  1. The kids are going to go out to Kids Church now, and the rest of us are going to pick up Bibles.

  2. If you haven't got your Bibles open, grab a Bible, turn to Luke 14, and I'm going to pray.

  3. Gracious God, we thank you for the privilege of joining together as your people.

  4. Lord, as we look at your Word now, I pray that we might have ears to hear.

  5. We pray also for our young people departing from us now to their program.

  6. Lord, I pray for them too that you might pour your Spirit out amongst them and upon their hearts and their minds

  7. so that they might have ears to hear and willing hearts to obey.

  8. I pray that for ourselves too, Lord, and we ask for your sake. Amen.

  9. The radio station Today FM used to have what was called the annual celebrity party.

  10. I don't know if they still do. I haven't listened to Today FM for a while, but it was an annual celebrity party.

  11. It was a little misleading though because although there was a couple of famous people, you know, 15-minute fame kind of people there,

  12. the bulk of the party goers were average Joe blows like me.

  13. Not the rich, not the famous.

  14. Those who never really get a chance to mix it with a high life of the famous people.

  15. Apparently it was a great party, an enormous party, a lot of people there, heaps of drink and fun and food and average people like me were there.

  16. It was advertised as the party to beat all parties, the party that everyone wanted to be at.

  17. And one year in their promotion for this celebrity party, they had a guy ring up pretending to be Kerry Packer

  18. to the radio station wanting to buy tickets for this party.

  19. He was promptly told that no amount of money could buy him a ticket to the party.

  20. It was invitation only and he wasn't invited.

  21. Luke 14, Jesus tells the story of the greatest party of all times.

  22. It's a party that we've been all invited to, a party that we have to RSVP for.

  23. It's also a party that no amount of money can purchase a ticket for.

  24. This party is invitation only.

  25. I think it's a surprise to most people to discover that Jesus liked to party as much as anyone else.

  26. He often saw Jesus attending weddings and dinner parties.

  27. But what is really surprising is that he actually describes heaven as a party, as a great banquet,

  28. which is a little bit different from the popular notion of hymns and harps and halos.

  29. It is a big banquet.

  30. And so Jesus is at this dinner party.

  31. He's at a dinner party with some of his disciples and he leans across to the host of the party

  32. and tells him who he should invite to his parties.

  33. It's there in verse 12.

  34. So have a look at Luke 14, verse 12.

    Luke 14:12

  35. When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives or your rich neighbours.

  36. If you do, they may invite you back and so you'll be repaid.

  37. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind and you will be blessed.

  38. It's an amazing thing.

  39. He leans across to the host of the party and says,

  40. don't invite people to your party who you want to be there.

  41. Invite everyone else.

  42. Don't invite your friends, your neighbours, your rich.

  43. In other words, what he's saying is,

  44. I want you to live a life.

  45. Remember Jesus talking about discipleship here.

  46. I want you to live a life where you do things and don't expect to be repaid for it.

  47. But he's so different than us, isn't it?

  48. I mean, isn't it good to be able to do things and get some sort of recognition for it?

  49. It's so much easier to pick up your cross and follow Jesus when there's a crowd clapping,

  50. acknowledging you picking up your cross.

  51. It's so much easier being humble when you can tell people that you've been humble

  52. so they can pat you on the back for being humble.

  53. And Jesus says, don't invite the people who are going to pay you back.

  54. Invite, in fact, he says, the poor, the sick, the crippled, the outcast,

  55. the people who were the outcast in first century Palestine.

  56. Invite those people, the ones who can't pay you back.

  57. Why does he tell us to do that?

  58. Well, that's how God treats us.

  59. It's how God treats us.

  60. This is God's attitude.

  61. The invitation that God gives us to have a relationship with him

  62. and to spend eternity at his banquet table in heaven

  63. is to everyone who doesn't deserve it, everyone who can't pay him back.

  64. God invites the sinful people of this world.

  65. He invites those who live life as if he doesn't exist,

  66. those who go about their daily routine of life

  67. and give no acknowledgement to God whatsoever.

  68. Don't give him a second thought.

  69. Reality is what he's saying is that everyone who dines for eternity

  70. at God's table in heaven will not deserve to be there.

