  1. Let's pray.

  2. Fathers, we come now to the end of this road to Jerusalem with Jesus.

  3. Along the way, he's cleared up many misconceptions of what it means to follow you.

  4. And now we have the challenge before us.

  5. As the words of the old poems say, only one life will soon be passed, only what's done for Christ will last.

  6. May those words reverberate in our hearts and our minds this morning.

  7. And we ask it for your glory. Amen.

  8. A team of European doctors in the 1990s, in the early 1990s,

  9. discovered that there was a higher chance of having a heart attack on Monday than any other day of the week.

  10. In fact, they found out there was a dramatic increase in all stress-related illnesses on Mondays.

  11. Blood pressure is up, and so you're more likely to have a stroke on a Monday.

  12. Stomach acidity is up, increasing the risk of ulcers.

  13. People are twice as likely to commit suicide on Mondays than any other day of the week.

  14. And so they concluded that the Monday morning feeling is actually no myth.

  15. It's medical fact.

  16. There was one explanation for it.

  17. Most of us feel that the very idea of working another week, depressing.

  18. However, it wasn't because of the workload or the responsibilities.

  19. The research found that there was little distinction between a high flyer

  20. and what you might call a low flyer, I'm assuming.

  21. People with mundane and undemanding jobs displayed the same symptoms

  22. as those at the other end of the scale.

  23. No matter how good the job as well, or how considerate the employer,

  24. how nice the people you worked with,

  25. or even the surrounds in which you work,

  26. it made no difference.

  27. The very idea of working another week caused so much stress-related illnesses.

  28. And the reason?

  29. Purposelessness.

  30. Purposelessness is having plenty to do,

  31. but no satisfying reason to do it.

  32. It's like living life without purpose

  33. is kind of like playing soccer without goalposts.

  34. You can dribble the ball with great skill,

  35. you can execute some fine passes,

  36. you can enjoy your time on the paddock,

  37. but in the end, what's the point?

  38. What's the point to it all?

  39. Unless there is some goal, some objective,

  40. some reason for doing it,

  41. then in the end,

  42. it is all a farce.

  43. It is this quest for purpose in our daily existence

  44. that makes this parable of the ten miners

  45. so drastically important for us.

  46. Jesus here provides us with that vital missing link,

  47. and that is future perspective.

  48. And we need that future perspective

  49. in order to give our daily routine significance.

  50. As you know,

  51. we have been travelling with Jesus

  52. on his way to Jerusalem,

  53. and as we've been travelling with Jesus,

  54. he has encountered a number of people,

  55. he has told lots of stories

  56. about what it means to be part of his kingdom,

  57. he has cleared up misconceptions

  58. of what it means to be his disciple,

  59. he has told stories like the rich fool

  60. and the lost sheep and the lost coin

  61. and the lost son and the shrewd manager,

  62. he has encountered people

  63. like the rich young ruler

  64. and the blind beggar,

  65. and as he arrives close to Jerusalem,

  66. he has one final encounter

  67. with a person,

  68. and that is with Zacchaeus.

  69. And this encounter with Zacchaeus

  70. is where this journey with Jesus

  71. comes to its climax.

  72. The visit of Jesus to Jericho

  73. attracts a large crowd.

  74. Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector,

  75. wants a chance to look at Jesus,

  76. but he can't because he's too short.

  77. Instead, he climbs a tree

  78. to get a glimpse of Jesus

  79. as he wanders by.

  80. The important thing is, though,

  81. in that encounter

  82. is the fact that Jesus took the initiative.

  83. Verse 5,

  84. Zacchaeus,

  85. Jesus said to him,

  86. Zacchaeus,

  87. come down immediately,

  88. I must stay at your house today.

  89. And it's this acceptance

  90. of Zacchaeus

  91. by Jesus

  92. that repulses the crowd.

  93. It says in verse 7,

  94. all the people saw this

  95. and began to mutter,

  96. he has gone

  97. to be the guest

  98. of a sinner.

  99. You see,

  100. Zac and his kind

  101. were social outcasts,

  102. but Jesus welcomes him.

