  1. Well, good morning. Again, it's good to see all of you. If you are feeling hot and overwhelmed, we will say this a few times this summer, there are fans.

  2. If you can't feel a fan, it's okay for you to get up and move to a place you can feel a fan. Or you can go downstairs to our lower level meeting room, which is air conditioned and live streams are service from there.

  3. We would rather you get up and move in order to continue to participate than sit in the pews and suffer. So, that's our heart as we come to God's Word today.

  4. So, I want to begin by asking a question. When you think of a priest, what do you think of? Maybe you think of Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, the pagan priest offering human sacrifices.

  5. Or maybe you think of the princess bride, marriage. Marriage is what brings us here together today. Maybe you think of a priest like that.

  6. Maybe you think of the classic stereotypical priest in a Catholic school, ready to wrap your knuckles for chewing gum or not having your socks pulled up.

  7. Or maybe you think of a Catholic priest as a judge whose life is consumed with exposing all of your unrighteous living and to bring you shame.

  8. Now, some of you may have had good experiences with priests and have different views, but these negative responses are typical in our culture and often come from our personal experience, don't they?

  9. But is that how we are supposed to think of priests? Well, that brings us to our text today.

  10. We are going through the summer, the book of Numbers, and we are in Numbers 17 and 18.

  11. Interestingly, at the end of this week, I did a Google search online to see if I could find a sermon on Numbers 18 in the internet, and the answer was no.

  12. So, here we go. We're going to do it, and we're going to be exploring parts of the Scripture that maybe aren't always looked at.

  13. And just to remind you where we are as we come into this section, last week, Pastor Nick preached about chapter 16,

  14. where the people of God rose up and rebelled, at least a portion of them, rebelled against the priesthood that God had established among His people.

  15. The followers of Korah, a part of the Levites, rose up against them, and God brought judgment upon them because of their rebellion.

  16. They were swallowed up by the earth, and then a plague came, and Aaron, the high priest who God had anointed, brought his censer full of incense,

  17. and the smoke of that stopped the plague that was a second judgment against the people of God because they were rebelling against God's plan.

  18. And the people realized the danger of trying to come to God without a priest, of trying to come to God on their own.

  19. But they haven't yet even learned that lesson. We'll see in verse 12 of chapter 17, they will come back to this refrain again and say,

  20. we are undone. We will all perish if we try to approach God.

  21. But God speaks a word of hope to them and to us today because God has given the priesthood in order to bring blessing to His people.

  22. And that's the overarching theme of verses of chapters 17 and 18.

  23. We're going to walk through it in three sections, so we'll read it in a section at a time

  24. to see how these blessings come to God's people through the priesthood.

  25. So, first, chapter 17.

  26. This is page 117 in the Pew Bible.

  27. If you want to pull out your Pew Bible and follow along, or it will be on the screen behind me as well.

  28. The Lord spoke to Moses saying, speak to the people of Israel and get from them staffs, one for each father's house,

  29. from all their chiefs according to their father's house, twelve staffs.

  30. Write each man's name on his staff and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi.

  31. For there shall be one staff for the head of each father's house.

  32. Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony where I meet with you.

  33. And the staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout.

  34. Thus I will make to cease from me the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.

  35. Moses spoke to the people of Israel, and all their chiefs gave him staff, one for each chief according to their father's houses,

  36. twelve staffs, and the staff of Aaron was among their staffs.

  37. And Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord in the tent of testimony.

  38. On the next day, Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold,

  39. the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.

  40. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel.

  41. And they looked, and each man took his staff.

  42. And the Lord said to Moses,

  43. Put back the staff of Aaron before the testimony,

  44. to be kept as a sign for the rebels,

  45. that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.

  46. Thus did Moses, as the Lord commanded him, so he did.

  47. And the people of Israel said to Moses,

  48. Behold, we perish.

  49. We are undone.

  50. We are all undone.

  51. Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord shall die.

  52. Are we all to perish?

  53. Let me pray as we look at God's Word this morning.

  54. Lord, thank you for this Word.

  55. Thank you that, Lord, by your Spirit, you have given us this Word so that we might know you and be instructed by you,

  56. so we might understand what you are up to in the world,

  57. and Lord, what it means to be your people.

  58. Lord, I pray for your help this morning.

  59. You would help me to speak clearly as I ought.

  60. And I pray for all of our hearts,

  61. that we would sit under your Word,

  62. that we would receive it as from you.

  63. Lord, that we would know it in our minds,

  64. that we would love it in our hearts,

  65. that we would do it with our hands.

  66. Thank you, Lord.

  67. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  68. Amen.

  69. So the first thing we see in chapter 17 is that God gives a priest

  70. who brings abundant life to his people.

  71. Right?

  72. So this story, remember, they've just come out of judgment,

  73. and God comes to Moses and says,

  74. okay, I've got to do more to establish Aaron in the eyes of the people

  75. as the one that I have chosen.

  76. And so he calls all the tribes together.

  77. He says, we want one tribe from the leader of each tribe to give a staff.

  78. And they write a name on it.

  79. And in case you're doing a little math and you're wondering,

  80. the Hebrew is a little less clear than the way…

  81. The English suggests there were 12 staffs,

  82. then there were 13 staffs.

  83. There were 13 staffs total because there are 12 tribes.

  84. And then on top of that, there was the tribe of Levi.

  85. Because, if you remember, Jacob had 12 sons.

  86. Those were the 12 tribes.

  87. But then Levi gets set apart earlier,

  88. and the two sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim,

  89. become their own individual tribes.

