  1. Two nights ago, as I was coming to church, I had a battle in my soul. I was running late. I needed a place to park.

  2. The garage was full, and the spots out back that are reserved for the church were filled with delivery trucks.

  3. I confess, I cherished sinful thoughts in my heart.

  4. I thought about jumping into the Amazon truck that clearly was running and driving away and parking it somewhere else.

  5. I thought about simply parking my van next to their truck and leaving it stuck.

  6. I actually thought about letting air out of their tires.

  7. I'm not proud of this. The battle for my soul was real,

  8. and I sinned in my thoughts, if not in my actions.

  9. I wanted to be a better Christian. I wanted to think godly thoughts, but in my own power, I was struggling greatly.

  10. Today, I want to talk about how we can actually live the Christian life the way God wants us to.

  11. Many of us here want to follow Christ, want to live lives that reflect Him,

  12. and sometimes we feel like we can fake it well enough to start to feel good about ourselves for a while.

  13. And yet, this is a struggle, is it not?

  14. There's a booklet that I used when I worked for Crew describing this condition.

  15. It says this,

  16. people who trust in their own efforts and strength to live the Christian life will experience failure and frustration,

  17. as will those who live to please themselves rather than God.

  18. How do we escape this failure and frustration in our Christian lives?

  19. This is what our passage this morning will bring us to, will help us to understand.

  20. So, if you are reading along in the Pew Bibles, we are in Galatians chapter 5, verses 16 through 26.

    Galatians 5:16–26

  21. It's on page 915, 916 in the Pew Bible, and we're going to go ahead and read that passage and then pray together.

  22. So, please follow along with me as I read God's Word.

  23. Galatians chapter 5, starting in verse 16.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  24. But I say, walk in the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  25. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.

  26. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

  27. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

  28. Now, the works of the flesh are evident in sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery,

  29. enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies,

  30. and things like these. I warn you as I warned before that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  31. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control.

  32. Against such things there is no law, and those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  33. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

  34. Let's pray together. Lord, help us this morning as we look into this Word.

  35. Lord, as we consider what it is that You have called us to, and what it is that You have done to help us.

  36. Lord, we pray, O Lord, we pray. We pray for Your work in our hearts.

  37. Lord, that You would fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we might walk in the power of Your Spirit each day.

  38. Lord, I pray for Your help, that You would help me to speak as I ought this morning.

  39. Pray that under the preaching of Your Word, we would all sit, Lord, and that You would do Your work in us.

  40. And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  41. So, if you were here two weeks ago, you will know that we've already preached on this passage.

  42. So, if you were here today and you weren't here two weeks ago, let me strongly encourage you to go to our website,

  43. go back and listen to the first sermon, which is an explanation of the whole passage.

  44. And as I said two weeks ago, today is almost like a full-on application sermon.

  45. So, we're going to talk about what does this look like?

  46. What does it look like to live a faithful Christian life by depending on the power of the Holy Spirit?

  47. Our key text that we're leaning into this morning is verse 25.

  48. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

  49. What does that look like?

  50. What does it mean to walk in the Spirit?

  51. And this is our outline.

  52. This is where we're going to go.

  53. First, we're going to talk about principles of walking in the Spirit.

  54. Secondly, we're going to talk about practices of walking in the Spirit.

  55. And finally, we're going to return to the question of power of walking in the Spirit.

  56. So, that's where we're going this morning.

  57. So, we're going to start with principles of depending on the Spirit.

  58. There are things that I feel like we need to say before we get into examples

  59. about the broad understanding of how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

  60. Richard's going to put up a slide with a number of texts.

  61. We're not going to read all of them because we would be here till 1 o'clock this afternoon.

  62. But I almost never say this, but if you want to take out your phone, take a picture of that,

  63. or write down those texts while I'm walking through them,

  64. I'm going to give you six principles from these texts

  65. that you can then go back and read these Scriptures later to consider more fully.

  66. So, here we go.

  67. First one is that the Holy Spirit's purpose is to glorify Christ as He comes into our life.

  68. This is what Jesus tells us in John 16.

  69. It says, He will glorify me when He comes.

  70. So, the Holy Spirit is here to magnify Christ in our lives.

  71. The second thing we need to say is that all believers in Christ have the Spirit of God in them.

  72. So, Ephesians 1, 13 and 14 refers to all believers as sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  73. That is, that the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within every believer.

  74. So, it is not something we need to get after the fact,

  75. but something we get at the moment of salvation.

  76. The third principle is this.

  77. Looking at Titus 3, 3 through 7,

  78. that is, the Holy Spirit comes to transform us.

