  1. Well, again, I want to say good morning. It's good to have you here.

  2. And I want to just remind you, as Tom said earlier, if you are feeling hot and need to get up,

  3. move to a different zone so you can feel a fan or go downstairs and continue to engage in our service

  4. on the live stream in the air conditioning, please feel free to do that.

  5. In great stories, there are always inflection points.

  6. And if you are particularly a teen here and you want to read these books,

  7. you may want to plug your ears because I'm about to give you spoilers, okay?

  8. Obi-Wan falls to the lightsaber of Darth Vader in the Death Star at the end of the original New Hope.

  9. Dumbledore, okay, have you plugged your ears?

  10. All right, so Dumbledore meets his fate at the top of the Astronomy Tower in Hogwarts.

  11. And in the minds of Moria, again, if you haven't read The Lord of the Rings, plug your ears,

  12. Gandalf falls into the abyss at the bridge of Khazad-dûm.

  13. And in each of these situations, the main characters, Luke, Skywalker, Harry Potter,

  14. Frodo Baggins, and the company ask the question, how do we go on?

  15. Where do we need to look for help, for leadership, for guidance?

  16. During the…in these inflection points, in these turning points,

  17. they feel fear, confusion, and uncertainty about how to go forward.

  18. In the journey of our life, we may also come to inflection points along the way.

  19. It might be starting a new job or having a promotion, a new company.

  20. It might be heading off to junior high or high school coming up this fall.

  21. Maybe that you're getting married or having a baby or having another baby.

  22. All of these are inflection points in our lives.

  23. Perhaps you've suffered great loss.

  24. Maybe a loved one or even a pet or a job or a hope.

  25. They cause the same feelings in us.

  26. Confusion, fear, uncertainty.

  27. How do we move forward?

  28. What would God want us to know about Himself in these moments?

  29. This is what brings us to our passage today.

  30. We'll be looking at Numbers chapter 20.

    Numbers 20 chapter mention

  31. This summer, we are preaching through the book of Numbers in the Old Testament.

  32. If you're looking at the Pew Bible, that's page 119 in the Pew Bibles or around there.

  33. We're looking.

  34. And as we go through, you will see we're going to focus particularly on the narrative story

  35. in verses 2 through 13 this morning.

  36. So we're not going to teach through the whole chapter.

  37. We're just going to focus on that story.

  38. But if you haven't been here or just to remind us of where we are in the whole Bible, right?

  39. Numbers is the book about God leading His people on a journey through the wilderness.

  40. God had in the book of Exodus delivered His people from Egypt, brought them to Mount Sinai,

  41. revealed Himself with great signs and wonders.

  42. And they camped there as they received the law and began to learn what it meant to be God's people.

  43. The book of Numbers begins as the people set out from the Mount of Sinai,

  44. heading towards the promised land that God would promise to take them into.

  45. But despite all of God's great signs of faithfulness to them,

  46. the people struggled and failed to trust and believe God in this journey through the wilderness.

  47. They complained about food and about water.

  48. They rebelled against God's leaders.

  49. In Numbers 13, they came to the brink of the promised land,

  50. and they went in and spied it out.

