  1. Please remain standing for the reading of the word.

  2. We have three passages this morning.

  3. We are clustering. Our Advent sermons around, the

  4. Prophecies of Isaiah, having to do with the coming of Christ.

  5. And not only are we using the theme of O?

  6. Come O come, but we're also including several titles and

  7. designations for Christ in there by learning a little more of the

  8. full orbed truth about Who Christ is and what he is doing.

  9. Not didn't say, just has done but is doing and will do so

  10. these are the Clusters scriptures.

  11. The first one is from the 9th chapter of Isaiah, very familiar

  12. passage and we'll read that. And then we'll move over a few

  13. chapters in Isaiah and read a an episode a little bit of an

  14. episode that took place during the days of King Hezekiah of to

  15. whom and For Whom the prophet Isaiah ministered.

  16. And It's based upon a passage back in Second Kings. 18, Second

  17. Kings, 18, 19 and 20 are the story of the reign of King

  18. Hezekiah and during that rain occurred the greatest crisis in

  19. the history of Judah. And that was the northern Syrian

  20. Invasion from which the Lord spared them and save them and

  21. preserve the nation of Judah for another hundred and some odd

  22. years before it finally fell into captivity with the

  23. Babylonians. And then the Third And final is

  24. just a quotation out of the Book of Revelation will see how this

  25. all ties together. If I do my job.

  26. But here now the word of the Lord for, to us a child, is born

  27. to us. A son is given, and the

  28. government shall be upon his shoulder.

  29. And his name Shall be Called wonderful, counselor, Mighty

  30. God. Everlasting father, Prince of

  31. Peace of the increase of his government and peace.

  32. There will be no end. And on the throne of David and

  33. over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with Justice.

  34. And with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore the

  35. Zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  36. Then Isaiah chapter 22, a few verses in the in the end of that

    Isaiah 22 chapter mention

  37. chapter in that day I will call my servant eliakim the son of

  38. hilkiah and we'll clothed him with your robe and will bind

  39. your sash on him and will commit your authority to his hand.

  40. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to

  41. the house of Judah, and I will place on his shoulder.

  42. The key of the House of David, he shall open and None Shall

  43. I'll shut, he shall shut, and None Shall open.

  44. And I will fasten him like a pig in a secure place and he will

  45. become a throne of honor to his father's house.

  46. And they will hang on him, the whole honor of his father's

  47. house The Offspring and issue, every small vessel from the cups

  48. to the flagons in that day. Declares the Lord of hosts that

  49. the peg that was fastened in a secure place, will give way, and

  50. it will be cut down and fall. The load that was on.

  51. It will be cut off for the Lord. Lord has spoken.

  52. And then finally all the way over to The Apocalypse of Saint,

  53. John chapter 3 verse 7 and to the angel of the Church of

    John 3:7

  54. Philadelphia. Write the words of the Holy One,

  55. the true one who has the Key of David who opens, and no one will

  56. shut who shuts and no one opens the word of the Lord.

  57. Amen. You may be seated.

  58. What is this all about? This is about the kingdom.

  59. We living in a democracy, don't really think a whole lot about

  60. Kingdom, most of the countries and the civilizations of

  61. humanity, human history have known a lot about a king because

  62. most have been ruled by monarchy or something very close to it.

  63. We have in this country eliminated the office of King

  64. and so we don't really sometimes understand a few things about

  65. that. Office one is it's an office by

  66. appointment. It comes by Divine appointment

  67. or it becomes by right that descends for my family.

  68. It can come in ways of hard Revolution.

  69. It can come in ways of quiet, desperation.

  70. And but a kingdom comes, and the kingdom that will rule all the

  71. kingdoms. And he didn't even as beginning

  72. that Conquest today as the kingdom of God.

  73. According to The Parables of Christ is extracting, from all

  74. the ethnic groups, and all the other kingdoms citizens out of

  75. the kingdoms of the ancient Middle East.

  76. They're come citizens, they're called Believers in a new king

  77. there. Those who have come to Faith and

  78. sworn their allegiance and bow down before and now follow and

  79. Obey and serve a new king. That is King, Jesus and that's

  80. really what the coming of Christ was all about.

