  1. Exodus chapter 23 is our scripture reading.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  2. And once. Again, we have a rather long,

  3. lengthy reading and we're going to do everything differently

  4. like we always. Do I'm going to read about half

  5. of this, and that's going to be our scripture reading for the

  6. morning. Which will also give us the

  7. story. Background for the sermon the

  8. sermons found. In the second.

  9. Half of our reading, and I I will not.

  10. Read that aloud instead. I will walk through it a little

  11. bit as we take a look. At the message there in the time

  12. we have but here now the word of the.

  13. Lord. This is Moses.

  14. The Golden Calf episode is just. Ending.

  15. And the Lord is dealing with his people and he.

  16. And Moses are. Engaged in this entire chapter

  17. long conversation. Including the.

  18. Background that I now read, the Lord said to Moses.

  19. Depart up from. Here.

  20. You and the people whom you've brought.

  21. Up out of the land of Egypt. To the land to.

  22. Which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacobs, saying to your

  23. offspring, I will give it. I will.

  24. Send an Angel before you. And I will drive out the

  25. Canaanites, the Amorites, the. Hiptites, the parasites, the

  26. Hipites and the Jebusites. Go up to A.

  27. Land flowing with. Milk and honey, but I will not

  28. go up among you, lest I consume. You on the way.

  29. For you. Are a stiff necked people, by

  30. the way that was the Lord talking.

  31. When the people. Heard the disastrous words they.

  32. Mourned and no one put on his ornaments.

  33. For the Lord had said to Moses, Say to the people you.

  34. Are a stiff necked people if. For a single.

  35. Moment. I should go up among you.

  36. I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments

  37. that you may know what to do with that I may know what to do

  38. with you. Therefore the people of Israel

  39. stripped. Themselves of their ornaments

  40. from Mount Horeb onward. Now Moses used to take the tent

  41. and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he

  42. called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord

  43. would go up to the tent of meeting which was outside the

  44. camp. Whenever Moses went up to the

  45. tent, all the people would rise up, and each one would stand at

  46. his tent door and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent

  47. when. Moses entered the tent, the

  48. pillar of cloud. Would descend and stand at the

  49. entrance of the tent and the Lord.

  50. Would. Speak to Moses.

  51. When all the people saw the pillar.

  52. Of Cloud standing at the entrance of the tent.

  53. All the people would rise up and worship each.

  54. At his tent. Door.

  55. Thus the Lord used to speak. To Moses.

  56. Face to face. As a man speaks to a friend when

  57. Moses turned again into the camp.

  58. His assistant. Joshua the son of none.

  59. A young man would not. Depart.

  60. From the tent. The Word of the Lord.

  61. You must be seated right now. Did you catch what you just

  62. read? The Golden Calf incident?

  63. I say incident. One of those horrible sins.

  64. In the history of humanity. Second probably only to the

  65. Garden of Eden. And the snake.

  66. God's people have while Moses was on the.

  67. Mountain communicating with God and getting.

  68. All the instructions. He needed.

  69. Concerning how they. Were to live in every.

  70. Facet in detail of their life as well as how they were to.

  71. Worship in every facet in detail.

  72. Of a Tabernacle in a sacrificial system that he would build for

  73. them, where that God might dwell in their midst In a Tabernacle

  74. while Moses. Is getting all of that.

  75. God's people down. Below, get impatient.

  76. And they start a worship service.

  77. There's a good worship service. It was loud.

  78. It was joyous. It was very, very.

  79. Dynamic and exciting. But it was false worship.

  80. It was worship of the veil. It was the worship of the

  81. fertility cult, the Golden Young Bull.

  82. And it was. Horrible.

  83. And God. Came down and dealt.

  84. With his. People and one of the.

  85. Things that that had happened in that particular episode was God

  86. was up there telling Moses how much gold was going to be in the

  87. Tabernacle and on the. Mercy seat and was.

  88. Going to overlay the pieces of furniture.

  89. Gold, gold, gold. And the people were down below

  90. at the same time. Squandering their gold and

  91. building a golden. Calf.

  92. And you remember what happened if you read this.

  93. We didn't read it last week, but I know you know the story is

  94. Moses. Ended up melting down.

  95. Crushing and melting. Down into a.

  96. Powder. And then into a liquid.

  97. That that golden calf. And made the people drink it.

  98. And a great plague came upon them, and there was all sorts.

  99. Of things. And God, at this point, is not

  100. really sure what he's. Going to do.

  101. With Israel? Now, of course, I speak

  102. anthropomorphically. God.

  103. Always knows what he's going to do, but in dealing with them,

  104. he's working at their pace, he's working at their level.

  105. And that's what God. Does he accommodates?

  106. Himself to his. People.

  107. But what an awful. Accommodation has to be made,

  108. and so finally. In the tent.