  51. And they came back and they said,

  52. There's no way God can help us.

  53. We're afraid.

  54. We don't want to do this.

  55. And so God in His judgment said,

  56. If that's how you feel, fine.

  57. My judgment is that this generation will not enter in to the promised land.

  58. But your faithfulness, faithlessness, will not deter my faithfulness.

  59. So the next generation I will take in.

  60. So you are now going to wander in the wilderness for 40 years.

  61. And in that time, He reaffirmed His appointment of the leadership of Moses and Aaron in the priesthood.

  62. And He asked them again and again to trust Him.

  63. To believe in His saving purposes.

  64. That God will deliver us from our enemies.

  65. To trust in His provision.

  66. That God will give us the things that we need.

  67. Manna and water.

  68. That God, He calls us to live with hope in His promises.

  69. That what God has said He will do.

  70. He will bring it to completion.

  71. When we come to Numbers 20 then, it's a turning point.

  72. Because suddenly, we are 40 years ahead.

  73. Right?

  74. The generation that was condemned for not believing God and going into the promised land.

  75. Had pretty much died out.

  76. And the new generation had raised up.

  77. And you see this in a number of different ways.

  78. You see this new place coming up.

  79. You see that there's an inflection point in the leadership.

  80. Right?

  81. Chapter 20 begins in verse 1 with the death of Miriam.

  82. Remember, Miriam was the prophetess.

  83. The sister of Aaron and Moses.

  84. Who helped lead the people and praise the Lord.

  85. Right?

  86. And we see at the end of the chapter that Aaron too.

  87. His death is recorded in this.

  88. And the passing on of the high priesthood to a new generation.

  89. To his son, Eleazar.

  90. And it's even an inflection point in the travel plans.

  91. Because they're still thinking they're going to go to the promised land.

  92. And in verses 14 through 21, they try to go through Edom.

  93. And Edom says, no thanks.

  94. We don't want your people walking through our land.

  95. And so God redirects them to go south and around the long way.

  96. So that God can show his faithfulness to them.

  97. So there's your outline for the whole chapter.

  98. If you missed it, you can go back and watch it on the video.

  99. So, but the central narrative in this is verses 2 through 13.

  100. So we're going to look at that today.

  101. We're going to read it.

  102. And we're going to explore it.

  103. So if you want to read with me, Numbers chapter 20, verses 2 through 13.

    Numbers 20:2–13

  104. Numbers 20, verse 2.

    Numbers 20:2

  105. Now there was no water for the congregation.

  106. And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

  107. And the people quarreled with Moses and said,

  108. Would that we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord.

  109. Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness?

  110. That we should die here, both we and our cattle.

  111. And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place?

  112. It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates.

  113. And there is no water to drink.

  114. Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting

  115. and fell on their faces.

  116. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

  117. And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,

  118. Take the staff and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron, your brother,

  119. and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water.

  120. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them

  121. and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.

  122. And Moses took the staff from before the Lord as he commanded him.

  123. Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock.

  124. And he said to them,

  125. Hear now, you rebels!

  126. Shall we bring water for you out of this rock?

  127. And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice.

  128. And water came out abundantly.

  129. And the congregation drank and their livestock.

  130. And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

  131. Because you did not believe in me to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel,

  132. therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.

  133. These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord.

  134. And through them he showed himself holy.

  135. Let's pray and ask for God's help as we look at his word today.

  136. Lord, thank you for this word.

  137. Thank you for this morning that we can gather together.

  138. And we pray for your help as we look at this.

  139. Lord, help us to understand your word.

  140. Lord, help us to not only understand it,

  141. but Lord, make our hearts ready to receive it and to submit to it.

  142. Search our hearts.

  143. Lord, show us if there be any wicked way in us,

  144. and lead us in the ways of everlasting.

  145. Lord, be my help.

  146. Help me to speak as I ought to this morning,

  147. that your truth may be clear.

  148. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  149. Amen.

  150. Amen.

  151. Amen.

  152. So we're going to recount the story

  153. so that we can pull out some of the details

  154. and see it for all that we can see in it.

  155. And then we're going to ask three questions at the end.

  156. So if you're making an outline,

  157. that's what we're going to do.

  158. So the story comes in four movements, right?

  159. In verses 2 through 5,

  160. the new people, the new generation, complain.

  161. Now remember, they are thinking, potentially,

  162. the old guard, they got judged,

  163. but we're now expecting blessing.

  164. And so here they go,

  165. and the first thing that happens to them is,

  166. there is no water.

  167. And this is not merely them overlooking something that was untrue.

  168. It's not that they misperceived the situation.

  169. The narrator himself says,

  170. there was no water.

  171. The question was, how would they respond to that?

  172. Well, they complained.

  173. Just like the earlier generation did,

  174. they complained.

  175. They were faithless.

  176. They were accusatory of Moses and Aaron.

  177. Why did you lead us out here to die?

  178. It's interesting.

  179. They even say, we wish we were like our brothers,

  180. the brothers who were the rebels

  181. who were swallowed up by the earth.

  182. We wish that we would die instantaneously like them

  183. rather than dying by starvation in the wilderness.

  184. It's a pretty ugly picture of the people of God.

  185. The second movement in this story is God's response.

  186. In verses 6 through 8,

  187. Moses and Aaron receive this.

  188. They take it to the Lord,

  189. and the Lord gives them instructions.