  79. That though we had old practices when we were enslaved to sin,

  80. through the washing and regeneration,

  81. that is, the giving of new spiritual life,

  82. the Holy Spirit allows us to forsake an old life

  83. and to take on a new life

  84. because we've been justified and saved by Christ,

  85. redeemed to be new people,

  86. God's people in the world.

  87. The fourth principle is that the battle

  88. between the desires of our sinful nature,

  89. what we are apart from Christ,

  90. and God's Spirit in us as believers,

  91. the ongoing battle is real.

  92. Let me refer to my sermon two weeks ago.

  93. Go back and listen to it.

  94. Galatians 5, 16 and 17 says,

  95. these desires exist within Christians

  96. and are in opposition to one another.

  97. And so this battle is normal.

  98. The fifth principle is that the process,

  99. the picture of growth for a Christian

  100. is to put off sin

  101. and to put on being more like Christ.

  102. This is Ephesians 4, verses 20 through 24.

    Ephesians 4:20–24

  103. And it talks about having a former manner of life

  104. that you forsake, that you'd get rid of.

  105. This is the same idea we talked about last week.

  106. In 1 John, the end of 1 John 1

  107. and the beginning of 1 John 2,

  108. that we can't say that we have no sin,

  109. but when we confess our sin,

  110. God is faithful and just,

  111. and we turn from that sin and repentance

  112. and turn towards a new life

  113. that God is able to give us

  114. because of the forgiveness that we have in Christ.

  115. Finally, verse 6.

  116. The sixth principle in all of this

  117. as we think about is that the battle

  118. between our sinful nature and God's Spirit

  119. at its core is fought at the heart level,

  120. not at a behavioral level.

  121. In Mark 7, Jesus reminds the people,

  122. it's not what happens on the outside of us

  123. that defiles us,

  124. but it's that our hearts are defiled

  125. and what comes out of us

  126. is what is truly the problem.

  127. And so when God comes to redeem us,

  128. part of what He says,

  129. remember the new covenant promise,

  130. He will give us a new heart,

  131. then we will know God's law and do it.

  132. He wants our hearts to be transformed,

  133. not simply so that we look like better Christians,

  134. but so that we are transformed people

  135. who love God

  136. and out of that love,

  137. display the characteristics of God

  138. more and more.

  139. So it is about our heart transformation.

  140. Right?

  141. And so this is the big picture

  142. of what the Holy Spirit is doing,

  143. and that was my like five minutes

  144. of the doctrine of sanctification,

  145. sort of.

  146. It's not even complete by any means,

  147. but it's a beginning of thinking about this.

  148. And part of what this passage

  149. that Paul is giving us

  150. in chapter 5

  151. in the whole thing from 16 to 26

  152. is to say,

  153. God has given you as believers

  154. the Holy Spirit.

  155. Don't go back to living in your old way

  156. because He's given you the power

  157. to live in a different way.

  158. We are able to engage in this battle

  159. against our sin nature

  160. and not only engage in it,

  161. but we're able to see the fruit of the Spirit

  162. in increasing measure in our lives.

  163. So as commentator Tom Schreiner says,

  164. he says,

  165. Christians should know that we have

  166. because of work of Christ

  167. a new quality of life

  168. that is the result of the Spirit's work.

  169. The old age no longer reigns over believers.

  170. The old Adam has been crucified

  171. with its passions and desires

  172. so that the flesh no longer enslaves believers.

  173. In other words,

  174. believers enjoy a substantial,

  175. significant,

  176. and observable victory

  177. in their new life in Christ.

  178. Since believers live in the interval

  179. between the already and the not yet,

  180. perfection is not their portion.

  181. And yet we should be living with hope

  182. that God is doing,

  183. God has done for us

  184. what is necessary for us

  185. to have a growing ability

  186. to show and display Christ-likeness in us.

  187. And Paul's wanting to encourage us

  188. to do that,

  189. to say,

  190. you believer,

  191. don't give in to sin.

  192. Don't think that sin

  193. continues to control your life

  194. and you are helpless.

  195. God has given you His Spirit

  196. so that you can

  197. not only fight this battle,

  198. but incrementally,

  199. but certainly have a trajectory

  200. towards Christ-likeness

  201. and away from sin.

  202. So that's the first point.

  203. This is what God is doing.

  204. These are the principles.

  205. So the practice,

  206. what does it actually look like?

  207. I'm going to give you

  208. a definition briefly

  209. and then I'm going to give you,

  210. we're going to spend

  211. a bunch of time on examples.

