  1. Turn in your Bible now. To Exodus 19 or in your

  2. bulletin. I do encourage you to bring your

  3. own Bible as we are often moving around through different parts.

  4. We're in the midst of a series. On the life of Moses, which has

  5. this moving quickly through the book of Exodus.

  6. Selecting different places to sit and soak and this is one,

  7. that's very powerful. I want to remind you of what you

  8. just saying from verse 2 of Amazing Grace.

  9. Twas Grace, that taught My Heart To Fear.

  10. Well, you're about to hear in the word of God, is his people.

  11. Over a million of them and followed him as he led them

  12. through the Red Sea, and now they're at the foot of a

  13. mountain Mount Sinai and God is descending on that mountain, and

  14. it's terrifying. We know the end of the stories

  15. of sometimes we move. So, quickly through things

  16. without pausing to think, about what they really saw.

  17. In the truth is we can only imagine But they saw not just

  18. fire. They heard not just Thunder.

  19. They were witnessing. The very physical presence of

  20. God. As we read this.

  21. Think about those words that John Newton wrote was Grace that

  22. taught my heart to fear and Grace my fears relieved.

  23. The fear of God. Understanding it so much.

  24. So that the only place you know, you're safe is in the hand, the

  25. gracious hand and grip of the one, we rightly fear with

  26. reverence and all on the third day on the sorry, the third New

  27. Moon. After the people of Israel had

  28. gone out of the land of Egypt. On that day, they came into the

  29. Wilderness of Sinai they set up from rephidim and came into the

  30. Wilderness of Sinai. And they encamped in the

  31. wilderness, their Israel and camped before the mountains

  32. while Moses went up to God, the Lord called, to him out of the

  33. mountain saying, thus, you shall say to the house of Jacob and

  34. tell the people of Israel, you yourselves have seen what I did

  35. to the Egyptians and how I bore You On Eagle's Wings and brought

  36. you to myself. Now, therefore, if you will

  37. indeed obey my voice and keep my Covenant, you shall be my

  38. treasured. And among all peoples for all

  39. the Earth is mine and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests

  40. and a holy nation. These are the words that you

  41. shall speak to the people of Israel.

  42. So Moses came and called the Elders of the people and set

  43. before them. All these words that the Lord

  44. had commanded him. All the people answered together

  45. and said all that. The Lord has spoken.

  46. We will do and Moses reported the words of the people to the

  47. Lord. Lord and the Lord said to Moses

  48. behold, I am coming to you in a thick Cloud that the people may

  49. hear when I speak with you and may also believe you forever.

  50. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks.

  51. Be to God, please be seated. Monday night, we had our session

  52. meeting and at the beginning of our session meeting, we prayed

  53. over all the teams and individuals who are going on

  54. short-term trips, many have left now.

  55. High school students arrived in Africa, family trip to Africa is

  56. going soon. Then the Bahamas trip local

  57. missions happening every day. And one thing that's the danger

  58. is that we think we're just sending in there for our mission

  59. responsibilities are done. We pray for them.

  60. We remember we believe in the priesthood of all believers were

  61. all to be Engaged. Then we had three of our home

  62. Church missionaries. Share a bit of the life that

  63. they're living in one of the home Church missionaries.

  64. I'll keep his name out for security reasons.

  65. Said, I was teaching a student and a country where you can't

  66. Proclaim Christ. I was teaching English as a

  67. second language. And his students said, to me, I

  68. love Jesus pointing to the New Testament and then he said, but

  69. I hate God. Pointing to the Old Testament.

  70. Now, it's easy to see, just doesn't understand that.

  71. It's the same God God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit from all

  72. eternity. The god that's present on this

  73. mountain. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

  74. the trinity. But it's easy to not understand

  75. the connection between what's happening in the Old Testament

  76. and what's happening in the new with the Old Testament is

  77. anchoring is sin and pointing towards, I would guess that many

  78. of you would struggle, if you're honest, to make sense of that.

  79. And sometimes churches will even say it's not that important to

  80. preach these Old Testament, things just get to Jesus, but

  81. that's not what we're supposed to do.

