  1. Well, Happy New Year. It's good to see you all here. Glad that you have joined us this morning for worship.

  2. ! It's good to gather together in God's house.

  3. You know, I've been reflecting as we move to the new year on the fact that it's now been 23 years that I've been able to be a part of Trinity as a church.

  4. And it's been pretty amazing to see what God has done in the last 20 years as we've seen God renew and revitalize this new season that's been going on in this last year.

  5. If you don't know, Trinity started in 1973, but there was a turning point after a decline in the 90s and in the last 20 years.

  6. It's been a beautiful thing to see what God has done in our church.

  7. And I've been blessed to be part of the leadership, the servant leadership for that church for most of it.

  8. And we have, as the leaders, wrestled.

  9. Because young churches have lots of things to think about.

  10. We think about leadership structure. We think about programming decisions.

  11. We think about caring for children and families and seniors.

  12. Service planning, ministry priorities, building and physical plant, and so on and so forth.

  13. And it's been a blessing to see how God has worked in the midst of all those things.

  14. And my prayer is that God would continue to do this in our church.

  15. But, you know, as you wrestled through, as you think through that list, as we have wrestled through, there's always been a danger.

  16. That the pressures and the urgency and the challenges of those decisions could cause us to lose sight of what is central to the church.

  17. What is central to what God has called us to, and to allow these other things to become, in fact, our practical center.

  18. We make these decisions under the aegis of what our church needs.

  19. We wrestle and even fight over what we need to do.

  20. We fall into the trap of thinking, if only we had X program or XY personnel or Z priority, then we would finally be the church that we think we should be.

  21. I don't know about you, but this isn't a problem only in our church, isn't it?

  22. It also can be a problem in our own spiritual lives, isn't it?

  23. It's a new year.

  24. It's a great time to review and think, how do I want to grow this year?

  25. Maybe you're a spiritual seeker and you're thinking, I don't know whether God exists.

  26. What do I want to do to pursue that this year?

  27. Maybe you've been a Christian for a while and you're thinking, what am I going to do this year?

  28. New devotional practices or spiritual disciplines that are going to get me to the next step or the next level.

  29. Maybe there are new patterns of obedience that I need to lean into in tithing or fasting or giving or evangelism or serving the poor or whatever it is.

  30. Maybe you have new reading lists and strategies of growing in theology and biblical knowledge.

  31. New curricula are things to do.

  32. Now look, just like with the church, in our own personal lives, these are good things for us to think about.

  33. These are not unimportant things.

  34. These are not meaningless things.

  35. They are good for us to think about, both our personal lives and in our church.

  36. But they are not the center.

  37. And this brings us to our passage this morning.

  38. We are going to begin a series in the book of Galatians.

  39. And we're going to start today in Galatians and do it through most of the spring.

  40. And we're going to be introducing the book over the next couple of weeks.

  41. Because if you read ahead, you will see that the context and the reality of what's going on in the church of Galatia

  42. is the content of the first two chapters of the book in many ways.

  43. So I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the background today.

  44. I will simply say this, the Galatians was probably one of the first letters that Paul wrote.

  45. And he was writing to a church that he had planted, that he was involved in starting as he preached the gospel

  46. in the region of Galatia in what is now modern Turkey.

  47. And this early church had been navigating questions.

  48. What do we believe and how do we practice it and how do we live it out?

  49. And it seems that in the midst of it, they had lost their center.

  50. And so Paul reminds them.

  51. He writes to remind them and to teach them what the center must be.

  52. So this morning, we're just going to look at the greeting.

  53. Verses 1 through 5 of chapter 1 in Galatians 1.

  54. In many ways, it's a normal greeting that could be summarized.

  55. Paul and the brothers with him to the church in Galatia, grace and peace to you.

  56. But you'll see as we read it that he fills that out with a few other comments along the way.

  57. And in fact, in those comments, we will see his opening salvo of teaching

  58. about what is meant to be at the center of the church.

  59. So, page 913, if you're looking at it in a few Bibles,

  60. we're going to read Galatians chapter 1, verses 1 through 5.

