  1. Pray with me, Father, thank you so much for what you have given

  2. us this day. These hymns, the voices, Your

  3. Word, Your Presence, Your illumination, everything we

  4. need, everything. As we open Your Word, as we

  5. listen, as you illuminate Holy Spirit, our hearts and our minds

  6. transform us for your glory and our good and the good of those

  7. around us. Anchor us deep in the truth of

  8. who you are and who we are in You because of the life and

  9. death, resurrection, ascension, reign and promised return of our

  10. Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and whose name we pray.

  11. Amen. The bulletin went to print this

  12. week on Wednesday. It's pretty remarkable to see

  13. what the Lord has given us, knowing what we would know.

  14. Amazing Grace, Jesus is Lord, and we went today with a mighty

  15. fortress praying about what to preach.

  16. I believe the Lord led me to Psalm 16 and not to this portion

  17. of John printed in your bulletin.

  18. I'll tell you why in a moment. And we will come back to John

  19. 15. Not next week, though, because

  20. we have a guest preacher. Brent Baker, who used to serve

  21. here as one of our pastors, will be preaching, and he'll be

  22. preaching out of John 16. I'll be returning from family

  23. camp after a few weeks and we will go back to this section of

  24. John because it's so important. But what I want you to

  25. understand is that as we look at this Psalm, we do so as people

  26. united to Christ. Christ is in US.

  27. What David is praying, he only sees into the future, but what

  28. we are going to see as we listen to his prayer is that the very

  29. God that he's petitioning is the one who through his Spirit lives

  30. in US. And that is not a wishful

  31. thought. That is not something to just

  32. talk about. It's an experience, a reality to

  33. be lived. We're going to look at Psalm 16,

  34. these 11 verses that David prayed.

  35. It's in your Bible. If you did not bring your Bible,

  36. please grab a Pew Bible to save you time.

  37. You can turn to page 453. That's where it is.

  38. I'm going to read this Psalm in its entirety.

  39. It's only 11 verses, and I trust that the Lord will use it to

  40. encourage us deeply in this moment as you're moving there.

  41. I think it's so powerful in moments like this to go back to

  42. that which is familiar, that which is true.

  43. And in a moment, I'm going to give you a proposition that I

  44. heard from John Piper as he preached this text.

  45. I've shared it here before, and I think you'll be deeply

  46. encouraged by it. But let's go to the text

  47. beginning at verse one of Psalm 16, a Psalm of David.

  48. Preserve me, oh God, for in you I take refuge.

  49. I say to the Lord, You are my Lord.

  50. I have no good apart from You. As for the Saints in the land,

  51. they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

  52. The sorrows of those who run after another God shall multiply

  53. their drink. Offerings of blood.

  54. I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

  55. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup.

  56. You hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in

  57. pleasant places. Indeed, I have a beautiful

  58. inheritance. Verse 7.

  59. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel in the night.

  60. Also my heart instructs me. I've set the Lord always before

  61. me, because He is at my right hand.

  62. I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and

  63. my whole being rejoices. My flesh also dwells secure, for

  64. you will not abandon my soul to shield, or let your Holy One see

  65. corruption. You make known to me the path of

  66. life. In your presence there is

  67. fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures

  68. forevermore. This is the word of the Lord.

  69. Thanks be to God. Please be seated.

  70. The statement I am about to read to you, I read in preparation

  71. for preaching this Psalm many years ago.

  72. I then learned that Doctor John Piper, author of many books

  73. including Desiring God, had preached this Psalm at Watermark

  74. on a Tuesday night at the Porch. He spends about an hour in this

  75. text. It's worth listening to, but he

  76. begins with this statement, this sentence, which really is a

  77. proposition that encompasses the whole Psalm.

  78. I've shared this with you before, and it goes like this.

  79. God will lead you body and soul through life and death.

  80. God will lead you body and soul, through life and death into

  81. everlasting full pleasure if He is your safest refuge, your

  82. supreme treasure, your sovereign Lord, and your most trusted

  83. counselor. One more time, God will bring

  84. you body and soul, through life and through death into

  85. everlasting full pleasure. That's heaven if He is your

  86. safest refuge, your supreme treasure, your sovereign Lord,

  87. and your most trusted counsellor.

