  1. Let's pray.

  2. Gracious God, we ask for you to pour out your spirit amongst us now as we look at your word again,

  3. and particularly a passage which just displays your greatness.

  4. Who are we, O Lord, that we could give so generously?

  5. Father, I pray that you would search our hearts that we might give with honest intent,

  6. that we might desire your glory, that we might see all things come from you.

  7. And who are we to do this? And we ask it for your sake. Amen.

  8. Since the St. Paul's Vision 2020 was launched a few weeks ago, I've had time to go over the plans.

  9. You've had time to discuss them amongst yourselves or with the leaders and to pray about them and to consider your commitment to them.

  10. And, of course, what we launched a few weeks ago is not the final word on what's going to happen here.

  11. Obviously, in the next 11 years, there's an awful lot of work to be done,

  12. and it's certainly impossible to sit this side of 11 years and to work out all the details,

  13. particularly all the fine operational details of every ministry for the next 11 years.

  14. Those things will happen.

  15. That will be discussed as we go along and work out what we need to do and is where God's leading us.

  16. But for now, we have the big picture.

  17. We have the big picture.

  18. We have the key elements of why we exist, what we value as a church,

  19. what we hope to achieve under God, him giving us the strength and the mercy to do it.

  20. What we hope is that it will pull us together as a church to work in a common goal,

  21. to head in a common direction for God's glory.

  22. And the question which is before us, the one that I left you with on Vision Sunday,

  23. is will you commit yourself to what the Lord has laid before us as his people?

  24. More importantly than the question of will you commit yourself to Vision 2020,

  25. is will you commit yourself fully to the Lord in this place?

  26. Will you commit yourself fully to the Lord in this place?

  27. On Vision Sunday, we looked at the parable of the shrewd manager in Luke,

  28. and the call of Jesus there was for us to make decisions now in view of eternity.

  29. And in particular, the call was for us to build up treasures in heaven

  30. and to use our money now and to put it behind ministry.

  31. It is the one thing that you will buy which will actually be an internal investment.

  32. I've also mentioned a number of points that for Christians,

  33. money is not purely a financial issue.

  34. It is a spiritual issue.

  35. And so what we are doing here today on Commitment Sunday

  36. is not fundraising, it is faith-raising.

  37. That's the deal.

  38. That's what we're working with here.

  39. It's fundraising, not fundraising.

  40. Faith-raising, not fundraising.

  41. It's been a long day.

  42. 1 Chronicles is primarily about David,

  43. primarily about his reign.

  44. It's about David's reign as king and the building up to the construction of the temple.

  45. And you see David, even though he made a bunch of mistakes in 1 Chronicles,

  46. you see him come to the fore at the end of this book.

  47. The temple is crucial for the people of God.

  48. It is the permanent structure where God will permanently dwell with his people.

  49. It is a recapturing, if you like, of the Garden of Eden

  50. where people and God walked together

  51. and were in peace and harmony and rest with each other.

  52. And so it would be the place where God would rule the world.

  53. It would be the centre of the world.

  54. It was the symbol of God's unending state of rest and peace with his people.

  55. A permanent dwelling where God would permanently dwell amongst his people.

  56. It was crucial for the nation of Israel for this to happen.

  57. David had already been told that he wasn't to build the temple

  58. and so what he does in his retirement years

  59. is he gets ready for his successor and his son Solomon.

  60. Verses 1-9 describe the facts for us on a human level.

  61. There is an incredible generosity in Israel

  62. for the collection to pay for the building of the temple in Jerusalem.

  63. David led the way by giving of the official treasury,

  64. the stuff that he had the checkbook for,

  65. the official treasury of Israel.

  66. He gave significantly out of that

  67. but he also gave significantly out of his personal resources.

  68. And these personal resources were highly valued

  69. or in actual fact these resources in the original language

  70. they were the treasures of the king.

  71. It's what the king treasured.

  72. They were highly valued by the king.

  73. They were treasured by the king

  74. because they were kept in reserve for the king

  75. as an insurance policy

  76. against any unforeseen political misfortunes

  77. or natural calamities.

  78. So if he needed to buy an army

  79. to beat up someone who was against him,

  80. he's got his own money to put into it

  81. as his own personal security.

