  1. Well, good morning, church, and happy Mother's Day. It's good to see you all this morning.

  2. Would you turn with me to Galatians chapter 6, verses 11 through 18. We've come to the end of our series in Galatians today.

    Galatians 6:11–18

  3. Galatians 6, verses 11 through 18. Let me pray for us as we come to God's Word.

    Galatians 6:11–18

  4. Father, what a thing to sing that all of our wealth is in the cross. Lord, the cross to our human eyes looks like weakness and defeat.

  5. Lord, so many things we'd love to hold up as our trophies of accomplishment and boast.

  6. And yet, truly, Your cross is where real wisdom and real power are found.

  7. So, as we come again to this mighty book of Galatians, as we come again to Your living Word,

  8. help us to see Christ in all of His beauty, the crucified and risen One.

  9. Lord, that we might behold Him, worship Him, become more like Him, and serve Him to the glory of Your name. Amen.

  10. All right, Galatians 6, 11 through 18. Paul writes this,

  11. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, even upon the Israel of God.

  12. From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

  13. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with Your spirit, brothers. Amen.

  14. All right, well, as Paul brings this letter to a close, he takes up the pen and starts writing with his own hand.

  15. In the first century, most letters were written by dictation. In other words, Paul would speak,

  16. and one of his associates would write it down, and that was the letter that they would send off.

  17. And often at the end of his letters, Paul would take up the pen from his scribe and write a final word.

  18. Often it was sort of a short word of blessing or a short word of greeting.

  19. But here in Galatians, this final writing from Paul is much fuller and much more emphatic.

  20. He says,

  21. Now, some have speculated that maybe Paul had really bad handwriting, or maybe he had bad eyesight,

  22. and that's why he had to write his letters so large.

  23. So, you know, if your penmanship isn't so good, well, perhaps you're in good apostolic company, you know.

  24. But I actually think the real reason Paul is writing with such large letters is because he really wants to drive these final words home.

  25. It's as if he's writing an email, and he kind of comes to the end, and he hits, you know, all caps and just starts typing away.

  26. Don't miss this. This is bold. This is underlined. This is all caps.

  27. See with what large letters I'm writing to you.

  28. And what does, what does Paul want ringing in our ears and in our minds as he draws this passionate letter of Galatians to a close?

  29. Well, no surprise.

  30. It's nothing less than the heart of the gospel itself.

  31. One more time, Paul wants to highlight the wonderful good news of what Jesus has done

  32. so that we might not be taken captive by a false gospel,

  33. by a false gospel that says circumcision or any other human work could possibly justify us before God.

  34. In fact, Paul ends by drawing a contrast,

  35. a contrast between legalism and the gospel,

  36. so that we might spot this deadly legalism before it takes us captive,

  37. and so that we might rejoice and rest in the peace and mercy and grace that only the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring.

  38. So I wonder, having listened to us teach Galatians for the last three, four, five months,

  39. can you tell the difference?

  40. Can you tell the difference when a message or a community or your own heart, perhaps,

  41. is operating out of one of these two radically different principles?

  42. Can you tell the difference when you're living out of legalism and works righteousness

  43. or when you're living out of the gospel?

  44. Well, Paul's going to help us one last time in these final verses.

  45. First, first thing he emphasizes is that there's a difference in what you boast in.

  46. There's a difference in what you boast in.

  47. A legalistic heart boasts only in the flesh,

  48. whereas a gospel-shaped heart boasts only in the cross of Jesus Christ.

  49. In verses 12 and 13, Paul highlights that the teachers who are troubling the Galatians only, what?

  50. Want to make a good showing in the flesh.

  51. That is, they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

  52. But by contrast, Paul says in verse 14,

  53. far be it for me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  54. You see, a legalistic heart is going to boast in what our human efforts can accomplish.

  55. That's what's going to excite it.

  56. That's what's going to energize it.

  57. And it's all going to be about our ego and our pride.

  58. Look at what I've done.

  59. Look at what I deserve.

  60. But the gospel-shaped heart stands not on a resume,

  61. not on a list of accomplishments,

  62. but it stands before the cross of Jesus Christ.

  63. And before the cross, we realize that our human efforts and our human good works

  64. can never be good enough to reconcile us to a holy God.

  65. After all, if the labors of our hands could reconcile us to God,

  66. if obedience to the law could justify us,

  67. then why did Christ have to die?

