  1. Good to see you all this morning. Happy Father's Day to all of you.

  2. Let me invite you to turn with me to Numbers chapter 16.

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  3. ! We are continuing through our summer sermon series in the book of Numbers,

  4. and today we're looking at all of chapter 16. That's page 116 or 117 in the Pew Bibles.

  5. And as we come to God's Word, let me begin with a word of prayer for us.

  6. Father, we do ask for your Spirit to come now and help us to not just understand your Word with our

  7. minds, but truly to have it shape our desires and our commitments, Lord, at a deeper heart level.

  8. Lord, we want to not just be hearers of your Word, but doers. And Lord, we know that this

  9. deep heart transformation comes only as you, by your Spirit, help us to see our Savior Christ,

  10. our Lord Jesus, more richly and more fully. So do just that as we come to this rich passage,

  11. this rich book of Numbers. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  12. All right, let me begin by reading the first 15 verses of Numbers chapter 16.

    Numbers 16 chapter mention

  13. Now, Korah, the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab,

  14. and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, Korah's rebellion. Now, at first, this seems to be just

  15. another story in Numbers about the people grumbling against the leadership of Moses. At this point in

  16. Numbers, you think, man, are they going to grumble about anything else, right? But, you know, when we

  17. take a closer look, we see that this rebellion, this chapter, it's really about something more vital.

  18. Well, chapter 16 and 17 and 18 of Numbers, which is really the center of this book, they take up the

  19. theme of the priesthood. And what was the priesthood all about? Well, the priesthood was all about how

  20. sinful people could draw near to a holy God.

  21. And so, the question that really runs throughout this passage at the deepest level is,

  22. can we approach God on our own terms? Or must we submit ourselves to approaching God on His terms?

  23. Well, let's take a closer look and see how that comes out in this passage. First, notice in verses 9 and 10

  24. what Korah is really after when he raises this complaint and raises this rebellion. What he's

  25. really after is the priesthood. Now, as a Levite, Korah had been assigned, along with the rest of his

  26. tribe, a very important role in the care and in the service of the tabernacle. The Levites, you'll

  27. remember, were set apart of all the other tribes to serve the Lord and to serve the people of God by

  28. keeping and tending the tabernacle. And Korah's clan, Korah's clan, which was the Kohathites, the

  29. children of Kohath, they were even responsible for moving the most holy things into the holy places of

  30. the tabernacle when it was set up. They had the unique role given from the Lord to intercede in this way

  31. for the people. But Korah wanted that role for himself. And we can speculate why. You know, perhaps

  32. Korah wanted the priesthood because he thought it would bring him more privilege or more power or more

  33. human praise, not just carrying the ark, but going in and being the one who offered the sacrifice before

  34. the ark. You know, too often people seek leadership for these reasons, for privilege, for power, for human

  35. praise. And the New Testament is very clear that we should watch out for so-called leaders like that.

  36. Beware, the New Testament will say again and again, beware the leader who wants to lead,

  37. but who doesn't want to serve. Leaders in the church, leaders in the people of God should be first and foremost

  38. willing servants, willing to set up the chairs and make the coffee if need be.

  39. Nothing at the end of the New Testament will actually name Korah by name as an example of what to beware of

  40. in the church. Beware the so-called leader that stirs up dissension and disunity. Beware the so-called

  41. leader that seems to listen intently to people's complaints only to manipulate it for his own gain.

  42. Jesus spoke a blessing upon whom? Upon the peacemakers.

  43. Paul writes that we should make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of

  44. peace. That's what a real leader looks like.

  45. But last, notice how Korah makes his case in verse 3. He says to Moses and Aaron, he says,

  46. you've gone too far, for all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them.

  47. Why then do you, Moses and Aaron, exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?

  48. Now, of course, there is a sense in which some of what Korah is saying is true.

  49. God had indeed chosen and set apart the people for himself. In that sense, the entire congregation

  50. was holy unto the Lord, and God had indeed been dwelling in their midst. The Lord was among them.

  51. In fact, at the end of chapter 15, right before this passage, that's exactly what the instructions

  52. about the tassels on the garments was all about. It was to remind the people to keep the commandments

  53. of God. It was to remind them to be set apart, to be holy, because the Lord was indeed in their midst.

  54. But here's a hallmark of a false teacher. They take something that's true,

  55. and they use it to justify something that's false.

