  1. Our Father, we ask that you would now come to us.

  2. Through your spirit. And through the sun, we pray

  3. come Lord, Jesus. We know that it is often that we

  4. find ourselves. Even on the Lord's Day.

  5. Distracted. Sometimes weighed down by sin.

  6. Other times full of doubts and questions.

  7. And so we pray that you would meet us here.

  8. And as we hear your word, And as Lord Christ, we hear your sermon

  9. once again. Did you would set our feet

  10. firmly? On the way of the cross.

  11. And that you, by the power of the Holy Spirit would lead us

  12. through the narrow gate. And help us to see the life and

  13. joy that's on the other side. Meet us here.

  14. Now we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  15. Would you please stand for a reading of God's word?

  16. We're continuing our series Through The Sermon on the Mount.

  17. This morning, I'll be reading from Matthew, Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  18. beginning with verse 13. These are Jesus's words for us.

  19. This morning. Jesus said, enter by the narrow

  20. gate for the gate is wide. And the way is easy, that leads

  21. to destruction and those who enter by it are many For the

  22. gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life and

  23. those who find it are few. This is the word of the Lord.

  24. You may be seated. Now, today one of the most

  25. common critiques against Christianity.

  26. And our pluralist society is the exclusivity of Jesus.

  27. People will often ask isn't it? Narrow to believe that

  28. Christianity is the only true religion.

  29. Perhaps, you've asked that same question yourself.

  30. Others will ask how can Christians say that Jesus

  31. Christ? Is the only way to Salvation.

  32. Isn't that hateful isn't that bigoted?

  33. Author of Paulo Coelho wrote The Alchemist.

  34. Among many other works wrote that all religions lead to the

  35. same God. And they all deserve the same

  36. respect. And similar fashion Gandhi, once

  37. said that the different religions are beautiful flowers

  38. from the same Garden. Or they are branches of the same

  39. Majestic tree. Therefore, they are equally

  40. true. I think these two sentiments

  41. help capture what people often believe in our pluralistic age,

  42. that all of these different ways of believing, all of these

  43. different ways of religion. All of these different truths

  44. have to be grasping at the same thing, right?

  45. The question, I want to ask this morning is, can that really be

  46. possible? Are religions really all the

  47. same. Can they be equally true?

  48. This morning The Sermon on the Mount.

  49. Jesus shows us that Christianity is unlike any other religion in

  50. the world. It is completely unique and what

  51. it teaches and what it offers and he shows us the uniqueness

  52. of the Gospel when he invites us to enter by the narrow gate.

  53. And in fact, he shows us this gate is so narrow.

  54. That it is the only way to life And this morning, I want to show

  55. you why that is actually good news.

  56. So this morning, I just have two points.

  57. The first is this Jesus tells us there are two ways.

  58. I want you to look with me. Matthew 7 verse 13.

    Matthew 7:13

  59. Jesus said, enter by the narrow gate for the gate is wide, the

  60. way is easy that leads to destruction and those who enter

  61. by it are many and then he also said for the gate is narrow and

  62. the way is hard that leads to life and those who find it are

  63. few. So first, what I want you to

  64. consider is that Jesus says there are two ways to Ways to

  65. Live. There's the hard way and the

  66. easy way we still use this language today Which way do you

  67. want? You want the hard way or the

  68. easy way? Exactly, everybody wants the

  69. easy way. It's meant to be a very simple

  70. question with an answer that seems obvious to us.

  71. And yet Jesus is using it as a warning.

  72. To say. Not so fast.

  73. Because the way that seems easy. Leads to death.

  74. Wait, it's hard as the one that leads to life.

  75. This way of thinking actually goes all the way back to the Old

  76. Testament throughout the Bible. This idea of two Paths of Life

  77. summing up all of human existence really 22, different,

  78. and opposite paths is nothing new.

  79. Jesus is building on this tradition, Jeremiah 21:8.

    Jeremiah 21:8

  80. The prophet says, thus says, the Lord behold I set before you the

  81. way of life, and the way of death to Current ways to live

  82. one leads to life, the other leads to death.

  83. Psalm 1 the psalter, the Psalms itself, they begin with this

  84. idea of two paths. The psalmist says, blessed is

  85. the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked nor stands

  86. in the way of Sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers verse 6.

