  1. Our scripture reading this morning is rather lengthy.

  2. I think it will go a little well for us if I just sort of scope

  3. will be reading before we read it.

  4. So, if you have your bulletin there, just kind of glance down,

  5. don't stay. And yet, we're not reading It

  6. begins in Isaiah chapter 10 verse 33.

    Isaiah 10:33

  7. And course as you might suspect it picks up right in the middle

  8. of a very long discourse. Some of it Pros, most of it

  9. poetry and the scene is in verses 33 and 34 is that the

  10. Lord God is a Forester. He's going through the woods

  11. through the forest and chopping down all the trees.

  12. The trees in scriptures. We saw in the Book of Daniel

  13. last year represent, quite often great nation.

  14. Ins and the Lord has lopping off all of these nations.

  15. He's sawing them. Chopping them down.

  16. The the spare though is one particular treats chopped down

  17. to be sure but out of that one tree the stump that's left there

  18. comes forth a little Branch, a little shoot coming up out of

  19. the stump that is left remaining.

  20. This is a theme of the two parts.

  21. We look at this morning. Is the theme of the shoot, the

  22. little Branch that's left out of the Dead stump.

  23. And the other is the remnant, that is the remains are the

  24. residue of the people, massive amounts of people in humanity.

  25. But there is a Remnant, there's a group of survivors.

  26. There are a group of escapees and the scripture speaks of

  27. them. And these are the two Old

  28. Testament motifs that we want to look too.

  29. Just like last time, we looked at the kind of the scope of the

  30. first and second coming. Of Christ.

  31. We're looking at things that sort of shape up in frame, our

  32. understanding of the Advent, the season of the coming of Christ.

  33. And we have it here, we have both Christ's first Advent.

  34. And his second Advent that are sort of Blended together all the

  35. way through to the Eternal state.

  36. In fact there in chapter 11 and verse 1, we find out that Little

  37. Chute, of course, who is Christ, he comes and then it describes

  38. the things about him. The spirit of the Lord, shall

  39. rest on him. Cetera and then get down a few

  40. more verses. We get down to around verses 3

  41. and 4 and he talks about him being the judge.

  42. He comes not only as a savior and as a teacher and a guide and

  43. all the things of counselor, all the things that are mentioned in

  44. verse 2. But he but he is a judge and

  45. he's also an executioner. He comes to execute

  46. righteousness and so we read about what he will strike the

  47. Earth with the rod. Out of his mouth in the breath

  48. of his lips. He shall kill the wicked awful

  49. sobering, and this is righteousness in faithless.

  50. Then in verse 6, immediately begins to talk about the beauty

  51. of the restored Earth, the restored creation.

  52. Special references made to the animals, both the wild animals

  53. and the domestic animals, the wolf, and the leopard in the

  54. calf, and the lion, and all of this beautiful picture.

  55. But the, but the heart of it is verse 9, they shall not hurt,

  56. nor destroy in all. In all my Holy Mountain for the

  57. Earth. Be full of the knowledge of the

  58. Lord as the waters, cover the sea, then Verse 10 talks about

  59. that day. That's coming that coming day

  60. which we see begins with Christ in Bethlehem and we'll end with

  61. Christ coming in the Clouds Of Glory to receive his own.

  62. The root of Jesse still stand as a signal and all the nations

  63. shall be looking to him. In that day, he will extend his

  64. hand yet a second time. It was, there's another phase.

  65. There's a second coming in the coming of Christ to recover.

  66. The Remnant, the remains of the people, he will raise a signal

  67. for the nation's. He will assemble and so forth

  68. and so that takes us down through verse 12.

  69. Now, let's stand and read it. You thought I was reading at

  70. that time, didn't you? Here.

  71. Now the word of the Lord behold. The Lord God of hosts will Lop

  72. the bowels from terrifying power.

  73. The great in height will be hewn down, the lofty will be brought

  74. low. He will cut down the thickets of

  75. the forest with an axe and Lebanon will fall by The

  76. Majestic. One, there shall come forth, a

  77. shoot from the stump of Jesse and a branch from The Roots.

