  1. Well, good morning, church. Would you turn with me one last time to the book of Ecclesiastes.

  2. We are in chapter 12, verses 8 through 14. We've come to the end of our study in this rich and challenging

  3. ! And we get to hear today what Ecclesiastes calls the end of the matter. We come to the epilogue of

  4. this book where the main message is summed up for us. When all has been said and all has been heard,

  5. here is the main thing. So, as you turn to chapter 12 of Ecclesiastes, let me pray.

  6. Father, how we long to be people of wisdom,

  7. people who know what it means to live life as it is meant to be lived.

  8. Give us ears to hear what the conclusion of this great book of Ecclesiastes has to say to us,

  9. this book that you have inspired and preserved and through which you continue to speak today.

  10. Guide us by your Spirit and lead us to your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

  11. in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found. In His name we pray. Amen.

  12. All right, Ecclesiastes 12, 8 through 14.

  13. Vanity of vanity, says the preacher, all is vanity.

  14. Being wise, besides being wise, the preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying

  15. and arranging many proverbs with great care. The preacher sought to find words of delight,

  16. and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads,

  17. and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings. They are given by one shepherd.

  18. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books, there is no end, and much study is a

  19. weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments,

  20. for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment,

  21. with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

  22. So, in this book of Ecclesiastes, we've been on a quest, a quest to discover the life well lived.

  23. Or as verse 13 puts it, we've been on a quest to discover what is the whole duty of man.

  24. That is, how might we live such that we could look back over our lives

  25. and say, I've done all that I was meant to do. With this life I've been given, I've lived it well.

  26. Now, are you on a quest to discover the life well lived?

  27. Of course you are. Who isn't? Who doesn't want to look back over their life and say, I've lived it well.

  28. With this life I've been given, I've done all that I was meant to do.

  29. But, in this quest for the well lived life, Ecclesiastes has found many dead ends.

  30. In fact, at times, Ecclesiastes has felt like nothing but a series of dead ends.

  31. After all, listen to the words that serve as the bookends, as the frame for this quest.

  32. Chapter 1, verse 2. Chapter 12, verse 8.

  33. Vanity of vanities, says the preacher.

  34. All.

  35. But the life well lived, it's chasing the wind.

  36. So, it seems that we've ended where we began.

  37. Vanity.

  38. So, is that it?

  39. Is it all just a dead end?

  40. Is there no such thing as the life well lived?

  41. Are we just back where we started?

  42. Well, yes and no.

  43. Remember T.S. Eliot's famous lines near the end of his poem, Four Quartets?

  44. He says,

  45. We shall not cease from exploration.

  46. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and to know the place for the first time.

  47. We've come back to this realization that all is vanity.

  48. But what do we now know now that we've taken this quest?

  49. Well, we know that in order to really find lasting meaning, lasting substance, lasting joy in this life,

  50. in order to really find the life well lived, we need more than just life under the sun.

  51. When the preacher says,

  52. All is vanity,

  53. the all he's referring to is all of life considered apart from God, our Creator.

  54. And all there really means all.

  55. There is no creaturely reality that can hold up the weight of a human life.

  56. Your soul is like a treasure of gold.

  57. It is heavy with beauty and glory and worth.

  58. And the tragedy is that we try to hold up this golden treasure

  59. with the thin reeds of pleasure and power and worldly wisdom.

  60. And they all break.

  61. And the soul falls with them.

  62. But what can hold us up

  63. if every creaturely reality is nothing but vanity and a fleeting breath?

  64. Only the Creator.

  65. Ecclesiastes is showing us

  66. that we have to look beyond the frame.

  67. The quest from chapter 1, verse 2, to chapter 12, verse 8,

  68. has not been a dead end.

  69. It has followed every alternative path

  70. so that we might find the only true lasting road to a life well lived.

  71. And that's why in the epilogue to this great book,

  72. verse 11 can take this book so full of its dead end explorations

  73. and place it among the words of the truly wise

  74. and describe it like goads and like nails.

  75. What's a goad?

  76. Well, a goad was a sharp stick

  77. that a shepherd would use

  78. to direct sheep away from harmful paths.

  79. And has not Ecclesiastes been like a goad?

  80. Has it not prodded us and poked us

  81. to see the futility

  82. of so many of the dead end paths

  83. that we're prone to take?

  84. Try pleasure, Ecclesiastes has said.

  85. See where it leads.

  86. Try power.

  87. Try wealth.

  88. Try earthly wisdom.

  89. Let's take those paths

  90. and see that they're all vanity.

  91. But after the goad comes the nail.

  92. And then, you see, like a nail firmly fixed,

  93. Ecclesiastes has given us something

  94. that at last is stable and secure,

  95. a place not just to hang a coat,

  96. not just to hang a bag,

  97. not just to hang a few bits of choice advice.

