  1. Let's pray.

  2. Gracious God, as we come to your word now,

  3. we ask that we might be challenged again

  4. as we walk this road with Jesus to Jerusalem.

  5. Father, we pray that you might clear up misconceptions

  6. that we have of what it means to be your disciple.

  7. And Lord, if we are looking to anything else but Jesus

  8. for our justification, then Lord,

  9. help us to clearly see that this morning,

  10. that we might trust in him and him alone.

  11. And we ask it for your sake. Amen.

  12. I heard the story of a young lad who mounted a campaign

  13. just before Christmas in order to secure a brand new bike

  14. at Christmastime.

  15. And he badgered his parents to the point where one day

  16. his mother said to him, confusing Jesus with Santa,

  17. well, why don't you go and write a letter to Jesus

  18. and tell him that you deserve this bike?

  19. And so the young lad trudged off upstairs,

  20. started to write the letter, dear Jesus,

  21. I've been good all year.

  22. And he thought to himself, no, that's not really true.

  23. He screwed up the piece of paper and threw it away

  24. and started again, dear Jesus,

  25. I've been good for the last six months.

  26. And he thought, well, that's not really true either.

  27. I mean, at the very least, this guy's a realist.

  28. He started again, dear Jesus, I've been good all week.

  29. Frustrated, he just screwed the paper up and threw it away.

  30. He knew that wasn't true.

  31. So in his frustration, he walked downstairs,

  32. walked to the mantelpiece where the nativity scene was,

  33. picked up Mary, walked back upstairs,

  34. plonked it on his desk.

  35. Dear Jesus, if you ever want to see your mother again,

  36. he had a few things worked out about Jesus.

  37. He knew that Mary was Jesus' mother.

  38. That's a good start.

  39. But in terms of how to relate to God,

  40. it was kind of more like a terrorist.

  41. He was trying to force God's hand.

  42. And that's the story we have here.

  43. The Pharisee and the tax collector

  44. helps us in our confusion about how to relate to God.

  45. Although we read a large chunk there of the narrative,

  46. it's all kind of interconnected.

  47. But I just want to hone in, particularly in the Pharisee and the tax collector.

  48. We see the Pharisee and the tax collector being spelled out for us

  49. in the story of the young children

  50. and then following on with the rich young ruler.

  51. They are, if you like, the Pharisee and the tax collectors

  52. in this story as well.

  53. And so let's just hone in on these two stark characters,

  54. comic characters.

  55. The issue that Jesus wants to address here is very clear for us.

  56. In verse 9, it says,

  57. To some who were confident of their own righteousness

  58. and looked down on everybody else,

  59. Jesus told this parable.

  60. To some who were confident of their own righteousness

  61. and looked down on everyone else,

  62. Jesus told this parable.

  63. But it's not just looking down on other people.

  64. He's not just saying,

  65. Hey, it's just not a kind thing to do.

  66. Look down on other people.

  67. He spills out quite clearly

  68. that the core issue here

  69. is a core issue of our standing before God.

  70. Verse 14,

  71. I tell you that this man,

  72. rather than the other,

  73. went home justified before God.

  74. That's the core issue.

  75. The core issue is,

  76. Do I trust in myself

  77. or do I trust in Jesus

  78. in order to be right with God?

  79. That's the issue Jesus wants to address here.

  80. How to be right with God.

  81. This story is all about people

  82. who are self-confident, self-righteous,

  83. and somehow think that that makes them okay with God.

  84. Jesus,

  85. and this is the clutcher for us,

  86. Jesus was particularly talking

  87. to people who make some sort of attempt at religion.

  88. You could just imagine Jesus

  89. eyeballing the Pharisees at this point

  90. and his disciples at this point

  91. because it was specifically those guys

  92. who he was addressing.

  93. You could say that Jesus

  94. is talking to people like us

  95. gathered here right now.

  96. And his message for us is very clear.

  97. God is not pleased by self-confidence

  98. or self-righteousness.

  99. He is only pleased with people

  100. who come to him

  101. for their righteousness.