  109. Of meeting that had been set up in the tent of meeting.

  110. Was not the sanctuary. It was not the.

  111. Tabernacle. It had not been erected yet.

  112. What they had there was a place where Moses would go outside

  113. the. Camp not.

  114. With God dwelling in the. Midst of them not God with us.

  115. Not Emmanuel that you have in the temple, but I'm, I'm in the.

  116. In the. Tabernacle then later in the

  117. temple. But you had this ten of meeting

  118. and it was a place out there. Basically it was kept by Joshua.

  119. The young. General.

  120. In Moses army. And who had been one of the

  121. spies? Who?

  122. Ends up being the leader of Israel, but he's in his.

  123. Younger days and he keeps that 10 of.

  124. Meeting, and it's a place where God would come.

  125. In the Shakinah glory. The pillar of cloud.

  126. And would meet with Moses. And would speak to him like God

  127. had. Spoken to no one else, not just

  128. in a dream and in a vision. But God's presence would.

  129. Be there, and Moses would be there.

  130. And they. Would talk.

  131. They had started this particular habit back at.

  132. The burning Bush. That's where God.

  133. Encountered. With Moses.

  134. And that's had been their relationship all along through

  135. Egypt. Through the Red Sea and now

  136. through. The Wilderness and through the.

  137. Giving of the mana and through everything.

  138. That had happened to them up to this point.

  139. We're probably. About a year out.

  140. From the Red Sea at this point in terms of time, but the people

  141. have made it over to Mount Sinai.

  142. And listen to the language. Of that right there, I'll just

  143. make a couple of, the Lord said to Moses.

  144. Depart. Go up from here, you and the

  145. people whom? You have brought up out of the

  146. land. Of Egypt do.

  147. You hear that? The Lord.

  148. Says to Moses. You brought them.

  149. Up, out of the land of Egypt, they're your.

  150. People. You go with them, you take care

  151. of them. You're their leader.

  152. Oh, what a what a background and what a relationship.

  153. Moses is already. Having with the living.

  154. And the true. God, it's amazing.

  155. He's the great mediator. Of the old.

  156. Covenant And they and it was. Very, very significant.

  157. We delighted the new covenant we'll talk.

  158. About that in. Just a moment, but the old

  159. covenant was wonderful within itself because God was squarely.

  160. Standing up and talking to a representative man, that is

  161. Moses. And so this is what God says.

  162. I promise to give him the land and I'm going to give him the

  163. land. I'll go before you.

  164. I'll have a presence. I'll have an Angel.

  165. I'll have an embassary. I'll have a warrior.

  166. Somebody. You'll possess the land.

  167. I'll fulfill my promises. God says.

  168. That it's going to be. You and you're going to go.

  169. And that's when Moses realized. That he could not go and would

  170. not go. If God.

  171. Would not. Go with him.

  172. And that's what the rest of the chapters all about is.

  173. This conversation between Moses and the Lord and let me.

  174. Just sort of. Summarize.

  175. It for you. Because it's it.

  176. It's very, very involved, but I think you can see sort of a.

  177. An outline to it. I've sort of titled this to

  178. myself. Getting to know.

  179. Your God getting to know your. God in Knowledge.

  180. Who God is his ways? Getting to know.

  181. The presence of God, his person, His presence.

  182. And then? Coming to see something?

  183. Not everything, but something. Of the glory of your God,

  184. getting to know your God as. To who he is and that's what we

  185. we have here. In the first part of this this

  186. section with Moses. Beginning.

  187. In verse 12. And then you keep your head down

  188. and read the text because it encourages me to.

  189. Keep me at my head down to read the text.

  190. We don't have to worry about eye contact.

  191. They taught us about that in seminary, but it's not important

  192. today. Moses said to the Lord.

  193. See, you say to me. Bring up this people you told.

  194. Me to bring up this people, but you have not let me know.

  195. Whom you will send with me. Who's going?

  196. Moses said I can't. Do it.

  197. I need someone to be. With me?

  198. Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you have also found

  199. favor in my sight. Moses recognizes.

  200. That God had definitely called him.

  201. God was working with him. In fact, God had.

  202. Had called him from, literally. From the bulrushes.

  203. And he had been through the. Burning Bush and through.

  204. The Red Sea and all the rest. He says now.

  205. Therefore, if I have found favor.

  206. In your sight. This is Moses.

  207. Still speaking please. Show me now your ways that I may

  208. know you in order to find favor in.

  209. Your sight. There's a sermon right there.

  210. That's as far as we really need to go.

  211. Here was the heart plea of Moses to his God.

  212. Teach me your ways. I.

  213. Want to know your ways? I want to know what you think,

  214. how you act, what you expect. How can I find?