  82. Because there's power in all the I love God's word but it's a

  83. fair question and it's one of us often.

  84. What does this have to do with me today?

  85. So, I want to tell you about my week in some of you as I tell,

  86. this are going to know. You're the one I'm talking about

  87. and don't laugh at something to be funny.

  88. I want you to know, I'm not going to call you out and I'm

  89. gonna ask the congregation when I say some of these things to

  90. stop looking at wondering. I wonder who it is.

  91. I knew it, it's them. Really go back to the public

  92. confession of sins morning then and just sit there for a while.

  93. We have all fallen short but my burden in doing this is to show

  94. you that no matter the break in your life, no matter the pain in

  95. your life, no matter the loss in your life, no matter the fear in

  96. your life, what we have just read that happened thousands of

  97. years ago at the foot of Mount Sinai and all Mount Sinai

  98. matters. Just before the session meeting.

  99. Me and another man met with another man, who's in a profound

  100. relapse? His alcoholism has surfaced the

  101. havoc in his own life and the wake of Destruction and that of

  102. his family is tremendous. We pray with him.

  103. What does this have to do with his struggle?

  104. On Tuesday, I meet with a pastor that I know who's saying.

  105. I'm struggling to even know if I'm called anymore because my

  106. family is in such turmoil later. I meet with a friend who says,

  107. we're just waiting to see what the results will be from another

  108. scan to see if the cancer is gone in remission, and being

  109. sober about that, not knowing what they will see, what does

  110. this have to do. With that scan, that's coming in

  111. the next week or so. Two parents call me.

  112. One has an adult child one, as a young child, the issues of the

  113. same Rebellion. One Rebellion seems a lot worse,

  114. because it seems to be a lifestyle choice.

  115. That is now going to be made and Conformity to the pattern of the

  116. world, which is so dark and decaying The other is just how

  117. do we protect our little one from becoming person who no

  118. longer is clinging to Christ who never cries out for Christ.

  119. I meet with the man. Who's lost his job.

  120. More than that, he's wondering if he's lost his sense of

  121. calling if he's missed it. I talked to a woman who's in the

  122. midst of infertility. And I cry with a young Covenant

  123. child in her church. Who's now in her late 20s.

  124. Who's so immersed in the Brokenness of our city in the

  125. injustices that she sees all around and she just looks like,

  126. what can we do? Are we doing what we should be

  127. doing? I hear about Nick Sloan has been

  128. battling iOS and that he's unable to fight anymore and the

  129. decision will be made. To move towards.

  130. No further assistance except pain management and then I

  131. talked with his wife yesterday because he's now in the presence

  132. of the Lord, praise God, but the wake of that grief is very, very

  133. real. What?

  134. Can Exodus 19. Say and speak to her and their

  135. children. My own life, my wife and I have

  136. a wonderful date. It's an hour and 45 minutes of

  137. some of the best conversation. We've had in a long time.

  138. And then she asked me something that reveals a weakness.

  139. Something I have failed to do, which I said, I would do in the

  140. next 20 minutes turns into something very different than

  141. what the first hour and 45 minutes was like, and I wish I

  142. could tell you, I said, oh, honey.

  143. Let's just run to the word and it's open.

  144. It's and we'll be okay, but we didn't.

  145. I was angry. And so is she?

  146. We're real people and so that night we slept in the same room,

  147. but there was a great distance between us until the Lord

  148. overwhelmed us with his humility.

  149. What does this have to do with that?

  150. Some of you might say nothing, would you get on with a sermon?

  151. I am in the sermon. I'm in the sermon, literally,

  152. I'm living in the sermon. You see God didn't give us these

  153. stories, Just for information. He didn't give us these stories

  154. just for inspiration be like Moses lead like Moses.

  155. Here's the rules that Moses used.

  156. They're there and they're helpful but it's more than that.

  157. It's the transformation of the presence of God in our lives.

  158. That changes us Not just information about the one who

  159. can transform us the real presence and that's why this

  160. matters and it fits to any level of Brokenness.