  98. No, here is an anchor

  99. upon which you can hang your whole life.

  100. Your soul, in all of its weighty beauty,

  101. can rest here and be secure and never fall.

  102. You know, it's sort of like we've been staring

  103. at a painting in a museum.

  104. And inside the frame,

  105. there's this picture of human life

  106. that's ultimately empty and fleeting.

  107. And as our eyes move across the picture,

  108. we come to the edge,

  109. we come to the frame,

  110. and then we scan over

  111. and we hit the frame again,

  112. and we come down

  113. and we hit the frame again.

  114. And we think,

  115. but everything I see in this picture is vanity.

  116. And the more you stare at the picture

  117. within the frame,

  118. the more empty life becomes.

  119. And your heart sinks

  120. and your spirit drops.

  121. Is this all there is?

  122. All is empty.

  123. But then one of those,

  124. you know, one of the guys in the museum

  125. with the blue coat comes over

  126. and taps you on the shoulder and says,

  127. friend,

  128. friend,

  129. look beyond the frame.

  130. Lift up your eyes.

  131. Turn around.

  132. Lift up your gaze.

  133. There is more to be seen.

  134. So as Ecclesiastes comes to an end,

  135. as we return to the frame of vanity

  136. in verse 8,

  137. we're beckoned

  138. to leave vanity behind,

  139. to step beyond the frame,

  140. to leave the dead-end paths,

  141. and to find

  142. that the life well lived

  143. is the life lived

  144. in the presence of God.

  145. verse 13 and 14,

  146. the end of the matter.

  147. All has been heard.

  148. Fear God

  149. and keep His commandments,

  150. for this is the whole duty of man.

  151. For God will bring every deed

  152. into judgment

  153. with every secret thing,

  154. whether good or evil.

  155. And so in these last two verses,

  156. we see

  157. the contours

  158. of a life well lived.

  159. We see first

  160. the heart

  161. of a life well lived.

  162. And what is that heart?

  163. It's a heart

  164. that fears God.

  165. What does it mean

  166. to fear God?

  167. In the Bible,

  168. to fear God

  169. means to live

  170. in awe

  171. of His reality.

  172. And that's a bit different

  173. than how we usually

  174. use the word fear,

  175. isn't it?

  176. We usually say

  177. we're afraid of something

  178. because we're scared

  179. it's going to hurt us

  180. and we want to run away

  181. and hide, right?

  182. But this kind of fear,

  183. the fear of God,

  184. doesn't necessarily mean

  185. you want to run away

  186. or hide.

  187. It's the sort of feeling

  188. you get in the presence

  189. of something

  190. truly majestic,

  191. truly great.

  192. Natural beauty

  193. perhaps provides

  194. the best analogy.

  195. You know,

  196. when you stand

  197. on the edge

  198. of something like

  199. the Grand Canyon

  200. or when you see

  201. 20-foot waves

  202. rise in the ocean

  203. during a storm,

  204. that combination

  205. of power

  206. and beauty

  207. fills your heart

  208. with awe.

  209. And yes,

  210. you know

  211. that a 20-foot wave

  212. is dangerous

  213. and so it's scary

  214. in that sense.

  215. but even if it

  216. wasn't going to hurt you,

  217. even if you were

  218. safe on the shore,

  219. you would still

  220. look at it in awe.

  221. That's a bit

  222. of what the fear

  223. of God means.

  224. To understand

  225. God's character,

  226. the perfection

  227. of power

  228. and beauty,

  229. of wisdom

  230. and goodness,

  231. to understand

  232. the excellence

  233. of God's character

  234. and being

  235. and to feel

  236. the reality

  237. of it.

  238. And to fear

  239. God

  240. means

  241. that the reality

  242. of God

  243. is the shaping

  244. reality

  245. of your life.

  246. It means

  247. that you care

  248. more

  249. about what

  250. pleases God

  251. than what pleases

  252. other people.

  253. It means

  254. that you care

  255. more about

  256. God's approval

  257. or disapproval

  258. than the approval

  259. of your colleagues

  260. or neighbors

  261. or classmates.

  262. It means

  263. that the reality

  264. of God

  265. is the standard

  266. by which you

  267. measure all

  268. other wisdom,

  269. all other goodness,

  270. all other beauty.

  271. That's why

  272. verse 12

  273. can say,

  274. My son,

  275. beware of anything

  276. beyond these,

  277. of making many books

  278. there is no end,

  279. and much study

  280. is a weariness

  281. of the flesh.

  282. You know,

  283. those words

  284. weren't just penned

  285. in the midst

  286. of finals week,

  287. right?

