  1. Well, during this season of Advent, we're working our way

  2. through a series on the oh Auntie Fonz.

  3. Seven ancient prayers that pray for the coming of Jesus using

  4. titles, given to him by the Old Testament.

  5. This morning, we're looking at Jesus as Lord, and so I invite

  6. you to stand for a reading of God's word.

  7. This morning, I'll be reading from to Old Testament.

  8. Passages first from the prophet, Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 11.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  9. And then, from the book of Exodus, Isaiah 11.

  10. Beginning in verse 3, Isaiah writes And as the light shall

  11. be, in the fear of the Lord, You shall not judge by what his

  12. eyes, see, or decide disputes by what his ears here.

  13. But with righteousness, he shall judge the poor and decide with

  14. equity for the meek of the earth.

  15. And he shall strike the Earth with the rod of his mouth.

  16. And with the breath of his lips, he shall kill the wicked

  17. righteousness. Shall be the belt of his waist

  18. and faithfulness the belt of his loins. and now from the book of

  19. Exodus chapter 3, Now Moses was keeping the Flop with his

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  20. father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian and he led his flock

  21. to the west side of the Wilderness and came to Horeb the

  22. Mountain of God and the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a

  23. flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.

  24. He looked and behold the Bush was burning and it was not

  25. consumed. And Moses said, I will turn

  26. aside to see this great sight. Why the bush is not burned.

  27. When the Lord saw that, he turned aside to see God Called

  28. to him out of the bush. Shhhh Moses, Moses and he said,

  29. here, I am then he said, do not come near, take your sandals,

  30. off your feet for the place on which you are standing is Holy

  31. Ground. And he said, I am the god of

  32. your father, the god of Abraham, the god of Isaac, and the god of

  33. Jacob and Moses. Hid his face for, he was afraid

  34. to look at God. Then the Lord said, I have

  35. surely seen the Affliction of my people who are in Egypt and I've

  36. heard there. Prior because of their

  37. taskmasters, I know, their sufferings and I've come down to

  38. deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them

  39. up out of that land to a good and Broad land, a land flowing

  40. with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the

  41. Hittites, the amorites, the perizzites, the hivites, and the

  42. jebusites. And Now, Behold The Cry of the

  43. people of Israel has come to me. And I have seen the oppression

  44. with which the Egyptians oppress them, come, I will send you.

  45. You to Pharaoh that you may bring my people the children of

  46. Israel out of Egypt, but Moses said to God, who am I?

  47. That I should go to pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out

  48. of Egypt. He said, but I will be with you

  49. and this shall be a sign for you that I have sent you and you

  50. have brought the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on

  51. this mountain. Then Moses said to God if I come

  52. to the people of Israel and say to them the god of your father's

  53. has sent me to you and they ask me.

  54. What is his name? What shall I tell them?

  55. Them. God said to Moses, I am who I am

  56. and he said, say this to the people of Israel, I am has sent

  57. me to you. This is the word of the Lord.

  58. You may be seated. In the Book of Romans Apostle,

  59. Paul writes that if you confess with your mouth, that Jesus is

  60. Lord and believe in your heart, that God raised him from the

  61. dead. You will be saved.

  62. Let me read that to you again because it is the most important

  63. thing that we could hear this morning, And the Book of Romans,

  64. the Apostle Paul writes that if you confess with your mouth,

  65. that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that he rose Jesus

  66. from the dead. You will be saved.

  67. From the earliest days of Christianity, one of the most

  68. essential aspects of the Christian faith is the lordship

  69. of Jesus. But what does it really mean to

  70. confess that Jesus is Lord? What we're going to see this

  71. morning is that the lordship of Jesus as more than just a title.

  72. And it's more than just simply his attribute.

  73. But we're going to see is that the lordship of Jesus is his

  74. name. It's the very name of God.

  75. The second prayer of the oh Auntie fawns goes like this.

  76. You can find it in your bulletin, it's there on the

  77. inside cover, it's a prayer to the coming of the Lord.

  78. Oh Lord and leader of the House of Israel, who appeared to Moses

  79. and the fire of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sion.

  80. I come and redeem us with an outstretched arm It's a

  81. beautiful prayer. Its title.

  82. Come O Lord comes from language used by the Old Testament.

  83. In particular, we see this language alluded to by the

  84. prophet Isaiah and Isaiah 11. I want you to look with me at

  85. Isaiah 11, verse 4. And listen to who this Lord God

    Isaiah 11:4

  86. is and what the Messiah will be like, Isaiah 11 for with

  87. righteousness. He will judge the poor and

  88. decide with equity for the meek of the earth.