  81. It was the inauguration on Earth of the coming of a king.

  82. In fact, we see it there in Isaiah where it says unto us a

  83. child is born. The birth of a child speaks of

  84. Christ's Humanity. He was born of the Virgin Mary.

  85. He was born Into The Human Condition.

  86. He was 100% Homosapien human, man.

  87. But also, it says that a son is given that's royalty.

  88. That's a title. The scriptures say thou art my

  89. son. Today, I have begotten thee.

  90. It is an anointing. That is an Incarnation.

  91. That is an enthronement that comes from on high and it speaks

  92. of the deity of Christ. Christ is not only completely

  93. human, just like, we are, but he is fully Divine in every way.

  94. With God, Almighty, the father. And therefore, he comes as a

  95. unique person who's perfect to be the mediator between Divine,

  96. that which is transcendent and godly and the human that, which

  97. is temporal and Earthly. And so, that's what we have

  98. there. We have a man in the middle

  99. between all that is God and all that is human, and he comes to

  100. do a task. But the word that we focus on

  101. today is this idea of the Key of David last week we saw kind of a

  102. strange concept called the stump and the root of Jesse, remember

  103. that? And we talked about what all

  104. that teaches us. Well, this phrase here, the the

  105. Key of David teaches us something, and the key in

  106. anywhere, you look at is that which Unlocks is that, which is

  107. brings about opens up. But it also that, which shuts

  108. and around this one person. This son who is coronated King

  109. and who is of our very flesh. Rest all of the authority to

  110. open and close to shut in and to shut out to release and to

  111. capture, it's a sovereignty, it's a Divine Authority that he

  112. has. In fact, the scriptures speak in

  113. the, in the language of a couple of ideas.

  114. The word often is used for the word power.

  115. It's sometimes called the power of the keys and the Bible speaks

  116. of the keys to the kingdom. It speaks of the keys to death

  117. in hell, it speaks of the keys to the bottomless pit.

  118. So if you run this reference through scripture, you see that

  119. what we're looking at is absolute final assignment

  120. Authority, verdict. It is a, it is a very Regal

  121. term, they hold the keys, the king holds the keys.

  122. So we see in this passage some interesting things.

  123. This this first idea is the idea of authority around The idea of

  124. a of a royal key. It is expressed in our in the

  125. Greek language by word exousia and it means right Authority.

  126. Warrant, it means it can be to be authorized but not only is it

  127. a right? A power is a right but it is

  128. also used in the sense of being a power.

  129. And this word you're familiar with when it says Is I'm not

  130. ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto

  131. salvation, where does dunamis? And it means and active power.

  132. A power to actually accomplish. It is the dunamis of capacity,

  133. ability strength, So the King has not only the right to do

  134. with your soul. What he wants to do and Jesus

  135. tells us to fear Him who has the power of life and death over us.

  136. That's a hard notion for some people to swallow.

  137. In fact, in our sinful Rebellion, we just don't like it

  138. at all. But the fact is, there is a

  139. sovereign in the universe that has absolute power over your

  140. life. He has a right and Authority as

  141. your creator to do what he wants to do with his life, with your

  142. life. So we must think in those terms

  143. and begin to get our minds yielded and adjusted to this

  144. notion of absolute Authority. Just like the Philippian.

  145. Jailer had a whole belt full of keys, the King of Kings holds

  146. the keys, he holds the keys to it.

  147. All is his absolute Sovereign and has a right to be that but

  148. not only does he have a right? Is he authorized to do it?

  149. Does he have a warrant to have a absolute control over your life

  150. and over Nations and in the whole creation?

  151. But he also has the ability to do something about it.

  152. He not only has the right and the authorization but he has the

  153. wherewithal. He has the the authority to rule

  154. and to take dominion. And these two Greek words that I

  155. just mentioned exousia and dunamis or have match Teaching

  156. Latin words, of course. So much of theology in the

  157. western church moved into Latin. So you have to pay attention to

  158. that. The word that is analogous in

  159. Latin to exclusive has the word POTUS and it means the authority

  160. to the rule or here's an interesting word dominion.

  161. To dominate and the word for dunamis is matched by the word

  162. potentia which means Authority, Rule, and Dominion as well.

