  1. If you would, please stand for the reading of God's word.

  2. We're going to spend the next couple of Sunday's looking at

  3. this section of scripture in Exodus 15.

  4. Called the song of Moses. So, the song of Moses the

  5. Israelites and Miriam, it's an amazing Passage.

  6. It tells us the experience of worship that the Israelites had

  7. just as they had crossed the Red Sea.

  8. One of the great challenges for us is that we already know the

  9. end of the story and because we know the end of this story, we

  10. don't enter into it in a way that allows us to be overwhelmed

  11. by what they experienced and want you to think about this for

  12. a moment. This people the Israelites

  13. 600,000 men plus women and children had their backs against

  14. the water. There was no way out unless a

  15. divine intervention, the Divine Miracle, Divine rescue would

  16. take place and then those people, well, over a million,

  17. I'm sure stepped onto dry land, that had been land, that was

  18. holding the sea and they walked across as God Faithfully held

  19. back, the wall. As of water on each side.

  20. This is the story put to music at the people saying in

  21. celebration of that Divine. Miracle that Divine rescue.

  22. Listen now as I read, From Exodus 15 1221, then Moses, and

  23. the people of Israel sang, this song, to the Lord saying I will

  24. sing to the Lord. For he has, triumphed gloriously

  25. the horse and his rider. He has thrown into the sea, the

  26. Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.

  27. This is my God, and I will praise him.

  28. My father's God, and I will exalt him.

  29. Board is a man of war. The Lord is his name Pharaoh's

  30. chariots and his hosts. He cast into the sea and his

  31. chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.

  32. The floods covered them. They went down Into the Depths

  33. like a stone, your right hand O Lord glorious and power.

  34. Your right hand O Lord, shatters the enemy in the greatness of

  35. your majesty. You overthrow your adversaries,

  36. you send out your Fury. It consumes them like stubble at

  37. the blast of your nostrils. The water piled up the flood

  38. stood up and a heap. The deeps congealed in the heart

  39. of the sea. The enemy said, I will pursue.

  40. I will overtake. I will divide the spoil.

  41. My desire shall have its fill of them, I will draw my sword.

  42. My hand shall destroy them. You blew with your wind, the sea

  43. covered them. They sank likely Add in the

  44. mighty Waters. Who is Like You?

  45. O Lord among the gods who is like, you Majestic in Holiness.

  46. Awesome and glorious Deeds doing wonders.

  47. You stretched out your right hand the Earth swallowed them.

  48. You have lad in your steadfast, love the people whom you have

  49. redeemed. You have guided them by your

  50. strength to your holy Abode. The people's have heard they

  51. tremble. Pangs of sees the inhabitants of

  52. philistia now are the the chiefs of Edom dismayed, trembling

  53. seizes the leaders of Moab, all the inhabitants of Canaan, have

  54. melted away Terror and Dread fall upon them because of the

  55. greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your

  56. people, O Lord passed by to the people pass.

  57. By whom you have purchased, you will bring them in and plant

  58. them on your own Mountain. The place O Lord, which you have

  59. made for your Abode, the sanctuary O Lord with your

  60. hands. Established the Lord will reign

  61. forever and ever for when the horses of pharaoh with his

  62. chariots and his Horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought

  63. back the Waters of the sea upon them.

  64. But the people of Israel walked on dry ground and the midst of

  65. the sea, then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron

  66. took a tambourine in her hand and all the women went out after

  67. her with tambourines and dancing and Miriam saying to them sing

  68. to the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously.

  69. SLI the horse and his rider. He has thrown into the sea.

  70. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God, please be

  71. seated. Music is powerful.

  72. It's personal. some of you would say you have a song, That's my

  73. song. Some of you take bulletins on a

  74. certain Sunday and highlighted and say to somebody that you

  75. love loves you. I went to this him, this piece

  76. of music at my memorial service. It's a privilege to sit with

  77. families as they move through that.

  78. And here, the different songs that one who's now going to be

  79. with the warlord loves. This is my song, the summer.

  80. Many of you will travel by yourself or with family and you

  81. may have a playlist. I have them in my phone, when I

  82. go on a mission trip, there's certain songs.