  89. He will strike. Earth with the rod of his mouth

  90. of the breath of his lips, he shall kill the wicked.

  91. Now, listen to this. Verse 5 righteousness will be

  92. the belt of his waist and faithfulness the belt of his

  93. loins. To say that the Messiah will be

  94. Lord is to say that he is righteous and he is faithful, he

  95. is mighty, and he is merciful. And the story behind this title,

  96. as best told by the story of The Exodus, Exodus chapter 3, It's

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  97. in this story. The story of the burning bush.

  98. And God coming to a man named Moses to make a promise that he

  99. would come down and redeem his peoples in that story that we

  100. see that the same Lord who redeemed his people from Israel

  101. is the same Lord Jesus Christ, who redeems us from our sins.

  102. And so this morning as we look at this second oh antiphon

  103. prayer for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  104. I want you to see what it truly means to confess that Jesus.

  105. The son of God is Lord. First thing I want you to know,

  106. I want you to know that the Lord Is Holy.

  107. I want you to look with me at Exodus 3 verse 1.

    Exodus 3:1

  108. We're told that Moses was keeping the flock of his

  109. father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led this flock

  110. to the west side of the Wilderness and came to Horeb,

  111. that is Mount Sinai. Now, if you've grown up around a

  112. judeo, Christian culture are, you know who Charlton Heston is?

  113. You've probably heard of Moses. And we know Moses and his story.

  114. Gets picked up here in chapter 3, towards the beginning.

  115. But we know the very very beginning of his story is that

  116. he was a Hebrew and Israelite child, who was adopted into

  117. Pharaoh's household and after he killed an Egyptian for attacking

  118. a fellow Hebrew, he fled to Midian.

  119. And here we pick up his story, keeping watch over his flocks

  120. verse 2. And the angel of the Lord

  121. appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush

  122. and Moses looked and behold the Bush was burning yet, it was not

  123. consumed. I want you to try your best to

  124. imagine this in your mind. Here is Moses keeping watch over

  125. his flock. And out of nowhere, the angel of

  126. the Lord comes. Now already that was an amazing

  127. sight. But it came in the form of a

  128. burning bush. A bush that was on fire and yet

  129. it wasn't burning up. It wasn't consumed.

  130. This is one of the most iconic images of the Bible.

  131. The burning bush. a story that has become familiarized to us

  132. not just by bought the Bible, but by popular culture An image,

  133. the burning bush that would have been to become the symbol of the

  134. nation of Israel. A symbol of the fires of

  135. Affliction that they have endured throughout their entire

  136. history. But you see, I think that the

  137. burning bush is not simply an image that should remind us of

  138. Israel as a nation. but the burning bush I think as an image

  139. of God himself, Coming down the fires of judgment.

  140. And yet not to consume his own people.

  141. Book of Deuteronomy tells us that the Lord, our God is a

  142. consuming fire, a jealous God, a God who is mighty and righteous

  143. and holy, And God had come and The Exodus to bring judgment.

  144. But with his judgment he brought Redemption.

  145. And we noticed that here and the burning bush that God bring all

  146. of his Holiness close to a man named Otis.

  147. Now, I want you to notice what it says, look again with me

  148. tells us that the angel of the Lord appeared Now, that word

  149. that phrase is really a title and in the Hebrew, it's best

  150. translated. As the angel of the Lord, not a

  151. angel of the Lord. But the angel of the lord, we

  152. see this title used often throughout the Old Testament.

  153. When we see the very presence of God himself, In fact, the angel

  154. of the Lord could be translated literally as the messenger of

  155. the Lord and for centuries, Christians have wondered whether

  156. or not this was an angel or perhaps this was a christophany

  157. and other words, a a pre-incarnate appearance of

  158. Jesus now whether or not that's true.

  159. What we do know for certain is this this was no mere Angel

  160. because of what happens. Next, look with me at verse 4.

  161. When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see God Called to him

  162. out of the bush. Not the angel of the Lord

  163. anymore but we're told it was God himself.

  164. God is the one who called to Moses out of the Bush and he

  165. says, Moses Moses and Moses answers back.

  166. Here are mine. Now, the word that we see here

  167. in verse 44, God is the word. Lord.

  168. Do you see it? And if you see this word Lord

  169. and you hear this word, Lord used for God, throughout the Old

  170. Testament. There are many people who hear

  171. that word and think of that word and immediately, what they

  172. imagine God to be as cold and archaic.

  173. He's the Lord Are perhaps other people you hear that and you

  174. think of his attributes, his kingship his authority as

  175. Majesty, his sovereignty. But again, what I want you to

  176. see this morning is that the word Lord is so much more than

  177. his attributes. It's a name.