  103. Zacchaeus responds to Jesus

  104. by coming out of the tree immediately

  105. and it says he received

  106. Jesus with joy.

  107. A reception of joy

  108. to Jesus

  109. is the appropriate response

  110. on Jesus' actions

  111. on our behalf.

  112. We also see another response

  113. to Jesus by Zac.

  114. In verse 8,

  115. it says,

  116. Look, Lord,

  117. here and now

  118. I give half of my possessions

  119. to the poor

  120. and if I have cheated anybody

  121. out of anything,

  122. I will pay back

  123. four times the amount.

  124. There are, in fact,

  125. two responses there.

  126. A new generosity,

  127. which means he gives

  128. half of his assets

  129. to the poor.

  130. And secondly,

  131. a desire to undo

  132. the wrongs from the past.

  133. And he says

  134. he will pay back them

  135. four times as much

  136. anyone that he has robbed.

  137. It's interesting

  138. that normal restitution

  139. only actually added 20%.

  140. If I've robbed you

  141. of a dollar,

  142. I'll give you

  143. a dollar,

  144. you know,

  145. a dollar,

  146. twenty back.

  147. But Zacchaeus

  148. actually suggests

  149. and submits himself

  150. to the highest penalty

  151. that the Old Testament

  152. law required.

  153. The highest penalty.

  154. You see,

  155. what has happened here,

  156. God has made

  157. the impossible happen.

  158. He's done the impossible.

  159. A rich man

  160. gets through

  161. the eye of the needle.

  162. A rich man

  163. gets through

  164. the eye of the needle

  165. and here

  166. at the end

  167. of this road

  168. to Jerusalem,

  169. Jesus sets up

  170. Zacchaeus

  171. as the model disciple.

  172. The model disciple.

  173. He receives

  174. the grace

  175. of the Lord Jesus

  176. with joy

  177. and a radical

  178. transformation

  179. of priorities

  180. and his life

  181. is a result.

  182. His priorities

  183. change because

  184. of this new life.

  185. It's this new life

  186. and his priority

  187. which will govern

  188. the rest of his life.

  189. Which is why

  190. Jesus launches

  191. into this parable

  192. straight after

  193. his encounter

  194. with Zacchaeus.

  195. Jesus is close

  196. to Jerusalem

  197. and there are

  198. some that are

  199. there with Jesus

  200. thinking that

  201. it's all over.

  202. It's about to finish.

  203. Jesus the king

  204. who's done all these

  205. miracles along the way

  206. he's going to get

  207. to Jerusalem

  208. and he's going to

  209. beat up the Romans

  210. and kick the king out

  211. and we're going to

  212. go to the palace

  213. and we're going to

  214. get the temple back.

  215. It's all going to

  216. be hunky dory

  217. and it's going to

  218. be like the good old days

  219. we're going to party on

  220. and it's kind of

  221. the king is established

  222. and he's thrown

  223. and Jesus goes

  224. hang on a bit.

  225. Verse 11

  226. Jesus tells

  227. this parable

  228. because he was

  229. near Jerusalem

  230. and the people

  231. thought that the

  232. kingdom of God

  233. was going to

  234. appear at once.

  235. They thought it

  236. was almost over.

  237. And so Jesus

  238. uses this parable

  239. to instruct

  240. his disciples

  241. that salvation

  242. as we saw

  243. with Zacchaeus

  244. is not the end

  245. of the matter.

  246. It's not just

  247. a matter of

  248. ticking a box

  249. and praying a prayer

  250. and getting in

  251. the kingdom

  252. and that's it.

  253. Getting into

  254. the kingdom of God

  255. like Zacchaeus

  256. doesn't mean that

  257. you just kind of

  258. sit back

  259. and wait

  260. for heaven

  261. to come.

  262. You know

  263. we fill our pews

  264. it's not like

  265. church is like

  266. a holding pen

  267. for Christians

  268. waiting for Jesus

  269. to come back

  270. like a bunch

  271. of sheep

  272. really

  273. in a pen

  274. kind of

  275. waiting to be

  276. shorn.

  277. If you're part

  278. of the kingdom

  279. of God

  280. if you respond

  281. to Jesus

  282. then you've

  283. got a job

  284. to do

  285. until the king

  286. comes back.

