  34. It's the beautiful, the talented, the all round good egg, which is Ellie Light.

  35. Ellie, how are we doing?

  36. Yeah, really

  37. Ellie Light: well.

  38. Thank you.

  39. Slightly nervous about this microphone placement already.

  40. Matt Edmundson: Already was slightly nervous about microphone placement.

  41. We've just been chatting.

  42. This is if you're new to Crowd Church, warm welcome to you, by the way.

  43. Ellie is you've been a speaker before on Crowd, but you've

  44. never actually hosted before.

  45. That's correct.

  46. Correct.

  47. Ellie Light: Are you nervous?

  48. Yeah.

  49. Matt Edmundson: A little bit.

  50. A little bit.

  51. Yes.

  52. Welcome Ellie to Crowd Church.

  53. Thank you for hosting.

  54. Pleasure to be here.

  55. I'm excited.

  56. Ellie's first time hosting.

  57. Say hi to Ellie in the comments.

  58. Do come and join us in the comments.

  59. Evening Andy, Evening Matt, how are we all doing tonight?

  60. I can see the comments coming in.

  61. And tell me what you think to my new Christmas jumper, by the way.

  62. Ellie Light: it's wonderful.

  63. Do I tell you or do they tell you?

  64. Matt Edmundson: Both!

  65. They're gonna comment about it.

  66. Evening Nicola.

  67. Yeah, they're gonna, they're gonna comment about it as well.

  68. But the, this is such a cool, my Star Wars Christmas jumper.

  69. I'm so excited with this.

  70. I've only got one

  71. Ellie Light: Christmas jumper, really?

  72. Yeah, it's just got a snowman on it.

  73. Matt Edmundson: You don't do the Christmas

  74. Ellie Light: Jumper thing?

  75. No, it has got a carrot that comes out of it though.

  76. Oh,

  77. Matt Edmundson: it's his nose, okay, cool.

  78. Yeah, fair play.

  79. Just the one.

  80. Just the one.

  81. Every year we have a tradition in our house.

  82. I don't know about you guys.

  83. In fact, if you're in the comments, tell us what your Christmas traditions are.

  84. I'd be really curious to know.

  85. But we have this tradition whereby Every Saturday, the first Saturday of

  86. every December, which was yesterday, if people are wondering yesterday

  87. we walked down as a family to the shop that does the Christmas trees.

  88. So we walked from my house through the mystery, which

  89. is a park here in Liverpool.

  90. And we go choose the tree.

  91. And we all make sure that we're happy with the tree, we all get to see the

  92. tree out and then we walk back to the house and then an hour or two later

  93. they deliver the tree and we decorate the tree and we do the house up.

  94. Oh, so you're not even having to carry it?

  95. Oh, that's good.

  96. Yeah, I'm too lazy for that, carrying that through the park.

  97. No!

  98. anD yeah we did our Christmas tree yesterday so the trees

  99. are up, the deckies are up.

  100. And I'm wearing Christmas jumpers because, we're in the run up to Christmas.

  101. Ellie Light: Do you want Christmas do.

  102. What is yours?

  103. So in our family my dad's not really a fan of things being in the house.

  104. Like a settee?

  105. Yeah, just like excessive things that aren't needed.

  106. So we go out on Christmas Eve and we buy a really reduced Christmas tree

  107. for about three quid, because who buys a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve?

  108. Then we decorate it, and that's it, I don't know, it's up for about 3 4

  109. days, really, yeah, oh wow, depressing

  110. Matt Edmundson: yeah, sorry Ellie's dad, that's just wrong on so many

  111. levels, oh dear, that's wrong on so many levels, and his decorations

  112. went up this This weekend as well.

  113. Yeah, I think a lot of people go.

  114. It's the time to do it really.

  115. It is.

  116. We did this thing where actually yesterday cause normally this is a family tradition

  117. for us going to get in the tree, right?

  118. And we because our family in theory has grown over the years, as we have

  119. adopted more and more people and had more and more people come live with

  120. us, have become part of the family.

  121. They've subsequently left, got married.

  122. And so there was like 16 of us going to this, picked the Christmas tree yesterday.

  123. There was a lot of people including Sadaf, who's been on the live stream.

  124. She just sent me a text saying, Oh, I'm coming as well.

  125. I'm going to get a Christmas tree.

  126. So Sadaf and the family came down.

  127. So 17 of us just wandered down, which was amazing.

  128. The guy at the Christmas tree shop did, was overwhelmed by the amount

  129. of the Edmo family coming down, , or Team 53 as we call ourselves.

  130. And , we all then went back to the house and had some food, which I'd

  131. spent four or five hours cooking.

  132. We did, some really nice food.

  133. And so yeah, we by the end of last night, I was absolutely knackered, . Aw.

  134. I was like so we first, I don't do it in November.

  135. Don't do Christmas decorations in November.

  136. And like some people like Jenny Oliver, who works here.

  137. She does Christmas decorations in November.

  138. I'm like, there's just no way.

  139. So Will's put here in the comments your dad, I'm assuming

  140. he's talking to you Ellie.

  141. Your dad sounds like mine.

  142. We went out with a saw and found some scraggy twig on Christmas Eve.

  143. Yeah,

  144. Ellie Light: Brilliant.

  145. Yeah, thankfully we do actually get a real Proper tree.

  146. And it's so cheap then as well.

  147. That's the thing that's amazing about it.

  148. You're getting one, like a really good one for three quid.

  149. Matt Edmundson: But if you think about it, if it's only for

  150. three days, it's a pound a day.

  151. Yeah, great.

  152. But that's how much it costs for a normal Christmas tree all December.

  153. Ellie Light: I'm not paying for it.

  154. Matt Edmundson: But you have, we're going to get into the talk

  155. in a minute, ladies and gentlemen.

  156. We will move on.

  157. Don't panic.

  158. But you have got a new house.

  159. I have.

  160. I say now.

  161. I've been there about a year now.

  162. Yeah.

  163. And have you got the tree

  164. Ellie Light: up?

  165. No, I don't.

  166. I'm actually, I've put some fairy lights around my banister.

  167. And that's it.

  168. That's

  169. Matt Edmundson: as far as you've got so far.

  170. That's as far as I've got.

  171. Now you're in control of your own destiny here in your own house.

  172. Are you going to follow your dad's, I get a tree on Christmas Eve thing?

  173. I'm going to

  174. Ellie Light: go home for Christmas no.

  175. Matt Edmundson: Wow, okay, fair enough.

  176. Matt Crew says he doesn't do Christmas decorations at all.

  177. Why does that not surprise me, Matt?

  178. Nicola, the force is strong with this one.

  179. Yes.

  180. Talking about my jumper.

  181. Oh, very good.

  182. Very good.

  183. So yeah, Christmas.

  184. Merry Christmas to you.

  185. Warm welcome to you.

  186. If you just joined us, like I say, my name is Matt.

  187. This is Ellie and we are Crowd Online Church talking about Christmas.

  188. Cause Christmas is a big thing for the church.

  189. We do like Christmas.

  190. We do have a Christmas service this year, so stay tuned.

  191. We'll give you more information about that later.

  192. But for now we are going to carry on with our conversation through the book of Acts.

  193. We have the beautiful.

  194. Anna Kettle: Anna

  195. Ellie Light: Kettle.

  196. I read that off a piece of paper, obviously.

  197. Matt Edmundson: It's just like we did in rehearsals, ladies and gentlemen.

  198. We've got Anna Kettle talking to us about the Book of Acts.

  199. This week it's The Correct Talk.

  200. Matt, I saw you put that in the comments earlier.

  201. We are going to do The Correct Talk today.

  202. God bless the guys last week, that was a little bit of a mess up.

  203. I say mess up.

  204. It was just, it was a beautiful accident is what it was Dan

  205. and John they had a great time.

