  1. If you were able, would you please stand for the reading of

  2. God's Word this Christmas Eve? We'll be reading from the Gospel

  3. of Luke, chapter 2, beginning with verse 8.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  4. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field,

  5. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  6. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory

  7. of the Lord shown around them, and they were filled with great

  8. fear. The Angel said to them, fear

  9. not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will

  10. be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in

  11. the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

  12. And this will be a sign for you. You'll find a baby wrapped in

  13. swaddling clothes and lying in a Manger.

  14. And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the

  15. heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the

  16. highest and on earth, peace among those with whom he is

  17. pleased. When the angels went away from

  18. them into heaven, the shepherd said to one another, Let us go

  19. over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which

  20. the Lord has made known to us. And they went with haste, and

  21. found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a Manger.

  22. And when they saw it, they made known the saying they've been

  23. told to them concerning this child.

  24. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherd's told them.

  25. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her

  26. heart. The Shepherd's returned,

  27. glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as

  28. it had been told them. This is the word of the Lord.

  29. You may be seated. The Gospel of Luke begins with

  30. this opening declaration. Luke writes in as much as many

  31. have undertaken, to compile a narrative of the things that

  32. have been accomplished among us, and just as those who are from

  33. the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the Word, and

  34. have delivered them to us. It seemed good to me also,

  35. having followed all things closely from some time past, to

  36. write an orderly account that you may have certainty

  37. concerning the things you have been taught.

  38. As Luke begins his gospel, he tells us that everything he is

  39. recorded for us, written down in the Holy Scriptures, in the

  40. Gospel of Luke, has come from eyewitness testimony.

  41. It's an orderly account that Luke has recorded that

  42. generations of people just like you and just like me would hear

  43. these words and read these words and have certainty that every

  44. single thing that we hear and every single thing that we read

  45. and these pages is true. What that means for us on this

  46. Christmas Eve, that as we gather together and we hear and

  47. rehearse the Christmas story, once again, we are coming

  48. together not to hear a fable or a fairy tale.

  49. It's not an allegory or some kind of metaphor for joy or

  50. peace. Of the Christmas story is the

  51. eyewitness account, the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and

  52. the Savior of the world. This is history.

  53. In fact, it's the turning point of all of history.

  54. And there were witnesses. In fact, what we hear in the

  55. Gospel of Luke is that there were two witnesses, 2 witnesses

  56. that represent a cosmic display, the entire universe that God has

  57. made bearing witness that Christ is born.

  58. Those two witnesses are heaven and earth.

  59. And on that night, 2000 years ago, heaven and earth met in a

  60. small village in the middle of nowhere in the Middle East

  61. called Bethlehem. And there heaven and earth met

  62. and declared that Christ is born.

  63. And so we gather tonight, not for the sake of tradition or

  64. ritual, because this is what we do in our culture, but we gather

  65. tonight to hear once again the eyewitness testimony that Christ

  66. is born, the witness of heaven and earth, that your Savior is

  67. here. The first witness that we see in

  68. the Gospel of Luke is the witness of heaven.

  69. Once you look with me at verse 8, Luke tells us in verse 8 that

  70. the same region there were shepherds out in the field and

  71. they were keeping watch over the flock by night, and an Angel of

  72. the Lord appeared to them. Now children, I want you to

  73. imagine what it would be like for you to keeping watch over a

  74. bunch of sheep and you're straining your eyes in the

  75. middle of the dark trying to make sure that you have all of

  76. the sheep that have been entrusted to you.

  77. Maybe you're counting all of them and as you're straining

  78. your eyes to make sure 12345 all of a sudden in the darkness a

  79. light appears that illuminates the night sky.

  80. In verse 9 it says an Angel of the Lord appeared to them and

  81. the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were filled

  82. with great fear. Now anytime you see the word

  83. glory in the Bible, it's often associated with light,

  84. brightness and shining it. The glory of the Lord is His

  85. very presence. And the word glory literally

  86. means weight, heaviness. It's that when you are in the

  87. presence of God, you can feel it.

  88. And for these shepherds outside of Bethlehem, they could see it,

  89. light illuminating the darkness, and it we we're told by Luke

  90. that they were filled with fear. Now, that might seem like a

  91. strange response to you, but if you're really putting yourself

  92. in these shepherd's shoes, you would be afraid to where did the

  93. light come from? And then as you trace the light,

  94. you see that it came from the glory of God accompanying the

  95. presence of an Angel. And suddenly in verse 10, this

  96. Angel begins to speak. The Angel says, fear not, for

  97. behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be with all

  98. the people. For unto you is born this day in

  99. the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

  100. This Angel is declaring that not only Christ is born, but it's

  101. the fulfillment of prophecy. Now what you need to know about

  102. the word Christ. When we say Jesus Christ, we're

  103. not saying Jesus is his first name and Christ is his last

  104. name. But the word Christ is a title.

  105. It's the Greek word, original language of the New Testament

  106. for Messiah. And the Messiah was the

  107. long-awaited Savior king who was going to come to save God's

  108. people from their sins. So in other words, this Angel is

  109. telling a bunch of shepherds that the Savior King has finally

  110. come and he's long been foretold.