  288. Ecclesiastes,

  289. notice,

  290. Ecclesiastes

  291. isn't saying

  292. we should

  293. never

  294. read books,

  295. never study,

  296. never explore ideas

  297. and see where

  298. they lead.

  299. He's saying

  300. beware.

  301. Beware

  302. of chasing

  303. after

  304. every new idea.

  305. You can always

  306. find one more

  307. path to explore,

  308. one more idea

  309. to chase,

  310. one more pleasure

  311. to experiment with.

  312. Humans will

  313. always be

  314. contriving

  315. yet another way

  316. to try to find

  317. meaning and purpose

  318. under the sun

  319. apart from God.

  320. But in the end,

  321. Ecclesiastes

  322. says it will only

  323. lead to weariness.

  324. real wisdom.

  325. The heart

  326. of a life

  327. well lived

  328. is fearing God.

  329. There is no book,

  330. no podcast,

  331. no TED Talk

  332. that will give

  333. a better foundation

  334. for a life

  335. well lived

  336. than this.

  337. Fear

  338. God.

  339. After all,

  340. what else

  341. could you put

  342. at the center

  343. of your life?

  344. that could

  345. compare to this.

  346. God

  347. is the perfection

  348. of beauty,

  349. the pinnacle

  350. of righteousness,

  351. the sum

  352. and source

  353. of all truth,

  354. the very ground

  355. of being

  356. itself.

  357. God is the one

  358. from whom

  359. and through whom

  360. and to whom

  361. are all things.

  362. Why would you

  363. dance in the shadows

  364. when you can

  365. step into the light

  366. and be flooded

  367. with light?

  368. fear God.

  369. But how can we grow?

  370. How can we grow

  371. in the fear

  372. of God?

  373. Well, friends,

  374. on the one hand,

  375. the fear of God

  376. is ultimately

  377. something that only

  378. God's Holy Spirit

  379. can bring about

  380. in the human heart.

  381. Only the Holy Spirit

  382. can open the eyes

  383. of our hearts

  384. to understand

  385. and worship God

  386. as God truly is.

  387. but on the other hand,

  388. the means

  389. that the Holy Spirit

  390. uses to do His work

  391. is so often

  392. and regularly

  393. the Word

  394. He has inspired.

  395. Do you want

  396. to grow

  397. in the fear of God?

  398. Do you want

  399. the reality of God

  400. to be the controlling

  401. reality of your life

  402. so that you can

  403. be liberated

  404. from all the petty

  405. little fears

  406. that drive you?

  407. then meditate

  408. upon the character

  409. of God

  410. revealed

  411. in the Word of God.

  412. Study His attributes.

  413. Ascribe to Him

  414. the glory He deserves.

  415. Praise God

  416. for who He is.

  417. Meditate on His perfections.

  418. When you read Scripture,

  419. prayerfully keep an eye out

  420. for those descriptions

  421. of who God is

  422. and what He is like.

  423. You know,

  424. often we go

  425. to Scripture

  426. looking for

  427. a little bit of advice

  428. to do this

  429. and a little bit

  430. of comfort to do that

  431. and those are good.

  432. We should go to God's Word

  433. for everything.

  434. But do we go

  435. to behold God

  436. as He has revealed

  437. Himself to us?

  438. Go to see

  439. His holiness.

  440. His righteousness,

  441. His faithfulness,

  442. His goodness,

  443. His sovereignty,

  444. His majesty,

  445. His timeless eternity.

  446. Do you need help

  447. doing this?

  448. Of course you do.

  449. We all do.

  450. We all need help

  451. learning more

  452. about who God

  453. reveals Himself

  454. to be in Scripture.

  455. And thankfully,

  456. God has raised up

  457. teachers throughout

  458. the history of the church

  459. who help us

  460. take the truths

  461. of Scripture

  462. about who God is

  463. and understand them

  464. and apply them

  465. and make them shine.

  466. You might consider

  467. reading a book

  468. like J.I. Packer's

  469. Knowing God,

  470. a wonderful book

  471. to begin meditating

  472. on who God is

  473. and His glory

  474. so that you might grow

  475. in the fear of Him.

  476. You might read a little bit

  477. each day with your daily

  478. Bible reading

  479. and then spend time

  480. each day

  481. worshiping God

  482. simply for who He is

  483. and pray.

  484. And pray that the Holy Spirit

  485. would allow

  486. the right awe

  487. of God's reality

  488. to rise up

  489. in your heart

  490. because that

  491. is the heart

  492. of a life well lived.

  493. Fear God.

  494. But in verse 13,

  495. we also see

  496. not just the heart

  497. of a life well lived

  498. but the direction

  499. of a life well lived.

  500. What is the direction

  501. of a life

  502. that is well lived?

