  1. Well, it's now direct our attention to the word of God.

  2. We're still in The Sermon on the Mount.

  3. Although we have moved forward. We're in chapter 7, now chapter

  4. 7 of Matthew, The Sermon on the Mount.

  5. And I want us to look at the five versus not the sixth.

  6. It's there. I feel like the sixth is a whole

  7. different story. Shall I tell them, Tommy?

  8. You don't think I should? Okay.

  9. Okay, it was a weak attempt at humor I shared with Tommy but

  10. some things are kept confidential to the pastures.

  11. Many things, I hope. Listen.

  12. Now to the word of God, judge, not that you be not judged for

  13. with the Judgment you pronounce, you will be judged and with the

  14. measure you use, it will be measured to you.

  15. Why do you seek the speck? That is in your brother's eye

  16. and do not notice the log, that is in your own eye, or how can

  17. you say to your brother? Let me take the speck out of

  18. your eye. When there is the log in your

  19. own eye. You hypocrite first take the log

  20. out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to take the

  21. speck out of your brother's eye, the word of the Lord, you may be

  22. seated. Now we're still in The Sermon on

  23. the Mount. And Jesus is still teaching this

  24. elongated sermon this message with many, many topics.

  25. But the general things to remember and we've talked about

  26. this almost each and every time is that he speaking to his

  27. disciples, others are there in auditing this he's talking about

  28. their behavior, he's talking about their heart, he's talking

  29. about his disciples worldview and their treasure and their

  30. loyalties and own. On and on.

  31. And a lot of the things that Jesus says are those things that

  32. are always addressed with, do not, do not do this, do not do

  33. that. And he has the context in mind

  34. of the men who've been the spiritual leaders of these

  35. Judean people for many, many years.

  36. That is the scribes and the Pharisees.

  37. The doctors of the law, the Pharisees were that party.

  38. That that consider themselves to be experts, at Holiness, affect

  39. us. What the word means, it means to

  40. separate the separated ones and in Jesus contrast do not

  41. interpret the law like they do. Do not pray like they do

  42. ostentatiously do not give alms. Like they do do not fast as

  43. that. You can be seen of men like they

  44. do and on and on he's saying do not do not do not in the very

  45. next passage. He's going to say do not cast

  46. your Pearls Before Swine. And in this particular passage

  47. it's do not judge, do not judge in the people that the Lord has

  48. in mind to contrast his kingdom behaviors.

  49. Earth are the Pharisees. And we see this Spirit of the

  50. Pharisees in the scriptures. Very familiar passage.

  51. I'll just read it just a few verses.

  52. Two men went up to the temple. To pray.

  53. One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.

  54. The Pharisee standing by himself prayed.

  55. Thus God, I thank you that. I'm not like other men,

  56. extortioners unjust adulterers or even like this tax collector.

  57. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all I get, but

  58. the tax collector standing far off would not even lift up his

  59. eyes to heaven, but beat his breast saying, God, be merciful

  60. to me a Inner. Once again, Jesus is contrasting

  61. that of this self-righteous Pharisees with those who receive

  62. Grace, those who come by way of humble Contrition and repentance

  63. to receive forgiveness for their sins.

  64. Lord, have mercy upon me a sinner and who received from the

  65. hand of the Lord, the gift of forgiveness and grace, and mercy

  66. and the gift of eternal life. All Wrapped and packaged in

  67. Jesus Christ himself. So here he is Christ.

  68. The very sacrifice for sins is dealing with the sins of the

  69. heart. And so he tells these Pharisees

  70. not and he's telling his people not to be like the Pharisees and

  71. to not judge. Now, what is meant by that?

  72. Let me Define two or three words here that will be helpful.

  73. I think in understanding what we're what we're talking about.

  74. The first one is a word kirino and it means to judge and that's

  75. the word that used here. In fact, that's the only root

  76. word that used hear the word Credo means to judge principally

  77. but it's used over 20 times in the New Testament and it has

  78. about 22 or 23 different usage and and it depends on what

  79. prefix is put on the word or what word is combined with it to

  80. make a compound word as to what it may mean.

  81. But I will suggest to you that here judging is the whole

  82. judicial process of judgment. Let me spell out what I mean by

  83. that. Edward.

  84. The word means to judge, but it refers to the Judgment itself.

  85. It refers to the decision that is made in judging.

  86. Sometimes it means to discriminate or discern.

  87. Sometimes it means to condemn. Listen to all this because I

  88. think the Lord incorporates all of this when he says, do not do

  89. this. And so these meanings are all

  90. bound up in this route. It means interestingly enough to

  91. investigate. To answer.

  92. To probe. And noticed in the text when he

  93. talks about seeking. Diligently seeking the speck

  94. that is in your brother's eye as opposed to noticing.