  90. In the 12 tribes, when they enter the land,

  91. they will get 12 different parcels of land.

  92. Levi will get something different,

  93. and we'll see that by the end of our passage.

  94. So, sorry, that was a little excursus

  95. into the history of that, but that's the way it was.

  96. So, 13 staffs, Moses gathers with the names of these tribes,

  97. and he puts them in the tent of meeting,

  98. the holy place, right?

  99. The Ark of the Covenant in the middle of the tabernacle.

  100. And he puts them in, and he says,

  101. just wait and see.

  102. And then he comes back the next morning,

  103. and there are 12 dead sticks,

  104. and there's one staff that has budded.

  105. And it hasn't just budded.

  106. It has budded, and it's flowered,

  107. and it's borne fruit, right?

  108. Don't miss the fact that this is not

  109. some sort of natural process

  110. where somehow a green staff

  111. became a little bit more lifelike.

  112. God did something miraculous

  113. to picture something that was dead

  114. being brought back to life,

  115. and not only life, but abundant life

  116. where it was producing something, almonds,

  117. that would bless those who received it.

  118. So, this is the sign that God gives.

  119. Now, here's a question for you.

  120. If I say to you,

  121. what's the biblical significance of almonds?

  122. Anything? Anyone?

  123. Yeah, me neither, right?

  124. So, I did a word search,

  125. and do you know what?

  126. It's amazing.

  127. There are a couple of other references to almonds,

  128. but there's this really neat one

  129. in Exodus 25.

  130. Exodus 25 is when God is giving instructions

  131. to the people of God on Mount Sinai

  132. as they receive the law

  133. about the building of the tabernacle,

  134. the place where God will meet with his people.

  135. And in it, there's a lampstand.

  136. And that lampstand has, like a menorah,

  137. like multiple branches

  138. that will then hold candles

  139. to bring light into the temple

  140. where the priests are offering sacrifices.

  141. But in Exodus 25, verses 33 and 34,

    Exodus 25:33

  142. it describes those branches like this.

  143. They will have three cups

  144. made like almond blossoms,

  145. each with calyx and flour.

  146. And on one branch,

  147. and three cups made like almond blossoms,

  148. each with calyx and flour,

  149. on the other branch.

  150. So, for the six branches

  151. going out from the lampstand,

  152. and on the lampstand itself,

  153. there shall be four cups

  154. made like almond blossoms,

  155. their calyxes and flour.

  156. So, this is the one place

  157. in all the ritual life of Israel

  158. where almonds are mentioned.

  159. And it's amazing.

  160. I don't think, by the way,

  161. that Aaron's staff

  162. was made from an almond tree.

  163. It might have been.

  164. I suppose it's possible.

  165. But I don't think that was the point.

  166. The point is that the people of God

  167. would remember this passage

  168. and would see that Aaron alone

  169. has the right to minister

  170. in that place where the lampstand was,

  171. he and his sons in the priesthood,

  172. right?

  173. And that, that lampstand was a picture.

  174. One commentator says

  175. that the lampstand was like

  176. a stylized almond tree

  177. set within the holy place

  178. representing Eden's tree of life,

  179. its light symbolizing

  180. the light of Yahweh's blessing.

  181. Did you get that?

  182. In this place, in the temple,

  183. there was this lampstand

  184. that pictured a tree of life

  185. and it had almond blossoms.

  186. And so, when you get to this sign

  187. in Numbers,

  188. God is reminding the people,

  189. the priesthood is there

  190. so that they can minister

  191. in the tabernacle

  192. so that you may have

  193. the abundant life

  194. that I'm going to bring you

  195. because I am your God.

  196. What an amazing thing it is

  197. that God has given us

  198. a priesthood that brings life.

  199. Sometimes we feel like

  200. coming to God

  201. is more like being called

  202. into the principal's office.

  203. We know we've messed up

  204. and now we're just waiting

  205. for the other shoe to drop

  206. and the consequence time

  207. to happen for us

  208. and we are afraid

  209. and we fear the outcome, right?

  210. And it's fascinating

  211. because that's what God's people did.

  212. They said,

  213. we're not done.

  214. How can we ever approach God?

  215. But God is trying to say,

  216. your priesthood is there

  217. to give you life,

  218. not death.

  219. And of course,

  220. we know that the priesthood

  221. of Aaron

  222. is just a picture

  223. of a priesthood

  224. that's yet to come.

  225. That Jesus would come

  226. as a greater priest

  227. and that He would come

  228. as one

  229. not to bring death

  230. and destruction,

  231. but to bring life

  232. life

  233. and life

  234. that is abundant

  235. in Him.

  236. And He would picture

  237. this death

  238. by being

  239. one who is made dead

  240. and then who is brought

  241. back to life

  242. as the resurrected

  243. Son of God.

  244. And so,

  245. this staff of Aaron

  246. both affirms

  247. the priesthood

  248. and pictures ahead

  249. the resurrection life

  250. that Jesus will bring

  251. as our high priest

  252. to all

  253. who believe

  254. in Him.

  255. And because Jesus

  256. is raised from the dead,

  257. you don't have to fear

  258. going to God

  259. because He's a God

  260. who delights

  261. to give life

  262. to those

  263. who come to Him.

  264. So,

  265. chapter 17,

  266. the priesthood

  267. that brings life.

  268. Let's look ahead

  269. now to verse,

  270. chapter 18

  271. and think,

  272. what else do we learn

  273. from these sections

  274. about the priesthood

  275. that God gives?