  56. Korah's conclusion was that anyone should be able to be a priest because the congregation was holy,

  57. that anyone should be able to do what the priest can do. But that was wrong. Yes, God had set apart

  58. the whole people for himself. Yes, they were a holy nation and a royal priesthood, as Exodus 19.6 says.

  59. But that doesn't mean that they could then approach God on their own terms.

  60. God had appointed very specific means whereby they could draw near. And under the old covenant,

  61. he had chosen one particular family for that particular role and no one else.

  62. And this brings us to the real heart of the passage. Yes, Korah is an example of a so-called

  63. leader to watch out for and to avoid, but the real question that Korah raises is,

  64. can we approach God on our own terms?

  65. You see, the heart of Korah's rebellion is just that, a desire to want to draw near to God

  66. in the way that Korah himself chooses, apart from God's appointed means.

  67. And friends, that is the very heart of human rebellion against God,

  68. that I get to choose how and on what basis I get to God. I mean, surely, right, if I'm sincere

  69. and I'm basically moral, that's enough, right? Why can't I draw near to God through my own version

  70. of spirituality? Whatever I happen to think is best. I mean, who's to say which religion is true,

  71. right? I mean, aren't they all just kind of paths leading up the same mountain?

  72. Aren't we all just blindfolded men and women grabbing a different part of the elephant?

  73. You've got your way, I've got mine. God will just accept them all, right?

  74. So goes, I think, our very common line of thinking.

  75. But can we, can we actually draw near to God on our own terms?

  76. You see, the problem with this line of thinking

  77. is that it fails to account for God's holiness.

  78. It fails to account for God's holiness.

  79. Because God is not some inert goal at the top of a mountain

  80. that we can just bushwhack our way to the top.

  81. And God is certainly not a kind of benign elephant

  82. that we can blindly grasp and grope like a baby Dumbo.

  83. God is holy.

  84. God is infinite in majesty, in power, in purity, in love.

  85. The chapter from Revelation that Nick read for us earlier is all about this.

  86. What do we see there in Revelation 4?

  87. We see that God is not some kind of cosmic, doting grandparent,

  88. but God is the Holy One

  89. before whom all creation will and must worship.

  90. An unmediated glimpse of the Holy and Majestic God,

  91. an unmediated glimpse of that God would not be bliss,

  92. but our utter undoing.

  93. Like a tiny ship pushed by a growing wave

  94. into rocky cliffs thousands of feet high,

  95. dashed into oblivion,

  96. one glimpse of God's real unmediated glory

  97. would utterly wreck us.

  98. We cannot come to God on our own terms

  99. because of who God is.

  100. And that's exactly what we see

  101. in the next part of this passage.

  102. Let's pick up in verse 16,

  103. and we'll read all the way through verse 40

  104. and see what happens to Korah's rebellion.

  105. Moses said to Korah,

  106. Be present, you and all your company,

  107. before the Lord, you and they and Aaron tomorrow,

  108. and let every one of you take his censer

  109. and put incense on it,

  110. which was a priestly task, by the way.

  111. God is basically saying,

  112. Okay, Korah, put yourself in the place of a priest.

  113. Let every one of you take his censer

  114. and put incense on it,

  115. and every one of you bring before the Lord his censer.

  116. 250 censers, you also, and Aaron, each a censer.

  117. So every man took his censer

  118. and put fire in them and laid incense on them,

  119. stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting

  120. with Moses and Aaron.

  121. Then Korah assembled all the congregation against them

  122. at the entrance of the tent of meeting,

  123. and the glory of the Lord appeared

  124. to all the congregation.

  125. And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron,

  126. saying, Separate yourselves from this congregation

  127. that I may consume them in a moment.

  128. And they fell on their faces and said,

  129. Oh God, the God of the spirits of all flesh

  130. shall one man sin,

  131. and you will be angry with all the congregation?

  132. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

  133. Say to the congregation,

  134. Get away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

  135. Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram,

  136. and the elders of Israel followed him.

  137. And he spoke to the congregation, saying,

  138. Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men,

  139. and touch nothing of theirs,

  140. lest you be swept away with all their sins.

  141. So they got away from the dwelling of Korah,

  142. Dathan, and Abiram.

  143. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood

  144. at the door of their tents,

  145. together with their wives, their sons,

  146. and their little ones.