  95. The beam that's in your own eye. There's a lot of Rich subtlety

  96. here in the Lord's words. And these words I think sort of

  97. really focus that in frame it the way it needs to be.

  98. So that's what the Lord is saying telling them not to do.

  99. It's this whole judicial process now, there is good judgment, the

  100. Judgment of God, the Messiah fought in the Old Testament over

  101. and over and over the word judgment is used.

  102. There's a lot of scripture about God being a righteous judge.

  103. Judge and a faithful judge and we'll talk a little bit more

  104. about that in just a minute as we come to quickly apply this.

  105. But what the Lord is talking about here is that that critical

  106. Probing, investigating curious Mal valent judging.

  107. That is done. Among Brothers.

  108. Now, Jesus is telling his disciples not to do this among

  109. themselves to each other. It was apparently very, very

  110. common for the Jewish people and especially the leadership of the

  111. Jewish people, to have this mindset because they had such a

  112. finely tuned and excellent, good and acceptable law written by

  113. the Lord himself. They had a fine-tuned sense of

  114. justice and equity in righteousness, and so, it was

  115. easy for them to look at someone else and notice how they that

  116. other person doesn't quite measure up.

  117. And to be critical and to detect and discern, all sorts of little

  118. weaknesses and failures in gaps, and shortcomings, and sins.

  119. Peccadilloes as well as as gross, Miss behaviors in others.

  120. Now, this particular mindset to judge is what the Lord is

  121. referencing against. When he speaks of the speck that

  122. is in your brother's eye, versus the log, that's in your eye.

  123. He's using. Obviously hyperbole is using the

  124. extremes of a tree. The spec is the little tiniest

  125. of twig. It's that little part of the

  126. tree that the bird uses to make his nest The log are the beam is

  127. the trunk of the tree. So obviously the contrast is his

  128. real Vivid you. You notice that little tiny twig

  129. that little tiny Speck. That mote that is in the in the,

  130. your brother. But you can't see the whole tree

  131. trunk, the whole gamut of unrighteousness and seeing in

  132. your own life. And so, the Lord is introducing

  133. to his disciples, a measure of discernment and discipline that

  134. cause as for balance, To start recognizing her own sins, and

  135. not being so quick to find. Judge condemn indict.

  136. Our brother I this this notion of really being able to see

  137. someone else's sin and not to see your own sin, apparently was

  138. kind of a feature of Jewish life and Paul deals with it in

  139. Romans, Chapter 2. And I want to read good long

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  140. passage. I'll try not to, I'll try not to

  141. comment on it and listen to how Paul when he's dealing with

  142. these. Very same types of people these

  143. These Jewish self-righteous people in chapter 1 of Romans,

  144. he's already dealt with the with the unbeliever.

  145. The Pagan that goes to the reprobate.

  146. Now, he's dealing with the self righteous Jew and this is some

  147. of the admonitions he gives, and this is really our message.

  148. This morning is this passage in one more that I'll read.

  149. It's not what I say it's what the scriptures say.

  150. So hear the word of the Lord therefore you have no excuse old

  151. man every one of you who judges For in the passing, judgment on

  152. another, you condemn yourself because you the judge practice

  153. the very same thing. We know that the Judgment of God

  154. rightly falls on those who do such things.

  155. Do you suppose old man? You who judge those?

  156. Who does such things that yet, do them yourself that you will

  157. escape the Judgment of God. Or do you presume on the riches

  158. of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that

  159. God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance.

  160. That verse cannot go uncommented, on verse 4.

  161. Do you presume on the riches of the kindness, the forbearance

  162. and the patients that cluster of the long-suffering Lord with

  163. centers such as I not knowing that God's kindness is meant to

  164. lead you to repentance, but because of your hard and

  165. impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on

  166. the day of Wrath. When God's righteous judgment

  167. will be revealed, he will render to each one according to his

  168. Works to those who by patients and well doing seek for Glory

  169. and Honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

  170. But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey,

  171. Obey the truth but obey unrighteousness, there will be

  172. wrath and fury, there will be tribulation and distress for

  173. every human being who does evil the Jew first.

  174. And also, the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for

  175. everyone, who does good the Jew first and also the Greek for God

  176. shows no partiality. That's where the conviction of

  177. our own Hearts should come. When we realize that it's not

  178. just others. It is we ourselves?

  179. Who are guilty? This particular sin.

  180. I think escapes. No one.

  181. In fact, sometimes the people that really work hard to be

  182. righteous in themselves or harsh and judgmental toward others who

  183. struggle and fail and how things wrong in their life.

  184. And the Lord is calling us to a self inspection and a

  185. self-awareness. And a self-consciousness

  186. concerning our sins and telling us to avoid that, self-righteous

  187. stance that causes us to judge others.