  102. So let's have a look at it.

  103. We know from verse 10

  104. that there are two men

  105. who go up to the temple to pray,

  106. but in verse 14,

  107. it says that only one of them

  108. goes home okay with God.

  109. Only one of them

  110. goes home as a friend of God.

  111. It's kind of like,

  112. if you ever watch the movie

  113. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,

  114. there is this post-war situation,

  115. and if two people get into a bit of biff,

  116. they would go into the Thunderdome

  117. and sort it out,

  118. and when they go into the Thunderdome

  119. and sort it out,

  120. it was like to the death,

  121. that is,

  122. this chant would go up,

  123. two men enter,

  124. one man leaves,

  125. two men enter,

  126. one man leaves.

  127. And you kind of get that feeling

  128. as these two men go into the temple,

  129. you know that as Jesus' story goes,

  130. only one of these guys

  131. is going to come out

  132. having any form of meaningful relationship

  133. with God.

  134. We are told that one of them

  135. is a tax collector,

  136. the other is a Pharisee,

  137. and again,

  138. I know I've said this before,

  139. we need to come back to it,

  140. we are in danger

  141. of mucking it up right from the start

  142. because we are familiar

  143. with the Bible,

  144. and we automatically,

  145. as Christian people,

  146. go boo his to the Pharisees

  147. because we know that Jesus,

  148. you know,

  149. kicked the Pharisees

  150. in the guts all the time.

  151. We know the Pharisees

  152. are the bad guys,

  153. they're the ones

  154. that Jesus consistently hammers,

  155. and so we need to try

  156. and hear this story

  157. as it would have been

  158. for first century Palestine,

  159. in there,

  160. for Jesus' friends,

  161. for Peter, James and John

  162. and the rest of the boys,

  163. they would have known

  164. that the tax collector

  165. was the scum,

  166. they knew that,

  167. the tax collector

  168. was the guy

  169. who wore the black hat,

  170. he was the guy

  171. who rode around

  172. on the mean looking camel,

  173. he was the one

  174. that no one really liked

  175. very much,

  176. he was the low life

  177. of first century Palestine,

  178. he was filth,

  179. he was traitor,

  180. they sold out God

  181. for money,

  182. they were not welcomed

  183. in a place of worship,

  184. he was scum,

  185. the Pharisee,

  186. on the other hand,

  187. was deeply,

  188. deeply respected,

  189. it's hard to imagine

  190. how deeply respected

  191. a Pharisee was

  192. in first century Palestine,

  193. they were the guys

  194. who wore the white hats,

  195. right,

  196. they wore the respectable camels,

  197. you know,

  198. the nice ones

  199. with the smile

  200. and the speed limited camels,

  201. they were the kind of,

  202. they were the kind of

  203. the Camry drivers

  204. of first century Palestine,

  205. they were not men

  206. who made their living

  207. out of religion,

  208. they were regular

  209. church attendees

  210. who were deeply,

  211. deeply serious

  212. and set the pace

  213. for everyone else,

  214. in Jesus' day

  215. the people would go

  216. boo his scumbag

  217. tax collector

  218. but the Pharisee

  219. definitely not,

  220. the Pharisee

  221. is the guy

  222. who is dead

  223. earnest about God,

  224. a valued member

  225. of society

  226. and a very valued

  227. member

  228. of the community

  229. of God's people,

  230. well that's the

  231. two extraordinary men,

  232. now let's look

  233. at their two

  234. extraordinary prayers

  235. because their prayers

  236. reveal what their heart

  237. is like,

  238. let's look at

  239. the Pharisee's prayers,

  240. now I occasionally,

  241. I'll let you in

  242. a bit of my psyche here,

  243. occasionally enjoy

  244. the read of the

  245. personal ads of a paper,

  246. you know,

  247. I don't know if you've

  248. ever done that before

  249. but I can't ever

  250. imagine what it

  251. would mean for someone

  252. to actually

  253. advertise

  254. their finer points

  255. and ask for someone

  256. to love them

  257. kind of thing,

  258. I find that kind of

  259. odd

  260. and it must be

  261. kind of frustrating

  262. for them

  263. example,

  264. I read this one,

  265. 30 year old,

  266. 6 foot tall,

  267. brown hair,

  268. green eyes,

  269. 6 lady,

  270. 21 to 28 year old

  271. for friendship

  272. and or relationship

  273. and it's like,

  274. haven't you got

  275. anything else to offer?

