased

  1538. and he's

  1539. unfair,

  1540. that it

  1541. leads to

  1542. cynicism,

  1543. but not

  1544. many

  1545. say,

  1546. how do

  1547. I get

  1548. elected?

  1549. How do

  1550. I get

  1551. to God?

  1552. It's

  1553. blaming

  1554. God.

  1555. Immediately

  1556. we put

  1557. God

  1558. in the

  1559. dock.

  1560. He's

  1561. unfair.

  1562. He's

  1563. not a

  1564. good

  1565. God.

  1566. He's

  1567. biased.

  1568. Instead

  1569. of,

  1570. where can

  1571. I find

  1572. him?

  1573. How can

  1574. I get

  1575. a hold

  1576. of this

  1577. God?

  1578. It's

  1579. because

  1580. we're

  1581. dead

  1582. in our

  1583. sins

  1584. and

  1585. trespasses.

  1586. It's

  1587. like we

  1588. can't

  1589. come to

  1590. God.

  1591. It's

  1592. like a

  1593. ship

  1594. and

  1595. you're

  1596. dead

  1597. in the

  1598. water

  1599. and they

  1600. throw you

  1601. a lifeline

  1602. but you

  1603. can't

  1604. grab

  1605. that

  1606. lifesaver

  1607. because

  1608. you're

  1609. dead.

  1610. Somebody

  1611. has to

  1612. make

  1613. you

  1614. alive

  1615. so

  1616. you

  1617. can

  1618. grab

  1619. that

  1620. lifesaver

  1621. and that's

  1622. salary.

  1623. I'm going

  1624. to start

  1625. taking notes

  1626. Raul because

  1627. that's

  1628. going to

  1629. be my

  1630. lecture

  1631. next week.

  1632. Just one

  1633. quick comment

  1634. on that

  1635. and then I'll

  1636. get the

  1637. other.

  1638. Yes,

  1639. and that's

  1640. so good.

  1641. We don't

  1642. look for

  1643. our salvation

  1644. to our

  1645. election.

  1646. because that

  1647. is hidden

  1648. with God.

  1649. We look

  1650. for our

  1651. salvation to

  1652. the Savior

  1653. that is

  1654. offered to

  1655. all.

  1656. We look to

  1657. Christ and

  1658. live.

  1659. So don't

  1660. try to find

  1661. out your

  1662. salvation

  1663. in election.

  1664. That's not

  1665. visible.

  1666. but the

  1667. Savior of

  1668. the world

  1669. has been

  1670. set forth

  1671. and we

  1672. can look

  1673. to him

  1674. all the

  1675. ends of

  1676. the earth

  1677. and live.

  1678. So that's

  1679. where we

  1680. look.

  1681. Yeah.

  1682. Yeah.

  1683. In any

  1684. of your

  1685. subsequent

  1686. sessions

  1687. are you

  1688. going to

  1689. be

  1690. delving

  1691. more on

  1692. the

  1693. assurance

  1694. of

  1695. grace?

  1696. You know,

  1697. just not

  1698. Yeah,

  1699. yeah,

  1700. yeah,

  1701. yeah,

  1702. yeah.

  1703. Our

  1704. good

  1705. brother

  1706. Tyler

  1707. is going

  1708. to be

  1709. taking up

  1710. one of

  1711. the

  1712. glorious

  1713. truths

  1714. of

  1715. the

  1716. security

  1717. of the

  1718. true

  1719. believer.

  1720. And in

  1721. that

  1722. context

  1723. per

  1724. adventure

  1725. he

  1726. might

  1727. distinguish

  1728. between

  1729. the

  1730. absolute

  1731. Gibraltar

  1732. truth

  1733. of

  1734. scripture

  1735. that

  1736. the

  1737. one

  1738. that is

  1739. in

  1740. union

  1741. with

  1742. Christ

  1743. is

  1744. in

  1745. union

  1746. with

  1747. him

  1748. forever.

  1749. He

  1750. has

  1751. eternal

  1752. life

  1753. for it

  1754. to be

  1755. eternal

  1756. life

  1757. means that

  1758. it can't

  1759. suddenly

  1760. cease

  1761. in some

  1762. sort of

  1763. crisis.