  87. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous but the Way of the

  88. Wicked Will perish, there are two ways to pass one of the way

  89. of Sinners that leads to death. The other is the way of

  90. righteousness, leads to life and here Jesus in the sermon amount

  91. of building on that idea, and he was saying, don't move.

  92. So. Fast into the easy way.

  93. The easy way is going to seem like the way you should go, but

  94. it's actually the way that leads to destruction.

  95. It's the hard way. The hard path that leads to

  96. life. So, what are these ways actually

  97. look like? What is the easy way?

  98. And what's the hard way? Well, I think Jesus has been

  99. teaching us about the hard way throughout the Sermon on the

  100. Mount. If you go back to the very

  101. beginning, I think he's talking about the hard way when he's

  102. teaching us to be attitudes. This is the hard way.

  103. The more difficult way the way that seems so counterintuitive

  104. to us. It's this way that Jesus flips

  105. on its head and says this is the way to life.

  106. I want you to listen to the hard way.

  107. Matthew 5 verse 3. Jesus is the hard way.

    Matthew 5:3

  108. Looks like this blessed are the poor in spirit.

  109. For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

  110. Blessed are those who mourn for they will be?

  111. Comforted. Blessed, are the meek for they

  112. will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and

  113. thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

  114. Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive Mercy.

  115. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see.

  116. God blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of

  117. God. Blessed are those who are

  118. persecuted for righteousness sake?

  119. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  120. Ian. I Think Jesus is describing the

  121. hard way that leads to life. It's hard because it's the way

  122. of humility. The way of self-sacrifice the

  123. way of suffering. It's hard.

  124. Because Jesus is inviting us into the way of the cross.

  125. This Is The cruciform Life and this is what makes The Sermon on

  126. the Mount. So radical and so challenging

  127. for us because we hear that and we say well who wants to go down

  128. that way? If we're honest.

  129. Who wants to take that path? The path of suffering, the path

  130. of sacrifice, the path of dependents.

  131. To answer that question. We have to consider the easy

  132. way. What does Jesus mean by the easy

  133. way? I think, one of the best ways

  134. that I explained the easy way to you.

  135. Is to read, not the Beatitudes to you.

  136. But I want you to listen for just a second.

  137. As I give you the anti Beatitudes.

  138. This is the easy way. Blessed are the proud and the

  139. Arrogant for they will build their own little kingdoms.

  140. Blessed are the avoidant and the apathetic for they will strive

  141. to make themselves. Comfortable blessed are the

  142. powerful for they won. Hear it everything that they can

  143. control. Blessed are the self-righteous

  144. for they will learn to look better than everyone else around

  145. them. Blessed are the vengeful and the

  146. vindictive for they shall win at all costs.

  147. Blessed are the lustful and the self-indulgent for they shall

  148. see their Idols as more and more captivating.

  149. Blessed are the divisive and the quarrelsome for they shall be

  150. called sons of their own tribes. Blessed, are those who are

  151. celebrated for being self-righteous.

  152. For theirs is the kingdom of men and blessed.

  153. Are you and others compliment you, and celebrate, you and

  154. utter all kinds of praise for you on your account.

  155. Don't worry, be happy for your reward is great on Earth.

  156. And for so they praised every passing culture, every Fallen

  157. Nation, every collapsed, government every disbanded

  158. political party, every empty philosophy, every false religion

  159. and every disproven scientific and social theory that has gone

  160. before you my friends, that is the easy way.

  161. And it is enticing to us. Each and every day, we are lured

  162. to go down the easy path. And Jesus is saying stop.

  163. Not so fast. The easy way seems like the way

  164. to go but it leads to death. That leads to destruction.

  165. It leads to Eternity separated from God.

  166. It's the hard way the way of suffering and self-sacrifice the

  167. way of the cross that leads to life.

  168. How can we go down that path? The answer is, we can't.

  169. And this is why Jesus said in the Gospel of John, I am the

  170. way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father,

  171. except through me. It's as much a statement about

  172. the exclusivity of Jesus as it is about our inability.

  173. When Jesus says that no one comes to the father, except

  174. through him, he's saying that no one can come to the father.

  175. We don't have the ability no one.

  176. None of us can do it on our own, but thanks be to God.

  177. That Jesus is the way. The only way, the only one who's

  178. walked down the hard way in front of us.

  179. And he has forged a path all the way to the cross.

  180. Author of Hebrews calls him, the Arca Goss, the Trailblazer the

  181. author and Perfecter of our faith, the one who was gone

  182. before us, And now he is calling us to follow him on the hard way

  183. to life. So this morning as you hear that

  184. you should say well why would I want to do that?