  276. He's 30 year old,

  277. 6 foot tall,

  278. brown hair,

  279. green eyes,

  280. well that just

  281. pretty much opens it up,

  282. that's him putting

  283. his good foot forward,

  284. that's him advertising

  285. his higher points,

  286. now I've got to

  287. understand here

  288. that I've never read

  289. a personal ad

  290. where someone

  291. highlights

  292. their negative points,

  293. you know,

  294. I like to sleep in,

  295. I don't have a job,

  296. looking for a house

  297. for my greyhounds,

  298. you know,

  299. that's,

  300. you know,

  301. like I've never

  302. ever seen that,

  303. looking for someone

  304. to cook and clean

  305. for me,

  306. is there anyone

  307. out there

  308. who's willing

  309. to take on this gig?

  310. I've never seen that,

  311. that is because

  312. our natural human

  313. tendency is to put

  314. our best foot forward,

  315. we always put

  316. our best foot forward,

  317. we promote ourselves

  318. and it's no different

  319. when it comes

  320. to our relationship

  321. with God,

  322. our nature is to

  323. outline the wonderful

  324. things that we are

  325. or that we do

  326. and we don't mention

  327. the things that we do

  328. too wrong,

  329. too often,

  330. unless we are

  331. absolutely confronted

  332. with it and have to,

  333. we even go to the

  334. point of justifying

  335. our wrongdoing

  336. by giving them

  337. different kind of names

  338. which kind of lessen

  339. the sin of it,

  340. so I don't evade tax,

  341. I just minimise tax,

  342. I don't lie,

  343. I just,

  344. you know,

  345. occasional white lie,

  346. I don't gossip,

  347. I share prayer points,

  348. I don't ridicule people

  349. because I was just

  350. kind of joking

  351. and I'm not committing

  352. adultery,

  353. I'm having an affair

  354. or a midlife crisis,

  355. I didn't steal

  356. the stamps from work,

  357. I borrowed the stamps

  358. from work

  359. and by the time

  360. that we've justified

  361. our position,

  362. we're kind of like,

  363. actually,

  364. I'm not that bad

  365. after all,

  366. but God knows

  367. our hearts

  368. and so the Pharisee

  369. prays like this

  370. in verse 11,

  371. God,

  372. I thank you

  373. that I'm not like

  374. other men,

  375. robbers,

  376. evildoers,

  377. adulterers,

  378. or even like that

  379. tax collector

  380. over there,

  381. I fast twice a week

  382. and give a tenth

  383. of all that I get.

  384. Now,

  385. it is so easy

  386. to send this guy up

  387. because I think

  388. that's exactly

  389. what Jesus is doing

  390. here.

  391. Hey God,

  392. I am

  393. just ever

  394. so terribly

  395. marvelous,

  396. God.

  397. But,

  398. you know,

  399. the awful thing

  400. about it,

  401. the way he does it,

  402. is he spiritualizes it.

  403. Thank you,

  404. God.

  405. Thank you,

  406. God,

  407. that you've made

  408. a difference

  409. in my life.

  410. Thank you,

  411. God,

  412. that you've changed me.

  413. Thank you,

  414. God,

  415. that I'm not like

  416. other people.

  417. Thank you,

  418. God,

  419. that I'm not like

  420. that scumbag

  421. tax collector

  422. sitting over there.

  423. He spiritualizes it,

  424. thanks God

  425. for it

  426. because he

  427. even recognizes

  428. that God

  429. has made a change

  430. in his life.

  431. He then goes on,

  432. explains how he's

  433. different from other people.

  434. He fasts twice a week,

  435. he says.

  436. That is,

  437. he goes without food

  438. twice a week.

  439. Normal Jewish practice

  440. by this time

  441. was that you did it

  442. once or twice a year

  443. and occasionally

  444. as you felt like it.

