  1. Fable, would you please stand for the reading of God's word?

  2. We continue our series, through the life of Moses.

  3. In the book of Exodus this morning I'll be reading sections

  4. from three different chapters, Exodus 15 16 and 17 beginning

  5. and Exodus 15 verse 22. Then Moses made Israel's set out

    Exodus 15:22

  6. from the Red Sea, and they went into the Wilderness of shur,

  7. they went three days in the wilderness and found no water

  8. when they came to Morocco. They could not drink the water

  9. of marah because it was bitter. Therefore, it was named the

  10. wrong. And the people grumbled against

  11. Moses saying, what will we drink?

  12. And he cried to the Lord and the Lord showed him a log and he

  13. threw it into the water and the water became sweet.

  14. They're the Lord made for them a statute and Rule and there.

  15. He tested them saying, if you will diligently, listen to the

  16. voice of the Lord, your God and do what is right in his eyes and

  17. give ear to his Commandments and keep all his statutes.

  18. I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the

  19. Egyptians for. I am the Lord your healer 16:1.

  20. And they set out from elim and all the congregation of the

  21. people of Israel came to the Wilderness of sin, which is

  22. between elim and Sinai on the 15th day of the second month

  23. after they had Departed, the land of Egypt.

  24. And the whole Congregation of the people of Israel grumbled

  25. against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and the people of

  26. Israel said to them would that we had died by the hand of the

  27. Lord and the land of Egypt. When we set by the meat pots and

  28. ate bread to the full for you have brought us out into this.

  29. Wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

  30. And the Lord said to Moses behold, I'm about to rain bread

  31. from heaven for you. And the people show go out and

  32. gather a day's portion every day that I'm a test him, whether

  33. they will walk in my law or not now 17:1, And all the

  34. congregation of the people of Israel, moved on from the

  35. Wilderness of sin by stages, according to the Commandment of

  36. the Lord and camped at ref eating but there was no water

  37. for the people to drink. Therefore, the people quarreled

  38. with Moses and said, give us water to drink and Moses said to

  39. them. Why do you quarrel with me?

  40. Why do you test the Lord? But the people thirsted there

  41. for water and the people grumbled against Moses and said

  42. why did you bring us up out of Egypt to kill us and our

  43. children and our livestock with thirst?

  44. So, Moses cried to the Lord. What shall I do with this

  45. people? They're almost ready to Stone

  46. me. The Lord said to Moses pass on

  47. before the people taking with you, some of the Elders of

  48. Israel and take in your hand, the staff with, which he struck

  49. the Nile and go behold. I will stand before you on the

  50. Rock at Horeb and you shall strike the Rock and water.

  51. So come out of it and the people will drink and Moses did.

  52. So in the side of the Elders of Israel and they called the name

  53. of the place Masa and Meribah. Because the quarreling of the

  54. people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying,

  55. is, the Lord among us or not. This is the word of the Lord.

  56. You may be seated. I want to begin this morning by

  57. asking you a question. Have you ever questioned?

  58. God, have you ever questioned him now?

  59. Before you answer that question in your heart, I want you to

  60. consider what I'm asking. You I'm not asking you have you

  61. ever questioned the existence of God, whether or not exist when

  62. I'm asking you is have you ever questioned him that his

  63. question, his character his care for you?

  64. His goodness, his Mercy because there's a big difference.

  65. It's one thing. To question the existence of

  66. God, does he exist? Is he real?

  67. It's quite another to question whether or not you actually want

  68. him to exist in the first place. I think if we're honest this

  69. morning, So many of us are right in this place of questioning is

  70. God questioning his goodness. His character questioning the

  71. things that he does in our lives.

  72. And we asked these questions, not from a place of intellectual

  73. doubt, We asked these questions from a place of disappointment.

  74. As if we're disappointed in him. A place of cynicism.

  75. A place of woundedness. So again, I ask you this

  76. morning, Have you ever questioned?

  77. God like that? The truth is, I think, if we're

  78. honest at some point in our lives, we will question God.