  82. So what happens here is that David leads the people

  83. by giving of the goods

  84. that were stored up for his own personal security.

  85. The amounts are there.

  86. 100 tons of gold, 240 tons of silver

  87. but the amounts actually don't matter.

  88. The amounts don't actually matter.

  89. What matters is he led the people

  90. in giving up of his personal security.

  91. And the Bible leads me consistently to conclude

  92. that the extent to which we are prepared

  93. to risk our material well-being

  94. is a measure of the seriousness

  95. in which we take our discipleship.

  96. That is why, friends,

  97. this is a faith-raising issue for St Paul's.

  98. That's why David challenges the people,

  99. now,

  100. who is willing to consecrate himself today

  101. to the Lord?

  102. This whole thing in raising money for the temple

  103. is purely about that.

  104. David calls the whole assembly together

  105. and says to them,

  106. will you freely offer yourselves to God?

  107. The issue is not the amassing of glittering jewels

  108. or precious metals

  109. but the pouring of themselves as God's people

  110. into the building of the temple

  111. as a symbol of the wholehearted worship

  112. that will soon take place in that temple.

  113. What David is calling for here

  114. is very similar to what Paul says

  115. to the Macedonian churches in 2 Corinthians.

  116. Again, in the context of giving,

  117. he says,

  118. they did not do as we expected

  119. but they gave themselves first to the Lord.

  120. They consecrated themselves to the Lord

  121. and then to us

  122. in keeping with his will.

  123. That's just what David says

  124. a thousand years earlier or more.

  125. Give yourselves to the Lord.

  126. It's what I've been looking at

  127. as we've been travelling with Jesus

  128. on this road to Jerusalem.

  129. What does it mean for Jesus to be our king?

  130. And he says,

  131. give yourselves to the Lord.

  132. Give yourselves to this king

  133. who will consecrate themselves this day to Jesus.

  134. And the response was overwhelming.

  135. The fathers, the princes, the commanders,

  136. the overseers gave gold and silver

  137. and brass and iron.

  138. Everyone who had precious stones

  139. gave them to Jehiel,

  140. the Wendy J of David's court.

  141. Those are the facts on the human level.

  142. There was an enormous generosity.

  143. The money came in.

  144. There was enough to build the temple.

  145. How do you account for that?

  146. Was David a charismatic leader?

  147. Were they just fearful of David?

  148. How do you account for this?

  149. David, at one level,

  150. David is not the least afraid of saying

  151. that the people did the giving.

  152. He stresses their wills

  153. were profoundly involved in the giving.

  154. Verse 9,

  155. The people rejoiced at the willing response

  156. of their leaders

  157. for they had given freely

  158. and wholeheartedly to the Lord.

  159. They were not coerced.

  160. They made choices.

  161. This is what anyone can see

  162. on a human level.

  163. But what matters on this day

  164. is not what the eye can see.

  165. What matters is the great,

  166. invisible reality of God

  167. on this day.

  168. And to help us to see that,

  169. what the writer of Chronicles does

  170. is he sort of pulls apart the curtains

  171. on David's prayer.

  172. David prays in such a way

  173. that he pulls apart the curtains

  174. to see what is really happening

  175. when the people of God

  176. give so generously.

  177. Back then

  178. and here today.

  179. What really happened

  180. was that God revealed himself

  181. to his people.

  182. So get this.

  183. The giving of money

  184. for the house of God

  185. was the work of God

  186. to reveal God

  187. so that the people of God

  188. would stand in awe of God.

  189. That's what's going on.

  190. I'll say it again

  191. given the confused, glazed looks

  192. that you all have.

  193. The giving of money

  194. for the house of God

  195. was the work of God

  196. to reveal God

  197. so that the people of God

  198. would stand in awe of God.

  199. That is what's revealed

  200. in David's prayer.

  201. That is what David sees

  202. and this is what he says

  203. he sees is happening

  204. on this day.

  205. Of course this is invisible.

  206. No camera could pick up God.

  207. No reporter could stick a microphone

  208. and ask him what's going on

  209. on this day.

  210. Technically there are no signs

  211. and wonders.