  1764. So there

  1765. is

  1766. absolutely

  1767. eternal

  1768. security

  1769. for the

  1770. one who

  1771. is in

  1772. union

  1773. with

  1774. Christ,

  1775. for

  1776. everyone

  1777. who has

  1778. an interest

  1779. in

  1780. Christ.

  1781. There is

  1782. a distinction

  1783. between

  1784. that being

  1785. the case

  1786. and

  1787. knowing

  1788. and

  1789. drawing

  1790. deep

  1791. personal

  1792. existential

  1793. comfort

  1794. that it

  1795. is

  1796. so.

  1797. Okay,

  1798. so there's

  1799. it's a

  1800. metaphysical

  1801. absolute

  1802. truth,

  1803. it's an

  1804. epistemological

  1805. what we can

  1806. know

  1807. blessing,

  1808. but it is a

  1809. blessing that

  1810. God intends

  1811. for us

  1812. as believers

  1813. to enjoy.

  1814. 1 John 5,

  1815. and these

  1816. things I write

  1817. to you who

  1818. have eternal

  1819. life that

  1820. you might

  1821. know that

  1822. you have.

  1823. These things

  1824. I have

  1825. written to

  1826. you that

  1827. have Christ

  1828. that you

  1829. might know

  1830. that you

  1831. have eternal

  1832. life.

  1833. So that's

  1834. something that

  1835. he,

  1836. that's a

  1837. blessing that

  1838. he wants

  1839. us to

  1840. enjoy.

  1841. And that

  1842. we would

  1843. call

  1844. assurance.

  1845. And the

  1846. grounds of

  1847. assurance

  1848. are going

  1849. to differ

  1850. and thus

  1851. need to be

  1852. pastorally

  1853. applied.

  1854. with skill

  1855. because the

  1856. grounds of

  1857. doubt

  1858. differ.

  1859. So depending

  1860. upon your

  1861. grounds of

  1862. doubt about

  1863. your interest

  1864. in Christ,

  1865. then we

  1866. would need

  1867. to address

  1868. what,

  1869. what those,

  1870. what your

  1871. assurance should

  1872. be.

  1873. I could

  1874. make it a

  1875. little bit

  1876. more explicit

  1877. maybe for

  1878. if, for

  1879. example,

  1880. you think,

  1881. well, you

  1882. know,

  1883. I don't

  1884. know if I

  1885. am,

  1886. I don't

  1887. know if I

  1888. am indeed

  1889. Christ's.

  1890. Oh, why

  1891. do you say

  1892. that?

  1893. Well, because

  1894. I just so

  1895. persistently

  1896. live and

  1897. quite delightfully

  1898. and delectably

  1899. live for the

  1900. world, the

  1901. flesh, and

  1902. the devil.

  1903. Well, that

  1904. might be

  1905. good grounds

  1906. for having

  1907. doubt.

  1908. So I

  1909. wouldn't just

  1910. say,

  1911. well, no,

  1912. ignore those.

  1913. Here's just

  1914. a promise

  1915. of salvation.

  1916. That would

  1917. be a

  1918. pastoral

  1919. abuse.

  1920. No, it

  1921. would be,

  1922. hey, the

  1923. gospel involves

  1924. repentance.

  1925. Look to

  1926. Christ.

  1927. So if,

  1928. if rather,

  1929. like some

  1930. Scottish

  1931. Presbyterian

  1932. saint in the

  1933. Outer Hebrides

  1934. hasn't taken

  1935. the Lord's

  1936. Supper for

  1937. six years

  1938. because he

  1939. just doesn't

  1940. know if he's

  1941. worthy enough

  1942. to receive

  1943. it,

  1944. you know,

  1945. I might say,

  1946. whoa,

  1947. friend,

  1948. brother,

  1949. don't look to

  1950. yourself and

  1951. your relative

  1952. degree of

  1953. holiness or

  1954. unholiness,

  1955. look to

  1956. Christ and

  1957. his righteousness.

  1958. It's his

  1959. record, not

  1960. yours, that

  1961. gives you

  1962. access.

  1963. So you

  1964. deal with

  1965. it in a

  1966. completely,

  1967. in a different

  1968. way, but it

  1969. should be, it

  1970. should be the

  1971. privilege of

  1972. every believer.

  1973. It is the

  1974. privilege of

  1975. every believer

  1976. to have that

  1977. assurance.