  78. Shall bear fruit, and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,

  79. the spirit of wisdom and understanding the spirit of

  80. counsel and might The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the

  81. Lord in his Delight, shall be, in the fear of the Lord.

  82. He shall not judge by what his eyes, see, or decide decide to

  83. Spirits, by what his ears here. But with righteousness, he shall

  84. judge the poor and decide with equity for the meek of the

  85. earth. He shall strike the Earth with

  86. the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips, he shall

  87. kill the wicked righteousness. Shall be the belt of his waist

  88. and faithfulness. The belt of his loins.

  89. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb.

  90. Lamb and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat and the

  91. calf and the lion in The fetid calf together.

  92. And a little child, shall lead them.

  93. The cow and the bear shall graze.

  94. Their young shall lie down together in the lion shall eat

  95. straw. Like the ox, the nursing child

  96. shall play over the whole of the Cobra and the weaned child shall

  97. put his hand on the adders Den. They shall not hurt, nor destroy

  98. in all my Holy Mountain, for the Earth, shall be full of the

  99. knowledge of the Lord, as the waters, cover the sea.

  100. In that day. The root of Jesse who shall

  101. stand as a signal for the peoples of him, shall the

  102. nation's inquiry in his resting place shall be glorious in that

  103. day. The Lord will extend his hand

  104. yet a second. Time to recover.

  105. The Remnant that remains of the people from Assyria, from Egypt,

  106. from path, Ross from Kush. From elim, from shinar from

  107. Hamas, and the cokes Lanes of the sea, he will raise a signal

  108. for the Nations will earn assemble, the banished of the

  109. Israel, and gather, the dispersed of Judah, from the

  110. four quarters of the Earth, the word of the Lord, you may be

  111. seated. The coming of Christ is very

  112. beautifully, symbolized here in this kind of interesting

  113. picture. It's a picture out there in a

  114. wood that has been completely hewn down.

  115. And there's a stump, a stump Still Standing.

  116. Perhaps you've seen this in the country and on walks where you

  117. see an old tree stump out there dried and withered but yet

  118. there's a fresh Branch, a little Oh shoot.

  119. It's called a rod. It's like a little switch, a

  120. little Branch. It comes up out of that old dead

  121. stump and we'll talk a bit about the stuff for just a moment.

  122. The stump is called the stump of Jesse who in the world is Jesse

  123. will. Jesse was King, David's father.

  124. Jesse was also the grandson of Boaz and Ruth in the Old

  125. Testament. So in that stump what we have

  126. and they were Tribe of Judah and lived in the land of Judea there

  127. in the old days, in the land of Judah, in the actually, the

  128. little town of Bethlehem and those fields that had the

  129. shepherd's, where they were watching their flock By Night.

  130. Those were the same fields in which Little David took care of

  131. his fathers flocks. And so this is the historical

  132. pardon the expression, the extorter, call routing of Christ

  133. in humanity. Because in that stump, we have

  134. got only Jesse, Tyler. We have Ruth and Boaz, but we go

  135. back to Judah, not only go back to Judah, but we go back to, to

  136. Jacob and to Isaac and then to Abraham and we go back to Noah.

  137. And we go back finally, all the way back to Adam in that route.

  138. We have in that stomp, it with this root system coming down

  139. from the stump. We have all of the grounding and

  140. the routing of humanity. That's why you will find in the

  141. scripture gospels, both in, Luke it in Matthew before, the

  142. stories of the birth of Christ you'll find genealogies because

  143. it is important to you to know, as in the case of Matthew's

  144. genealogy that he traces this little shoot, this little

  145. Branch, this little Rod that comes up out of the stump this

  146. little live Vine that begins to emerge from the stump, it's

  147. rooted entirely in, in the book. Matthew in the Seed of Abraham,

  148. he is the true descendants. All the others have been lopped

  149. off. There's one true.

  150. Little Chute. Jesus himself called it when he

  151. was / teaching. He said I am the True Vine, it's

  152. the true tree trunk. It's the coming up of the real

  153. one from now on every person in humanity is going to be

  154. identified by how they relate to that little shoot coming up out

  155. of that. Ed stump of Jesse.

  156. Jesus said, I am the vine. Ye are the branches and he

  157. speaks of fruit bearing. Paul will use that same analogy

  158. in the Book of Romans where he will.

