  1. For Abel. Would you please stand for the

  2. reading of God's word? This morning, I'll be reading

  3. from Exodus chapter 12 beginning in verse 1.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  4. This is the story of the Passover.

  5. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, this month

  6. shall be for you the beginning of months, it shall be the first

  7. month of the year for you to all the congregation of Israel that

  8. on the tenth day of this month, every man shall take a lamb

  9. according to their fathers houses, a lamb for a household

  10. and if the household is too small for a lamb than he and his

  11. nearest neighbors. So take, according to the number

  12. of persons, According to which each of you Shall make your

  13. count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without

  14. blemish. A male a year old.

  15. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats and you shall

  16. keep it until the 14th day of this month.

  17. When the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall

  18. kill their lambs at Twilight. Then they shall take some of the

  19. blood and put it on the to doorposts and the lintel of the

  20. houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the flesh that

  21. night roasted on the fire with unleavened bread and bitter

  22. herbs. They shall eat it.

  23. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled and water.

  24. But roasted its head with its legs and its inner parts and you

  25. shall let none of it. Remain until the morning,

  26. anything that shall remain until the morning you shall let burn

  27. and this man, are you shall eat it with your belt, fastened your

  28. sandals on your feet, and your staff and your hand and you

  29. shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover for.

  30. I will pass through the land of Egypt that night.

  31. And I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt.

  32. Both man and Beast, and all the gods of Egypt, I will execute

  33. judgments. I am the Lord, the blood shall

  34. be a sign for you on the houses where you are.

  35. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you and no plague will

  36. befall you to destroy you. When I strike the land of Egypt,

  37. this day shall be for you a Memorial Day.

  38. And you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your

  39. Generations as a statute forever.

  40. You shall keep it as a feast verse 21, then Moses called all

  41. the Elders of Israel and said to them go and select Lambs for

  42. yourselves according to your Clans and kill the Passover

  43. Lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip

  44. it in the blood that is in the Basin and touched a lentil in a

  45. two-door post with the blood that is in the Basin.

  46. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the

  47. morning for the The Lord will pass through to strike the

  48. Egyptians. And when he sees Blood on the

  49. lintel and on the two-door post, the Lord will pass over the door

  50. and will not allow the Destroyer to enter your house has to

  51. strike you. You shall observe this, right?

  52. As a statute for you, and for your son's forever, and when you

  53. come to the land that the Lord will give you, as he has

  54. promised, he should, you shall keep this service.

  55. And when your children say to you, what do you mean by the

  56. service? You shall say?

  57. It is the sacrifice of the Lord's.

  58. Passover for passed over the houses of the people of Israel

  59. in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians, but spared our houses

  60. and the people bowed their heads.

  61. And worshiped, this is the word of the Lord.

  62. You may be seated. Two of the most fundamental

  63. questions of person. Can ask and life are this, is

  64. there a God? And what is he like?

  65. And of course, the questions underneath those questions are,

  66. how do you know And so this morning, if you do not believe

  67. in God will the question of course is well, how do you know

  68. what face do you have to be certain that God does not exist

  69. and if you do believe in God and the question is well then what

  70. is he like? And how do you know what he is?

  71. Like where do you get your vision?

  72. Your understanding of God? Do you know, God but according

  73. to what he has described himself to be in his word.

  74. Or have you made God in your own image?

  75. Theologians when they talk about God and what he's like, they

  76. describe his attributes, these qualities, these characteristics

  77. of who he is, and what he is, like things like his

  78. omnipotence. His omniscience, his goodness

  79. and his Mercy. But of all of his Divine

  80. attributes, perhaps the most foundational and often the most

  81. controversial Is his sovereignty.

  82. And for many people, they consider the sovereignty of God.

  83. They assumed that his sovereignty makes him out to be

  84. cold to be calloused. To be harsh to be lacking in

  85. love. But when we open up the

  86. scriptures, And we read about God and what he is like when we

  87. get to know him, for who he really is and who he's revealed

  88. himself to be. We see that the sovereignty of

  89. God does not make him to be cold and harsh and lacking in love,

  90. but it's the sovereignty of God that is not only the foundation

  91. of his judgment. But it's the sovereignty of God.