  212. I'm hoping you guys

  213. will get a sense

  214. from these examples

  215. of what it might look like

  216. to actually fight this battle

  217. on a fairly granular level.

  218. Here's the definition.

  219. How do we fight

  220. this battle against sin?

  221. How do we walk in the Spirit?

  222. We walk by faith.

  223. And that means trusting in

  224. and depending on

  225. the empowering presence

  226. of the Holy Spirit

  227. in our lives

  228. to apply the Word of God

  229. and the work of Christ

  230. to transform us

  231. so that we might

  232. increasingly reflect

  233. the character

  234. and love of Christ

  235. in our lives.

  236. Okay?

  237. So it's a walk of faith,

  238. trusting and depending

  239. on God

  240. to do work in us

  241. through His Word

  242. focused on the work of Christ

  243. to bring transformation.

  244. There's a lot there.

  245. I wish I could preach

  246. a whole sermon on that idea.

  247. But let's keep going.

  248. What does it look like?

  249. What does it look like?

  250. And here's the thing

  251. that I need you to hear

  252. from right up front.

  253. There's no three-step program.

  254. I love Crew.

  255. They created a great

  256. little booklet,

  257. but it's not a booklet

  258. that you can get through

  259. in eight pages

  260. and then go,

  261. oh, I know how to do this.

  262. It's not.

  263. At one level,

  264. it's a much more dynamic

  265. reality of our relationship

  266. with God.

  267. And so I want you to hear me

  268. not giving three-step programs,

  269. but principles

  270. that you can apply.

  271. In fact,

  272. I'm going to give you portraits

  273. and you can pick and choose

  274. and see what's going to be

  275. helpful for you

  276. as you think about this battle.

  277. So first,

  278. sexual temptation.

  279. I raise this because

  280. it's in the passage,

  281. right,

  282. and because it's such

  283. a powerful part

  284. of our world today,

  285. right?

  286. And the sin here,

  287. the desire of the flesh,

  288. is that we engage

  289. in sexual immorality

  290. for selfish gain,

  291. right?

  292. It is sexual action

  293. outside of God's

  294. covenantal structure

  295. of marriage

  296. where we end up

  297. actually using others

  298. to serve ourselves.

  299. And I just want to say this,

  300. even when it's consensual,

  301. it's still sinful

  302. when we do this

  303. to one another,

  304. when we engage

  305. in sexual activity

  306. in such a way

  307. that we dishonor

  308. God and His plans.

  309. We dishonor God's

  310. good plan

  311. for sex

  312. because He made it

  313. and it is good.

  314. And it's an expression

  315. of a human desire

  316. for intimacy.

  317. And in the right context,

  318. it should be celebrated.

  319. But in the wrong context,

  320. it has great destructive power.

  321. Now,

  322. here's the thing.

  323. We are rarely

  324. simply overcome

  325. with sexual temptation

  326. out of the blue.

  327. We live in a world

  328. where we are saturated

  329. with it.

  330. There is a ton

  331. of external stimuli,

  332. whether it be

  333. in our movies

  334. or in our music,

  335. whether it be

  336. on the internet

  337. and the images

  338. that we see.

  339. Our culture

  340. has an increasingly

  341. lack of modesty

  342. in our styles,

  343. in the way we live.

  344. And in fact,

  345. we exalt sexuality

  346. in all sorts

  347. of terrible ways.

  348. And there's even

  349. a appropriate,

  350. there's a lack of,

  351. growing lack of shame

  352. about this.

  353. In fact,

  354. these things are celebrated

  355. and it is unhealthily

  356. focused on.

  357. You can't be human

  358. if you're not active sexually.

  359. But we know

  360. it's not right

  361. because God's Word

  362. tells us to.

  363. So this is the battle

  364. against sin.

  365. So what do we do?

  366. The Bible commands us

  367. to flee it,

  368. to avoid it,

  369. to not indulge

  370. our lustful desires.

  371. Remember what I said

  372. last week.

  373. You can't keep

  374. the birds from flying

  375. over your head.

  376. You're going to have

  377. these moments of temptation.

  378. You're going to see

  379. these external stimuli

  380. or you're going to have

  381. these moments

  382. where your desires

  383. just well up in your heart.

  384. That's going to happen.

  385. But you can keep

  386. the birds from nesting

  387. in your hair.

  388. Right?

  389. When the external pull comes

  390. or the thought comes up,

  391. we need to fight the battle

  392. not to embrace

  393. or cherish

  394. or let that control us

  395. in the moment.

  396. but instead

  397. to walk in the Holy Spirit.

  398. Well, how do we do that?

  399. Some of this is

  400. walking in the Holy Spirit

  401. by preparing

  402. for those moments.