  147. And Moses said,

  148. Hereby you shall know that the Lord has sent me

  149. to do all these works,

  150. and that it has not been of my own accord.

  151. If these men die as all men die,

  152. or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind,

  153. then the Lord has not sent me.

  154. But if the Lord creates something new,

  155. and the ground opens its mouth

  156. and swallows them with all that belongs to them,

  157. and they go down alive into Sheol,

  158. then you shall know that these men

  159. have despised the Lord.

  160. And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words,

  161. the ground under them split apart,

  162. and the earth opened its mouth

  163. and swallowed them with their households

  164. and all the people who belonged to Korah

  165. and all their goods.

  166. So they and all that belonged to them

  167. went down alive into Sheol,

  168. and the earth closed over them,

  169. and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

  170. And all Israel who were around them

  171. fled at their cry,

  172. for they said,

  173. Lest the earth swallow us up.

  174. And fire came out from the Lord

  175. and consumed the 250 men offering the incense.

  176. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

  177. Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest,

  178. to take up the censers out of the blaze.

  179. Then scatter the fire far and wide,

  180. for they have become holy.

  181. As for the censers of these men

  182. who have sinned at the cost of their lives,

  183. let them be made into hammered plates

  184. as a covering for the altar,

  185. for they offered them before the Lord,

  186. and they became holy.

  187. Thus they shall be a sign

  188. to the people of Israel.

  189. So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers,

  190. which those who were burned had offered,

  191. and they were hammered out

  192. as a covering for the altar

  193. to be a reminder

  194. to the people of Israel,

  195. so that no outsider

  196. who is not of the descendants of Aaron

  197. should draw near

  198. to burn incense before the Lord,

  199. lest he become like Korah

  200. and his company,

  201. as the Lord said to him

  202. through Moses.

  203. So Korah wanted to come to God

  204. on his own terms.

  205. Dathan and Abiram joined Korah

  206. in his rebellion,

  207. and as a result,

  208. they all crashed against the rocks

  209. of God's holiness.

  210. Korah and the rest

  211. who take censers

  212. before the Lord at the tabernacle,

  213. you would sort of put fire

  214. inside a plate

  215. and you would swing it

  216. so the incense would go up.

  217. Korah and all the rest

  218. who did so

  219. before the Lord at the tabernacle

  220. were consumed by fire.

  221. And the tragedy

  222. is that the sin of Korah

  223. and Dathan and Abiram

  224. doesn't just impact themselves,

  225. but their families as well.

  226. At first,

  227. we sort of recoil

  228. at passages like this,

  229. don't we?

  230. At first,

  231. it seems unjust

  232. for family members

  233. to suffer the same fate

  234. as the heads of the households

  235. who did the rebellion,

  236. who did the rebelling.

  237. But that's the tragedy

  238. of sin, friends.

  239. It impacts all those around us.

  240. Especially the presumptuous sin

  241. of thinking

  242. that we can handle God

  243. on our own terms

  244. in any way that we see fit.

  245. That rebellion

  246. will impact our children.

  247. And that's why people

  248. were commanded to flee

  249. from the tents

  250. of Dathan and Abiram.

  251. And even Korah's tent,

  252. even though Korah himself

  253. was at the tabernacle

  254. with the 250,

  255. God in mercy warned them

  256. that this sin

  257. was going to impact

  258. all those around it.

  259. But you see,

  260. that spreading impact

  261. of sin,

  262. the truth is,

  263. that's exactly how sin

  264. has worked

  265. from the very beginning.

  266. All the way back

  267. to our first parents,

  268. when our first parents sinned,

  269. we all fell

  270. under its deadly sway.

  271. Consider the original sin

  272. of Adam.

  273. Rather than listen

  274. to God and obey,

  275. Adam chose his own terms.

  276. He took the fruit

  277. God had commanded him

  278. not to take,

  279. thinking that in doing so,

  280. he could just become

  281. like God

  282. rather than approach

  283. God on God's terms.

  284. Adam thought

  285. he could do it

  286. his own way.

  287. And that rebellion

  288. brought spiritual death,

  289. not just to Adam and Eve,

  290. but to all humanity.

  291. You see,

  292. friends,

  293. every single human being

  294. is created

  295. in God's own image.

