  1. Okay, team, why don't we go ahead and make a start of it.

  2. Who knows, maybe we'll be joined by others.

  3. So thank you for taking seats, stage right, or wherever that is.

  4. Well, in our six preceding sessions, we have held up to a focused view,

  5. certain aspects of the saga of God's saving action toward his people.

  6. We've examined its originating source, its fountainhead,

  7. and God's sovereign electing love,

  8. his ancient choice of a bride for the son who would become incarnate.

  9. With the brief of a pathologist, we examine the condition in which we,

  10. the objects of his electing love, are found imprisoned,

  11. fast bound in sin and nature's night,

  12. not only incapable of lending a hand to our rescue,

  13. but actively opposing it.

  14. We shined a spotlight upon that extraordinary declaration,

  15. while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,

  16. unfolding the meaning of Christ's death as representative and substitutionary.

  17. He stood in the place of his people paying the price of their redemption.

  18. He acted atoningly for each one and everyone united to him as their federal head.

  19. His life for their life, their life in his life.

  20. We put the crosshairs of our attention upon how Christ's atoning rescue was applied individually

  21. to each elect beloved for whom it was paid.

  22. How through the all-overcoming work of the Spirit,

  23. a divine heart transplant was effected,

  24. fashioning a new heart which freely and inexorably embraces the Savior

  25. in joyful faith and heartfelt repentance.

  26. Each beloved receiving the particularized wooing of the divine bridegroom.

  27. Finally, we trace the scriptural testimony that this marriage between the elect beloved

  28. and the divine bridegroom is a union that lasts forever.

  29. For whom God has purposed forever to join together, none can thrust asunder.

  30. Every blood-bought, Spirit-secured saint shall be impregnably preserved

  31. from every vile vicissitude, each satanic stratagem, and all our own fickle infidelities.

  32. For the Son shall lose none of those the Father gave him, nor can he.

  33. For the Son shall be up for you.

  34. For the Son shall be up for you.

  35. For the Son shall be up for you.

  36. For the Son shall be up for you.

  37. For the Son shall be up for you.

  38. For the Son shall be up for you.

  39. For the Son shall be up for you.

  40. For the Son shall be up for you.

  41. For the Son shall be up for you.

  42. For the Son shall be up for you.

  43. For the Son shall be up for you.

  44. For the Son shall be up for you.

  45. For the Son shall be up for you up for you.

  46. final session we want to look back from the summit we have ascended and take in the whole

  47. panorama. Or, changing the metaphor, bring what has been our searching focused analytic

  48. eye settling on certain isolated colors and lines on the canvas to step back and take

  49. in a complete picture and see how all comes together in a single harmonious balanced and

  50. united whole. We do so through seven observations concerning God's saving action toward sinners.

  51. First notice the covenantal character of salvation. The covenantal character of salvation.

  52. One of the most remarkable things the scripture disclosed to us is that the almighty God,

  53. the creator, makes promises. And that these promises are vitally important to our relationship with him.

  54. And while God is neither capricious nor irrational, his personality, his person is unfathomably

  55. mysterious and his purposes unimaginably deep. For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

  56. neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. If we are going to depend on God's future behavior,

  57. it is only based upon his own declaration, his promises to us. And the wonderful reality

  58. is that he has made such promises. And the scripture calls them covenants.

  59. Covenants are at the center of God's saving purpose and execution. As Octavius Winslow writes,

  60. all that God gives to his people, he gives in Christ and he gives it by covenant.

  61. Nothing is bestowed at random. Nothing in disregard of the eternal compact of grace.

  62. To reveal the significance of covenant, engage for a moment in a thought experiment with me.

  63. Say the Logos, God's eternal son, takes on flesh, lays down his life and rises from the dead.

  64. What is the value of that for sinners? Do these divine acts have intrinsic salvific value?

  65. I think we would answer, well, no, or how would we know? There's nothing seemingly intrinsic to them.

  66. No, their value and saving significance for sinful humanity would have to be determined by God.

  67. This intra-Trinitarian determination, which laid the foundation for salvation, called the covenant of redemption,

  68. whereby the Father appointed the Son as the representative of an elect people for whom he would take on flesh

  69. and offer atonement for their sin by his own blood, so purchasing their redemption.

  70. The Son freely assented to this mediatorial role for which he would receive as reward a redeemed people as his bride forever.

  71. It was this compact that determined the efficacy, the value, and the fruit of Christ's mediation.

  72. Quote, the covenant of redemption is the foundation of all of our comforts, writes Richard Sims.

  73. For it is the eternal agreement in which God the Father and God the Son have provided for our salvation.

  74. The unfolding of this fountainhead covenant involved other covenantal arrangements.

  75. The covenant of works was established with Adam, requiring perfect heartfelt obedience,

  76. with life promised as reward, but with death ensuing upon the least breach.

  77. In this, Adam was constituted representative of all humanity,

  78. such that the reward of his success would be imputed to all of his posterity,

  79. as would the penalty of his failure.

  80. The covenant of works set the conditions for the covenant of grace,

  81. whereby for his elect, Christ fulfills the demands of the covenant of works.

  82. Namely, a perfect obedience from the heart to God's law,

  83. imputing to his own the record and with it the reward for his obedience.

  84. Christ also endures for his elect the deadly curse of the covenant of works,

  85. which rightly is their portion as sinners.

  86. That Christ meets the conditions of the covenant of works on behalf of his elect people

  87. makes the arrangement to them a covenant of grace.

  88. For it rests not upon what we do or promise to do,

  89. but upon what Christ has done on our behalf.

  90. In the covenant of grace, writes Thomas Boston,

  91. God freely provides a Savior and salvation by him

  92. to poor sinners without respect to their works.

  93. All these covenants God freely established,

  94. determining their stipulations and binding himself

  95. to fulfill those conditions to their purposed fruition.

  96. So covenant is the divine architecture of salvation.

  97. Well does Philip Dauteridge exult,

  98. tis mine, the covenant of his grace and every promise mine,

  99. all sprung from everlasting love and sealed by blood divine.

  100. On my unworthy favored head, its blessings all unite,

  101. blessings more numerous than the stars,

  102. more lasting and more bright.

  103. Notice, secondly,

  104. the harmony,

  105. the harmony of divine action and objective in salvation.

  106. We've traced our salvation to its fountainhead

  107. in the intra-Trinitarian covenant of redemption,

  108. whereby the united Godhead in its eternal counsel

  109. purposed to save a people

  110. and, to fulfill this purpose,

  111. assigned roles for its accomplishment.

  112. The Father,

  113. in particularizing electing love,

  114. chose out of fallen humanity

  115. a people.

  116. These elect were given to the Son,

  117. who would redeem them by dying in their place,

  118. so rescuing them from the claims and curse of the broken law

  119. and imputing to them

  120. his own perfect obedience.

  121. To these blood-bought elect,

  122. the Spirit would apply the redemption

  123. accomplished on the cross

  124. by the Son's substitutionary suffering,

  125. by regenerating them,

  126. sanctifying them,

  127. and finally and infallibly

  128. presenting them spotless and faultless

  129. to the Son

  130. as his glorified bride.

  131. Now,

  132. to recognize this compact within the Trinity

  133. is surely to recognize

  134. in this divine counsel

  135. the unity of purpose

  136. that it entails.

  137. Each of the divine rules

  138. must work harmoniously

  139. to the same end of saving a people.

  140. Whom the Father elects,

  141. the Son redeems,

  142. and the Spirit sanctifies.

  143. All the persons of the Trinity

  144. do act,

  145. writes John Owen,

  146. with the same will,

  147. purpose,

  148. and counsel,

  149. and to the same end.

  150. And notice also,

  151. as Owen observes,

  152. the objects of election,

  153. redemption,

  154. and sanctification

  155. are one and the same.