    Galatians 1:1–5

  61. Let's read along together.

  62. Paul, an apostle, not from men nor through man,

  63. but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead

  64. and all the brothers who are with me.

  65. To the churches of Galatia, grace to you and peace from God our Father

  66. and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins

  67. to deliver us from the present evil age

  68. according to the will of our God and Father

  69. to whom be glory forever and ever.

  70. Amen.

  71. Please pray with me as we look at God's Word.

  72. Lord, we thank you for this new year.

  73. We thank you for this new series.

  74. Lord, we thank you for your Word,

  75. which is not new at all,

  76. but in fact has stood for years and centuries,

  77. Lord, as your revelation to us.

  78. And Lord, I pray for your help this morning.

  79. I pray that you would help me to speak clearly your Word.

  80. I pray that your Spirit would enable me.

  81. Lord, I pray for all of us,

  82. that our hearts would be willing to receive your Word.

  83. Lord, that our minds would be enabled to understand it.

  84. And Lord, that you would move our will,

  85. Lord, to respond in obedience.

  86. Lord, to love what you love

  87. and to do what you have called us to do.

  88. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  89. Amen.

  90. So friends, this is not rocket science.

  91. The center of the church is the gospel of God.

  92. The gospel originates with God.

  93. The gospel centers on God's saving work in Jesus.

  94. And the gospel's goal is the glory of God.

  95. So if you're taking notes, there's your outline.

  96. We'll look at the gospel originates with God.

  97. The gospel centers on God's saving work in Jesus.

  98. And the gospel goal is God's glory.

  99. And the gospel of God, that is,

  100. this is the good news that we proclaim.

  101. This is the very core.

  102. This is what we say we are all about.

  103. When we say we're about a gospel,

  104. it is some kind of good news.

  105. But we need to make sure we get that good news

  106. properly oriented, right?

  107. And as you've seen from this,

  108. part of what we will see is that the good news

  109. that Paul exhorts us to embrace

  110. focuses on God.

  111. So let's look at it through that lens.

  112. So first, in chapter, in verses one and two,

  113. the gospel originates with God.

  114. Paul, in his greeting, calls himself an apostle.

  115. This is common.

  116. It's in most of his letters.

  117. An apostle at one level simply means someone who is sent.

  118. So the Evangelical Dictionary of the New Testament

  119. says that an apostle is some authorized as a messenger

  120. and representative of the crucified and risen Lord

  121. to bring the gospel to the churches.

  122. This is the particular role that Paul had,

  123. that the 12 had,

  124. the 12 who were the followers of Jesus during his life.

  125. They are a unique group in history.

  126. But this is what Paul has.

  127. He identifies himself and says,

  128. this is who I am, right?

  129. Now, we might read today the New Testament

  130. and think Paul is an organizational leader.

  131. He's an innovator.

  132. He's a church planter.

  133. He's someone who built and shaped the work

  134. with strategies and plans.

  135. And he did all of those things, true.

  136. But for Paul, when he talks about what he did,

  137. he said, this is the most important thing

  138. I want you to know.

  139. I am not an apostle by my own choice.

  140. I'm not an apostle because other people told me

  141. that I should be an apostle.

  142. I am an apostle because of God, right?

  143. Not from man, not through man,

  144. but through Jesus Christ and God the Father.

  145. Paul wants us to know that his ministry

  146. is all about God, God's call and God's will

  147. who sent him.

  148. It wasn't because Barnabas took him under his wing.

  149. It wasn't because James and Peter

  150. gave their seal of approval.

  151. But it was because God had done it.

  152. Do you remember how Paul describes

  153. his experience of God's call on his life?

  154. This is from Acts chapter 26, verses 15 through 18,

    Acts 26:15–18

  155. as Paul is explaining where he comes from.

  156. He says this.

  157. He had this encounter with Jesus

  158. as he was going to persecute the Christians.

  159. And I'm going to shorten the passage

  160. and just pick up here.

  161. And he says, and I, that is Paul.

  162. And I said, who are you, Lord?

  163. And the Lord said, I am Jesus,

  164. whom you are persecuting.