  71. There won't be a single person there who will deserve it,

  72. who would have earned it, who would have bought their way there

  73. simply just because they're there,

  74. because they have accepted the invitation

  75. to join with God for eternity

  76. through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  77. Well, that must have been a party clangor.

  78. But Jesus didn't stop there.

  79. He reclined back in his chair,

  80. started to tell a story about a particular party.

  81. It went something like this.

  82. There was a rich man who organised a party

  83. and he invited heaps of people.

  84. And then when it came time for the party,

  85. he sent his servant out to get them to come on in.

  86. What we've got to realise,

  87. this is a party in first century Palestine.

  88. Parties took a lot longer to organise back in those days.

  89. Nowadays, quick text message,

  90. and you've got, you know, put on food,

  91. and you've got a bunch of teenagers home in no time at all.

  92. But it was different back in those days.

  93. Significantly different.

  94. Kid comes home, wants to have a party.

  95. You know, yes, certainly,

  96. the food's out there in the paddock.

  97. You've got to go and chase it down

  98. and kill it and slaughter it

  99. and do all that sort of stuff.

  100. It takes a while.

  101. So what they used to do

  102. was they put out the first invitation first.

  103. So out you go, invitation to everyone.

  104. We're going to have this great party,

  105. a big banquet.

  106. This is not necessarily just two hours' worth of,

  107. you know, dinner time.

  108. This could go on for days and weeks.

  109. Out goes the first invitation.

  110. People go, yeah, I'll be there.

  111. Sounds like a great idea.

  112. Then the servant gets and does all the preparation.

  113. He slaughters the cows,

  114. picks the carrots,

  115. barbecues the meat,

  116. puts the drinks with the sterly straws in them,

  117. all set aside.

  118. Desserts are cooling in the fridge.

  119. It's ready to go.

  120. Goes around, brings in the party goers,

  121. and what he discovers is

  122. those who said yes to start with

  123. are now saying no.

  124. And what he gets faced with

  125. is a bunch of excuses.

  126. Verse 18,

  127. I have just bought a field

  128. and I must go and see it.

  129. What an idiot.

  130. He's just bought a field

  131. and now he must go and see it.

  132. He's just bought himself a farm, right?

  133. He's just bought himself a business,

  134. hasn't looked over the books,

  135. hasn't seen whether or not

  136. the paddock actually exists or not,

  137. but I've got to go and see it now.

  138. I can't come to your party.

  139. I can't wait, you know,

  140. a couple of days or anything.

  141. I've got to go and see it now

  142. because I might not be there in the morning.

  143. Verse 19,

  144. I've just bought five yoke of oxen

  145. and I'm on my way to try them out.

  146. This guy has just bought a secondhand tractor,

  147. hasn't even seen it,

  148. doesn't even know if it's got all of its wheels

  149. attached to it,

  150. whether there's a motor there,

  151. a transmitter,

  152. got no idea whatsoever.

  153. He's bought it

  154. and he's got to go and try them out now

  155. when the party's on.

  156. He can't wait a couple of days

  157. because they might get lonely tonight.

  158. Number three,

  159. verse 20,

  160. I've just got married so I can't come.

  161. Well, that's pretty self-explanatory.

  162. You know,

  163. you get married,

  164. you don't go to parties anymore,

  165. you know,

  166. got other things on your mind,

  167. don't go and worry about that.

  168. You see,

  169. what it's saying here is

  170. all these people who were initially invited

  171. have changed their mind.

  172. They signed up to it,

  173. they thought it was a good idea

  174. and then when push comes to shove,

  175. don't want to be part of the banquet.

  176. And what Jesus is faced with here,

  177. what he says is,

  178. is that they are just excuses.

  179. And in actual fact,

  180. Jesus is saying these excuses

  181. are both laughable and pathetic.

  182. They are laughable and pathetic,

  183. even good things like buying a field

  184. and buying a bunch of cows

  185. and getting married,

  186. even good things.

  187. When it comes up against

  188. the greatest thing of all,

  189. they can be but distractions

  190. from the greatest and the best thing,

  191. an invitation to party with God for eternity.

  192. So he wants to make it clear

  193. that every excuse that we make

  194. to put off an invitation

  195. of a relationship with the God of this universe

  196. is pathetic,

  197. it's laughable.