  287. So he says

  288. this

  289. soon after

  290. they arrived

  291. in Jerusalem

  292. Jesus would

  293. be leaving

  294. them.

  295. In verse 12

  296. he said

  297. this

  298. a man

  299. of noble

  300. birth

  301. went to

  302. a distant

  303. country

  304. to have

  305. himself

  306. appointed

  307. king

  308. and then

  309. to return.

  310. But the

  311. disciples were

  312. not meant

  313. to be

  314. disheartened

  315. by this.

  316. Yes

  317. Jesus was

  318. going to

  319. leave them

  320. he made

  321. it clear

  322. they were

  323. not to be

  324. disheartened

  325. by this

  326. because the

  327. king

  328. would

  329. return.

  330. And the

  331. point of

  332. this parable

  333. is what

  334. do they do

  335. between when

  336. the king

  337. leaves and

  338. when the

  339. king comes

  340. back again?

  341. What happens

  342. in the meantime?

  343. Verse 13

  344. So he called

  345. in ten of his

  346. servants and

  347. gave them ten

  348. minors, put

  349. this money to

  350. work until I

  351. come back.

  352. That

  353. sentence

  354. is

  355. Jesus'

  356. answer to

  357. the dreaded

  358. Monday morning

  359. feeling.

  360. That sentence

  361. is the

  362. Bible's work

  363. ethic.

  364. We've got a

  365. job to do

  366. for the

  367. king until

  368. the king

  369. comes back.

  370. And that

  371. gives everything

  372. meaning.

  373. It gives

  374. everything

  375. purpose.

  376. And this

  377. work ethic

  378. is not

  379. grounded in

  380. a moral

  381. duty but

  382. in future

  383. hope.

  384. Future

  385. hope.

  386. We are

  387. to put the

  388. king's

  389. resources to

  390. work until

  391. he comes

  392. back.

  393. Those

  394. few words

  395. are desperately

  396. important

  397. because the

  398. world is

  399. going

  400. somewhere.

  401. There is a

  402. hope and

  403. the king

  404. is returning.

  405. Therefore,

  406. make the

  407. most of the

  408. opportunities

  409. and the

  410. resources we

  411. have to

  412. invest in

  413. the kingdom

  414. by working

  415. hard for

  416. the king.

  417. I said

  418. this a

  419. couple of

  420. Sundays

  421. ago on

  422. Vision

  423. Sunday.

  424. Wise

  425. investments.

  426. This is

  427. what gives

  428. our daily

  429. routine

  430. meaning.

  431. It's

  432. what gives

  433. our daily

  434. routine

  435. purpose.

  436. This is

  437. the task

  438. that Jesus

  439. leaves us

  440. with.

  441. And what

  442. this parable

  443. says is

  444. that people

  445. are divided

  446. into three

  447. broad

  448. categories

  449. depending

  450. on how

  451. they respond

  452. to the

  453. challenge

  454. from the

  455. king.

  456. At one

  457. extreme

  458. are those

  459. described in

  460. verse 14.

  461. Jesus

  462. saying is

  463. that there

  464. will be

  465. some who

  466. reject

  467. God's

  468. king.

  469. They'll

  470. reject

  471. Jesus

  472. being the

  473. king.

  474. They won't

  475. want him

  476. to be

  477. king.

  478. And they

  479. won't

  480. accept his

  481. authority

  482. as the

  483. king.

  484. Some

  485. will hide

  486. their

  487. rebellion

  488. against

  489. the

  490. king

  491. under

  492. the

  493. guise

  494. of

  495. doubt

  496. or

  497. ignorance.

  498. But Jesus

  499. is clear

  500. here that

  501. the main

  502. resistance

  503. to the

  504. rule of

  505. king

  506. Jesus

  507. is

  508. the

  509. will.

  510. Verse

  511. 14.

  512. We don't

  513. want

  514. this man

  515. to be

  516. our

  517. king.

  518. We don't

  519. want this

  520. man to

  521. be our

  522. king.

  523. But of

  524. course it's

  525. all in

  526. vain because

  527. he is

  528. the king.

  529. Verse 15.

  530. He was

  531. made king

  532. however and

  533. he returned

  534. home.