  296. Each one of us

  297. is full

  298. of inestimable

  299. dignity

  300. and value

  301. and worth.

  302. And

  303. every human being

  304. has inherited

  305. a guilty status

  306. before God

  307. and a corrupt nature

  308. within ourselves.

  309. Like a computer virus

  310. that spreads

  311. to every computer

  312. in the network,

  313. there is no human

  314. who is exempt

  315. from the effects

  316. of Adam's sin.

  317. And that means

  318. there is no

  319. approaching God

  320. and His holiness

  321. without it resulting

  322. in utter ruin.

  323. The 250 men

  324. who swung their censers

  325. that day

  326. before the tabernacle

  327. were consumed

  328. in an instant.

  329. God

  330. is not

  331. to be trifled with.

  332. How could we think

  333. that we could just

  334. saunter

  335. into God's presence?

  336. That we could just

  337. approach God

  338. and be accepted

  339. by God

  340. on our own terms,

  341. on our own way?

  342. I mean,

  343. think about it.

  344. We would never

  345. think about

  346. entering our

  347. neighbor's house

  348. without their

  349. permission

  350. and on their

  351. own terms,

  352. right?

  353. Of course,

  354. you wouldn't just

  355. like show up

  356. at your neighbor's

  357. house,

  358. open the door

  359. and take off

  360. your shoes

  361. and start eating

  362. the food

  363. out of their fridge.

  364. I mean,

  365. maybe you would.

  366. Maybe you have

  367. a really good

  368. relationship

  369. with your neighbor.

  370. I don't know.

  371. But no,

  372. you do it

  373. on your neighbor's

  374. terms,

  375. right?

  376. That's how

  377. you draw near

  378. to them.

  379. But think about

  380. something even greater.

  381. What about

  382. the mayor's office?

  383. What if we were

  384. to walk,

  385. you know,

  386. a few blocks

  387. down to the green

  388. and go into

  389. the city hall

  390. and go into

  391. the city hall?

  392. We just kind of

  393. barge into

  394. Mayor Eelker's

  395. office,

  396. put our feet

  397. up on his desk.

  398. What would

  399. happen?

  400. Well,

  401. you would most

  402. likely be

  403. escorted out

  404. by security,

  405. right?

  406. You can't

  407. approach the

  408. human mayor

  409. on your own

  410. terms.

  411. And what

  412. about the

  413. White House?

  414. Try to get

  415. into the

  416. White House

  417. on your own

  418. terms and you

  419. will certainly

  420. be arrested

  421. or worse.

  422. Friends,

  423. if that is

  424. true of our

  425. relationship

  426. with mere

  427. humans,

  428. what makes

  429. us think

  430. that we

  431. could approach

  432. God on

  433. our own

  434. terms,

  435. in our

  436. own way?

  437. God,

  438. the consuming

  439. fire himself

  440. who is

  441. infinitely good,

  442. infinitely pure,

  443. perfectly just.

  444. And so God

  445. tells Aaron's

  446. son,

  447. Eleazar,

  448. to take all

  449. those burned

  450. censors of

  451. Korah's

  452. rebellion,

  453. to hammer

  454. them into

  455. plates,

  456. and to

  457. plate them

  458. onto the

  459. altar as

  460. a covering

  461. so that when

  462. the people

  463. came to

  464. the tabernacle

  465. to worship,

  466. they would

  467. see the

  468. covering and

  469. every time

  470. they would

  471. be reminded

  472. that they

  473. had to

  474. come to

  475. God on

  476. God's

  477. own terms

  478. or not

  479. at all.

  480. Friend,

  481. how are you

  482. hoping to

  483. approach

  484. God,

  485. to get

  486. near to

  487. God

  488. today?

  489. I mean,

  490. after all,

  491. nearness to

  492. God,

  493. communion with

  494. God,

  495. fellowship with

  496. God,

  497. that is the

  498. very thing

  499. that we

  500. humans were

  501. created for.

  502. We weren't

  503. created to

  504. find our

  505. meaning,

  506. our purpose,

  507. our hope,

  508. merely in the

  509. created things

  510. of this life.

  511. Do you want

  512. evidence that we

  513. weren't created

  514. to find our

  515. meaning and hope

  516. and purpose in

  517. the things of

  518. this life?

  519. Then talk to

  520. someone who

  521. has it all.