  276. What we'll see,

  277. well,

  278. let's read it first.

  279. So,

  280. we'll look at

  281. verses 8,

  282. chapter 18,

  283. verses 1 through 7.

  284. So,

  285. the Lord said to Aaron,

  286. you and your sons

  287. in your father's house

  288. with you

  289. shall bear iniquity

  290. connected with the sanctuary

  291. and you and your sons

  292. with you

  293. shall bear iniquity

  294. connected with your priesthood

  295. and with you

  296. bring your brothers also

  297. the tribe of Levi,

  298. the tribe of your father

  299. that they may join you

  300. and minister to you

  301. while you and your sons

  302. with you

  303. are before the tent

  304. of the testimony.

  305. They shall keep guard

  306. over you

  307. and the whole tent

  308. but shall not come near

  309. to the vessels

  310. of the sanctuary

  311. or to the altar

  312. lest they and you die.

  313. They shall join you

  314. and keep guard

  315. over the tent

  316. of the meeting

  317. for all the service

  318. of the tent

  319. and no outsider

  320. shall come near you

  321. and you shall keep guard

  322. over the sanctuary

  323. and over the altar

  324. that there may never again

  325. be wrath

  326. on the people of Israel

  327. and behold

  328. I have taken your brothers

  329. the Levites

  330. from among the people

  331. of Israel

  332. they are a gift to you

  333. given to the Lord

  334. to do the service

  335. of the tent of meeting

  336. and you and your sons

  337. with you

  338. shall guard

  339. your priesthood

  340. for all that concerns

  341. the altar

  342. and that is within

  343. the veil

  344. and you shall serve

  345. I give you

  346. your priesthood

  347. as a gift

  348. and any outsider

  349. who comes near

  350. shall be put

  351. to death

  352. so the second thing

  353. that God's priesthood

  354. brings us

  355. is access to God

  356. why do I say that

  357. well you've got to go back

  358. and recognize a couple things

  359. first remember the context

  360. of Korah's rebellion

  361. where people rose up

  362. and said we can get to God

  363. without the priest

  364. without the Levite

  365. we can just go in

  366. straight ahead

  367. and lo and behold

  368. they found out

  369. the holiness of God

  370. is too great

  371. to be born

  372. for sinful people

  373. to merely approach him

  374. go back and listen

  375. to Pastor Nick's sermon

  376. last week

  377. to get all of that

  378. but the other thing

  379. you need to remember

  380. is that

  381. what God is reaffirming

  382. to Aaron here

  383. is the structure

  384. of the camp

  385. okay this goes back

  386. to numbers

  387. one through four

  388. we're trying to pull

  389. all the threads together

  390. so you can follow

  391. through all this

  392. so remember

  393. that in chapters

  394. one through four

  395. when God set up

  396. the people of God

  397. to leave

  398. he set it up

  399. with a particular

  400. structure

  401. to picture

  402. things that he thought

  403. were important

  404. first

  405. at the center

  406. of the camp

  407. was the tabernacle

  408. the tent of meeting

  409. and that's where

  410. God's presence

  411. was manifested

  412. that's where Moses

  413. met face to face

  414. with God

  415. and that's where

  416. Aaron and his sons

  417. would offer sacrifices

  418. in worship to God

  419. according to God's instruction

  420. so God was in the center

  421. of the people of God

  422. and then you had

  423. these other people

  424. you had the priests

  425. ministering within the temple

  426. and then you had the Levites

  427. and the four tribes

  428. and you can look at chapter four

  429. and see all the details

  430. they had particular roles

  431. about packing and carrying

  432. and setting up

  433. and all that stuff

  434. but the Levites

  435. were tasked

  436. with ministering

  437. on the outer

  438. outside of the tent

  439. but between

  440. the tent of the meeting

  441. and the people

  442. then the twelve tribes

  443. who were set up

  444. in a square

  445. around that

  446. and that's what they would do

  447. when they were camped

  448. and then when they would move

  449. they would elongate it

  450. and make it a big line

  451. but the same picture

  452. basically is there

  453. with concentric circles

  454. going from

  455. God at the tent of meeting

  456. to the priests

  457. to the Levites

  458. and then to the tribes

  459. of the people

  460. and then the people outside

  461. and that was the picture

  462. that you got

  463. right

  464. and God is reminding

  465. Aaron

  466. and the Levites

  467. and the people of God

  468. by extension

  469. that this structure

  470. had a purpose

  471. right

  472. the priests

  473. had a particular role

  474. to deal with

  475. the holy things

  476. in the vessel

  477. to offer sacrifices

  478. to atone for the sin

  479. of people

  480. inside the tent

  481. they stood between

  482. God

  483. and the people

  484. and represented them

  485. so that the people

  486. of God

  487. and their sin

  488. would be addressed

  489. the Levites

  490. surrounded them

  491. and served

  492. the priests

  493. so that they could

  494. continue this act

  495. and acted as a buffer

  496. and here in this passage

  497. you see very clearly

  498. they were the guard

  499. of the tent of meeting

  500. to make sure

  501. that people

  502. didn't fall into

  503. the same sin

  504. that had happened

  505. in chapter 16

  506. of thinking

  507. you could just run

  508. rush right into

  509. the tent of meeting

  510. and face God

  511. in his holy of holies

  512. on your own

  513. because

  514. as we're reminded

  515. God's holiness

  516. is like the sun

  517. it is beautiful