  68. Well, the answer that Paul's been saying again and again in this book is clear.

  69. He says, our works could never atone for our sins,

  70. and that's exactly why Jesus came and died in our place.

  71. At the cross, the wrath of God that stood over our sins was fully absorbed by Jesus,

  72. who took our sins upon Himself and paid our penalty of death in full.

  73. So the gospel doesn't say,

  74. God helps those who help themselves.

  75. The gospel says,

  76. God rescues the helpless by His grace alone.

  77. And that's why our boast is not in ourselves or in our righteousness.

  78. Our boast is in the cross of Jesus Christ,

  79. because at the cross, the battle was won,

  80. and the debt was paid.

  81. And at the cross, the final verdict was cast

  82. that declares sinners righteous.

  83. You know, imagine that you're out at sea,

  84. and a storm rises up,

  85. and your little ship's being battered by the waves,

  86. and the sun suddenly goes dark behind the clouds,

  87. and then your boat capsizes,

  88. and you're flung overboard,

  89. and you're floundering in the waves,

  90. trying to keep your head above water,

  91. but the current's pulling you down,

  92. and you know you're lost.

  93. But suddenly, you hear a helicopter overhead,

  94. and a diver plunges down into the water after you,

  95. ties a rope around your waist,

  96. pulls you above the water in the waves,

  97. secures your lift into the helicopter,

  98. and you're brought to safety.

  99. Now, when you get back to land,

  100. what will be your boast?

  101. Wow, I did a pretty good job back there.

  102. My backstroke practically saved my life, right?

  103. Of course not.

  104. Your boast isn't going to be in yourself.

  105. Your boast is going to be in your rescuer.

  106. Friends, that's the message of the Bible.

  107. That's the good news.

  108. The triune God has rescued us through the cross.

  109. We were dead in our sins,

  110. and God made us alive with Christ.

  111. So the cross, not ourselves,

  112. will always be our boast.

  113. That's why we talk so much about the cross at Trinity,

  114. because it is the center of everything.

  115. So we ask ourselves,

  116. is it your boast today?

  117. Or are you still trying to stand on your own righteousness

  118. and your own good works?

  119. Perhaps today is the day

  120. when you finally admit

  121. that before a holy and perfectly good God,

  122. you're actually like a person sinking in the waves.

  123. And with every stroke to save yourself,

  124. you sink simply deeper down.

  125. Friend, call upon Christ.

  126. He's descended into the waters

  127. of death and hell on the cross

  128. to save all who place their faith in Him.

  129. Everyone who calls upon Him will be saved.

  130. He died and rose again on the third day

  131. to atone for all your sins

  132. and to secure a perfect and complete salvation.

  133. And He'll lift you above the storm of sin and judgment

  134. and carry you to safety,

  135. to eternal life in His righteousness.

  136. And for those of us who are Christians,

  137. who have placed our faith in Christ,

  138. isn't it true that we sometimes slip back

  139. into that old form of boasting?

  140. Surely we do.

  141. Pride comes lurking in.

  142. Our old sinful nature wants to steal the glory

  143. that only Christ deserves.

  144. Ah, look at what I've done,

  145. our old self says.

  146. God sure is lucky to have a follower like me.

  147. Brothers and sisters,

  148. let us return to the foot of the cross.

  149. Let our pride be washed away again

  150. by the cleansing waters that flow

  151. from Calvary and the crucified one.

  152. Let's be freed from that self-centeredness

  153. and that selfishness,

  154. not so that we might think very little of ourselves,

  155. but that we might stop thinking about ourselves at all

  156. and focus on God

  157. and His great love for us

  158. and focus on serving and loving those around us.

  159. It was my sin that held Him there,

  160. we sing,

  161. until it was accomplished.

  162. His dying breath has brought me life.

  163. I know that it is finished.

  164. I will not boast in anything,

  165. no gifts,

  166. no power,

  167. no wisdom,

  168. but I will boast in Jesus Christ,

  169. His death and resurrection.

  170. So that's the first contrast

  171. that Paul wants to drive home in all caps,

  172. the big difference between the gospel and legalism

  173. is what we boast in.

  174. And the second contrast is this.

  175. Paul emphasizes the difference here

  176. between whose opinion matters most to us.