  522. Talk to the

  523. wealthiest people,

  524. talk to the

  525. most famous

  526. people,

  527. talk to the

  528. most powerful

  529. people,

  530. and what do

  531. you find?

  532. Do you find

  533. that all those

  534. things have

  535. brought them

  536. contentment,

  537. joy,

  538. peace,

  539. awe?

  540. No.

  541. More often

  542. than not,

  543. they will all

  544. tell you the

  545. same thing.

  546. It didn't

  547. actually make

  548. them happy.

  549. This is why

  550. songwriting is

  551. such a good

  552. gig,

  553. because you

  554. write songs,

  555. you get really

  556. famous,

  557. it doesn't

  558. actually satisfy,

  559. so then you

  560. can just write

  561. more songs about

  562. being dissatisfied

  563. and make more

  564. money.

  565. It's a brilliant

  566. scheme,

  567. right?

  568. And yet it is

  569. evidence that

  570. this world is

  571. not what we

  572. were created to

  573. find our deepest

  574. meaning and

  575. identity in.

  576. That deep

  577. hole,

  578. that deep

  579. hunger still

  580. remains.

  581. there's only

  582. one thing

  583. that can

  584. satisfy the

  585. human heart,

  586. and we've

  587. read about it

  588. in Revelation

  589. 4,

  590. the glory of

  591. God,

  592. our Creator,

  593. only in

  594. communion with

  595. the triune

  596. God,

  597. the triune

  598. God whom all

  599. creation praises

  600. ceaselessly,

  601. day and night,

  602. only in communion

  603. with God,

  604. will we find

  605. the true

  606. meaning of

  607. our existence.

  608. And only in

  609. communion with

  610. the triune

  611. God revealed

  612. in Jesus

  613. Christ,

  614. will we be

  615. able to

  616. actually enjoy

  617. the things of

  618. this life?

  619. Because otherwise

  620. we just try to

  621. use the things

  622. of this life to

  623. fill the God-sized

  624. hole in our

  625. hearts and it

  626. doesn't work.

  627. It doesn't

  628. Here's the truth,

  629. friends.

  630. you and I

  631. need to

  632. approach God.

  633. We have to

  634. draw near to

  635. God,

  636. but we can't

  637. do it on our

  638. own terms.

  639. Our sin is

  640. too great,

  641. and the holiness

  642. of God is

  643. infinitely greater

  644. still.

  645. So what's

  646. the solution?

  647. How can we

  648. actually draw near?

  649. What's the

  650. answer to our

  651. dilemma?

  652. Well, it's

  653. this,

  654. that God has

  655. appointed a

  656. way.

  657. God has set

  658. His own

  659. terms.

  660. In His

  661. grace,

  662. God has

  663. opened a

  664. road whereby

  665. sinful humans

  666. can come to

  667. Him and

  668. not be

  669. consumed.

  670. But there's

  671. no other

  672. road.

  673. only one

  674. leads out

  675. from Him

  676. and only

  677. one leads

  678. back to

  679. Him.

  680. And that

  681. road was

  682. signified

  683. under the

  684. Mosaic

  685. covenant

  686. that one

  687. appointed way

  688. to God

  689. was signified

  690. under the

  691. Mosaic

  692. covenant

  693. by the

  694. priesthood

  695. of Aaron.

  696. Aaron and

  697. his

  698. sons

  699. would be

  700. the means

  701. whereby

  702. the Old

  703. Testament

  704. people could

  705. have

  706. fellowship

  707. with God

  708. without being

  709. consumed by

  710. God's

  711. holiness.

  712. Through the

  713. priesthood's

  714. intercession,

  715. God would

  716. make atonement

  717. for His

  718. people so

  719. that sinful

  720. people could

  721. dwell with

  722. a holy

  723. God.

  724. Let's read

  725. the rest of

  726. the chapter,

  727. verses 41

  728. through 50.

  729. But on the

  730. next day,

  731. all the

  732. congregation of

  733. the people of

  734. Israel grumbled

  735. against Moses

  736. and against

  737. Aaron,

  738. saying,

  739. You have

  740. killed the

  741. people of

  742. the Lord.