  178. And if you're looking in your Bible or you're looking at your

  179. bullets, and I want you to notice something about that

  180. word. Do you see that?

  181. It's an all capital letters. Lord, if you ever noticed that

  182. before you've ever wondered, why is Lord printed in all caps in

  183. my Bible? Why do we see it that way over

  184. and over and over again in the Old Testament?

  185. Well, the reason is any time that you see the word Lord and

  186. all caps, it's there in the place of the name, yah Yahweh.

  187. It's the Covenant name of God. But you see, for the people of

  188. Israel. They believed that his name was

  189. too holy to say out loud and so instead they used a different

  190. Hebrew word in its place. It's the word Adonai.

  191. It means Lord. And so every time you see the

  192. Lord in all caps, you're not just reading at description

  193. about God. But what you are reading is a

  194. placeholder. Given and reverence for the

  195. Holiness of God. To say that God is Lord, is to

  196. say that he is. Holy he is completely other.

  197. He is righteous and he is just and he is majestic. and we see

  198. that here, And what happens next in verse 5?

  199. That wasn't enough for Moses to see the bush burning and yet not

  200. consumed, and they then hear God's voice.

  201. Call out to him from out of the bush.

  202. Then God says this verse 5 do not come near.

  203. Take your sandals, off your feet for the place on which you are

  204. standing. Is Holy Ground.

  205. It was a common display of reverence to take the shoes off

  206. of your feet when you enter into a holy place.

  207. The Lord is telling Moses this place.

  208. Now, this area around the burning bush, I have claimed, it

  209. is like my temple, it is, Holy Ground. bow down and show

  210. reverence and take the sandals off your feet and he goes on and

  211. says, I am the god of your father, the god of Abraham, the

  212. god of Isaac, the god of Jacob, and then notice what Moses does

  213. We're told that Moses hid his face and was afraid to look at

  214. God. Now again I want you to imagine

  215. everything that Moses just seen a burning bush on fire and yet

  216. not consumed. But what is Moses afraid of?

  217. He's not afraid of this site. He's not afraid of the burning

  218. bush know, he's afraid of the Lord.

  219. Why Because the Lord Is Holy. And when we fully appreciate the

  220. Holiness of the Lord, it should fill us with a holy fear.

  221. For the Bible tells us that the fear of the Lord is the

  222. beginning of wisdom. The fear of the Lord, the

  223. reverence and awe of his holiness.

  224. But again, I want you to notice something about the promise of

  225. the burning bush that God in his holiness.

  226. Came down. And he drew near to Moses god in

  227. his Holiness, came with fire. But he didn't consume the bush.

  228. Because he wasn't going to consume his own people.

  229. God in his Holiness came down, this is what we celebrate at

  230. Advent. And we see it throughout the

  231. story of the Bible. God came to Abraham.

  232. God came to Moses god came to David.

  233. God came to the prophets and God has come to us in Jesus.

  234. This is what we celebrate and it is our hope, the Incarnation of

  235. the son that God has come to us. And he has come in righteousness

  236. and in faithfulness to bring Salvation to his people to the

  237. second thing I want you to know. I want, you know, the Lord is

  238. our savior. Exodus, 3 verse 7, I want you to

    Exodus 3:7

  239. look with me. We're told then the Lord said I

  240. have surely seen the Affliction of my people who are in Egypt, I

  241. have heard their cry because of their taskmasters.

  242. I know, their sufferings, I want you to hear that this morning,

  243. if any of you are suffering of any of your Afflicted, I want

  244. you to hear these words. God knows our sufferings, he

  245. heard the sufferings of his people, their cry for over 400

  246. years for Generations. The people of Israel were

  247. enslaved in Egypt, they were oppressed.

  248. They were beaten, they were subjected to a ruthless

  249. dictator, Exodus 113, you don't have to turn there, just listen.

  250. This is how Exodus begins. So the Egyptians ruthlessly made

  251. the people of Israel work. As slaves.

  252. And made their lives, bitter with hard service, and mortar,

  253. and brick, and all kinds of work.

  254. And the field for 400 years. The people of Israel were

  255. enslaved in Egypt, And the Lord heard their suffering and he

  256. came to a man named Moses to deliver his people out of Egypt.

  257. Exodus 3 verse 8, this is what God says a promise that he gives

    Exodus 3:8

  258. to Moses for his people. I have come down to deliver them

  259. out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of the

  260. land, to a good and Broad land, a land flowing with milk and

  261. honey, and throughout the Bible. All of Redemptive history, The

  262. Exodus becomes these story that captures this great story of

  263. redemption. That just like the people of

  264. Israel were enslaved to Egypt you.

  265. And I, we are enslaved to sin. And just like God, sent a man

  266. named Moses to redeem. His people.