  1978. Yeah.

  1979. I was going

  1980. to say,

  1981. I'm going to

  1982. this issue,

  1983. predestination

  1984. would be one

  1985. that really

  1986. reveals the

  1987. human heart

  1988. is like,

  1989. I don't

  1990. know, I

  1991. don't know

  1992. if deceitfulness

  1993. is the right

  1994. word, but

  1995. certainly a

  1996. resistance to

  1997. believing, I

  1998. think, what

  1999. scripture is

  2000. clearly saying,

  2001. particularly

  2002. because I

  2003. feel like on

  2004. this particular

  2005. issue, there

  2006. are two

  2007. common, I

  2008. feel like,

  2009. what seems

  2010. like heart

  2011. motives behind

  2012. not wanting

  2013. to believe

  2014. in election,

  2015. and it

  2016. seems like

  2017. one of them

  2018. is you

  2019. don't want

  2020. to believe

  2021. that you

  2022. are that

  2023. bad, that

  2024. you would

  2025. never believe

  2026. in Christ

  2027. or anything.

  2028. But I

  2029. feel like the

  2030. second one

  2031. tends to be

  2032. more common,

  2033. which is I

  2034. think the

  2035. idea of

  2036. believing in

  2037. a God who

  2038. chooses might

  2039. appear to so

  2040. many as

  2041. something that's

  2042. totally unfair

  2043. and unjust,

  2044. that's

  2045. the temptation

  2046. of evangelism

  2047. and people

  2048. ask, people

  2049. ask about

  2050. predestination,

  2051. we don't

  2052. want to say

  2053. the thing

  2054. that might

  2055. seem unpopular

  2056. or might

  2057. seem like

  2058. it's tempting

  2059. God to be

  2060. in a certain

  2061. way.

  2062. And I'm

  2063. just curious,

  2064. why is it

  2065. that it's so

  2066. important that

  2067. in those

  2068. moments you

  2069. sort of listen

  2070. to what

  2071. scripture has

  2072. to say

  2073. instead of

  2074. going with

  2075. the thing

  2076. that we

  2077. sort of

  2078. believe society

  2079. wants us

  2080. to think?

  2081. Because I

  2082. don't know,

  2083. I just feel

  2084. like in a

  2085. lot of

  2086. it feels

  2087. like the

  2088. human part

  2089. is going

  2090. to believe

  2091. what it

  2092. wants to.

  2093. It happens

  2094. in this

  2095. predestination

  2096. topic.

  2097. Yeah,

  2098. yeah.

  2099. Yeah,

  2100. thanks Alex.

  2101. Yeah,

  2102. this is

  2103. important.

  2104. We always

  2105. are going

  2106. to have

  2107. that dual

  2108. dynamic

  2109. of the

  2110. world

  2111. conforming

  2112. us to

  2113. its image

  2114. and that

  2115. is always

  2116. proceeding

  2117. apace

  2118. just by

  2119. being in

  2120. the world

  2121. and seeking

  2122. to be

  2123. not of

  2124. it.

  2125. And yet

  2126. it squeezes

  2127. us into

  2128. its mold.

  2129. So yes,

  2130. a lot of

  2131. how we

  2132. think about

  2133. things and

  2134. how we

  2135. feel about

  2136. things and

  2137. how we

  2138. wish things

  2139. will be

  2140. conforming

  2141. to the

  2142. world.

  2143. And in

  2144. contrast to

  2145. that,

  2146. we rather

  2147. need to

  2148. renew

  2149. our minds

  2150. through

  2151. the word,

  2152. through the

  2153. scriptures.

  2154. So we

  2155. come to

  2156. think aright,

  2157. orthodoxy,

  2158. and also

  2159. importantly,

  2160. we don't

  2161. often think

  2162. about this

  2163. as often,

  2164. that we

  2165. act aright,

  2166. orthopraxy,

  2167. but also

  2168. that we

  2169. feel aright,

  2170. orthopathy.

  2171. We ought

  2172. to,

  2173. good things

  2174. ought to

  2175. exhilarate

  2176. us.

  2177. We ought

  2178. to rejoice

  2179. in good

  2180. things.

  2181. and we

  2182. ought to

  2183. feel

  2184. praise for

  2185. things that

  2186. are worthy

  2187. of praise.

  2188. So yes,

  2189. we do

  2190. need to

  2191. have

  2192. scripture

  2193. continue to

  2194. train us

  2195. such that

  2196. our

  2197. affections,

  2198. what our

  2199. heart begins

  2200. to be trained

  2201. to incline

  2202. itself toward

  2203. with our

  2204. hearty amen

  2205. and praise

  2206. the Lord

  2207. and hallelujah

  2208. and God

  2209. be praised.

  2210. That is

  2211. something that

  2212. we do

  2213. need to

  2214. work on.

  2215. Absolutely,

  2216. Alex,

  2217. and it's

  2218. often a

  2219. challenge.