  177. Whose opinion matters most.

  178. You see, in the legalistic,

  179. works, righteousness, heart,

  180. it's human opinion that takes center stage.

  181. But in the gospel-shaped heart,

  182. only God's opinion finally matters.

  183. Again, in verse 12,

  184. Paul's opponents are

  185. those who want to make a good showing in the flesh.

  186. They want other people to notice and applaud.

  187. But listen to what Paul says in verse 14.

  188. He says,

  189. By the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  190. the world has been crucified to me

  191. and I to the world.

  192. What the world thinks,

  193. the world's opinion, Paul says,

  194. has lost all power over me.

  195. Let them applaud.

  196. Let them jeer and mock.

  197. It doesn't matter to me anymore.

  198. Only God's opinion matters now.

  199. After all, what does the cross show us?

  200. What does the cross show us?

  201. It shows us that the fallen world

  202. cannot possibly give us a reliable standard

  203. by which we live our lives.

  204. Why so?

  205. Because when the King of glory

  206. walked among us in the flesh,

  207. the embodiment of perfect wisdom

  208. and love and truth and righteousness,

  209. what did the world do?

  210. The world crucified Him.

  211. That was the world's opinion of Jesus.

  212. Here's the summit of the world's opinion.

  213. Perfect righteousness, truth, glory, love, and justice.

  214. Let's kill Him.

  215. Now, I don't know about you,

  216. but that doesn't seem like a very reliable system

  217. to base your life on, does it?

  218. Right?

  219. You see, when Christ was crucified,

  220. the fallen world was exposed as a sham.

  221. Its spell was broken.

  222. It comes to us in waves and says,

  223. think this way, act this way,

  224. believe this way, value this way,

  225. love this way,

  226. and then Christ was crucified.

  227. And the house of cards came down

  228. and we saw it for what it really was.

  229. No longer does the world's opinion

  230. of what is wise or beautiful or just or true

  231. hold any persuasive power

  232. when we stand before the cross.

  233. For there, before the crucified and risen Jesus,

  234. there is where we behold the fullness of wisdom

  235. and power and truth and love.

  236. And we live only on the basis of His opinion now.

  237. Can you imagine,

  238. can you imagine living a life

  239. that isn't blown and tossed

  240. by the approval or disapproval of the world?

  241. Can you imagine living a life

  242. that isn't thrown around

  243. by the latest fad of thinking,

  244. by the latest, you know,

  245. trend of popular opinion?

  246. Can you imagine being able to rise above the game

  247. of people-pleasing,

  248. of flattery,

  249. of favor-currying,

  250. and peer pressure?

  251. Can you imagine not having to ride

  252. the rollercoaster of elation

  253. when people like and approve of you

  254. or of devastation

  255. when you get disapproval and rejection?

  256. You know, trying to live your life

  257. on the opinion and approval of the world

  258. is like trying to build a house

  259. on a floating dock

  260. in the middle of a storm.

  261. Part of my growing up,

  262. I lived near a small lake

  263. in upstate New York

  264. and you could swim out

  265. to this little, like, floating dock

  266. that was big enough

  267. for maybe, like, four or five kids, right?

  268. And, of course,

  269. we'd always get that thing

  270. really rocking back and forth

  271. and then you'd fall off, you know.

  272. Imagine a little dock like that

  273. in the middle of a storm.

  274. Just rocks back and forth

  275. and back and forth

  276. and, you know,

  277. basing your life

  278. on the opinion of the world

  279. is like trying to build a little house

  280. on a dock like that.

  281. You think you build up a wall here,

  282. you think you secure a door there,

  283. the whole thing rocks again

  284. and it all falls down.

  285. How many of our lives are like that?

  286. But through the cross of Jesus Christ,

  287. you don't have to build your life

  288. on the fleeting opinions of the world.

  289. My hope is built

  290. on nothing less

  291. than Jesus' blood and righteousness.

  292. I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

  293. but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

  294. On Christ the solid rock I stand,

  295. all other ground is sinking sand.

  296. You see, by the cross of Jesus,

  297. Paul can say, you can say,

  298. the world's been crucified to me

  299. and I to the world.

  300. So, Christian,

  301. do the opinions of the world

  302. take up too much real estate

  303. in your heart?