  83. I want to listen to my song. I remember being on a date late

  84. in high school. It was a second date.

  85. The first date went really well and the second date was actually

  86. going really well, too. We were driving.

  87. I'm not sure where we were going but we were driving in the music

  88. was light. I was speaking to her her name

  89. is Becky and then she goes She shushed me.

  90. And she said, this is my song Turned Up the Radio.

  91. There wasn't a third days there wasn't because I couldn't get

  92. over being shushed. It was the song that she'll

  93. selected as her song. This is my song.

  94. I want to ask you to do something today and actually

  95. want to ask you to do something each day this week.

  96. I want you to ask the Holy Spirit to help you evaluate.

  97. Your own personal worship of the Lord.

  98. Sunday after Sunday, we gather together in this place and what

  99. a gift it is, and Sunday after Sunday, we all exit and go to

  100. various places. There are lots of things that we

  101. can think about. And evaluate we ask questions,

  102. like what did you think of the sermon?

  103. How was Sunday morning Community.

  104. Today, there are lots of things that we ask and talk about but I

  105. wonder how often do you and you have to have the holy spirit's

  106. help. Ask him to help.

  107. Up, you evaluate the way in which you worshipped.

  108. If you are a member of our church, you made a vow of much

  109. like the men this morning made vows.

  110. And one of your vows is I promise to support this church

  111. and its worship and work to the best of my ability.

  112. So, Sunday, after Sunday, do you ever pause to say how?

  113. God did I bring you? Glory today we're tempted to

  114. evaluate everything else. Whether we like the song or

  115. didn't like a song, whether it makes it into our Stubby want in

  116. a memorial service are not, but what about your own personal

  117. worship of the Lord, as you've gathered collectively with the

  118. larger body? Have you been distracted?

  119. Horizontally by many things? Have you been distracted?

  120. Internally by many things. Many burdens that you've brought

  121. in. This is important.

  122. And what I want you to do this week is I want you to come back

  123. to Exodus 15 and like a song that you love that, you listen

  124. to over and over on. Repeat I want you to read this

  125. song, this song Exodus 15 12 21, many times during the week.

  126. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you answer these two questions.

  127. What informs the songs? We sing because there's a lot to

  128. be seen in this text. What informs the songs that we

  129. sing? Why do we select these songs and

  130. sing them and desire to do? So with full voice for the glory

  131. of God? The second question is what

  132. informs the way you sing? What are the forms of the way

  133. you sing from one Sunday to the next?

  134. Is it always the same? Are there moments when there's

  135. something sweeter or moments when it's not as sweet.

  136. Because each day with Jesus is not necessarily sweeter than the

  137. day before. What informed you this morning

  138. as you entered into this place of worship, To bring God glory

  139. at his invitation. I want to give you a few

  140. observations from the text that I want you to take with you this

  141. week. And next Sunday we're going to

  142. be right back in this passage but I want you to have spent

  143. time with the Holy Spirit thinking about what saturates

  144. this song. What is it that this song really

  145. is about? How can what we see in print and

  146. this early section of the scriptures?

  147. The book of Exodus that can inform the way we sing as well

  148. as what? We sing.

  149. So there's three things I want you to listen.

  150. For first, it's fear and Freedom.

  151. The second is, how God centered this song is.

  152. And lastly how this song tells a story, more than that, it tells

  153. our story. Let's begin by talking about

  154. fear and freedom, There's two fears that are present in the

  155. passage. The first has to do with fear of

  156. the enemy, it's not printed in your bulletin.

  157. So grab the blue Pew. Bible that is in front of you

  158. and turn to Exodus 14. This is where Paul Goble was

  159. last week in the excellent sermon that he preached.

  160. That was so deeply encouraging to my soul.

  161. They are a people that has experienced the Deliverance of

  162. God away. From pharaoh and the Egyptians.

  163. But now they was heart has been hardened.

  164. He's changed his mind. And there is a fear that this

  165. people is experiencing as their backs are against the water.