  190. And it's so interesting, is it not?

  191. Though in some of the other places,

  192. God would have said,

  193. these people are worthless and faithless,

  194. and I'm going to judge them

  195. and wipe them off of the face of the earth.

  196. And then Moses and Aaron step in and say,

  197. no, God, you have to keep your people to,

  198. because you want, you have to keep your promises.

  199. And then God relents,

  200. and it goes on from here.

  201. Here, you don't see any word at all of condemnation.

  202. Right?

  203. Look with me again at verse 7.

  204. What does he say?

  205. Where'd it go?

  206. The Lord spoke and said,

  207. he just said,

  208. take the staff and assemble the congregation.

  209. His goal is to provide for the people.

  210. Right?

  211. He gives Moses and Aaron particularly three instructions.

  212. He said, go get the staff.

  213. And what is the staff?

  214. It's particularly here,

  215. the staff of Aaron that they had,

  216. if you go back and you have to listen to the sermon

  217. from a couple weeks ago on Aaron's staff,

  218. signifying that the priesthood was meant to be

  219. a life-giving blessing to the people of God.

  220. It was a signal of God's authority to these leaders,

  221. but it was a signal of God's desire

  222. to bless his people through their leadership.

  223. So go get the staff from the tent of meeting.

  224. Get it from its special place in the Holy of Holies.

  225. Second thing, assemble the people.

  226. And it's really interesting.

  227. If you look carefully,

  228. there are two different words through this passage.

  229. One is assembly and one is congregation.

  230. And God uses the word congregation,

  231. typically, in a neutral or positive sense

  232. to talk about the unified people of God.

  233. But he uses the word assembly often

  234. with the connotation of,

  235. these are the people who are rebelling against me.

  236. So when in verse 7,

  237. God says,

  238. go assemble the congregation,

  239. he's saying,

  240. pull the people together before me.

  241. Right?

  242. And then the third thing is,

  243. he says,

  244. speak to the rock

  245. so that it will yield the water.

  246. And God's promise is,

  247. when you do these things,

  248. the water will give rock,

  249. sorry,

  250. the rock will give water

  251. to all the people.

  252. Not only to all the people,

  253. but all the livestock.

  254. It's not just a trickle.

  255. It's a gush.

  256. It's a torrent.

  257. It's a waterfall

  258. to feed all these hundreds of thousands of people

  259. and their livestock.

  260. So God promises.

  261. He instructs his leaders to do things

  262. with the promise that God is going to provide

  263. for the people through them.

  264. The third movement,

  265. in verses 9 through 11,

  266. Moses and Aaron's surprising leadership.

  267. This is very interesting.

  268. The ESV does not help us

  269. by putting a paragraph break

  270. between verses 9 and 10

  271. and a new title.

  272. Okay?

  273. So I want you to try to erase that from your brain

  274. if you're looking at your Bible.

  275. And just because in verse 9,

  276. right,

  277. it says Moses heard God

  278. and he went

  279. and he took the staff

  280. out of the tent of meeting

  281. as the Lord commanded him.

  282. Now,

  283. as the Lord commanded him

  284. feels a little early,

  285. doesn't it?

  286. God gave him three instructions

  287. and Moses did one of them.

  288. Right?

  289. So there's partial obedience.

  290. But then what do you see in the rest of it?

  291. Is it further obedience?

  292. Well,

  293. he gathers the people,

  294. but again,

  295. verse 10 says,

  296. he gathered the assembly,

  297. which is an indication perhaps

  298. in the narrative

  299. of something slightly off,

  300. and his tone.

  301. I tried to get it

  302. when I was reading it earlier.

  303. He says,

  304. you rebels.

  305. Right?

  306. which is the word used

  307. in chapter 16

  308. for Korah and his followers

  309. when they rose up

  310. against the leadership

  311. and God brought great judgment

  312. on them.

  313. He treated them

  314. as worthy of judgment.

  315. And he didn't say,

  316. God has promised

  317. to provide for you.

  318. He said,

  319. should you?

  320. Should I bring water

  321. out of the rock for you?

  322. The implication,

  323. I think,

  324. is that he,

  325. Moses was thinking,

  326. these people are not deserving.