  165. But rise and stand on your feet,

  166. for I have appeared to you for this purpose,

  167. to appoint you as a servant and witness

  168. to the things in which you have seen me

  169. and to those in which I will appear to you,

  170. delivering you from your people

  171. and from the Gentiles to whom I am sending you,

  172. to open their eyes so that they may turn

  173. from darkness to light and from the power

  174. of Satan to God,

  175. that they may receive forgiveness of sins

  176. and a place among those who are sanctified

  177. by faith in me.

  178. See, Paul had this amazing experience.

  179. If you don't know the story,

  180. Paul was a persecutor of the church

  181. and God appeared to him miraculously.

  182. Jesus appeared to him and struck him blind.

  183. And there's a whole story,

  184. and I couldn't expand the whole thing

  185. because we'd be here all day

  186. just talking about that part.

  187. But God intervened in his life to say,

  188. I am calling you in this unique and special role

  189. to take the gospel to people who haven't heard it.

  190. And what Paul wants to remind the Galatians

  191. and us this morning

  192. is that the origin of his gospel

  193. was not his best ideas or his plans,

  194. but it was God.

  195. It was God who gave him that message,

  196. and it was God who gave him that commission

  197. to proclaim it.

  198. And it's interesting, too,

  199. if you notice at the end of verse 1,

  200. that he goes on to say,

  201. it's not just any God,

  202. but it's a particular God.

  203. It's an amazing God, right?

  204. It's a God who raised Jesus from the dead.

  205. Right?

  206. Why is this important?

  207. Because Paul is saying

  208. that the message that I'm preaching

  209. is about a God who intervened

  210. in space-time history.

  211. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  212. actually happened.

  213. If there had been movie cameras in that day,

  214. or security cameras,

  215. or whatever it would have been,

  216. they could have actually filmed

  217. the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  218. because it actually happened.

  219. It's not just an idea.

  220. It's not just a metaphor

  221. for some hopeful new thing,

  222. but it actually physically happened

  223. in space-time history.

  224. And Paul says,

  225. my ministry of the gospel

  226. originated from a God

  227. who interceded and acted

  228. in real life today.

  229. Now, this is important in our culture,

  230. is it not?

  231. We live in a relativistic,

  232. pluralistic culture

  233. where religion is generally viewed

  234. as one truth among many.

  235. Religion has been relegated

  236. to private and experiential beliefs.

  237. That's good for you.

  238. I'm glad you hold…

  239. I'm glad you've had that experience.

  240. I'm glad you think those things

  241. because I'm glad it's helpful for you.

  242. And religion has been really brought down

  243. to a level of psychological help

  244. of some sort,

  245. that it's somehow useful for us

  246. regardless of whether it's true.

  247. But Paul reminds us,

  248. even in this very beginning salvo,

  249. that the Bible,

  250. the gospel of the Bible

  251. challenges that worldview.

  252. It says that this is a historically verifiable God

  253. who acted in time-space history,

  254. right?

  255. That the God of the Bible

  256. has revealed Himself

  257. in a person who you could touch,

  258. who you could talk to

  259. if you were alive in the first century,

  260. and whom we have a historical account,

  261. not merely a mythological tale,

  262. to tell about who He is

  263. when we talk about Jesus.

  264. And as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15,

  265. if Christ wasn't raised from the dead,

  266. if this is all just a great myth,

  267. then we are the most to be pitied

  268. because we are fools,

  269. because we have staked our hope

  270. on something that is not actually true.

  271. But Paul says,

  272. no, it is true.

  273. And the gospel that I preach

  274. did not come from me

  275. or from any other human being.

  276. It came from God.

  277. But he says more, does he not,

  278. as he goes on in verses 3 and 4.

  279. It doesn't only originate with God,

  280. but it focuses on God and God's work.

  281. The gospel centers on Jesus' saving work.

  282. So this is verses 3 and 4,

  283. and we see this normal greeting,

  284. grace and peace,

  285. which would be a common greeting in Greek

  286. in that time.