  156. The Father elects some,

  157. the Son redeems the same,

  158. and the Holy Spirit sanctifies

  159. those very persons

  160. and no other.

  161. Of course,

  162. it must be so.

  163. How could it be conceivably otherwise?

  164. The persons of the Trinity

  165. would never work

  166. at cross purposes

  167. with one another.

  168. It could never be the case

  169. that notwithstanding

  170. who the Father elected

  171. and committed to the Son,

  172. the Son would direct

  173. His atonement

  174. to a different set of people

  175. of His own choosing.

  176. Neither can we imagine

  177. the Spirit also going maverick

  178. and applying Christ's

  179. redeeming benefits

  180. to a differing number still

  181. on His own whim

  182. or independent selection.

  183. This would be absurd

  184. to imagine.

  185. The subjects of election,

  186. redemption,

  187. and sanctification

  188. are not,

  189. as Thomas Goodwin writes,

  190. at random,

  191. each group unrelated

  192. to the other.

  193. No.

  194. All the work of the Trinity

  195. is united

  196. and harmonious.

  197. The election of the Father,

  198. the redemption of the Son,

  199. and the sanctification

  200. of the Spirit,

  201. writes Stephen Chalmers,

  202. Arnach,

  203. are all but one entire work

  204. managed by distinct persons

  205. but designed

  206. for the same subjects.

  207. Now,

  208. this may strike you

  209. as so obvious

  210. that the Trinity

  211. would act harmoniously

  212. that you wonder

  213. why my emphasis,

  214. and I grant you it,

  215. should be superfluous,

  216. but for the fact that a common

  217. construal of Christ's atonement

  218. disaligns the aims and actions

  219. of the Trinity.

  220. if we construe Christ's atonement

  221. as aimed at the salvation

  222. of all,

  223. in the sense of

  224. every single son of Adam

  225. and daughter of Eve,

  226. that puts its intention

  227. out of accord

  228. with the Father's

  229. discriminating election.

  230. Do you see that?

  231. It has the Son

  232. laying down his life

  233. not for those

  234. the Father had given,

  235. rather for a wider set.

  236. It also has the Son

  237. dying for those

  238. the Spirit does not

  239. draw and sanctify.

  240. The whole salvific work

  241. of the Trinity

  242. is mismatched

  243. and discombobulated.

  244. Surely that is implausible

  245. for the unity of purpose

  246. always true of the Trinity.

  247. This construal

  248. of the Good Shepherd

  249. laying down his life

  250. for more than his sheep

  251. also involves the

  252. embarrassment

  253. of rendering

  254. Christ's atonement

  255. unavailing

  256. for the majority

  257. for whom it was intended

  258. supposedly.

  259. If his was

  260. a universal

  261. saving intent,

  262. it failed

  263. of its purpose

  264. to the extent

  265. that hell is populated

  266. by those for whom

  267. Christ died atoningly.

  268. They somehow

  269. slipped through

  270. his saving hands.

  271. they were,

  272. alas,

  273. beyond the reach

  274. of his saving arm.

  275. Fumbling saving arm,

  276. we might add.

  277. Which,

  278. to assert,

  279. states John Owen,

  280. seems to us

  281. blasphemously injurious

  282. to the wisdom,

  283. power,

  284. and perfection

  285. of God,

  286. as likewise

  287. derogatory

  288. to the worth

  289. and value

  290. of the death

  291. of Christ.

  292. Well,

  293. might we ask

  294. an answer

  295. with Spurgeon,

  296. if Jesus died

  297. for all men alike,

  298. then why

  299. is not the Spirit

  300. given to all men alike?

  301. Shall the Father

  302. elect in vain?

  303. Shall the Son

  304. bleed in vain?

  305. And shall the Spirit

  306. strive in vain?

  307. Impossible!

  308. So I,

  309. and I hope we,

  310. can scarcely

  311. disagree with Spurgeon

  312. when he affirms

  313. there is

  314. no discord

  315. in the works

  316. of God.

  317. The Father's purpose,

  318. the Son's atonement,

  319. and the Spirit's work

  320. are one salvation,

  321. moving forward

  322. with one design,

  323. and crowned

  324. with one success.

  325. Amen.

  326. Notice,

  327. thirdly,

  328. salvation is

  329. from first to last

  330. a work of grace.

  331. God's saving action

  332. had its spring

  333. in his own

  334. unconstrained

  335. good pleasure.

  336. No claim of right

  337. could have compelled

  338. God to relieve sinners

  339. from their self-inflicted

  340. ministry.

  341. He would have done

  342. humanity

  343. no wrong

  344. in leaving them

  345. in their damnation

  346. as eternal monuments

  347. to God's justice.

  348. Every mouth

  349. would be stopped

  350. in the judgment

  351. for no appeal

  352. could have had

  353. any ground.

  354. And yet,

  355. it was God's

  356. good pleasure

  357. to show his mercy

  358. to a multitude

  359. of unworthy rebels

  360. and make them

  361. recipients

  362. of his saving favor.

  363. All of grace

  364. in its inception,

  365. God's salvation

  366. is all of grace

  367. in its unfolding.

  368. It proceeds

  369. towards us

  370. not simply

  371. as the

  372. undeserving,

  373. but as the

  374. ill-deserving.

  375. That telling word

  376. in Psalm 106

  377. makes the point.

  378. Nevertheless,

  379. he saved them.

  380. What was true

  381. of us,

  382. the saved of God,

  383. which calls

  384. for this

  385. nevertheless?

  386. Moses raises

  387. the veil

  388. in the previous verse.

  389. We understood

  390. not

  391. implies

  392. we are

  393. uncomprehending.

  394. We remembered

  395. not the multitude

  396. of mercies,

  397. pegs us

  398. as thankless

  399. ingrates.

  400. Provoked him,

  401. we provoked him,

  402. attests we

  403. continually provoke

  404. God to his face.

  405. There we are,

  406. sisters and brothers.

  407. Such is

  408. our profile.

  409. Such are we

  410. whom free

  411. grace saves

  412. and who the

  413. God of all grace

  414. graciously

  415. condescends

  416. to make anew

  417. and to take

  418. into fellowship

  419. eternally.

  420. When there was

  421. nothing to

  422. commend us,

  423. but every

  424. reason for

  425. us to be

  426. cast away,

  427. nevertheless.

  428. Neither do we,

  429. as to our salvation,

  430. contribute a

  431. farthing of merit

  432. to add

  433. of our own.

  434. Neither could we.

  435. For a

  436. mere

  437. hapenny of

  438. merit

  439. would

  440. alloy

  441. grace

  442. and

  443. mingle

  444. free

  445. gift

  446. with

  447. earned

  448. wage.

  449. As Richard

  450. Sims writes,

  451. we bring

  452. nothing to

  453. God

  454. but sin

  455. and misery.

  456. He brings

  457. mercy

  458. and salvation.

  459. All

  460. is grace

  461. from first

  462. to last.

  463. Christ.

  464. So,

  465. it is not

  466. that our

  467. salvation is

  468. even especially

  469. by grace.

  470. It is

  471. exclusively

  472. by grace.

  473. As Spurgeon

  474. pointedly puts

  475. it,

  476. if there be

  477. one stitch

  478. in the garment

  479. of our

  480. righteousness

  481. which we

  482. have put

  483. there ourselves,

  484. it is

  485. hopelessly

  486. rent from

  487. top to

  488. bottom.

  489. Grace

  490. must be

  491. absolute

  492. or it is

  493. no grace

  494. at all.

  495. This

  496. vivid

  497. truth

  498. is

  499. portrayed

  500. by a

  501. reflection

  502. of Spurgeon

  503. upon God's

  504. ordinance

  505. concerning

  506. the stones

  507. of his

  508. altar

  509. in Exodus

  510. 20.

  511. If

  512. thou

  513. lift

  514. up

  515. thy

  516. tool

  517. upon

  518. it,

  519. thou

  520. hast

  521. polluted

  522. it.