  535. That's

  536. the reality

  537. of it.

  538. My

  539. desire for

  540. Jesus not

  541. to be

  542. king is

  543. somehow

  544. stronger than

  545. the fact

  546. he is

  547. king.

  548. Nothing

  549. can stop

  550. Jesus'

  551. final

  552. triumph.

  553. Whether

  554. you like

  555. it or

  556. not,

  557. he is

  558. king.

  559. And the

  560. Bible says

  561. that people

  562. will resist

  563. his

  564. will,

  565. with their

  566. will,

  567. resist

  568. king

  569. Jesus

  570. right to

  571. the very

  572. end.

  573. Right to

  574. the very

  575. end.

  576. It

  577. astounds

  578. me that

  579. the Bible

  580. says that

  581. in the

  582. last days

  583. when Jesus

  584. appears with

  585. loud trumpet

  586. sounds,

  587. people will be

  588. confronted with

  589. the descending

  590. Lord Jesus

  591. and instead

  592. of bowing

  593. and asking

  594. for mercy

  595. in that

  596. last moment

  597. of their

  598. life,

  599. they will

  600. say let

  601. the mountains

  602. fall on

  603. me rather

  604. than submit

  605. to him.

  606. The

  607. strength of

  608. the will

  609. to resist

  610. Jesus right

  611. to the

  612. very end.

  613. Nothing

  614. can stop

  615. Jesus'

  616. final triumph.

  617. He is

  618. king.

  619. The end

  620. of the

  621. parable tells

  622. us what

  623. happened to

  624. those who

  625. rebelled

  626. against the

  627. king.

  628. Verse 27,

  629. but those

  630. enemies of

  631. mine who

  632. did not

  633. want me to

  634. be king

  635. over them,

  636. bring them

  637. here and

  638. kill them

  639. in front

  640. of me.

  641. Would

  642. have been

  643. so nice

  644. if he

  645. didn't

  646. mention

  647. that,

  648. wouldn't

  649. it?

  650. It would

  651. have been

  652. so much

  653. nicer if

  654. he didn't

  655. say it

  656. so strongly.

  657. But there

  658. is no room

  659. in God's

  660. kingdom for

  661. rebels.

  662. It's a

  663. harsh

  664. verdict,

  665. but by

  666. it Jesus

  667. conveys the

  668. hard truth

  669. that if

  670. you don't

  671. want to

  672. submit to

  673. the king

  674. then you

  675. have no

  676. place in

  677. the kingdom.

  678. What this

  679. parable is

  680. saying is

  681. that God

  682. takes our

  683. sin,

  684. our

  685. rebellion

  686. against him

  687. very

  688. seriously

  689. and he

  690. will judge

  691. all acts

  692. of rebellion

  693. against him.

  694. sin.

  695. The second

  696. category of

  697. people are

  698. at the

  699. other end

  700. of the

  701. extreme.

  702. There are

  703. those whom

  704. Jesus called

  705. into this

  706. story, the

  707. good servants.

  708. Verse 15,

  709. he was made

  710. king, however,

  711. returned home.

  712. Then he sent

  713. for the

  714. servants to

  715. those whom

  716. he had given

  717. money in

  718. order to find

  719. out what

  720. they had

  721. gained with

  722. it.

  723. The first

  724. one said,

  725. sir, your

  726. miner has

  727. earned ten

  728. more.

  729. Well done.

  730. my good

  731. servant.

  732. His master

  733. replied,

  734. because you

  735. have been

  736. trustworthy in

  737. a very small

  738. matter, take

  739. charge of

  740. ten cities.

  741. The second

  742. came and

  743. said, sir,

  744. your miner

  745. has earned

  746. five more.

  747. His master

  748. answered, you

  749. take charge of

  750. five cities.

  751. I think it's

  752. awesome.

  753. What the

  754. Bible actually

  755. portrays is

  756. that our

  757. deepest joy and

  758. satisfaction is

  759. found in

  760. serving the

  761. king.

  762. And this is

  763. clearly here as

  764. well.

  765. That what

  766. happens is,

  767. when you

  768. spend a

  769. life of

  770. serving king

  771. Jesus, what

  772. is the

  773. reward?