  206. I was in Paris, so I was just grateful they were doing it if I'm honest with you.

  207. Had a weekend away celebrating 25 years.

  208. Oh, that's nice, isn't it?

  209. Yeah, 25th anniversary, me and Sharon, which was lovely.

  210. So we had a great time in Paris.

  211. Great stuff.

  212. So all that said, I am gonna push this button on the pad.

  213. We're gonna have Anna on the talk, then Ellie and I will be back

  214. after this for Conversation Street.

  215. Get busy writing your comments, questions, thoughts, stories, and all

  216. that sort of stuff in the comments.

  217. We'll be back soon.

  218. Here's Anna.

  219. Anna Kettle: Hi there.

  220. So today I'm talking about Paul's journey to Jerusalem.

  221. You can read all about this story in Acts chapter 21.

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  222. So we're continuing our series looking at the book of Acts today and passage on.

  223. Looking at, and have been asked to speak on, is Acts 21, verse 1, 3 to 36.

    Acts 21:1

  224. Now that's quite a long passage, so I'm not going to read it all here right now.

  225. Instead, I'm going to just summarize the narrative, what happens in that passage

  226. to give us a little bit of context for this talk, and then suggest that maybe

  227. you can go away and look at it in your own time and read it in more detail.

  228. So basically, just to take us to the beginning of the chapter then, so Paul

  229. is planning to go to Jerusalem to share the good news, to encourage the believers

  230. there, and also share the good news with those that aren't believers yet.

  231. And the first part of this chapter just follows his journey as he travels through

  232. the Greek Isles through courts and raids, then he goes down past Cyprus on a boat.

  233. And then onto the mainland in the Middle East, so he first goes through Syria and

  234. then down into Lebanon, below it, and then down on into Israel, into Jerusalem,

  235. which is his ultimate destination.

  236. However, this journey that he's taking is not straightforward.

  237. No longer he receives a number of warnings not to go to Jerusalem because he's

  238. going to be arrested there and that it's going to be dangerous for him to go.

  239. Now, the first time this happens along the journey in this passage is

  240. when he lands in Tyre, which is in Lebanon, and the Christians there are

  241. warning him not to go to Jerusalem.

  242. They say that the Holy Spirit have taught them that it's going to be dangerous,

  243. and so they're warning him not to go.

  244. And yet, as much as he hears their pleas and their concerns for him, he

  245. says, no, I'm going to go to Jerusalem.

  246. This is what God's told me to do.

  247. I'm going to go.

  248. And then later on in this journey, again, as he's traveling down into

  249. Israel and towards Jerusalem, he's getting placed to his destination.

  250. He's traveling through an area called Caesarea, which is to the north of Israel.

  251. And as he's travelling through there, he receives a warning

  252. from a prophet called Achebes.

  253. Now, Achebes, again, has very clearly heard a word from God.

  254. He's had a prophecy and he goes to tell Paul when he's staying

  255. with Philip the Evangelist.

  256. He says that the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem are planning to arrest

  257. him and hand him over to the Gentiles when he arrives there.

  258. Then so again, the Christians are disciples there.

  259. The follow Jesus there in that area hear this and they peed where they're not go.

  260. They're understandably concerned for his safety and worried that he's gonna be

  261. arrested or that horn won't come to him.

  262. That he could even be chilled if he's arrested when he gets to Jerusalem.

  263. So they're saying, don't go and yet pause, answer.

  264. It's really interesting at this point.

  265. He says this, he says, Why are you weeping and breaking my heart?

  266. I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem

  267. for the name of the Lord Jesus.

  268. Wow, that is quite a severe answer, isn't it?

  269. It's quite intentional, there's nothing that is going to move him or

  270. dissuade him from going to Jerusalem.

  271. He's like very single minded about going because he believes God's told him.

  272. And finally the Christians there realize, and so they give up, they realize they

  273. can't stand in his way, that he's going to go, that he believes God's told him to

  274. go and that he has to be obedient to that.

  275. And in the end they resolve saying, okay, the Lord's will be done then.

  276. And of course, Paul continues on his journey and he does go to Jerusalem.

  277. And of course, when he does, sure enough, false accusations

  278. are thrown at him by the local religious leaders there in Jerusalem.

  279. And so he is arrested and he is imprisoned for his faith.

  280. Now, that's the kind of context of the story.

  281. I don't know about you, but I find this slightly confusing chapter.

  282. It's weird, isn't it?

  283. That Paul feels that God has told him to go and to preach the gospel in Jerusalem.

  284. And so he's got this clear word from God.

  285. And yet, along his journey, the Holy Spirit sends loads of different warnings

  286. for the danger ahead in his journey.

  287. And then he still goes straight into that danger anyway.

  288. It leaves me feeling what's the point of all that?

  289. What is this passage trying to tell us?

  290. On the one hand, is Paul being disobedient to God by ignoring all of these

  291. warnings and going into, the danger?

  292. Is he being silly?

  293. I'm not sure I would have gone if I'd received so many warnings about being

  294. arrested and possibly a threat in my life.

  295. Is he being disobedient to God?

  296. Is he ignoring the warnings of the Holy Spirit?

  297. But then equally, is God contradicting himself?

  298. Because he's already told Paul to go, and Paul feels so

  299. confident that he should be going.

  300. So then why is the Holy Spirit seeming to contradict what

  301. God has already said to him?

  302. It doesn't make any sense to me.

  303. Paul feels very strongly that God's told him to get in there and he's acting on

  304. that conviction but now he's getting all these warnings, danger ahead.

  305. I Guess there's three simple points that I want to pull out of this

  306. passage which might just help us with some of our understanding of it.

  307. The first one is this, it's that God always prepares us for what he asks of us.

  308. I'll say that again, God always prepares us for what he asks of us.

  309. So just going back to that question about why God sent those

  310. warnings to Paul and he still went.

  311. Personally, I think that those warnings from the Holy Spirit were

  312. intended to prepare Paul, but not necessarily to stop him from going.

  313. And I think there's a difference, isn't there?

  314. That they're about preparing his heart, about getting him ready for what lies

  315. ahead, for the challenges that lie ahead in the road ahead of him on this journey.

  316. That's not, being warned about what lies ahead doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong

  317. for him to go, or that he shouldn't go, that the other Christians around him were

  318. saying, don't go, but that's their inhuman projections and their own anxieties,

  319. that them talking about their own fears, that's not necessarily what God's saying.

  320. And so these warnings aren't necessarily a warning not to go, but

  321. just a warning about what lies ahead.

  322. And they helped him to be more prepared and ready for

  323. what God was calling him into.

  324. And yet, I wonder how often we make a similar mistake where, when hardship

  325. comes, we're too quick to give up.