  267. God sent a true and greater Moses.

  268. Jesus. To set us free.

  269. This is the language that Jesus used in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  270. We're told that Jesus said to some Jews who believed in him,

  271. he said if you abide in my word you are truly my disciples and

  272. you will know the truth and the truth will set you free and they

  273. answered him. We are The Offspring of Abraham

  274. have. We've never been enslaved to

  275. anyone? How is it that you say we can

  276. become free. As you hear me talk about the

  277. slavery of the people of Israel and the slavery of our sin.

  278. Maybe you're Wondering the same thing.

  279. Maybe you hear those words either, they just kind of like

  280. inner one here and go out the other because you've heard them

  281. before or if you're really thinking about those words this

  282. morning you're wondering just like these people.

  283. How can we be slaves? We live in the United States of

  284. America, we know nothing but Freedom.

  285. That's what we are built around. How could you say that we are

  286. slaves. And here's the problem.

  287. If you don't recognize. The slavery of sin.

  288. Then you have no need to be set free and if you have no need to

  289. be set free, you have no need for a savior.

  290. And this is how Jesus responded. Jesus said, truly, truly, I say

  291. to you everyone who practices sin.

  292. Is a slave to sin. You see this is what sin does to

  293. us. It corrupts us so much that we

  294. think sin is freedom. Freedom from God's rules.

  295. Freedom for what he would tell us to do in the freedom to

  296. choose our own way. But as we saw last week, there

  297. is a way that seems right to a man that ends in death.

  298. And when we sin we think we are choosing freedom.

  299. But what Jesus is telling us this morning and we are being

  300. reminded of is that sin actually enslaves us.

  301. And this is true. Not just conceptually but

  302. experientially. I want you to think about.

  303. What sin is like in your own life?

  304. And the way that it holds sway over your heart.

  305. How often? After we give into temptation

  306. and we sin, how often it is that we say, I didn't even want to do

  307. that. So why did I do it?

  308. Because we are enslaved to sin. And there is no human being who

  309. can free themselves. We see this in the story of The

  310. Exodus. Again Moses comes to God.

  311. Exodus 3 verse 11. He says, who am I?

    Exodus 3:11

  312. That I should go to pharaoh and bring the children out of Egypt.

  313. That's a great question. Moses isn't just being humble.

  314. He recognizes that there is no one who can do this great task.

  315. Just like there's no one who can free themselves from the slavery

  316. of sin God's response in. Verse 12 is I will be with you

  317. and this will be a sign for you that I have sent you and I have

  318. brought you the people out of Egypt and you shall serve God on

  319. this mountain. It's a promise.

  320. That God will redeem his people. He will free them from slavery.

  321. And brothers and sisters. I want you to hear that same

  322. promise this morning. That once again, God has heard

  323. the cries of our sufferings. And that is what we celebrated

  324. Advent. That and knowing our sufferings,

  325. he sent his son Jesus, to Bear our suffering and sin on the

  326. cross to die in our place and to rise again, to give us victory

  327. over sin so that we could be truly free.

  328. But here's what you have to know.

  329. And the same way that slavery. Feels like freedom, but it's

  330. really just sin. the way of Jesus to us, sometimes feels

  331. Like, it's slavery. The Apostle Paul says, that's

  332. exactly right. And that it is better to be a

  333. servant of Jesus rather than a servant of sin.

  334. In verse 12 of Exodus 3, we see that once God brought his people

  335. out of Egypt, God says, this is the sign that you will serve God

  336. on this mountain. Christopher Walken as a

  337. professor and Scholar of modern and contemporary philosophy and

  338. expert, and post-modernism. And he says that the story of X,

  339. this is really the story of not, just of the Bible, but the story

  340. that any person in our postmodern age would be able to

  341. get behind because it's a story about Freedom.

  342. It's what our age wants the most, we want to be free and

  343. that story makes sense to our age until this last line.

  344. You Shall Serve God on this mountain.

  345. That for our culture says, whoa, wait a minute.

  346. I want to be free, but I don't want to Bow the knee.

  347. Advent. teaches us, once again, that the King has come down to

  348. us, And we haven't been invited by grace and mercy to Bow the

  349. knee and to find Freedom and submitting to the lordship of

  350. Jesus. So, the third and final thing

  351. before we sing, I want you to know the Lord is the one true

  352. God. Exodus 3 verse 13, then Moses

    Exodus 3:13

  353. said to God. If I come to the people of

  354. Israel and say to them the god of your father's has sent me to

  355. you and they ask me. What is his name?