  185. And how could I even do that? How can I even follow Jesus on

  186. the hard way? Maybe you're feeling that this

  187. morning. If you've been walking with

  188. Jesus, for a long time or you're considering Christianity was a

  189. well, who can follow Jesus to the cross, That's why Jesus

  190. before he calls us to walk down the hard way he says, enter by

  191. the narrow gate. So second thing I want you to

  192. know Jesus, not only says, there are two ways, he says there are

  193. two gates, one is the wide gate, the other is the narrow gate.

  194. I want you to listen again, what Jesus says Jesus says, enter by

  195. the narrow gate for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that

  196. leads to destruction and the gate is narrow.

  197. And the way is hard that leads to life.

  198. And the same way that Jesus is challenging Us by saying the

  199. hard way leads to life and the easy way leads to destruction.

  200. His words here, talking about narrow and wide are meant to be

  201. provocative. They're meant to challenge us

  202. when he says, enter by the narrow gate, not the wide gate.

  203. Wait, it's meant to cause us some pause.

  204. You see? Because in the ancient world,

  205. the idea of narrowing this wasn't necessarily a good thing.

  206. Just like it's really not a good thing today.

  207. As you think of the word narrow, you think of constrictive?

  208. You think of difficulty, in fact, it's so narrow.

  209. That later in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus compares, the

  210. narrow gate to the eye of a needle.

  211. It's that small. That's that narrow.

  212. Jesus is challenging us with the absolute narrowness of the

  213. Gospel. But I want you to see this

  214. morning, he's also showing us why the narrowness of the Gospel

  215. is good news. Why would Jesus call us to enter

  216. by the narrow gate? To answer that question.

  217. We have to first understand what he means by the wide gate.

  218. Look what he says about the wide gate, the end of verse 13.

  219. He says the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to

  220. destruction and notice what he says next.

  221. And those who enter by it are many.

  222. The gate is wide and many come to it.

  223. There is not a better description of our pluralistic

  224. society. Pluralism is a wide gate.

  225. What do I mean by that Leslie? New begin was a British

  226. Theologian Missy ologist. One of my favorite books ever

  227. wrote. It's called The Gospel and a

  228. pluralist society, I want you to listen to what he says about

  229. pluralism. He says it's become commonplace

  230. to say that we live in a pluralistic society, not merely

  231. a society, which is in fact, plural and the variety of

  232. cultures religions and Lifestyles which and Embraces

  233. but pluralistic, in the sense that this plurality is

  234. celebrated As a thing to be approved and cherished.

  235. The most simple definition pluralism, is simply the

  236. existence of lots of different ways of thinking and forms of

  237. religion. It acknowledges that there are

  238. lots of different religions out there, which there are almost

  239. 5,000, some estimates say, and that Beyond, even religion,

  240. there's lots of different World Views in ways that you could

  241. think about the world. Lots of different explanations

  242. and philosophies. And pluralism says that these

  243. all exist. Today's pluralism goes, goes

  244. another step further. and it says not only do these differing

  245. views exist, But they all coexist and they must be

  246. celebrated as all pointing to the same thing.

  247. Today, pluralism is not simply about diversity.

  248. It's about celebrating. The diversity of religions as

  249. being multiple paths to the same God and the same salvation.

  250. So again a question we have to ask this morning is, is that

  251. true? Is it even possible?

  252. Because add its core. I think what Jesus would say to

  253. us today is that pluralism is a wide gate.

  254. And many try to infer through it.

  255. But what I want you to see this morning, a reason why the narrow

  256. gate is such good news. Is because the wide gate of

  257. pluralism. Invites you to enter with these

  258. impossible instructions enter by the wide gate and save yourself.

  259. Enter by the wide gate and save yourself.

  260. And you see this is what pluralism actually gets half,

  261. right? Because every other religion

  262. other than genuine Christianity. In the world today, every other

  263. philosophy and way of thinking actually does have a very common

  264. message. Save yourself.

  265. Luke fairy French philosopher, put it this way in a brief

  266. history of thought. He said the Quest for us

  267. salvation without God as at the heart of every great

  268. philosophical system. In other words, even apart from

  269. religion today, if you say, I'm not a religious person, That's

  270. actually a deeply theological statement.