  215. Favor with you. How can I please you?

  216. Moses was in covenant with his God, there was no doubt about

  217. that. And he's had that longing of his

  218. heart. To know God that I might know

  219. him. In a true and intimate way.

  220. But then he also moves on to. Worry about the presence.

  221. Of God, not just the knowledge of God in order.

  222. To consider to. That this nation is your nation.

  223. And he said my presence. Will go with.

  224. You and I will. Give you.

  225. Rest that's exactly. What?

  226. God promised his people. That's what Canaan was to be.

  227. Canaan was. To be a place of rest, by the

  228. way. Can you hear?

  229. The voice of Jesus coming to me. And I will.

  230. Give you rest. This is Moses now and God in

  231. this ancient about 1400. Years before Christ.

  232. And he said to him, if. Your Presence.

  233. This is Moses. Speaking again, if your presence

  234. will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.

  235. For how shall it be known that I have favor in your sight, I and

  236. your people? Is it not in your?

  237. Going with us so that we are distinct.

  238. And I and your people from every other people.

  239. On the face of the earth. Moses is reminding.

  240. God of all those things God had separated from all the nations.

  241. This One Nation that he was going to make.

  242. Holy. Think about that.

  243. That was God's. Design.

  244. That's what God wanted to do, was to have a people, peculiar

  245. people, unto himself. A redeemed people.

  246. A sacred people. And just what had they just?

  247. Got through doing. Don't you hear the admonition of

  248. the apostle coming to us and talking about how we are of the

  249. world and we have? Drenched ourselves in the world

  250. and we are supposed to be separated to God for a special.

  251. People and our number one thing is that we have the manual we

  252. have. God with us, and that's.

  253. How the? Pagans of the world will know

  254. who we are, because we dwell together in this holiness, in

  255. this separated. And clean.

  256. Life that God has given us, with a behavior and a worldview that

  257. is distinct from theirs. So Moses knows that they won't.

  258. Get very far and they won't. Be very impressive and they

  259. won't have a. Light to shine if they don't

  260. have. God's very presence.

  261. With him when they go up, so Moses is is is making.

  262. Strong intercession. There's strong theodyssey.

  263. Here is Moses deals with. All of the things that.

  264. God had promised. That God had.

  265. Called him to. And yet, at the same time, it

  266. was looking kind of. Dark and bleak at this.

  267. Point in fact the. People.

  268. The people. Were out there in mourning, you

  269. saw in the text they had. Taken off all their party

  270. clothes and their ornaments and all of their their things that

  271. were shallowing of this world. And they were.

  272. In sackcloth and ashes before God.

  273. And they. Realized just how.

  274. Unworthy and how? Undone they.

  275. Were and. God hadn't offered him a whole

  276. lot of grace at this point, either.

  277. He just. All he talked about as we closed

  278. out last week was. All he talked about was.

  279. Judging their sin. Absolutely and positively

  280. judging sin. And that's where you stand with

  281. God this morning apart. From Jesus Christ.

  282. There's some issues. Between you and God, God's hand

  283. is not shortened that he cannot save neither.

  284. Is his ear. Heavy that he cannot hear.

  285. But your sins have separated. Between you.

  286. And your God. And your.

  287. Sin, your iniquity has hid his face from you.

  288. And he will not hear. So says the prophet Isaiah.

  289. And that's the condition of many of us, I hope.

  290. If that's the condition of your heart.

  291. This morning that you begin in penitential prayer, coming to

  292. the Lord, knowing the things that are about to be outlined

  293. here further in this particular conversation.

  294. Picking it up in verse 17 and the.

  295. Lord said to Moses, this is. Back and forth this.

  296. Is the conversation. This very thing.

  297. That you have spoken, I will. Do.

  298. For if you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by

  299. name, isn't that marvelous that when?

  300. Moses just bears his heart before the Lord.

  301. And cries out and say I. Won't I won't.

  302. Go if I don't have you. He's like Father Jacob that

  303. wrestled with God's Angel and said I won't go.

  304. I won't let you go until you bless me.

  305. Prayer. Wrestling with God, talking to

  306. God, Clinging to God, Not letting God go until he blesses

  307. us, not because of anything we deserve, but because.

  308. We've heard the gospel. We've heard the news.

  309. We've heard that he's gracious and slow to anger and

  310. long-suffering and merciful. And you can't.

  311. Let a God like that go. If he doesn't save you, you're

  312. not saved. So Moses.

  313. Said Please show. Me.

  314. Your glory. He wanted to know God.

  315. He wanted the. Presence of God.

  316. With him and he wanted. More do you ever your spiritual

  317. life, want more? You ever feel like gnawing

  318. hunger in your soul to know more about?

  319. Well, you've got the Bible. You read it.

  320. There's all sorts of things you wonderful God has graciously

  321. revealed himself in so many ways, in the sky as well as in

  322. the Christ. But.