  198. There is nothing more important

  199. for yesterday,

  200. today and always

  201. than to know the one who gives us life,

  202. who has control of eternity

  203. in the palm of his hand.

  204. Anything that puts that relationship

  205. to one side

  206. and makes it less important,

  207. the number one priority

  208. is a pathetic excuse.

  209. And I think we've been challenged

  210. about this as we've journeyed

  211. with Jesus to Jerusalem,

  212. haven't we,

  213. over the last few weeks?

  214. When Jesus describes

  215. about what it means

  216. to be his disciple,

  217. what does it mean

  218. to walk with Jesus

  219. along this road to Jerusalem,

  220. into Jerusalem,

  221. to pick up our cross,

  222. to walk outside of Jerusalem,

  223. to die with Jesus

  224. out there on the place

  225. of the skull?

  226. And how often

  227. do we make excuses?

  228. What this passage is saying

  229. and the next one,

  230. this whole collective passage

  231. is saying here,

  232. which is the whole point

  233. of this travel narrative,

  234. do we actually trust Jesus

  235. with our life?

  236. Do we really trust Jesus

  237. with our life?

  238. Jesus is not asking us here,

  239. do we go to church,

  240. we part of a Bible study group,

  241. do I arrange the flowers

  242. at church,

  243. do I,

  244. he's asking,

  245. do I actually trust him

  246. with my life?

  247. Or am I still making excuses?

  248. I've come up with all sorts

  249. of excuses over the years,

  250. so I've been faced

  251. with all sorts of excuses,

  252. I've made excuses myself.

  253. One of the classic ones

  254. is I'm too smart

  255. to be a Christian.

  256. A Christian is just made up

  257. for dumb people

  258. who need some form of crutch,

  259. but I'm too smart.

  260. I've heard that one,

  261. I've heard it,

  262. the most clearest excuse

  263. in that regard

  264. that I heard

  265. came from a 16 year old

  266. and it was in the middle

  267. of a scripture class,

  268. this kid said to me,

  269. the Bible's full of mistakes

  270. and Christianity's all flawed.

  271. And, you know,

  272. very authoritatively said that

  273. and I said,

  274. so tell me where?

  275. He goes,

  276. well,

  277. you haven't got a Bible.

  278. Unfortunately,

  279. I had my big Bible bashing Bible

  280. at the time

  281. and I threw my Bible,

  282. which just landed perfectly

  283. on his desk

  284. and slid into his lap

  285. and it was just,

  286. you know,

  287. just a great effect.

  288. And I said,

  289. so show us where the,

  290. you know,

  291. show us where the mistakes

  292. all are.

  293. And he goes,

  294. well,

  295. I don't know exactly

  296. where they are,

  297. I've just heard

  298. it's full of mistakes.

  299. Well,

  300. who told you?

  301. Well,

  302. I don't know where

  303. I heard it from.

  304. I've heard it from someone.

  305. I said,

  306. is the person reliable?

  307. I don't know,

  308. I don't know who it was.

  309. And I said,

  310. so in other words,

  311. you don't really know,

  312. do you?

  313. And he goes,

  314. no,

  315. you're right,

  316. I don't really know.

  317. Or the other one I've heard is,

  318. I'm too good looking

  319. and too cool to be Christian.

  320. Like being a Christian

  321. is going to spoil my image

  322. because clearly Christians

  323. are the people

  324. who tuck their ciglet

  325. inside their undies

  326. and we're the guys

  327. who wear the sandals

  328. on outside of our socks

  329. and dagginess

  330. has nothing to do

  331. with Christianity.

  332. It's in your jeans,

  333. not in the type you wear

  334. but in your mum and dad

  335. so blame them for that.

  336. Or I'm too involved,

  337. I'm too involved

  338. in the opposite sex

  339. or with family

  340. or friends,

  341. you know,

  342. what would those people think?

  343. I'm too involved

  344. with all these other relationships

  345. to actually give

  346. great consideration

  347. to the best relationship

  348. at all,

  349. a relationship

  350. with a guy

  351. in this universe

  352. or I'm just too busy.

  353. I'm too busy with my work,

  354. I'm too busy with my hobbies,

  355. I'm too busy with my clubs,

  356. I'm too busy with my study,

  357. I'm just too busy

  358. with life itself

  359. to give a thought

  360. for the one

  361. who gives me life itself.

