  1. I want to draw your attention to our text this morning first

  2. before we read it, because the five verses in Colossians 115

  3. through 20 have two sections. There's the early strophy and

  4. then a second strophy, and verse 17 separates those two.

  5. So take a look at verse 17. Verse 17 begins by saying, and

  6. He is before all things, and that actually summarizes the two

  7. verses previous. Now look at the second-half of

  8. verse 17. And in Him all things hold

  9. together. And that actually introduces the

  10. remaining verses in Colossians 115 through 20.

  11. This is such a beautiful confession of the Christian

  12. faith of our hope in the Lord, of the reality of His Spirit in

  13. the world. Instead of me reading it to you,

  14. let's read it together. He is the image of the invisible

  15. God, the first born of all creation.

  16. For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth,

  17. visible and invisible, Whether Thrones or dominions or rulers

  18. or authorities. All things were created through

  19. Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and

  20. in Him all things hold together, and He is the head of the Body,

  21. the Church. He is the beginning, the first

  22. born from the dead, that in everything He might be

  23. preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of

  24. God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to

  25. Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace

  26. by the blood of His cross. For in Him the whole fullness of

  27. the Deity dwells bodily. And you have been filled in Him

  28. who is the head of all and authority.

  29. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks, Father in heaven, may

  30. the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be

  31. acceptable to you. O Christ our Rock, and our

  32. Redeemer, whose name we pray. Amen.

  33. Please be seated. I would say if we were honest

  34. with ourselves as a group of folks, we love firsts.

  35. We pay extra money to be first at Disney World.

  36. We love to be first in pretty much everything, in our

  37. achievements, in sports, in sales.

  38. We even have an anthology of firsts called the Guinness Book

  39. of World Records, and our passage stands glaringly before

  40. each one of us today and asks, is Christ first?

  41. Is Christ first in our thinking? Is he first in our speaking?

  42. Is He first in our acting? And sometimes we might readily

  43. say, well of course, and then there might come a time in life

  44. when we need to forgive another person and we don't necessarily

  45. put Christ first there to say, oh Lord, please help me.

  46. I would say that these 5 verses and the extra verses from

  47. Colossians chapter 2 are the most profoundly simple and

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  48. breathtakingly complex verses we could encounter.

  49. I I would say that if you were to gather the whole of scripture

  50. in just five verses, perhaps you would snip these out.

  51. And that's why some people call these verses the Holy of Holies

  52. of Colossians. So how can we talk about the

  53. Infinite in 20 minutes? Let's jump in, shall we?

  54. So take a look at verse 15. He is the image of the invisible

  55. God, the first born of all creation.

  56. The Holy Spirit opens up the curtain of the eternal counsel

  57. of God and lets us behold the glory of the second Person of

  58. the Godhead who stands at the center of all of God's covenant

  59. purposes. And here we are invited to look

  60. into the cosmos before Genesis 1, before light, before stars,

  61. before time itself. Here we are told of the second

  62. Person of the Godhead long before Genesis One.

  63. In theology we call this time in Christ's eternal life, His pre

  64. existence, and in these two clauses of verse 15 we see the 2

  65. dimensions of His pre existence, His relation to the Father and

  66. His relation to creation in relation to His Father.

  67. He is not only the image of the invisible God, but as the second

  68. person of the divine Trinity, He is the absolute image, the

  69. eternal second Person, the perfect radiance of the Father's

  70. glory. And before the first word of the

  71. Bible is ever spoken, the Triune God exists in perfect love, and

  72. the Son, the second person, reveals the fullness of that

  73. glory. Hebrews 1/3 says it best.

  74. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of

  75. His nature, upholding the universe by the word of His

  76. power. Now the second phrase in verse

  77. 15 shifts from Christ's eternal relation within the Trinity to

  78. the his relation with creation itself, and it says He's the

  79. first born of all creation, but his first born.

  80. That does not mean He had a beginning.

  81. The beginningless beginner is begotten.

  82. Begotten means born of, not created.

  83. It refers to what we call an eternal procession of love.

  84. The theological word for it is eternal generation.

  85. And so when we think of Christ's pre existence, before he became

  86. a man, we think of this eternal generation, this divine

  87. relationship from eternity past without beginning, always pure,

  88. completely unbroken and eternal. The second person of the Godhead

  89. as the first born doesn't refer to his beginning, but his

  90. status. First born means superior.

  91. First born means sovereign, not a beginning.

  92. He is the divine stamp of the invisible God, the sovereign one

  93. over all creation. Psalm 89 speaks of this.

  94. It says, I will make him the first born, the highest of the

  95. kings of the earth. There was never a time that

  96. Christ did not exist, and first born refers to His sovereignty,

  97. His superiority. He is the source of everything.

  98. There is no rule, there is no authority anywhere above Him,

  99. His superiority. He is the source, His rule and

  100. authority. This is what first born means.