  327. These people don't deserve

  328. God's grace.

  329. They don't deserve

  330. God's provision.

  331. And then the third thing he does

  332. is he strikes the rock.

  333. He lifts up his hand.

  334. He strikes the rock.

  335. He strikes it twice.

  336. He lifts up his hand.

  337. And the water gushes forth.

  338. And God is faithful

  339. and God provides the water

  340. for the people.

  341. We're going to come back

  342. and explore this a little bit

  343. because it's the first question.

  344. Right?

  345. So,

  346. the fourth movement

  347. in the story is

  348. because it feels like,

  349. hey,

  350. this is great.

  351. God has

  352. totally provided

  353. and this is wonderful

  354. and let's go on

  355. into the promised land.

  356. Verse 12,

  357. God's judgment

  358. and vindication.

  359. Right?

  360. Verses 12 and 13,

  361. water does come

  362. from the rock,

  363. but Moses and Aaron

  364. are condemned.

  365. Why?

  366. For two reasons.

  367. The text is clear.

  368. The first one is,

  369. you did not believe in me.

  370. That is,

  371. you did not trust me.

  372. You did not trust my words.

  373. Secondly,

  374. you did not,

  375. what's the phrase

  376. that he uses particularly?

  377. Uphold me as holy

  378. in the eyes

  379. of the people of Israel.

  380. You did not represent me

  381. as I truly am

  382. in my heart

  383. for these people

  384. accurately.

  385. You showed that

  386. through your disobedience

  387. and you showed that

  388. through your attitude.

  389. And God gave

  390. the people water,

  391. but there's a word

  392. of rebuke

  393. and condemnation

  394. and consequence

  395. for Moses and Aaron.

  396. They would not see

  397. the promised land

  398. that this generation would.

  399. Okay.

  400. So that's the story.

  401. I've tried to pull out

  402. some of the details.

  403. Let's talk about

  404. the implications of it.

  405. Three questions.

  406. The first one is,

  407. why was Moses and Aaron's

  408. sin so significant?

  409. And I put Moses and Aaron together

  410. because as you go

  411. through the story,

  412. it's actually a little bit confusing

  413. because it moves

  414. from singular to plural

  415. and back and forth

  416. between just talking

  417. about Moses

  418. and talking about

  419. Moses and Aaron.

  420. And when you look

  421. at verse 12,

  422. when you see the judgment

  423. on them,

  424. it's on both of them.

  425. And so I'm going to use

  426. plural broadly

  427. even though the text

  428. goes back and forth

  429. between Moses did this

  430. and it doesn't specify

  431. that Aaron did this.

  432. The idea is that

  433. they were doing this together

  434. is what we see, right?

  435. But why was it

  436. such a big deal?

  437. It kind of seems harsh

  438. on a first read.

  439. Like, seriously God?

  440. They just,

  441. they kind of misstepped

  442. on a few of the details

  443. and you like,

  444. nope,

  445. you can't see

  446. the promised land?

  447. That's a terrible,

  448. that seems really harsh,

  449. doesn't it?

  450. Well, it does

  451. until you see this

  452. in the context

  453. of the book

  454. and understand

  455. a few details

  456. that are really important.

  457. The first thing is

  458. Moses and Aaron

  459. were given particular roles.

  460. If you go back and read,

  461. if you remember

  462. what we've seen

  463. in Numbers 11 through 20,

  464. God keeps propping them up.

  465. Moses is the prophet.

  466. He is the anointed one

  467. that I have set aside

  468. to lead these people

  469. into the promised land.

  470. He is to represent me

  471. and He is to represent

  472. the people to me.

  473. So Moses has this unique role

  474. as a mediator

  475. and Aaron is held up

  476. in chapters 16 through 19,

  477. particularly in chapters 16 and 17.

  478. Aaron is held up

  479. as the high priest,

  480. the one who goes

  481. into the Holy of Holies

  482. to make the sacrifices,

  483. to atone for the sins

  484. of the people.

  485. So these two people

  486. had a unique role

  487. in the people of God

  488. at the time.

  489. And God gave them staffs.

  490. And I'm going to say

  491. two of them

  492. because this is kind of important,

  493. right?

  494. Each of them had a staff

  495. that symbolized

  496. their authority.