  326. I Wonder sometimes when things get hard in our own journeys of faith, or when we

  327. meet resistance or hit difficulties along the way that we suddenly start to question

  328. whether, was that really God's will?

  329. That questions that.

  330. Was it really what God wants of us?

  331. Is it still really what God wants of us?

  332. Are we still on the right path?

  333. Have we heard God right?

  334. And we're so quick to question and to doubt what God's asked

  335. of us when difficulty comes.

  336. But sometimes those difficulties don't mean that we're on the wrong path

  337. or that we're not hearing God right.

  338. It just means that path is hard.

  339. Difficulties don't mean that you're on the wrong path.

  340. Often they mean that you're on the right path.

  341. And that is just a difficult journey that you're undertaking.

  342. And that brings me on to my second point, which is that Paul was so willing to take

  343. risks and endure hardship for his faith.

  344. He was so willing to go through difficulty.

  345. He was warned of incredible hardship ahead, that he'd be arrested and

  346. imprisoned, and that he could potentially even die or be putting his life at risk.

  347. And yet he didn't seem to hesitate in any way, even though others around him.

  348. We're really anxious and telling him not to go.

  349. He didn't hesitate because he knew what God had told him and he didn't

  350. doubt it and he didn't waver on it.

  351. Now, I'm not suggesting that those similar kinds of troubles are probably going to

  352. face many of us in our own walks of faith.

  353. At least not here in the UK.

  354. I know that some Christians elsewhere in the world right now can sometimes face

  355. persecution, arrest, imprisonment, maybe even death for their faith, but that's

  356. not common, certainly not here in the UK.

  357. And so Yeah, but at the same time, it makes me think there are other

  358. risks that we're asked to take for our faith sometimes, aren't they?

  359. Even very small ones, and I wonder how willing we are we

  360. willing like Paul to not hesitate?

  361. Do we actually hesitate when those small difficulties come?

  362. Do we hesitate when we're worried about feeling a bit embarrassed about

  363. talking about our faith to people that don't share it or understand it?

  364. Are we potentially worried about sounding a bit weird or about having our attentions

  365. misunderstood or misinterpreted when we share about our experiences with God?

  366. There's so many different levels of risk and different types of hardship that we

  367. can be asked to endure for our faith.

  368. I don't think many of us have had to endure to the point of

  369. arrest or imprisonment or death.

  370. And the third part that I wanted to just pull out of this passage was that

  371. enduring hardship is actually part of what it means to follow Christ.

  372. I know this isn't a particularly popular message, particularly in all

  373. Western churches where we're quite used to being quite comfortable in

  374. our faith, but actually when you read about the early church here in the

  375. book of Acts, you just can't get away from the truth that following Jesus

  376. isn't always easy or comfortable.

  377. thE word Christian.

  378. Literally means Follower of Christ I am, Christ Follower, and yeah, I wonder

  379. how many of us who call ourselves Christians, who say that we believe

  380. in and follow Jesus, aren't actually that willing to follow him into

  381. difficult things, into hardships, into discomfort, into putting others before

  382. ourselves, um, into Making ourselves uncomfortable through our faith and, I

  383. count myself in this challenge as well.

  384. I find this stuff hard.

  385. I actually see some real parallels in this story about Paul troubling

  386. towards Jerusalem and knowing that there's hardship ahead of his

  387. journey and also the story of Jesus before his arrest and crucifixion.

  388. In the Gospels, before Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane

  389. and ultimately faced a horrific death in the cross, there's at least three

  390. times in the Gospel accounts of his life where he predicts his own death

  391. to his disciples and his followers.

  392. And there's possibly other more subtle references that he knew what was coming

  393. too, but there's certainly at least three occasions in the Gospel accounts

  394. where Jesus Makes it clear that he knows what's coming, he knows what's

  395. ahead in his own journey as well.

  396. He knows that a cross is coming and that he'll be arrested.

  397. Yeah, it's challenging, isn't it?

  398. And just like Paul, Jesus didn't shy away from that difficult road ahead.

  399. When he faced imminent death, these were some of the final words that he spoke.

  400. He said, Father, if you are willing to take this cup away from me, and yet not

  401. my will, but your will be done, you can read that passage in Luke 22 verse 42.

    Luke 22:42

  402. And it strikes me that's not that different Paul's response

  403. here in, in the Book of Acts.

  404. iS it?

  405. He's, The conclusion here is the Lord's will be done.

  406. That was the conclusion that the disciples came to when he refused to change course

  407. or to stop in his journey, to not carry his journey on into difficult things.

  408. And it leaves me feeling that challenge of, I wonder how many of us

  409. are willing, toss that, say the same kind of thing when things get hard

  410. in journey of faith with challenges coming our lives when God asks us to do

  411. something and then to go and gets tough.

  412. How many of us can say a similar thing, not my will Lord for yours be done.

  413. As I said, not many of us are going to be asked to, lay down our lives for our

  414. faith, at least not in this country, or threatened with arrest and imprisonment.

  415. But, there are other things that we may have to surrender to God.

  416. How many of our comforts are right?

  417. Are we willing to part with our cash when Jesus asks us to give someone

  418. a wage someone who needs something?

  419. Or to part with our material things?

  420. Or to give up our time when Jesus asks us to serve someone who needs something?

  421. Are we willing to give a poll right to a certain kind of

  422. lifestyle or quality of life?

  423. Are we willing to put relationships or family or career or other things second

  424. to what Jesus is calling us to do?

  425. iT's, there's one example that I've got from my life in the

  426. last couple of years where.

  427. I had an opportunity to take a promotion at work, and this promotion would

  428. have meant quite a significant amount more money, and I would be paid quite

  429. a bit more, and a lot of colleagues were saying you should go for it,

  430. you'll totally get it if you go for this, you can do this job, it's almost

  431. certainly yours if you go for this role.

  432. At the same time, it's quite a lot more responsibility and time commitment too.

  433. And, I prayed about it and thought about it for a number of days and

  434. I just didn't really feel any peace in myself about going for this role.

  435. And it was because I felt like the role was going to take me away from

  436. some of the other things that God was calling me to do in my spare time.

  437. It was going to take me away from being spending enough time with

  438. my family, but also from different ways that I was serving him.

  439. Even doing things like this, like doing talks for Crowd Church,

  440. or podcasting, or writing.

  441. Other things that I, ways that I feel like God's asked me to serve them.

  442. And I didn't go for the role.

  443. And it, that might not be the area of challenge for everyone right now.

  444. It may not be that God's asking you to put your career second to you.

  445. They're following him.

  446. I wonder if there are any other areas of your life where Jesus is asking you

  447. to take a risk, or maybe to count the cost by choosing obedience to him over

  448. your own comfort or unusual preferences.

  449. thEre's loads of different areas where this can apply.

  450. And it might be a very different challenge that is coming up in your life,

  451. but as I said, just because something that seems difficult doesn't mean

  452. it's the right or wrong thing to do.

  453. Something that God has called you to do something, he'll give

  454. you the tools to go through it.

  455. And I can say that, or say, It may not be an easy decision

  456. always to be obedient to God.

  457. In all the years that I've been a Christian, I've never once regretted

  458. doing what God has asked me to do, even when it feels challenging or hard

  459. at the time to make that decision.