  518. it is radiant

  519. but it cannot bear impurity

  520. it will burn up

  521. anything

  522. that draws close

  523. that is not

  524. perfectly pure

  525. and so the priests

  526. and the Levites

  527. lived between

  528. and did you notice

  529. the phrase

  530. that they will bear

  531. the iniquity

  532. of the sanctuary

  533. that they will

  534. actually stand

  535. and bear the consequences

  536. if the Levites

  537. transgressed

  538. and tried to do

  539. what the priests

  540. would do

  541. both the Levites

  542. and the priests

  543. would die

  544. if people

  545. from the outside

  546. tried to come in

  547. and the Levites

  548. allowed that to happen

  549. the Levites

  550. would die

  551. so they stood

  552. in the gap

  553. and bore

  554. responsibility

  555. for the judgment

  556. of God

  557. against the people

  558. all of this

  559. is to say

  560. God created a system

  561. like the guardrails

  562. a couple of summers ago

  563. we went to Yellowstone

  564. National Park

  565. and if you've ever seen

  566. the hot springs

  567. right

  568. they're absolutely beautiful

  569. they're gorgeous

  570. they're also really hot

  571. and every once in a while

  572. you see

  573. that some bison

  574. wandered into a hot spring

  575. and do you know

  576. what happens

  577. it dies

  578. really quickly

  579. it's boiled to death

  580. almost instantaneously

  581. and so

  582. when you go visit

  583. these things

  584. there are guardrails

  585. there are boundaries

  586. that are set up

  587. so that you and me

  588. and the silly

  589. tourists

  590. in our world

  591. that always think

  592. I've got to get

  593. a little closer

  594. I've got to get

  595. the perfect selfie

  596. and transgress

  597. these boundaries

  598. and end up falling

  599. into these things

  600. and dying

  601. that's what the priests

  602. and the Levites

  603. were doing

  604. they were preventing

  605. the foolish

  606. Israelite people

  607. from doing something

  608. that would lead

  609. to their death

  610. by their guarding

  611. the tent

  612. and the tabernacle

  613. by their playing

  614. their particular roles

  615. that God

  616. had given them

  617. friends

  618. how much more now

  619. do we have

  620. a high priest

  621. who mediates

  622. our access

  623. to God

  624. just like it was

  625. a matter of life

  626. and death

  627. for them

  628. we too

  629. have a high priest

  630. who mediates

  631. life and death

  632. to us

  633. so in Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:24

  634. chapter 9

  635. verses 24

  636. and following

  637. the writer

  638. says this

  639. for Christ

  640. has entered

  641. not into

  642. holy places

  643. made with hands

  644. which are copies

  645. of the true things

  646. but into heaven

  647. itself

  648. now to appear

  649. in the presence

  650. of God

  651. on our behalf

  652. nor was it

  653. to offer himself

  654. repeatedly

  655. as the high priest

  656. entered the holy places

  657. every year

  658. with blood

  659. not his own

  660. for then he would

  661. have had to suffer

  662. repeatedly

  663. since the foundation

  664. of the world

  665. but as it is

  666. he has appeared

  667. once for all

  668. at the end

  669. of the ages

  670. to put away

  671. sin

  672. by the sacrificing

  673. of himself

  674. and just as it is

  675. appointed for a man

  676. to die once

  677. and after that

  678. comes judgment

  679. so Christ

  680. having been

  681. offered once

  682. to bear the sins

  683. of many

  684. will appear

  685. a second time

  686. not to deal

  687. with sin

  688. but to save

  689. those who are

  690. eagerly

  691. waiting for him

  692. okay

  693. there's a lot

  694. here

  695. I don't know

  696. if you've noticed

  697. how often

  698. we keep quoting

  699. the book of Hebrews

  700. as we're reading

  701. numbers

  702. but it's a really

  703. amazing

  704. rich

  705. deep connection

  706. between these books

  707. so for your

  708. for your benefit

  709. but what we see

  710. here in Hebrews

  711. is picturing

  712. Christ being

  713. the ultimate

  714. high priest

  715. who goes in

  716. and by his

  717. final and perfect

  718. sacrifice

  719. makes it possible

  720. for us

  721. to approach

  722. God

  723. because our sins

  724. have been dealt

  725. with

  726. because he has

  727. died in our

  728. place

  729. and so

  730. when we

  731. on this

  732. side

  733. of the

  734. crucifixion

  735. of Jesus

  736. in his

  737. sacrifice

  738. and the

  739. resurrection

  740. of Jesus

  741. in his

  742. justification

  743. approach

  744. God

  745. in Christ

  746. trusting in

  747. him

  748. knowing that

  749. we have

  750. no righteousness

  751. that we would

  752. be just like

  753. the Israelites

  754. burning up

  755. if we try to

  756. approach him

  757. on our own

  758. but because

  759. Christ has

  760. done that

  761. and because

  762. Christ was

  763. perfect in

  764. his sacrifice

  765. we now have

  766. access to

  767. God

  768. we have a

  769. mediator

  770. who has

  771. opened the

  772. doors

  773. I didn't

  774. read Hebrews

  775. 10 19

  776. through 25

  777. because we've

  778. read it

  779. every week

  780. for the last

  781. three weeks

  782. but go back

  783. and read it

  784. again

  785. because

  786. therefore

  787. Christ has

  788. opened a way

  789. for us

  790. by the

  791. sprinkling

  792. of his

  793. blood

  794. and the

  795. cleansing

  796. of our

  797. conscience

  798. for us

  799. to approach

  800. God

  801. with great

  802. confidence

  803. this is

  804. the access

  805. that God