  88. We're going to unpack that statement as we look at Psalm

  89. 16. The first thing I want you to

  90. notice is the very first word David says Preserve.

  91. What we learned from the psalmist here is that David is

  92. petitioning God for something he is crying out and we don't know

  93. why yet. Preserve me.

  94. It's a petition. The Psalms are an amazing gift

  95. from the Lord. First of all, because it's His

  96. holy Word, and therefore because it's His holy Word, it is a

  97. living word. It is active, and as the Spirit

  98. illuminates it, it brings hope and courage and truth and peace

  99. and true knowledge even when we are lost.

  100. It teaches us how to pray. You're going to see how to pray

  101. as you hear David's prayer, but it begins with a petition.

  102. Preserve me, save me, rescue me. That's his prayer.

  103. You have prayed prayers like that.

  104. Maybe most days of your life, but then there are seasons like

  105. the one we're in now where we almost don't even know what to

  106. pray. But we are praying, God,

  107. preserve, rescue, draw near, comfort.

  108. And these are good prayers. They're prayers that are echoed

  109. throughout Scripture. Why is David praying that?

  110. We'll see in a moment. But I want you to notice what he

  111. does. Preserve me, oh God, for in you

  112. I take refuge. David, praying to God, is

  113. preaching to himself, and as he preaches to himself, he is

  114. revealing who God has revealed himself to be.

  115. David is strong. David is courageous.

  116. We've seen it. But in this moment, preserve me.

  117. He's afraid of something. Preserve me for oh God, for in

  118. you I take refuge. God will lead you body and soul,

  119. through life and through death, into everlasting and full

  120. pleasure. If He is your safest refuge, is

  121. he today? Have you rested and received

  122. Jesus alone for salvation? Is Jesus your safest refuge when

  123. you experience times of profound devastation?

  124. When you are waiting for the results of something, fearful of

  125. what they might be? Understandably so.

  126. Where do you turn? Where do you bury yourself?

  127. Where do you hide? Where do you find your peace?

  128. Anything other than God himself, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is

  129. not ultimately secure. The only secure one is the Lord.

  130. David knows that and says, Preserve me, O God, for in you I

  131. take refuge. I don't take refuge in my

  132. armies, I don't take refuge in my physical strength.

  133. I don't take refuge in the wisdom you've given me.

  134. I take refuge and the one and only one who is ultimately

  135. secure, you are my safest refuge.

  136. Verse 2 David says, I say to the Lord, You are my Lord.

  137. I have no good apart from you. God will lead you body and soul,

  138. through life and through death into everlasting full pleasure.

  139. If he's your safest refuge and if he is your sovereign Lord,

  140. God is in control. The psalmist David says, I say

  141. to the Lord, notice how it's spelled.

  142. This is the name Yahweh. This is the name that speaks of

  143. his might, of his power, of his sovereignty.

  144. God is not off of his throne. David goes on in the Psalm in

  145. verse 5 and says, the Lord is my chosen portion in my cup.

  146. You hold my lot. What David is saying is I trust

  147. you no matter what happens. You're my safest refuge and

  148. because you're my safest refuge, I'm going to trust you.

  149. Preserve me. He then says in verse 6, the

  150. lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.

  151. Indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

  152. What does that mean? The lines that God has ordained,

  153. He never promised would be without pain this side of

  154. heaven. Things like this happen unless

  155. Christ returns first. You were going to die of

  156. physical death. Your children are going to die

  157. of physical death. Loved ones, friends, relatives.

  158. That's a reality. But in Christ, facing all sorts

  159. of devastation, we're able to say, as the psalmist did, the

  160. Lord is good and he does good. That is not a license to then

  161. say we can call evil good or darkness good or devastation

  162. good. These are real, tragic

  163. realities, but God's in control and in his sovereignty.

  164. He is the only one who can give us the right perspective.

  165. But that doesn't mean He's promised to answer every one of

  166. our questions. So often when we ask the

  167. question why, Brian Dunnigan, our dear friend who's past,

  168. who's now with the Lord, said he often gives us a who.