  362. How do your excuses stack up?

  363. In Jesus' story,

  364. and this is,

  365. you've got to read this one here,

  366. not one of those

  367. who are invited to the banquet

  368. got a taste of the banquet.

  369. Verse 24,

  370. I tell you,

  371. not one of those men

  372. who are invited

  373. will get a taste

  374. of my banquet.

  375. Not one.

  376. What Jesus is saying

  377. is if we continue

  378. to reject the invitation

  379. of our relationship

  380. with him,

  381. if we continue

  382. to make our excuses,

  383. if we continue

  384. not to trust in Jesus,

  385. then he will end up

  386. treating us

  387. for eternity

  388. the way

  389. that we have treated him

  390. in the short span

  391. of our lifetime.

  392. Away from me,

  393. I never knew you.

  394. Away from me.

  395. What Jesus wants

  396. to make very clear

  397. for us here

  398. is that it is

  399. the most important decision.

  400. It's what we do with Jesus.

  401. It's the most important decision

  402. in our life

  403. and that is why

  404. Jesus wants us

  405. to be so,

  406. so clear

  407. about what we are doing.

  408. So clear

  409. about what we are doing

  410. when we sign on

  411. to follow Jesus.

  412. I want to say

  413. that as well

  414. by way of encouragement,

  415. I have been amazed

  416. recently,

  417. the last two weeks

  418. have been the most

  419. difficult ministry years

  420. of my,

  421. ministry weeks

  422. of my life

  423. and yet

  424. in amongst that difficulty

  425. I have been rejoicing

  426. consistently

  427. of those

  428. who have been coming

  429. to Christ

  430. in our midst.

  431. God has been good.

  432. God has been good.

  433. The evil one

  434. would want to distract us

  435. from the main game

  436. and Jesus keeps

  437. encouraging us

  438. with those

  439. who have come

  440. to Christ.

  441. Praise God.

  442. God has been good.

  443. But he wants to make

  444. us very,

  445. very clear

  446. what we are signing

  447. on for here

  448. as his people.

  449. Jesus says

  450. if you want to follow him

  451. it's going to be tough.

  452. It's going to be tough

  453. because you die to yourself

  454. and you rise to me.

  455. It's going to be tough

  456. because you take up

  457. your cross

  458. and you follow me.

  459. It's going to be tough

  460. following me

  461. on this road

  462. to Jerusalem

  463. and outside of Jerusalem

  464. to the place

  465. of the skull

  466. so you better get ready

  467. for it.

  468. You better get ready

  469. for it.

  470. He says

  471. you've got to realise

  472. that you are sheep

  473. amongst ravenous wolves.

  474. You've got to be ready

  475. for it

  476. because I'm getting you

  477. to carry your cross

  478. as well

  479. as much as I'm carrying mine

  480. and you need to count

  481. the cost.

  482. It's no good

  483. RSVPing for heaven

  484. signing up

  485. for a gentle Jesus

  486. meek and mild

  487. and then realising

  488. that Jesus

  489. is more than meek

  490. and mild.

  491. Jesus is a king

  492. who demands

  493. my allegiance

  494. and then realising

  495. you've signed up

  496. and you've made a mistake.

  497. And so Jesus

  498. uses two illustrations

  499. to make the point.

  500. He says

  501. you don't go

  502. building a building

  503. if you haven't got

  504. the money

  505. to finish the job.

  506. You look like an idiot.

  507. You don't just

  508. get the foundations

  509. and you go

  510. okay well

  511. where's the rest

  512. of it going

  513. to come from now?

  514. And he says

  515. you don't go

  516. picking a fight

  517. with a guy

  518. who's bigger than you

  519. if you're going

  520. to lose.

  521. You know

  522. I don't go

  523. walking around

  524. picking fights

  525. with you know

  526. two foot tall

  527. sorry

  528. two meter tall

  529. two foot tall guys

  530. I'll pick fights

  531. with those guys

  532. two

  533. you know

  534. two meter tall

  535. bodybuilders

  536. you don't pick

  537. fights with those guys.