  163. So you just can't escape it with translation, the Latin and the

  164. Greek, the whole Heritage of this teaching about the kingdom

  165. of God comes to us at a pretty straightforward manner, right

  166. out of the Bible. In fact, if you would understand

  167. the Bible at all, you've got to understand something about the

  168. kingdom of God, God's righteous rule over.

  169. Over all creation God's righteous rule over the church

  170. God's righteous rule over his people God's righteous rule

  171. over. You personally, in fact, if you

  172. don't understand that, you'll find yourself, living a life,

  173. displeasing to the Lord and a life of sin.

  174. If you don't understand that, you won't understand all the

  175. millennial positions, you won't understand the doctrine of

  176. salvation. There's just a whole lot about

  177. the whole notion of Christianity that is wrapped up in

  178. understanding the Except of the kingdom of God.

  179. The entrance into the kingdom of God.

  180. I'll mention parenthetically is by repentance and Faith,

  181. repentance of your sins and your previous walk and Direction.

  182. Attitude, worldview out looking Behavior.

  183. Repent, And faith, belief, simple Shear Muir trust,

  184. dependence and coming to Christ for forgiveness and salvation,

  185. and that's the way the kingdom is injured.

  186. It is entered by repentance and faith.

  187. God, commands, all men, and women, God commands, all to

  188. repent. He tells us to be careful that

  189. we escape the wrath that is to come against.

  190. All rebellious subjects in God's order and I want well, I'll just

  191. stop it there. I won't get sidetracked too much

  192. on Notions of the Kingdom because we got a lot of head of

  193. us here and we got to just a few minutes to do it.

  194. One is, we need to take a good look at this story.

  195. This little story that's thrown in here is kind of interesting

  196. sees in that day. I will call my servant like him,

  197. the son of hilkiah and so forth. What's going on there?

  198. Well, let me tell you briefly that he's, this is in the days.

  199. This is about 720 BC or 7 + centuries before Or Christ was

  200. born. That's how far back the

  201. prophecies go. Actually, they go back twice

  202. that far and even further than that.

  203. And when you consider the Prophecies of the Book of

  204. Genesis, but those prophecies had to do with the coming of the

  205. king, the Messiah, the true. Son of David who would sit upon

  206. David's Throne when God established David's, Throne way

  207. back. He told Nathan the prophet way

  208. back in. Second Samuel 7 you read about

  209. it. Where God just simply says, I'm

  210. going to stablish this little cup all the kingdoms of the

  211. world. I'm going to stablish this one

  212. little mid-eastern potentate as the Eternal throne, and he put

  213. that designation upon King David.

  214. And that's the throne. And there were the descendants

  215. of King David came along. And, you know, Oh, the story of

  216. of Solomon, and then riobamba and jeroboam in the splitting,

  217. in the dividing and all that. But all through God says, it's

  218. that Kingdom of David, that House of David, the lineage of

  219. David, Is who I will rest. All of my Divine Authority in

  220. and the authority along with great Authority goes great

  221. responsibility, and the great responsibility is now, this King

  222. has not only the right to judge, but he has the responsibility to

  223. do, what's right? Do you hear that?

  224. God not only has the right in Christ to do anything he wants

  225. to with your life but he has the moral responsibility as to his

  226. character to do that, which is perfectly righteous.

  227. And just with your life, he will establish a rule of Justice

  228. Hill, establish a rule of righteousness.

  229. It's a holy rule. Holy means separated apart from

  230. different than it. Also means cleaned up and made

  231. fit and set aside for special use.

  232. That's what the Lord has in mind for his people.

  233. It's a royal rule over them, but it's a rule that has both

  234. responsibility as well as the authority in it.

  235. And this Authority that's placed upon the king is pictured.

  236. In the Bible, as a yoke. It's a heavy yoke that bears.

  237. A heavy burden or pulls a heavy load and it's placed upon the

  238. shoulders of the of the king much like a yoke would be placed

  239. upon oxen to pull a heavy load into bear, a heavy weight.

  240. And this E load comes upon Upon Jesus Christ.

  241. This yoke is placed upon him and he has this responsibility to do

  242. it. But back in the day, what

  243. happened in Isaac, it has a Caius day and I'll try to tell a

  244. 3 chapter story in about few minutes.