  304. Are there certain aspects

  305. of following Jesus

  306. that you're afraid

  307. or embarrassed to maybe profess

  308. or believe

  309. because you're worried

  310. of how the world will respond,

  311. what your friends,

  312. your colleagues,

  313. your neighbors will think

  314. if you really followed Christ

  315. in this area of your life?

  316. Are you blown and tossed

  317. by the opinions of the world?

  318. Come, let us reason together,

  319. God once said

  320. through the prophet Isaiah.

  321. Though your sins be like scarlet,

  322. I will make them white as snow.

  323. Friend, consider all

  324. that the triune God has done

  325. to prove to you

  326. His love and faithfulness.

  327. The Father gave His only Son

  328. on the cross

  329. to grant you eternal life.

  330. He's demonstrated

  331. His love for you

  332. in a measure

  333. beyond human comprehension.

  334. And if that's how much

  335. God loves you,

  336. if that's the lengths

  337. God has gone to save you,

  338. then surely here is a God

  339. that you can trust.

  340. All His words are true.

  341. All His ways are good.

  342. His kingdom may run counter

  343. to the cultures of this world,

  344. but His kingdom

  345. is the only place

  346. of lasting and true flourishing.

  347. Surely, this God

  348. would only be giving you

  349. His words and His ways

  350. for your flourishing.

  351. When Christ died on the cross,

  352. God's love was displayed

  353. for you in undeniable glory.

  354. So now,

  355. how could the world

  356. hold anything

  357. that could charm us?

  358. I mean, think about it.

  359. Has the world ever loved you

  360. like Jesus loves you?

  361. I mean, I know how fun it is

  362. to flip through YouTube

  363. and see all those fun videos

  364. of like people telling me

  365. how I can be fit

  366. and happy and wise

  367. and wealthy

  368. and all these things, right?

  369. But no one has loved us

  370. like Christ.

  371. And only His ways are good.

  372. So why would we now look?

  373. Why would we now look

  374. to the world's opinions

  375. to tell us how money

  376. or sex

  377. or power

  378. should really be used?

  379. Why would we look

  380. to the world's opinions

  381. to determine

  382. whether we're living

  383. a full and robust life?

  384. Now, surely,

  385. every culture has echoes

  386. of God's common grace,

  387. and we're grateful

  388. for those echoes.

  389. God has not led Himself

  390. without a witness

  391. in any human culture.

  392. But we should not rest content

  393. merely with those echoes.

  394. Let us press on

  395. to the fountainhead.

  396. From God,

  397. the one from whom

  398. these streams of goodness

  399. and truth

  400. and beauty flow,

  401. let the opinions

  402. of Almighty God,

  403. the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  404. be the lens

  405. through which we can really know

  406. what is true

  407. and good

  408. and beautiful.

  409. Now, of course,

  410. living

  411. for the opinion of God

  412. rather than for the opinion

  413. of the world,

  414. it won't always be easy

  415. in this life.

  416. It may bring difficulty.

  417. It may even bring conflict.

  418. You see,

  419. Paul realized

  420. that the false teachers

  421. in Galatia

  422. were preaching circumcision

  423. so that they might not

  424. be persecuted

  425. for the cross of Christ.

  426. Now, what does that mean?

  427. Well,

  428. in context,

  429. you see,

  430. in the first century

  431. Roman Empire,

  432. Judaism was a religion

  433. that had legal status

  434. and legal protection

  435. because it was so ancient

  436. and so old.

  437. But many Christians

  438. were persecuted

  439. because Rome

  440. considered Christianity

  441. this sort of new

  442. and dangerous ideology.

  443. They didn't understand

  444. that Christianity

  445. was simply the fulfillment

  446. of the Old Testament.

  447. And given that context,

  448. it would have been

  449. very tempting

  450. for Gentile believers

  451. to want to come back

  452. under the Old Covenant

  453. and get circumcised

  454. because then

  455. they might not have

  456. to face persecution

  457. from the Roman authorities.

  458. So, a big draw

  459. of this false gospel

  460. in the first century

  461. was that it allowed you

  462. to kind of skirt out

  463. of persecution

  464. and ostracization

  465. and all this stuff.

  466. And friends,

  467. it is very much

  468. the same today.

  469. Most false gospels

  470. are shaped

  471. in part,

  472. consciously or unconsciously,

  473. to avoid

  474. tension and conflict

  475. with the world around us.