  287. So it doesn't necessarily

  288. have great meaning,

  289. but Paul fills it with great meaning

  290. by expanding on

  291. what those terms mean

  292. in light of the Christian gospel.

  293. Right?

  294. Grace, that is,

  295. the true meaning of it is

  296. undeserved favor,

  297. and peace with God

  298. is a result of God's work

  299. in Jesus Christ

  300. who gave himself for our sins

  301. and to deliver us

  302. from this present evil age.

  303. Do you see how this greeting

  304. that could have just been,

  305. hey, grace and peace to you,

  306. I wish you well,

  307. and moving on,

  308. he says, no, no, no.

  309. Grace and peace to you

  310. because God has worked

  311. in this world.

  312. This is the very core

  313. of the gospel,

  314. that Jesus came to give his life

  315. for the sins of human beings,

  316. of your sin and my sin.

  317. He came as a substitute

  318. to take our place

  319. in dying for our sin.

  320. He came as a sacrifice,

  321. dying to pay the penalty of death,

  322. the wages of sin

  323. that we deserved.

  324. He bore our sins

  325. so that Jesus,

  326. or so that God the Father

  327. could forgive our sin.

  328. This is the great exchange

  329. that Jesus gave himself for us.

  330. He gave his righteousness,

  331. he gave his life

  332. to us

  333. and took upon himself

  334. our sin,

  335. our death,

  336. our judgment

  337. that we deserve.

  338. And so grace and peace

  339. is not just a formality here,

  340. but an incredibly rich greeting.

  341. God has worked

  342. so that you might know

  343. the grace of God

  344. because of what Jesus did.

  345. God has worked

  346. so that you might have

  347. peace with God

  348. because the enmity,

  349. the broken relationship

  350. that you have broken

  351. because of your sin,

  352. God has dealt with

  353. at the cross

  354. finally

  355. and fully

  356. and completely.

  357. He doesn't just do this

  358. so that we can be forgiven

  359. of our sin

  360. and restored to a relationship

  361. with God,

  362. but also,

  363. as it says,

  364. to deliver us

  365. from this present evil age.

  366. Now again,

  367. we could preach

  368. a whole sermon

  369. on what the New Testament

  370. is talking about

  371. in terms of the ages,

  372. but let me give you

  373. a brief summary,

  374. right?

  375. The Bible

  376. and particularly

  377. the New Testament

  378. talks about

  379. the gospel is coming

  380. to bring a transfer

  381. of ages.

  382. We live now

  383. in this present evil age

  384. and we all know

  385. that we live in it

  386. because you open the news

  387. every day

  388. and we see

  389. we live in a terrible age.

  390. All sorts of terrible things happen

  391. and when we go home,

  392. when we go to bed at night

  393. and in the stillness

  394. of our hearts,

  395. we look into our own hearts

  396. and we realize

  397. this present evil age

  398. isn't just out there,

  399. but it's in my own heart.

  400. I too am full

  401. of all sorts of sin

  402. and darkness,

  403. of pride

  404. and pettiness

  405. and anger

  406. and frustration

  407. and envy.

  408. Where sin and death

  409. still reign in humanity,

  410. this is the present evil age

  411. and our hearts

  412. are in captivity

  413. to these dark powers.

  414. But Jesus came

  415. and died on the cross

  416. and rose from the dead

  417. to defeat sin and death,

  418. to defeat those things

  419. so that He might transfer us

  420. from the kingdom

  421. of this present age

  422. to the age

  423. of His beloved Son,

  424. to the coming age

  425. that is the kingdom of God.

  426. Right?

  427. And here's the amazing thing

  428. about it.

  429. When Jesus came into the world,

  430. He inaugurated that.

  431. Right?

  432. He said,

  433. the kingdom of God

  434. is among you.

  435. And the beginning,

  436. the in-breaking

  437. of this new age

  438. is still happening now

  439. through the church,

  440. through the preaching

  441. of the gospel,

  442. as human hearts

  443. are transformed

  444. by the message

  445. of good news

  446. that in Jesus

  447. we can be forgiven

  448. of our sin,

  449. that through repentance

  450. and faith

  451. we can be transformed

  452. and begin to live

  453. not as slaves

  454. to this present evil age anymore,

  455. but in a new life

  456. that we have with God

  457. that will stretch

  458. to all eternity.