  169. When we ask why he gives us a who and The Who is him friends,

  170. when people ask questions when you ask questions and the Lord

  171. seems silent and what those answers might be.

  172. Don't make things up. Instead, anchor yourself and

  173. what the word of God says and another Psalm 119, verse 114,

    Psalms 119:114

  174. the psalmist writes, you are my hiding place, my refuge.

  175. You are my hiding place and my shield, my protector.

  176. And then the psalmist says, I hope in your word, as David

  177. writes in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, you are my

  178. Lord. I have no good apart from you.

  179. There we see the supreme treasure God will bring you if

  180. you're in Christ. God will bring you body and

  181. soul, in life and through death into everlasting pleasure, if he

  182. is your safest refuge, your sovereign Lord and your supreme

  183. treasure. Is Christ, your supreme

  184. treasure. Is there anything in your life,

  185. any cup in your life that you're sinking to drink from that is a

  186. greater treasure to you than Jesus?

  187. That temptation is very real. It can even be subtle.

  188. We can be deceived. We often are.

  189. But David says verse 2, I have no good apart from you.

  190. Think about what we've been learning about the union with

  191. Christ. Apart from me, you could do

  192. nothing. Friends, we are in Christ.

  193. Christ is in US. Is that reality your supreme

  194. treasure? Is there anything else competing

  195. in your life for that place? David says in verse 5.

  196. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup.

  197. What that means is if there is a table and there are many cups

  198. offering many things all over the table, David looks at the

  199. table and sees the Lord and says this is my cup and this alone.

  200. Nothing else that I could drink will satisfy.

  201. Nothing else will ultimately keep me safe eternally.

  202. Nothing else is worth being supreme.

  203. You are my chosen portion and my cup, safest refuge, sovereign

  204. Lord, supreme treasure. And then David says this in

  205. verse 7. I bless the Lord who gives me

  206. counsel in the night. Also my heart instructs me.

  207. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.

  208. The same Lord that David was blessing is the only Lord.

  209. The same counsel that God was giving David is the same counsel

  210. he gives us. All Scripture is God breathed

  211. and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and

  212. training in righteousness. The reason I believe the Lord

  213. led me to Psalm 16 for this Sunday is because He leads me to

  214. Psalm 16 every day. For every day I am tempted to

  215. put my refuge somewhere else. Every day I'm tempted to ignore

  216. the sovereignty of God. Every day I'm tempted to put

  217. something else supreme ahead of Christ and He corrects me.

  218. He corrects me because He loves me.

  219. His Spirit illuminates my heart and my life and says this is not

  220. in the proper place. Whenever I hear of news that

  221. overwhelms my soul, this is the place I run.

  222. And like David, I remind myself, anything I would seek to put my

  223. security in other than Christ is ultimately insecure.

  224. And we are tempted to put our security and insecure things all

  225. the time. So is David.

  226. So David says, I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.

  227. What is the counsel? It's God's perfect wisdom.

  228. No one else can give you perfect wisdom.

  229. Brothers and sisters, pastors, teachers, scholars, theologians,

  230. they can give great biblical counsel, and it can be true

  231. counsel. God's counsel is never without

  232. error. It is never confused.

  233. God is never seeking to learn something.

  234. And David says I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.

  235. Is God your most trusted counselor?

  236. Is there anything in your life, any place you're running, any

  237. person you're running to whose counsel you're seeking more than

  238. God's? Is it your own counsel you're

  239. seeking? Sometimes, because brokenness

  240. can be so deep, we began to believe wrong things about who

  241. God is, what he has said. Whose counsel are you listening

  242. to as you battle your own disbelief, broken heartedness?

  243. David says, I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.

  244. And then this phrase is amazing. And the night also, my heart

  245. instructs me. It takes me less than 30 seconds

  246. to look out here. And remember what some of you

  247. have told me about those nights when the unthinkable happened.

  248. And it's not just one night, but it can be a long season of

  249. nights where your heart is broken.

  250. Where do you run to in the middle of the night?

  251. Psalm 16 teaches us to turn to the Lord as our safest refuge.

  252. Psalm 16 teaches us about the sovereignty of God.

  253. It teaches us that He must be our supreme treasure and can be.

  254. He must be our most trusted counselor in the night.

  255. If you're in Christ, run to His Word, and if His word is in you,

  256. your very heart that He has given you, which is a new heart

  257. will instruct you, It will counsel you.