  2220. It's always

  2221. a challenge.

  2222. Yeah.

  2223. Yeah,

  2224. go ahead.

  2225. Sure.

  2226. So the

  2227. scriptural idea

  2228. of God

  2229. receiving all

  2230. glory and

  2231. salvation,

  2232. I think that's

  2233. obviously true,

  2234. but how do

  2235. we reconcile

  2236. that with

  2237. language and

  2238. parable

  2239. talents,

  2240. well done,

  2241. that would

  2242. be

  2243. true.

  2244. Does it

  2245. seem like

  2246. they would

  2247. need

  2248. attention?

  2249. How do

  2250. you find

  2251. the tension

  2252. there?

  2253. That a

  2254. commendation,

  2255. if, well,

  2256. could it not

  2257. be resolved

  2258. this way?

  2259. When God

  2260. commends us

  2261. with well

  2262. done, if we

  2263. actually are

  2264. orthodox and

  2265. orthopathic,

  2266. we will realize,

  2267. aha, why,

  2268. thank you,

  2269. but as

  2270. you and I

  2271. both know,

  2272. what do I

  2273. have that I

  2274. haven't received?

  2275. So this

  2276. just reverberates

  2277. back to

  2278. your glory,

  2279. God, because

  2280. if I were

  2281. left to my

  2282. own, why,

  2283. that talent

  2284. would be

  2285. buried in the

  2286. napkin still,

  2287. you know,

  2288. six feet under,

  2289. just like my

  2290. nature.

  2291. So, you

  2292. know, the

  2293. echo back is

  2294. with a

  2295. combination,

  2296. not to us,

  2297. O Lord, but

  2298. to thy name

  2299. be glory.

  2300. So, it's

  2301. just, that's

  2302. just how it

  2303. works if we

  2304. recognize, and

  2305. when we see

  2306. things as they

  2307. truly are,

  2308. that will be

  2309. perfectly understood

  2310. when we are

  2311. in his

  2312. presence.

  2313. Really, any

  2314. sort of

  2315. inclination to

  2316. boast really

  2317. can't occur

  2318. to a

  2319. glorified

  2320. saint in

  2321. the presence

  2322. of God.

  2323. So I

  2324. think that

  2325. that's,

  2326. we are,

  2327. what he,

  2328. we,

  2329. when he

  2330. gives us

  2331. crowns, he's

  2332. simply crowning

  2333. his gifts.

  2334. So maybe

  2335. think about it

  2336. like that.

  2337. Yeah?

  2338. Yeah.

  2339. You talk

  2340. about, like,

  2341. the,

  2342. he doesn't

  2343. choose

  2344. everybody,

  2345. and it's

  2346. like,

  2347. no,

  2348. the world

  2349. wants to

  2350. make it to

  2351. where it's

  2352. like,

  2353. everybody

  2354. has this

  2355. option to

  2356. go after

  2357. God.

  2358. And so it

  2359. made me think

  2360. about the

  2361. scripture,

  2362. many are

  2363. called,

  2364. few are

  2365. chosen.

  2366. So what's

  2367. the difference

  2368. between being

  2369. called and

  2370. being chosen?

  2371. Excellent, yeah.

  2372. So many are

  2373. called, few

  2374. are chosen.

  2375. What's the

  2376. difference between

  2377. being called and

  2378. being chosen?

  2379. What was the

  2380. question?

  2381. Well, he's

  2382. just asking,

  2383. what it says

  2384. certain ones are

  2385. chosen and

  2386. others are not,

  2387. but it says

  2388. the calling

  2389. seems to be

  2390. broader than

  2391. the choice.

  2392. What's the

  2393. difference between

  2394. being called

  2395. and being

  2396. chosen?

  2397. So, a

  2398. great question.

  2399. The scriptural

  2400. difference is

  2401. that the

  2402. call of

  2403. God goes

  2404. out to

  2405. every human

  2406. creature.

  2407. and it

  2408. is both

  2409. an invitation,

  2410. look to

  2411. the Lord,

  2412. all the

  2413. ends of

  2414. the earth

  2415. and be

  2416. saved.

  2417. So the

  2418. gospel,

  2419. the announcement

  2420. that God

  2421. has provided

  2422. a savior for

  2423. the world,

  2424. look to him

  2425. and live,

  2426. that call

  2427. goes out

  2428. to all.

  2429. It is a

  2430. universal

  2431. call.