  538. In other words

  539. he says

  540. think about

  541. what you're committing

  542. to

  543. and this is

  544. a significant

  545. warning for us

  546. I've said this

  547. before

  548. from the pulpit

  549. that it's easier

  550. for us to be part

  551. of the Anglican Church

  552. of Australia

  553. than it is to be part

  554. of the kingdom

  555. of God.

  556. That what Jesus

  557. demands in terms

  558. of discipleship

  559. is not what

  560. is demanded

  561. in terms of

  562. the Anglican Church

  563. of Australia.

  564. It is much

  565. harder

  566. to be part

  567. of the kingdom

  568. of God

  569. than it is to be part

  570. of Sir Paul's

  571. Chatswood.

  572. And let's be

  573. frank about this

  574. even the rich

  575. young ruler

  576. would be welcomed

  577. amongst us.

  578. He would be

  579. included

  580. given a position

  581. of leadership

  582. and frankly

  583. right now

  584. the Sydney

  585. Diocese

  586. could do

  587. with his money.

  588. And he even

  589. came running

  590. up to Jesus

  591. with the all-important

  592. question

  593. what must I do

  594. to inherit

  595. eternal life?

  596. If he came up

  597. to me

  598. and said that

  599. it would be

  600. vastly different

  601. than what happened

  602. when he said

  603. it to Jesus.

  604. He walked away

  605. sad

  606. because he wasn't

  607. prepared

  608. to trust

  609. Jesus.

  610. He wasn't

  611. prepared for

  612. Jesus to be

  613. number one

  614. he trusted

  615. his money

  616. more.

  617. If he ran

  618. up to me

  619. I would have

  620. had him

  621. praying the

  622. sinner's prayer

  623. before he

  624. caught his breath

  625. and I would have

  626. had him baptised

  627. before he filled

  628. out a follow-up

  629. card.

  630. Jesus was a

  631. magnet to

  632. people like

  633. him

  634. people who

  635. want Jesus

  636. for all that

  637. they could get

  638. out of him

  639. but not prepared

  640. to give Jesus

  641. everything.

  642. Verse 25

  643. tells us

  644. that there

  645. are a great

  646. number of

  647. people who

  648. were travelling

  649. along the

  650. road with

  651. Jesus

  652. but he was

  653. never fooled

  654. by the

  655. crowds.

  656. Jesus always

  657. made a distinction

  658. between the

  659. crowds and

  660. his disciples.

  661. He was never

  662. fooled by the

  663. crowds.

  664. Just because

  665. they were there

  666. he didn't think

  667. for a moment

  668. that they

  669. were his

  670. true

  671. disciples

  672. and so

  673. he told

  674. them what

  675. it meant

  676. to be

  677. his

  678. disciple.

  679. And so

  680. here's the

  681. question for

  682. you.

  683. Do you

  684. want to be

  685. a disciple

  686. of Jesus?

  687. Do you

  688. want to be

  689. a true

  690. disciple of

  691. Jesus?

  692. Do you

  693. want to be

  694. at his

  695. banquet table

  696. whatever that

  697. is for all

  698. eternity in

  699. heaven?

  700. Do you

  701. want to be

  702. there in

  703. the end?

  704. Jesus?

  705. Well then

  706. you need to

  707. do this.

  708. You need to

  709. put your

  710. hands up

  711. like this.

  712. Both of

  713. your hands.

  714. Come on.

  715. I'm not

  716. going to be

  717. the only

  718. idiot here.

  719. Everyone's

  720. got to do

  721. this.

  722. And you

  723. need to

  724. get behind

  725. your ears

  726. and you

  727. need to

  728. do this.

  729. Because

  730. Jesus says

  731. this in

  732. verse 35

  733. he who has

  734. ears to

  735. hear let

  736. him hear.

  737. You want

  738. to be my

  739. disciple?

  740. Listen up.

  741. Okay?

  742. You don't

  743. need to keep

  744. doing that.

  745. Listen up.

  746. Jesus says

  747. three things

  748. in this

  749. passage.

  750. What it

  751. means to

  752. be his

  753. true

  754. disciple.

  755. Jesus said

  756. first of

  757. all you

  758. cannot be

  759. my

  760. disciple

  761. if you

  762. love

  763. other

  764. people

  765. more

  766. than

  767. you

  768. love

  769. Jesus.

  770. Have

  771. a look

  772. at verse

  773. 26.