  403. Right?

  404. By preparing

  405. to know

  406. that we will face

  407. those times

  408. and to seek

  409. to fight the battle

  410. ahead of time.

  411. So that will be

  412. things like

  413. we want to avoid

  414. circumstances

  415. where we know

  416. we're going to be tempted.

  417. Right?

  418. If you're on a business trip

  419. and your colleagues

  420. are going out

  421. to a strip bar,

  422. it's probably not wise

  423. to go with them

  424. thinking,

  425. well, I'm a Christian.

  426. I can be strong

  427. and fight that temptation.

  428. Right?

  429. That's not smart.

  430. It's also not smart

  431. if you have struggled

  432. with this

  433. to have a computer

  434. that doesn't have

  435. an internet filter on it.

  436. It's not smart

  437. to hang out

  438. with your girlfriend

  439. late at night

  440. alone

  441. on a bed

  442. and think

  443. that you're going

  444. to avoid temptation.

  445. Right?

  446. So you want to do

  447. some wise thinking,

  448. spirit-empowered wisdom

  449. to avoid

  450. the circumstances

  451. where you may

  452. find yourself

  453. in temptation.

  454. The second thing is

  455. you're going to pray

  456. that God is going

  457. to give you the power

  458. like Joseph

  459. in the moment

  460. to at great cost

  461. to yourself

  462. flee from temptation,

  463. unplug your computer,

  464. run out of the room

  465. without only your robe on

  466. like Joseph did

  467. when Potiphar's wife

  468. sought to seduce.

  469. Do what it takes

  470. to flee temptation.

  471. Right?

  472. Because we need

  473. to do it

  474. at that level

  475. because when we

  476. give in to these things,

  477. when we live

  478. in them all the time,

  479. then we have

  480. no sense of freedom

  481. to begin to pursue

  482. the fruit of the Spirit.

  483. The fruit of the Spirit

  484. is choked out

  485. by our indulging

  486. the desires

  487. of the flesh.

  488. And so we need

  489. to do the right thing.

  490. But then we need

  491. to see

  492. a change of heart.

  493. We need to see

  494. that underneath

  495. our cultural desire

  496. for sexuality

  497. everywhere

  498. is a desire

  499. to be known

  500. and loved.

  501. It's a desire

  502. for intimacy.

  503. It's a desire

  504. for connection.

  505. And the Holy Spirit

  506. can work new patterns

  507. in our heart.

  508. And if we can give

  509. the space

  510. for Christ

  511. to invite us

  512. into intimacy

  513. with Him

  514. as we experience

  515. Him as the bride

  516. of Christ,

  517. the one who sings

  518. over us

  519. with His love

  520. because He delights

  521. in us,

  522. as we experience

  523. in healthy ways

  524. in Christian community

  525. intimacy with one another

  526. of friendship,

  527. of fellowship,

  528. of supporting

  529. one another,

  530. then this

  531. pull towards sex

  532. as the answer

  533. to those things

  534. becomes less

  535. as we are filled

  536. with godly patterns

  537. of intimacy

  538. in our lives.

  539. And the Holy Spirit

  540. will teach us

  541. that the love of God

  542. is better than sex.

  543. it will teach us

  544. that we can be

  545. delighted in

  546. and satisfied

  547. with

  548. God alone.

  549. And friends,

  550. you know in heaven

  551. there won't be

  552. any more sex.

  553. There's no more marriage

  554. because we're going

  555. to have a greater

  556. intimacy

  557. with Christ,

  558. with God

  559. than ever before.

  560. and knowing that

  561. and leaning into that

  562. independence

  563. on the Holy Spirit

  564. will help us fight

  565. those temptations

  566. in the moment.

  567. Here's a really practical.

  568. I knew a grad student

  569. once struggled

  570. with this.

  571. He had to work

  572. on computers all day.

  573. He struggled

  574. with internet pornography.

  575. He found that

  576. when he was working

  577. really hard

  578. for a couple hours

  579. then he needed

  580. to take a break.

  581. That was his moment

  582. of temptation.

  583. So do you know

  584. what he did?

  585. He took the Lord

  586. of the Rings

  587. with him to work

  588. and he put it

  589. next to his computer

  590. and when he stopped

  591. working he turned

  592. off his screen

  593. and he picked up

  594. this book

  595. because that book

  596. allowed him

  597. to remember

  598. the beauty

  599. and the glory

  600. of the gospel

  601. as it's expressed

  602. through this great

  603. fantasy story.

  604. Now you know

  605. I love Lord of the Rings.

  606. That's a great thing

  607. for me.