  459. Right?

  460. And we know

  461. that we're still waiting

  462. for the fullness of this.

  463. Right?

  464. We know

  465. that this deliverance

  466. is still a future thing

  467. in its fullness,

  468. but the core of it

  469. and the kernel of it

  470. has already happened.

  471. And for those

  472. who have placed

  473. their faith in Christ,

  474. for those who have known

  475. the renewing,

  476. the spiritual rebirth

  477. that comes,

  478. we are already

  479. a part of this age to come

  480. that is no longer

  481. dominated by sin and death,

  482. but instead

  483. by joy

  484. and by eternal life

  485. with God.

  486. This is the good news

  487. of the gospel.

  488. This is what God

  489. has done for us.

  490. And when Paul says,

  491. grace and peace to you,

  492. and I want to remind you

  493. what that's about.

  494. It's about what God

  495. has done for us

  496. in Jesus Christ.

  497. Now,

  498. it's worth us thinking

  499. for a few minutes

  500. how easily we might

  501. get the gospel wrong.

  502. because we see that

  503. as we keep reading

  504. Galatians,

  505. the Galatians are getting

  506. their gospel wrong,

  507. right?

  508. In that context,

  509. right,

  510. in the early,

  511. in the first century

  512. where Christianity

  513. was coming out of Judaism

  514. in a significant way,

  515. there was a huge discussion

  516. in the early church

  517. about how does

  518. the work of Jesus

  519. relate to the Old Testament

  520. and the Old Testament law.

  521. And there were some

  522. who were saying,

  523. yeah,

  524. Jesus is great,

  525. but we still need

  526. to keep the law.

  527. We still need to be

  528. doing this thing.

  529. So circumcision,

  530. dietary laws,

  531. and ritual separation

  532. from those who are unclean,

  533. we have to keep doing

  534. those things in order

  535. to be saved,

  536. in order to be God's people.

  537. Now,

  538. I'm just going to put

  539. a pause there

  540. because that's what

  541. the next two chapters

  542. are about in Galatians.

  543. So come back next week

  544. and you'll hear

  545. all the answers

  546. to why that's not

  547. the gospel.

  548. But know that Paul

  549. is saying

  550. that is not the gospel.

  551. It's unlikely

  552. that many of us

  553. here today

  554. are thinking,

  555. oh, yeah,

  556. I need to keep

  557. my dietary laws.

  558. I don't know

  559. if I should have

  560. had that lobster

  561. last weekend

  562. or whatever.

  563. It's unlikely

  564. that that would be

  565. our version

  566. of misunderstanding

  567. the gospel.

  568. But here are two ways

  569. that I think

  570. maybe are a lot closer

  571. to home

  572. that we might

  573. misunderstand the gospel.

  574. The first one

  575. is that

  576. I think

  577. in our context

  578. many would say

  579. that

  580. in order to be

  581. right with God

  582. we just need

  583. to be a good person.

  584. If we're good enough

  585. God will accept us.

  586. If we're generally

  587. better than the people

  588. around us

  589. who are,

  590. you know,

  591. if we think

  592. we're meeting

  593. some general standard

  594. of goodness

  595. isn't that enough?

  596. And even

  597. in the church

  598. where we acknowledge

  599. God

  600. we just think

  601. God wants me

  602. to be a good person

  603. and that's what

  604. it means

  605. to know Him

  606. and to follow Him.

  607. But friends,

  608. do you see

  609. why this is not

  610. the gospel of God?

  611. First,

  612. because it denies

  613. the reality

  614. of human sinfulness

  615. that our hearts

  616. are

  617. inescapably

  618. wicked

  619. and rebellious

  620. against God

  621. and have broken

  622. our relationship

  623. with God

  624. and are unable

  625. to restore it

  626. on our own.

  627. We do not have

  628. the righteousness

  629. in and of ourselves

  630. or goodness

  631. enough to overcome

  632. our sinfulness

  633. in order to have

  634. fellowship

  635. with a holy God.