  101. He is superior over all of creation.

  102. Let's continue with verse 16. For by Him all things were

  103. created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, where the

  104. Thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were

  105. created through Him and for Him. Now look at these prepositions

  106. in this verse. There's one at the very

  107. beginning in verse 16 for by Him, and then there are two at

  108. the end. Look at the two at the end,

  109. through and for. Combine these three very simple

  110. English words. Unfold the majesty of Christ in

  111. creation first by by Him by means agency.

  112. The second person of the Godhead before He becomes a human being

  113. is the agent of creation. Creation happened on behalf of

  114. the will of the Divine Trinity, because of the second person of

  115. the Godhead. He was the agent of creation

  116. through through him that preposition, you know, moving

  117. through, moving from one side to another, to change from one

  118. state to another. It's the sphere of creation, the

  119. sphere in which creation takes form.

  120. The second person of the Godhead is the sphere of creation.

  121. Through him, chaos becomes order, darkness becomes light,

  122. mud becomes man, and work moves into rest.

  123. And then that last preposition for him.

  124. And now this is really interesting because the tense

  125. changes here in this preposition, in this part, we go

  126. to a present tense. And when we have present tense,

  127. that means there's an ongoing action, something into the

  128. future. It shifts here, meaning that the

  129. future of creation is meant for Christ, for him.

  130. Romans 11 says For from him and through him and to him are all

  131. things. And it ends by saying to him be

  132. glory, forever, Amen, creation, moving into the future by,

  133. through, and for forever. Now look what's in between those

  134. prepositions. All things.

  135. That's pretty easy to understand, isn't it?

  136. All things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

  137. whether Thrones or dominions or rulers or authority.

  138. All things, everything, everything, everything belongs

  139. to that little boy in the animal feeding through that helpless

  140. human being born in a barn, the alpha and Omega of creation.

  141. Sometimes when I go through this passage, this is a great place

  142. to stop and say, could we just pray, sing a hymn and leave?

  143. Because what else is there to say other than thank you God,

  144. Amen. But let's go on to verse 17,

  145. shall we? And he sums up the point in

  146. verse 17. And he is before all things.

  147. Two decades after the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write

  148. these words here, the Holy Spirit would inspire the apostle

  149. John to write similar words that sound like this.

  150. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and

  151. the Word was God before any covenant was made in history,

  152. before Adam, before Noah, before Abraham, before Moses, before

  153. David, the eternal second person of the God had lived in perfect

  154. session with the Trinity. It's difficult for us, maybe not

  155. for you, but for me, it's difficult for me to get out of

  156. my head that Jesus was not a human being in eternity past,

  157. while he was in heaven with the Trinity, in that glorious

  158. celestial heavenly realm where angels were created, there was

  159. the second person of the Godhead.

  160. Adam was the first human being. And yes, Adam was created in the

  161. image of God. He was formed with a head and

  162. with a body, a design that would become powerful metaphors to

  163. help you and me understand our Lord's relationship with His

  164. church. Adam was called to rule, but he

  165. failed. And in infinite love, God made a

  166. covenant, a covenant of grace, whereby a human being would come

  167. and do what Adam could not. But there's more.

  168. Throughout the Old Testament, we see these glimpses of this

  169. mysterious figure who would eventually become the human

  170. Redeemer we so desperately needed.

  171. And this figure would have a variety of descriptions.

  172. He would be called the Angel of the Lord or the commander of the

  173. Lord's army. The 4th man in the furnace.

  174. A visitor with Abraham, One who stopped Isaac from being killed.

  175. One who physically wrestled with a man named Jacob.

  176. The voice from a burning Bush that was not being consumed.

  177. A radiant man standing before Daniel.

  178. These are just a few, these pre Incarnate glimpses of the second

  179. person of the Godhead in his pre existence.

  180. And these theophanies allowed humans to behold God without

  181. perishing. For no one can see God and live.

  182. And the third person of the Godhead had not been gifted to

  183. humanity and upon God's covenant people yet.

  184. Only the second person of the Trinity could reveal God in

  185. these moments. But we needed a man who could

  186. redeem us and then in the fullness of time it happened.

  187. The pre existent 1. The eternal Son became a human

  188. being, though he was in the very form of God.

  189. Christ made himself nothing, taking on the form of a servant

  190. and being born in the likeness of man.

  191. He is no longer called the Angel of the Lord.

  192. He is no longer called the commander of the Lord's army.

  193. But now he shall be given a name.

  194. Emmanuel shall now be his name. God with you and me, and we know

  195. him as Jesus, for He will save his people from their sins.

  196. This brings us to the second-half of verse 17 and

  197. going on into 18. And in Him all things hold

  198. together, and He is the head of the body, the church.