  166. Look with me and X is 14, 10. When Pharaoh, Drew near the

  167. people of Israel lifted up their eyes, this is important where

  168. our eyes are greatly affects How We Worship the Lord, where our

  169. eyes, go, where our eyes are fixed, greatly affects The Way

  170. We Worship the Lord. When Pharaoh Drew near the

  171. people of Israel lifted up their eyes and behold the Egyptians

  172. were marching after them and they feared greatly the people

  173. of Israel cried out to the Lord. So In Their Fear is their eyes

  174. are lifted up. They see this the most powerful

  175. Nation on Earth, the ones who kept them in slave for over 400

  176. years. They see this Mighty Army coming

  177. towards them and their backs are against the water.

  178. There is no place. They can go.

  179. There's nothing that they can do.

  180. So they cried to the Lord. Then they speak to Moses in the

  181. complaint, is it because there are no graves in Egypt that

  182. you've taken us away to die in the wilderness?

  183. What have you done to us? And bringing us out of Egypt, is

  184. not this. What we said to you in Egypt,

  185. leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians.

  186. Do you see and Paul said the so well last week, how irrational

  187. their minds have become and so quickly we would rather be in

  188. Egypt as slaves. The now with our backs against

  189. the water, facing this enemy, the Egyptians that are

  190. approaching for, it would have been better for us to serve the

  191. Egyptians than to die. In the wilderness verse 13 and

  192. Moses said to the people fear, not stand firm.

  193. See, the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today

  194. for the Egyptians whom you see today.

  195. You shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you and

  196. you have only to be silent. Man serving as elders and

  197. deacons in his church, there are going to be moments.

  198. When you're shepherding an individual who feels as if their

  199. life is back against the water moments, where they feel like

  200. unless God does something Divine.

  201. Unless there is a miracle that takes place, this isn't going to

  202. work out. You're going to the privilege

  203. like Moses of standing firm with them, and urging them to stand

  204. strong. It might not be just an visual

  205. it might be a corporate reality that we face as a church in this

  206. country in this world where it's growing darker and darker and

  207. more full of decay Where our eyes going to go, where RI our

  208. eyes, as Leaders going to go, they've got to remain fixed on

  209. Jesus. The first fear was the fear of

  210. the enemy. But there's a second fear that

  211. takes place with their bags, against the water.

  212. With the Enemy approaching with the only thought that unless God

  213. does something, we are all going to die here in the wilderness.

  214. They cried to the Lord, they were afraid, they were

  215. terrified. But God did show up.

  216. There's not a man not even Moses who could have imagined what was

  217. about to happen. There wasn't a person.

  218. Who in their wildest imagination could have thought.

  219. This see that we are backed up against is about to part and it

  220. will be wide enough and dry enough for us to move through to

  221. the other side. But God does show up.

  222. The waters part. The fear of the enemy.

  223. Is now going to be replaced at least for a little while.

  224. Buy a greater fear. And that is the fear of the one

  225. who is able to do immeasurably more than we imagined, ask, or

  226. think this is where you begin to see how profoundly saturated.

  227. This song is with the glory of God, this song is god-centered,

  228. it's not centered on them, it's not centered on Moses for sure.

  229. Centered on God and you see as this god-centered focus makes

  230. its way into the lyrics of the song.

  231. How powerfully they describe him?

  232. Look with me at verse 6 of Exodus, 15, your right hand.

  233. Oh Lord, glorious and power. Your right hand.

  234. O, Lord shatters the enemy verse 7, in the greatness of your

  235. majesty, you overthrow your adversaries, you send out your

  236. Fury. It consumes them like stubble.

  237. Forsake at the blast of your nostrils.

  238. Is that an amazing description at the blast of your nostrils?

  239. Holy God at the blast of your nostrils.

  240. The waters piled up the flood stood up in a heap, the deeps

  241. congealed in the heart of the sea.

  242. Look with me at verse 12, you stretched out your right hand

  243. and the Earth swallowed them, the very same.

  244. God that That you have been singing to today is the same.

  245. God, they were singing to the very same God that you are

  246. crying out to you as your back is against.

  247. The water is the one they were crying out to this.

  248. God, overwhelmed them, overwhelmed, the sea, and

  249. ultimately overwhelmed, the enemy, the Egyptians.