  445. And this guy

  446. does it twice a week.

  447. He is

  448. really serious

  449. about his relationship

  450. with God.

  451. But not just that.

  452. It says here

  453. he gives a tenth

  454. of all that I get.

  455. I give a tenth

  456. of it all.

  457. He

  458. tithes

  459. his herb garden.

  460. He gives

  461. some of his peas

  462. away.

  463. This guy

  464. is

  465. thoroughly

  466. religious.

  467. He's

  468. keeping the

  469. command of God

  470. to the letter

  471. of the law.

  472. And so he says,

  473. God,

  474. I must be okay.

  475. But the problem

  476. is,

  477. is his evaluation

  478. of himself

  479. is based on

  480. the wrong standard.

  481. He compares

  482. himself with other

  483. people on the

  484. surface

  485. and he doesn't

  486. look deep,

  487. deep in his

  488. heart.

  489. He looks at

  490. the tax

  491. collector and

  492. goes,

  493. I must be okay

  494. because I'm

  495. clearly not as

  496. bad as that

  497. guy.

  498. And that

  499. is our

  500. normal

  501. human

  502. tendency.

  503. We do

  504. it by

  505. default.

  506. When it

  507. comes to

  508. morality,

  509. we look

  510. down the

  511. line.

  512. When it

  513. comes to

  514. riches,

  515. we look

  516. up the

  517. line because

  518. there's

  519. always

  520. someone

  521. richer

  522. than me.

  523. That means

  524. I don't

  525. have to be

  526. so generous

  527. because

  528. someone else

  529. should be.

  530. But I

  531. look down

  532. the line

  533. when it

  534. comes to

  535. morality

  536. because

  537. there's

  538. always

  539. someone

  540. worse

  541. than me.

  542. And that

  543. makes me

  544. feel good.

  545. I

  546. know a

  547. guy who

  548. is serving

  549. two

  550. consecutive

  551. life

  552. sentences

  553. in

  554. Long Bay

  555. Jail.

  556. He killed

  557. a mother

  558. and her

  559. baby.

  560. And he

  561. was in

  562. the same

  563. wing of

  564. Long Bay

  565. Jail as

  566. the

  567. Milpera

  568. Bicycle

  569. Massacre

  570. guys.

  571. You know,

  572. the guys

  573. had the

  574. shootout

  575. in Milpera

  576. years ago.

  577. One day

  578. those

  579. bikey

  580. guys grabbed

  581. this guy,

  582. they beat

  583. him up and

  584. poured

  585. boiling water

  586. all over

  587. him for

  588. daring to

  589. murder a

  590. baby.

  591. How dare

  592. you do

  593. that,

  594. you scumbag.

  595. Now,

  596. these are

  597. the guys

  598. who gun

  599. down a

  600. seven-year-old

  601. girl.

  602. If she

  603. was seven,

  604. it's kind

  605. of different.

  606. When it

  607. comes to

  608. morality,

  609. we look

  610. down the

  611. line and

  612. even when

  613. you're

  614. sitting,

  615. languishing

  616. in a

  617. prison cell

  618. in Long

  619. Bay Jail,

  620. there is

  621. always

  622. someone

  623. worse

  624. than

  625. you.

  626. It is

  627. our

  628. default

  629. position.

  630. Even

  631. people who

  632. should know

  633. better,

  634. consequence of

  635. their sin,

  636. they live it

  637. for the rest

  638. of their

  639. life around

  640. them,

  641. still look

  642. down the

  643. line.

  644. And I

  645. think Jesus

  646. says very

  647. clearly that

  648. that is our

  649. normal human

  650. tendency and

  651. how much

  652. easy it is

  653. for us,

  654. the religious

  655. people,

  656. to do

  657. it.

  658. The tax

  659. collector is

  660. in total

  661. contrast to

  662. the Pharisee.

  663. He beats

  664. himself on

  665. the chest

  666. and he

  667. says,

  668. God have

  669. mercy on

  670. me,

  671. a sinner.