  92. That's the foundation of his grace.

  93. And then the story of the Passover.

  94. We see judgment and Grace collide.

  95. See, as we think of God as attributes.

  96. It's easy for us to think of each of these qualities, as

  97. these separate parts of who he is.

  98. But you see God is personal. And each of these

  99. characteristics are intermingled together.

  100. And it's at the Passover that we see judgement and Grace woven

  101. together by the sovereignty of God. and so this morning, I want

  102. you to see God for who he is and I want you to get to know his

  103. Sovereign Grace for you. I want you to see Jesus as our

  104. Passover Lamb, and I want you to see why both his judgment and

  105. his grace, why? That is good news for us this

  106. morning. Want to look at this in just two

  107. ways. First thing I want you to see I

  108. want you to see The Sovereign Grace of God in his judgment.

  109. The story of the Passover begins, right?

  110. Where we left off last week so before we get to our passage in

  111. Exodus 12, I want you to turn in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 4.

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  112. If you don't have a Bible, you can use the blue Pew Bible in

  113. front of you. If you don't have a Bible at

  114. all, that's our gift to you. We'd love for you to take it

  115. home with you. So you can get to know the

  116. character of God for yourself. This is Exodus 4 verse 22.

    Exodus 4:22

  117. This is what we've been looking at the last couple weeks.

  118. God comes to Moses as he calls him to go to pharaoh to redeem

  119. his people with a mighty hand and outstretched arm.

  120. And this is what he says to Moses first 22.

  121. He says, you shall say to Pharaoh, thus says the Lord,

  122. Israel is my firstborn son and I will say to you, let my son go

  123. that he may serve me. If you refuse to let him go

  124. behold, I will kill your first Barnes.

  125. Son. As God calls, Moses to go to

  126. pharaoh and order to redeem his people.

  127. We see his judgment and we see his grace We see his grace and

  128. identifying the people of Israel as his firstborn son.

  129. This is his chosen people. His prized possession and God

  130. will stop at nothing to get his first born, son back for

  131. himself. But we don't just see his grace.

  132. We see his judgment. And a declaration that God makes

  133. to Pharaoh through Moses. If you refuse to let my people

  134. go behold, I will kill your firstborn son.

  135. The grace of God requires judgment.

  136. But I also want you to know that the Judgment of God can never be

  137. separated from his grace. Let me show you what I mean.

  138. Did you turn a few chapters ahead to Exodus 7?

  139. Exodus 7 verse 2. Again, God says to Moses, you

    Exodus 7:2

  140. shall speak all that. I command you and your brother,

  141. Aaron shall tell pharaoh to let the people of Israel, go out of

  142. this land. So again, God is commanding,

  143. Moses to go to pharaoh. And to say to Pharaoh, let my

  144. people go release them, so they would be free from slavery and

  145. oppression, but I want you to notice What God Says.

  146. Next verse 3, Exodus 7 verse 3 but I will harden Pharaoh's

    Exodus 7:3

  147. heart and though I multiply my son my signs and wonders in the

  148. land of Egypt, Pharaoh will not listen to you, then I will lay

  149. my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts.

  150. My people, the children. Turn of Israel.

  151. Out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.

  152. Did you see it? I will by grace and mercy.

  153. Bring my people out of the slavery of Egypt.

  154. How Through great acts of judgment.

  155. God is going to save his people. Through judgement.

  156. And there's two ways that I want you to see his judgment In this

  157. passage. The first is we see God's

  158. Sovereign judgement poured out on pharaoh.

  159. Look again, at verse 3, but I will harden, Pharaoh's heart.

  160. I will harden Pharaoh's heart. And no, I'll multiply my signs

  161. and wonders and land of Egypt, Pharaoh will not listen to you.