  159. Teach that. That there is a True Vine that

  160. grows up out of Abraham and out of out of David and comes up and

  161. it is the true Israel of God. And while the natural branches,

  162. that is the physical ethnic descendants of Abraham had been

  163. lopped off. Off due to their unbelief.

  164. There's been wild branches while tree branches from all over the

  165. woods, Gentiles of all ethnic groups.

  166. All kinds of people named here in the scriptures using some of

  167. the ancient lands have been grafted into that tree trunk.

  168. Not only that, he holds hope that even some of the natural

  169. branches that have been lopped off.

  170. Are grafted back in. And so now we have a whole new

  171. tree trunk and a whole new tree. In fact, just as I mentioned

  172. earlier, that trees represent Nations.

  173. This is the Israel of God. This is the true nation.

  174. Jesus Christ. Is that true vine?

  175. And he is that little Branch. It's interesting, it may be a

  176. coincidence. I'm having ska Scholars have a

  177. hard time. Sometimes connecting these dots

  178. and trying to stand on good solid.

  179. Ground when they do it. But I don't need a whole lot of

  180. solid ground. When I see something in

  181. Scripture that Thrills my soul. I just take it at face, value to

  182. go with it. The root word for the name of

  183. the town, Jesus grew up, and his Hebrew is not sir, and that's

  184. what's here. The word Branch.

  185. Y'all some fuser go something in the room.

  186. Remember the the ordeal down around Waco with the group that

  187. were called, the Branch Davidians well.

  188. That's what they were. They gave their name it when

  189. Adventist Really messed up and so much of their Theology and

  190. came to a sad sad end, is you all remember but nevertheless

  191. that was the thing. They were clean to.

  192. They were going back to something that was fundamentally

  193. clear in the word of God. And that is that there is a,

  194. there is a Radix, a root and it is found in a new route that is

  195. come up as the shook, all the other root system below.

  196. Connects to humanity, And connects to Abraham, but it is

  197. that true. Branch that True Vine.

  198. That is the one to whom we all, shall place our faith, and then

  199. the other particular Motif that's used in this Section of

  200. scripture and was selected by Mark as part of our sermon

  201. today, is this idea of the remnant, the root?

  202. And now, the remnant, The Remnant is, who all shall be

  203. saved. Who are The Remnant?

  204. Well, they are the ones that have survived.

  205. That have survived the tribulations that Came Upon

  206. God's people all the way from the earliest days.

  207. Through the Assyrian assault, through the Babylonian

  208. captivity, through the days of Kiss epiphanies through the days

  209. of the coming of Christ. And then through the days of the

  210. destruction of the nation of Israel, in time under Titus, the

  211. Roman officer in 70 AD, all of these ordeals, they have God's

  212. people have come through and those that survive those that

  213. are the believing Remnant. When we come to the Christmas

  214. story, we see a handful of these believing remnants, the people

  215. left in Israel, that was still Resting in the true God believed

  216. in him was looking to his salvation and not to their own

  217. works. We find these people think of a

  218. couple of them. Well, one of them was Zacharias,

  219. his wife, Elizabeth Of the Priestly family.

  220. Descendants of Levi, descendants of Aaron.

  221. They were faithful. They brought forth their son,

  222. John who was the Forerunner, the voice in the wilderness, crying

  223. prepare the way of the Lord. When Jesus was born, we found

  224. some Shepherds. Who heard the Herald Angels Sing

  225. and Came To Worship the newborn king.

  226. There were the Magi. There were people in the temple,

  227. an old band Simeon who had lived long, long time and was

  228. wondering why he was hanging around so long and but the Lord

  229. had given him a promise that he would not see death, until he

  230. had seen the hope of Israel. You know, an older lady

  231. wonderful old Widow that had served in ministered in the

  232. environments of the temple, her whole life and she was in the

  233. temple. When Jesus was brought there by

  234. his mother and father to do those ceremonies that are

  235. necessary in the early days of a child's life.

  236. Remnant survivors Believers. Those who have come through the

  237. great tribulations, those who have come through all of the

  238. sifting, those who have passed through the judgments, not

  239. because of their own. But because God sovereignly and

  240. wonderfully had saved them and preserved them, and that's

  241. really the doctrine of the remnant.

  242. The Lord is coming back to receive his Remnant.

  243. It's why You read the book of Revelation.

  244. There's a lot of talk in the Book of Revelation about

  245. perseverance and hanging in there and being, and being

  246. faithful to the end being faithful.