  460. So I just want to leave us with that thought today, really.

  461. Perhaps just ask you to take a moment to reflect on that.

  462. So reflect on the cost of following Jesus in your life right now.

  463. And as you do that, I just also want to finish with a short prayer, and I'm

  464. going to pray for us all if that's okay.

  465. So Lord, we're so sorry that we can be slow to do what you're asking

  466. of us sometimes, or reluctant.

  467. Sometimes we don't want to be inconvenienced, or to have our

  468. comfortable lives disrupted, or to really have to count the cost.

  469. And in these times.

  470. I just ask that you'd help us to remember how much you have given up for

  471. us and how you paid the ultimate cost.

  472. Because you're an innocent man who died on the cross as a sacrifice for us.

  473. You went and you did all that in our place.

  474. And so I pray that in response to that you would help us to say in every situation

  475. that we come across, just as Jesus did and as so many other Christians have done too,

  476. Lord, I'm finding it hard to say yes to what you're asking of me right now, today.

  477. Yet, not my will, but your will be done.

  478. In Jesus name,

  479. Matt Edmundson: Amen.

  480. Amen.

  481. Amen to that.

  482. Oh, great talk by Anna.

  483. I love that.

  484. We're going to get into that.

  485. We're going to get into this whole thing that Anna was, jeez,

  486. what a lot to get into there.

  487. So we're going to get into all that.

  488. Make sure you write your questions, comments, thoughts in the comments below.

  489. And we will get to those as well.

  490. What a great talk though, Anna.

  491. Loved it.

  492. Loved it.

  493. Loved it.

  494. Thank you.

  495. Yeah.

  496. What did you like about it?

  497. I'd say is maybe the wrong word.

  498. What was the key point do you think that stood out to you in that talk?

  499. Ellie Light: I'm not sure necessarily a key point, but I think what was

  500. really, I found really powerful about it was just the honesty of it.

  501. I think talking about the hard things in faith is really important.

  502. I'm not necessarily sure we do it enough.

  503. I think it's very easy to walk into Christianity and think, Oh, great.

  504. This is brilliant.

  505. Everyone says how wonderful it is and now everything's

  506. going to be better afterwards.

  507. After I've met Jesus and all of this, but actually, wE still

  508. face really difficult things.

  509. The answer is that he's with us in them.

  510. Not that they disappear or and particularly on this, that it's

  511. so challenging that God's then asking to actually go into a

  512. physically dangerous situation.

  513. Ooh, I'd find that hard.

  514. Matt Edmundson: God's not asked you to do that recently.

  515. I take it.

  516. No, not

  517. Ellie Light: recently.

  518. No.

  519. Matt Edmundson: It's yeah, no, not at all.

  520. iT's interesting.

  521. Yeah it's funny, isn't it?

  522. This constant conversation.

  523. We've been working our way through the book of Acts, right?

  524. And one of the things that has come up consistently in the Book of Acts

  525. and we've brought it up a number of times on the live stream, is this

  526. idea that you cannot read the Book of Acts and go, yeah, Christianity is

  527. sunshine, rainbows and unicorns, right?

  528. It just isn't.

  529. But what you can do is say that Christianity is a God who is with you.

  530. And actually, the path that you go is not always easy.

  531. But he is always with you on it, right?

  532. And I think this is brought out again in this This portion of scripture.

  533. What's interesting to me about what you said and about what we read in the book

  534. of Acts is the reason for the hardship.

  535. If that makes sense.

  536. So sometimes we go through hardships or difficulties because let's be frank.

  537. We were stupid.

  538. Yeah, do you know what I mean?

  539. We made some rather.

  540. Rather strange decisions along the way.

  541. A classic one for me is I don't, you can see, part of my

  542. right index finger is missing.

  543. And so that was not a pleasant time.

  544. When I had my accident, I cut through three of my fingers.

  545. My youngest son, my middle child, Zach was like weeks old, weeks old.

  546. Maybe days old.

  547. He was super young.

  548. And I made a stupid mistake.

  549. I took the safety guard off a saw.

  550. Oh,

  551. Ellie Light: never do that.

  552. Matt Edmundson: Where were you 20 years ago?

  553. But it was something that I had to go through.

  554. And I cannot in all of those circumstances go.

  555. It was.

  556. It was something that God wanted for my life, right?

  557. And it was a mistake that I made.

  558. It was a stupid decision that I made that cost me.

  559. Yeah.

  560. And that resulted in hardship.

  561. Does that make sense?

  562. In more ways than one, in a lot of ways, it's affected us.

  563. And in ways that, we've we've learned to live with it, but I'm always

  564. reminded that actually There were enough warnings from God never to take

  565. the safety guard off the saw you don't even need God to warn you to do that

  566. Ellie Light: Yeah,

  567. Matt Edmundson: there's common sense yeah, but it turns out

  568. I didn't have any Who knew?

  569. And so Matt's Crew's put in the comments here, Ellie, this

  570. is Matt's I'm an idiot story.

  571. I'm getting that, yeah.

  572. Yeah.

  573. Nicholas put safety first.

  574. Yeah, thanks guys.

  575. Appreciate it.

  576. Just, give me the heads up now.

  577. But it was, it's fascinating, isn't it?

  578. So we, I think we go through difficult things in life because

  579. of decisions that we make.

  580. I can tell you, we'd go all night about the stupid decisions

  581. that Matt's made over his life.

  582. Money.

  583. finances, things with work, that's cost us a lot of money, making really

  584. silly decisions and you're man alive, um, but even when it's my fault, God's

  585. still with me in it, if that makes sense, which is a beautiful thing.

  586. So I think sometimes, in fact, most of the time, I have faced things

  587. And the hardships that I've come across, the reason for them is

  588. because I was a bit of a plonker.

  589. That said, in this story and in certain occasions in my life, I dare say certain

  590. occasions in your life, the reason for the hardship was because God said go.

  591. Do you know what I mean?

  592. And God's told Paul to go into a particularly difficult situation.

  593. And I love what Anna said that The reason it feels, it seems like God is

  594. telling these things to Paul is not to dissuade him but to prepare him.

  595. Yes.

  596. Do you know what I mean?

  597. Yeah.

  598. Now if it was me, I think Anna mentioned this in her talk, if it

  599. was me, I would hear those warnings and I'd be like that's it, I'm out.

  600. This is God telling me not to go.

  601. I would have gone to the beach maybe or something.

  602. I don't know.

  603. But it's interesting that Paul didn't, right?

  604. And so there are sometimes there are some occasions where God deliberately leads

  605. you into places that create hardship.

  606. And that is not an easy theology.

  607. Ellie Light: Yeah, no, I think what I find particularly helpful about this

  608. and weighing up, I quite often get a bit overwhelmed at the idea of, is God

  609. telling me to do this or this and getting quite caught up in like the details of.

  610. Am I hearing from God?

  611. Am I not hearing from God?

  612. And that's usually when I'm like okay, chill out because God doesn't come

  613. into your life to create confusion.

  614. And what I love about this is for Paul, he's so sure that all of his mates

  615. that he's meeting along the way telling him you're going to get hurt and you

  616. might get arrested and you might die.