  356. What will I say to them? Now what you need to understand

  357. is that for 400 years, the people of Israel were enslaved

  358. and a polytheistic culture. And so what Moses is asking here

  359. is a pretty basic and fundamental question.

  360. He's asking, which God are you? We've heard about all of these

  361. Egyptian gods for 400 years and so, when the people say well,

  362. which one of these Gods sent you Moses?

  363. What am I supposed to tell them? And this is God's response.

  364. Verse 14. God said to Moses.

  365. I am who I am. Say this to the people of

  366. Israel. I am has sent me to you.

  367. In other words, I am the one true God.

  368. I am the one that all of these lesser gods have pretended to

  369. be. I am the god behind everything

  370. that you assume about the world and about culture and about

  371. life. And about goodness, I am And you

  372. and I Live. Now, once again, enslaved in a

  373. polytheistic culture, not a culture that boughs down to

  374. Egyptian gods, but a culture that vows down to money, and

  375. sex, and power and Prestige, and what people think of us and

  376. where we live, and our ZIP code, and the list goes on and on and

  377. on. And God says, I am the Lord.

  378. I am. I am the one true God.

  379. Later, the Gospel of John, tells us a story.

  380. A story about people coming to Jesus.

  381. And as these Jews came to Jesus, they said, are you greater than

  382. our Father, Abraham? In other words, who you think

  383. you are teaching and Performing, Miracles, and doing all of these

  384. things, you really think you're greater that.

  385. All those who have gone before us.

  386. Even our Father, Abraham and Jesus responds this way.

  387. He said, truly truly, I say to you before.

  388. Abraham was I am. What was Jesus saying?

  389. Jesus was saying, I am greater than Abraham.

  390. And greater than Moses and greater than all the profits.

  391. I am the Lord. I am the Fulfillment of the

  392. burning bush. The majesty and Holiness of God,

  393. come down to earth. I am the great deliverer of the

  394. one who's come to save his people from the slavery of sin.

  395. The Passover Lamb Jesus is saying I am the Fulfillment of

  396. the law. The bread of life, I Am The Rock

  397. from which the water flowed. I Am The Great.

  398. I Am, I am the Lord and this is why John tells us the people

  399. picked up stones to throw them at him.

  400. Because they heard exactly what Jesus was saying.

  401. So what does it mean? To confess that Jesus is the

  402. Lord. What does that mean for us?

  403. Two thousand years later. After his first Advent to

  404. confess, that Jesus is the Lord. It is to say that he is.

  405. The one true God. And a culture that is beckoning

  406. for us to worship. So many other things, This is

  407. why Mere Christianity c.s. Lewis said that you cannot say

  408. that Jesus was just a wise man or a moral teacher because of

  409. what he says, right here in the Gospel of John.

  410. His claims don't allow us to make that assumption either.

  411. He's a liar or he's a lunatic or he is Lord.

  412. So once again, I ask you this Advent, what do you really

  413. believe? What do you really believe about

  414. the person of Jesus? Apostle Paul says that if you

  415. confess with your mouth, that he is Lord and believe in your

  416. heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

  417. And what does it mean to confess that Jesus is Lord?

  418. To confess that Jesus is Lord, is to confess that he is.

  419. Holy He is mighty and he is all powerful.

  420. And yet he has come near to us to confess.

  421. That Jesus is Lord, is to confess that he is the savior.

  422. The one who's come to redeem us from our sins.

  423. And to confess that Jesus is Lord, is to confess that he is

  424. the one true God. There are over 5,000 religions

  425. in the world today. And Christianity is the only

  426. one. that says that the one true God has not asked that we go to

  427. him because we never can But the one true God has come to us.

  428. His name is Jesus. He is the king of kings and he

  429. is the Lord. Let's pray.

  430. Father in heaven. May we see?

  431. Your lordship. Maybe see that you father, Son

  432. and Holy Spirit, are the Lord. That you are God of the Covenant

  433. of promises that you have kept and that every promise has found

  434. their yes and amen in Jesus yours son.

  435. And so he pray, Holy Spirit. What did you and Abel us now to

  436. confess with our mouths that you Jesus our lord and believe in

  437. our hearts. That you Jesus rose from the

  438. dead. To conquer our sins.

  439. It is in that power that we now pray that you would come to us

  440. once again. That you would light up our

  441. hearts and that you would come. One day to make all things new.

  442. We ask now that you would do this, do this not only in the

  443. season of Advent, but all the days of her life in Jesus name,

  444. we pray, amen.