  636. But secondly,

  637. because it places

  638. the weight

  639. of our salvation

  640. on us.

  641. I have to be good.

  642. I have to be good enough.

  643. And the most crushing thing

  644. is when you think

  645. you're a good person

  646. and then you do

  647. something bad.

  648. You know those NBA players

  649. who get tossed

  650. out of a game

  651. because they do

  652. something terribly egregious?

  653. They like haul off

  654. and punch someone

  655. and then after the game

  656. what do they say?

  657. I'm really sorry,

  658. that wasn't me.

  659. No,

  660. it was you.

  661. It was you

  662. at your worst.

  663. And that's true

  664. for all of us.

  665. We will never

  666. buy our

  667. good enough.

  668. Attempts to be

  669. good enough people

  670. be able to save

  671. ourselves from sin.

  672. Only in Christ

  673. can we do it.

  674. So that's one version

  675. that I think is common

  676. in our culture broadly

  677. is that we think

  678. the gospel is

  679. if you're a good enough person

  680. God will think

  681. okay, you're okay.

  682. There can be

  683. an even more

  684. and I'll use this word

  685. carefully

  686. evangelical.

  687. By that I mean

  688. the part of the

  689. Protestant church

  690. generally that holds

  691. to the Bible

  692. as authoritative

  693. that holds to

  694. salvation by grace alone.

  695. Even in churches

  696. that would say

  697. yes, Jesus died

  698. on the cross

  699. for my sins.

  700. We often can fall

  701. into believing

  702. that the gospel

  703. is that when we

  704. believe in Jesus

  705. enough

  706. that will save us.

  707. Right?

  708. If

  709. if I wake up

  710. one day

  711. and I'm like

  712. oh my faith

  713. is really weak

  714. I don't know

  715. if I'm really saved.

  716. I'm struggling today.

  717. My devotions

  718. were really bad.

  719. My belief

  720. I don't know.

  721. I'm really

  722. I'm just feeling

  723. weak today.

  724. And there's some

  725. of us

  726. who would

  727. who have heard

  728. the message

  729. saying well

  730. you just need

  731. to believe more.

  732. You need to

  733. really believe.

  734. Come on

  735. muster up

  736. that energy

  737. and that faith

  738. to have more

  739. devotion

  740. and more

  741. commitment

  742. and we might

  743. follow this through

  744. with a burst

  745. of new

  746. spiritual disciplines

  747. and new

  748. obedience

  749. and new

  750. things.

  751. And again

  752. none of those

  753. things are bad

  754. in and of themselves

  755. but if we think

  756. that this

  757. new

  758. new fervor

  759. is going to say

  760. oh now I know

  761. that I'm saved

  762. we need to be

  763. very very careful

  764. about this

  765. because it is not

  766. the strength

  767. of our faith

  768. that saves us

  769. but the object

  770. of our faith

  771. that saves us.

  772. This is what

  773. Paul is reminding

  774. us of

  775. in this passage.

  776. It is about

  777. what God

  778. has done

  779. and Jesus

  780. Christ

  781. has done

  782. everything

  783. that is sufficient

  784. for our salvation.

  785. Jesus has done

  786. everything

  787. through his

  788. death and

  789. resurrection

  790. and we

  791. merely

  792. receive this

  793. by faith.

  794. And even

  795. this friends

  796. is a gift.

  797. Right?

  798. Ephesians 2

  799. 8 and 9

  800. For by grace

  801. you have been

  802. saved through

  803. faith

  804. and this is not

  805. your own doing.

  806. It is the gift

  807. of God

  808. not a result

  809. of works

  810. so that no one

  811. may boast.

  812. Do you see

  813. how God

  814. centered

  815. Paul's

  816. understanding

  817. of the gospel

  818. is?

  819. It's about

  820. what God

  821. has done

  822. in Jesus Christ

  823. and even

  824. we can only

  825. believe it

  826. because God

  827. is at work

  828. in us

  829. giving us

  830. faith

  831. to believe

  832. these things.