  806. has given

  807. to us

  808. he is

  809. our

  810. great

  811. guardian

  812. who has

  813. made a way

  814. so that we

  815. have access

  816. to him

  817. so this is

  818. the second

  819. blessing

  820. that we see

  821. the first one

  822. is abundant

  823. life

  824. the second

  825. one is

  826. access to

  827. God

  828. and fellowship

  829. with him

  830. and then the

  831. last section

  832. gives us

  833. one more

  834. thing

  835. to see

  836. about the

  837. priesthood

  838. now this

  839. is a longer

  840. section

  841. so bear

  842. with me

  843. here we

  844. go

  845. starting

  846. in verse

  847. 8 of

  848. chapter

  849. 18

  850. then the

  851. Lord spoke

  852. to Aaron

  853. behold I

  854. have given

  855. you charge

  856. of the

  857. contributions

  858. made to

  859. me

  860. all the

  861. consecrated

  862. things of

  863. the people

  864. of Israel

  865. I have

  866. given them

  867. to you

  868. as a

  869. portion

  870. and to

  871. your

  872. sons

  873. as a

  874. perpetual

  875. due

  876. this

  877. shall

  878. be yours

  879. of the

  880. most

  881. holy

  882. things

  883. reserved

  884. from

  885. the

  886. fire

  887. every

  888. offering

  889. of

  890. theirs

  891. every

  892. grain

  893. offering

  894. of theirs

  895. and every

  896. sin

  897. offering

  898. of theirs

  899. which they

  900. render

  901. to me

  902. shall be

  903. most holy

  904. to you

  905. and to

  906. your

  907. sons

  908. in a

  909. most

  910. holy

  911. place

  912. you

  913. shall

  914. eat

  915. it

  916. every

  917. male

  918. shall

  919. eat

  920. of it

  921. it

  922. is

  923. holy

  924. to

  925. you

  926. this

  927. also

  928. is

  929. yours

  930. the

  931. contribution

  932. of

  933. their

  934. gift

  935. all

  936. the

  937. wave

  938. offerings

  939. of

  940. the

  941. people

  942. of

  943. Israel

  944. I

  945. have

  946. given

  947. them

  948. to

  949. you

  950. and

  951. to

  952. your

  953. sons

  954. and

  955. daughters

  956. with

  957. you

  958. as

  959. a

  960. perpetual

  961. due

  962. everyone

  963. who

  964. is

  965. clean

  966. in your

  967. house

  968. may

  969. eat

  970. the

  971. first

  972. fruits

  973. of

  974. what

  975. they

  976. give

  977. to

  978. the

  979. Lord

  980. I

  981. give

  982. to

  983. you

  984. the

  985. first

  986. ripe

  987. fruits

  988. of

  989. all

  990. that

  991. is

  992. in

  993. the

  994. land

  995. which

  996. they

  997. bring

  998. to

  999. the

  1000. Lord

  1001. shall

  1002. be

  1003. yours

  1004. everyone

  1005. who

  1006. is

  1007. clean

  1008. in

  1009. your

  1010. house

  1011. may

  1012. eat

  1013. it

  1014. every

  1015. devoted

  1016. thing

  1017. in

  1018. Israel

  1019. shall

  1020. be

  1021. yours

  1022. everything

  1023. that

  1024. opens

  1025. the

  1026. womb

  1027. of

  1028. all

  1029. the

  1030. flesh

  1031. whether

  1032. man

  1033. or

  1034. beast

  1035. which

  1036. they

  1037. offer

  1038. to

  1039. the

  1040. Lord

  1041. shall

  1042. be

  1043. yours

  1044. unclean

  1045. animals

  1046. you

  1047. shall

  1048. redeem

  1049. and

  1050. their

  1051. redemption

  1052. price

  1053. at

  1054. a

  1055. month

  1056. old

  1057. you

  1058. shall

  1059. redeem

  1060. them

  1061. you

  1062. shall

  1063. fix

  1064. at

  1065. five

  1066. shekels

  1067. of

  1068. in

  1069. silver

  1070. according

  1071. to

  1072. the

  1073. shekel

  1074. of

  1075. the

  1076. sanctuary

  1077. which

  1078. is

  1079. twenty

  1080. geras

  1081. but

  1082. for

  1085. born

  1086. of

  1087. a

  1088. cow

  1089. for

  1090. the

  1100. a

  1101. goat

  1102. you

  1103. shall

  1104. not

  1105. redeem

  1106. they

  1107. are

  1108. holy

  1109. you

  1110. shall

  1111. sprinkle

  1112. their

  1113. blood

  1114. on

  1115. the

  1116. altar

  1117. and

  1118. shall

  1119. burn

  1120. their

  1121. fat

  1122. as

  1123. a

  1124. food

  1125. offering

  1126. with

  1127. a

  1128. pleasant

  1129. pleasing

  1130. aroma

  1131. to

  1132. the

  1133. Lord

  1134. but

  1135. their

  1136. flesh

  1137. shall

  1138. be

  1139. yours

  1140. as

  1141. the

  1142. breast

  1143. that

  1144. is

  1145. waved

  1146. and

  1147. as

  1148. the

  1150. thigh

  1151. are

  1152. yours

  1153. all

  1154. the

  1156. that

  1157. the

  1159. of

  1160. Israel

  1161. present

  1162. to

  1163. the

  1164. Lord

  1165. I

  1176. you

  1177. as

  1178. a

  1179. perpetual

  1180. due

  1181. it

  1182. is

  1183. a

  1184. covenant

  1185. of

  1186. salt

  1187. forever

  1188. before

  1189. the

  1190. Lord

  1191. for

  1192. you

  1193. and

  1194. for

  1195. your

  1196. offspring

  1197. with

  1198. you

  1199. and

  1200. the

  1201. Lord

  1202. said

  1203. to

  1204. Aaron

  1205. you

  1206. shall

  1207. have

  1208. no

  1209. inheritance

  1210. in

  1211. their

  1212. land

  1213. neither

  1214. shall

  1215. you

  1216. have

  1217. any

  1218. portion

  1219. among

  1220. them

  1221. I

  1222. am

  1223. your

  1224. portion

  1225. and

  1226. your

  1227. inheritance

  1228. among

  1229. the

  1230. people

  1231. of

  1232. Israel

  1233. to

  1234. Levites

  1235. I

  1236. have

  1237. given

  1238. every

  1239. tithe

  1240. in

  1241. Israel

  1242. for

  1243. an

  1244. inheritance

  1245. in

  1246. return

  1247. for

  1248. their

  1249. service

  1250. that

  1251. they

  1252. do

  1253. their

  1254. service

  1255. in

  1256. the

  1257. tent

  1258. of

  1259. the

  1260. !