  476. But notice what Paul says

  477. in verse 17.

  478. From now on,

  479. let no one cause me trouble.

  480. That is,

  481. let no one question

  482. this truth

  483. that I am bringing to you.

  484. For I bear on my body

  485. the marks of Jesus.

  486. What are these marks

  487. of Jesus

  488. that Paul is talking about?

  489. Well, I think pretty obviously

  490. they were the scars

  491. that Paul had acquired

  492. through being persecuted

  493. because he proclaimed

  494. to all that he meant

  495. that the crucified Jesus

  496. was the world's true king.

  497. In 2 Corinthians,

  498. Paul recounts

  499. how he faced

  500. many physical beatings

  501. and hardships

  502. for the sake of the gospel.

  503. The false teachers

  504. wanted the Galatians

  505. to mark their bodies

  506. with circumcision

  507. so they could avoid persecution.

  508. But Paul says,

  509. don't you see?

  510. A willingness

  511. to suffer for Christ,

  512. those are some of the only

  513. true outward marks

  514. of the gospel.

  515. So, brothers and sisters,

  516. don't be afraid

  517. to face hardship

  518. or rejection

  519. for the name of Christ.

  520. Yes, we might be ostracized,

  521. we might be ridiculed

  522. for following Jesus as Lord,

  523. but you need not be afraid.

  524. If we suffer with Him,

  525. what does the Bible say?

  526. We will be raised with Him.

  527. What did Jesus Himself say?

  528. He said,

  529. blessed are you

  530. when others revile you

  531. and persecute

  532. and utter all kinds of evil

  533. against you falsely

  534. on my account.

  535. Rejoice and be glad,

  536. for your reward

  537. is great in heaven,

  538. for so they persecuted

  539. the prophets

  540. who were before you.

  541. Seek first His kingdom

  542. and His righteousness.

  543. God's opinion

  544. is the only opinion

  545. that matters.

  546. So, the first contrast

  547. is about what we boast in.

  548. Second contrast

  549. is about whose opinion

  550. matters most.

  551. Finally, the third contrast

  552. is about how real change happens.

  553. A legalistic heart

  554. tries to change

  555. from the outside in,

  556. but a gospel-shaped heart

  557. changes from the inside out.

  558. In verse 13,

  559. Paul points out,

  560. he says,

  561. even those who are circumcised

  562. do not themselves

  563. keep the law.

  564. You see,

  565. this was the great irony

  566. of the false teacher's position.

  567. They were saying,

  568. well, you have to get circumcised

  569. and keep the law

  570. to be saved.

  571. But in reality,

  572. even though they were circumcised,

  573. they couldn't keep the law,

  574. they couldn't keep the whole law.

  575. They were just like everybody else,

  576. stuck in the old patterns of life.

  577. Outward circumcision

  578. could never create

  579. an internal change.

  580. So, look at what Paul says

  581. in verse 15.

  582. He says,

  583. for neither circumcision

  584. counts for anything

  585. nor uncircumcision,

  586. but a new creation.

  587. What really counts

  588. isn't external markers,

  589. but internal regeneration.

  590. That's what it means, really,

  591. to be a Christian.

  592. Circumcision could never make you

  593. a redeemed child of God.

  594. And the same thing is true today.

  595. External symbols and signs

  596. don't make you

  597. a Christian,

  598. a child of God.

  599. We're going to celebrate

  600. baptism in just a minute,

  601. but baptism doesn't

  602. cause you

  603. to be a Christian.

  604. We celebrate the Lord's Supper

  605. every month.

  606. The Lord's Supper

  607. doesn't cause you

  608. to be a Christian.

  609. Rather,

  610. these things

  611. are beautiful,

  612. powerful,

  613. signs and seals

  614. of what God does

  615. through faith

  616. from the inside out.

  617. What matters

  618. is a new creation.

  619. Through the Holy Spirit,

  620. by faith in Christ,

  621. have you been made alive

  622. spiritually,

  623. internally?

  624. Has your old heart of stone

  625. been replaced

  626. with a heart of flesh?

  627. Have the eyes of your heart

  628. been opened to see

  629. the gravity of your sin

  630. before a holy God

  631. and the wonder

  632. of God's grace

  633. and forgiveness

  634. freely offered

  635. through Christ

  636. as your substitute

  637. and Savior?