  247. Even to martyrdom, those whose land whose garments have been

  248. washed in the blood. Were those who were beheaded for

  249. the testimony of Jesus. I'm here to tell you, if I don't

  250. get to preach too much more in my lifetime, this is what I'm

  251. going to say. We are living on the precipice.

  252. Of a time of Great Tribulation great persecution for

  253. Christians. There's a beast out there,

  254. there's false prophet out there, there's a great Harlot out

  255. there. There's an antichrist out there

  256. and the spirit of all these things Works diligently.

  257. And it says here that the Tyranny is the is what takes

  258. over. The world Satan is a tyrant.

  259. In fact, when he talks about the remnant, let me give you.

  260. Where the remnant theme is all through the Old Testament, but

  261. just earlier there in chapter 10, I told you were picking up

  262. in the middle of the story with our text, but here's some

  263. background to that anniversary in that day.

  264. The remnant of Israel in the survivors of the House of Jacob

  265. will no more lean on him who struck them, but they will lean

  266. on the Lord. If I was a preacher, I'd stop

  267. and preach right here. Leaning on the Lord, you know,

  268. we seen that old song leaning on the Everlasting Arms Bible says,

  269. underneath are the Everlasting Arms.

  270. Strip it bare, get it down to the Radix, get it down to the

  271. root. Get it down to the fundamentals.

  272. Boil it down to the real deal. The only thing that matters in

  273. my life in your life, for our lifetime, as how we relate to

  274. the Lord Jesus Christ. Do we know him?

  275. Does he know us? Has he called us?

  276. Have we answered. Are we trusting?

  277. Are we believing? Are we leaning?

  278. Why does love that word? They lean on the Lord.

  279. That's the word for absolute dependence and Trust who lean on

  280. the Lord. The Holy One of Israel in truth.

  281. A Remnant will return the remnant of Jacob to the Mighty

  282. God for though, your People Israel be as the sand of the

  283. sea? Only a Remnant will return.

  284. Destruction is decreed That's the bad news.

  285. Destruction is decreed, this is God, speaking about his coming

  286. for his people, but the rest of the phrase, says overflowing

  287. with righteousness. If I preached on, stop right

  288. here and preach about that. To destruction is decreed and

  289. the destruction is overflowing with righteousness.

  290. What does that mean? That means that the just God Of

  291. Heaven and Earth, the god, that will make no mistakes with

  292. respect to Justice and fairness. All Justice or any other kind of

  293. Justice. He'll be the one that will sort

  294. it out. He will judge according to

  295. righteousness and faithfulness. Our Tech said, he will not just

  296. look at the appearance of the eye, but he will judge the

  297. thoughts and intents of the heart.

  298. And when there's a need for punishment, he will meet it out.

  299. Expertly, and fairly, and righteously and overflowing in.

  300. All of that is righteousness. The judge of all the Earth does,

  301. right? God, has committed all judgment

  302. to the son. Jesus said, when they were, Poor

  303. meaning Jesus and and persecuting him during his day

  304. and all that he said don't you know I'm the judge you know how

  305. smart is it to insult and to Mock and Tudor ride into curse

  306. in to kill the judge. And Jesus Christ is that one for

  307. the Lord God of hosts will make a full end Fu LL e ND a full end

  308. it was he's going to wrap it up, he's going to sum it up.

  309. That's the only thing that gives me any.

  310. He kind of Peace in this world in which we live.

  311. I read my YouTube every day and watch it all the news and

  312. listen, there's so much Injustice, so much corruption so

  313. much sin, so much violence so much crookedness so much lying

  314. in this Society it's making me sick to my stomach.

  315. Do you have any righteousness in your soul at all?

  316. Your like toll ancient lot. It talked about where his soul

  317. was vexed. My soul is vexed and vexed by

  318. the some of the same things that vexed.