  1261. so

  1262. that

  1263. the

  1264. people

  1265. of

  1266. Israel

  1267. do

  1268. not

  1269. come

  1270. near

  1271. the

  1272. tent

  1273. of

  1274. the

  1275. meeting

  1276. lest

  1277. they

  1278. bear

  1279. sin

  1280. and

  1281. die

  1282. but

  1283. the

  1284. Levites

  1285. shall

  1286. do

  1287. the

  1288. service

  1289. of

  1290. the

  1291. tent

  1292. of

  1293. the

  1295. and

  1296. they

  1297. shall

  1298. bear

  1299. their

  1300. iniquity

  1301. it

  1302. shall

  1303. be

  1304. a

  1305. perpetual

  1306. statute

  1307. throughout

  1308. your

  1309. generations

  1310. and

  1311. among

  1312. the

  1313. people

  1314. of

  1315. Israel

  1316. that

  1317. they

  1318. shall

  1319. have

  1320. no

  1321. inheritance

  1322. for

  1323. the

  1324. tithe

  1325. of

  1326. the

  1327. people

  1328. of

  1329. Israel

  1330. which

  1331. they

  1332. present

  1333. as

  1334. contribution

  1335. to

  1336. the

  1337. Lord

  1338. I

  1339. have

  1340. given

  1341. to

  1342. the

  1343. Levites

  1344. for

  1345. an

  1346. inheritance

  1347. for

  1348. I

  1349. have

  1350. said

  1351. of

  1352. them

  1353. that

  1354. they

  1355. shall

  1356. have

  1357. no

  1358. inheritance

  1359. among

  1360. the

  1361. people

  1362. of

  1363. Israel

  1364. and

  1365. the

  1366. Lord

  1367. spoke

  1368. to

  1369. Moses

  1370. saying

  1371. moreover

  1372. you

  1373. shall

  1374. speak

  1375. and

  1376. say

  1377. to

  1378. the

  1379. Levites

  1380. when

  1381. you

  1416. and

  1417. your

  1419. shall

  1420. be

  1421. counted

  1422. to

  1423. you

  1424. as

  1475. Aaron

  1476. the

  1478. out

  1479. of

  1480. all

  1481. the

  1482. gifts

  1483. to

  1484. you

  1485. you

  1486. shall

  1487. present

  1488. every

  1489. contribution

  1490. due

  1491. to

  1492. the

  1493. Lord

  1494. from

  1495. each

  1496. its

  1497. best

  1498. part

  1499. is

  1500. to

  1501. be

  1502. dedicated

  1503. therefore

  1504. you

  1505. shall

  1506. say

  1507. to

  1508. them

  1509. when

  1510. you

  1511. had

  1512. offered

  1513. from

  1514. it

  1515. the

  1516. best

  1517. of

  1518. it

  1519. then

  1520. the

  1521. rest

  1522. shall

  1523. be

  1524. counted

  1525. to

  1526. the

  1527. Levites

  1528. as

  1529. produce

  1530. of

  1531. the

  1532. threshing

  1533. floor

  1534. and

  1535. as

  1536. produce

  1537. of

  1538. the

  1539. wine

  1540. press

  1541. and

  1542. you

  1543. may

  1544. eat

  1545. of

  1546. it

  1547. in

  1548. any

  1549. reason

  1550. of

  1551. it

  1552. when

  1553. you

  1554. have

  1555. contributed

  1556. the

  1557. best

  1558. of

  1559. it

  1560. but

  1561. you

  1562. shall

  1563. not

  1564. profane

  1565. the

  1566. holy

  1567. things

  1568. of

  1569. the

  1570. people

  1571. of

  1572. Israel

  1573. lest

  1574. you

  1575. die

  1576. okay

  1577. reading

  1578. the

  1579. law

  1580. is so

  1581. much

  1582. fun

  1583. isn't

  1584. it

  1585. there's

  1586. lots

  1587. of

  1588. little

  1589. details

  1590. in

  1591. here

  1592. and

  1593. there

  1594. are

  1595. lots

  1596. of

  1597. threads

  1598. that

  1599. I

  1600. could

  1601. pull

  1602. out

  1603. about

  1604. different

  1605. kinds

  1606. of

  1607. offerings

  1608. or

  1609. about

  1610. how

  1611. do

  1612. we

  1613. redeem

  1614. people

  1615. and

  1616. things

  1617. like

  1618. that

  1619. but

  1620. I

  1621. don't

  1622. think

  1623. actually

  1624. that's

  1625. the

  1626. big

  1627. picture

  1628. because

  1629. what

  1630. we

  1631. see

  1632. here

  1633. is

  1634. basically

  1635. two

  1636. big

  1637. things

  1638. right

  1639. what

  1640. God

  1641. is

  1642. doing

  1643. in

  1644. this

  1645. section

  1646. is

  1647. assuring

  1648. both

  1649. Aaron

  1650. in

  1651. verses

  1652. 11

  1653. through

  1654. verses

  1655. 8

  1656. through

  1657. 19

  1658. and

  1659. then

  1660. the

  1661. Levites

  1662. in

  1663. 21

  1664. through

  1665. 32

  1666. he's

  1667. saying

  1668. I'm

  1669. going

  1670. to

  1671. provide

  1672. for

  1673. you

  1674. even

  1675. though

  1676. you

  1677. don't

  1678. have

  1679. an

  1680. inheritance

  1681. of

  1682. the

  1683. land

  1684. because

  1685. the

  1686. other

  1687. 12

  1688. tribes

  1689. will

  1690. take

  1691. up

  1692. all

  1693. the

  1694. land

  1695. and

  1696. the

  1697. promise

  1698. I

  1699. will

  1700. provide

  1701. for

  1702. you

  1703. through