  497. And I went back and looked

  498. and I'll tell you,

  499. I just want to be clear.

  500. The writer isn't always clear

  501. on which staff

  502. is which staff,

  503. okay?

  504. But here we go,

  505. right?

  506. The staff of Moses,

  507. the staff that he used

  508. as he raised up

  509. to part the Red Sea,

  510. right?

  511. The staff that he used

  512. to strike the rock

  513. in Exodus 17

  514. to bring water

  515. the first time

  516. and when the first generation

  517. complained,

  518. right?

  519. This is the staff of Moses.

  520. But remember,

  521. the staff of Aaron,

  522. now the staff of Aaron

  523. was also used

  524. back in the judgments

  525. on Egypt.

  526. It was a time

  527. when Aaron would raise up

  528. his staff

  529. to be a part

  530. of what God would do.

  531. So again,

  532. there's a bit of intermingling,

  533. but they are two distinct staffs.

  534. And at this point

  535. in Numbers 20,

  536. as I said,

  537. Aaron's staff

  538. has been put away

  539. in the innermost place

  540. where God's presence

  541. dwells among his people

  542. to be a testimony

  543. of his faithfulness

  544. and his desire to provide.

  545. So God tells them,

  546. go get that staff

  547. so that you can hold it up,

  548. not to strike the rock,

  549. but to hold it up

  550. to remind the people

  551. that your leadership

  552. is meant to be a blessing.

  553. And they do that.

  554. But then in verse 11,

  555. it says,

  556. Moses took his staff

  557. and struck the rock.

  558. not Aaron's staff.

  559. Now,

  560. we could have

  561. a really good row

  562. about the Hebrew particles

  563. and whether this is

  564. really a distinction or not,

  565. but this was helpful for me

  566. that it specified

  567. it's Moses' staff

  568. that he takes

  569. to strike the rock

  570. because it shows

  571. how far he had gone

  572. in disregarding

  573. God's command.

  574. because the point

  575. of getting Aaron's staff

  576. was to hold up

  577. this sign of authority.

  578. But Moses said,

  579. no, I'm going to do this.

  580. I'm going to get

  581. my own staff

  582. and struck the rock.

  583. Right?

  584. And so,

  585. and part of this

  586. is because it subverted

  587. God's plan for this.

  588. Because in this inflection point,

  589. Moses has been

  590. with the people

  591. leading them,

  592. but he's not going to be

  593. with this new generation forever.

  594. At some point,

  595. he's going to die.

  596. And what is going to continue

  597. to lead and instruct

  598. the people of God?

  599. Interestingly,

  600. not another prophet

  601. like Moses,

  602. but the words of Moses

  603. written down in the law.

  604. And so,

  605. God is using this.

  606. The command to speak

  607. is trying to signify

  608. a transition

  609. that God wants to happen

  610. among his people,

  611. that it will not be

  612. the person of Moses,

  613. but the words of Moses

  614. that will be their instruction.

  615. And so,

  616. when Moses subverts this

  617. by striking the rock

  618. and putting himself back in,

  619. again,

  620. the implications of it

  621. are much greater.

  622. And in all of this,

  623. they misrepresented

  624. the heart of God.

  625. God came to this

  626. undeserving people

  627. who were complaining

  628. just like the old generation

  629. complained,

  630. and was clear

  631. that his purpose

  632. was to bless them,

  633. not because they deserved it,

  634. but because he was

  635. a gracious God

  636. who would provide

  637. for his people.

  638. And they subverted that.

  639. And they didn't represent God

  640. as he truly was,

  641. but instead thought,

  642. God,

  643. these people are people

  644. you should judge

  645. just like you judge

  646. those other people,

  647. and treated them

  648. as in that way.

  649. And because of this,

  650. then,

  651. this is the reason

  652. why there was

  653. a great judgment

  654. upon them,

  655. why they would not

  656. enter into the promised land

  657. with this new generation,

  658. because they failed

  659. in this unique role

  660. that God had given them

  661. to represent him.

  662. And that is a great loss,

  663. because this whole story

  664. in this inflection point

  665. is for God

  666. to show the new generation

  667. more about who he is,

  668. and they distorted that.