  774. If anyone

  775. comes to

  776. me and

  777. does not

  778. hate his

  779. father and

  780. mother,

  781. his wife

  782. and

  783. children,

  784. his brothers

  785. and sisters,

  786. even his

  787. own life,

  788. he cannot

  789. be my

  790. disciple.

  791. Now if

  792. you had

  793. an argument

  794. as a

  795. family on

  796. the way

  797. here today

  798. you'd

  799. think these

  800. are great

  801. words but

  802. that's not

  803. quite what

  804. Jesus is

  805. saying.

  806. The point

  807. is that

  808. the relationship

  809. that Jesus

  810. calls us

  811. to is an

  812. exclusive

  813. relationship.

  814. Jesus says

  815. the first

  816. thing that

  817. has to

  818. happen if

  819. you're going

  820. to be

  821. his disciple

  822. there is

  823. no more

  824. important

  825. relationship

  826. than your

  827. relationship

  828. with Jesus

  829. and as

  830. C.S.

  831. Lewis says

  832. when you

  833. put the

  834. first things

  835. first everything

  836. else doesn't

  837. become second

  838. it actually

  839. becomes

  840. first.

  841. when God

  842. is first

  843. you will

  844. love your

  845. wife,

  846. your husband,

  847. your children,

  848. your friends,

  849. your neighbour

  850. like you

  851. will not

  852. love them

  853. now.

  854. What Jesus

  855. is saying

  856. is that there

  857. is no

  858. competitors

  859. for this

  860. relationship.

  861. He says

  862. it won't

  863. be our

  864. parents,

  865. it won't

  866. be our

  867. wives,

  868. our husbands,

  869. our brothers,

  870. our sister,

  871. our children,

  872. our boyfriend,

  873. our girlfriend,

  874. our best

  875. friend,

  876. our work

  877. colleagues,

  878. it won't

  879. even be

  880. ourselves.

  881. He says

  882. there,

  883. I won't

  884. even love

  885. myself.

  886. I won't

  887. live for

  888. my security,

  889. for my ease,

  890. for my comfort,

  891. my pleasure.

  892. Nobody

  893. will be

  894. competing

  895. with Jesus

  896. for our

  897. love,

  898. our affection,

  899. our allegiance.

  900. Jesus

  901. will be the

  902. one who

  903. sets the

  904. agenda for

  905. my life.

  906. He'll be

  907. the one

  908. who I

  909. love,

  910. who I

  911. will serve

  912. like no

  913. other.

  914. We will

  915. do what

  916. Jesus wants

  917. us to do

  918. before what

  919. our friends

  920. want us

  921. to do,

  922. even before

  923. what my

  924. boss wants

  925. me to

  926. do.

  927. It means

  928. when Jesus

  929. speaks to

  930. us through

  931. his word,

  932. as our

  933. dearly loved

  934. friend,

  935. as our

  936. king,

  937. we will

  938. listen and

  939. we will

  940. obey.

  941. We will

  942. listen and

  943. we will

  944. obey.

  945. Do you

  946. trust Jesus

  947. enough to

  948. do that?

  949. Do you

  950. trust him

  951. enough to

  952. do that?

  953. Jesus

  954. also said

  955. that you

  956. cannot be

  957. his

  958. disciples.

  959. Number

  960. two,

  961. if we

  962. are

  963. people

  964. who

  965. love

  966. safety

  967. more

  968. than we

  969. love

  970. Jesus.

  971. Verse

  972. 27,

  973. anyone

  974. who does

  975. not carry

  976. his cross

  977. and follow

  978. me

  979. cannot be

  980. my

  981. disciple.

  982. Amazing

  983. verse.

  984. Jesus

  985. calls us

  986. into a

  987. relationship

  988. that is

  989. actually

  990. worth

  991. dying

  992. for.

  993. He

  994. calls us

  995. into a

  996. relationship

  997. that is

  998. actually

  999. worth

  1000. dying

  1001. for

  1002. and

  1003. that

  1004. means

  1005. it's

  1006. everything

  1007. to live

  1008. for.