  774. More service.

  775. Over ten

  776. cities or

  777. five cities.

  778. More

  779. opportunities to

  780. serve king

  781. Jesus because

  782. it's where our

  783. deepest satisfaction

  784. and joy comes

  785. from.

  786. What a

  787. wonderful picture.

  788. Anyway, that's

  789. just a side

  790. point.

  791. What Jesus is

  792. using here is a

  793. financial metaphor

  794. to describe the

  795. sort of

  796. trustworthiness

  797. that God is

  798. working out in

  799. those who

  800. follow him.

  801. The minor

  802. represents the

  803. thing that

  804. Jesus left

  805. us with.

  806. The resources,

  807. the endowments,

  808. the charge,

  809. the mandate,

  810. the mandate to

  811. go and make

  812. disciples of

  813. all nations.

  814. The things that

  815. he wants us to

  816. get on with,

  817. his business,

  818. until he

  819. returns.

  820. What he is

  821. saying is that

  822. it actually

  823. matters how we

  824. live now.

  825. It matters how

  826. we order our

  827. priorities.

  828. It matters

  829. what we

  830. spend our

  831. time doing

  832. and how we

  833. use the

  834. resources that

  835. God has

  836. given us.

  837. What it's

  838. saying is that

  839. for those who

  840. are part of

  841. the kingdom,

  842. you don't sit

  843. around twiddling

  844. your thumbs,

  845. kind of just

  846. waiting for

  847. Jesus to come

  848. back.

  849. We've got a

  850. job to do

  851. for the

  852. king.

  853. It's saying

  854. that we use

  855. our resources

  856. and opportunities

  857. here,

  858. now,

  859. and they will

  860. have eternal

  861. consequences.

  862. In other

  863. words,

  864. it is possible

  865. to live in

  866. such a way

  867. now that

  868. heaven will

  869. actually be

  870. enriched for

  871. us.

  872. You get

  873. that?

  874. It is

  875. possible to

  876. live in

  877. such a way

  878. now that

  879. heaven will

  880. actually be

  881. enriched for

  882. us.

  883. And the

  884. mark of a

  885. good and

  886. trustworthy

  887. servant is

  888. that they

  889. make wise

  890. long-term

  891. investments.

  892. They build

  893. for the

  894. kingdom.

  895. This is

  896. brilliant news

  897. in a world

  898. that is full

  899. of Monday

  900. morning

  901. itis.

  902. It means

  903. that you

  904. can work

  905. your guts

  906. out in

  907. service of

  908. the king

  909. and it

  910. actually

  911. counts.

  912. It doesn't

  913. matter what

  914. your job

  915. is.

  916. It doesn't

  917. matter what

  918. role you

  919. feel in

  920. society.

  921. You might

  922. be a slave

  923. or a

  924. master.

  925. You

  926. might be

  927. a husband

  928. or a

  929. wife.

  930. You

  931. might be

  932. a child

  933. or a

  934. parent.

  935. Every

  936. Christian

  937. can and

  938. should

  939. dedicate

  940. their

  941. daily

  942. business

  943. to

  944. Christ

  945. the

  946. king.

  947. Do it

  948. all as

  949. if working

  950. for the

  951. king.

  952. And we

  953. do it

  954. because we

  955. are going

  956. somewhere.

  957. We have a

  958. goal and

  959. we have a

  960. hope.

  961. But there

  962. is one

  963. more

  964. servant.

  965. Verse 20.

  966. Then another

  967. servant came

  968. and said,

  969. Sir,

  970. here is

  971. your

  972. minor.

  973. I have

  974. kept it

  975. laid away

  976. in a

  977. piece of

  978. cloth.

  979. I was

  980. afraid of

  981. you because

  982. you're a

  983. hard man.

  984. You take

  985. out what

  986. you did

  987. not put

  988. in and

  989. reap

  990. what you

  991. did

  992. not

  993. sow.

  994. The

  995. first thing

  996. to say

  997. about this

  998. guy is

  999. that his

  1000. characterization

  1001. of the

  1002. king is

  1003. grossly

  1004. unfair.

  1005. he actually

  1006. gave his

  1007. servants

  1008. responsibility.