  212. There are no miracles

  213. but David says

  214. what has happened here today

  215. is all of God.

  216. And he mentions at least

  217. 11 things about God.

  218. 11 attributes of God

  219. which are being revealed

  220. in this enormous generosity

  221. in 1 Chronicles 29.

  222. Number one

  223. yours oh Lord

  224. is the greatness.

  225. That is God is great.

  226. He is expansive.

  227. He is larger than any reality

  228. in this universe.

  229. Number two

  230. yours oh Lord

  231. is the greatness

  232. and the power.

  233. God is powerful.

  234. All power belongs to God.

  235. He is not only big

  236. and expansive.

  237. He is also strong.

  238. He is stronger

  239. than any atomic power

  240. any hydrogen bomb

  241. any natural forces

  242. like hurricanes

  243. or ocean tides

  244. or an exploding stars.

  245. He is not only great

  246. in size

  247. but he can move

  248. that greatness

  249. to accomplish

  250. everything that he

  251. wills to accomplish.

  252. He is very powerful.

  253. Number three

  254. yours oh Lord

  255. is the greatness

  256. and the power

  257. and the glory

  258. and the splendor.

  259. God is glorious.

  260. In other words

  261. his greatness

  262. and his power

  263. come together

  264. to beauty.

  265. Not ugliness.

  266. It's beauty

  267. when God's greatness

  268. and power

  269. come together.

  270. When we see God

  271. for who he is

  272. our hearts

  273. our souls

  274. respond

  275. with a tremendous

  276. satisfaction

  277. because we were made

  278. to behold glory

  279. and splendor.

  280. We were made

  281. to exalt

  282. in infinite beauty.

  283. God is the source

  284. and the essence

  285. of all great

  286. and powerful beauty

  287. all glory

  288. and splendor.

  289. Number four

  290. yours oh Lord

  291. is the greatness

  292. and the power

  293. and the glory

  294. and the splendor

  295. and the majesty.

  296. He is majestic.

  297. This means that

  298. he has all the marks

  299. of royalty

  300. or kingliness.

  301. When he rides by

  302. you take off

  303. your hat

  304. and you salute.

  305. You don't slouch.

  306. You don't swagger.

  307. You don't joke.

  308. You don't jest.

  309. You stand in awe

  310. and you tremble

  311. with joy

  312. before this God.

  313. You tremble

  314. with joy

  315. that you have been

  316. granted to see him

  317. and not die.

  318. He is majestic.

  319. Yours oh Lord

  320. is the greatness

  321. and the power

  322. and the glory

  323. and the majesty

  324. and the splendor

  325. for everything

  326. in heaven

  327. and on earth

  328. is yours.

  329. God owns the world

  330. and he owns

  331. everything in it.

  332. He owns your home.

  333. He owns your car.

  334. He owns your television.

  335. He owns your blender.

  336. He owns your mind.

  337. He owns your emotions.

  338. He owns your will.

  339. He owns your very life.

  340. Everything

  341. is his.

  342. He owns your life.

  343. He owns your life.

  344. He owns your life.

  345. He owns your life.

  346. He gave it freely

  347. as a trust

  348. and he may take it

  349. whenever he chooses

  350. all of it

  351. or any of it

  352. and he would have done you

  353. no wrong.

  354. We are only trustees

  355. of life

  356. and thought

  357. and possessions.

  358. possessions.

  359. We are only trustees

  360. of life

  361. and thought

  362. and possessions.

  363. Just dwell on that

  364. for a little while

  365. and that will blow your mind

  366. inside out

  367. and upside down.

  368. We need to ponder that

  369. more than we do.

  370. Number six,

  371. yours,

  372. oh Lord,

  373. is the kingdom.

  374. In other words,

  375. he not only has

  376. the splendor of royalty,

  377. he has the authority

  378. of royalty.

  379. He actually rules

  380. as king over the world.

  381. He has dominion,

  382. ruling authority

  383. as king over all.

  384. His kingly decrees

  385. hold sway

  386. over all.

  387. Number seven,

  388. yours,

  389. oh Lord,

  390. is the kingdom.

  391. You are exalted

  392. as head over all.

  393. God is the head

  394. over all things.