  161. You've brought into this place today or will next week.

  162. It meets you in your doubt and your despair in your

  163. discouragement. It meets you in the broken

  164. relationships that you have with the fears that you have.

  165. It meet you there. Because God is there the same

  166. God, that was on Mount Sinai is the same God who's living

  167. inside? All who profess faith in Jesus?

  168. That's amazing. So, it matters.

  169. But why? It's centered on the idea and

  170. the reality. Of Covenant.

  171. Go back with me. 2 verse 2. They set out from rephidim and

  172. came into the Wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the

  173. wilderness. Now, just to give you some

  174. typography, this is a desert, this is not Lush Evergreens with

  175. streams rolling, where you're going to enjoy trout.

  176. Fishing. This is a desert.

  177. It's rough. They're at the foot of this

  178. mountain and camped and they're going to be there for a long

  179. while. They're Israel and camped before

  180. the mountains. Now, verse 3.

  181. I wonder how fast you fast. You just read through.

  182. This says, the Israelites were in Camp before the mountain

  183. while Moses went up to God, while Moses went up to God,

  184. okay? I want everybody to think about

  185. this for a minute. God is revealing himself on this

  186. mountain. And he is not some kind gently.

  187. Gentle Mountaineer. That's ground his own coffee,

  188. beans, and is waiting for you to come and sit down and enjoy the

  189. nature. He's created The people are

  190. seeing smoke and they're seeing fire and they're hearing Thunder

  191. and they're hearing trumpets. Verse 16.

  192. You don't have this in the bolt and if you open your Bible, it's

  193. there. Just listen though, on the

  194. morning of the third day, there were Thunders and lightning

  195. lightning is plural and a thick Cloud on the mountain and a very

  196. loud trumpet blast. So that all the people in the

  197. camp trembled. They were trembling.

  198. And by the way, this is not Subjective everybody saw it.

  199. Everybody heard it. Everybody trembled people were

  200. saying that's not that impressive.

  201. It's God. And if this is how God is going

  202. to reveal himself to the people of Israel, then after he's LED

  203. them out. What's it going to be like when

  204. he does return, it's not going to be subjective.

  205. Nobody is going to say, it might be Jesus.

  206. It's going to be objective and it's going to be terrifying and

  207. it's going to be all inspiring in the word of.

  208. God tells us every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus

  209. Christ is Lord, God is awesome. He is awesome.

  210. But Moses is going up to meet with him.

  211. What should a picture that if you were one of the million plus

  212. people who were there? Depending on how close you were

  213. to the mountain and you couldn't get too close or you be Zapped.

  214. It's an awesome. God, Moses is walking some wood.

  215. Been able to watch as he goes up.

  216. If you ever seen a man, how tiny they become, as they move up,

  217. he's going up the mountain. He's ascending to be with God.

  218. Why? Because God is going to reveal

  219. to him. His covenants.

  220. Look with me again, at verse 3, while Moses went up to God

  221. period. The Lord God Called to him out

  222. of the mountain saying, 'The us you shall say to the house of

  223. Jacob and tell the people of Israel you yourselves have seen

  224. what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore You On Eagle's Wings

  225. and brought you to myself. Verse 5 now, therefore if you

  226. will indeed obey my voice and keep my Covenant, this is the

  227. first time this is used in the Bible that phrase and keep my

  228. Covenant. It's not the first Covenant but

  229. it's the first time. It's been spoken this way.

  230. You shall be my treasured possession.

  231. Among all peoples for all the Earth is mine and you shall be

  232. to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  233. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of

  234. Israel. Moses is a prophet, what our

  235. Prophet supposed to do, what our pastors supposed to do, preacher

  236. supposed to do, teach, and preach, and proclaim the word of

  237. God. That's what Moses does. 47?

  238. So Moses came down and he called the Elders of the people.

  239. This is significant, it is a Leadership Model.

  240. He calls the owners to himself and says this is what the Lord

  241. said, now, spread that word and they did, they set before them.

  242. All these words before them. Means all the people of Israel.

  243. There's over a million of them set before them.

  244. All these words that the Lord had commanded, all the people

  245. answered together and said all that.