  1009. He is

  1010. saying that

  1011. the king

  1012. is a

  1013. vicious

  1014. exploiter

  1015. of people.

  1016. He's

  1017. quite clear

  1018. from this

  1019. story in

  1020. fact that

  1021. the king

  1022. is nothing

  1023. of the

  1024. kind.

  1025. For

  1026. whatever

  1027. reason this

  1028. servant

  1029. can't bring

  1030. himself to

  1031. believe in

  1032. the kindness

  1033. and the

  1034. generosity

  1035. of the

  1036. king.

  1037. He wraps

  1038. up that

  1039. little piece

  1040. of money.

  1041. I was

  1042. afraid

  1043. was his

  1044. excuse.

  1045. I was

  1046. afraid.

  1047. Was he

  1048. afraid that

  1049. he might

  1050. not be

  1051. successful?

  1052. Maybe.

  1053. Was he

  1054. afraid that

  1055. he might

  1056. actually

  1057. miserably

  1058. fail?

  1059. Maybe.

  1060. But do

  1061. you know

  1062. what I

  1063. think his

  1064. real problem

  1065. is?

  1066. He wasn't

  1067. afraid enough.

  1068. He didn't

  1069. fear the

  1070. master

  1071. enough.

  1072. He didn't

  1073. fear the

  1074. master.

  1075. If he

  1076. had he

  1077. actually

  1078. would have

  1079. done

  1080. something

  1081. with that

  1082. minor.

  1083. The truth

  1084. was that

  1085. he was a

  1086. wicked servant

  1087. looking for

  1088. an excuse

  1089. for his

  1090. laziness,

  1091. for his

  1092. negligence and

  1093. for his

  1094. irresponsibility.

  1095. laziness.

  1096. And Jesus

  1097. is warning

  1098. us against

  1099. laziness.

  1100. He is

  1101. telling us

  1102. that we

  1103. must work

  1104. for his

  1105. kingdom with

  1106. vision and

  1107. vigour.

  1108. We mustn't

  1109. allow fear

  1110. to make us

  1111. withdraw like a

  1112. turtle into the

  1113. security of our

  1114. shell.

  1115. We must be

  1116. prepared to

  1117. commit ourselves

  1118. boldly to

  1119. the kingdom,

  1120. to kingdom

  1121. initiatives.

  1122. we are not

  1123. to be rash

  1124. with the

  1125. resources that

  1126. God has

  1127. given us,

  1128. but we

  1129. are to

  1130. make courageous

  1131. decisions for

  1132. the king.

  1133. I think what

  1134. Jesus is saying

  1135. here is that we

  1136. should never be

  1137. content as

  1138. Christians just

  1139. to kind of

  1140. happily attend

  1141. church each

  1142. week, feel

  1143. secure and

  1144. cosy, while

  1145. the rest of the

  1146. world is going

  1147. to hell in a

  1148. handbasket.

  1149. He is

  1150. telling us not

  1151. to stay on

  1152. the sidelines

  1153. as spectators

  1154. of other

  1155. people's

  1156. enterprise for

  1157. the kingdom.

  1158. Because too

  1159. often we do

  1160. that.

  1161. Too often we

  1162. just do that

  1163. by nature.

  1164. You go and

  1165. watch a football

  1166. team play,

  1167. you sit up

  1168. there in the

  1169. stands, you

  1170. watch them, if

  1171. they win you

  1172. kind of feel

  1173. like somehow

  1174. you've

  1175. contributed to

  1176. it.

  1177. I mean,

  1178. does anyone

  1179. boast?

  1180. I mean, I

  1181. do that.

  1182. I think that

  1183. somehow my

  1184. cheering has

  1185. sort of got

  1186. them over the

  1187. line.

  1188. Too often we

  1189. do that.

  1190. We sit on

  1191. the sideline

  1192. as spectators

  1193. of other

  1194. people's

  1195. enterprise for

  1196. the kingdom.

  1197. That's why I

  1198. can say that

  1199. I'm particularly

  1200. encouraged that

  1201. the staff of

  1202. the parish

  1203. council are

  1204. not sitting

  1205. on the

  1206. sidelines.

  1207. They're not

  1208. sitting on

  1209. the sidelines.