  523. Spurgeon

  524. writes,

  525. God's

  526. altar

  527. was to

  528. be

  529. built

  530. of

  531. unhewn

  532. stones

  533. that

  534. no trace

  535. of human

  536. skill

  537. or labor

  538. might be

  539. seen

  540. upon it.

  541. The

  542. proud

  543. heart

  544. of man

  545. is very

  546. anxious

  547. to have

  548. a hand

  549. in the

  550. justification

  551. of the

  552. soul

  553. before

  554. God.

  555. Preparations

  556. for Christ

  557. are dreamed

  558. of,

  559. humblings

  560. and repentings

  561. are trusted

  562. in,

  563. good works

  564. are cried

  565. up,

  566. natural

  567. ability

  568. is much

  569. vaunted,

  570. and by

  571. all means

  572. the attempt

  573. is made

  574. to lift

  575. up human

  576. tools

  577. upon

  578. the

  579. divine

  580. altar.

  581. It

  582. were

  583. well,

  584. he

  585. continues,

  586. it

  587. were

  588. well

  589. if

  590. sinners

  591. would

  592. remember

  593. that

  594. so

  595. far

  596. from

  597. perfecting

  598. the

  599. Savior's

  600. work,

  601. their

  602. carnal

  603. confidences

  604. only pollute

  605. and dishonor it.

  606. The Lord

  607. alone

  608. must be

  609. exalted

  610. in the

  611. work of

  612. atonement,

  613. and not

  614. a single

  615. mark of

  616. man's

  617. chisel

  618. or hammer

  619. will be

  620. endured.

  621. There is

  622. an inherent

  623. blasphemy

  624. in seeking

  625. to add

  626. to what

  627. Christ

  628. Jesus

  629. in his

  630. dying

  631. moments

  632. declared

  633. to be

  634. finished,

  635. or to

  636. improve

  637. that

  638. in which

  639. the Lord

  640. Jehovah

  641. finds

  642. perfect

  643. satisfaction.

  644. Our

  645. salvation

  646. commenced

  647. by grace

  648. and

  649. continued

  650. by grace

  651. shall

  652. also

  653. be

  654. completed

  655. by grace.

  656. He

  657. who laid

  658. the

  659. foundation

  660. stone

  661. shall

  662. assuredly

  663. lay

  664. the

  665. final

  666. capstone.

  667. As it

  668. was said

  669. of

  670. Zerubbabel,

  671. the architect

  672. of the

  673. temple,

  674. so it

  675. shall be

  676. with the

  677. true

  678. Zerubbabel,

  679. the Lord

  680. Christ,

  681. the builder

  682. and maker

  683. of the

  684. temple

  685. of his

  686. redeemed

  687. people.

  688. Zechariah

  689. 4,

  690. 7 says,

  691. and he

  692. shall

  693. bring forth

  694. the top

  695. stone

  696. amidst

  697. shouts

  698. of grace,

  699. grace to

  700. it.

  701. God's

  702. salvation

  703. of his

  704. people

  705. from

  706. first

  707. to

  708. last,

  709. from

  710. foundation

  711. stone

  712. to

  713. capstone

  714. is

  715. all

  716. of

  717. grace.

  718. And

  719. notice

  720. fourthly,

  721. salvation

  722. is as

  723. sure

  724. and

  725. secure

  726. as

  727. God's

  728. almighty

  729. purpose.

  730. That

  731. God is

  732. the

  733. author

  734. and

  735. architect

  736. of our

  737. salvation

  738. is

  739. its

  740. security.

  741. And

  742. what

  743. God

  744. begins

  745. with

  746. purpose

  747. to

  748. complete,

  749. he

  750. invariably

  751. carries

  752. to

  753. completion.

  754. Faithful

  755. is he

  756. who has

  757. called

  758. you.

  759. He

  760. shall

  761. bring

  762. it

  763. to

  764. pass.

  765. 1 Thessalonians

  766. 524.

  767. If salvation

  768. be in

  769. any sense

  770. a work

  771. of man,

  772. it is

  773. insecure,

  774. hopelessly

  775. so.

  776. For

  777. that which

  778. man does,

  779. man

  780. may

  781. undo.

  782. As

  783. Spurgeon

  784. puts it,

  785. he who

  786. converts

  787. himself

  788. one day

  789. may

  790. unconvert

  791. himself

  792. the next.

  793. he

  794. that

  795. tie

  796. a knot

  797. with

  798. his

  799. own

  800. fingers

  801. can

  802. surely

  803. loosen

  804. that

  805. knot.

  806. But

  807. thankfully,

  808. as Jonah

  809. reminds us

  810. from the

  811. deep,

  812. salvation

  813. belongs

  814. to the

  815. Lord.

  816. Jonah

  817. 2.9

  818. How is

  819. this so?

  820. Well,

  821. salvation

  822. is parsed

  823. out within

  824. the Trinity

  825. in the

  826. covenant

  827. of redemption.

  828. And let's

  829. consider the

  830. security of

  831. each part

  832. each one

  833. takes in

  834. hand.

  835. The

  836. Father's

  837. choice,

  838. his choice

  839. of his

  840. own,

  841. will

  842. stand

  843. as his

  844. calling

  845. is

  846. irrevocable.

  847. Romans

  848. 11.29

  849. As

  850. Thomas

  851. Watson

  852. writes,

  853. God's

  854. decree

  855. of election

  856. is

  857. unchangeable.

  858. He

  859. will not

  860. blot out

  861. the names

  862. written in

  863. the book

  864. of life.

  865. John

  866. Owen makes

  867. the point

  868. citing the

  869. apostle to

  870. the Romans.

  871. Whom

  872. God

  873. calls,

  874. he

  875. justifies.

  876. Whom

  877. he

  878. justifies,

  879. he

  880. glorifies.

  881. There

  882. is no

  883. such

  884. thing

  885. as a

  886. call

  887. that

  888. does

  889. not

  890. issue

  891. in

  892. glory.

  893. As

  894. Thomas

  895. Goodwin

  896. pithily

  897. states it,

  898. the

  899. perseverance

  900. of the

  901. saints

  902. is

  903. nothing

  904. else

  905. but the

  906. immutability

  907. of God's

  908. decree

  909. taking

  910. effect

  911. in time.

  912. We

  913. really need

  914. to go

  915. no further

  916. to establish

  917. the sure

  918. security

  919. of the

  920. elect,

  921. but let's

  922. move now

  923. from the

  924. Father and

  925. the

  926. immutability

  927. of the

  928. decree,

  929. which secures

  930. our salvation,

  931. to the

  932. Son,

  933. and the

  934. effectiveness

  935. of his

  936. atonement,

  937. which also

  938. secures

  939. salvation.

  940. The

  941. Son,

  942. in his

  943. atonement,

  944. suffers the

  945. wrath imposed

  946. by the

  947. Father as

  948. judgment for

  949. the sins

  950. of his

  951. people,

  952. so

  953. satisfying

  954. the

  955. ransom

  956. to set

  957. them

  958. free.

  959. His

  960. righteous

  961. record is

  962. imputed

  963. to the

  964. elect,

  965. such

  966. that they

  967. are

  968. accepted

  969. in him,

  970. the

  971. beloved.

  972. That

  973. verdict,

  974. spoken over

  975. the Son

  976. in his

  977. baptism,

  978. is thus

  979. ours.

  980. There

  981. remains,

  982. therefore,

  983. no condemnation

  984. for those

  985. who are in

  986. Christ Jesus.

  987. Romans 8.

  988. The

  989. elect,

  990. for whom

  991. Christ bled

  992. as substitute,

  993. are by

  994. his atoning

  995. death,

  996. released

  997. and remitted

  998. from all

  999. their sin.