  617. He is still so sure that he knows that he's going anyway.

  618. Yeah.

  619. And I find that particularly encouraging with the whole, how do I know when

  620. God's speaking to me and when he's not?

  621. Yeah, because actually, if he needs me to know, I'll know, because if Paul can know

  622. and go to it and know that he's walking into that, and be so sure that's what

  623. he needs to do, because God has told him in such a way that he is very sure of

  624. that, then I'm sure he can tell me quite clearly about whether I need to like do

  625. this or do that, do you know what I mean?

  626. Yeah,

  627. Matt Edmundson: absolutely.

  628. Yeah.

  629. Yeah.

  630. So that's what Matt's put here.

  631. In all situations, remember that God can give you the guidance at all

  632. times, which I think is quite true.

  633. It's interesting.

  634. I don't know if we've come across, I can't remember where that's in

  635. the book of Acts is because it's all blurred into one in all the prep.

  636. There's this really interesting part in the book of Acts where Paul goes on

  637. one of his missionary journeys, right?

  638. Paul is, to give you some sort of insight into Paul's character, Paul

  639. is, I think he's an action man.

  640. He's a doing guy.

  641. He's right.

  642. What was the last, he's the kind of guy that would respond to the question,

  643. what was the last thing God said to me?

  644. Let's keep doing that until I feel like God's told me to do something else.

  645. And so he's very much an action guy.

  646. He's the kind of guy that if you said to him, if you, if he was alive today, you

  647. put him in a car on one side of Liverpool city centre and you said Paul you need

  648. to get to the cross the other side.

  649. He's just going to get in a car and go.

  650. he's going to feel his way rather than just wait for all the traffic

  651. lights to turn green and all of the ducks lined up and off he goes.

  652. And neither one is right or wrong.

  653. But this is part, this is why I see in Paul's personality is he's an action guy.

  654. He's a doing guy.

  655. And so he heads off.

  656. On one of his mission trips.

  657. And the way the scripture, but I love the old the old King James version.

  658. Oh yeah.

  659. The way it talks about this, he said the Holy Spirit constrained him.

  660. Oh, he was constrained.

  661. Yeah.

  662. And this is Paul.

  663. This is the Apostle Paul, who wrote two thirds of the New Testament.

  664. He's heading in direction.

  665. It's when he goes that he feels God constraining him.

  666. Yeah.

  667. In other words.

  668. I don't know if Paul knew or didn't know whether this was the right thing to do,

  669. but he's an action guy, so I'm just going to keep going until I'm told otherwise.

  670. And I get that impression in this story that we read today, that

  671. this is Paul, he's okay, so I'm going to get changed, so what?

  672. God's told me to go, so I'm going.

  673. Ellie Light: Mad that he doesn't think that his mates

  674. been like, you're gonna die.

  675. It's God saying, oh, stop.

  676. Matt Edmundson: That's funny, isn't it?

  677. It is funny how we interpret those things.

  678. Yeah.

  679. Yeah, really, because, and this is what again, that in the story.

  680. So the Christians in the story, the church in Jerusalem would

  681. like man, you need to not go.

  682. Yeah, yes.

  683. Yeah.

  684. Everyone was going,

  685. Ellie Light: what are you doing?

  686. I find that so challenging.

  687. I find that really challenging.

  688. Matt Edmundson: But again, you come to being led by God, there's this there

  689. is this very correct teaching in the church, which says, in the mouth of

  690. two or three witnesses, let a thing be established, there is safety in a

  691. multitude of counselors, this, all this stuff when scripture, which talks about,

  692. I'm just trying to scratch my head around the microphone it's just this

  693. whole thing in scripture about listening to one another, bearing one another's

  694. burdens, God speaks to you through other people and here God is speaking, but

  695. Paul had the ability to discern that.

  696. What was preparation versus instruction and that I find very challenging.

  697. Ellie Light: Yeah, me too.

  698. I also love what was it that he said?

  699. I love how emotional Paul is like all the time.

  700. But I just think it's really a nice and encouraging thing.

  701. It's not Oh, an emotional man.

  702. Wow.

  703. It's when he says, why are you weeping and breaking my heart?

  704. I just think that's so oh, I think that's really beautiful because I

  705. can just imagine being like, guys, I just really need encouragement.

  706. Stop stop telling me I'm going to die.

  707. And yeah, breaking my heart like this, it's, it exposes that he is, he's

  708. nervous about this, that he's scared about it and that he is, there's an

  709. element of him being heartbroken at the idea that's what he's walking into.

  710. And yet.

  711. He's still sure that God's telling him to do it and he's gonna do it.

  712. Yeah.

  713. What a cool guy.

  714. I love him

  715. Matt Edmundson: There's this quote of the week, Paul, what

  716. a cool guy And I totally agree.

  717. And again Yeah, it's fascinating, isn't it?

  718. I guess there's two things here There's what the Holy Spirit is saying and then

  719. there's why he is saying it, right?

  720. So the church heard What the Holy Spirit was saying But they

  721. didn't necessarily understand why.

  722. And I think when Paul was talking to them, there's you're breaking

  723. my heart, not because what you're telling me is factually incorrect,

  724. but you've misunderstood the why.

  725. Yeah.

  726. Do you know what I mean?

  727. And I think here is the, again, the challenge for us as Christians is

  728. understanding what God is saying and why God is saying that particular thing, what

  729. and why two very important things, aren't they, and it's a really tricky thing as

  730. a Christian sometimes to understand that.

  731. Because I know sometimes once I've heard the what I just assume the way.

  732. Ellie Light: Yeah.

  733. Do you know what I mean?

  734. This is the first time I'm thinking about it, to be honest.

  735. Matt Edmundson: Nicholas put here, I often look, if I add that to the broadcast,

  736. I've just reformatted this computer.

  737. So I don't know if this is going to work, or if it's all set up.

  738. Oh, look.

  739. I often look back on some of the tough times I've had, and they

  740. have been very tough and hard.

  741. Would I change the choices I made?

  742. No, it's made me who I am.

  743. And also I'm able to help others going.

  744. Yeah, actually, that's true.

  745. That's very true.

  746. But I changed some of the choices that I've made that comes into this interesting

  747. topic of conversation called regret.

  748. Yes.

  749. Ellie Light: Oh, that's fun.

  750. That's fun isn't it?

  751. , Matt Edmundson: regret.

  752. Is regret a good thing, a bad thing?

  753. What do you regret?

  754. What would you change if you could go back in time and change it?

  755. Is thinking about what you could change and going back in time and if

  756. you could go back in time, a futile exercise 'cause you can't do it and

  757. you're just, you're living in the past.

  758. And Paul, another thing that Paul said is, I forget what's past, I

  759. just press on towards the goal.

  760. Again,

  761. Ellie Light: so cool.

  762. I just, I think he's brilliant.

  763. I really love Paul.

  764. I know that's like the least original thing to say.

  765. Yeah, no, it's cool.

  766. Okay, interesting.

  767. Is it futile to look back and reflect and regret?

  768. I don't know if it's futile, but we do it, don't we?

  769. Yeah, sometimes

  770. Matt Edmundson: too much.

  771. Ellie Light: Yeah.

  772. Yeah, just part of being human, I think, really.

  773. Yeah.

  774. I think maybe Some people do it too much and sometimes it's easy to fall into it

  775. and as a bit of a pattern, but Also, don't beat yourself up for doing it because

  776. it happens because sad things happen.