  672. Who does

  673. he compare

  674. himself with?

  675. Well,

  676. nobody as

  677. far as we

  678. can tell

  679. from the

  680. text.

  681. A better

  682. reading of

  683. this statement

  684. is,

  685. God have

  686. mercy on

  687. me,

  688. the sinner.

  689. He's not

  690. trying to

  691. find comfort

  692. in the fact

  693. that he's

  694. part of a

  695. large group

  696. in the

  697. same boat.

  698. He doesn't

  699. say,

  700. sure,

  701. I've made

  702. a few

  703. mistakes,

  704. I've made

  705. even some

  706. really big

  707. mistakes,

  708. I acknowledge

  709. my mistakes,

  710. but I'm no

  711. different than

  712. anyone else,

  713. I'm only human

  714. after all.

  715. He says,

  716. God,

  717. I am the

  718. sinner.

  719. I am the

  720. model sinner,

  721. I am the

  722. essential sinner.

  723. He doesn't

  724. care how he

  725. compares with

  726. other people,

  727. he doesn't

  728. even look

  729. to the

  730. Pharisee,

  731. he just

  732. knows he's

  733. not okay

  734. with God

  735. and he

  736. cries out

  737. in despair.

  738. And Jesus

  739. says that

  740. that scumbag

  741. goes home

  742. justified

  743. by God

  744. while the

  745. other is

  746. rejected.

  747. The scumbag

  748. tax collector

  749. goes home

  750. with God

  751. as his

  752. friend.

  753. The way

  754. that we

  755. are always

  756. to approach

  757. God is

  758. God have

  759. mercy on

  760. me,

  761. the sinner.

  762. The

  763. fulfillment

  764. of religious

  765. duties

  766. doesn't put

  767. us in

  768. God's good

  769. books.

  770. There is

  771. no other

  772. way to be

  773. right with

  774. the God

  775. of this

  776. universe

  777. than to

  778. ask him

  779. for mercy

  780. through

  781. Jesus.

  782. And we

  783. need to

  784. all do

  785. that.

  786. Don't

  787. expect to

  788. get into

  789. God's good

  790. books by

  791. the terrorist

  792. method and

  793. to make

  794. demands of

  795. God.

  796. Don't

  797. expect to

  798. get there

  799. by the

  800. resume

  801. method and

  802. give him

  803. a big

  804. list of

  805. all my

  806. finer points

  807. and hopefully

  808. they will

  809. outbalance

  810. my bad

  811. points and

  812. God will

  813. be okay.

  814. God is

  815. not impressed

  816. by the

  817. resume

  818. method,

  819. even the

  820. resume

  821. method of

  822. religious

  823. people.

  824. And that's

  825. when Jesus

  826. eyeballs us.

  827. No,

  828. no,

  829. forget that.

  830. That's when

  831. Jesus eyeballs

  832. me.

  833. Because in

  834. reality,

  835. I am more

  836. religious than

  837. the average

  838. Aussie bloke.

  839. I read the

  840. Bible, I

  841. pray, I

  842. go to

  843. church, hang

  844. out at

  845. church.

  846. In fact, I

  847. live at

  848. church.

  849. I've got a

  850. theological

  851. degree and

  852. something else

  853. called a

  854. diploma in

  855. ministry, not

  856. that anyone

  857. knows what

  858. that is.

  859. I work

  860. full-time in

  861. ministry.

  862. I travel

  863. around the

  864. country and

  865. speak to

  866. church leaders

  867. and train

  868. church leaders.

  869. I read

  870. deep

  871. theological

  872. books.

  873. I run

  874. youth

  875. ministry

  876. programs.

  877. And I

  878. even get

  879. to wear a

  880. dress.

  881. I look

  882. religious.

  883. I'm

  884. probably more

  885. religious than

  886. anyone here.

  887. Are you

  888. impressed?

  889. God's not.

  890. God's not.

  891. Don't fall

  892. into the trap

  893. of thinking

  894. that we

  895. impress God

  896. by what

  897. we do.