  1000. And in

  1001. Christ's

  1002. vicarious

  1003. righteousness,

  1004. imputed

  1005. to their

  1006. account,

  1007. what

  1008. possible

  1009. charge

  1010. could

  1011. impugn

  1012. their

  1013. record

  1014. or subvert

  1015. their

  1016. security.

  1017. Here,

  1018. we cannot

  1019. but lapse

  1020. into Pauline

  1021. language.

  1022. Who

  1023. shall bring

  1024. a charge

  1025. against

  1026. God's

  1027. elect?

  1028. It is

  1029. God

  1030. who

  1031. justifies.

  1032. Who

  1033. is there

  1034. to

  1035. condemn?

  1036. Romans 8.

  1037. 33.

  1038. Where we

  1039. tend to

  1040. go wrong

  1041. and skew

  1042. the biblical

  1043. witness

  1044. is that

  1045. seeking to

  1046. magnify the

  1047. saving grace

  1048. of God

  1049. and the

  1050. saving power

  1051. of Christ,

  1052. we declare

  1053. that God's

  1054. redeeming love

  1055. extends to

  1056. every person

  1057. and assert

  1058. that Christ

  1059. has died

  1060. to save

  1061. every last

  1062. one.

  1063. We propose

  1064. that this

  1065. is the

  1066. magnifying

  1067. measure

  1068. of God's

  1069. saving

  1070. grandeur.

  1071. But then,

  1072. to avoid

  1073. universalism,

  1074. that is,

  1075. God saves

  1076. all,

  1077. well,

  1078. then we

  1079. have to

  1080. dilute the

  1081. efficacy

  1082. of the

  1083. cross

  1084. and depreciate

  1085. the effectiveness

  1086. of God's

  1087. saving

  1088. purpose.

  1089. For we

  1090. must say

  1091. that,

  1092. after all,

  1093. nothing God

  1094. has purposed

  1095. or nothing

  1096. Christ has

  1097. done

  1098. can save

  1099. us unless

  1100. we add

  1101. something

  1102. ourselves.

  1103. The decisive

  1104. factor,

  1105. the ultimate

  1106. pivot in the

  1107. matter,

  1108. is our

  1109. self-generated

  1110. repentance

  1111. and faith.

  1112. But,

  1113. surely,

  1114. this is to

  1115. say that

  1116. Christ saves

  1117. us with

  1118. our help.

  1119. Or,

  1120. in fact,

  1121. somewhat

  1122. discordantly,

  1123. but no

  1124. less truly,

  1125. we save

  1126. ourselves

  1127. with Christ's

  1128. help.

  1129. For,

  1130. ultimately,

  1131. the issue

  1132. would hang

  1133. upon us.

  1134. The irony

  1135. is,

  1136. in a

  1137. misguided

  1138. effort to

  1139. magnify God's

  1140. saving work,

  1141. we've

  1142. diminished it.

  1143. It cannot

  1144. finally and

  1145. assuredly save.

  1146. The security

  1147. of divine

  1148. election and

  1149. atonement

  1150. is dissolved

  1151. into human

  1152. contingency

  1153. with the

  1154. frailty and

  1155. fragility of

  1156. a butterfly's

  1157. wing and

  1158. the evanescence

  1159. of a red

  1160. horizon at

  1161. sundown.

  1162. Ah,

  1163. but thankfully,

  1164. such is not

  1165. our precarious

  1166. position in

  1167. God's saving

  1168. hands.

  1169. No,

  1170. the Father

  1171. has entrusted

  1172. the elect

  1173. to Christ

  1174. to redeem

  1175. by laying

  1176. down his

  1177. life in

  1178. ransom for

  1179. them.

  1180. And as

  1181. Jesus assures

  1182. us,

  1183. in John

  1184. 6,

  1185. 37-39,

  1186. all that

  1187. the Father

  1188. gives me

  1189. will come

  1190. to me,

  1191. and whoever

  1192. comes to

  1193. me,

  1194. I will

  1195. never cast

  1196. out.

  1197. For I

  1198. have come

  1199. down from

  1200. heaven,

  1201. not to do

  1202. my own

  1203. will,

  1204. but the

  1205. will of

  1206. him who

  1207. sent me,

  1208. the Father.

  1209. And this

  1210. is the

  1211. will of

  1212. him who

  1213. sent me,

  1214. the Father,

  1215. that I

  1216. should lose

  1217. nothing of

  1218. all that

  1219. he has

  1220. given me,

  1221. but raise

  1222. it up on

  1223. the last

  1224. day.

  1225. These

  1226. are the

  1227. hands our

  1228. salvation

  1229. is in.

  1230. No one,

  1231. no one,

  1232. says Jesus,

  1233. will snatch

  1234. them out of

  1235. my hand.

  1236. my Father

  1237. who has

  1238. given them

  1239. to me

  1240. is greater

  1241. than all,

  1242. and no

  1243. one is

  1244. able to

  1245. snatch

  1246. them out

  1247. of the

  1248. Father's

  1249. hand.

  1250. John 10,

  1251. 28-29.

  1252. This

  1253. promise of

  1254. Jesus is

  1255. fulfilled by

  1256. one final

  1257. divine

  1258. handoff

  1259. for the

  1260. closing play

  1261. of salvation,

  1262. where the

  1263. Spirit

  1264. closes us

  1265. with Christ,

  1266. as the

  1267. Puritans

  1268. love to

  1269. put it,

  1270. uniting

  1271. us to

  1272. the Savior,

  1273. in whom

  1274. are all

  1275. the blood-bought

  1276. benefits of

  1277. his vicarious

  1278. life and

  1279. death.

  1280. That sweet

  1281. exchange of

  1282. our sinfulness

  1283. for his

  1284. righteousness.

  1285. New

  1286. spiritual life

  1287. imparted and

  1288. effectually

  1289. nurtured till

  1290. it is

  1291. consummated in

  1292. glory.

  1293. glory.

  1294. As we

  1295. have said,

  1296. if God

  1297. lays the

  1298. first

  1299. foundation

  1300. stone,

  1301. he shall

  1302. assuredly

  1303. lay the

  1304. crowning

  1305. capstone.

  1306. As

  1307. William

  1308. Cooper penned,

  1309. dear dying

  1310. lamb,

  1311. thy precious

  1312. blood shall

  1313. never lose

  1314. its power

  1315. till all

  1316. the ransomed

  1317. church of

  1318. God be

  1319. saved to

  1320. sin no

  1321. more.

  1322. Or as

  1323. Francis Ridley

  1324. Havergal

  1325. reassures,

  1326. if any

  1327. doubt could

  1328. conceivably

  1329. remain,

  1330. O sorrowing

  1331. sinner,

  1332. well he

  1333. knew,

  1334. ere time

  1335. began what

  1336. he would

  1337. do.

  1338. Then rest

  1339. thy hope

  1340. within the

  1341. veil.

  1342. His

  1343. covenant

  1344. mercies

  1345. shall not

  1346. fail.

  1347. O doubting

  1348. one,

  1349. eternal

  1350. three are

  1351. pledged in

  1352. faithfulness

  1353. for thee.

  1354. Claim

  1355. every promise

  1356. sweet and

  1357. sure by

  1358. covenant

  1359. oath of

  1360. God

  1361. secure.

  1362. And

  1363. notice

  1364. fifthly,

  1365. our

  1366. salvation,

  1367. in our

  1368. salvation,

  1369. all glory

  1370. goes to

  1371. God.

  1372. Who

  1373. made us?

  1374. God.

  1375. Who

  1376. remade

  1377. us?

  1378. God.

  1379. Why?

  1380. To what

  1381. purpose did

  1382. he make

  1383. and remake

  1384. us?

  1385. Well,

  1386. the well

  1387. catechized

  1388. will rightly

  1389. answer,

  1390. for his

  1391. own glory.

  1392. Psalm 106

  1393. expresses the

  1394. grand end

  1395. of our

  1396. salvation this

  1397. way.