  199. He is the beginning, the first born from the dead, that in

  200. everything he may be pre eminent.

  201. Holding all things together means consistency.

  202. Jesus gives everything that we see, feel, touch here.

  203. Everything, everything, all things.

  204. Holding it together means consistency.

  205. Anything that has consistency in the world is because of the Lord

  206. Jesus Christ. Amen.

  207. Why? We worship Him.

  208. And the focus shifts very quickly now from Christ's pre

  209. eminence over creation to his pre eminence over redemption

  210. with swift precision. Right here, the metaphor of the

  211. head and the body, made possible by Adam's design, are used to

  212. describe Messiah's sovereignty over redemption.

  213. Now He is the first born from the dead.

  214. Now He has sovereignty over the dead.

  215. Now he has superiority over the dead.

  216. This is one of the clearest texts in the New Testament that

  217. Christ's resurrection is the beginning of a new creation.

  218. Oh yes, we're waiting from his pre existence to when he was a

  219. man. We're waiting for when He comes

  220. again and makes a new heaven and a new earth.

  221. But remember, all things are created for Him, which includes

  222. the future. He is creating things new now.

  223. He is making a new creation. Now He has made you a new

  224. creature. He is renewing His church.

  225. And when we talk about the redeemed creation, what is the

  226. most precious part of that? To the sun?

  227. The church, and we see the word here that's used throughout the

  228. Old Testament and the New Testament for the church.

  229. The word is ecclesia. It means to be called out.

  230. Abraham was called out, Israel was called out, you were called

  231. out. You are part of the ecclesia.

  232. You are part of the Lord's church.

  233. You are the most precious thing to the sun.

  234. And through his obedience and death and resurrection and

  235. ascension, Jesus becomes a new kind of humanity, because he

  236. rises first, born from the dead, and ascends to heaven to become

  237. the first human being in all of history to be at the helm of the

  238. universe. Isn't that a beautiful thought

  239. that at the helm of the universe right now is the same pre

  240. existent second person of the Godhead who took on flesh just

  241. like you and me, and now that risen and ascended perfect

  242. person is at the helm of the universe?

  243. Hallelujah. Adam was made from dust, but

  244. Christ came from heaven. Adam failed, but Christ

  245. prevailed. Adam passed on death, but Christ

  246. gives resurrection life to those that belong to him.

  247. First Corinthian said the first man, Adam became a living being.

  248. The last Adam became a life giving spirit.

  249. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the natural and

  250. then the spiritual. The first man was from the

  251. earth, the man of dust. The second man is from heaven.

  252. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust.

  253. And as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of

  254. heaven. Just as we are born the image of

  255. the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of

  256. heaven, says First Corinthians verse 19.

  257. Let's finish up verse 19. For in him all the fullness of

  258. God was pleased to dwell. Echoes the familiar Christmas

  259. verse. We hear this time when John 114

  260. says, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we hear

  261. about how Jesus tabernacled among us because the temple and

  262. the Tabernacle is the place on earth where God was present.

  263. And when Jesus comes, all the fullness of the Trinity is

  264. dwelling in Jesus. God with the same words are used

  265. in Psalm 68. God was well pleased to dwell in

  266. Zion. The Lord will dwell in the holy

  267. place. Where's the holy place now?

  268. Jesus? Jesus is the temple.

  269. Jesus is the Tabernacle. God is pleased to dwell in him,

  270. verse 20, and through him to reconcile himself to all things,

  271. whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the

  272. cross. And here is Jesus first born

  273. from the dead, bringing reconciliation by giving himself

  274. and redeeming his ecclesia, his Church, where he triumphs

  275. victoriously over death and gives his people eternal life.

  276. So the question is, is Christ preeminent in your life?

  277. Is he first in your heart, in the way you think, in the way

  278. you feel, in the way you act, in the way you worship, in the way

  279. you conduct your business? Think about church ministry,

  280. lead your family, interact with Co workers, love your husband or

  281. your wife or your family or your friends or the way you forgive

  282. others. Is Christ first, Is Christ

  283. first. Holy Spirit, we bow before you

  284. and we thank you for these majestic words.

  285. We thank you that in Him the whole fullness of Deity dwells

  286. bodily, and though we cannot comprehend it, nor will we until

  287. we see you, you have been filled.

  288. We have been filled in Him who is the head of all rule and

  289. authority in this majestic and mysterious and income

  290. uncomprehensible majesty and description of who you are.

  291. Now you invite us to your table. We have heard your majesty and

  292. your transcendence, and now we will see and taste your love and

  293. presence. Ho, Spirit of the Lord, thank

  294. you for caring for us so tenderly, so beautifully, and so

  295. perfectly. In your name we pray.

  296. Amen.