  898. Anyone who

  899. says that

  900. there is

  901. something

  902. religious

  903. activity,

  904. some form

  905. of religious

  906. activity that

  907. you must

  908. do is

  909. wrong.

  910. He's

  911. wrong.

  912. The best

  913. case scenario

  914. is I think

  915. potentially the

  916. first believer.

  917. If he wasn't

  918. the first

  919. believer, he's

  920. certainly the

  921. first guy to

  922. follow Jesus

  923. into heaven.

  924. you know

  925. the bloke?

  926. He's stuck

  927. up there on

  928. the cross

  929. beside Jesus.

  930. He's on the

  931. cross beside

  932. Jesus and he

  933. says to Jesus,

  934. remember me

  935. when you come

  936. into your

  937. kingdom.

  938. That is, he

  939. recognized who

  940. Jesus was.

  941. It was a

  942. statement of

  943. faith and

  944. trust in

  945. Jesus, the

  946. guy who was

  947. dying beside

  948. him on the

  949. cross.

  950. He recognized

  951. that Jesus

  952. must be a

  953. king because

  954. he's going

  955. into his

  956. kingdom and

  957. his kingdom

  958. is going to

  959. come when

  960. he dies.

  961. And so

  962. what did

  963. Jesus say to

  964. this guy?

  965. Yeah, mate,

  966. not a problem.

  967. If you can

  968. manage to get

  969. yourself down

  970. off the cross

  971. and get off

  972. the church,

  973. then guarantee

  974. you can be

  975. part of the

  976. kingdom.

  977. No, that

  978. wasn't it.

  979. Or did he

  980. say, hey

  981. disciples, bring

  982. up the hoses,

  983. we need to

  984. baptize this

  985. guy.

  986. No, that

  987. wasn't it.

  988. Today you

  989. will be with

  990. me in

  991. paradise.

  992. Today you

  993. will be with

  994. me in

  995. paradise.

  996. God

  997. is

  998. because he

  999. put his

  1000. faith in

  1001. Jesus.

  1002. Christianity

  1003. isn't about

  1004. self-righteousness,

  1005. it is about

  1006. God-given

  1007. righteousness and

  1008. that man had

  1009. it right there

  1010. and then on

  1011. the cross.

  1012. Without any

  1013. activity, on

  1014. the cross,

  1015. God-given

  1016. righteousness.

  1017. But there is a

  1018. message here for

  1019. us, not just for

  1020. those who need to

  1021. put their trust in

  1022. Jesus, but that

  1023. for those of us

  1024. who have put our

  1025. trust in Jesus,

  1026. it is so easy

  1027. for us to start

  1028. with faith in

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. We look at

  1031. where we are,

  1032. where we're at,

  1033. what God has

  1034. done for us, and

  1035. it seems like a

  1036. pretty simple

  1037. choice to put our

  1038. trust in Jesus.

  1039. But it's easy to

  1040. move from that

  1041. faith in Jesus and

  1042. back into religion

  1043. and start having

  1044. confidence because of

  1045. what I do.

  1046. it's often a

  1047. subtle shift, but

  1048. it's so easy to

  1049. do it.

  1050. The longer and

  1051. longer you've been

  1052. a Christian, the

  1053. more that God has

  1054. worked in you and

  1055. changed you and

  1056. you've been in

  1057. church and you go

  1058. to youth group and

1059. you go to read the

  1060. Bible and pray and

  1061. you're involved in

  1062. all these Christian

  1063. activities and you

  1064. hang around with

  1065. Christian people and

  1066. you kind of get

  1067. changed.

  1068. changed.

  1069. And you can start

  1070. looking down on

  1071. others.

  1072. Even just within

  1073. the church, you

  1074. can start looking

  1075. down on others.

  1076. It's so easy for

  1077. your shift to

  1078. happen from faith

  1079. back into who you

  1080. are and what you've

  1081. done for Jesus.

  1082. You start to think

  1083. maybe I'm not that

  1084. bad after all.

  1085. God must be

  1086. impressed with me.

  1087. And so you start

  1088. putting your trust

  1089. in religion.