  1398. He saved

  1399. them for

  1400. his

  1401. namesake.

  1402. Psalm 106,

  1403. 8.

  1404. What does

  1405. that mean?

  1406. It means

  1407. he saved

  1408. us to

  1409. show his

  1410. name.

  1411. That is,

  1412. give a

  1413. revelation of

  1414. what he is

  1415. like,

  1416. his nature,

  1417. and his

  1418. attributes.

  1419. He saves

  1420. us to

  1421. display his

  1422. glory and

  1423. excellency.

  1424. And while

  1425. God shows

  1426. us something

  1427. of himself

  1428. in his

  1429. creation,

  1430. the sun,

  1431. moon,

  1432. and stars,

  1433. and scattered

  1434. flowers over

  1435. the green and

  1436. laughing earth,

  1437. he shows

  1438. himself most

  1439. excellently

  1440. on the

  1441. platform of

  1442. salvation.

  1443. The phrase is

  1444. Spurgeon's,

  1445. who continues,

  1446. it was,

  1447. so to speak,

  1448. the balcony

  1449. on which God

  1450. stepped to

  1451. show himself.

  1452. The balcony

  1453. of salvation.

  1454. Here,

  1455. he manifests

  1456. himself by

  1457. saving souls.

  1458. Here it is

  1459. seen in

  1460. sparkling

  1461. luminescence,

  1462. his love,

  1463. justice,

  1464. power,

  1465. faithfulness,

  1466. in a word,

  1467. glory.

  1468. As Burroughs,

  1469. Jeremiah Burroughs

  1470. observes,

  1471. the Lord takes

  1472. delight in

  1473. no work like

  1474. this work.

  1475. This is

  1476. the masterpiece

  1477. of God

  1478. and his

  1479. glory.

  1480. And the

  1481. reason why

  1482. salvation can

  1483. not simply

  1484. be an

  1485. excellent

  1486. display of

  1487. his glory,

  1488. but also

  1489. an exclusive

  1490. display of

  1491. his glory,

  1492. is because,

  1493. as John

  1494. Owen puts

  1495. it,

  1496. the whole

  1497. work of

  1498. our redemption

  1499. in its

  1500. contrivance,

  1501. constitution,

  1502. and accomplishment

  1503. is of God

  1504. and not of

  1505. ourselves,

  1506. and therefore

  1507. all the

  1508. glory of

  1509. it belong

  1510. solely unto

  1511. him.

  1512. Stephen

  1513. Charnock

  1514. echoes

  1515. this truth.

  1516. God

  1517. is the

  1518. author

  1519. of all

  1520. the good

  1521. in salvation,

  1522. and man

  1523. is only

  1524. the subject

  1525. of it.

  1526. He finds

  1527. us dead

  1528. and gives

  1529. us life,

  1530. finds us

  1531. enemies

  1532. and makes

  1533. us friends.

  1534. All is

  1535. from God,

  1536. nothing

  1537. from ourselves.

  1538. Tavius

  1539. Winslow

  1540. heartily

  1541. resonates.

  1542. Christ

  1543. is all

  1544. in the

  1545. great work

  1546. of salvation.

  1547. He began

  1548. it,

  1549. he carries

  1550. it on,

  1551. and he

  1552. will

  1553. complete it.

  1554. Not a

  1555. particle

  1556. of the

  1557. glory

  1558. belongs

  1559. to the

  1560. sinner.

  1561. And how

  1562. could it

  1563. be otherwise?

  1564. What

  1565. possible

  1566. rightful

  1567. glory could

  1568. be siphoned

  1569. off to

  1570. us

  1571. sinners?

  1572. As Watson

  1573. rightly

  1574. reminds us,

  1575. we bring

  1576. nothing to

  1577. our salvation

  1578. but the

  1579. sin that

  1580. made it

  1581. necessary.

  1582. No.

  1583. We are

  1584. on solid,

  1585. and should

  1586. we say

  1587. hallowed

  1588. ground,

  1589. in affirming

  1590. the crown

  1591. of glory

  1592. and salvation

  1593. fits no

  1594. other brow

  1595. than God's

  1596. alone.

  1597. He

  1598. alone,

  1599. to him

  1600. alone,

  1601. belongs

  1602. all

  1603. adoration

  1604. and all

  1605. acclaim.

  1606. And does

  1607. this not

  1608. express

  1609. the impulse

  1610. of your

  1611. redeemed

  1612. heart

  1613. to say

  1614. with the

  1615. psalmist,

  1616. not to

  1617. us,

  1618. not to

  1619. us,

  1620. but to

  1621. your name

  1622. be glory.

  1623. Psalm 115.

  1624. 1.

  1625. And notice

  1626. finally,

  1627. or sixthly,

  1628. God is

  1629. all

  1630. sovereign

  1631. in salvation.

  1632. This is

  1633. simply a

  1634. specific

  1635. application

  1636. of God's

  1637. sovereignty

  1638. in all

  1639. things.

  1640. The

  1641. amplified

  1642. assertion

  1643. of our

  1644. first study.

  1645. God works

  1646. all things

  1647. after the

  1648. counsel of

  1649. his will,

  1650. Ephesians

  1651. 1.

  1652. And our

  1653. salvation

  1654. is no

  1655. exception.

  1656. God is

  1657. the source,

  1658. the means,

  1659. and the

  1660. end of

  1661. everything

  1662. that is,

  1663. both in

  1664. nature and

  1665. in grace.

  1666. For

  1667. from him

  1668. and through

  1669. him and

  1670. to him

  1671. are all

  1672. things,

  1673. affirms the

  1674. apostle in

  1675. Romans 11.

  1676. 36.

  1677. The

  1678. sovereignty

  1679. of God,

  1680. writes

  1681. Samuel

  1682. Rutherford,

  1683. layeth the

  1684. key of

  1685. salvation

  1686. upon

  1687. Christ's

  1688. shoulder

  1689. and leaves

  1690. no share

  1691. of it

  1692. to the

  1693. creature.

  1694. I should

  1695. have read

  1696. that softly

  1697. because that's

  1698. from his

  1699. letters.

  1700. And Samuel

  1701. Rutherford's

  1702. letters are

  1703. so gentle.

  1704. Winslow,

  1705. Octavius

  1706. Winslow,

  1707. is of the

  1708. same conviction.

  1709. The

  1710. sovereign

  1711. grace of

  1712. God lies

  1713. at the

  1714. foundation of

  1715. our salvation.

  1716. From his

  1717. own free

  1718. and eternal

  1719. love it

  1720. sprang,

  1721. and by

  1722. that same

  1723. love it

  1724. is carried

  1725. on.

  1726. Denial

  1727. of God's

  1728. sovereignty,

  1729. apart from

  1730. being a

  1731. hopeless

  1732. cross-current

  1733. to the

  1734. whole stream

  1735. of Scripture,

  1736. miscasts

  1737. the Almighty

  1738. in relation

  1739. to the

  1740. sinner

  1741. and

  1742. misconstrues

  1743. Christ's

  1744. gracious

  1745. gospel

  1746. invitations.

  1747. within this

  1748. throng

  1749. framework,

  1750. Christ's

  1751. appeals

  1752. take on

  1753. the character

  1754. quote,

  1755. not as

  1756. expressions

  1757. of the

  1758. tender

  1759. patience

  1760. of a

  1761. mighty

  1762. sovereign,

  1763. writes

  1764. Packer,

  1765. but as

  1766. the pathetic

  1767. pleadings of

  1768. impotent

  1769. desire.

  1770. And so

  1771. the

  1772. enthroned

  1773. Lord is

  1774. suddenly

  1775. metamorphosed

  1776. into a

  1777. weak,

  1778. futile

  1779. figure

  1780. tapping

  1781. forlornly

  1782. at the

  1783. door of

  1784. the human

  1785. heart,

  1786. which he

  1787. is powerless

  1788. to open.