  162. In other words Moses I'm sending you on a Fool's errand.

  163. I'm asking you to go into Pharaoh's court and go before

  164. pharaoh and I'm asking you to tell him to let my people go and

  165. he's not going to listen. I'm going to send great acts of

  166. judgment and even still Pharaoh will not listen because I am

  167. going to harden his heart and these words should serve as a

  168. warning for us. I will harden Pharaoh's heart,

  169. you see? Because there are two sides to

  170. Pharaoh's hard hard in the story of Exodus.

  171. Here, we see an exodus 73 that God says that he will be the one

  172. to harden, Pharaoh's heart. Later in Exodus chapter 7 verse

    Exodus 7:14

  173. 14. It says that Pharaoh's heart was

  174. already hard. And then one chapter over in

  175. Exodus, 8 verse 15, it says that Pharaoh hardened, his own heart.

    Exodus 8:15

  176. So in one verse God says, he's going to harden.

  177. Pharaoh's Heart. Another verse it says, Pharaoh's

  178. heart was already hard. And another verse it says that

  179. Pharaoh, was the one who hardened his own heart and so,

  180. which is it? Did God hardened Pharaoh's

  181. heart? And Pharaoh hardened, Pharaoh's

  182. heart. The answer that question should

  183. sober us. Because the answer is both.

  184. The greatest act of judgment that God could give us as his

  185. created people. Is to leave us alone and the

  186. hardness of our own hearts and allow our hearts to become

  187. harder and harder and more calloused, day by day.

  188. Apostle, Paul. Put it this way in Romans,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  189. chapter 1, Romans 1 verse 24. Therefore, God gave them up in

    Romans 1:24

  190. the lusts of their hearts to impurity to the dishonoring of

  191. their bodies among themselves because they exchanged the truth

  192. about God, for a lie. What is Paul saying?

  193. That people were already idolatrous, they had already

  194. exchanged, the truth of God, for a lie and in judgment, he gave

  195. them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity.

  196. In judgment. God gave Pharaoh up to the lusts

  197. of his own heart. A lust for power, a lust, for

  198. control. A lust for sovereignty over his

  199. own Nation. And God allowed him.

  200. To be consumed with himself. And in this way.

  201. Pharaoh's hard heart was hardened by our Sovereign God.

  202. He refused to acknowledge God's sovereignty and with each plague

  203. that God sent his heart became harder.

  204. So God sent great acts of judgment plagues one by one that

  205. served as judgment first over Pharaoh, why?

  206. To declare that he alone is The Sovereign one that God Alone is

  207. Lord of the world that he is Sovereign over every government,

  208. in every nation. He was displaying his power over

  209. the most powerful King of the most powerful Earthly Kingdom.

  210. All to remind, not only pharaoh. But his people. and all of us

  211. Generations, later of who's in charge, Because it is so easy to

  212. forget. And in this way, we're beginning

  213. to see that. As God poured out his judgment,

  214. it was also a Grace, a Grace for his people, in a Grace for you.

  215. And me, the second thing we see here in his judgment is in the

  216. plagues themselves as God, sends ten plagues of judgment.

  217. These great acts of judgment to redeem.

  218. His whole people to display his sovereignty to the whole world.

  219. Once you turn to Exodus 9 verse 14, Notice what it says.

    Exodus 9:14

  220. For this time, I will send all my plagues on you yourself and

  221. on your servants and your people.

  222. So that you may know that there is none like me in all the

  223. Earth. Why did God send 10 plagues?

  224. Why do it this way? Why display his power and his

  225. judgment in this specific way because God sent ten plagues to

  226. show his softy. Not only over the nation and

  227. government of Egypt, but to display his power and

  228. sovereignty over their false gods as well.

  229. You see each plague corresponds with one of the Egyptian gods

  230. And so as God turned the Nile River into blood, he was

  231. displaying his Sovereign power over the Egyptian god of the

  232. Nile. As God sent frogs, he was

  233. displaying his power over the Egyptian god of fertility, who

  234. had the head of a frog as he sent Nats and turned dust into

  235. knots. He was displaying his power of

  236. the Egyptian god of the Earth. As he sent flies, it was to

  237. display his Sovereign. Power of the Egyptian.