  743. And when the

  744. congregation had

  745. assembled against

  746. Moses and

  747. against Aaron,

  748. they turned

  749. toward the

  750. tent of

  751. meeting,

  752. and behold,

  753. the cloud

  754. covered it,

  755. and the glory

  756. of the Lord

  757. appeared.

  758. And Moses

  759. and Aaron

  760. came to the

  761. front of the

  762. tent of meeting,

  763. and the Lord

  764. spoke to Moses,

  765. saying,

  766. Get away from

  767. the midst of

  768. this congregation

  769. that I may

  770. consume them

  771. in a moment.

  772. And they fell

  773. on their faces,

  774. and Moses said

  775. to Aaron,

  776. Take your

  777. censer and

  778. put fire on

  779. it from off

  780. the altar and

  781. lay incense on

  782. it and carry it

  783. quickly to the

  784. congregation and

  785. make atonement

  786. for them, for

  787. wrath has gone

  788. out from the

  789. Lord.

  790. The plague has

  791. begun.

  792. So Aaron

  793. took it,

  794. as Moses said,

  795. and ran into

  796. the midst of

  797. the assembly,

  798. and behold,

  799. the plague had

  800. already begun

  801. among the

  802. people,

  803. and he put

  804. on the

  805. incense and

  806. made atonement

  807. for the

  808. people,

  809. and he stood

  810. between the

  811. dead and

  812. the living,

  813. and the

  814. plague was

  815. stopped.

  816. Now those

  817. who died in

  818. the plague

  819. were fourteen

  820. thousand,

  821. besides those

  822. who died in

  823. the affair of

  824. Korah.

  825. And Aaron

  826. returned to

  827. Moses at the

  828. entrance of the

  829. tent of meeting

  830. when the plague

  831. was stopped.

  832. So you see,

  833. when Korah,

  834. when Korah and

  835. his company of

  836. 250 chiefs of

  837. the congregation,

  838. important,

  839. powerful,

  840. prestigious men,

  841. when they took

  842. their censers and

  843. burned incense

  844. before God,

  845. they were

  846. consumed.

  847. But when Aaron,

  848. just Aaron,

  849. by himself,

  850. takes a censer,

  851. and when he

  852. stands between

  853. the dead and

  854. the living and

  855. makes intercession,

  856. the plague is

  857. stopped.

  858. the just

  859. wrath of God

  860. is turned away

  861. from the sinful

  862. people,

  863. and they're

  864. saved.

  865. Notice how

  866. this episode

  867. starts.

  868. Now the whole

  869. congregation is

  870. grumbling against

  871. them, and God

  872. again gives

  873. what is true.

  874. He says,

  875. get away from

  876. the midst of

  877. this congregation

  878. that I may

  879. consume them

  880. in a moment.

  881. You see,

  882. that's how

  883. sinful sin is.

  884. It deserves

  885. God's wrath.

  886. But Aaron,

  887. fulfilling the

  888. priestly office

  889. that God had

  890. assigned to

  891. him,

  892. stands in the

  893. midst of the

  894. people and

  895. offers up

  896. intercession on

  897. their behalf.

  898. And God,

  899. in His grace,

  900. receives Aaron's

  901. intercession.

  902. God turns aside

  903. His wrath.

  904. He withholds

  905. His full

  906. judgment.

  907. But friends,

  908. you see,

  909. Aaron in the

  910. Old Covenant,

  911. Aaron was just

  912. a picture of

  913. the greater

  914. priest to come.

  915. As the New

  916. Testament opens

  917. and as the

  918. story unfolds

  919. and as we see

  920. the ministry

  921. and the deeds

  922. and the work

  923. of the Lord

  924. Jesus Christ,

  925. we see that

  926. He was the

  927. true and the

  928. better priest.

  929. He was the

  930. priest that Aaron

  931. and his sons

  932. were just

  933. gesturing towards,

  934. just pointing

  935. towards as a

  936. sign.

  937. You see,

  938. Jesus did

  939. stand in the

  940. midst of His

  941. sinful people

  942. and He

  943. identified with

  944. them fully.

  945. And He didn't

  946. merely offer up

  947. incense and

  948. prayers,

  949. but He offered

  950. up His own

  951. body on the

  952. cross.

  953. And when Jesus,

  954. our true priest,

  955. stood in the

  956. midst of His

  957. people,

  958. on that day,

  959. the wrath of

  960. God didn't

  961. turn aside.