  1009. When

  1010. something

  1011. is worth

  1012. dying

  1013. for,

  1014. it is

  1015. everything

  1016. to live

  1017. for.

  1018. You

  1019. see,

  1020. the decision

  1021. is now,

  1022. tomorrow,

  1023. the day

  1024. after,

  1025. the next

  1026. day,

  1027. take up

  1028. my cross

  1029. and follow

  1030. Christ.

  1031. Even if it

  1032. costs me

  1033. my friends,

  1034. it costs

  1035. me money,

  1036. people think

  1037. I'm an

  1038. idiot,

  1039. even if it

  1040. costs me

  1041. my life,

  1042. no matter

  1043. what,

  1044. I'm going

  1045. to follow

  1046. Jesus.

  1047. Do you

  1048. trust

  1049. Jesus

  1050. enough

  1051. to do

  1052. that?

  1053. Third

  1054. thing,

  1055. Jesus

  1056. also said

  1057. that you

  1058. cannot be

  1059. my

  1060. disciple

  1061. if you're

  1062. a person

  1063. who loves

  1064. things

  1065. more than

  1066. you love

  1067. Jesus.

  1068. Have a

  1069. look,

  1070. verse 33,

  1071. in the

  1072. same way,

  1073. any of

  1074. you who

  1075. does not

  1076. give up

  1077. everything

  1078. he has

  1079. cannot be

  1080. my

  1081. disciple.

  1082. And

  1083. I've

  1084. spoken

  1085. on this

  1086. one a

  1087. number

  1088. of times

  1089. lately,

  1090. and I'm

  1091. going to

  1092. consistently

  1093. do it,

  1094. because

  1095. the world

  1096. in which

  1097. we live

  1098. wants us

  1099. to love

  1100. things.

  1101. You

  1102. turn on

  1103. the TV

  1104. and every

  1105. ad is

  1106. telling

  1107. you that

  1108. your life

  1109. is

  1110. meaningless

  1111. unless

  1112. you buy

  1113. this,

  1114. fill in

  1115. the blank,

  1116. whatever the

  1117. product is.

  1118. You know,

  1119. a bowling

  1120. ball,

  1121. a backing

  1122. clinic can

  1123. lift a

  1124. bowling

  1125. ball,

  1126. I mean,

  1127. that's the

  1128. meaning of

  1129. life.

  1130. You know,

  1131. everything.

  1132. And what

  1133. Jesus is

  1134. saying here

  1135. is that

  1136. he is the

  1137. one who

  1138. determines

  1139. our future,

  1140. our goals,

  1141. our plans,

  1142. our security,

  1143. and even

  1144. our spending.

  1145. Do you

  1146. trust

  1147. Jesus

  1148. enough to

  1149. do that?

  1150. do you

  1151. love

  1152. Jesus

  1153. more than

  1154. anything

  1155. or anyone

  1156. else?

  1157. I'm not

  1158. asking you

  1159. are you

  1160. a member

  1161. of the

  1162. Anglican

  1163. Church?

  1164. I'm not

  1165. asking you

  1166. whether you

  1167. go to

  1168. Bible

  1169. study.

  1170. I'm not

  1171. asking you

  1172. whether or

  1173. not you

  1174. arrange the

  1175. flowers at

  1176. church.

  1177. I'm asking

  1178. you,

  1179. do you

  1180. trust

  1181. Jesus

  1182. more than

  1183. anything?

  1184. Maybe you

  1185. know the

  1186. Christian message

  1187. well.

  1188. You pray

  1189. regularly,

  1190. you can

  1191. memorize

  1192. important

  1193. Bible

  1194. verses

  1195. and it

  1196. hasn't

  1197. changed

  1198. your

  1199. priorities.

  1200. It has

  1201. an impact

  1202. on the

  1203. way you

  1204. treat

  1205. people,

  1206. even the

  1207. way that

  1208. you treat

  1209. God.

  1210. Or even

  1211. the way

  1212. that you

  1213. day by

  1214. day go

  1215. about your

  1216. business and

  1217. even plan

  1218. your life.

  1219. How many

  1220. of us

  1221. here

  1222. prayerfully

  1223. considered

  1224. our last

  1225. purchase?

  1226. Okay,

  1227. that might

  1228. be a bit

  1229. harsh.