  777. Yeah, like to think I wish I'd not done that

  778. Matt Edmundson: I wish I'd bought my Christmas tree earlier.

  779. Ellie Light: Yeah, I'm going to call my dad.

  780. Just regretting all of our Christmases actually, Dad.

  781. All of our

  782. Matt Edmundson: best Christmases.

  783. Sorry if you've just joined in.

  784. That joke won't make any kind of sense at all.

  785. Little

  786. Ellie Light: call back there.

  787. Yeah,

  788. Matt Edmundson: you have to go back and watch from the beginning.

  789. That doesn't make sense.

  790. Ellie Light: Interesting.

  791. Matt Edmundson: Anna, Anna said at the end, she was talking about

  792. Paul enjoying hardship, right?

  793. . And how enjoying hardship is actually part and parcel of

  794. what it means to follow Christ.

  795. . And this.

  796. I think Anna, I can't remember the exact phrase she used, but she talked

  797. about how in the Western Church this has become an uncomfortable

  798. truth for our Christian faith.

  799. That's a really interesting thing, isn't it?

  800. What, would the Apostle Paul, with his theology on all of this, be welcoming

  801. most Western churches, do you think?

  802. Would he be welcoming them?

  803. No, would he be welcomed into?

  804. If Paul turned up to crowd or frontline or whatever.

  805. Yeah.

  806. I wonder how we would respond to him.

  807. Because his call is often to, to to vacate, for want of a better

  808. expression, our comfort zone.

  809. Yeah.

  810. Yeah.

  811. Do you know what I mean?

  812. Yeah.

  813. Which is what he's doing here.

  814. Yeah.

  815. Ellie Light: Yeah, I think we're all quite quick to be like, oh, I think,

  816. God wants me to be comfortable.

  817. God wants me to be happy.

  818. God wants me to be Okay.

  819. And yeah, I'm sure there's elements of that, it's not that he wants us to be he

  820. doesn't want us to be, destroyed or have all these things happen to us, but he

  821. also wants us to do what he asks of us.

  822. And it's the fear of those, of losing the comfort, isn't it, that stops us doing it.

  823. Yeah, I think we probably are quite, maybe too comfortable.

  824. I don't know.

  825. It's so hard, isn't it?

  826. Cause then you get into all the different I get into all the different,

  827. like little anxious thoughts about it.

  828. What's the, should I make myself uncomfortable on purpose?

  829. All those things.

  830. Yeah.

  831. Wiggly.

  832. Matt Edmundson: You can't go around in circles.

  833. Sue's put here in the comments, Sue, sorry, has put in the comments, I

  834. regret being in a cult for 25 years and still trying to work out why.

  835. Left 8 years ago many regrets, talking about regrets.

  836. Wow, thanks for sharing that's, and it's put here, you can't change the

  837. past, but it's what you do in the present that can affect the future.

  838. Yeah.

  839. It's interesting, isn't it, when you think about things like that, because

  840. there's a really interesting book that came out recently by Dan Pink.

  841. I don't know where he's, it's not a Christian book, I don't know

  842. where he is in terms of faith.

  843. whEre he talks about the power of regret.

  844. Okay.

  845. All right.

  846. And how you can use regret to, in a way that is powerful.

  847. There's been some really interesting research that has come out recently

  848. on on how to journal about past trauma or past stressful situations.

  849. So when we've been in situations, the way we, there is a protocol

  850. to quote Andrew Huberman about how to journal about that in a way that

  851. helps us deal with it in better ways.

  852. And one of the things that struck me about this podcast, and this is, he's

  853. a neuroscientist human in effect, he, what he said was, and I'm paraphrasing

  854. about an hour and a half's worth of information in effect, what he said

  855. was, um, telling the truth to yourself.

  856. is incredibly powerful.

  857. Yeah.

  858. Great.

  859. Good.

  860. Great.

  861. And as I was listening to him, he was like, the only thing that I, the thing

  862. that was going around in the back of my head all the time is that scripture where

  863. Jesus talks about how you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.

  864. But there's this knowledge of the truth that has to come first.

  865. You have to know the truth for the truth to set you free.

  866. And sometimes with regret, what I find is I can glamorize it or I can overplay it.

  867. And it's all a bit fuzzy, or I'd wish I'd not done that, whereas when we

  868. label it, when we put names on it, when we understand the truth of it,

  869. then we can be free of it, right?

  870. And the thing about regrets, I've It seems the power is in being totally

  871. upfront and honest about them, as opposed to just going, I'll regret that.

  872. And it's just this fuzzy thing in the back of my head that I

  873. don't want to think about because it makes me feel uncomfortable.

  874. Yeah.

  875. Does that make sense?

  876. Ellie Light: Makes loads of sense.

  877. That's great.

  878. Top tip.

  879. No, I think that's really good.

  880. Yeah.

  881. Because, yeah, if you're not really looking at it, if you're not remembering

  882. it properly, if you're not thinking about it properly, so I guess that's the

  883. whole thing of dwelling on it or not.

  884. If you're dwelling on it in.

  885. With the right lens, then you can actually process and be like, Oh

  886. yeah, no, that was really hard.

  887. And that's fine that I was really hard.

  888. That's fine.

  889. I wish I hadn't made that decision, but also.

  890. Recognizing that you couldn't have made any other decision different.

  891. Yeah.

  892. Yeah.

  893. Matt Edmundson: Really interesting.

  894. Fascinating stuff.

  895. So thanks for sharing.

  896. Actually, I should put here.

  897. I have no bitterness but often feel so sad about all the things

  898. that I've missed with my family.

  899. Many died in that time.

  900. Yeah.

  901. My heart breaks for you.

  902. There's no easy answer to things like that other than to thank

  903. God that he's with us right now.

  904. Yeah.

  905. Yeah.

  906. And actually.

  907. I don't know, my theology on this is interesting.

  908. I think all things ultimately are redeemable, right?

  909. With God.

  910. Everything is redeemable.

  911. We can, there's nothing that is beyond his redemption.

  912. I'm utterly convinced of it.

  913. But sometimes we have to deal with and feel the consequences of decisions, right?

  914. So you read the book of Job.

  915. Interestingly spelt job.

  916. You read the book of Job and he goes through this horrific time talking

  917. about enduring hardship, right?

  918. He goes through this horrific time.

  919. And scripture says at the end that God restored him back

  920. twice what he'd lost, right?

  921. Which is really interesting thing.

  922. So in other words, that whole situation was redeemed, but it was redeemed in

  923. certain ways, as in his wealth was twice what it was beforehand, there

  924. were certain things which were better.

  925. But he still lost family members through the whole thing.

  926. And he still had to deal with the loss of his family.

  927. Yeah.

  928. Mad.

  929. Yeah.

  930. Mad is the right word.

  931. So yeah, it's it's one of those, so as I'm I, it's there I believe that

  932. period of your life can be redeemed.

  933. I don't think that always means that we can escape the consequences

  934. of things that have happened.

  935. Yeah.

  936. But I think, I think it was, it is just one of those things

  937. where we just trust God.

  938. Yeah, as cliche and Christian as that sounds.

  939. Yeah,

  940. Ellie Light: I think that's.

  941. Tends to be what the answer always is.

  942. But it's true.

  943. Like even if you're ever in doubt, just going to him and, whether you're making

  944. like big decisions of do I do this?