  238. Fly God as he killed all of the livestock in, Egypt is

  239. displaying his power over the Egyptian bull God, as he sent

  240. boils display his Sovereign. Power of the Egyptian goddess of

  241. epidemics, as he sent hail to display a sovereign power of the

  242. Egyptian, god, of storms, as he sent locusts to display a

  243. sovereign power of the Egyptian, god of Cops.

  244. And as he sent Darkness, to cover the land to display, his

  245. Sovereign power of the Egyptian, god of the sun.

  246. To save his people, he sent great acts of judgment and this

  247. is the question I want you to ask.

  248. As he sent each plague. What was the purpose of these

  249. great acts of judgment? As one commentator, put it.

  250. False gods aren't real. So who is he actually judging

  251. what's the point who is all of this for You see there is Grace

  252. woven into God's judgement. Why send 10 plagues?

  253. Because he was showing his own people that he alone is the one

  254. true. God.

  255. That he alone can be trusted that he alone is powerful.

  256. And mighty, you see, because during their captivity, all of

  257. this false worship have begin to seep into their own Hearts as

  258. well. And while they had been enslaved

  259. to Pharaoh, that also become enslaved to false worship.

  260. So God by his grace is pouring out judgment on false gods that

  261. don't exist to show his own people that I am the one true

  262. God and I'm pouring out my judgement to bring you back to

  263. bring you back for myself. He is showing the world that he

  264. is the one true God who will stop at nothing to redeem, his

  265. people for himself. And so now, I want you to turn

  266. to our passage Exodus chapter 12, again, you can turn their

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  267. Bible, you can use the bulletin, Exodus 12, and I want you to

  268. turn to verse 12. All of these plagues led up to

  269. the tenth and final plague, the death of the firstborn son.

  270. It's described many ways and many times, Exodus for and

  271. exodus 11 and exodus 12. But I want you to see the way

  272. it's summarized in Exodus 12 verse 12, God says, for I will

    Exodus 12:12

  273. pass through the land of Egypt that night and I will strike all

  274. the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both, man and Beast.

  275. Notice what it says next, and on the gods of Egypt, I will

  276. execute judgments. I and the Lord.

  277. With this final plague, God executed judgment over false

  278. worship once and for all. To declare that he alone is the

  279. Holy One. And he alone is worthy of

  280. praise. You see, in the midst of

  281. judgment is Grace so even Generations.

  282. Later we would hear this story once again and we too would see

  283. that he alone is the Holy One. They would not be tempted to bow

  284. down to Earthly Kings and Earthly kingdoms like Pharaoh,

  285. nor to worship false gods. Like all of the Egyptian gods,

  286. but we would be reminded through judgment and by grace that God

  287. Alone can be trusted so the second thing, the last thing I

  288. want you to see this morning not only want you see The Sovereign

  289. Grace of God through judgment, but I want you to see The

  290. Sovereign Grace of God, through our salvation, What is so

  291. startling about this last plague?

  292. That God would kill all of the firstborn sons in the land of

  293. Egypt, is that death was sent to every house in Egypt every

  294. house. Did you see it?

  295. Look again at verse 12 for, I will pass through the land of

  296. Egypt that night. I will strike all of the

  297. firstborn and the land of Egypt. If you're not paying attention,

  298. you might miss it. He is sending death to every

  299. house. That is every Egyptian house And

  300. every Israeli house. Every house and the land will be

  301. struck with death everyone. And it's only and those houses

  302. where they have sacrificed a lamb and sprinkled the blood

  303. over the door. Only in those houses, will the

  304. people inside be spared. Look with me.

  305. Verse 13, Exodus 12 verse 13. The blood shall be a sign for

    Exodus 12:13

  306. you on the houses where you are. When I see the blood, I will

  307. pass over you and no play will befall you to destroy you. when

  308. I strike the land of Egypt, Again, I want this to sink into

  309. you, particularly, if you are somewhat familiar with the

  310. story. Because it could be a part of

  311. the story that you've never really paid much attention to.