  1230. How many

  1231. of us

  1232. here

  1233. prayerfully

  1234. considered

  1235. our last

  1236. holiday?

  1237. How many

  1238. prayerfully

  1239. considered a

  1240. career change?

  1241. Because

  1242. all of

  1243. those

  1244. decisions,

  1245. I

  1246. significantly

  1247. consider

  1248. and take

  1249. into

  1250. consideration

  1251. the thoughts

  1252. of and the

  1253. words and

  1254. wisdom of my

  1255. lovely,

  1256. dearest

  1257. wife,

  1258. Natalie,

  1259. but if I

  1260. considered

  1261. Jesus to

  1262. be the

  1263. most

  1264. important,

  1265. wouldn't I

  1266. be prayerfully

  1267. considering those

  1268. decisions with

  1269. him as well?

  1270. Wouldn't he

  1271. have something

  1272. to say about

  1273. my spending,

  1274. my leisure,

  1275. my time?

  1276. how many

  1277. people have

  1278. got an

  1279. ache in

  1280. their gut

  1281. right now?

  1282. When you

  1283. realise what

  1284. Jesus is

  1285. calling us

  1286. to as we

  1287. walk along

  1288. that road of

  1289. discipleship to

  1290. Jerusalem with

  1291. him.

  1292. Jesus

  1293. wasn't

  1294. fooled by the

  1295. crowd who

  1296. followed him

  1297. around,

  1298. who only

  1299. followed him

  1300. because of

  1301. what they

  1302. could get

  1303. out of

  1304. him.

  1305. He wasn't

  1306. fooled then

  1307. and he

  1308. certainly isn't

  1309. fooled now.

  1310. What I'm

  1311. calling us

  1312. to do here

  1313. is the

  1314. very thing

  1315. that Jesus

  1316. called his

  1317. disciples to

  1318. do 2,000

  1319. years ago in

  1320. clearing up

  1321. their misconceptions

  1322. of what it

  1323. meant to be

  1324. his disciple.

  1325. He called

  1326. them to a

  1327. life of

  1328. radical

  1329. discipleship.

  1330. Actually,

  1331. let me

  1332. retract that.

  1333. No,

  1334. he didn't.

  1335. He called

  1336. them to a

  1337. life of

  1338. following him,

  1339. the radical

  1340. king.

  1341. That's the

  1342. key.

  1343. The key

  1344. is not

  1345. our life,

  1346. but the

  1347. king who

  1348. we follow,

  1349. the radical

  1350. king.

  1351. And what

  1352. the radical

  1353. king offers

  1354. us,

  1355. what the

  1356. radical king

  1357. offers us

  1358. is an

  1359. eternal

  1360. banquet with

  1361. him,

  1362. the greatest

  1363. thing you

  1364. could ever

  1365. possibly have

  1366. or imagine,

  1367. and he

  1368. says,

  1369. follow me.

  1370. Follow me

  1371. all the way

  1372. there,

  1373. me the

  1374. radical

  1375. king.

  1376. And when

  1377. you stuff

  1378. it up,

  1379. as you

  1380. will,

  1381. keep looking

  1382. to me,

  1383. the radical

  1384. substitute

  1385. king who

  1386. sacrificed in

  1387. your behalf

  1388. because you

  1389. failed to

  1390. follow me,

  1391. the pace

  1392. setter.

  1393. So let us

  1394. be a people

  1395. who in

  1396. the power

  1397. and the

  1398. comfort of

  1399. the gospel,

  1400. in the

  1401. power of

  1402. the indwelling

  1403. spirit,

  1404. with the

  1405. great king

  1406. Jesus before

  1407. us,

  1408. decide today,

  1409. tomorrow,

  1410. the next

  1411. day,

  1412. 10 years

  1413. time,

  1414. 30 years

  1415. time,

  1416. to get on

  1417. that road,

  1418. to stay on

  1419. that road to

  1420. Jerusalem,

  1421. to get to

  1422. Jerusalem,

  1423. to pick up

  1424. our cross,

  1425. and to walk

  1426. with him to

  1427. the place of

  1428. the skull,

  1429. and there with

  1430. him die to

  1431. the old life,

  1432. and with him

  1433. rise to a

  1434. new life.

  1435. Amen.