  395. That is,

  396. he is the leader

  397. and he is the final authority

  398. over all things.

  399. God is not incidental

  400. or accidental

  401. over all.

  402. He chooses

  403. to be head

  404. over all.

  405. He exalts himself

  406. as head

  407. over all.

  408. His position

  409. in the universe

  410. is a position

  411. he chooses

  412. to keep.

  413. His reputation

  414. as head

  415. over all

  416. is something

  417. that he wills

  418. and desires

  419. to be known

  420. to the ends

  421. of the earth.

  422. Number eight,

  423. wealth and honour

  424. come from you.

  425. Not only does God

  426. own all things,

  427. rule all things,

  428. exalt himself

  429. as head

  430. over all things,

  431. he also is

  432. the source

  433. of all things,

  434. the source

  435. of all riches

  436. and honour

  437. that come

  438. to any man,

  439. woman or child.

  440. On a merely

  441. human standpoint,

  442. we look

  443. and we go,

  444. my riches

  445. and honour

  446. come because

  447. of my inheritance,

  448. because of some

  449. good willing

  450. and dealing

  451. on the stock market,

  452. some shrewd

  453. real estate dealings,

  454. I've saved

  455. some money,

  456. I've worked

  457. really hard,

  458. I've lived

  459. an honourable

  460. life,

  461. but David

  462. says riches

  463. come from God,

  464. all honour,

  465. any title

  466. that you have,

  467. any possessions

  468. that you have,

  469. all comes

  470. from God.

  471. That is the

  472. invisible work

  473. of God

  474. in and under

  475. and behind

  476. all of our

  477. daily work.

  478. Number nine,

  479. and linked with this,

  480. in your hands

  481. are strength

  482. and power

  483. to exalt

  484. and give

  485. strength to all.

  486. The new thing

  487. here is that

  488. all human

  489. greatness

  490. and all

  491. human strength

  492. are the work

  493. of God's

  494. invisible hand.

  495. It's all

  496. of God.

  497. The ability

  498. that I had

  499. to even comprehend

  500. what 1 Chronicles

  501. 29

  502. was doing

  503. and to put it

  504. into some

  505. form of a sermon

  506. was the work

  507. of God

  508. in my brain

  509. and in my heart.

  510. God's point

  511. in all of this,

  512. in this great

  513. generosity in Israel

  514. is to show

  515. that it is

  516. his hand

  517. that lies

  518. behind it

  519. and makes it

  520. great.

  521. Number ten,

  522. after pausing

  523. in verse 13

  524. to burst

  525. with thanks

  526. and praise

  527. for all of

  528. this stuff,

  529. David goes

  530. on with more

  531. about this

  532. great God

  533. who has

  534. been at work

  535. in his whole

  536. affair of giving

  537. and he says

  538. this about

  539. this great

  540. God,

  541. he is

  542. merciful.

  543. God helps

  544. us to do

  545. what we do

  546. not deserve

  547. help to do.

  548. Verse 14,

  549. but who am I

  550. and who are my

  551. people that we

  552. should be able

  553. to give

  554. as generously

  555. as this?

  556. everything

  557. comes from

  558. you

  559. and we

  560. have given

  561. you only

  562. what comes

  563. from your

  564. hand.

  565. In other

  566. words,

  567. God has

  568. enabled us

  569. to give

  570. like this

  571. is what

  572. David is

  573. saying.

  574. Even though

  575. we don't

  576. deserve the

  577. help that

  578. God has

  579. given to

  580. give like

  581. this.

  582. Who are

  583. we to be

  584. helped to

  585. give like

  586. this?

  587. St. Paul's

  588. Chatswood

  589. is a

  590. fellowship

  591. of

  592. graciously

  593. saved

  594. sinners.

  595. As

  596. verse 15,

  597. the second

  598. answer

  599. verse 15

  600. says,

  601. there is

  602. no hope

  603. for people

  604. like us

  605. outside of

  606. God's

  607. mercy to

  608. us in

  609. the Lord

  610. Jesus.

  611. No hope

  612. whatsoever.

  613. Nevertheless,

  614. God acts

  615. for us in

  616. mercy and

  617. behold we

  618. give because

  619. he has acted

  620. towards us

  621. in mercy.