  246. The Lord has spoken. We will do.

  247. So, Moses goes back up. The mountain reports, these

  248. words of the people to the Lord This is Moses life.

  249. We're studying the life of Moses.

  250. He is moving up this mountain where God has made his presence

  251. real. Here's what the word wants him

  252. to say in faithfulness, he brings it to the people and the

  253. people of said, we will do it. We will do all of it and don't

  254. you believe that they meant it? You know how the story is going

  255. to go but they meant it we will do it.

  256. And what is before us is a covenant and the Covenant, in

  257. this time period, in this particular part of the earth,

  258. the way these covenants were built was a covenant that had

  259. these things first. It had a preamble in the

  260. Preamble would list simply who are the people involved in the

  261. Covenant? In this case it is God himself

  262. and it is the people of Israel. Covenants were a contract but

  263. they're not like the contracts we have today.

  264. They're quite different for one, the contract wasn't to equal

  265. parties. There was one who was the

  266. Conquering King The Sovereign, the all-powerful who then was

  267. making a covenant with one who has been conquered.

  268. That's the way it worked. The Preamble is God, and the

  269. people of Israel, the Preamble then moves into and historical

  270. prologue. Where the Sovereign says, this

  271. is what I have done and this is why you should trust me and you

  272. see it right here. Go back with me to verse 4.

  273. This is God. Speaking to Moses, you

  274. yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore

  275. you. Are You On Eagle's Wings and

  276. brought you to myself? That would have been an

  277. illustration that they could have understood Bore You On

  278. Eagle's Wings. You know, when we go to Lake

  279. City, Colorado almost every year at this wonderful, beautiful

  280. lake Lake San Cristobal. At the top of this massive pine

  281. tree, there's an eagle's nest now.

  282. Eagles win their babies, they had to stay in the nest usually

  283. for over 100 days. They're so fragile.

  284. And when it comes time for them, To get out the mother, messes

  285. up, the nest, and they've got a fly.

  286. But if they struggle, what does the mother do?

  287. She swoops underneath them and carries the baby to safety until

  288. it's ready? What a picture God did that for

  289. the people of Israel. He is doing it for us.

  290. The prologue continues, he speaks of the history of what he

  291. has done. I bore You On Eagle's Wings and

  292. brought you to myself. Elf.

  293. The prologue is meant to show the one who is in Covenant

  294. relationship. This is why I'm worthy of your

  295. trust and worthy of your honor. Next after the Preamble Who's

  296. involved in the Covenant after the prologue.

  297. This is why you should trust me and remain in this Covenant

  298. comes. What is required?

  299. And what God is. Requiring here, is their full

  300. obedience to his revealed word. And he's about to Out to give

  301. them the Ten Commandments. I want you to miss not miss

  302. something. How gracious is it of God that

  303. he rescues them first from the oppression of the enemy and

  304. brings them out from the oppression of the enemy.

  305. Before he gives them the law, he rescues them.

  306. What if he had said, while they were in Egypt, here's my Ten

  307. Commandments. If you obey them perfectly

  308. forever, then I'll rescue you We wouldn't have this book.

  309. God's grace is the rescue comes first.

  310. Then there is the enabling by his spirit in the hearts of new

  311. creatures that we, by his power and presence can seek to obey

  312. his word. And to be forgiven constantly,

  313. when we fall short, the Preamble, it lists, the parties,

  314. the prologue. This is what God has done.

  315. Here's what is required of you. Lastly, the blessings and the

  316. curses that come in, did you hear them as I read them?

  317. What the Lord says to Moses. He says, tell them verse 5, if

  318. you will indeed obey my voice and keep my Covenant, you shall

  319. be my treasured possession to being the treasured possession

  320. of the God, who is on that mountain.

  321. Amazing, among all the peoples for the Earth is mine and you

  322. shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  323. We're going to pick that up next week.

  324. These are the words that you shall speak to the people.

  325. Their identity is transformed. If they obey these things, they

  326. will be God. Almighty's treasured possession.

  327. Athena Treasures. Most they will be a kingdom of

  328. priests. They will be a holy nation, a

  329. holy people. The parties involved were God.