  1090. And so the

  1091. question for us is,

  1092. are we totally

  1093. looking away from

  1094. ourselves?

  1095. When you see

  1096. yourself standing

  1097. before the King

  1098. Jesus, the Holy

  1099. Judge, what are

  1100. you going to look

  1101. to?

  1102. What are you

  1103. going to trust

  1104. in?

  1105. Let me say that

  1106. it would be

  1107. absolutely shocking

  1108. for us to

  1109. have read that

  1110. Bible passage and

  1111. not be terrified

  1112. by those four

  1113. words in the

  1114. middle of verse

  1115. 14.

  1116. Terrified by

  1117. those four words

  1118. in the middle of

  1119. verse 14.

  1120. I tell you,

  1121. this man,

  1122. that is the

  1123. tax collector,

  1124. went down to

  1125. his house

  1126. justified.

  1127. And here are

  1128. the four words,

  1129. rather than

  1130. the other.

  1131. Rather than

  1132. the other.

  1133. The Pharisee,

  1134. the righteous

  1135. one, the one

  1136. thanking God

  1137. for his

  1138. righteousness,

  1139. righteousness,

  1140. was not

  1141. justified.

  1142. He was

  1143. condemned.

  1144. People who

  1145. trust in the

  1146. righteousness that

  1147. God has worked

  1148. in them for

  1149. the basis of

  1150. their acceptance

  1151. and acquittal

  1152. and justification

  1153. before God

  1154. do not go

  1155. down to their

  1156. house justified.

  1157. people who

  1158. really believe

  1159. that the

  1160. righteousness

  1161. that God

  1162. helps them

  1163. do in this

  1164. life is a

  1165. sufficient basis

  1166. for their

  1167. justification,

  1168. Jesus says,

  1169. will not

  1170. be justified

  1171. before God.

  1172. So,

  1173. Paul's,

  1174. this is very

  1175. serious.

  1176. Very

  1177. serious.

  1178. we are not

  1179. justified by

  1180. the righteousness

  1181. that Christ

  1182. works in

  1183. us,

  1184. but by the

  1185. righteousness

  1186. that Christ

  1187. is for

  1188. us.

  1189. Let me say

  1190. that again.

  1191. We are not

  1192. justified by

  1193. the righteousness

  1194. that Christ

  1195. works in

  1196. us,

  1197. but the

  1198. righteousness

  1199. that Christ

  1200. is for

  1201. us.

  1202. Me having

  1203. a reverent

  1204. in front

  1205. of my

  1206. name,

  1207. a theological

  1208. degree at

  1209. the end

  1210. of my

  1211. name,

  1212. and all

  1213. the works

  1214. that I

  1215. do in

  1216. between day

  1217. after day

  1218. after day

  1219. for God's

  1220. glory mean

  1221. deadly squat

  1222. for my

  1223. justification.

  1224. And if you

  1225. don't know what

  1226. deadly squat is,

  1227. it means

  1228. nothing.

  1229. And so I

  1230. plead with you

  1231. today on behalf

  1232. of Jesus that

  1233. for your

  1234. justification,

  1235. you do not

  1236. look to,

  1237. that you

  1238. do not

  1239. trust in

  1240. what God

  1241. has worked

  1242. out in

  1243. you.

  1244. Instead,

  1245. look to

  1246. and trust

  1247. in Christ

  1248. alone and

  1249. all that

  1250. God is

  1251. for you

  1252. in him.

  1253. 2 Corinthians

  1254. 5,

  1255. God made

  1256. him to be

  1257. seen who

  1258. knew no

  1259. sin,

  1260. so that in

  1261. him we

  1262. might become

  1263. the righteousness

  1264. of God.

  1265. And so hear

  1266. the words of

  1267. Jesus again,

  1268. everyone who

  1269. exalts

  1270. himself will

  1271. be humbled

  1272. and he

  1273. who humbles

  1274. himself will

  1275. be exalted.

  1276. Everyone who

  1277. ensuring

  1278. himself will

  1279. be humbled

  1280. and he

  1281. who humbles

  1282. himself will

  1283. be exalted.

  1284. Thank you.