  258. And you know how it's going to counsel you.

  259. Just is it counsel, David, because it's in that counsel

  260. that the Lord reminded David that He alone is the safest

  261. refuge, that He alone is the sovereign God, that he alone is

  262. supreme. David then moves into verse 8

  263. and watch what happens. It now moves from a petition.

  264. It moves from preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge to

  265. verse 8. I have set the Lord always

  266. before me because he is at my right hand.

  267. I shall not be shaken. Do you see what's happened?

  268. David petitions the Lord, and then as the Lord brings counsel

  269. to his life about who he is, David exalts his character, and

  270. as he exalts his character as the safest refuge, the sovereign

  271. Lord, the supreme treasure, David's confidence swells.

  272. The man who is petitioning the Lord Preserve me now, says, I

  273. shall not be shaken. And what are the results?

  274. Therefore, verse 9, my heart is glad, and my whole being

  275. rejoices. My flesh also dwell secure, and

  276. here I believe is the reason his petition came in the first place

  277. for you, verse 10 will not abandon my soul to shield, or

  278. let your holy one see corruption.

  279. David was afraid of dying. He was afraid of his own body

  280. being desolated in the grave. The promise of Christ that's

  281. coming, which he was seeing would happen in the future, is

  282. the promise fulfilled. Reminds him that even in death

  283. the Lord is alive. The Lord is my safest refuge.

  284. The Lord is my supreme treasure. The Lord is my sovereign.

  285. He will not abandon me even in death.

  286. And so when we face death, when we face the death of our loved

  287. ones, when we face what seems to be untimely deaths, tragedies,

  288. God does not abandon his children because he died, truly

  289. died, because he was placed in the tomb, because he cried out,

  290. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  291. All who are in Christ can say now knowing more than David

  292. knew, he alone is my safest refuge.

  293. David then ends the Psalm by saying this.

  294. You make known to me the path of life while he's making known to

  295. you the path of life today. Fred, in the past, perhaps you

  296. have trusted Jesus and you know what that means.

  297. Praise God for His grace. Maybe today is the day where you

  298. realize the path you're on and it's not the one that leads to

  299. all that has been promised. Maybe He's brought you here this

  300. very morning to hear Psalm 16 so that you can rest and receive

  301. Jesus alone and enter into the narrow Rd. that leads to life.

  302. David says you make known to me the path of life.

  303. In your presence there is fullness of joy.

  304. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  305. That's the promise. That promise is not given to us

  306. to experience only pleasure. This sight of heaven, pain is

  307. going to be a reality of our life.

  308. Suffering is going to be very real.

  309. But as those who are in Christ encounter that pain, that part

  310. of God's bitter Providence, we do not mourn like the world.

  311. We do not run towards a multitude of other gods.

  312. If we do, our sorrows only multiply, but instead we run to

  313. the truth, to our counselor for those who are in Christ.

  314. The moment our eyes close, this site of heaven, the moment we

  315. die in Christ, our eyes are opened and that pleasure

  316. forevermore, that full and lasting pleasure is now our

  317. reality forever this side of heaven.

  318. That's the counsel God gives us. He's the safest refuge.

  319. He's the sovereign Lord. He is the supreme treasure.

  320. This is His perfect counsel. Is that true of you?

  321. Father, thank you so much for your word.

  322. Thank you for the word Jesus Christ.

  323. Thank you, Savior, for being our perfect refuge.

  324. Thank you for being the sovereign Lord and our supreme

  325. treasure. Thank you that even now the very

  326. one giving counsel to David is giving counsel to us.

  327. And Lord, lift our eyes up, if there are any today who don't

  328. know you who are in this place or watching online, would you

  329. bring them to surrender to you as the Lord God truly hear them

  330. Cry out, Preserve me. And may that prayer not be just

  331. for a moment, but a prayer that is meant for all eternity, for

  332. all who are in Christ are preserved now and forever.

  333. This we pray in Jesus name. Amen, please.