  503. Verse 13 says,

  504. fear God

  505. and keep

  506. His commandments.

  507. How different that is

  508. from most of the advice

  509. we receive

  510. about living

  511. a well lived life.

  512. You know,

  513. money,

  514. fame,

  515. impact,

  516. friendship,

  517. community,

  518. family,

  519. service,

  520. these are the sorts

  521. of ideals

  522. that get held up

  523. as, you know,

  524. when you're really

  525. on track

  526. to live a well lived life.

  527. Right?

  528. But a truly

  529. well lived life

  530. is a life lived

  531. in obedience

  532. to God's commands.

  533. Why is this the case?

  534. Why obedience

  535. to God's commands?

  536. Well,

  537. because God

  538. is the creator

  539. of all things.

  540. He not only knows

  541. how our human lives

  542. work best,

  543. but He also knows

  544. how the very created

  545. order works best.

  546. Think of it this way.

  547. When a carpenter

  548. or a craftsman

  549. is working

  550. with a piece of wood,

  551. they have to pay

  552. very careful attention

  553. to what?

  554. To the grain

  555. of the wood.

  556. To the direction

  557. and orientation

  558. of the fibers

  559. of the wood

  560. as it is grown

  561. in the tree.

  562. Right?

  563. Woodworkers know

  564. that as they cut

  565. and as they plane

  566. and as they finish

  567. the wood,

  568. they have to work

  569. with the grain.

  570. Otherwise,

  571. the wood

  572. will simply chip

  573. and splinter.

  574. Going against

  575. the grain

  576. is a recipe

  577. for ruining

  578. the wood

  579. and ruining

  580. the project.

  581. But if you can learn

  582. to work

  583. with the grain,

  584. then you can create

  585. things of beauty

  586. and stability

  587. and integrity.

  588. And friends,

  589. that is true

  590. of our lives

  591. as a whole.

  592. You see,

  593. God's commands

  594. describe,

  595. as it were,

  596. the very grain

  597. of the universe,

  598. the grain

  599. of created reality.

  600. And so,

  601. to obey

  602. God's commands

  603. is to live life

  604. with the grain

  605. of reality itself,

  606. to live life

  607. with the grain

  608. of God's created order.

  609. You see,

  610. what that means

  611. is that God's commands

  612. are not some

  613. sort of external

  614. dictates

  615. that are just

  616. imposed upon

  617. the foreign material

  618. of the world.

  619. Right?

  620. No.

  621. Because God

  622. created all things.

  623. Because He called

  624. all things

  625. into being

  626. and fashioned them

  627. according to His will.

  628. Because of that,

  629. God's commands

  630. are His gracious

  631. description

  632. of the very grain

  633. of the reality

  634. He has made.

  635. If it seems

  636. to us

  637. like God's commands

  638. are strange

  639. or counterintuitive

  640. or out of place

  641. or unrealistic,

  642. it is not because

  643. God's commands

  644. are out of step

  645. with reality,

  646. but because we are.

  647. Keeping God's commands

  648. are the direction

  649. of a life well lived.

  650. But how do we

  651. keep His commands?

  652. How do we

  653. keep God's commandments?

  654. Anyone who has

  655. tried to live

  656. according to God's

  657. commands set forth

  658. in Scripture

  659. will sooner

  660. rather than later

  661. be able to say

  662. what the Apostle Paul

  663. said in Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  664. chapter 7.

  665. The things I want

  666. to do,

  667. I don't do.

  668. And the things

  669. I don't want to do,

  670. those are the very

  671. things I keep

  672. on doing.

  673. You see,

  674. the human heart

  675. by itself

  676. cannot keep

  677. God's commands.

  678. There's a power

  679. in us

  680. that seems

  681. to keep

  682. driving us

  683. to go

  684. against the grain

  685. of God's

  686. good commandments.

  687. And this

  688. power

  689. that drives

  690. us against

  691. the grain

  692. is what the

  693. Bible calls

  694. sin.

  695. And because

  696. this power

  697. is inside

  698. of us,

  699. there is no

  700. outside-in

  701. approach

  702. that will fix

  703. it.

  704. We can try

  705. to learn more

  706. about the moral

  707. life.

  708. We can try

  709. to learn more

  710. about virtue.

  711. We can try

  712. harder to put

  713. it into practice.

  714. You know,

  715. like Benjamin

  716. Franklin,

  717. we can keep

  718. a meticulous

  719. practice of

  720. sharpening our

  721. moral character,

  722. focusing on one

  723. virtue at a time,

  724. keeping track

  725. of it in our

  726. journal,

  727. charting how

  728. much progress

  729. we made each

  730. week,

  731. each month,

  732. each quarter.

  733. And we can

  734. even join

  735. together in

  736. community with

  737. others who

  738. are striving

  739. for the same

  740. goals.