  608. It's probably not

  609. going to work

  610. for everybody

  611. but you see

  612. how he chose

  613. some practical

  614. example.

  615. He chose

  616. a very practical

  617. example

  618. of replacing

  619. something

  620. where temptation

  621. would be so easy

  622. to come in

  623. and control him

  624. he replaced it

  625. with something better.

  626. Right?

  627. The great Puritan

  628. Thomas Chalmers

  629. wrote this great essay

  630. you should all read it

  631. The Expulsive Power

  632. of a New Affection

  633. because here's the thing

  634. all the internet filters

  635. and all the accountability

  636. and all the

  637. fleeing the right places

  638. will not save you

  639. from sexual sin.

  640. it is the transformation

  641. of your heart

  642. that will wean

  643. your fleshly desires

  644. away from sin

  645. and towards

  646. something better.

  647. The way that you

  648. defeat your desire

  649. for intimacy

  650. through sex

  651. is by finding

  652. a greater intimacy

  653. in the love of Christ.

  654. This is walking

  655. in the power

  656. of the Spirit.

  657. The second example

  658. I want to talk about

  659. is anxiety

  660. because we live

  661. in an anxious world

  662. we live in an anxious

  663. generation

  664. right?

  665. And

  666. we live in this

  667. in all sorts of things

  668. and God says

  669. we are not to be anxious

  670. right?

  671. Philippians 4 says

  672. 6 through 7

  673. says

  674. do not be anxious

  675. about anything

  676. but in everything

  677. by prayer and supplication

  678. with thanksgiving

  679. let your request

  680. be made known

  681. to God

  682. and the peace

  683. of God

  684. that surpasses

  685. all understanding

  686. will guard your hearts

  687. and your minds

  688. in Christ Jesus.

  689. Now I want to be careful

  690. about this

  691. but anxiety here

  692. is not to be confused

  693. by care.

  694. We are meant

  695. to care about things

  696. we are meant

  697. to be responsible

  698. there are things

  699. that we love

  700. and we will think

  701. about them

  702. and we will care

  703. for them

  704. right?

  705. But anxiety

  706. is a response

  707. to circumstances

  708. that excludes

  709. God

  710. in the moment.

  711. We worry

  712. about

  713. our child

  714. who hasn't

  715. checked in

  716. and it's after curfew.

  717. We worry

  718. about

  719. our job

  720. and whether we are

  721. going to be able

  722. to keep it or not.

  723. We worry

  724. about

  725. how we are going

  726. to pay

  727. the next month's

  728. rent.

  729. We worry

  730. about these

  731. things because

  732. we feel

  733. out of control

  734. and we are

  735. fearful

  736. in the face

  737. of that uncertainty.

  738. And this is

  739. normal,

  740. right?

  741. We all say

  742. this is normal

  743. and it is

  744. normal

  745. but we need

  746. to recognize

  747. that our normal

  748. sometimes

  749. is actually

  750. sin.

  751. It's not good

  752. for us

  753. to be anxious

  754. and this anxiety

  755. when it controls

  756. us,

  757. when it shapes

  758. our action,

  759. it distracts us,

  760. it consumes us

  761. and it grips

  762. our heart.

  763. But God

  764. says

  765. by the power

  766. of the Holy Spirit

  767. you can walk

  768. not in worry,

  769. not in anxiety,

  770. but in faith

  771. in these circumstances.

  772. promises.

  773. Because the Holy Spirit

  774. can remind you

  775. in that moment

  776. that you are not

  777. alone in it

  778. and that God

  779. has not suddenly

  780. stepped off

  781. of His throne

  782. of sovereignty

  783. over the whole

  784. world,

  785. nor has He

  786. abandoned His

  787. goodness

  788. and His desire

  789. to bless you

  790. in His life.

  791. Right?

  792. Our sin

  793. is that we've

  794. forgotten God

  795. and we're cherishing

  796. and cherishing

  797. not in the sense

  798. of,

  799. oh,

  800. I love you.

  801. We pray to Him

  802. and say,

  803. God,

  804. we are out of control

  805. and we're fearful

  806. and we're afraid

  807. and we can't do anything.

  808. Please,

  809. Lord,

  810. be sovereign

  811. in this.

  812. And He steps in

  813. and He says,

  814. You are my child.

  815. I love you.

  816. I am with you.

  817. I am your heavenly Father.

  818. And sometimes

  819. that's a one-time prayer

  820. and we walk away

  821. and say,

  822. Okay,

  823. now I'm relaxed.

  824. Now I can do this.

  825. And sometimes

  826. it is an ongoing,

  827. constant prayer.