  1704. the

  1705. contributions

  1706. and

  1707. one

  1708. of

  1709. the

  1710. things

  1711. that

  1712. remarkable

  1713. is

  1714. if

  1715. you

  1716. look

  1717. through

  1718. this

  1719. over

  1720. and

  1721. over

  1722. again

  1723. God

  1724. isn't

  1725. instructing

  1726. the

  1727. people

  1728. hey

  1729. you

  1730. need

  1731. to

  1732. give

  1733. to

  1734. these

  1735. God

  1736. is

  1737. saying

  1738. I

  1739. will

  1740. provide

  1741. for

  1742. you

  1743. I

  1744. will

  1745. provide

  1746. as

  1747. these

  1748. people

  1749. give

  1750. to

  1751. me

  1752. I

  1753. will

  1754. be

  1755. the

  1756. one

  1757. who

  1758. will

  1759. provide

  1760. for

  1761. you

  1762. God

  1763. is

  1764. the

  1765. source

  1766. of

  1767. their

  1768. abundant

  1769. provision

  1770. and

  1771. generous

  1772. inheritance

  1773. and

  1774. when

  1775. you

  1776. look

  1777. through

  1778. the

  1779. details

  1780. you

  1781. see

  1782. they

  1783. get

  1784. the

  1785. best

  1786. stuff

  1787. they

  1788. get

  1789. the

  1790. first

  1791. fruits

  1792. of

  1793. the

  1794. grain

  1795. and

  1796. of

  1797. the

  1798. wine

  1799. they

  1800. get

  1801. the

  1802. fat

  1803. parts

  1804. of

  1805. the

  1806. meat

  1807. that

  1808. is

  1809. offering

  1810. all

  1811. that

  1812. doesn't

  1813. go

  1814. straight

  1815. to

  1816. the

  1817. Lord

  1818. is

  1819. available

  1820. to

  1821. them

  1822. and

  1823. it's

  1824. not

  1825. just

  1826. to

  1827. them

  1828. but

  1829. it's

  1830. for

  1831. their

  1832. whole

  1833. families

  1834. right

  1835. did

  1836. you

  1837. hear

  1838. again

  1839. commentaries

  1840. I

  1841. read

  1842. actually

  1843. argued

  1844. that

  1845. this

  1846. is

  1847. the

  1848. very

  1849. center

  1850. of

  1851. the

  1852. entire

  1853. book

  1854. of

  1855. numbers

  1856. we

  1857. can

  1858. talk

  1859. about

  1860. that

  1861. later

  1862. but

  1863. it's

  1864. an

  1865. interesting

  1866. is

  1867. verse

  1868. 20

  1869. look

  1870. back

  1871. with

  1872. me

  1873. at

  1874. verse

  1875. 20

  1876. let me

  1877. read

  1878. it

  1879. again

  1880. for

  1881. you

  1882. and

  1883. the

  1884. Lord

  1885. said

  1886. to

  1887. Aaron

  1888. you

  1889. shall

  1890. have

  1891. no

  1892. inheritance

  1893. in

  1894. their

  1895. land

  1896. neither

  1897. shall

  1898. you

  1899. have

  1900. any

  1901. portion

  1902. among

  1903. them

  1904. I

  1905. am

  1906. your

  1907. portion

  1908. and

  1909. your

  1910. inheritance

  1911. among

  1912. friends

  1913. all

  1914. of

  1915. this

  1916. the

  1917. promise

  1918. that

  1919. goes

  1920. way

  1921. back

  1922. to

  1923. Abraham

  1924. that

  1925. God

  1926. would

  1927. make

  1928. his

  1929. people

  1930. great

  1931. and

  1932. would

  1933. give

  1934. them

  1935. a

  1936. land

  1937. and

  1938. a

  1939. place

  1940. all

  1941. of

  1942. that

  1943. is

  1944. temporary

  1945. in

  1946. some

  1947. way

  1948. because

  1949. God's

  1950. ultimate

  1951. purpose

  1952. is that

  1953. the

  1954. inheritance

  1955. that

  1956. his

  1957. people

  1958. receive

  1959. is

  1960. not

  1961. merely

  1962. a

  1963. place

  1964. but

  1965. him

  1966. God

  1967. himself

  1968. right

  1969. and

  1970. when

  1971. we

  1972. have

  1973. God

  1974. as

  1975. our

  1976. inheritance

  1977. then

  1978. we

  1979. live

  1980. in

  1981. his

  1982. kingdom

  1983. and

  1984. he

  1985. provides

  1986. a

  1987. place

  1988. for

  1989. us

  1990. and

  1991. you

  1992. know

  1993. Jesus

  1994. went

  1995. to

  1996. provide

  1997. many

  1998. rooms

  1999. for

  2000. us

  2001. in

  2002. his

  2003. mansion

  2004. there

  2005. there

  2006. is

  2007. a

  2008. place

  2009. that

  2010. we

  2011. live

  2012. but

  2013. the

  2014. key

  2015. to

  2016. it

  2017. is

  2018. not

  2019. the

  2020. land

  2021. that

  2022. we

  2023. get

  2024. but

  2025. the

  2026. person

  2027. around

  2028. whom

  2029. we

  2030. are

  2031. centered

  2032. it

  2033. is

  2034. God

  2035. himself

  2036. who

  2037. is

  2038. the

  2039. center

  2040. and

  2041. God

  2042. the

  2043. of

  2044. Levi

  2045. around

  2046. you

  2047. your

  2048. inheritance

  2049. will

  2050. be

  2051. me

  2052. and

  2053. my

  2054. provision

  2055. and

  2056. my

  2057. presence

  2058. among

  2059. you

  2060. that