  945. Or do I do this?

  946. Or, just go, the more time you spend with God, the more, his voice and

  947. the more he knows how to talk to you and you know how to hear him.

  948. And then you'll know whether he's telling you to do this or this.

  949. If you've, if you're regretting something or if something's really

  950. painful going to him, because he knows what you need more so than you do.

  951. And It's got it all.

  952. It's got it

  953. Matt Edmundson: all.

  954. Got it all.

  955. whAt was the name of the book?

  956. So amazing you brought this up the subject of regret.

  957. God bless.

  958. I really wish I could remember the name of the book, but it's by Daniel Pink.

  959. So if you Google Daniel Pink regret I think it will come up.

  960. Like I say, it's not a Christian book.

  961. So I don't know if I'd build a theology from what he said.

  962. And I'm very keen that we don't Crowd and I don't think the Bible and I don't

  963. think Christianity is about self help in a lot of ways, I think it's easy to

  964. try and make it about self help, but it is still a fascinating book to read.

  965. And yeah, I think it's called The Power of Regret or something like that.

  966. Yeah, enjoy that as they say.

  967. So count the cost of following Christ.

  968. It's not always straightforward.

  969. So I guess the question here is, if I look on my life, what are some of the

  970. things that God's asked me to do, which are slightly outside of my comfort zone

  971. that I have to be intentional in doing?

  972. It's a really fascinating question for me because I don't know if

  973. you can grow that much inside your comfort zone, if that makes sense.

  974. Yeah.

  975. And that a lot, don't you?

  976. You actually see that in the physical body, muscles don't

  977. grow unless they're stretched.

  978. I wish I could just sit here and just watch my biceps grow.

  979. That would be amazing.

  980. It seems like God has ordained in such a way that actually, it's in the

  981. hardship, it's in the It's in the stress.

  982. It's when things are not going right that we actually grow the most.

  983. I don't know if you've found that.

  984. Ellie Light: Yes, I would say that.

  985. Um, yes, sorry.

  986. I'm in my head.

  987. I'm distinguishing the difference between having gone through a hard thing that

  988. I've then learned from, and then like recognizing the importance then of

  989. things like, spiritual disciplines that aren't necessarily like as painful as the

  990. hardships that you end up going through.

  991. Yeah, not saying so what do you mean

  992. Matt Edmundson: by spiritual

  993. Ellie Light: disciplines?

  994. Just spending time with God every day, praying, fasting, all those

  995. things that, can sometimes feel like a bit of inconvenience if you're

  996. not in the right headspace for it.

  997. Yeah.

  998. But actually just like.

  999. You can't, you need to exercise, as you're saying to look after your body.

1000. Sometimes you just really can't be bothered.

1001. And some days you're really like, yeah, I'm going to go for a run or

1002. yeah, I'm going to praise the Lord.

  1003. But I'm never,

1004. Matt Edmundson: I'm going to go for a

  1005. Ellie Light: run.

1006. It's the discipline of actually, I know that this is a good thing for

1007. me to do, so I'm going to do it.

1008. And that's the discipline, is it?

1009. And sometimes that feels really uncomfortable.

  1010. And sometimes it doesn't.

1011. And that's the same a similar thing of.

1012. I was just going to try and distinguish that I think there's a line between

1013. oh, you have to go, you have to put yourself through difficult things

1014. to be able to grow because I don't think that's quite the same thing.

1015. But I think that's an unnecessary distinction, because that's

1016. obviously not what you're saying.

  1017. Fair play.

  1018. Matt Edmundson: Yeah.

  1019. Yep.

  1020. Fair play.

  1021. It's true.

  1022. Oh, here we go.

  1023. I have healthy kids.

  1024. Food, a house and a job.

1025. Very blessed, but my heart gets heavy at times.

1026. Yeah, no, I bet it does, mate.

1027. Yeah, I bet it does.

1028. Bless you and all of that.

1029. Yeah I've had a horrendous year this year in some way, says Matt Crew, but

1030. having more time to pray and recover this year has been a highlight in

1031. order to recover my mental health.

  1032. Yes.

  1033. That's the other thing, isn't it?

  1034. It's never waste a good trial.

1035. When you find yourself in difficult times or hard times.

  1036. Yeah, it's yeah.

1037. God, what are you saying in this, right?

1038. And actually, never waste a good trial because there's a lot of

1039. learning that can happen in them.

  1040. Yeah.

1041. There's no doubt about it.

  1042. Anything else?

1043. You took lots of notes, anything else in your notes in the

1044. Ellie Light: last few minutes?

1045. I think we've really covered it, Yeah, oh, I've just hit the mic, sorry.

  1046. Full circle, eh?

1047. Matt Edmundson: Smacked the mic with my book.

1048. How very good, well done.

1049. How did you find it, your first hosting?

  1050. Yeah, it

  1051. Ellie Light: was fun.

  1052. I enjoyed it.

  1053. You're just so

  1054. Matt Edmundson: cool, Ellie.

1055. So chilled out and laid back.

  1056. Me, I'd be like

1057. Ellie Light: She's nice talking about things, isn't

  1058. Matt Edmundson: it?

  1059. Yeah, it's nice having a chat.

1060. Yeah, it's always good fun.

  1061. Always good fun.

1062. That's that's the end of Conversation Street.

1063. We'll draw that to an end there.

  1064. Thank you so much.

  1065. Don't break the mic.

1066. It's very good at telling you what to do after you've done it, Matt.

  1067. I've noticed this.

  1068. Yeah,

  1069. Ellie Light: good.

1070. I suppose that's the nature of the whole live stream, isn't it?

  1071. It's a little out of sync, isn't it?

  1072. Yeah.

  1073. Oh, Bukele again.

  1074. There we go.

  1075. Oh, I know.

1076. Matt Edmundson: Let's get the dates in.

1077. This is what Matt wrote in the comments, if you can't see.

1078. I can add it to broadcast.

1079. There we go, Bukele again.

  1080. Promote the Zoom.

  1081. Yes, I will.

  1082. Alright, Matt, calm down.

1083. Yes, thank you for joining us.

1084. So just to let you know a few things every Wednesday we have a Zoom online group.

1085. Come join us on the Zoom if you'd like to join an online community

1086. that Matt's talking about here where he says promote the Zoom.

1087. That's basically what we do.

1088. We just get together, a few of us on Zoom, we'll chat, we'll catch up, we'll pray,

1089. we'll do all those kind of good things.

1090. If you'd like to join us, we'd love to see you in there.

1091. If you go to the website www.

  1092. crowd.

1093. church or find us on social media at crowdchurch and just reach out

1094. to us, we will let you know those.