  828. God,

  829. don't let me be anxious.

  830. God,

  831. don't let me be controlled.

  832. God,

  833. You are sovereign

  834. and we almost have to do it

  835. moment by moment.

  836. We have to remind ourselves

  837. of the promises

  838. of God's Word

  839. that the peace of Christ

  840. will guard our hearts

  841. and minds.

  842. That in Matthew 6,

  843. that your heavenly Father

  844. knows what you need

  845. before you ask.

  846. Therefore,

  847. seek first His kingdom

  848. and His righteousness

  849. and all these things

  850. will be added unto you.

  851. God's Word

  852. applied by the Spirit

  853. to our hearts

  854. in that moment

  855. allows us

  856. to not give in

  857. to anxiety.

  858. His precious promises

  859. can help us.

  860. And friends,

  861. here's the thing.

  862. This isn't just

  863. the vagueness

  864. of God's sovereignty

  865. for us,

  866. but this is where

  867. the power of the gospel

  868. intersects with our fight

  869. against sin.

  870. Because where do we know

  871. that God really

  872. is in control

  873. and that He really loves us

  874. and that He really cares

  875. for us?

  876. He who did not

  877. spare His Son

  878. but gave Him up

  879. for us all.

  880. Will He not also

  881. give us

  882. with Him

  883. all good things?

  884. That's Romans 8.

  885. We look at the cross

  886. and as we sit

  887. at the foot of the cross

  888. in the midst

  889. of our anxiety

  890. we think,

  891. God,

  892. if You have dealt

  893. with my sin,

  894. You can deal

  895. with my lost child

  896. or my joblessness

  897. or whatever the crisis is

  898. that You are facing.

  899. the Holy Spirit

  900. is able

  901. to change

  902. your perspective.

  903. And so you may need

  904. to learn,

  905. again,

  906. the practices

  907. of walking in the Spirit

  908. may be

  909. recognizing your sin,

  910. confessing it,

  911. turning to God's Word,

  912. having these things available.

  913. Put this Word

  914. on your dashboard,

  915. on your mirror,

  916. on your Bible,

  917. on your kitchen,

  918. fridge,

  919. wherever you are.

  920. Put it on your screensaver,

  921. whatever it is.

  922. Let God's Word

  923. be the fuel

  924. that the Spirit of God

  925. can apply to our hearts

  926. as we fight this battle.

  927. It's not an easy battle

  928. to fight.

  929. And for many of us,

  930. it's an ongoing thing.

  931. And that's why the Bible

  932. tells us not to worry

  933. over and over again,

  934. because we like to worry

  935. over and over again.

  936. But God wants

  937. the fruit of the Spirit

  938. to include peace

  939. and faith.

  940. Finally,

  941. last example,

  942. having a judgmental

  943. or a critical spirit.

  944. This was something

  945. that was true of me

  946. when I was a college freshman.

  947. I had been a believer

  948. for a year.

  949. That summer,

  950. before I went to college,

  951. I finally woke up to,

  952. oh,

  953. that means I should

  954. live my life for Christ.

  955. And so,

  956. I got involved

  957. in a great Christian ministry

  958. called Princeton Christian Fellowship.

  959. I was young,

  960. I was zealous,

  961. and I thought

  962. I had lots of ideas.

  963. And I came in

  964. and I saw within days,

  965. weeks,

  966. maybe months,

  967. all the weaknesses

  968. of this ministry.

  969. Right?

  970. I was critical of it.

  971. I didn't think anyone

  972. was really committed

  973. to following Christ.

  974. So I created

  975. my own small groups

  976. because there weren't

  977. enough small groups

  978. for me to have fellowship.

  979. I did my own outreaches

  980. because no one

  981. was doing these outreaches.

  982. And I just thought

  983. they were a bunch

  984. of kind of lukewarm,

  985. half-committed Christians.

  986. I committed,

  987. I accused the staff

  988. in my heart

  989. of being controlling

  990. rather than serving.

  991. I thought the upperclassmen

  992. were worldly,

  993. caring too much

  994. about their studies.

  995. I thought I knew better

  996. and I was pretty proud.

  997. I was not patient.

  998. And though I thought

  999. I was doing this

  1000. to glorify God,

  1001. I was in fact

  1002. not depending on God

  1003. at all.

  1004. I didn't believe

  1005. God was at work.

  1006. I believed that God

1007. needed me to do things

  1008. that He wasn't doing.

1009. and I did not trust

  1010. that God cared

1011. as much as I did

  1012. about His glory

  1013. on this campus.