  271. And deep down you are on your own quest to self salvation,

  272. just like everyone else. every other religion outside of

  273. genuine, Christianity has the same message Buddhism, save

  274. yourself through Enlightenment Hinduism, save yourself through

  275. action, that knowledge devotion Islam, save yourself through

  276. obedience and then there is of course the most popular man made

  277. religion in the south cultural Christianity.

  278. Which says save yourself. By knowing more and being better

  279. than the people around you. Every one of these says, save

  280. yourself. And it's an impossible task.

  281. This is why the narrow gate is good news.

  282. Because Jesus has made a way for us.

  283. He has given us a narrow gate. Yes it is narrow.

  284. Yes it is unique. In fact, it is the only one that

  285. says not save yourself. But you've been given a savior.

  286. not enter the wide gate and save yourself but Jesus is inviting

  287. us to enter through the narrow gate because Jesus saves

  288. Christianity is the only religion and the world that

  289. doesn't ask us to claw our way to God through obedience or

  290. knowledge or Enlightenment. But it's the only one that says

  291. God came down to us for our Salvation.

  292. The only one that says that it our savior God humbled himself

  293. by going on the hard way. And he took the hard way, all

  294. the way to the end to the cross. It's the only one that says that

  295. our savior died a shameful and humiliating death.

  296. He was punished for you and me and on the third day he rose

  297. again. So that we would have life at

  298. the end of the hard way of suffering.

  299. Jesus is inviting us to enter the narrow gate.

  300. Because the narrow gate is good news.

  301. It's the only news that says salvation has been given to you.

  302. Jesus, put it this way in the Gospel of John.

  303. Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep all who

  304. came before me are thieves and robbers, but the Sheep did not

  305. listen to them. I am the door.

  306. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out

  307. and find pasture. But I want you to hear this

  308. morning is that Jesus is the narrow gate?

  309. The gate that we are invited to enter into is so narrow.

  310. It is fixed on a person, the person and work of Jesus.

  311. And you say, well why did he do that for us?

  312. Why is he open this narrow gate. So all who believe as he says

  313. could enter by him, Because he loves us.

  314. The wide gate. The wide gate promises salvation

  315. that you could never achieve. And for that reason, it's

  316. actually the most difficult. The hardest the most hateful.

  317. And most exclusive. Way of Salvation that exists.

  318. Because no one can do it. There is no one who can know

  319. enough. No one who can obey enough and

  320. no one who can be good enough. To be called worthy of

  321. salvation. And more than that, the thing

  322. that we never think about is that, even if you could try

  323. there's always someone who's going to do better than you

  324. ever. Think about that.

  325. So how do you know you've made the cut?

  326. Jesus is the narrow gate. Who is open the door wide for

  327. all who it enter by him and him alone, and that makes the

  328. exclusivity of Jesus. The most radically inclusive

  329. message that has ever existed. Because no batter, what's in

  330. struggle that you are bringing into the sanctuary this morning?

  331. No matter. Whatever.

  332. That is entangling you. No matter your background and

  333. where you come from, Jesus is inviting you and me to enter by

  334. the narrow gate. To come to the door and knock.

  335. And he tells us that anyone who had enter by him would be saved.

  336. Jesus is the narrow gate. Because he is the only one who

  337. laid his life down and walked the hard path to the cross and

  338. this morning, he is calling. He is inviting you and me to

  339. enter by the narrow gate. And to once again follow him

  340. down the hard path. The way of suffering, the way of

  341. sacrifice, and the way of the cross.

  342. That in his death and Resurrection, we would find

  343. life. Let's pray.

  344. Father we thank you for the grace and love that you have

  345. given us an inviting us to enter by the narrow gate.

  346. And now as we come to your table set before us, help us to see

  347. why this narrow gate is such good news.

  348. Because you have called anyone who had inter by you, to

  349. Salvation. May we see in this Sacrament.

  350. A tangible picture of that salvation this morning that is

  351. all of us come forward and partake of this communion

  352. together and we look around we would see that every kind of

  353. background and every kind of story you have folded into the

  354. hard path and the way of the cross.

  355. But also help us to see if we partake of these elements and we

  356. Feast on your body in your blood, help us to see that

  357. you've walked this hard path before us, he died and he rose

  358. again. So that we could have life and

  359. we pray that you would eat and drink the joy of that life.

  360. Abundantly now we ask this in Jesus name, amen.