  250. So what happened? Look with me back into Exodus.

  251. 14 go to verse 31 Israel saw the great power that the Lord used

  252. against the Egyptians. Now, let's not run over that too

  253. fast. This God, this power.

  254. This reality is not a metaphor for some neat story, it's a real

  255. story. It's our story the Living God

  256. did this to that. See the Living God did this.

  257. For the people of Israel. The Living God did this against

  258. his enemy. He swallowed them up.

  259. The NIV says he hurled them into the sea.

  260. So what did this do to them back to 1431?

  261. Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the

  262. Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord

  263. and they believed in the Lord. And in his servant Moses, That's

  264. the second fear. The first fear was the fear of

  265. the enemy. Their backs are against the

  266. water, the only place they can turn and go as into the water.

  267. That's not an option, they will drowned, they can't move

  268. forward, and fight this enemy, it's too powerful.

  269. Their backs are against the water, but now the Lord has done

  270. it. the only one who could this great God leads them over a

  271. million of them through this wall on both sides of water and

  272. they get to the other side and it says they were fearful, the

  273. fear here is a fear that is of reverence and awe and shock and

  274. frankly what is profoundly missing in the church today.

  275. The intimacy we have with God, which is real.

  276. He lives in us should never minimize the awe and wonder we

  277. have of who he is. Remember.

  278. And I think Paul alluded to this last week when Jesus was on the

  279. boat asleep and the storm came, they eventually cried out to

  280. Jesus. Don't you care that we are

  281. drowning Jesus stood up and he hush the storms and the Sea and

  282. they were calm, he was powerful over it.

  283. And Mark tells us they said in fear who is this man who is this

  284. man that even the wind and the Sea obey?

  285. every song we sing together in this church, every song you sing

  286. to the glory of God in your own private time.

  287. Should lead you to that place. It should lead you to that

  288. place. We see here in Exodus 15:11,

    Exodus 15:11

  289. they cry out in their song. Who Is Like You?

  290. O Lord, among the gods who is like, you Majestic in Holiness.

  291. Awesome. And glorious Deeds doing

  292. wonders, who is like him? Every song We Sing, the ones, we

  293. sing this morning, the ones, we'll see you next week.

  294. Every one of those songs should lead us to a place where we say,

  295. who Who is he? Who is like him and there should

  296. be a holy fear a reverence and all that's why when you enter

  297. into this place is our desire that immediately you recognize

  298. that there's something different.

  299. There's something different about this moment and this space

  300. as we come to worship him, we want to experience the familiar

  301. intimacy with god without ever losing the And wonder of his

  302. Transcendence and his Holiness. That's why fear and freedom Mark

  303. our worship. Go back up to verse 1.

  304. Now listen for the freedom that is in the voice of Moses, the

  305. Israelites and then later from the voice of Miriam, then Moses

  306. and the people of Israel sang. This song to the Lord saying I

  307. will sing to the Lord. For he has, triumphed gloriously

  308. the horse and his rider, he is thrown into the sea, that's the

  309. opening line. It's also.

  310. What Miriam sings go to the last text, the last verse in the text

  311. were looking at this morning, Miriam sang to them, sing to the

  312. Lord for he has, triumphed gloriously the horse and his

  313. rider, he is thrown into the sea.

  314. As you look at this song and play it over and over this week,

  315. in your mind with the spirits help.

  316. See the freedom that is here. Ask God to show you and enable

  317. you to feel the freedom that they felt when they were on the

  318. other side of the sea. And their eyes look back across

  319. the water. They saw the Egyptians who have

  320. been in golfed by the water that had been split apart for them

  321. and they were dead. The enemy that had enslaved

  322. them. The enemy that had brought down

  323. tremendous oppression for over 400 years was no longer a

  324. threat. They had been set free and in

  325. Freedom, they lifted their voices.

  326. Fear of the holy God, freedom in him.

  327. The holy God, this him. So god-centered.

  328. It tells a story. And the great hymns and the

  329. great pieces of music in the church that we sing ones.