  2061. is

  2062. picturing

  2063. what

  2064. is

  2065. to

  2066. come

  2067. for

  2068. the

  2069. people

  2070. of

  2071. God

  2072. and

  2073. so

  2074. again

  2075. looking

  2076. at

  2077. the

  2078. book

  2079. of

  2080. chapter

  2081. 9

  2082. verses

  2083. 11

  2084. through

  2085. 15

  2086. when

  2087. Christ

  2088. appeared

  2089. as a

  2090. high

  2091. priest

  2092. of

  2093. the

  2094. good

  2095. things

  2096. that

  2097. have

  2098. come

  2099. then

  2100. through

2101. the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is not of this creation,

2102. He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves,

2103. but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and

2104. bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer sanctified for the

2105. purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit

2106. offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our consciences from dead works to serve the living

2107. God. And then listen to this verse, therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who

2108. are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that

2109. redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. Now again, there's far

2110. more in that passage than I'm going to unpack this morning, but do you see the resonance again and

2111. again and again of how the Old Testament sacrificial system and the role of the priests and the role of

2112. the sacrifices are all pointing to Christ in different ways? Here I want to focus on this last verse 15

2113. where it says, therefore He is a mediator of a new covenant, so those who are called may receive the

2114. promised eternal inheritance. Friends, this is what our great high priest has done. He has secured for us

2115. by being the high priest who has entered into the throne room of God, offering Himself in our place

2116. so that we no longer face judgment, but rather welcome and acceptance because our sins are atoned for.

2117. As we come into that, our inheritance is God Himself.

2118. And with God, the richness of everything that comes with being God's people in God's kingdom.

2119. Right? And we know that right now, as the church, we're not experiencing the fullness of that

2120. in all of it yet, and yet we do have the most important part, don't we?

2121. We don't have the fullness of God's kingdom in all of its riches and all of its glory where

2122. justice will reign and where righteousness is ascendant and where there's no more sin and no more sorrow

2123. and no more death in the world. We don't live in that world, but we do live in a world where even now

2124. we can have God as our inheritance.

2125. Because through faith in Christ, we are now His, and He calls us His children.

2126. And all that He is, then, He gives to us the riches of His kingdom, the joy of knowing Him,

2127. the freedom from guilt and shame, the hope of eternal life, the purpose of living for His glory

2128. and His righteousness every day on this earth. And all that we do, the riches of His kingdom,

2129. right, are not counted in our bank accounts or in our deeds or in our trophy cases or in all the

2130. other things that maybe we wish they would be. But we have an inheritance that's better than that

2131. of God Himself. And so, friends, we are not fearful outsiders because of our great high priest.

2132. These high priests, this priesthood in the Old Testament pictured the reality of where we are,

2133. but Christ has come and fulfilled so much so that now we may be able to approach God with great

2134. confidence, that we may have an inheritance that is kept for us in heaven as 1 Peter writes,

2135. that is imperishable and undefiled, waiting for us. And even though we don't have all of that now,

2136. we do have the joy of knowing Christ and knowing God Himself, and He is our inheritance. And so,

2137. this is then the priesthood, friends, a priesthood that brings us much blessing and great joy.

2138. Because we have in this priest abundant life. We have in this priest access to God, and in this

2139. priest a certain inheritance that is worth all of our lives. So, let me pray as we close. Lord,

2140. thank You for this Word, and thank You for Jesus, our great high priest who has gone before us to secure

2141. all of these things. And Lord, that Your call is that by faith we may know You. Lord, I pray this morning

2142. that if we are struggling, struggling with fear because we don't know if we can approach You,

2143. or struggling with doubt, Lord, that what You have done for us is truly good. Lord, I pray this morning

2144. that as we gaze upon Christ, we would be renewed in faith, that we'd be strengthened in belief,

2145. and that our hope would be encouraged and emboldened as we think of Christ, our great high priest.

2146. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