  330. Moses is playing the role of profit.

  331. And the role of mediator. Listen to this.

  332. Just after the Lord gives the Ten Commandments, the people of

  333. Israel speak. They speak to Moses.

  334. Listen to what they say. You speak to us and we will

  335. listen but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.

  336. Moses said to the people do not fear for God has come to test

  337. you that the fear of him who may be before you that you may not

  338. sin. The people stood far off while

  339. Moses Drew near to the thick. Darkness, where God was.

  340. Moses was the mediator. And we know what happens.

  341. Next week, we'll be looking at the chapter, where the people of

  342. God because Moses hasn't returned soon enough.

  343. Make idols and worship idols, they will not keep the Covenant.

  344. And what happens? God.

  345. Who in verse 3, it says drew them to himself.

  346. The God Who said, I want you to be mine forever.

  347. Is going to provide a better profit, a perfect Prophet.

  348. The word himself in the beginning was the word and the

  349. Word was with God. And the Word was God.

  350. The God on the mountain of Mount Sinai.

  351. Father, Son. And Holy Spirit is the same God

  352. born in the manger. A better profit, the perfect

  353. Prophet. A better mediator, the perfect

  354. mediator. It will be Jesus.

  355. In the Old Testament is God was on that mountain, his presence

  356. and Power in his word being revealed.

  357. Now becomes a man. First, the baby 100% man. 100%

  358. God who's going to enter into this world to this Darkness.

  359. Why? Because the Lord desires to draw

  360. his people to himself. How does this connect to the

  361. long list of fears and pains and burdens that we experience the

  362. Side of Heaven? This way.

  363. These same God. In that storm, in that fire in

  364. that thunder. In that trumpet, the one who

  365. spoke to Moses and Moses spoke back to on behalf of the people

  366. that same God came to this earth.

  367. Jesus. To live the life that we could

  368. never live because we could never none of us perfectly obey

  369. that law. The reason why I could pause

  370. right now and say let's go back to the Ten Commandments and

  371. let's do it again. It would be appropriate because

  372. we know we're going to fall short and so did God and so God

  373. gives us the man who lives perfectly who never sins.

  374. He's the second Adam, the new Adam. but that God, That just

  375. God, the perfect righteousness, and holiness.

  376. Ordained that there would have to be a sacrifice just as the

  377. people were saved and Israel by the Passover Lamb.

  378. Now, we are saved by the lamb. The Lamb of God.

  379. In Jesus Christ doesn't descend upon a mountain, but he is sins

  380. onto a cross. and as he is lifted up, He does everything.

  381. That is necessary. all the way to the end so that God Father,

  382. Son and Holy Spirit can fulfill his Covenant promises to make a

  383. people for himself and to draw them near After Jesus spoke his

  384. final words. And breathe his last.

  385. The Centurion said, truly. This is the son of God.

  386. What we can take from Exodus 19. Is that the very same God who

  387. descended on that mountain and fire and smoke and thunder and

  388. trumpet and word that very same God.

  389. Is very present today in the lives of all, who trust in him.

  390. The spirit of God, God himself is living in US.

  391. His word is still being revealed to us and what his word is

  392. seeking to say to us all the way through is that he is faithful

  393. to keep his Covenant. He is Lord, he is Lord, he has

  394. and will fulfill every promise he's made. and for those who are

  395. in Christ, we recognize the fear and wonder and Transcendence of

  396. God, but we live in the freedom being in the grip of the one who

  397. has drawn us to himself. So, in every conversation I had

  398. last week and the ones I'll have today and the rest of this week.

  399. I will have the privilege and you do too as the priesthood of

  400. all believers to tell the story of the God, one, true God,

  401. father son. Holy Spirit, who is doing all of

  402. this and has done all this. To draw his people to himself.

  403. That you might know. If you're in Christ, you're his

  404. treasured possession. We're going to close after I

  405. pray. And I want you to really think

  406. deeply about the words that were singing because they're about

  407. that God. And they're about that.

  408. God, who is living in us right now.