  741. But all of

  742. these things,

  743. while good

  744. in themselves,

  745. are outside-in

  746. attempts to

  747. fix an

  748. inside problem.

  749. It's sort of

  750. like painting

  751. the outside

  752. of a house

  753. house, when

  754. the real

  755. problem is

  756. that the

  757. foundation is

  758. cracked.

  759. The only

  760. hope we

  761. have of

  762. keeping God's

  763. commandments

  764. and living

  765. with a grain

  766. of reality

  767. is an

  768. inside-out

  769. solution.

  770. We need the

  771. sin in our

  772. hearts to be

  773. dealt with

  774. on the inside

  775. so that then

  776. our outward

  777. actions can

  778. begin to

  779. change.

  780. And where

  781. does this

  782. inside-out

  783. solution come

  784. from?

  785. It comes

  786. from God.

  787. God, in

  788. His grace,

  789. has made a

  790. way for a

  791. new power to

  792. begin inside

  793. of us that

  794. can liberate

  795. us and

  796. empower us to

  797. obey God's

  798. commands from

  799. the heart,

  800. that can subdue

  801. the power of

  802. sin.

  803. Listen to how

  804. Paul describes

  805. it in Romans

  806. 8, just

  807. after confessing

  808. the things I

  809. want to do,

  810. I don't do,

  811. the things I

  812. don't want to

  813. do, I

  814. just keep

  815. on doing

  816. them.

  817. He says,

  818. where do I

  819. go for

  820. rescue?

  821. He says in

  822. Romans 8,

  823. God has

  824. done what

  825. the law

  826. weakened by

  827. the flesh

  828. could not

  829. do.

  830. You see,

  831. the law is

  832. the ultimate

  833. outside-in

  834. approach,

  835. trying to

  836. do better

  837. in our own

  838. willpower.

  839. But God

  840. has done what

  841. the law

  842. weakened by

  843. the flesh

  844. could not

  845. do.

  846. How?

  847. By sending

  848. His own

  849. Son.

  850. In the

  851. likeness of

  852. sinful flesh

  853. and for

  854. sin,

  855. He condemned

  856. sin in the

  857. flesh in order

  858. that the

  859. righteous

  860. requirement of

  861. the law

  862. might be

  863. fulfilled in

  864. us who

  865. walk not

  866. according to

  867. the flesh,

  868. but according

  869. to the

  870. Spirit.

  871. What Paul is

  872. saying is this,

  873. God the

  874. Father sent

  875. His Son to

  876. take on our

  877. fully human

  878. nature in

  879. the Incarnation

  880. and united

  881. to our

  882. humanity.

  883. Jesus not

  884. only lived a

  885. perfect life

  886. for us,

  887. but also

  888. died to

  889. pay sin's

  890. penalty for

  891. us.

  892. And on the

  893. third day,

  894. when Jesus

  895. rose again,

  896. He demonstrated

  897. that sin

  898. was defeated.

  899. And now,

  900. for everyone

  901. who admits

  902. that they

  903. can't beat

  904. sin on their

  905. own,

  906. and who

  907. turn and

  908. trust in

  909. Christ as

  910. the one

  911. who did,

  912. God not

  913. only promises

  914. to forgive

  915. their sins

  916. on account

  917. of what

  918. Jesus did,

  919. but He

  920. promises to

  921. give them

  922. new hearts

  923. through the

  924. Holy Spirit.

  925. That is,

  926. everyone who

  927. trusts in

  928. Jesus as

  929. Lord is

  930. granted a

  931. new internal

  932. power by

  933. the Holy Spirit

  934. to enable

  935. them from

  936. the inside

  937. out now to

  938. obey God's

  939. commands.

  940. Friend,

  941. do you

  942. know this

  943. inside-out

  944. power?

  945. that only

  946. comes through

  947. Jesus Christ,

  948. the one who

  949. condemned sin

  950. in the flesh

  951. so that you

  952. might be made

  953. alive to walk

  954. in His Spirit.

  955. Do you

  956. know that?

  957. Of course,

  958. Ecclesiastes,

  959. !

  960. right,

  961. only saw the

  962. need and the

  963. importance of

  964. keeping God's

  965. commands.

  966. But today,

  967. we also see

  968. the lengths

  969. that God

  970. has gone

  971. to make

  972. us able

  973. to keep

  974. His commands,

  975. sending His

  976. own Son for

  977. us,

  978. pouring out

  979. His Spirit

  980. upon us.

  981. So,

  982. have you

  983. trusted in

  984. the risen

  985. Lord Jesus

  986. to receive

  987. this enabling

  988. and empowering

  989. grace?

  990. us?

  991. Or are you

  992. still trying

  993. the outside-in

  994. approach?