  330. That will be newly, written ones that are ancient the great ones.

  331. All, tell a story, but the story isn't like a bland history book.

  332. The stories actually more like a musical.

  333. It's like this narrative that has been written where God who

  334. created us, the sing brings us into moments of incredible

  335. pressure and fear when we have our backs against the water.

  336. And when we do, and there's nowhere else to go, and we're

  337. coming to the end of ourselves. We cry out to the one, and only

  338. one who can save us. And he does what only his Divine

  339. hand can do. He rescues us.

  340. Our worship. Must be saturated.

  341. Out of that kind of desperation, where we don't forget, what we

  342. have been saved from for as great as this story of The

  343. Exodus is for, as great as this story of the Red Sea.

  344. Being part of it is, it's not the greatest story of the Bible.

  345. The greatest story of the Bible is that this same Father, Son

  346. and Holy Spirit are going to do everything that's necessary.

  347. To purchase his people once and for all.

  348. Is that unfolds Jesus is going to find his back against the

  349. cross. And the walls of God's Wrath

  350. that have been held back until that moment are going to be

  351. poured out on Jesus. What you and I deserve to be

  352. engulfed in in the very righteous pure wrath of God,

  353. it's not going to hit us It's going to hit his only son.

  354. His only son knows it's coming and so in the garden, he prays

  355. father. If you were willing take this

  356. cup from me yet, not my will be done but yours and it was the

  357. will of the father to pour out all of his Wrath.

  358. Wrath poured out for the sin of his people. that we could walk

  359. safely and its presence forever. Friend.

  360. When you consider as a believer in Jesus, what it means to

  361. worship Him to the best of your ability?

  362. The only way that's possible is, if God gives you and gives me an

  363. overwhelming sense of who he is, what should create holy,

  364. reverence all and fear. But at the same time of Freedom

  365. that we come into this place, knowing that we are singing to

  366. the one who has done everything necessary to set us free now and

  367. forever. As you play this song over and

  368. over this week. Listen for fear.

  369. Listen for Freedom. Look at how saturated it is, how

  370. god-centered it is. And then see something that is

  371. amazing to me. And the question of what is your

  372. song? Is better asked of Christians,

  373. who is your song? For that, opening stanza verse

  374. to the people cried out. The Lord is my strength and my

  375. song. Our Song is not just theology.

  376. Its identity. What we deserved we haven't

  377. received when we just go through the motions.

  378. Of worship. It is not pleasing to the Lord.

  379. What's pleasing to the Lord. As we read, when we recognized

  380. by his work in our lives, our desperation for him, our backs

  381. were against the water. The water of God's Wrath.

  382. It was poured out on his son. All of it.

  383. And that's why Jesus said it is finished.

  384. One person in history, we know that was profoundly impacted by

  385. the reality of the shore. Was Peter for before Christ said

  386. it is finished. Not long before Peter denied

  387. that he even knew him. Then not long after after.

  388. Jesus had rose from the dead there on the shoreline is Jesus

  389. cooking breakfast for the disciples.

  390. Do you think it was just familiarity that led Peter to

  391. jump out of the boat? Or do you think there was an

  392. amazing awe and reverence and fear, fear and freedom?

  393. Those are important parts of our worship.

  394. Seeing how sinnard it must be on God.

  395. And seeing the story that we are a part of is really important, I

  396. cannot wait to see what the Lord shows you this week.

  397. As you plan to enter back into this place to worship the same

  398. one. Moses, the Israelites and Miriam

  399. were singing to Father in heaven.

  400. Spend a beautiful morning. We have raced to this place and

  401. are tempted to race away because that's the world that we live

  402. in, and it's so easy to conform to it.

  403. Father, I do pray through the powerful work of your spirit

  404. that even as we lift our voices in this final Anthem, we really

  405. would take the heart. Exodus 15, we really would spend

  406. time in touring into it asking, your spirit to illuminate.

  407. What's there that? It might inform us.

  408. In what we should sing. But also the way we should sing.

  409. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

  410. Please stand. In what we should sing.

  411. But also the way we should sing. We pray this in Jesus name.

  412. Amen. Please stand.