  2432. And that

  2433. is something

  2434. that we are

  2435. invited to

  2436. respond to

  2437. and indeed

  2438. we have

  2439. an obligation

  2440. to respond

  2441. to morally.

  2442. As Paul

  2443. writes to

  2444. the Athenians,

  2445. said to

  2446. the Athenians,

  2447. God is,

  2448. in Acts 17,

  2449. God is

  2450. commanding

  2451. all people

  2452. everywhere

  2453. to repent

  2454. and to

  2455. believe.

  2456. So the

  2457. gospel call

  2458. is both an

  2459. invitation and

  2460. a command.

  2461. There's an

  2462. obligation.

  2463. But not

  2464. all answer

  2465. that call.

  2466. In fact,

  2467. we are so

  2468. self-centered

  2469. and curved

  2470. in upon

  2471. ourselves

  2472. that we're

  2473. like teflonized

  2474. against that.

  2475. So God

  2476. has to

  2477. actually go

  2478. in and

  2479. like do

  2480. an intervention,

  2481. shake us

  2482. from our

  2483. spiritual

  2484. stupor,

  2485. open our

  2486. closed eyes,

  2487. make our

  2488. hard heart

  2489. malleable,

  2490. and our

  2491. stiff neck

  2492. able to

  2493. actually turn

  2494. and look

  2495. to the

  2496. serpent

  2497. on the

  2498. rod,

  2499. on the

  2500. pole,

  2501. because we

  2502. would never

  2503. do that.

  2504. It's not

  2505. that we

  2506. could never

  2507. do that.

  2508. It's not

  2509. that our

  2510. will,

  2511. like a

  2512. weather vane,

  2513. is soldered

  2514. so it

  2515. can't turn.

  2516. It's just

  2517. that the

  2518. prevailing wind

  2519. from our

  2520. hearts are

  2521. always blowing

  2522. in the same

  2523. direction.

  2524. We prefer

  2525. the delectable

  2526. doings of

  2527. darkness.

  2528. God comes

  2529. in as

  2530. light,

  2531. but men

  2532. love darkness

  2533. rather than

  2534. light because

  2535. their deeds

  2536. are evil.

  2537. So God

  2538. has to

  2539. actually

  2540. choose

  2541. certain

  2542. people

  2543. and

  2544. change

  2545. their hearts,

  2546. regenerate

  2547. them so

  2548. they do

  2549. respond to

  2550. that gospel.

  2551. So that's

  2552. the difference.

  2553. So that,

  2554. what some

  2555. theologians

  2556. call an

  2557. inward

  2558. call.

  2559. So the

  2560. outer

  2561. call,

  2562. we all

  2563. hear with

  2564. our ears,

  2565. whatever,

  2566. I'm busy,

  2567. I'm doing

  2568. things,

  2569. versus an

  2570. inward call

  2571. that he

  2572. makes effectual

  2573. where,

  2574. oh,

  2575. this is

  2576. life.

  2577. This is

  2578. a savor

  2579. of life

  2580. to those

  2581. who are

  2582. appointed

  2583. to life,

  2584. he says

  2585. in Corinthians.

  2586. So,

  2587. does that

  2588. make some

  2589. sense?

  2590. Okay,

  2591. good.

  2592. Yes,

  2593. back.

  2594. Go ahead,

  2595. back.

  2596. many of us,

  2597. if not all

  2598. of us,

  2599. have had

  2600. people

  2601. near to

  2602. us

  2603. who

  2604. have

  2605. seemed

  2606. to show

  2607. genuine

  2608. faith

  2609. and

  2610. belief

  2611. and then

  2612. fallen away.

  2613. And it's

  2614. upsetting.

  2615. Yeah,

  2616. yeah,

  2617. yeah.

  2618. Yeah.

  2619. Yeah.

  2620. Yeah.

  2621. about

  2622. that?

  2623. you

  2624. reconcile

  2625. them?

  2626. How do

  2627. you

  2628. counsel

  2629. them

  2630. as

  2631. friends

  2632. or

  2633. family?

  2634. Yeah,

  2635. yeah,

  2636. yeah,

  2637. no,

  2638. no,

  2639. no,

  2640. no,

  2641. no,

  2642. no,

  2643. no,

2644. How do you think about that?

2645. How do you reconcile that?

2646. How do you counsel that as friends or family?

  2647. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2648. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  2649. Great question.

2650. And that's, that topic is going to fall to, to, to, to Tyler soon.

2651. So you're going to get, you're going to get a much fuller, you're going to get a deeper,

2652. a broader, an all around better answer from Tyler.