  79. Maybe you have in your past. Maybe you are right now.

  80. When we question God, what do you ask him?

  81. What are your questions? What are your doubts?

  82. What are your fears? What are your complaints?

  83. What are your grumbles? Book of Exodus.

  84. We read just after Israel was rescued miraculously and

  85. dramatically save from slavery in Egypt.

  86. They grumbled they complained and they questioned God.

  87. And this is what they asked is the Lord among us or not.

  88. In other words, is God still with us and what I want you to

  89. see this morning as that question is at the heart of our

  90. Every question is God still with us in this morning?

  91. I want you to see the way God has answered that question.

  92. I want to do this in two ways. First, I want you to see why we

  93. questioned God and second, I want you to see God's answer to

  94. our questions. So first, why do we question

  95. God? Look with me, Exodus 15 verse

    Exodus 15:22

  96. 22, We're told that Moses made Israel, set out from the Red Sea

  97. and they went into the Wilderness of shur and they went

  98. three days in the wilderness and found no water.

  99. Now, what you need to understand is where this passage finds

  100. itself in the context of the book of Exodus we're picking up

  101. right? Where we left off these last two

  102. weeks. God has just sent 10 great acts

  103. of judgment, 10 plagues. He's just redeemed his people

  104. through the Passover, and he has.

  105. Now rescued his people through the Red Sea.

  106. It just happened. Israel just witnessed God part

  107. the Red Sea. They just walked through it on

  108. dry land and they watch God, drown Pharaoh's Army in the

  109. water. And now they're wandering in the

  110. wilderness and just three days later they have no water.

  111. Verse 23 were told they came to a place called Mira.

  112. That they could not drink the water of Mara because it was

  113. bitter. Therefore it was named Mara.

  114. Now this is going to be important in just a second.

  115. You see? Because the name, Mara is a play

  116. on words, it means bitter. It means bitter.

  117. The water that they had come to was bitter.

  118. Now, I want you to put yourself in their shoes because it's easy

  119. for us to throw stones at them and think what on Earth could

  120. they be thinking? After all, they had seen God do,

  121. how could they now question him? But I want you to put yourself

  122. in their shoes and imagine what it was like to wander through

  123. the Wilderness with no water for three days.

  124. And now, the only water they could come to was like a salt

  125. pool almost taunting them mocking them, they couldn't

  126. drink that either. And yet, this is what we read,

  127. verse 24. And the people grumbled against

  128. Moses saying, what shall we drink?

  129. They just witnessed God rescue them and yet.

  130. Now they are grumbling against Moses and they're saying, what

  131. are we going to drink? They just use their voices to

  132. sing worship and praises to the Lord singing in.

  133. Proclaiming, the Lord is my strength and my song, and he has

  134. become my salvation. And now, they're using their

  135. voices to complain and to grumble.

  136. We're told here that Israel grumbled.

  137. We will read that word over and over and over again in our

  138. passages this morning. What does it mean?

  139. What does it mean that Israel grumbled well in Hebrew the word

  140. for grumbling here is sometimes translated murmur It's often

  141. associated in Hebrew with growling.

  142. In other words, like a dog, growls at his master because

  143. he's not getting a bone. Israel is growling at Moses.

  144. And ultimately, what we're going to see is there growling at God.

  145. Because they're not getting what they want.

  146. In fact, some translators have suggested that really the word

  147. Grumble here is not a strong enough word. because what Israel

  148. is doing is they are questioning God Translators are new English

  149. translation. Put it this way, they were not

  150. merely complaining. There are questioning God's

  151. abilities and motives and listen to this.

  152. The action is something like a parliamentary vote of no

  153. confidence. In other words in there,

  154. grumbling. They were expressing their doubt

  155. that God had any ability to care for them anymore.

  156. Again, think about this, they just watch God, rescue them from

  157. slavery, miraculously with a strong and mighty right hand.

  158. And now they're questioning his ability to care for them.

  159. Look with me verse 24. Once again, the people grumbled

  160. against Moses saying, what shall we drink?

  161. This question was not a point of inquiry.

  162. It wasn't out of curiosity. We're just wondering, oh, I

  163. wonder what we're gonna have to drink today.