  995. And how

  996. much longer

  997. will you

  998. keep trying

  999. until you

  1000. realize you

  1001. need a much

  1002. more radical

  1003. solution?

  1004. Not a new

  1005. strategy,

  1006. but a new

  1007. heart that

  1008. only God

  1009. in Christ

  1010. by His

  1011. Spirit can

  1012. give.

  1013. But friends,

  1014. don't you see,

  1015. don't you see

  1016. what good

  1017. news this is?

  1018. God doesn't

  1019. just create a

  1020. world and

  1021. then reveal

  1022. His commands

  1023. that describe

  1024. the grain of

  1025. that world

  1026. and then say,

  1027. good luck,

  1028. have fun with

  1029. that.

  1030. God is

  1031. willing to

  1032. condescend to

  1033. us,

  1034. sinners though

  1035. we are,

  1036. willingly live

  1037. and die and

  1038. rise again so

  1039. that we might

  1040. be filled with

  1041. His very

  1042. Spirit and

  1043. being able to

  1044. live at last

  1045. with the grain

  1046. of His

  1047. created world.

  1048. Of course,

  1049. we'll never

  1050. live that

  1051. perfectly in

  1052. this life.

  1053. Sin still

  1054. remains in

  1055. our hearts

  1056. even after

  1057. becoming new

  1058. creations.

  1059. And it will

  1060. remain there

  1061. until the

  1062. new creation

  1063. when Christ

  1064. returns.

  1065. But as we

  1066. keep in step

  1067. with His

  1068. Spirit,

  1069. as we depend

  1070. upon His

  1071. enabling grace,

  1072. this new

  1073. birth inside

  1074. of us will

  1075. surely work

  1076. itself out

  1077. and our

  1078. lives will

  1079. become lives

  1080. well lived.

  1081. life.

  1082. So Ecclesiastes

  1083. ends by

  1084. showing us

  1085. the heart

  1086. and the

  1087. direction of

  1088. a life well

  1089. lived.

  1090. Fear God,

  1091. keep His

  1092. commandments.

  1093. But there's

  1094. one more

  1095. thing.

  1096. In the

  1097. final verse

  1098. of the

  1099. book,

  1100. we see

  1101. the horizon

  1102. of a life

  1103. well lived.

  1104. What is the

  1105. horizon that

  1106. we must look

  1107. toward if we

  1108. are to live

  1109. the well lived

  1110. life?

  1111. Well,

  1112. according to

  1113. the last

  1114. verse of

  1115. this book,

  1116. it is God's

  1117. perfect and

  1118. complete

  1119. judgment.

  1120. This is

  1121. really the

  1122. only thing

  1123. that can

  1124. give life

  1125. any lasting

  1126. meaning.

  1127. Arthur Miller

  1128. wrote a play

  1129. called

  1130. After the Fall,

  1131. and in that

  1132. play,

  1133. one of the

  1134. characters,

  1135. Quentin,

  1136. sort of

  1137. gets at

  1138. this when

  1139. he says,

  1140. it's a long

  1141. quote,

  1142. but I think

  1143. it's really

  1144. meaningful.

  1145. This character

  1146. in Arthur

  1147. Miller's play

  1148. says,

  1149. you know,

  1150. for many

  1151. years I

  1152. looked at

  1153. life like

  1154. a case

  1155. at law.

  1156. It was

  1157. a series

  1158. of proofs.

  1159. When

  1160. you're

  1161. young,

  1162. you prove

  1163. how brave

  1164. you are

  1165. or smart.

  1166. Then,

  1167. what a

  1168. good lover.

  1169. Then,

  1170. a good

  1171. father.

  1172. And finally,

  1173. how wise

  1174. or powerful.

  1175. But underlying

  1176. it all,

  1177. I see now

  1178. there was

  1179. a presumption

  1180. that one

  1181. moved on

  1182. an upward

  1183. path towards

  1184. some elevation

  1185. where,

  1186. God knows

  1187. what,

  1188. I would be

  1189. justified or

  1190. even condemned,

  1191. a verdict

  1192. anyway.

  1193. And then the

  1194. character says,

  1195. I think now

  1196. that my

  1197. disaster really

  1198. began when

  1199. I looked up

  1200. one day and

  1201. the bench

  1202. was empty.

  1203. No judge

  1204. in sight.

  1205. And all

  1206. that remained

  1207. was the

  1208. endless

  1209. argument

  1210. with oneself.

  1211. The

  1212. pointless

  1213. litigation

  1214. of existence

  1215. before

  1216. an empty

  1217. bench.

  1218. Which,

  1219. of course,

  1220. is another

  1221. way of saying

  1222. despair.