  2653. But, but.

2654. I'm going to start taking notes.

  2655. Yeah, yeah.

2656. But I'll just say a few words because we're at, at, at time here.

2657. Yes, it is heart rending.

2658. I would bet it might even be so heart rending back that, that, that we're stirred to cry out

2659. to God and his mercy, to sovereign hearts, to pray.

2660. Maybe even to lovingly confront, to plead.

2661. To, to, to examine ourselves to see if, if we in any way are putting a stumbling block before

2662. these people that are so close to us physically and, and affect in, in, in, in kinship of affection.

2663. So we find ourselves very much animated to plead to God.

2664. And, and, and that is a good, good sign.

2665. Because God does not simply ordain the ends.

2666. And the ends are accomplished.

2667. And the ends are accomplished.

2668. Most, many of which, most of which are these very things that maybe you are beginning to feel evidence for in your heart.

2669. rather than feeling indifference to the fate of your friend,

2670. you actually feel deep solicitude and a passion.

2671. And you find yourself praying and calling on God to open eyes.

  2672. And that's a good sign.

2673. You're beginning to see some of the very means that God ordains to use to achieve these ends

  2674. activated in your heart.

2675. That seems to me to be great grace at work,

2676. which would be just the sort of thing that we would notice

2677. if God actually had saving a tent for that person.

2678. So that tends to make us more hopeful and hopefully not then more complacent.

2679. Oh, it looks like God's going to do it. Great.

2680. Well, I'll go back to my comic book, but more eager.

2681. So my sense is that the fact that you have a deep concern and a deep care,

2682. that's a good sign that God is at work

2683. and should be an added motivation to you to persist at it,

2684. to persist at that good work of exhortation and warning and appeal and that.

  2685. So that's what I begin with.

  2686. Yeah, yeah.

2687. Team, we're probably at time and we better go.

2688. And Lord willing, we'll see you next week

2689. where we are going to take up the question of

2690. what does God's electing love need to overcome

2691. in order to bring us from that dunghill back home.

2692. So we will be looking at our condition, Lord willing.

  2693. Thank you.

2694. I'd just like to tell you one thing.

  2695. Yeah.

2696. This teaching is not new for me,

2697. but it comes as a reminder at an interesting time

2698. in my 51-year walk with the Lord.

  2699. Wow. Say more, Richard.

2700. And that's because I'm reading a book by M. David Litwa right now

  2701. called Marcion,

2702. The Gospel of a Holy Good God.

  2703. Ah.

2704. And Marcion would have a much different reply

2705. from either some of the skeptical pronouncements

2706. that you voiced this morning,

  2707. as Devils, huh?

  2708. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2709. Or anything else modern, really.

  2710. Yeah.

2711. So he would say that,

  2712. look to me,

2713. I've loved you with an everlasting love,

  2714. from Jeremiah, for example.

  2715. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2716. He would say, well, that's the Creator God.

  2717. Yeah, yeah.

2718. And we would say, yeah, that's right.

  2719. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2720. But then you would go on to say,

2721. but it's not the Father of our Lord Jesus.

  2722. Yes, yes, yes, yes.

  2723. Who's saying this.

  2724. Yes, yes.

2725. And so the love he proffers in Jeremiah there

  2726. is a tainted love.

  2727. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2728. Yeah, Marcionism, that early heresy,

2729. was, it seemed to not be able to integrate

2730. and hold together the witness of the Old Testament

  2731. and the New Testament

2732. and failed to see that actually Jesus is

2733. the place where we understand the Father best.

2734. So rather than thinking that there is a contrast,

2735. we need to integrate them

  2736. because God has supremely,

2737. God, Jehovah, has supremely revealed himself

  2738. in his son, Hebrews 1, 3.

  2739. And that's, I think, where Marcion's approach

  2740. is just mistaken.

  2741. Luther says,

2742. to look for God outside the face of Christ

  2743. is the devil.

2744. So, you know, so we ought to say,

2745. no, no, no, the best revelation

2746. of the nature of God, the Father,

  2747. is the Son,

2748. rather than thinking that they could be contrasted.

2749. They need to be integrated.

2750. I think that's where Marcion goes wrong.

2751. Well, do you know of this scholar?

  2752. I've heard the name,

  2753. but I haven't read that book.

2754. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I haven't read that book.

2755. His earlier book was called,

  2756. The Evil Creator.

2757. Ah, well, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  2758. Yeah.

  2759. All right, all right.

  2760. Thank you, Richard.