  164. It was an interrogation. Adam.

  165. And what are we going to drink? They had lost confidence and

  166. Moses's ability to lead them and they lost trust and God's

  167. ability to care for them. And before you throw stones at

  168. them and think how could they be so faiths?

  169. Are you and I not the very same? after we have seen all that God

  170. has done for us, how quick we are to question his care for us.

  171. I wonder if that true for you as ever been true for you.

  172. Is it true for you this morning? As you consider the

  173. circumstances of your life, you say, why me?

  174. God, how could you let this happen?

  175. I thought you were good. I thought you were my father.

  176. Why aren't you taking care of me?

  177. Remember what this place was called.

  178. Marah, it means bitter. And I want to suggest to you

  179. that it was called bitter, not simply because the water was

  180. bitter. But because the people were

  181. bitter. You see?

  182. Because when we question God's care for us, when we questioned

  183. his fatherhood over us, when we say he's not taking care of me

  184. the way that I think I need to be taken care of.

  185. That causes us, not just to lose faith.

  186. Setting, the honest truth is it makes us bitter.

  187. It makes us bitter towards him. So this morning, I wanted to

  188. ask, how do you question God, but I want to ask like, is there

  189. any part of your heart and soul? If you're honest, this morning

  190. that has become bitter towards him.

  191. Any part of you that's even become resentful.

  192. Any part of you that has found itself in the quietness of your

  193. heart, when you are praying? And asking the Lord to meet you

  194. to answer your needs. There's a part of you that has

  195. become so bitter that you think why bother praying at all?

  196. He didn't answer my prayer, the way I wanted him before.

  197. Why would he answer my prayer now?

  198. You see in our hearts for just like these people.

  199. The question, God's care. And this leads to bitterness and

  200. this bitterness leads to us. Not just question his care for

  201. us but also his wisdom, I want you to look with me at x 2 the

  202. 16 verse 1. Just a chapter later, they're

  203. not just thirsty. They're hungry.

  204. In verse 1, we're told that they set out the congregation of

  205. people of Israel, came to the Wilderness of sin and their

  206. journey through this desert Wasteland inverse to the whole

  207. Congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses

  208. and Aaron. And the Wilderness here they are

  209. there. Grumbling again, it's the same

  210. exact word there growling against Moses and Aaron are

  211. questioning God verse 3. The people of Israel said, would

  212. that we have died by the hand of the Lord, in the land of Egypt.

  213. And we By the mid pallets and ate bread to the full and you've

  214. brought us into this Wilderness to kill our whole assembly with

  215. hunger. Now, they're grumbling is taking

  216. a darker tone. It's not just.

  217. What are we going to drink? How are you going to take care

  218. of us now? It's accusatory.

  219. And they're questioning not just God's care, but his wisdom.

  220. In other words, well, if God does care for us.

  221. Maybe the problem with all of the difficulties in our lives,

  222. is not that he doesn't care. It's that he doesn't know what

  223. he's doing. Listen what they're saying

  224. they're saying it would have been better for us to stay in

  225. Egypt and died there in slavery. At least when we were enslaved,

  226. we got to eat and drink to the full.

  227. But now that you've rescued us some rescue, this is right.

  228. We're just gonna die in the middle of the wilderness.

  229. Be here. What's underneath their

  230. questioning? God not just questioned his

  231. care, but question his wisdom. In other words, they're saying,

  232. we know better than you. We would have done it

  233. differently. See the heart of our

  234. questioning. God is Not Just bitterness but

  235. it's also Pride. And that's why they come to

  236. Moses, as their leader, they're coming to Moses.

  237. They're saying Moses, who put you in charge, we would have

  238. done this so much better than you.

  239. I wonder. Have you ever asked that

  240. question? if you ever question the leaders

  241. that God has put over you, So, many ways, I think we have now

  242. become a culture of complainers. Constantly complaining, over the

  243. people who make decisions in our lives.

  244. Some years ago, I was reading the New York Times article and

  245. the author was reflecting on this and the leadership crisis

  246. in our country. And he argued in part that our

  247. leadership is Crisis. Is not simply because we don't

  248. have good leaders, but it's because we've become terrible

  249. followers. And part of the problem.