  669. Now,

  670. before we move on,

  671. I want to just think briefly.

  672. Application for us.

  673. The church is called

  674. the New Testament

  675. people of God,

  676. a kingdom of priests

  677. and a holy nation,

  678. that we are meant

  679. to represent Christ

  680. in the world.

  681. That's why we're called Christians,

  682. because we represent Christ.

  683. If we claim

  684. to be the people of God,

  685. do we take it seriously

  686. that all of our actions,

  687. all of our words,

  688. all of our stewardship

  689. of life

  690. are meant to represent

  691. the character of God?

  692. More specifically,

  693. do we obey God

  694. in the specifics

  695. of what he has commanded us

  696. in the New Testament,

  697. not just do the ones

  698. that we agree with

  699. or like?

  700. When we do obey,

  701. do we believe

  702. that God will show

  703. his glory

  704. through our obedience?

  705. Or do we obey

  706. with doubt

  707. and fear

  708. of consequences?

  709. Do we believe

  710. believe that God

  711. will provide for us?

  712. Or do we grumble

  713. and complain?

  714. Do we,

  715. like Moses and Aaron,

  716. take up a part of God

  717. and represent that

  718. to the people

  719. without representing

  720. the fullness

  721. of who he is?

  722. some reflections

  723. for us

  724. as God's people.

  725. The story goes on

  726. because the purpose

  727. of this story

  728. is not to focus

  729. on their sin,

  730. but it's so that

  731. we can see God.

  732. Did you notice

  733. in verse 6,

  734. Aaron and Moses

  735. turned to the tent

  736. of meeting

  737. and went there

  738. and the glory

  739. of the Lord

  740. appeared,

  741. right?

  742. Now,

  743. this happens

  744. because that's

  745. where he dwells

  746. and when he shows up

  747. to speak,

  748. his glory…

  749. So,

  750. at some point,

  751. it's very…

  752. But it's also

  753. right in the central…

  754. center part

  755. of the story

  756. that the glory

  757. of the Lord

  758. appears.

  759. So,

  760. the second question

  761. I want to ask is,

  762. what does this story

  763. tell us about God?

  764. And you've probably…

  765. You've heard this already.

  766. God wanted to show

  767. himself faithful again

  768. to this new generation,

  769. right?

  770. Just like to the old generation

  771. who he gave manna

  772. in the wilderness

  773. and he gave water

  774. from the rock.

  775. He wants to say…

  776. show the same thing

  777. to this.

  778. He wants to show himself

  779. to be the Lord

  780. who announced himself

  781. on Mount Sinai

  782. to Moses

  783. when Moses said,

  784. tell me who you are,

  785. let me see your glory.

  786. And the Lord

  787. passed by him

  788. and said,

  789. the Lord,

  790. the Lord,

  791. a God merciful

  792. and gracious,

  793. slow to anger

  794. and abounding

  795. in steadfast love

  796. and faithfulness,

  797. keeping steadfast love

  798. for thousands,

  799. forgiving iniquity

  800. and transgression

  801. and sin.

  802. this is what the Lord

  803. wants us to know

  804. about him.

  805. Yes, he is holy.

  806. Yes, he will judge sin.

  807. But at the end of the day,

  808. he will do that

  809. as a God

  810. who is merciful

  811. and gracious

  812. and whose redemptive plan

  813. is to rescue people

  814. from that right judgment

  815. by his own work.

  816. He showed this

  817. to the people

  818. through providing them water

  819. even though their leaders

  820. sinned against him.

  821. Right?

  822. God didn't blink.

  823. God didn't stop

  824. Aaron and Moses

  825. in the middle

  826. and say,

  827. whoa, whoa, whoa,

  828. you guys got it wrong,

  829. so sorry,

  830. no water.

  831. He said,

  832. the water came out

  833. and it was so abundant

  834. it gushed out.

  835. And this water

  836. is a reminder

  837. that he would provide

  838. for them

  839. in all things

  840. along the way.

  841. And we'll see this

  842. as we go along.

  843. He will provide

  844. military victories

  845. that they shouldn't be winning.

  846. He will provide food

  847. and allies

  848. when they don't deserve it.

  849. But all of this

  850. is a down payment

  851. of the promises

  852. that he will ultimately fulfill,

  853. meeting not just

  854. our physical needs

  855. but our spiritual needs.