  1789. This is from

  1790. the introduction

  1791. to John

  1792. Owens,

  1793. the death

  1794. of death

  1795. and death

  1796. of Christ.

  1797. If you

  1798. ever want

  1799. to read

  1800. anything

  1801. that is

  1802. unbelievably

  1803. clarifying

  1804. about

  1805. salvation

  1806. other than

  1807. Scripture,

  1808. that is

  1809. the essay

  1810. to read.

  1811. J.I.

  1812. Packer's

  1813. introduction

  1814. to John

  1815. Owens,

  1816. the death

  1817. of death

  1818. and the

  1819. death

  1820. of Christ.

  1821. Yeah.

  1822. It's

  1823. difficult

  1824. to suppress

  1825. the suspicion

  1826. that this

  1827. common

  1828. denial

  1829. of God's

  1830. sovereignty

  1831. has its

  1832. inveterate

  1833. appeal

  1834. in part

  1835. because it

  1836. reinforces

  1837. the supposition

  1838. of our

  1839. sinful

  1840. hearts

  1841. which are

  1842. flattered

  1843. to entertain

  1844. and loathed

  1845. to abandon.

  1846. The presupposition

  1847. that we

  1848. are the

  1849. masters of

  1850. our destiny,

  1851. that in

  1852. our own

  1853. hand lies

  1854. the scepter

  1855. of our

  1856. fate.

  1857. Simply to

  1858. state this

  1859. boldly is,

  1860. I trust,

  1861. sufficient

  1862. for its

  1863. dismissal.

  1864. It is

  1865. a conviction

  1866. not

  1867. seaworthy

  1868. and wrecked

  1869. on the

  1870. Gibraltar

  1871. of the

  1872. Lord

  1873. Christ

  1874. as the

  1875. author

  1876. and

  1877. completer

  1878. of our

  1879. faith.

  1880. Hebrews

  1881. 12.

  1882. 2.

  1883. In our

  1884. sober

  1885. moments of

  1886. insight and

  1887. self-knowledge,

  1888. do we not

  1889. resonate

  1890. with the

  1891. testimony of

  1892. Spurgeon?

  1893. I believe

  1894. the doctrine

  1895. of election

  1896. because I

  1897. am quite

  1898. sure that

  1899. if God

  1900. had not

  1901. chosen me,

  1902. I should

  1903. never have

  1904. chosen him.

  1905. And I

  1906. am sure

  1907. he chose

  1908. me before

  1909. I was

  1910. born,

  1911. or else

  1912. he would

  1913. never have

  1914. chosen me

  1915. afterwards.

  1916. And if

  1917. this seems

  1918. undeniably

  1919. true to

  1920. you,

  1921. be of

  1922. good cheer,

  1923. for it

  1924. is solid

  1925. testimony

  1926. that his

  1927. sovereign

  1928. grace has

  1929. been savingly

  1930. at work

  1931. in you.

  1932. But let

  1933. us conclude

  1934. and with

  1935. this

  1936. epitome

  1937. as to

  1938. the doctrines

  1939. of grace,

  1940. I called

  1941. it seven,

  1942. finally.

  1943. Very

  1944. simple

  1945. summary,

  1946. the whole

  1947. time together.

  1948. God

  1949. saves

  1950. sinners.

  1951. And I

  1952. want in

  1953. conclusion

  1954. to accent

  1955. that middle

  1956. term,

  1957. saves,

  1958. with the

  1959. claim that

  1960. God

  1961. actually

  1962. saves

  1963. sinners,

  1964. for he

  1965. is,

  1966. as Isaiah

  1967. exalts,

  1968. mighty to

  1969. save.

  1970. Isaiah

  1971. 63,

  1972. 1.

  1973. God

  1974. does not

  1975. cast up

  1976. some

  1977. construction

  1978. for the

  1979. possibility

  1980. of salvation.

  1981. Christ

  1982. carries

  1983. each

  1984. of his

  1985. elect

  1986. fully

  1987. across

  1988. the river

  1989. of judgment,

  1990. safely

  1991. onto the

  1992. shores

  1993. of salvation.

  1994. He

  1995. does not

  1996. build

  1997. a pontoon

  1998. platform

  1999. which

  2000. stretches

  2001. just

  2002. far

  2003. enough

  2004. across

  2005. the river

  2006. that those

  2007. of

  2008. inclination

  2009. motivation,

  2010. skill and

  2011. energy

  2012. may just

  2013. leap

  2014. by some

  2015. spiritual

  2016. or moral

  2017. athleticism

  2018. the remaining

  2019. distance or so

  2020. and so

  2021. with God's

  2022. aid

  2023. save

  2024. themselves.

  2025. No.

  2026. God

  2027. saves

  2028. sinners.

  2029. God's

  2030. election

  2031. of particular

  2032. sinners

  2033. is an

  2034. election

  2035. to

  2036. salvation.

  2037. election.

  2038. Some

  2039. would have

  2040. us regard

  2041. God's

  2042. election

  2043. as the

  2044. election

  2045. of no

  2046. one in

  2047. particular

  2048. but rather

  2049. an election

  2050. of a

  2051. duly

  2052. qualified

  2053. class of

  2054. people

  2055. that is

  2056. those who

  2057. will of

  2058. their own

  2059. accord

  2060. believe in

  2061. Jesus.

  2062. Who

  2063. that in

  2064. fact will

  2065. be,

  2066. well,

  2067. God's

  2068. foreknowledge

  2069. can

  2070. identify

  2071. on the

  2072. basis of

  2073. their

  2074. contingent

  2075. choice

  2076. for Christ

  2077. then God's

  2078. election

  2079. of those

  2080. self-identified

  2081. simply

  2082. acknowledges

  2083. their own

  2084. selection.

  2085. Notice

  2086. that on

  2087. this

  2088. construal

  2089. God's

  2090. election

  2091. does not

  2092. determine,

  2093. in fact,

  2094. it doesn't

  2095. influence

  2096. in the

  2097. slightest

  2098. who

  2099. is chosen.

  2100. this

  2101. election,

  2102. if it

  2103. be fair

  2104. to even

  2105. grant

  2106. such a

  2107. notion

  2108. the name

  2109. election,

  2110. saves

  2111. no one.

  2112. Such,

  2113. we insist,

  2114. is a far

  2115. cry from

  2116. the scriptural

  2117. meaning of

  2118. election

  2119. which

  2120. actually

  2121. chooses

  2122. the elect

  2123. for salvation,

  2124. ensuring

  2125. that their

  2126. salvation

  2127. will be

  2128. divinely

  2129. accomplished.

  2130. Similarly

  2131. flawed,

  2132. is the

  2133. thrawn

  2134. construal

  2135. of the

  2136. Son's

  2137. redemptive

  2138. work,

  2139. which

  2140. presents

  2141. Christ's

  2142. cross as

  2143. removing an

  2144. obstacle that

  2145. stands in the

  2146. way of God's

  2147. offering forgiveness

  2148. to sinners,

  2149. the unsatisfied

  2150. claims of

  2151. justice.

  2152. Christ's

  2153. atonement

  2154. allows God

  2155. to freely

  2156. offer forgiveness

  2157. to any and

  2158. all who might

  2159. accept it.

  2160. death.

  2161. But notice

  2162. that such

  2163. a redemption

  2164. doesn't

  2165. actually

  2166. redeem

  2167. anyone.

  2168. It simply

  2169. makes redemption

  2170. a possibility.

  2171. Any,

  2172. all,

  2173. or none

  2174. may avail

  2175. themselves of

  2176. should they

  2177. so choose.

  2178. Christ's

  2179. death

  2180. does not

  2181. secure

  2182. the salvation

  2183. of anyone.

  2184. It simply

  2185. creates the

  2186. opportunity.