  250. Is that we think we know better. It's one thing to complain

  251. against our leaders. But what if we Grumble against

  252. God himself? What if our complaint isn't

  253. actually against the leaders, whom God has put over us?

  254. What if our complaint is against God?

  255. This is exactly what Moses says in verse 8, look with me And

  256. verse 8, Moses says, well, what are we?

  257. In other words, what power do you think we have, what are we?

  258. Your grumbling is not against us, but against the Lord, in

  259. other words, if you want to blame someone, Don't blame me.

  260. Blame God. The ultimate was God, who is

  261. leading them through the Wilderness.

  262. It was God, who is carrying the way through the Red Sea, was

  263. God, who is now leading them through the desert?

  264. And how often and convenient it is for us to complain.

  265. About life, and our circumstances and difficulties

  266. in the leaders that God has put over us.

  267. And yet all the while, our qu complaint is against God

  268. himself. Not only are we bitter, not only

  269. are we prideful. but you see at the heart of our questioning

  270. God, Is unbelief. And a lack of faith that God is

  271. still good. I want you to look at verse 1 of

  272. chapter 17. The people of Israel became

  273. bitter and prideful. And now in chapter 17, we see

  274. all of this culminate where they have the audacity to put God on

  275. trial. Verse 1.

  276. All the congregation of the people of Israel, moved on from

  277. the Wilderness of sin by stages, according the Commandment of the

  278. Lord and they camped at rephidim.

  279. And there was no water. Once again, there's no water.

  280. Now, look at verse 2. Therefore the people quarreled

  281. with Moses and said, give us water to drink that word quarrel

  282. It's not the word from grumbles a new word there, grumbling had

  283. become quarreling. It means to contend to plea.

  284. It's a word that's used in a lawsuit.

  285. In other words, they were putting God on trial Look with

  286. me at verse 2 continues. Moses said to him, why do you

  287. quarrel with me? And why do you test the Lord?

  288. Why do you test the Lord? What's it mean to put the lord

  289. of the test? That means to put his

  290. faithfulness on trial. To question God and his

  291. faithfulness. And to say, God, you are going

  292. to have to prove yourself. You are the one who's on trial.

  293. They put the lord of the test and later we are told that they

  294. ask this question verse 7 is the Lord among us or not.

  295. Is the Lord among us or not? That question is at the heart of

  296. every one of our questions. Every doubt, every fear, every

  297. ounce of faithless, NE sin our souls.

  298. We wonder is God still with us? Is he still trustworthy?

  299. Is he still faithful? How will God answer that

  300. question? the second final thing, I want

  301. you to see this morning, How does God answer our question?

  302. I want you to see the way that he answers Israel's questions

  303. over and over and over again. What I want you to see this

  304. morning is that he was faithful at every turn.

  305. When Israel was Faith less. God was faithful.

  306. Look with me. Exodus 15 verse 25 as Israel and

    Exodus 15:25

  307. bitter towards God questioned him and said what are we going

  308. to drink? This was God's answer.

  309. Verse 25. Moses cried to the Lord, the

  310. Lord showed him a log and he threw it into the water and the

  311. water became sweet. Here is Israel and their

  312. faithlessness bitterly questioning God.

  313. And God changes the bitterness to sweetness.

  314. He answers their faithlessness with faithfulness.

  315. And as they put him to the test, testing his faithfulness, God

  316. responded with grace and mercy and his grace and mercy time and

  317. time again answered that they're putting him to the test by

  318. putting their faith to the test. Look with me verse 26.

  319. If you diligently, listen to the voice of the Lord and your God

  320. and do what is right in his eyes and give ear to his Commandments

  321. and put all his statutes. I will put none of the diseases

  322. on you and I'll put on the Egyptians for.

  323. I am the Lord your healer. What we will see is that God

  324. will meet the questions of Israel over and over and over

  325. again by answering with faithfulness.