  638. Have you been

  639. born again?

  640. That's what matters.

  641. Not whether you're Jew

  642. or Gentile

  643. or male or female,

  644. college-educated

  645. or self-educated.

  646. Have you been

  647. made a new creation?

  648. Have you been regenerated?

  649. Have you been born again?

  650. Did you know that

  651. nearly every major writer

  652. in the New Testament,

  653. Paul,

  654. John,

  655. Peter,

  656. James,

  657. they all describe

  658. genuine Christianity,

  659. real Christianity,

  660. what it means

  661. to be a Christian

  662. at all

  663. as being

  664. regenerated,

  665. born again,

  666. being a new creation

  667. in Christ.

  668. We sometimes think

  669. that born again

  670. is sort of this label

  671. for weird Christians,

  672. right?

  673. There's like the born again

  674. types over there

  675. than there's us

  676. serious types over here.

  677. The New Testament

  678. knows no such distinction.

  679. Every single writer

  680. practically in the New Testament

  681. says,

  682. real, genuine Christianity

  683. is being made new.

  684. In fact,

  685. this is how Jesus himself

  686. talks about

  687. what he came to do.

  688. He didn't come

  689. to give us more rules.

  690. He didn't come

  691. to give us more examples.

  692. He didn't come

  693. to give us more

  694. ethical principles.

  695. That's not ultimately

  696. why Jesus came.

  697. He came to give us

  698. new hearts.

  699. It's not circumcision

  700. that matters.

  701. It's not your uncircumcision

  702. that matters.

  703. It's a new creation.

  704. And that's where

  705. real change comes from.

  706. Not from outside in,

  707. but from inside out.

  708. Now, you see,

  709. it wasn't just

  710. in first century Galatia,

  711. but it has really been

  712. throughout much

  713. of Christian history

  714. that there have been

  715. those who have said,

  716. you know,

  717. if you really believe

  718. that salvation

  719. is by grace alone,

  720. through faith alone,

  721. in Christ alone,

  722. if you really believe that

  723. and preach that,

  724. then you know

  725. you're just giving people

  726. no incentive at all

  727. to obey God.

  728. If you preach

  729. that kind of message,

  730. people will just be content

  731. to stay in their

  732. old sinful patterns.

  733. That's how people

  734. will critique

  735. the biblical gospel.

  736. But what this critique

  737. misses,

  738. completely misses,

  739. is that adding

  740. more law

  741. or requiring

  742. more obedience

  743. to be saved

  744. or more requirements

  745. and rituals,

  746. that doesn't make us

  747. holy either.

  748. Only an internal

  749. change of heart

  750. can begin

  751. to bear the fruit

  752. of a holy life.

  753. And this internal

  754. change of heart

  755. doesn't come from us,

  756. from the outside.

  757. It comes as a gift

  758. from God

  759. to all who believe

  760. in Christ.

  761. Real change

  762. only happens

  763. when our loves

  764. begin to be reordered

  765. and reshaped

  766. by God's love

  767. from the inside out.

  768. Pastor Matt

  769. mentioned this writer

  770. a few weeks ago.

  771. A guy named

  772. Thomas Chalmers,

  773. who was a Scottish

  774. pastor many years ago,

  775. he wrote an essay

  776. called The Expulsive

  777. Power of a New

  778. Affection.

  779. Big words.

  780. Preachers in the,

  781. you know,

  782. 19th century,

  783. they liked long titles,

  784. you know.

  785. I should have called

  786. this sermon

  787. something cool like that,

  788. but I just call it

  789. some stuff about

  790. the end of Galatians.

  791. The Expulsive Power

  792. of a New Affection.

  793. What does he mean?

  794. He means that when

  795. you have a new affection,

  796. a new love,

  797. that's what has

  798. the expulsive power,

  799. the power to drive out

  800. the old loves.

  801. What makes a greedy

  802. person generous?

  803. What makes a fearful

  804. person confident?

  805. I mean, think about that.

  806. You can tell

  807. a fearful person

  808. stop being afraid

  809. a hundred times over,

  810. and it won't move

  811. their fear one inch.

  812. Right?

  813. But when the fearful

  814. heart catches a glimpse

  815. of Jesus Christ,

  816. the lover of their soul,

  817. standing sovereignly

  818. amidst the storms

  819. of their life,

  820. the one who calmed

  821. the storms and said,

  822. peace be still

  823. to the wind and the waves.