  2187. This

  2188. contrasts

  2189. starkly

  2190. with seeing

  2191. Christ's

  2192. cross

  2193. as his

  2194. substitutionary

  2195. endurance

  2196. of the

  2197. penalty for

  2198. sin in the

  2199. place of his

  2200. own elect

  2201. by which

  2202. God is

  2203. reconciled

  2204. to those

  2205. in whose

  2206. place

  2207. Christ

  2208. stood.

  2209. Forever

  2210. removing

  2211. their

  2212. liability

  2213. to

  2214. punishment

  2215. by paying

  2216. it for

  2217. them.

  2218. Here

  2219. is a

  2220. redemption

  2221. that

  2222. actually

  2223. redeems.

  2224. A

  2225. cross

  2226. that

  2227. actually

  2228. saves.

  2229. And

  2230. similarly

  2231. with the

  2232. Spirit.

  2233. It is

  2234. proposed

  2235. that we

  2236. understand

  2237. the Spirit's

  2238. drawing of

  2239. sinners

  2240. simply to

  2241. consist

  2242. in a

  2243. bare

  2244. bestowal

  2245. of an

  2246. understanding

  2247. of God's

  2248. saving work

  2249. and its

  2250. summons.

  2251. Aha!

  2252. I get it!

  2253. So that's

  2254. what God

  2255. is up to

  2256. in Christ.

  2257. And that

  2258. is what I'm

  2259. invited to

  2260. believe and

  2261. put my

  2262. trust in.

  2263. A bare

  2264. understanding.

  2265. But again,

  2266. such

  2267. suasion,

  2268. as it is

  2269. called,

  2270. does not.

  2271. Neither

  2272. is even

  2273. permitted to

  2274. itself

  2275. ensure

  2276. that anyone

  2277. will ever

  2278. make the

  2279. response

  2280. of faith.

  2281. It is

  2282. a drawing

  2283. that might

  2284. not succeed

  2285. in drawing

  2286. at all.

  2287. Its

  2288. effect

  2289. is up

  2290. for grabs

  2291. for its

  2292. effectiveness

  2293. pivots

  2294. entirely upon

  2295. how its

  2296. subject is

  2297. inclined to

  2298. respond,

  2299. if at

  2300. all.

  2301. The

  2302. Spirit's

  2303. work here

  2304. may well

  2305. be utterly

  2306. ineffectual

  2307. and in

  2308. vain to

  2309. secure the

  2310. divine

  2311. purpose.

  2312. But this

  2313. vision is

  2314. alien to the

  2315. scriptural

  2316. picture of

  2317. the Spirit's

  2318. working

  2319. effectually

  2320. upon the

  2321. flint-hearted

  2322. elect

  2323. sinner,

  2324. removing her

  2325. brininess

  2326. through a

  2327. transplant of

  2328. a pliant

  2329. heart,

  2330. which rejoices

  2331. to embrace

  2332. the Savior

  2333. in faith

  2334. and repentance.

  2335. Here,

  2336. we have a

  2337. drawing that

  2338. actually draws

  2339. with infallible

  2340. all-overcoming

  2341. efficacy,

  2342. a drawing

  2343. that actually,

  2344. not potentially,

  2345. saves.

  2346. As Packer

  2347. writes,

  2348. Christ did

  2349. not win

  2350. hypothetical

  2351. salvation for

  2352. hypothetical

  2353. believers,

  2354. a mere

  2355. possibility of

  2356. salvation for

  2357. any who

  2358. might possibly

  2359. believe,

  2360. but a real

  2361. salvation for

  2362. his own

  2363. chosen people.

  2364. His precious

  2365. blood really

  2366. does save.

  2367. Its saving

  2368. power does not

  2369. depend on

  2370. faith being

  2371. added to

  2372. it.

  2373. Its saving

  2374. power is

  2375. such that

  2376. faith flows

  2377. from it.

  2378. The cross

  2379. secured the

  2380. full salvation

  2381. of all for

  2382. whom Christ

  2383. died.

  2384. Oh,

  2385. sisters and

  2386. brothers,

  2387. let us not

  2388. dilute,

  2389. or should I

  2390. say dissolve,

  2391. the gospel

  2392. into some

  2393. conception in

  2394. which God

  2395. elects

  2396. nobody in

  2397. particular.

  2398. Christ died

  2399. for nobody

  2400. in particular.

  2401. The Spirit

  2402. quickens nobody

  2403. in particular.

  2404. In short,

  2405. that God the

  2406. Trinity,

  2407. in their

  2408. saving purpose,

  2409. in fact,

  2410. cannot secure

  2411. the salvation

  2412. of anyone,

  2413. but must

  2414. make do

  2415. with nothing

  2416. more than

  2417. fond wishes

  2418. for the

  2419. salvation of

  2420. a people,

  2421. and that for

  2422. all the

  2423. Trinity can

  2424. do,

  2425. the Son

  2426. might have

  2427. died,

  2428. and none

  2429. be saved

  2430. at all.

  2431. Christ might

  2432. have laid

  2433. down his

  2434. life,

  2435. yet be

  2436. jilted at

  2437. the altar.

  2438. No bride

  2439. for him.

  2440. If this

  2441. be the

  2442. case,

  2443. well,

  2444. perhaps we

  2445. should regard

  2446. Isaiah's

  2447. title of

  2448. God as

  2449. mighty to

  2450. save,

  2451. as the

  2452. inflation of

  2453. fond hopefulness,

  2454. or mere

  2455. hyperbole.

  2456. Ah, no.

  2457. Sisters and

  2458. brothers,

  2459. will we not

  2460. affirm together,

  2461. as for me

  2462. and my

  2463. house,

  2464. we will

  2465. cherish the

  2466. name,

  2467. the Lord

  2468. mighty to

  2469. save,

  2470. and trust

  2471. in its

  2472. glorious

  2473. truthfulness

  2474. as the

  2475. description

  2476. of the

  2477. divine

  2478. protagonist

  2479. at the

  2480. heart of

  2481. the doctrines

  2482. of grace,

  2483. so precious

  2484. to the

  2485. people of

  2486. God

  2487. across the

  2488. ages,

  2489. and indeed

  2490. shall be

  2491. worlds

  2492. without end.

  2493. So we

  2494. conclude

  2495. with the

  2496. full-hearted

  2497. affirmation,

  2498. shall we

  2499. not,

  2500. God

  2501. saves

  2502. sinners

  2503. and

  2504. fittingly

  2505. respond

  2506. with the

  2507. awe and

  2508. wonder of

  2509. the

  2510. apostle,

  2511. oh,

  2512. the depths

  2513. of the

  2514. riches

  2515. of the

  2516. wisdom

  2517. and

  2518. knowledge

  2519. of God.

  2520. Amen

  2521. and

  2522. amen.

  2523. Well,

  2524. friends,

  2525. miraculously,

  2526. we have a

  2527. little bit of

  2528. time,

  2529. and I'm

  2530. happy to

  2531. entertain

  2532. any

  2533. questions

  2534. or comments

  2535. or

  2536. outbursts

  2537. of praise

  2538. and

  2539. Thanksgiving.

  2540. Yes?

  2541. So on a

  2542. personal

  2543. and

  2544. kind of

  2545. practical

  2546. fleshing

  2547. of

  2548. hell,

  2549. how...

  2550. Oh,

  2551. alas,

  2552. I have

  2553. to be

  2554. practical.

  2555. How in

  2556. your life

  2557. following

  2558. Jesus,

  2559. what have

  2560. been some

  2561. junctures

  2562. and what

  2563. have been

  2564. some things

  2565. that have

  2566. helped

  2567. you

  2568. in living

  2569. a

  2570. seriously

  2571. devoted

  2572. life,

  2573. like life

  2574. towards

  2575. holiness

  2576. of living,

  2577. but also

  2578. one that

  2579. walks in

  2580. the fuel

  2581. of grace?