  1095. Details.

  1096. Susan, by the way.

1097. Oh, Susan stands for Susan.

  1098. Susan, brilliant.

  1099. Thanks for the laughter.

  1100. Laughter helps.

  1101. It does.

  1102. Yeah, it

  1103. Ellie Light: does.

1104. You could do a whole other episode on that, couldn't you?

1105. Matt Edmundson: Yeah, it says it in the Bible.

1106. Mary Hart does good like a medicine.

1107. Ellie Light: It's so good.

  1108. Yeah.

  1109. Matt Edmundson: Yeah.

1110. And if you need to laugh, my advice, go watch anything by Tim Hawkins.

  1111. Oh, all right.

1112. Have you come across Tim Morgans?

  1113. No.

1114. Christian stand up comedian, which I appreciate sounds like an oxymoron.

  1115. Yeah, it sure does.

1116. Hang on, Christian stand up comedian, what are you talking about?

1117. But I can tell you the chap is exceptionally funny.

1118. He's got a lot of videos on YouTube.

  1119. Yeah.

1120. And In 2018, I went over to the States with Josh and Zach, just dads and

1121. lads trip, just brilliant, loved it.

1122. And we managed to go see him live in Connecticut.

1123. We went and stayed with some folks and we went over to

1124. Connecticut and watched him live.

1125. At the end of that set, I was like, I'm like, please, can you

1126. just stop telling jokes because my sides were hurting so much.

  1127. So good.

  1128. Yeah, he's really good.

  1129. Really good.

1130. So just go, ever need to laugh, go watch Tim

  1131. Ellie Light: Hawkins.

1132. So good to have a giggle.

1133. Matt Edmundson: Ellie, give Matt his Ancient One pills.

  1134. I don't

1135. Ellie Light: get that reference.

1136. Matt Edmundson: Oh, it's just he likes to call me Ancient One.

  1137. Ellie Light: Oh, okay.

1138. And then you have a pill to make you not ancient.

1139. Matt Edmundson: If I did have such a pill, I would be selling them.

1140. I'd make an absolute fortune.

  1141. The ultimate youth pill.

1142. So yes, it's great to connect with you Susan.

  1143. Thanks for joining us.

1144. Like I say, if you'd like to know more about Crowd Head over to the website, www.

  1145. crowd.

1146. church, if you want to know more about the Zoom, everything's on there, www.

  1147. crowd.

  1148. zoom.

1149. You can reach out to us on social media, we'd love to connect with you.

1150. Coming up in next week, what we've got next week.

  1151. Do you remember?

  1152. No!

  1153. Obviously not!

1154. We talked about it an hour ago, Matt, we talked about it, and I did write

1155. stuff down and Ali just looked at it and went, there's no way I can read that.

  1156. I can't

1157. Ellie Light: read it at all, absolutely not.

1158. I can see there's things circled, but I don't know what the circles mean.

1159. Matt Edmundson: It's just highlighting stuff for me to do.

1160. So next week, yes, we are talking about Biblical worldview.

  1161. I say we, it's me.

1162. I'm doing the talk next week.

1163. We have Dan and Will hosting.

1164. So Will Sobworth, he's another first timer.

  1165. Oh, that's fun, isn't it?

1166. Yeah, he was in the comments earlier.

  1167. I don't know if he's, if Will's still around, but he.

1168. His first time hosting next week, like you, he's done talks at Crowd,

1169. but next week's going to be hosting.

  1170. So he's such a legend, Will.

1171. He's such an, he's an absolute legend, love the bones of the

  1172. man, he's such a great guy.

1173. And so I'm excited for next week.

1174. Yes, you've got Will and Dan hosting, you've got me doing the

1175. talk all about biblical worldviews.

  1176. Glorious.

1177. Yeah, let's go with yes.

1178. I'm just racking my brain.

  1179. Was he glad?

  1180. I don't know.

1181. I hope you enjoy the talk.

1182. I hope you find it challenging and informative all at the same time.

1183. His hand sketch is the best.

1184. Are you talking about me, Nicola?

  1185. My hand sketch?

  1186. I'm not quite sure.

  1187. Isn't that the

  1188. Ellie Light: comedy?

  1189. Comedy man.

  1190. Oh,

  1191. Matt Edmundson: yeah.

  1192. Comedian.

  1193. Sorry.

1194. Yeah, Tim Hawkins, his hand sketch is the best.

1195. Yes, he's talking about, I should play that on Crowd Church.

1196. He talks about what happens when I get it now, Nicholas, sorry, I, he's got

1197. this routine, where I think if you just Google or go to YouTube and put in Tim

1198. Hawkins worship hands and what Christians do with their hands during worship.

  1199. Ellie Light: Yeah.

  1200. Very good.

  1201. I can imagine it.

  1202. Matt Edmundson: Yeah.

  1203. Yeah.

1204. Just after this live stream.

  1205. Don't do it now.

1206. When the live stream's ended, just go Google on YouTube, Tim Hawkins

1207. worship hands and it will come up.

1208. I'm fairly sure it will come up.

1209. And it's, if you've been around church any length of time,

1210. you will find that hysterical.

  1211. I think that's good.

1212. I think we'll end the live stream there.

1213. Ellie, thank you for joining me.

  1214. Been a

  1215. Ellie Light: pleasure.

  1216. Thanks for having me.

  1217. You coming back?

  1218. Sure, why not?

  1219. This is so cool.

1220. Got nothing better to do.

1221. Matt Edmundson: Dunno, if I get the curtains up next time.

  1222. Yeah.

  1223. Brilliant.

1224. We need to go get you a Christmas tree, that's what we need to do.

  1225. Yeah.

  1226. So Merry Christmas, everyone.

1227. I hope you find Advent interesting.

1228. Advent's a fascinating time just to reflect on the story of Jesus, the

1229. birth of Christ coming up December 25th.

1230. In case you didn't know, happy birthday, Jesus.

1231. We've got a Christmas service this year.

  1232. whEn is it?

  1233. Matt will know.

1234. I will tell you now when it is cause I've got the information here.

1235. So next week we are talking about worldview.

1236. And then we have our non live stream.

  1237. Where is it?

  1238. Here it is.

  1239. 24th, Christmas Eve.

  1240. Crikey.

  1241. Christmas Eve.

  1242. It's a Christmas on a Monday.

  1243. I'll be

1244. Ellie Light: by my Christmas tree.

1245. Matt Edmundson: Listening to Crowd Church while you're in your

1246. headphones while she's by the church, oh I don't want that one.

1247. Out of the two that are left for 3.

  1248. There's

1249. Ellie Light: always loads left and they're always really good quality.

1250. Matt Edmundson: Yesterday when we went with Jenny and Rob.

1251. Jenny used to live with us.

  1252. She's a paramedic.

1253. She got married last year.

  1254. Yeah.

1255. to A guy called Rob who's also a paramedic, two of the

1256. funniest people on the planet.

  1257. That's nice.

1258. And so we go and choose a tree.

1259. I'm like, I want one that's really wide and bushy.

1260. 'cause it's now bay window.

  1261. Lovely.

  1262. Yeah.

1263. Sadaf was like, I want one that's a bit narrower 'cause we don't

1264. have a big bay window and I still wanna be able to access my room.

  1265. Sensible.

  1266. Which was sensible.

1267. And then Jenny walked over to the guy and said, I just want

1268. one that smells really nice,

1269. . Ellie Light: It is the smell.

  1270. That's the best bit

1271. Matt Edmundson: about it, isn't it?

  1272. The best Christmas.

1273. So we were all walking around smelling the trees.

1274. He must have thought, what's wrong with you?

1275. I think this one smells better, Jen.

  1276. Oh, that's

  1277. Anna Kettle: so nice.

  1278. Oh, now