  1014. My critical spirit

  1015. excluded God

  1016. and elevated myself.

  1017. And the thing is

  1018. that I justified it.

  1019. I thought I was doing

  1020. the right thing.

1021. I was going to fix it.

1022. I was going to revive

  1023. this group.

1024. I was going to save

  1025. the campus.

  1026. And they were

  1027. exceedingly gracious

  1028. with me.

  1029. They were patient.

  1030. They were loving.

  1031. They confronted me

  1032. at times.

  1033. They bore with me

  1034. a lot.

  1035. And the Holy Spirit

  1036. convicted me.

  1037. I wasn't seeking this,

  1038. but God started

1039. to show me my sin.

  1040. He started to show

  1041. how proud I was.

1042. He started to show me

  1043. how critical I was.

1044. He started to show me

  1045. how I justified,

  1046. how my conviction

  1047. that I saw things

  1048. more clearly

  1049. than everyone else

  1050. was actually

  1051. in defiance

  1052. of Him.

  1053. And as I saw

  1054. this sin,

  1055. I realized

  1056. I needed help.

  1057. And I turned

  1058. to the Lord.

  1059. And I asked

  1060. Him

  1061. to teach me

  1062. humility.

  1063. It's a very

  1064. dangerous prayer.

  1065. by His grace,

  1066. He broke my pride.

  1067. With His kindness,

  1068. He humbled me.

  1069. He showed me

  1070. and reminded me

  1071. of the gospel

  1072. that I had believed,

  1073. that it wasn't

  1074. because of good things

  1075. that I had done

  1076. or because I brought

1077. so much to the table

1078. that He had saved me.

  1079. but despite my rebellion,

  1080. He saved me

  1081. by His grace.

  1082. He showed me

  1083. that I had a plank

  1084. in my eye

  1085. and it was like

  1086. a 10 by 10.

  1087. and He reminded me

  1088. that His love

  1089. for me

  1090. was in the midst

  1091. of that sin

  1092. and I was able

  1093. to see myself

  1094. in God's grace.

  1095. And the fruit

  1096. of humility

  1097. grew in me

  1098. a little bit.

  1099. Friends,

  1100. I'll tell you,

  1101. it still lurks

  1102. in my heart.

  1103. I still want

  1104. to be judgmental.

  1105. I still want

  1106. to think I'm right

  1107. all the time.

  1108. But by God's grace,

  1109. He saved me

  1110. from that trajectory

  1111. and from thinking

  1112. that was right.

  1113. So friends,

  1114. here are three pictures

  1115. of the Holy Spirit

  1116. at work.

  1117. Three portraits

  1118. of how walking

  1119. in the Spirit

  1120. looks in different ways.

  1121. The battle is real,

  1122. but it doesn't look

  1123. the same.

1124. And each one of you,

  1125. as well as me,

  1126. will have our own

  1127. particular shapes

  1128. of these battles.

  1129. Right?

  1130. But each of us

  1131. is called

  1132. to walk

  1133. in dependence

  1134. on the Holy Spirit,

  1135. knowing that

  1136. we don't have

  1137. any more

  1138. than our salvation

  1139. for our sanctification,

  1140. the power

  1141. to do

1142. what we most need done,

1143. which is for our hearts

  1144. to be changed

  1145. and transformed

  1146. by His Spirit.

  1147. So this is then

1148. leading me to my last point.

  1149. Again,

  1150. Tom Schreiner

  1151. says this,

  1152. the Galatians

  1153. are not called

  1154. upon

  1155. to work at

  1156. being more virtuous.

  1157. They are summoned

1158. to walk in the Spirit

  1159. and be led

  1160. by the Spirit.

  1161. Living in a way

  1162. that pleases God

  1163. is the fruit

  1164. of His miraculous work,

  1165. not the result

  1166. of self-effort,

  1167. though human beings

  1168. are called upon

1169. to walk in the Spirit

  1170. and yield

  1171. to the Spirit.

  1172. Right?

  1173. So where does

  1174. the power come from

  1175. to do this?

  1176. Here's the hard part

  1177. about this battle,

  1178. you all.

  1179. It's just like

  1180. in our salvation

  1181. in some ways.

  1182. We have to choose.

1183. We have to make decisions.

1184. We have to move forward.

  1185. We have to act.

  1186. And yet,

  1187. we recognize

  1188. that none of that

  1189. will actually bear

  1190. any good fruit

  1191. apart from

  1192. God's work

  1193. in us.

  1194. The power

  1195. is not

  1196. in ourselves.

  1197. It is in God

  1198. and what God

  1199. does for us.