  856. Look at me at verse 13.

  857. It's so striking here.

  858. It says,

  859. these are the waters

  860. of Meribah

  861. where the people of Israel

  862. quarreled with the Lord.

  863. Right?

  864. This is the second Meribah.

  865. The first one

  866. is mentioned

  867. in Exodus 17.

  868. Right?

  869. But in that context,

  870. what did God do?

  871. Through them,

  872. through the very people

  873. who quarreled

  874. against him,

  875. he showed himself holy.

  876. He showed himself

  877. as a God

  878. like no other.

  879. He showed himself

  880. to be the Lord,

  881. merciful and gracious,

  882. slow to anger

  883. and abounding

  884. in steadfast love.

  885. That's exactly

  886. what he did

  887. in this story.

  888. He displayed his glory.

  889. And this,

  890. it's exactly

  891. what he wanted

  892. Moses and Aaron

  893. to do

  894. when they failed

  895. to do it.

  896. And God said,

  897. I don't care

  898. if you fail,

  899. I'm going to do it anyway

  900. so that this new generation

  901. in this inflection point

  902. will know

  903. that this is the kind of God

  904. that I am.

  905. I am the God

  906. who graciously provides.

  907. I am the one

  908. who brings water

  909. out of rocks.

  910. I am the one

  911. who will provide

  912. for you new leaders

  913. in the new generation

  914. when Aaron and Moses

  915. and Miriam are gone.

  916. I will take you

  917. into the land

  918. that I have given

  919. to you.

  920. I am your God.

  921. Friends,

  922. when we're facing

  923. inflection points

  924. in our lives,

  925. we need to gaze

  926. upon this God.

  927. We need to remember

  928. what He is like.

  929. We need to recognize

  930. how prone we are

  931. to grumble

  932. and complain,

  933. to see difficult circumstances

  934. and think that God

  935. has abandoned us

  936. in them

  937. when in fact

  938. He was always there

  939. and He is ready

  940. to show Himself

  941. faithful in the midst of it.

  942. and in transition,

  943. how easily it is

  944. for us to forget

  945. what God has done

  946. and look ahead

  947. with fear and anxiety

  948. rather than

  949. with hopeful faith.

  950. So that's the second question.

  951. What do we see

  952. about God in this?

  953. And then the third one is,

  954. what does this mean

  955. for us today?

  956. How are we to live

  957. in light of this passage?

  958. Remember what we read earlier,

  959. what Carolyn read

  960. from 1 Corinthians 10.

  961. These stories are given

  962. to us for our good.

  963. Specifically,

  964. did you hear

  965. how it was mentioned?

  966. I'm just going to re-read

  967. the first beginning,

  968. the first few verses again.

  969. Paul writes this,

  970. 1 Corinthians 10,

  971. 1 through 4.

  972. I do not want you

  973. to be unaware,

  974. brothers and sisters,

  975. that our fathers

  976. were all buried,

  977. were all under the cloud

  978. and all passed through the sea

  979. and all were baptized

  980. into Moses,

  981. into the cloud

  982. and in the sea

  983. and all ate

  984. the same spiritual food

  985. and all drank

  986. the same spiritual drink.

  987. For they drank

  988. from the spiritual rock

  989. that followed them

  990. and the rock

  991. was Christ.

  992. Do you see how

  993. the New Testament,

  994. I'm not just making it up

  995. that this story

  996. about some water

  997. in the desert,

  998. is pointing to

  999. our salvation.

  1000. The New Testament

  1001. tells us that.

  1002. It tells us that

1003. this rock is a picture.

  1004. It is an image

  1005. to help us understand

  1006. what God has done

  1007. in Jesus Christ.

  1008. That in Jesus,

  1009. in His life

  1010. and His death

  1011. and His resurrection,

  1012. He has achieved

1013. victory over sin and death

1014. so that He might be

  1015. the one

  1016. who comes to be

  1017. the bringer of life.

1018. We who are in our sins

  1019. spiritually a wasteland

  1020. and a desert

  1021. without hope

  1022. and without any ability

  1023. to bring spiritual life

  1024. to ourselves,

  1025. God comes

1026. and brings it to us

  1027. from the outside

  1028. making us born again,

1029. having a new spiritual life

  1030. that wells up

1031. like the water from a rock

  1032. wells up in us

1033. when we place our faith

  1034. in Jesus.