  824. You see,

  825. let the fearful soul

  826. feel the embrace of Christ

  827. in all His power and love.

  828. And then the words,

  829. don't be afraid,

  830. suddenly begin to melt

  831. the cold hands of fear,

  832. and the warm confidence

  833. of being a child of God

  834. begins to rise in the soul.

  835. Whom shall I fear?

  836. says the heart

  837. who sees the God

  838. of heavenly hosts,

  839. the one who commands

  840. the armies of heaven,

  841. that God,

  842. seeing that God

  843. bow low

  844. to take up

  845. our sinful flesh,

  846. bearing away

  847. our sins on the cross,

  848. rising again

  849. in victory

  850. over all the worst

  851. that hell and death

  852. could possibly

  853. throw against us?

  854. Indeed,

  855. whom shall we fear?

  856. That's the expulsive power

  857. of a new affection.

  858. Change comes

  859. not from outside in,

  860. but from inside out.

  861. So here are the contrasts

  862. that Paul puts in bold

  863. at the end of his great letter

  864. to the Galatians.

  865. We boast in the cross,

  866. not in our flesh.

  867. We live for God's opinion,

  868. not the world's.

  869. And we change

  870. from his power

  871. inside out,

  872. not from the outside in.

  873. And what's the result

  874. of all this?

  875. Well, interestingly,

  876. look at verse 16.

  877. And that's for all

  878. who walk by this rule,

  879. peace and mercy

  880. be upon them

  881. and upon the Israel of God.

  882. In fact,

  883. the way that last phrase

  884. should be translated

  885. is,

  886. even upon the Israel of God.

  887. Paul isn't distinguishing

  888. two groups here.

  889. He's saying,

  890. this is the real people of God.

  891. That's what Paul's saying.

  892. The people of God

  893. is no longer defined

  894. by circumcision

  895. or any external marker,

  896. but only by faith

  897. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  898. And in this community

  899. defined by faith,

  900. what is there?

  901. What reigns?

  902. Peace and mercy.

  903. You see,

  904. where the gospel reigns,

  905. there is peace

  906. and there is mercy.

  907. Peace because we no longer live

  908. under the condemning

  909. voice of the law,

  910. and mercy because

  911. we have been forgiven.

  912. And a community like that,

  913. a community,

  914. a church that lives

  915. in peace and mercy,

  916. will be a community

  917. that extends

  918. peace and mercy.

  919. Friends,

  920. being a people of the gospel

  921. means being a people of peace

  922. and not violence.

  923. Being a people of mercy

  924. and not hatred

  925. and bitterness.

  926. That's a place

  927. where the gospel reigns.

  928. And what makes that possible

  929. is what Paul's been talking about

  930. throughout this entire book.

  931. Grace.

  932. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

  933. be with your spirit,

  934. brothers and sisters.

  935. May our church

  936. be a church

  937. of grace.

  938. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  939. And then our Lord Jesus Christ

  940. will get all the praise

  941. that He deserves.

  942. Let's pray together.

  943. O Lord,

  944. as we come to the end

  945. of this book of Galatians,

  946. Lord,

  947. as it seems,

  948. like Luther said

  949. so many years ago,

  950. we've been just hammering

  951. the gospel into our heads

  952. week after week.

  953. O Lord,

  954. would it descend

  955. from our heads

  956. into our hearts,

  957. and would you give us

  958. a fresh taste

  959. by your spirit

  960. of how sweet

  961. and good

  962. and lovely

  963. is our Savior,

  964. Jesus Christ?

  965. Would we be a church

  966. that lives by His grace,

  967. that lives in peace

  968. and mercy,

  969. that boasts

  970. in the cross?

  971. Would we be a church

  972. where we say,

  973. oh,

  974. the world

  975. is crucified to us

  976. and us to the world?

  977. And out of that place,

  978. Lord,

  979. where we no longer need

  980. the opinions of the world,

  981. would we be equipped

  982. by Your Spirit

  983. to truly love

  984. this world

  985. that You have loved so much

  986. and to go forth

  987. to serve

  988. and to proclaim

  989. Jesus is Lord.

  990. We ask all this

  991. in Your mighty name,

  992. Jesus.

  993. Amen.