  962. No, at the

  963. cross, the

  964. holiness of

  965. God was in

  966. full display

  967. as Jesus

  968. bore the

  969. full weight

  970. of the divine

  971. wrath our

  972. sins deserved.

  973. But His

  974. sin,

  975. death-bearing

  976. death,

  977. this was

  978. the very

  979. plan of

  980. God.

  981. For in

  982. Jesus,

  983. we see

  984. the terms,

  985. God's terms,

  986. whereby sinful

  987. humans can now

  988. come near.

  989. Through faith

  990. in Jesus

  991. crucified and

  992. risen,

  993. sinners can

  994. draw near to

  995. God because

  996. Jesus Christ

  997. has turned

  998. aside God's

  999. holy wrath

  1000. through His

  1001. self-giving

  1002. death on the

  1003. cross in our

  1004. place.

  1005. And what's

  1006. more, on the

  1007. third day,

  1008. this true and

  1009. better high

  1010. priest rose

  1011. from the

  1012. dead,

  1013. and forty

  1014. days later,

  1015. He ascended

  1016. to the

  1017. Father's

  1018. right hand,

  1019. where He

  1020. now intercedes

  1021. forever for

  1022. those who

  1023. trust in

  1024. Him.

  1025. You see,

  1026. unlike Aaron

  1027. and all of

  1028. Aaron's sons

  1029. down through

  1030. the Old

  1031. Testament age,

  1032. unlike Aaron

  1033. who eventually

  1034. died,

  1035. Jesus,

  1036. our true and

  1037. better high

  1038. priest,

  1039. always lives.

  1040. And that

  1041. means He

  1042. always lives

  1043. to make

  1044. intercession

  1045. for us.

  1046. What He

  1047. did for us

  1048. will always

  1049. be effective

  1050. before the

  1051. throne of

  1052. our holy

  1053. God.

  1054. So for

  1055. those who

  1056. approach God

  1057. apart from

  1058. Jesus,

  1059. there is

  1060. nothing but a

  1061. fearful expectation

  1062. of judgment.

  1063. But for those

  1064. who approach

  1065. God through

  1066. Jesus,

  1067. there is

  1068. actually

  1069. confidence and

  1070. boldness to

  1071. approach God

  1072. because Jesus

  1073. has covered

  1074. our sins

  1075. and welcomed

  1076. us in His

  1077. name.

  1078. And you see,

  1079. that means if

  1080. you're not a

  1081. Christian,

  1082. if you're here

  1083. this morning and

  1084. you're spiritually

  1085. searching and

  1086. trying to figure

  1087. out what it

1088. means to be in a

  1089. relationship with

  1090. God, then the

  1091. message of

  1092. number 16 to

  1093. you is this.

  1094. Repent of

  1095. trying to

  1096. approach God

  1097. on your own

  1098. terms.

  1099. Admit it and

  1100. turn away from

  1101. it.

  1102. Repent of

  1103. trying to

  1104. approach God

  1105. on your own

  1106. terms, in

  1107. your own

  1108. way, and

  1109. accept the

  1110. one and

  1111. only sure

  1112. way to

  1113. draw near

  1114. to God

  1115. through what

  1116. God Himself

  1117. has appointed

  1118. through the

  1119. true and

  1120. better high

  1121. priest, the

  1122. Lord Jesus

  1123. Christ.

  1124. call upon

  1125. Him and

  1126. entrust

  1127. yourself to

  1128. Him and

  1129. know that

  1130. without a

  1131. doubt in

  1132. Him your

  1133. sins will

  1134. be forgiven.

  1135. And because

  1136. He lives to

  1137. always intercede

  1138. for you, you

  1139. will have

  1140. eternal favor

  1141. and fellowship

  1142. with God your

  1143. Creator, and

  1144. God will be

  1145. your joy and

  1146. your utmost

  1147. satisfaction,

  1148. because there's

  1149. one who stands

  1150. for you at the

  1151. right hand of

  1152. God.

  1153. And for those

  1154. of us who

  1155. are trusting

  1156. in Christ,

  1157. then the

  1158. application of

  1159. number 16

  1160. is this,

  1161. remember,

  1162. remember that

  1163. our true

  1164. priest has

  1165. come and

  1166. that He

  1167. always lives

  1168. to make

  1169. intercession

  1170. for us and

  1171. that now we

  1172. can draw near

  1173. with confidence

  1174. to God.