  111. And the prophet Micah, Micah 52 Micah the prophet says that the

  112. Savior, this Savior king would be born in Bethlehem.

  113. And then in verse 12, the Angel goes on and says, there will be

  114. a sign for you, and you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling

  115. claws and lying in a Manger. This sign was foretold years

  116. before by the prophet Isaiah. This Isaiah 7 verse 14.

    Isaiah 7:14

  117. Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign.

  118. Behold, the Virgin will conceive and bear a son, so call his name

  119. Emmanuel. What's the point?

  120. All of the scriptures have been leading up to this moment.

  121. All of the prophets waiting for the birth of the Savior, King,

  122. the Messiah, the Christ. All of heaven has been waiting

  123. for this moment when Christ the Savior would be born.

  124. The prophets foretold it would be in Bethlehem.

  125. The prophets were told that he would be born of a virgin.

  126. The prophets foretold that He would be the King of kings and

  127. the Lord of Lords, that the government would be on his

  128. shoulders, that He would being priests and salvation to all who

  129. trust in His name. And here's this Angel declaring

  130. that all of this has finally come to pass.

  131. Heaven is bearing witness that Christ is born, and it's not

  132. just one Angel. But then in verse 13, we're told

  133. suddenly it was a multitude of angels, the night sky filled

  134. with a multitude of a heavenly host praising God and giving him

  135. glory. You see, when you are in the

  136. presence of the glory of God, and you truly see God for who He

  137. is, you cannot help but glorify Him.

  138. God's glory is his presence. Our response and worship is to

  139. glorify Him. And that's exactly what the

  140. angels do on this night outside of a little village named

  141. Bethlehem. These angels praise God and they

  142. give him glory. Why?

  143. Because Christ the Savior was born.

  144. They sing glory to God in the highest on earth.

  145. Peace among those with whom He is pleased.

  146. Christ, the long-awaited Savior, King offering peace, not just

  147. the absence of fear, but the kind of peace that we need

  148. between US and God. You see, because this Savior had

  149. come to be born in a Manger in order to die on a cross.

  150. This is the second witness we see here in the gospel of Luke.

  151. Not just the witness of heaven. We also see the witness of

  152. earth, the shepherds. Verse 15, the angels went away

  153. from them, from heaven, and the shepherd said to one another,

  154. Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has

  155. happened, which the Lord has made known to us.

  156. Now I want you to pretend that you know a king is coming, a

  157. king that everybody's been waiting for, and you know that

  158. this king is going to be born. If you were writing this story,

  159. how would you announce that king?

  160. Would you bring a band and trumpets?

  161. Would you bring an army? Who would you tell first?

  162. Would you go and gather all of the kings and kingdoms of the

  163. earth and make sure that they're the first to hear that the

  164. long-awaited King of Kings is born?

  165. That's not what God did. God sent his angels to a bunch

  166. of lowly and humble shepherds, keeping watch of their sheep by

  167. night. These shepherds were the first

  168. to hear that Christ the Messiah is born.

  169. And as they heard this, they went in verse 16 and they went

  170. with haste and found Mary and Joseph and a baby lying in a

  171. Manger. If you were writing this story,

  172. the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the

  173. long-awaited Savior King, the Conqueror who's finally come to

  174. set us free, where would that baby be Born In a palace,

  175. amongst jewels and treasures. That's not what God did.

  176. No, God sent the King, his son, to be born in humility, in a

  177. Manger. And so here's the scene.

  178. The long-awaited Savior King in the form of a weak and helpless

  179. baby, born in a barn, lying in a Manger, surrounded by sheep and

  180. shepherds. Why did God do it this way?

  181. So that you and I could be witnesses to you.

  182. See, God sent his Son Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords,

  183. not with a sword in his first and not with an army, but he

  184. sent them into humility to take on the sin of our flesh.

  185. Jesus Christ was born in a Manger in order to die on a

  186. cross. So that this Christmas Eve, just

  187. like the many Christmas Eves that have gone before this one,

  188. we would gather together once again and tell the true story

  189. that our Savior is here. And so the question for all of

  190. us tonight is this. Are you a witness to see just as

  191. Christ came to us 2000 years ago, The story is not over yet,

  192. and one day Christ will come again in his second advent.

  193. Until that day comes, He comes to us now.

  194. He comes to you. He comes to you through the

  195. scriptures. He comes to you through prayer.

  196. And He comes to you tonight as we gather together and sing

  197. these carols. He comes to you and as we gather

  198. after this with family and friends, we give gifts, we're

  199. bearing witness, we're joining with the shepherds and all the

  200. host of heaven, and together we are declaring Christ the Savior

  201. is born. Let's pray, Father in Heaven,

  202. help us now to receive this gift, the gift of your Son who

  203. died in our place on the cross for our sins.

  204. We pray as we tell this story, as we hear it again, as we sing

  205. it to one another. We pray that it wouldn't just be

  206. words on a page. We pray that you, Jesus Christ,

  207. the very word of God would penetrate our hearts, that we

  208. would receive you as our Savior and that and gathering tonight

  209. and worshipping you as your as as our Savior, that we as your

  210. people would join with all of heaven and all of the earth to

  211. give you glory and to worship for you have come down to be

  212. with us. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