  833. Paul's focus

  834. and ours

  835. must be

  836. on God

  837. in the midst

  838. of it.

  839. And this

  840. leads to

  841. the very end

  842. of our passage

  843. does it not?

  844. Our very last

  845. point

  846. which is

  847. the gospel

  848. goal

  849. is the glory

  850. of God.

  851. Paul ends

  852. his greetings

  853. in verse 5

  854. with

  855. to whom

  856. be glory

  857. forever

  858. and ever.

  859. Amen.

  860. Now this

  861. is religious

  862. speak

  863. at the highest

  864. level.

  865. This is stuff

  866. that we

  867. can throw

  868. around.

  869. If you've

  870. grown up

  871. in church

  872. or read

  873. scripture

  874. you throw

  875. this around

  876. like it's

  877. popcorn.

  878. It's cheap

  879. but for Paul

  880. it's unique.

  881. This is the

  882. only greeting

  883. in which

  884. he pointed

  885. to the

  886. glory of

  887. God

  888. in this

  889. way

  890. in his

  891. very

  892. greeting

  893. and he

  894. wants us

  895. as he

  896. wanted the

  897. Galatian

  898. church

  899. to turn

  900. their hearts

  901. and their

  902. eyes

  903. to put

  904. God

  905. in the

  906. center.

  907. God

  908. is the

  909. goal of

  910. the gospel

  911. that his

  912. glory

  913. would be

  914. seen.

  915. His glory

  916. being the

  917. manifold

  918. expressions

  919. of his

  920. beauty

  921. and majesty

  922. and greatness

  923. that these

  924. would be

  925. displayed

  926. and they

  927. would be

  928. seen by

  929. us

  930. and responded

  931. to by

  932. worship

  933. by praise

  934. by obedience

  935. by all the

  936. things that we

  937. are called

  938. to do

  939. to live out

  940. our lives

  941. as God's

  942. people

  943. but we

  944. do this

  945. in response

  946. to and

  947. in order

  948. to bring

  949. glory to

  950. him

  951. so that

  952. he may

  953. be the

  954. center

  955. of it.