  319. Ol lot back there in Sodom. The vexing of the soul, but the

  320. Lord will make a full end as to decreed in all the midst of the

  321. Earth. Now says the Lord O, my people

  322. who dwell in Zion and by the way, when you read your Old

  323. Testament, you read about Zion, it's Zions Hill, there's a whole

  324. history to it. It was the place where David set

  325. up a tabernacle to worship God, which wasn't that, like the

  326. temple that was in Jerusalem, which he was yet to build her

  327. Solomon, his son would build. But there was a different kind

  328. of worship that was very ordered and structured and very

  329. liturgical in the temple. But over in the Tabernacle,

  330. there wasn't anything, but the ark, and David there was nobody

  331. in the worship center, but Jesus and David And that's the way it

  332. ought to be in a true worship said, I don't care how many

  333. stained glass windows have, what kind of organ and what kind of

  334. choir and what kind of Elder board or anything else you have,

  335. when you get right down to it, there's got to be the Ark of the

  336. Covenant, which is the presence of God, in the Throne of God and

  337. his humble people. And that's worship right there.

  338. And that's what the Lord is coming to install.

  339. Is that kind of worship center? It's Zion, it's a mountain.

  340. It's the Holy Mountain of the Lord.

  341. My people who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians.

  342. And then he goes, an immediate prophecy about how the Assyrians

  343. will not will, not overthrow you, but instead, the Lord will

  344. overcome them. Now this this particular theme

  345. of The Remnant is carried forward in the New Testament and

  346. that's where we can do just a little spot of gospel preaching.

  347. Before we're done. It's that passage in your text.

  348. That I did not read. I'm going to read the larger

  349. context for you. Romans chapter 15 beginning in

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  350. verse 8, for I tell you that Christ became a servant to the

  351. circumcised, that's to the Jews to the to the people of the

  352. stump. To show God's truthfulness in

  353. order to confirm the promises made to the Patriarchs and it

  354. was God, didn't start over with a brand-new tree.

  355. He worked out of that. Same old, stump that contained,

  356. the Patriarchs, the father's In the root system.

  357. But coming out of that he took care of all Of the prune to

  358. fruit eliminating and bringing about a new trunk.

  359. And that's what that's what God has done.

  360. And in order that the Gentiles, that's the nation's that's the

  361. ethnic groups. That's the non-jews, that's the

  362. uncircumcised. In order that the Gentiles might

  363. glorify God for his mercy. And that's what we do on Zions

  364. Hill. When We Gather and Worship the

  365. Lord and He quotes Paul quotes. Several of them I'll call he

  366. quote, Psalm 18, therefore I Praise You among the Gentiles

  367. and we'll sing to your name, Rejoice, O Gentiles with his

  368. people. Jews and Gentiles together in

  369. one tree. Being brought together infusions

  370. to Paul explains how that middle wall of partition has been

  371. broken down. And now there's one people of

  372. God, Jews. True Jews, truly circumcised

  373. circumcised in the heart, not the flesh Rejoice O Gentiles

  374. with his people 117th, Psalm and again praise the Lord.

  375. All you Gentiles let all the peoples extol him.

  376. The Christian faith is an Our national faith, it is for all

  377. ethnic groups, All Peoples everywhere.

  378. Every time the Christian faith gets too bogged down in culture,

  379. it begins to distort itself. It's time for us to think in

  380. terms of God's kingdom God's culture and thinking worry, and

  381. and give our our time and attention to the building up of

  382. God's Cultus God's culture. Not just ethnic cultures because

  383. all the ethnic groups subside and reside and fall apart and

  384. are really rendered very little. There's all tongues and all

  385. tribes, and all kindred's are in the household of God.

  386. And then finally, in verse 12, he says, and again, Isaiah says,

  387. the root of Jesse will come. Here's that Old Testament Motif

  388. brought forward by Paul in his gospel preaching.

  389. The root of Jesse will come even who Rises to rule the Gentiles.

  390. I thought he was the king of the Jews.

  391. Yes, he is. But he's the king of the

  392. Gentiles because the Gentiles have been brought nigh.

  393. They've been brought together in with the, in, with the Jews into

  394. the same tree trunk and into the same route and into the same

  395. tree for even he who arises will rule the Gentiles in him with

  396. the Gentiles. Hope when that word, hope comes

  397. up. Now we have gospel preaching and

  398. that's what Paul does over and over.

  399. In the Book of Romans here in verse 13, May the god of Hope

  400. fill you with all joy and peace. Nice.

  401. What else do we symbol? What would we celebrate here at

  402. Christmas time? Then Joy Joy to the World.