  188. It's a it's a teaching that will lead to the sweetest Spirit,

  189. possibly imagined in the life of the Believers, the life of the

  190. church. Jealousy's, the bitterness.

  191. The conflicts, the quibbling, the corals the skulls that come

  192. will be minimized when God's people learn to follow the

  193. teaching of the Lord here on The Sermon, on the Mount.

  194. As a couple other words will Define quickly.

  195. The word measure. It means not only the means but

  196. the extent. To which you set up the

  197. Criterion and the extent to which you judge others, that

  198. will be borne in mind when he comes time to judge, you.

  199. If it's a strict in a harsh standard, it will be laid

  200. against you several times already in The Sermon on the

  201. Mount. The Lord has referred to a final

  202. judgment. He will conclude The Sermon on

  203. the Mount with a pretty thorough Exposition about that judgment.

  204. That comes to all one way or the other before, it's all over

  205. with. We all are judged but the word

  206. there is the word Met tour which means m It's a metric metric.

  207. Whereby we are spiritually discerned and measured.

  208. And then one other word in this one.

  209. I think you're all very familiar with and it is the word

  210. hypocrite. The Lord I think has in mind the

  211. Pharisees, the scribes, when he uses this word, hypocrite, I

  212. know that cuz he actually called them that to their face on other

  213. occasion. But he also I think has a

  214. sincere desire, that his own disciples.

  215. Are not like that at all. Of course, I've known most of,

  216. you know, that to comes. It's a compound word.

  217. It has that word kirino in it crit, which means to judge to

  218. discern in all that. We've talked about a moment ago,

  219. but it has also the compound of the hypo, which means underneath

  220. it in before it. And, and sets forth, the, the

  221. burden that it Bears and the word has quite a history

  222. actually in the Greek language and carrying over into other

  223. cultures, it literally means To say something to answer to

  224. explain. And he comes from one who would

  225. read poetry, and then they would stand up and read poetry and

  226. most of the portrait that would be read in a public forum for

  227. the edification and the entertainment of people in the

  228. ancient Greek World. They would be a lot of

  229. platitudes and a lot of ethics and a lot of lecture and a lot

  230. of things that need to be said in the poem and the person would

  231. read the poem and they would be standing out front a reading and

  232. Explaining and eloquently setting forth this beautiful

  233. moral poem. But they themselves may be a

  234. liar and a drunk, and who knows? What they are off stage and

  235. behind the scenes, but up there in front of everybody there, as

  236. you were there wearing this, this facade this mask, and it's

  237. talks about how that this is the role.

  238. It's the pretense that a person has in that particular role and

  239. later, it became routine to think of life.

  240. As that, which is an the conduct that's played out in in real

  241. life is manifested on a stage. That's the whole point of drama.

  242. It takes the activities and the experiences and the attitudes of

  243. vocabulary, all of these things of life and puts it out there on

  244. display. I wonder Shakespeare thought

  245. when he said all the world's a stage and all of us are merely

  246. players. He had this kind of character in

  247. mind and it thinks about those that separate precept from

  248. practice. Are those that separate talk

  249. from walk? And I think this is what the

  250. admonition is pushing us toward getting rid of all.

  251. False pretenses. And so this term that Jesus uses

  252. as a name and a designation, you Hypocrites, had a lot of meaning

  253. to it. And the thing that was most

  254. notable to me, is the realization that Jesus is

  255. telling us not to judge. He's telling us.

  256. That we are not to be like the Pharisees.

  257. He's telling us. How we are to live our lives.

  258. And he is telling us about the expectation.

  259. And all the world all the time. Jesus knows he is the judge.

  260. The very one admonishing. They're very one encouraging, a

  261. very one instructing. and as we find, as we end this to Sermon

  262. on the Mount, the one teaching with great Authority, the reason

  263. he had great Authority was who he is.

  264. He himself is the judge. So finally as I wind up let me

  265. just hear John's gospel. The teaching of John's gospel

  266. around this subject. The father judges no one but has

  267. given all judgment to the son. That all may honor the son just

  268. as they honor the father, whoever does not honor the son

  269. does not honor, the father who sent him.

  270. Truly truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and

  271. believes him who sent me has eternal life.

  272. He does not come into judgment but has passed from Death To

  273. Life. John is giving us now the very

  274. words of Jesus. For as the father has life in

  275. himself. So he has granted the son also

  276. to have life in himself and he has given him authority to

  277. execute judgment because he is the son of man.

  278. Do not Marvel at this for an hour is coming, when all who are

  279. in the tombs, will hear his voice and come out those who

  280. have done, good to the resurrection of life.

  281. And those who have done evil to the resurrection of Judgment.

  282. Judgment.