  245. We'll see. King Hezekiah is threatened by

  246. the Assyrian Conquest to collect police of the third, and

  247. sennacherib is General have seeds and conquered the northern

  248. kingdom. The king of Israel.

  249. The ten tribes and now they're laying Siege to the southern

  250. Kingdom. They've already conquered some

  251. of the cities on the Northern Edge and now, they're laying

  252. Siege to Jerusalem. And and Hezekiah the king cries

  253. out to the Lord for help and the Lord says, don't trust in

  254. chariots. Don't trust in your army but

  255. trust in me. Well, meanwhile the King wages.

  256. Is a propaganda campaign, the king of Assyria.

  257. And he sends a man down to tell him says are your people

  258. trusting in the Lord? Are you trusting in your silly

  259. little God? What other god of what other

  260. city of the ancient world has been spared by their God?

  261. And your king is telling you to trust in the Lord you do better.

  262. Give that up becoming trust me. If you do that, I'll take care

  263. of you. I'll be a good King.

  264. I'll be a great Sovereign rain over the people says the king of

  265. Syria, and in the men who are in charge of Hezekiah, is

  266. government. Tell that man said, holding

  267. speak, if you would in your language, don't speak in the

  268. language of Judea. He said, because our people can

  269. hear what you're saying. They can hear these threats and

  270. they can then know what our decision is.

  271. So they continue. To speak in the language.

  272. That is the native tongue. Where everybody in Jerusalem,

  273. can see what these propagandists.

  274. These embassies areas of the king.

  275. Well, the guy that was holding the the responsibility of the

  276. Prime Minister or the first minister of the one that had the

  277. real administrative. The say, the CEO of the chief

  278. operating officer in Judea was a man named shebna and he's

  279. mentioned, by the way, in your text back in verse 15.

  280. Before we get down to verse 20, where we read and shove do was

  281. the, was the one Who was the steward of the house.

  282. He had control of everything and he elevated himself to King

  283. built himself, a royal tomb and did all this sort of thing and

  284. he displeased the Lord. And the Lord is replacing him.

  285. And taken away the authority of shebna to be Hezekiah as prime

  286. minister and giving that authority to another.

  287. And that's what's happening in verse 15.

  288. He says, I will call my servant Eli Hakeem and I will clothe him

  289. with your robe. He's talking to shebna now.

  290. The prophet is and will bind his Sash on him and will commit your

  291. authority to his hand. So the authority of the prime

  292. minister's being changed. God Has Changed Hezekiah as

  293. prime minister and he promises that he shall be a father to

  294. catch that word, father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the

  295. house of Judah, I will place on his shoulder, the key or the

  296. Yoke of the burden of the House of David, he shall open and

  297. unsell shut and so forth. So, what's happening here is God

  298. is taking the Rarity, the exclusive away from.

  299. One prime minister under King Hezekiah and shifting it over to

  300. another for good reason. Nevertheless, God is is doing

  301. this to his people. And by the way, if I was a

  302. preacher, I'd stop preach right here.

  303. God is Sovereign enough to do that.

  304. Uh-huh. He will take from Esau gift to

  305. Jacob. He will take from Saul and give

  306. to David. He'll even according to Book of

  307. Ezekiel. He will even take the whole

  308. Shepherds of Israel. They're keying their priests,

  309. their profits, the whole leadership group from Israel,

  310. take from them, strip them of their Authority and give it to

  311. his righteous servant The Humble servant, Jesus Christ.

  312. And that's what a lot of the New Testament is about God.

  313. Taking the authority from the failing, unbelieving Unfaithful

  314. Shepherds of well, and giving it to the Good Shepherd, who dies

  315. and lays down his life for the sheep and who leads the sheep

  316. and whose voice the Sheep know. And this is what's happening in

  317. Israel. God is making this particular

  318. change and so when he does so he describes the authority now just

  319. in the moments we have left, let me just point out something

  320. about what this Authority entails and there are in the

  321. passage. We first read there.

  322. There are several names that are given unto us.

  323. A child is born. Son is given.

  324. That's the humanity and the Divinity, deity of Christ, the

  325. government shall be upon his shoulder.

  326. That's the yolk. He has the key.

  327. To call the shots. And he has the Yoke to Bear the

  328. responsibility before God of calling the shots.