1035. Christ is the rock for us

  1036. and this is what

  1037. this passage tells us.

  1038. And if we wonder

1039. if God is going to be faithful

  1040. in the circumstances

  1041. of our lives

  1042. and the inflection points

  1043. of our lives,

1044. the New Testament reminds us

1045. to look at the cross,

1046. look at the empty tomb,

  1047. remember who Jesus is

1048. and know this is where

  1049. we find life

  1050. and this is where

  1051. we find hope

  1052. and this is where

  1053. we know that God

1054. will be faithful to us.

1055. And even in the most

  1056. difficult circumstances,

1057. He is ready to show Himself

  1058. faithful when we despair

1059. and when we feel like

  1060. we're in the wilderness

  1061. and when we're tempted

1062. to complain or give up.

  1063. Jesus invites us

  1064. in this passage

  1065. to come to Him

1066. and find a spiritual life

  1067. in Him.

1068. And for those of us

  1069. who have known Him,

  1070. we are reminded again

  1071. in Hebrews 12

1072. of how to follow Him.

  1073. Hebrews 12, 1-3 says this,

  1074. since we are surrounded

1075. by so great a cloud

  1076. of witnesses,

1077. let us also lay aside

  1078. every weight and sin

  1079. which clings so closely

1080. and let us run with endurance

1081. the race that is set before us,

  1082. looking to Jesus,

  1083. the founder and perfecter

  1084. of our faith,

  1085. who for the joy

1086. that was set before Him

  1087. endured the cross,

  1088. despising the shame,

  1089. and is seated

  1090. at the right hand

1091. of the throne of God.

  1092. Consider Him

  1093. who endured from sinners

  1094. such hostility

  1095. against Himself

1096. so that you may not

  1097. grow weary

  1098. or faint-hearted.

  1099. Friends, as God's people,

1100. we are to lay aside

  1101. our sin.

1102. We are to lay aside

  1103. the things

1104. that so easily distract us

  1105. from seeing Christ alone

  1106. as the place

  1107. where we find

  1108. real, true life,

  1109. eternal life with God.

1110. And the writer of the Hebrews

  1111. exhorts us,

1112. fix our eyes on Him.

  1113. People often ask me,

  1114. how do I live

  1115. the Christian life?

1116. How do I do this?

  1117. How do I grow

  1118. in godliness?

  1119. How do I…

  1120. And I…

  1121. And there are lots

  1122. of techniques,

1123. there are lots of things

  1124. for us to learn,

  1125. but friends,

  1126. at some level,

  1127. it's this hard

  1128. and this simple.

  1129. Fix your eyes

  1130. on Jesus.

  1131. That means reading

  1132. God's Word.

  1133. That means attending church.

  1134. That means finding

  1135. fellow brothers and sisters

1136. who you can have fellowship with

1137. to talk about Christ together,

  1138. to remember His goodness

  1139. and His faithfulness

  1140. and His character

1141. as He's shown it to you

  1142. in your life

1143. and as He's shown it

  1144. revealed in His Word

1145. so that we can look to Jesus

1146. because He is both the founder,

1147. the beginning of our faith

1148. and the one who will bring us

  1149. through this journey

  1150. in the wilderness

  1151. to the promised land.

  1152. He is the one

  1153. who ultimately

  1154. will take us home

  1155. and one day

  1156. we will be resurrected

  1157. with Him

1158. and we will be taken

  1159. to the new heavens

  1160. and the new earth

  1161. which will be

  1162. the best promised land

1163. that we could ever imagine.

  1164. And now He says,

  1165. it will be hard.

1166. There will be a race to run.

1167. It is through a wilderness.

1168. But fix your eyes on Him

1169. and let Him be the author

1170. and perfecter of your faith.

  1171. So consider Him

  1172. and don't grow weary

1173. as you face inflection points

1174. or even if you're not

1175. in the middle of inflection point,

  1176. maybe you're in a point

  1177. of the most stability

1178. you've ever had in your life.

1179. Fix your eyes on Him.

  1180. Let's pray together.

1181. Lord, thank You for this Word.

1182. Thank You for the way

1183. that it points us to Christ,

  1184. the rock from which