  1223. If the

  1224. bench is

  1225. empty,

  1226. friends,

  1227. then human

  1228. life is

  1229. just one

  1230. long,

  1231. despairing,

  1232. pointless

  1233. litigation

  1234. of existence.

  1235. Because what

  1236. you do

  1237. or don't

  1238. do

  1239. really doesn't

  1240. matter in

  1241. the end.

  1242. But what

  1243. if the

  1244. bench

  1245. isn't

  1246. empty?

  1247. what if

  1248. everything

  1249. you do

  1250. does

  1251. matter?

  1252. Down

  1253. even to

  1254. the little

  1255. things,

  1256. even the

  1257. things no

  1258. one else

  1259. sees,

  1260. every secret

  1261. thing,

  1262. as verse

  1263. 14 says.

  1264. What if

  1265. every dollar

  1266. that you

  1267. spend,

  1268. and every

  1269. word that

  1270. you speak,

  1271. and every

  1272. simple act

  1273. of kindness

  1274. toward your

  1275. spouse,

  1276. or your

  1277. child,

  1278. or your

  1279. neighbor,

  1280. what if

  1281. all of

  1282. that mattered,

  1283. and mattered

  1284. for eternity?

  1285. What if

  1286. the whole

  1287. of your

  1288. life,

  1289. every

  1290. moment of

  1291. it,

  1292. wasn't a

  1293. flicker

  1294. on the

  1295. blank screen

  1296. of a

  1297. pointless

  1298. and meaningless

  1299. universe,

  1300. but what if

  1301. it was a

  1302. meaningful

  1303. thread in

  1304. a created

  1305. order headed

  1306. toward eternity

  1307. with a

  1308. holy God,

  1309. a God

  1310. who sees

  1311. every deed,

  1312. and who

  1313. will vindicate

  1314. or condemn

  1315. every act

  1316. in perfect

  1317. righteousness?

  1318. What if

  1319. the bench

  1320. isn't

  1321. empty?

  1322. It's

  1323. surprising

  1324. how this

  1325. book of

  1326. Ecclesiastes

  1327. ends,

  1328. isn't it?

  1329. For pages

  1330. and pages

  1331. we hear the

  1332. book wrestle

  1333. with the

  1334. fleeting

  1335. vanity

  1336. of existence

  1337. under the

  1338. sun,

  1339. exploring

  1340. every

  1341. dead-end

  1342. path,

  1343. and exhausting

  1344. every

  1345. earth-bound

  1346. road,

  1347. only to

  1348. discover

  1349. that

  1350. creation

  1351. leads us

  1352. headlong

  1353. to our

  1354. Creator.

  1355. And in

  1356. view of

  1357. this God,

  1358. no longer

  1359. does nothing

  1360. matter,

  1361. but everything

  1362. does.

  1363. Everything

  1364. matters.

  1365. Everything

  1366. has substance.

  1367. Nothing is

  1368. in vain,

  1369. because a

  1370. good and

  1371. holy God

  1372. has created

  1373. all things,

  1374. and this

  1375. God will

  1376. not allow

  1377. His creation

  1378. to go

  1379. unnoticed.

  1380. And He

  1381. will call

  1382. the entire

  1383. story of

  1384. creation

  1385. and every

  1386. work done

  1387. within it

  1388. to account.

  1389. God

  1390. will

  1391. save us

  1392. from the

  1393. creation

  1394. and

  1395. God.

  1396. The reality

  1397. of God

  1398. as Creator

  1399. and Judge

  1400. saves us

  1401. from the

  1402. despair of

  1403. meaningless.

  1404. We're

  1405. saved!

  1406. But does

  1407. it not

  1408. simply

  1409. introduce

  1410. another

  1411. despair

  1412. in its

  1413. place?

  1414. Who

  1415. can stand

  1416. before a

  1417. perfect

  1418. judge?

  1419. I mean,

  1420. think about

  1421. it.

  1422. every

  1423. secret

  1424. thought.

  1425. That's

  1426. pretty

  1427. harrowing,

  1428. isn't it?

  1429. Look at

  1430. these stained

  1431. glass

  1432. windows.

  1433. Imagine

  1434. every

  1435. secret

  1436. thought

  1437. was

  1438. displayed

  1439. on

  1440. these

  1441. stained

  1442. glass

  1443. windows.

  1444. Who

  1445. would

  1446. stay

  1447. in

  1448. this

  1449. sanctuary?

  1450. We'd

  1451. all be

  1452. running

  1453. for the

  1454. door.

  1455. If

  1456. every

  1457. deed,

  1458. even

  1459. our

  1460. secret

  1461. thoughts

  1462. are

  1463. exposed,

  1464. who

  1465. could

  1466. possibly

  1467. be

  1468. justified?