  2582. Like,

  2583. how,

  2584. what has

  2585. helped you

  2586. receive

  2587. God's

  2588. grace

  2589. and an

  2590. effective

  2591. salvation

  2592. for you?

  2593. Yeah,

  2594. yeah.

  2595. Yeah,

  2596. a very

  2597. helpful

  2598. question,

  2599. and I

  2600. think

  2601. maybe I'll

  2602. elucidate

  2603. that somewhat

  2604. by contrast.

  2605. If,

  2606. if indeed

  2607. I feel

  2608. like in

  2609. any way

  2610. my salvation

  2611. is going

  2612. to pivot

  2613. upon my

  2614. various

  2615. contributions,

  2616. my zeal,

  2617. my diligence,

  2618. am I waking

  2619. up every

  2620. single morning

  2621. and making

  2622. sure that I

  2623. have my

  2624. quiet time,

  2625. these sorts

  2626. of things,

  2627. there's just

  2628. an undertone

  2629. of anxiety

  2630. and insecurity

  2631. about this.

  2632. There's kind

  2633. of a fear

  2634. and an

  2635. anxiousness

  2636. that's going

  2637. to accompany

  2638. all of those

  2639. very good

  2640. things.

  2641. But if

  2642. instead,

  2643. in contrast

  2644. to that,

  2645. I am

  2646. overwhelmed

  2647. with fresh

  2648. visions

  2649. of these

  2650. truths

  2651. that we

  2652. have examined,

  2653. that God

  2654. has saved

  2655. me,

  2656. and that

  2657. that is

  2658. done and

  2659. it is

  2660. secure as

  2661. his purpose,

  2662. it is secure

  2663. as his

  2664. atoning death,

  2665. it is secure

  2666. as his

  2667. infallible

  2668. application

  2669. by his

  2670. spirit,

  2671. then there

  2672. rightly so,

  2673. and I would

  2674. say inevitably

  2675. so,

  2676. wells up

  2677. a sense

  2678. of gratitude

  2679. that is

  2680. so energizing

  2681. that you

  2682. enter into

  2683. these same

  2684. disciplines

  2685. that you

  2686. might do

  2687. otherwise

  2688. out of a

  2689. bubbling joy

  2690. and an

  2691. alacrity

  2692. in that

  2693. security.

  2694. So I,

  2695. just like

  2696. that?

  2697. And an

  2698. hour later,

  2699. gone.

  2700. Yep,

  2701. there we go.

  2702. But then we

  2703. need to read.

  2704. So,

  2705. you know,

  2706. we just,

  2707. if we know

  2708. God's love

  2709. to us is

  2710. unconditional,

  2711. that will

  2712. really energize

  2713. us.

  2714. When I was a

  2715. little boy,

  2716. I played

  2717. soccer.

  2718. My dad was

  2719. a great

  2720. soccer player.

  2721. He would

  2722. always,

  2723. when we

  2724. would play,

  2725. he would

  2726. always pick

  2727. me first,

  2728. even though I

  2729. was a little

  2730. tyke and

  2731. couldn't really

  2732. help him win

  2733. the game,

  2734. and he was

  2735. really competitive,

  2736. so that was

  2737. a real loss

  2738. to him,

  2739. but he just

  2740. picked me

  2741. first.

  2742. I can still

  2743. hear his

  2744. words.

  2745. I choose

  2746. my son.

  2747. He's my

  2748. first choice.

  2749. So I'd go

  2750. out there

  2751. and I'd

  2752. play soccer,

  2753. and I wasn't

  2754. playing to gain

  2755. his approval

  2756. all along.

  2757. I was playing

  2758. out of it.

  2759. I knew I

  2760. had it.

  2761. And that

  2762. made me,

  2763. just,

  2764. it gave me

  2765. a joy that

  2766. made me run

  2767. and run as

  2768. fast as my

  2769. little legs

  2770. could carry

  2771. me.

  2772. And I loved

  2773. the game,

  2774. and I knew

  2775. that if I

  2776. swung at the

  2777. ball and

  2778. missed and

  2779. fell on my

  2780. fanny,

  2781. he accepted

  2782. me still.

  2783. I wasn't

  2784. playing for

  2785. his acceptance.

  2786. I was

  2787. playing out

  2788. of it.

  2789. And that

  2790. made me a

  2791. good player,

  2792. and it made

  2793. me a joyful

  2794. player.

  2795. And I've

  2796. known from

  2797. other of my

  2798. soccer mates

  2799. that there

  2800. are other

  2801. dynamics.

  2802. I've seen

  2803. guys playing

  2804. for the

  2805. hopeful,

  2806. elusive favor

  2807. of their

  2808. father that

  2809. pivoted upon

  2810. each successive

  2811. performance,

  2812. and they were

  2813. unhappy.

  2814. As joy-inducing

  2815. as the game

  2816. of soccer is,

  2817. they were

  2818. unhappy,

  2819. and they

  2820. became less

  2821. skilled players

  2822. in the

  2823. anxiety that

  2824. gnaws at

  2825. you.

  2826. So that's

  2827. just one way

  2828. where it's a

  2829. different dynamic.

  2830. Not playing

  2831. for God's

  2832. approval,

  2833. but from

  2834. it.

  2835. But from

  2836. it.

  2837. Yeah.

  2838. Thanks for

  2839. forcing me to

  2840. get, at

  2841. least wander

  2842. into the

  2843. suburbs of

  2844. practicality.

  2845. right?

  2846. Yeah.

  2847. Any other

  2848. questions or

  2849. comments?

  2850. Okay, team.

  2851. Well, thank you

  2852. so much for a

  2853. fun session

  2854. together, and

  2855. thanks again

  2856. to Tyler

  2857. for running

  2858. along with

  2859. us.

  2860. And let me

  2861. thank the

  2862. Lord for

  2863. us.

  2864. Father, how

  2865. wonderful it

  2866. is that

  2867. these things

  2868. could be

  2869. true.

  2870. If we

  2871. thought that

  2872. somehow we

  2873. had concocted

  2874. them, we

  2875. would be

  2876. suspicious that

  2877. surely that is

  2878. just a vain

  2879. hope.

  2880. But you have

  2881. declared these

  2882. things with

  2883. such clarity

  2884. and such

  2885. vividness in

  2886. your word,

  2887. that then your

  2888. spirit has

  2889. taken and

  2890. applied to

  2891. our hearts

  2892. such that

  2893. we see

  2894. their

  2895. sparkling,

  2896. gleaming

  2897. truth and

  2898. reality before

  2899. us.

  2900. You have

  2901. won our

  2902. hearts.

  2903. Lord, may

  2904. we indeed

  2905. embrace these

  2906. things in our

  2907. heart, and

  2908. may they

  2909. buoy us

  2910. with a

  2911. joy unspeakable

  2912. like a

  2913. gurgling

  2914. stream.

  2915. And may

  2916. they affect

  2917. as they

  2918. surely will

  2919. for this

  2920. electing love

  2921. unites us

  2922. with Christ.

  2923. In our

  2924. union with

  2925. Christ, we

  2926. are born

  2927. anew, and

  2928. you have

  2929. placed your

  2930. spirit and

  2931. you regenerated

  2932. us in our

  2933. person, so

  2934. we will

  2935. indeed respond

  2936. with a

  2937. dynamic that

  2938. grows out of

  2939. a renewed

  2940. nature that

  2941. will begin to

  2942. reflect the

  2943. image of

  2944. Christ in

  2945. us.

  2946. So you

  2947. will have a

  2948. beautiful,

  2949. glorified

  2950. bride.

  2951. May it be

  2952. so, Lord,

  2953. for your

  2954. glory and

  2955. our great

  2956. delight.

  2957. Worlds

  2958. without end.

  2959. Amen.

  2960. Bluetooth Bluetooth

  2961. Oh, yeah.