  956. Right?

  957. In Paul's

  958. mind

  959. God is

  960. always

  961. the lead

  962. character

  963. in the

  964. story

  965. God

  966. is always

  967. the sun

  968. around which

  969. the planets

  970. orbit

  971. in their

  972. paths

  973. God

  974. is always

  975. the monarch

  976. who reigns

  977. and who is

  978. the center

  979. of the

  980. kingdom

  981. and whose

  982. name is

  983. praised

  984. in his

  985. realm

  986. God

  987. is the

  988. one

  989. for

  990. whom

  991. it is

  992. worth

  993. counting

  994. all things

  995. as loss

  996. for the

  997. sake

  998. of knowing

  999. him

  1000. and being

  1001. found

  1002. in him

  1003. not having

  1004. a righteousness

  1005. of our

  1006. own

  1007. but having

  1008. that which

  1009. comes

  1010. through faith

  1011. in Jesus

  1012. as Paul

  1013. says in

  1014. Philippians

  1015. 3

  1016. and friends

  1017. we need

  1018. to be

  1019. aware

  1020. of how

  1021. much

  1022. our

  1023. heart

  1024. resists

  1025. this

  1026. the human

  1027. heart

  1028. always

  1029. wants

  1030. to put

  1031. us

  1032. in the

  1033. center

  1034. it is

  1035. the very

  1036. core

  1037. of what

  1038. happened

  1039. in the

  1040. garden

  1041. of Eden

  1042. when Adam

  1043. and Eve

  1044. were tempted

  1045. with the

  1046. thought

  1047. you could

  1048. be like

  1049. God

  1050. you could

  1051. de-center

  1052. God

  1053. from the

  1054. center

  1055. from the

  1056. middle

  1057. of everything

  1058. and put

  1059. yourself

  1060. there

  1061. instead

  1062. and they

  1063. succumbed

  1064. to it

  1065. and friends

  1066. we do

  1067. this every

  1068. day

  1069. I'm sure

  1070. you've heard

  1071. this example

  1072. before

  1073. but you know

  1074. those conversations

  1075. you have

  1076. in your

  1077. mind

  1078. where you

  1079. are having

  1080. an argument

  1081. with someone

  1082. you always

  1083. win

  1084. right

  1085. you always

  1086. win

  1087. you always

  1088. say the

  1089. right thing

  1090. that's our

  1091. human heart

  1092. putting ourselves

  1093. in the

  1094. center

  1095. if you've

  1096. ever had

  1097. a roommate

  1098. or a spouse

  1099. or a child

  1100. you know

  1101. that someone

  1102. else

  1103. invading

  1104. your

  1105. universe

  1106. challenges

  1107. your

  1108. centeredness

  1109. and so

  1110. we fight

  1111. over

  1112. whatever

  1113. how the

  1114. dishwasher

  1115. is loaded

  1116. or how

  1117. late

  1118. we get

  1119. to stay

  1120. up

  1121. or whatever

  1122. it is

  1123. why do

  1124. we do

  1125. this

  1126. because

  1127. we

  1128. are so

  1129. prone

  1130. to be

  1131. the

  1132. center

  1133. of our

  1134. worlds

  1135. Paul

  1136. reminds us

  1137. that we

  1138. were created

  1139. in a world

  1140. where God

  1141. was the

  1142. center

  1143. where God

  1144. is the

  1145. center

  1146. and we

  1147. were created

  1148. to find

  1149. our place

  1150. as his

  1151. creation

  1152. to glorify

  1153. him

  1154. to see

  1155. his beauty

  1156. and the beauty

  1157. of his

  1158. creation

  1159. and to reflect

  1160. back to him

  1161. through praise

  1162. and worship

  1163. the glory

  1164. that he

  1165. deserves

  1166. and most

  1167. of all

  1168. in the

  1169. storyline

  1170. of the

  1171. Bible

  1172. through the

  1173. gospel

  1174. because this

  1175. is the

  1176. place where

  1177. we see

  1178. his glory

  1179. most fully

  1180. presented

  1181. not in

  1182. creation

  1183. but in

  1184. redemption

  1185. where Jesus

  1186. Christ

  1187. the son

  1188. of God

  1189. took on

  1190. human form

  1191. walked on

  1192. this earth

  1193. to be

  1194. our savior

  1195. who went

  1196. to the

  1197. cross

  1198. to die

  1199. for us

  1200. who was

  1201. then raised

  1202. from the

  1203. dead

  1204. this is

  1205. where the

  1206. glory of

  1207. God

  1208. is most

  1209. fully seen

  1210. and it's

  1211. not about

  1212. us at

  1213. all

  1214. it is

  1215. for us

  1216. but it's

  1217. not about

  1218. us

  1219. it's about

  1220. God

  1221. and his

  1222. love

  1223. and his

  1224. action

  1225. in Jesus

  1226. Christ

  1227. for us

  1228. and friends

  1229. in light

  1230. of this

  1231. then

  1232. a truly

  1233. gospel

  1234. centered

  1235. church

  1236. is a

  1237. God

  1238. centered

  1239. church

  1240. that sees

  1241. everything

  1242. like John

  1243. the Baptist

  1244. we must

  1245. decrease

  1246. so that

  1247. God

  1248. would

  1249. increase

  1250. in

  1251. our

  1252. hearts

  1253. in our

  1254. relationships

  1255. in our

  1256. church

  1257. life

  1258. in our

  1259. witness to

  1260. the community

  1261. and to

  1262. our world

  1263. oh

  1264. Trinity

  1265. may we

  1266. be such

  1267. a church

  1268. that the

  1269. gospel

  1270. may be

  1271. our

  1272. center

  1273. and that

  1274. God

  1275. would be

  1276. glorified

  1277. in us

  1278. let's

  1279. pray

  1280. Lord we

  1281. are thankful

  1282. to you

  1283. this morning

  1284. that you

  1285. have not

  1286. left us

  1287. that you

  1288. have not

  1289. left us

  1290. in the

  1291. small