  1469. But,

  1470. friends,

  1471. the good

  1472. news of

  1473. the gospel

  1474. tells us

  1475. that the

  1476. one who

  1477. sits on

  1478. the bench

  1479. is also

  1480. the one

  1481. who hung

  1482. from the

  1483. cross.

  1484. The one

  1485. shepherd,

  1486. God,

  1487. who utters

  1488. the words

  1489. of wisdom

  1490. described in

  1491. verse 11.

  1492. That's what

  1493. Ecclesiastes is

  1494. talking about

  1495. there.

  1496. These words

  1497. of wisdom

  1498. come from

  1499. one shepherd

  1500. ultimately,

  1501. all true

  1502. wisdom is

  1503. God's

  1504. wisdom.

  1505. That one

  1506. shepherd

  1507. God who

  1508. utters

  1509. words of

  1510. wisdom,

  1511. the one

  1512. judge

  1513. God who

  1514. renders

  1515. perfect

  1516. judgment

  1517. in verse

  1518. 14,

  1519. is the

  1520. same

  1521. God

  1522. who stood

  1523. in the

  1524. place of

  1525. sinners

  1526. and was

  1527. condemned

  1528. unto

  1529. death

  1530. so that

  1531. all who

  1532. trust in

  1533. Him

  1534. might be

  1535. justified

  1536. and live.

  1537. hope.

  1538. And so

  1539. there is

  1540. not just

  1541. meaning,

  1542. but hope.

  1543. The message

  1544. of the apostles

  1545. from the

  1546. earliest days

  1547. was this.

  1548. God has

  1549. fixed a

  1550. day on

  1551. which He

  1552. will judge

  1553. the world

  1554. in righteousness

  1555. by a

  1556. man whom

  1557. He has

  1558. appointed.

  1559. And of

  1560. this,

  1561. He has

  1562. given assurance

  1563. to all

  1564. by raising

  1565. Him from

  1566. the dead.

  1567. And when

  1568. that day

  1569. comes,

  1570. those who

  1571. have trusted

  1572. in Christ,

  1573. as the

  1574. Gospel of

  1575. John says,

  1576. will not

  1577. come into

  1578. judgment,

  1579. but will

  1580. pass from

  1581. death to

  1582. life.

  1583. This is

  1584. the horizon

  1585. of a life

  1586. well lived,

  1587. to trust in

  1588. Christ for

  1589. our final

  1590. justification,

  1591. and to know

  1592. that because

  1593. Christ rose

  1594. from the

  1595. grave,

  1596. our labors

  1597. are not

  1598. in vain,

  1599. but that

  1600. everything

  1601. matters.

  1602. And so

  1603. this is

  1604. where the

  1605. quest has

  1606. led us.

  1607. On this

  1608. quest for

  1609. a well lived

  1610. life,

  1611. we've

  1612. discovered

  1613. that on

  1614. the one

  1615. hand,

  1616. it is

  1617. true.

  1618. All is

  1619. vanity,

  1620. vanity of

  1621. vanities.

  1622. Yes,

  1623. that's

  1624. true,

  1625. but only

  1626. to those

  1627. who refuse

  1628. to look

  1629. beyond the

  1630. frame,

  1631. only to

  1632. those who

  1633. remain on

  1634. the dead

  1635. end paths,

  1636. only to

  1637. those who

  1638. persist in

  1639. chasing the

  1640. wind.

  1641. But for

  1642. those who

  1643. turn and

  1644. come to

  1645. know the

  1646. God who

  1647. raised Jesus

  1648. from the

  1649. dead,

  1650. our Creator

  1651. and our

  1652. Redeemer,

  1653. all their

  1654. life is

  1655. full with

  1656. unspeakable

  1657. meaning and

  1658. purpose and

  1659. lasting joy.

  1660. And as we

  1661. fear God,

  1662. and as we

  1663. obey God,

  1664. and as we

  1665. look to God's

  1666. judgment to

  1667. make all

  1668. things new,

  1669. then we

  1670. will live

  1671. lives that

  1672. are not

  1673. in vain,

  1674. but lives

  1675. that will

  1676. be meaningful,

  1677. gloriously

  1678. meaningful,

  1679. now and

  1680. for eternity.

  1681. Let's pray.

  1682. Christ,

  1683. in you,

  1684. all the

  1685. treasures of

  1686. wisdom and

  1687. knowledge are

  1688. found.

  1689. Oh, by your

  1690. Spirit will we

  1691. turn to you,

  1692. cling to you,

  1693. receive you,

  1694. follow you,

  1695. receive your

  1696. forgiveness,

  1697. receive your

  1698. power,

  1699. and live lives

  1700. that are truly

  1701. full,

  1702. full of your

  1703. meaning,

  1704. full of your

  1705. purpose,

  1706. full of your

  1707. joy.

  1708. Amen.