  329. So that's what the office that Jesus has assumed as he becomes

  330. the king as he is. So anointed and so-and-so.

  331. Enthroned, and here in chapter 9 is very familiar.

  332. Passage is A passage which mentions the word name and his

  333. name shall be called and what is listed here are four Throne

  334. names for royal names titles, also descriptions of the king

  335. that sits on the throne. And if there's ever a good

  336. christological passage anywhere in the Old Testament, it's right

  337. here. Can listen to what these are and

  338. I know you're familiar with them.

  339. We've heard him read repeatedly. In fact I think almost every

  340. Advent season, one way, or the other in the 15 years I've been

  341. Been preaching, this little service, we've managed to bring

  342. this passage into one of the Advent sermons, one way or the

  343. other, and it's worth it, because listen to what he says,

  344. his name Shall be Called wonderful counselor, Mighty God,

  345. Everlasting father, Prince of Peace, and of the increase of

  346. his government and peace. There shall be.

  347. Oh no. In other words, it's a Eternal

  348. rain and it's mentioned again and it says the Zeal of the lord

  349. of the hosts will perform it. Well, what is what are these

  350. names mean? Well, the first one is

  351. wonderful. That means the king that sits

  352. upon the throne, it's going to be a wonderful counselor.

  353. First instance, he's a counselor, he is one that is

  354. called to advise. He is one who is called to lead

  355. to support to uphold and to give the right kind of advice in the

  356. right kind of admonition to the kingdom.

  357. And Jesus is certainly that in fact he is a child of wisdom

  358. loot in Luke 2 describes Jesus Christ, life.

  359. In terms of Proverbs 3, where he says he increased in wisdom and

  360. in stature and in favor, with God and man, that's Jesus

  361. Christ. He is a counselor, he is a, he

  362. is a controller, he is a strengthener.

  363. Actually, the word comfort means with fortitude, which streak he

  364. brings strength to the soul, isn't it?

  365. Wonderful to have someone on the throne that It holds the key to

  366. your life, be the one that is the wonderful counselor and the

  367. word wonderful means he's not only magnificent and wonderful

  368. in every way that he strikes all in Wonder in our souls as we

  369. behold the beauty of Christ but it says he is a wonder worker if

  370. there's anything to characterize the ministry of Christ.

  371. It was Miracles, incredible Miracles, feeding of the five

  372. thousand walking on the water calming the storm raising the

  373. dead, Healing The Sick casting out demons Lepers on and on and

  374. on, you can go the great wonderful deeds.

  375. In fact, one of the things that commended Christ to that current

  376. audience, that saw him physically with their eyes, was

  377. that he did incredible Miracles that could not be denied

  378. Nicodemus. Says, we know you're from God

  379. because nobody can do this kind of stuff, unless he's from God

  380. and that incited faith in the heart of Nicodemus, is he began

  381. to believe? But then he learned in order to

  382. be a member of that Kingdom and enter that Kingdom.

  383. You must be born again. So, it is waiting upon The new

  384. birth. What heard other title Mighty

  385. God. This is the concept, the word

  386. mighty and God put together is the concept of God as Valor God

  387. as the Valiant, God as the hero. And that's exactly who Jesus is.

  388. In fact, the thing that the hero does is he rises.

  389. Resurrection, raises restoring the House of David according to

  390. Acts chapter 15 and he restores restores The Fortunes of Israel

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  391. that are talked about all through the Old Testament, The

  392. Fortunes of you know, what refers is the fortunes of Israel

  393. restored. It's the blessings that come to

  394. us in Christ Ephesians chapter 1 come to us in Christ by Christ.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  395. Jesus wonderful blessings that are temporal that are personal.

  396. There's a Prosperity Gospel. Did you know that there's a

  397. Biblical? Prosperity Gospel is not the one

  398. you hear on TV very often but there's a Biblical Prosperity

  399. Gospel. Then when he gets right down to

  400. it Christ is going to prosper us.

  401. Immensely beyond all we can ask or think in this life and

  402. certainly in the life to come, he is a vowel or he's a hero,

  403. he's an everlasting father that word there member didn't mention

  404. that one of the things that they were going to give to eliakim