  312. Death came to every house. And it was only by the blood of

  313. the sacrifice lamb that the people of Israel were saved.

  314. I want you to ask. Why would God do it that way?

  315. Why do it that way? I mean, couldn't the angel of

  316. death been more precise. Couldn't God no and what house

  317. or people who are Egyptian and people are who are his own, the

  318. Hebrews. Why do it this way?

  319. What are we to make of this? well, I think we are to make of

  320. this that judgment comes for us all For all of us.

  321. We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  322. Judgment was coming to every family and Egypt weather Hebrew

  323. origin. Because judgment comes to us

  324. all. Every one of us, regardless of

  325. your background, your nationality, where you come

  326. from? Everyone of us, have sinned and

  327. fall short of the glory of God. Every one of us have committed

  328. treason against the high King. Every one of us, goes our own

  329. way of every one of us says no, my way is better.

  330. Every one of us, has rejected the authority and sovereignty

  331. and Majesty of God and judgment comes to us all Judgment came to

  332. every house in Egypt that night and yet in this great Act of

  333. judgment. God is also a god of Grace.

  334. And to his own people. The people of Israel.

  335. Though, in so many ways they were idolatrous too.

  336. He provided a way of salvation. A way of Grace, he provided a

  337. substitute to take on the Judgment that was coming to

  338. their land. Look at verse 21.

  339. Then Moses called all the Elders of Israel and said to them go

  340. and select lamb through yourselves according to your

  341. Clans and kill the Passover Lamb.

  342. Each Hebrew household chose its own lamb.

  343. It had to be perfect spotless and without blemish because the

  344. only acceptable sacrifice for sin must be perfect.

  345. And once they selected a lamb, they kept it until a time that

  346. there was to be killed as a sacrifice.

  347. Look at verse 22. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip

  348. it in the blood that is in the Basin and touched a lentil and

  349. two-door post with the blood that is in the Basin.

  350. None of you will go out of the door of his house until the

  351. morning for the Lord will pass through to a strike the

  352. Egyptians, but when he sees the blood on the lentil and on the

  353. two-door post, the Lord will pass over the door, will not

  354. allow the Destroyer to enter your houses and strike you.

  355. They were instructed to take the blood of the lamb and put it

  356. over the door post, so that when judgment came judgment would

  357. pass over them. This is the story of the first

  358. Passover. God, sending judgment for sin.

  359. And God passing over his own people, not because of them.

  360. But because of a substitutionary sacrifice made for them so that

  361. judgment would pass over them. You hear that?

  362. And you think seems so strange if we take it at face value, And

  363. in some ways it even seems barbaric to kill an innocent

  364. lamb. And to shed its blood and to

  365. Painted over a door. And yet, for Generations, this

  366. story was told over and over and over again.

  367. Every year they kept the Feast of Passover because they were so

  368. prone to forget that, God is who he says, he is that he is The

  369. Sovereign one full of both judgment and of Grace that it is

  370. by his grace and Sovereign judgment alone that we are

  371. saved. And so, every year, they would

  372. keep the feast. Look at verse 24.

  373. You shall observe this, right? As a statute for you, and for

  374. your son's forever. And when you come to the land

  375. that the Lord will give you his promise, you shall keep the

  376. service and your children will say, what do you mean by this?

  377. And verse 27, you shall say? It is the sacrifice of the

  378. Lord's Passover free passed over the houses and the people of

  379. Israel and Egypt when he struck the Egyptians, but Spirit our

  380. houses, Every year they would kill.

  381. An innocent Passover Lamb. And every year they would keep

  382. the feast. So much so that it became part

  383. of who they were. Pirate part of their own faith

  384. and even their Consciousness about who God is and what he had

  385. done for them. Part of their understanding of

  386. what it really meant to be part of the Hebrew people.

  387. One of God's chosen ones that they were, they had been

  388. declared Israel, they had been declared God's firstborn son

  389. because of his grace And because of his judgment.

  390. So much, so that many years later, when John, the Baptist

  391. saw Jesus coming towards him, the Jordan River.