  326. And as they tested, God's faithfulness, he responded by

  327. being faithful and in response, his grace put Israel to the test

  328. And response he tested their faith.

  329. And so, he does with you. And I See, the truth is, when we

  330. question God, we are putting him on trial. and yet if you've ever

  331. questioned God, you will find that God proves himself over and

  332. over and over again because he's unchangeable He is the faithful

  333. one. And even when we are faithless

  334. he is faithful still. And it's out of his faithfulness

  335. that he actually in response, puts our faith to the test, but

  336. there's a difference when we put God to the test, we do.

  337. So out of Doubt, when God puts us to the test, he does.

  338. So out of grace and mercy, because he's refining our faith

  339. and making it strong in the midst of every circumstance.

  340. You see? Because we are prone to view the

  341. character of God through our circumstances, but God has

  342. called us to view our circumstances through his

  343. character. And when we see that he is good

  344. and faithful, and he cares for our every need, we see that.

  345. Even in our suffering, he is our healer.

  346. So here the invitation of the Prophet Hosea who says come let

  347. us return to the Lord. He has torn us that he may heal

  348. us. He has struck us down and he

  349. will bind us up. But we see in the book of

  350. Exodus. And the life of Moses is that

  351. even in suffering and fat, it is through suffering that God heals

  352. us and perfects. Our faith and makes us strong He

  353. didn't just meet them in Exodus 15, he met them over and over

  354. again. In Exodus 16 is, they become

  355. hungry. God gave them Manna and Daily

  356. Bread. He provided there for every need

  357. every single day and inverse forward told that he was going

  358. to rain this bread from heaven and that he would test them

  359. whether they would walk and his law or not.

  360. And then in chapter 17, when the people of God, put God to a

  361. trial. And they quarreled with him and

  362. they asked, are you even with us?

  363. Are you among us or not? This is God's response.

  364. Exodus 17 verse 5. The Lord said to Moses pass on

    Exodus 17:5

  365. before the people and taking some of the Elders of Israel and

  366. take in your hand, the same staff, which he struck the Nile

  367. behold stand before, you and the rock of Horeb and you will

  368. strike the Rock and water will come out of it and the people

  369. will drink. What I want you to see this

  370. morning. Is that every turn God was

  371. there. At every question, God, had an

  372. answer. He was there turning bitter

  373. water and too sweet. Drink, he was there providing

  374. Daily Bread in the midst of desert.

  375. He was there springing water forth from Iraq and what I want

  376. you to hear this morning is he is still there.

  377. He's with you. and every trial, and every pain, and every

  378. sorrow. And every joy, and every

  379. struggle. And every fear God is with you.

  380. How do I know? because of what of the Apostle

  381. Paul tells us about this passage First Corinthians, 10 verse 1.

    1 Corinthians 10:1

  382. Paul tells us The people of Israel drank from this spiritual

  383. rock, that followed them, and The Rock was Christ.

  384. What is Paul saying? He's saying that the rock was

  385. Christ. That many years later, God would

  386. be put on trial once again. And Jesus Christ, the son of God

  387. would stand trial, he would be accused and beaten, and he would

  388. be crucified on a cross for our Salvation, he would be struck

  389. for you. And I so that all who believe in

  390. him would drink deeply the Waters of Salvation.

  391. And so, what is God's answer to our question?

  392. When we ask is the Lord among us or not, is God still with us?

  393. God has answered that question in the person of Jesus Christ.

  394. His name is Emmanuel, it means god with us.

  395. And so, when we asked what will we drink?

  396. Jesus says, come to me. All you who are thirsty and

  397. drink water of Living Water. When we asked, what are we going

  398. to eat? God says, Come and eat.

  399. And take. The body of Jesus Christ, the

  400. bread of life for your salvation.

  401. And when we ask is the Lord among us or not?

  402. Is he with us? God sends us Emmanuel.

  403. Jesus Christ, whose name means God is with us, he was with us

  404. and The Exodus. He is with us now and every

  405. trial and he will be with us to the end.

  406. Let's pray. Father in heaven.

  407. Help us to see that. You are a good gracious, caring

  408. and faithful father. And help us see that you have