  1175. Ephesians 3,

  1176. 11 through

  1177. 12 says that

  1178. God has

  1179. saved us

  1180. according to

  1181. the eternal

  1182. purpose that

  1183. He has

  1184. realized in

  1185. Christ Jesus

  1186. our Lord,

  1187. in whom,

  1188. in Jesus,

  1189. we now have

  1190. boldness and

  1191. access with

  1192. confidence through

  1193. our faith in

  1194. Him.

  1195. Do you see

  1196. what the work

  1197. of Jesus

  1198. Christ has

  1199. wrought?

  1200. Now we can

  1201. draw near to

  1202. God, though we

  1203. are sinners,

  1204. and yes,

  1205. God is holy,

  1206. now we can

  1207. draw near to

  1208. God with

  1209. boldness and

  1210. with confidence.

  1211. We don't have

  1212. to find our

  1213. identity and

  1214. satisfaction in

  1215. the things of

  1216. this world.

  1217. We can come

  1218. to God and

  1219. find it in

  1220. Him, the

  1221. one we were

  1222. created for.

  1223. We have

  1224. boldness and

  1225. access with

  1226. confidence.

  1227. It's not

  1228. presumption,

  1229. it's not pride

  1230. like Korah,

  1231. but real

  1232. confidence.

  1233. It's boldness

  1234. even because of

  1235. what God has

  1236. accomplished in

  1237. Jesus Christ on

  1238. our behalf.

  1239. We see this

  1240. theme throughout

  1241. the New Testament,

  1242. but perhaps

  1243. Hebrews 10,

  1244. 19 through

  1245. 25 says it

  1246. best.

  1247. The author of

  1248. Hebrews says,

  1249. therefore,

  1250. brothers and

  1251. sisters, since

  1252. we have confidence

  1253. to enter the

  1254. holy places by

  1255. the blood of

  1256. Jesus, by the

  1257. new and living

  1258. way that He

  1259. opened for us

  1260. through the

  1261. curtain that is

  1262. through His

  1263. flesh, and

  1264. since we have

  1265. a great priest

  1266. over the house

  1267. of God, let

  1268. us draw near

  1269. with a true

  1270. heart and full

  1271. assurance of

  1272. faith, with

  1273. our hearts

  1274. sprinkled clean

  1275. from an evil

  1276. conscience, and

  1277. our bodies washed

  1278. with pure water.

  1279. Let us hold

  1280. fast the

  1281. confession of

  1282. our hope without

  1283. wavering, for He

  1284. who promised is

  1285. faithful.

  1286. And let us

  1287. consider how to

  1288. stir up one

  1289. another to love

  1290. and good works,

  1291. not neglecting to

  1292. meet together as is

  1293. the habit of some,

  1294. but encouraging one

  1295. another, and all the

1296. more as you see the

  1297. day drawing near.

  1298. Amen, friends.

  1299. Through Jesus, the

  1300. way is open.

  1301. We have a great

  1302. priest over the

  1303. house of God.

  1304. We don't have to

1305. come to God on our

  1306. own terms, which are

  1307. failing and faulty, but

  1308. God has graciously

  1309. opened heaven's door

  1310. through Jesus, and we

  1311. can come in.

  1312. We have a great

  1313. priest over the

1314. house of God, so let

1315. us draw near in faith.

1316. Let us hold fast in

1317. hope, and let us stir

1318. up one another in love.

  1319. Let us pray.

1320. Father, we do ask that

  1321. You would impress upon

  1322. us, Your people, again

  1323. a genuine sense of

  1324. Your holiness.

1325. Help us to live in

  1326. awe of You, God.

1327. Help us to have a

  1328. rightful reverence

  1329. before You.

1330. And Lord, help us to

  1331. see that in Christ,

  1332. what would mean certain

  1333. destruction for us,

  1334. drawing near to You,

  1335. our holy God, has

  1336. now, Lord, become an

  1337. open path where the

1338. work of Christ and the

  1339. intercession of Christ

  1340. has paved the way.

1341. Lord, open our eyes to

  1342. see this truth afresh.

  1343. Give us confidence and

  1344. boldness as we go

1345. forth this week in His

  1346. name.

  1347. Amen.

  1348. Amen.