  1210. Some of us

  1211. are crippled by

  1212. what we

  1213. perceive to

  1214. be our

  1215. lack of

  1216. resources.

  1217. You know, if

  1218. I could preach

  1219. like Billy

  1220. Graham, I'd

  1221. be an

  1222. evangelist.

  1223. Or if I

  1224. was any

  1225. good at

  1226. languages, I'd

  1227. be a

  1228. missionary.

  1229. If I

  1230. could do

  1231. music, I'd

  1232. sort of bump

  1233. Nick from

  1234. his job.

  1235. If I was

  1236. academic, I'd

  1237. go to Bible

  1238. college.

  1239. If I wasn't

  1240. so shy, I'd

  1241. evangelise my

  1242. friends.

  1243. If I had

  1244. more money, I'd

  1245. be able to

  1246. give.

  1247. I had more

  1248. time, I could

  1249. do church

  1250. ministry

  1251. more.

  1252. If only, if

  1253. only, if

  1254. only God

  1255. had not

  1256. given me so

  1257. little to

  1258. work with.

  1259. It's his

  1260. fault in the

  1261. end.

  1262. God isn't

  1263. interested in

  1264. the hypothetical

  1265. devotion that

  1266. we would give

  1267. if we had the

  1268. resources.

  1269. The irony of

  1270. this faithless

  1271. servant is

  1272. that in

  1273. trying to

  1274. avoid taking

  1275. risks, he

  1276. was in

  1277. fact taking

  1278. the greatest

  1279. risk of

  1280. all.

  1281. Gambling with

  1282. his place in

  1283. the kingdom,

  1284. gambling with

  1285. his life.

  1286. God's

  1287. life.

  1288. Well, friends,

  1289. sorry to

  1290. say, but it's

  1291. going to be

  1292. Monday again

  1293. tomorrow, and

  1294. you could wake

  1295. up depressed

  1296. and miserable

  1297. as people who

  1298. are going

  1299. nowhere, like

  1300. all the

  1301. purposeless

  1302. people who

  1303. drive here,

  1304. past you on

  1305. a Monday

  1306. morning, going

  1307. to their

  1308. offices in

  1309. their fancy

  1310. cars.

  1311. Or you

  1312. could be

  1313. motivated and

  1314. ambitious as

  1315. people who

  1316. know that you

  1317. have a hope,

  1318. a purpose,

  1319. and a reason,

  1320. and a job

  1321. to do, using

  1322. the king's

  1323. resources to

  1324. build up

  1325. treasure in

  1326. heaven, and

  1327. enriching your

  1328. experience and

  1329. other people's

  1330. experience of

  1331. heaven until

  1332. he comes.

  1333. The message

  1334. for us as

  1335. we get near

  1336. Jerusalem with

  1337. Jesus, over

  1338. these whole

  1339. number of

  1340. weeks as

  1341. we're travelled

  1342. with Jesus,

  1343. is quite

  1344. simple.

  1345. Honour the

  1346. king.

  1347. Live for

  1348. the king.

  1349. All of our

  1350. lives are on

  1351. the way to

  1352. eternity.

  1353. Jesus has

  1354. gone.

  1355. He's left.

  1356. After his

  1357. resurrection,

  1358. after his

  1359. ascension,

  1360. and his

  1361. glorification,

  1362. and he sits

  1363. on the

  1364. throne now.

  1365. And the

  1366. day has

  1367. been set

  1368. when he

  1369. will return.

  1370. And all

  1371. of our

  1372. lives are

  1373. on the

  1374. way to

  1375. eternity.

  1376. An

  1377. eternity

  1378. with

  1379. Christ,

  1380. or a

  1381. Christ-less

  1382. eternity.

  1383. And so,

  1384. in the

  1385. words of

  1386. the old

  1387. poem,

  1388. only one

  1389. life will

  1390. soon be

  1391. passed,

  1392. only what's

  1393. done for

  1394. Christ will

  1395. last.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Amen.

  1406. Amen.

  1407. Amen.

  1408. Amen.

  1409. Amen.

  1410. Amen.

  1411. Amen.

  1412. Amen.

  1413. Amen.