  392. He only saw one thing. And he said, behold.

  393. The Lamb of God has come to take away the sin of the world.

  394. What did John see? He saw God's judgment and Grace

  395. once again and he saw a substitute walking towards him.

  396. you see, there were generations of passover's that were

  397. celebrated Until one day Jesus gathered with his disciples in

  398. the upper room to celebrate the Passover again.

  399. The gospels tell us that as they made preparations to celebrate

  400. the Passover, Jesus sent his disciples out to go and gather

  401. everything. And as they gathered everything,

  402. they were needed, they met a man who led them through the city

  403. and prepared a place for them in the upper room.

  404. So they could celebrate the Passover meal together.

  405. The gospel of Mark tells us that as they were eating together

  406. that Jesus Took bread, and after he blessed it, he broke it.

  407. And he said, take this is my body and then he took a cup.

  408. And when he had given, thanks, he gave it to them a drink.

  409. And he said, this is the blood of my Covenant, which is poured

  410. out for many and all of the gospels give us every detail of

  411. that Passover meal. What they ate and what they

  412. drank and what Jesus said Ed every element of the Passover is

  413. there, except for one crucial piece, what is it?

  414. Where's the lamb? They don't have a lamb.

  415. Where's the lamb? But when Jesus said, this is my

  416. body given for you. This is my blood poured out for

  417. you. Jesus was saying I am the

  418. Passover Lamb. I have given my own body for you

  419. and I have shed my own blood. So as judgment comes, it will

  420. pass over you once and for all Jesus is the true and greater

  421. Passover Lamb. The one God has given to us as

  422. our substitute. Because friends judgment is

  423. coming. Judgments coming to us all and

  424. every one of us has fallen short of the glory of God because

  425. every one of us has sinned. But thanks be to God to the

  426. midst of his judgment. He has given us Grace in his

  427. son. He has given us the true

  428. Passover Lamb Jesus Christ, who shed his blood for you.

  429. And for me so that death would pass over us.

  430. This is why the Apostle Paul said Christ, Our Passover has

  431. been sacrificed for us. And so, I wonder.

  432. If you were there at that first Passover, what would you have

  433. done? You heard Moses giving you these

  434. instructions. We thought that sounds strange

  435. Moses. Are, would you have listened and

  436. obeyed and seen death pass over your household?

  437. And the same way. Also, I wonder, how will you

  438. respond to John? The Baptist's declaration,

  439. Behold, the Lamb of God who's come to take away the sin of the

  440. world. Will you behold Jesus as your

  441. Passover Lamb? And this morning, will you claim

  442. his blood alone? It's that judgment would pass

  443. over you. How will you respond?

  444. because this morning, we once again have been invited to keep

  445. the feast, And just, as Jesus is the true and greater Passover

  446. Lamb the Lord's Supper. This communion is the true and

  447. greater Passover. The feast where we come together

  448. once again to remember and Proclaim that Christ has died.

  449. Christ is risen and Christ will come again.

  450. He is our Passover and we come now into his presence, according

  451. to his judgment falling on his own son because of his grace.

  452. Let's pray Our Father in heaven. Would you now prepare our

  453. hearts? To keep the feast.

  454. And that in keeping the feast that we would remember once

  455. again. The great hope that we have and

  456. you Jesus Christ as our Passover Lamb.

  457. As we come to this table, we bring the so many ways that we

  458. are. Just like the people of Israel

  459. prone to forget who you are and what you have done for us and

  460. prone to wander and worship other gods.

  461. And so n coming forward this morning to your table.

  462. Help us to come by grace. Help us to calm knowing that

  463. your blood has covered us and help us to come and Proclamation

  464. that you are The Sovereign one, the Holy One, the mighty one,

  465. And that by your Sovereign, Grace, you have come and

  466. judgment for our salvation. Be with us.

  467. Now as we come together, as your people at the table of the king

  468. in Jesus name, amen. Be with us.

  469. Now as we come together, as your people at the table of the king

  470. in Jesus name, amen.