  323. But you say there's more, there's a need for more.

  324. And he wanted to see the glory of.

  325. God, that is, he wanted to see God's weightiness.

  326. God's worth, God's value? God's.

  327. Splendor God's majesty. God's dignity.

  328. That's what the glory of God is. Moses knew God well enough at a

  329. certain level, but he couldn't get enough his.

  330. Heart pan it like the deer. Panning.

  331. For the river of water, the water of life.

  332. And so this. Episode did as we close out,

  333. tells us something about how. God accommodated that.

  334. God says, I know you, and I'll make your myself known to you.

  335. That'll help you in your knowledge.

  336. God says, OK, I'll go with you, I'll be with you.

  337. And that's always the promise of God, even in the when Jesus left

  338. and ascended, he told his disciples.

  339. And I'm with you till the end of the age.

  340. And now this request that Moses please one.

  341. Time Show me. Thy glory, and this is how the

  342. Lord accommodated him, he said. I will make all my.

  343. Goodness, pass before. You and will proclaim before

  344. you. My name.

  345. It's an interesting, Lord said. Well, I'll show you how bright

  346. I. Am how big I am, how I've

  347. mentioned. He said.

  348. I'll try to give some kind of. Vehicle that.

  349. Will demonstrate to your small finite mind some of my greatness

  350. and my gory. But, he said.

  351. Let me just give you a brief. Sketch of my goodness.

  352. Of all the attributes of God that could have been made known

  353. to Moses, it was his goodness that God.

  354. Wanted to be known. Foremost, and I will proclaim

  355. before you my name. The True God, Yahweh, Jehovah

  356. God, the Living God, the Lord. God the Lord.

  357. Is his name. And then I will be gracious to

  358. whom I will be gracious. I will show mercy on whom I.

  359. Will show mercy. This is the germinal.

  360. Assets of the sovereignty of God.

  361. Paul quotes that in. Romans 9 to that very point

  362. that. God will have.

  363. Mercy upon whom he will have mercy.

  364. And he will have the gracious to.

  365. Whom he will be. Gracious, in fact, later on he

  366. will say, I raised up Pharaoh for that very.

  367. Point is, order that I might. Show I will.

  368. Have mercy upon whom I will have mercy.

  369. And that's what he says. And he says.

  370. You cannot see my face, for no man shall see me and live.

  371. No man can see God. God is most.

  372. Pure spirit. We just sang it.

  373. Immortal, invisible. So what?

  374. Can I see? What?

  375. Can we do in verse 21 then mote? The Lord said.

  376. Behold. There is a.

  377. Place by me. Where you shall.

  378. Stand. On the rock.

  379. Well, if I was a preacher, I'd stop right there and I'd preach

  380. about there's a place God says by me.

  381. In the bosom of the Father, where you can stand on a solid

  382. rock, is that not a? Sermon.

  383. Well, we. Got to pass it up and and finish

  384. out here there. Is a place.

  385. By me. Where you shall.

  386. Stand on the rock. And I.

  387. Suppose he's. Talking about one of the cragly.

  388. Rocks there at the Mount Sinai. And while my.

  389. Glory passes by. I will put you in the cleft of

  390. the rock right now. God's protecting Moses because

  391. he knows if Moses ever gets a good eye full of Jesus, I mean

  392. of of the God Almighty. He.

  393. Will not live. So this is the way the Lord says

  394. I'm going to let you see something, but.

  395. You're not going. To see enough to kill you.

  396. And here's what he says. I'll put you in the.

  397. Cleft of the Rock, I'll put you in a.

  398. Crevice in that rock and I'll cover you with my hand.

  399. Until I have. Passed by, it said.

  400. Then I will. Take away my hand once I've

  401. passed by, God says I take away my hand.

  402. And you shall see. My back, but my face shall not

  403. be seen. God's face is not seen.

  404. Then it's not. Seen now except in one.

  405. Jesus Christ, Interesting, he said.

  406. I will proclaim my name. He said my goodness will pass by

  407. and I will proclaim my name. That's God.

  408. As he does so many times in the Old Testament.

  409. Preaching the gospel, That's God.

  410. Doing what the apostles did, and that is.

  411. Proclaiming the name of God. In the person of his very son,

  412. Jesus Christ, Moses, as we mentioned.

  413. So often. Ended up.

  414. Finally seeing Christ. On the mount of Transfiguration

  415. there. During the earthly ministry of

  416. Christ. And that's where we see God is

  417. in Christ. Moses is a faithful servant in

  418. God's house, but Jesus Christ is a son, not a steward in the

  419. house, but the Son of the house. And that's the.

  420. Theme of the book of Hebrews that implores us.

  421. To look to Jesus, the author. And finisher?

  422. Of our faith.