  1200. This is why

  1201. we have

  1202. 2 Corinthians 12,

  1203. 9 and 10.

  1204. Paul had a thorn

  1205. in the flesh.

  1206. He asked that it

  1207. be taken away.

1208. God didn't take it away.

  1209. Paul said,

  1210. why haven't you

  1211. taken this away?

1212. So that I can be free

  1213. from this battle

1214. so I can go on

  1215. and do great things

  1216. for you,

  1217. following through

  1218. the great vision.

  1219. And this is what

  1220. the Lord said

  1221. to the Apostle Paul.

1222. But He said to me,

  1223. my grace

  1224. is sufficient for you

  1225. for my powers

  1226. made perfect

  1227. in weakness.

  1228. Therefore,

  1229. I will boast

  1230. all the more gladly

  1231. in my weaknesses

  1232. so that the power

  1233. of Christ

  1234. may rest on me.

  1235. For the sake

  1236. of Christ,

  1237. then,

  1238. I am content

  1239. with weakness,

  1240. insults,

  1241. hardships,

  1242. persecutions,

  1243. and calamity.

1244. For when I am weak,

  1245. then I am strong.

  1246. Friends,

  1247. the reason why

  1248. God designed

  1249. our sanctification

  1250. to be like this

  1251. is so that

  1252. we would continue

  1253. to learn the lesson

  1254. we should have learned

  1255. at our salvation,

  1256. which is that

  1257. we have nothing

  1258. and He has everything

  1259. and it is only

  1260. by His grace

  1261. that He saves us.

1262. It is only by His grace

  1263. that He sanctifies us.

1264. It is only by His grace

  1265. that He transforms us.

  1266. And He does this.

  1267. Why?

  1268. So that we wouldn't

  1269. boast in ourselves.

1270. This is the most ugly thing

  1271. about Christians,

  1272. isn't it,

  1273. at times?

  1274. When we say,

1275. look at what a great

  1276. Christian I am.

  1277. Look at me.

  1278. God designed

  1279. our sanctification

  1280. differently

  1281. so that when people

  1282. look at us,

  1283. they would say,

  1284. what an amazing Savior.

  1285. What an incredible God

  1286. that took that person

  1287. and changed them

1288. to be who they are now.

1289. That's why God did this.

1290. And that's why we walk

  1291. not by self-effort

  1292. but by faith.

  1293. Minute to minute

  1294. believing in

1295. the promises of God's Word.

  1296. Trusting in

1297. the finished work of Christ.

  1298. Believing in

  1299. God's empowering presence

  1300. now

  1301. and depending on it

  1302. and turning regularly,

  1303. daily,

  1304. moment by moment

  1305. to Him.

  1306. Saying,

  1307. God, I can't do this

  1308. but please help me.

  1309. Help me to do

  1310. the right thing

  1311. in the moment

  1312. and change my heart

1313. so that I will love

  1314. the right thing

  1315. more and more.

  1316. And friends,

  1317. we cry out

  1318. to a Savior

  1319. who knows us

  1320. because He has been

  1321. tempted in every way

  1322. just as we are

1323. and yet was without sin.

  1324. And when by faith

  1325. we believed in Him,

  1326. we have been crucified

  1327. with Him

  1328. and so we've crucified

  1329. the sinful nature

1330. and so it no longer

  1331. has controlling power

  1332. over us.

  1333. The Holy Spirit

  1334. reminds us

  1335. by bringing us back

1336. to the foot of the cross

1337. so that we can walk

  1338. in the power

  1339. that God gives us

1340. so that God can help me

  1341. this Friday night

  1342. when I'm looking

  1343. for a parking space.

  1344. to trust Him,

1345. to know that He's in control,

1346. to know that I live

  1347. in a fallen world

1348. and the van will probably

  1349. be parked there

  1350. again on Friday night,

  1351. but that God

  1352. will provide for me

1353. and He will care for me

1354. in the middle of it.

  1355. That I might display

1356. the fruit of the Spirit

  1357. in the midst

  1358. of that circumstance

  1359. and many others

1360. and may it be true

  1361. for you as well.

  1362. Let's pray together.

  1363. Lord Jesus,

  1364. we confess our need

  1365. to You this morning.

  1366. Lord,

  1367. I pray,

1368. I pray that You would teach us

  1369. how to live dependently,

  1370. trustingly,

  1371. faithfully,

  1372. increasing

  1373. in godliness

  1374. because of Your work

  1375. in changing our hearts.

  1376. O Lord,

  1377. be our help,

  1378. we pray.

  1379. In Jesus' name,

  1380. Amen.