  622. And so

  623. the 11th

  624. tribute to

  625. God in

  626. this matter

  627. of giving

  628. is that

  629. God is

  630. sovereignly

  631. merciful and

  632. he helps

  633. us give

  634. even though

  635. we don't

  636. deserve

  637. that help.

  638. And so

  639. just over

  640. 10 days

  641. ago,

  642. I told

  643. you last

  644. week,

  645. staff and

  646. parish council

  647. got together

  648. and they

  649. pledged

  650. $5,200 a

  651. week for

  652. 2010.

  653. And

  654. following on

  655. from the

  656. words of

  657. David,

  658. who are

  659. the staff

  660. of St.

  661. Paul's

  662. Chatswood?

  663. Who are

  664. the parish

  665. council of

  666. St.

  667. Paul's

  668. Chatswood

  669. that they

  670. could give

  671. $5,200 a

  672. week for

  673. next year?

  674. We are

  675. utterly

  676. undeserving.

  677. Yet from

  678. his hand

  679. we have

  680. given to

  681. him only

  682. what came

  683. from him

  684. because he

  685. is a

  686. merciful God.

  687. Number

  688. 11,

  689. finally,

  690. jumping down

  691. to verse

  692. 18,

  693. we see that

  694. God's

  695. enabling in

  696. this matter

  697. is not

  698. simply that

  699. he gives

  700. the funds

  701. but that

  702. he gives

  703. the willingness

  704. to give.

  705. This

  706. takes us

  707. back to

  708. where we

  709. started.

  710. Remember

  711. what we

  712. said about

  713. the people,

  714. the people

  715. did the

  716. giving.

  717. David even

  718. stresses the

  719. significant

  720. aspect of

  721. their will

  722. in that

  723. they were

  724. profoundly

  725. involved in

  726. the giving.

  727. Verse 9

  728. it says,

  729. the people

  730. rejoiced

  731. the willing

  732. response of

  733. their leaders

  734. for they

  735. had given

  736. freely and

  737. wholeheartedly

  738. to the

  739. Lord.

  740. That is,

  741. the people

  742. of Israel

  743. made choices.

  744. Human

  745. choices,

  746. real

  747. choices,

  748. joyful

  749. choices.

  750. That is

  751. what you

  752. can see.

  753. That is

  754. what all

  755. the people

  756. can see.

  757. It is

  758. obvious for

  759. us to

  760. see that

  761. but that

  762. is not

  763. all that

  764. David saw.

  765. What David

  766. saw and he

  767. makes known

  768. to us in

  769. the petition

  770. in verses

  771. 18 to

  772. 19,

  773. O Lord,

  774. God of

  775. our fathers

  776. Abraham,

  777. Isaac and

  778. Israel,

  779. keep this

  780. desire in

  781. their hearts

  782. of your

  783. people forever

  784. and keep

  785. their hearts

  786. loyal to

  787. you.

  788. And give

  789. my son

  790. Solomon the

  791. wholehearted

  792. devotion to

  793. keep your

  794. commands,

  795. requirements and

  796. decrees and

  797. to do

  798. everything to

  799. build this

  800. palatial structure

  801. for which I

  802. have provided.

  803. See what he's

  804. saying there?

  805. Where is

  806. Solomon going

  807. to get a

  808. heart to

  809. keep the

  810. commands of

  811. God?

  812. From God.

  813. David

  814. prayed in

  815. verse 19,

  816. give my

  817. son Solomon

  818. the

  819. wholehearted

  820. devotion to

  821. keep your

  822. commands and

  823. requirements and

  824. decrees.

  825. Friends,

  826. we ought to

  827. be praying for

  828. that.

  829. We ought to

  830. be praying

  831. that prayer.

  832. Give it to

  833. us,

  834. Lord,

  835. the wholehearted

  836. devotion to

  837. keep your

  838. commands,

  839. your

  840. requirements and

  841. decrees that

  842. we might

  843. generously give.

  844. And so that's

  845. what he says.

  846. What about

  847. these people

  848. here?

  849. What about

  850. those who

  851. had already

  852. given so

  853. generously?

  854. Those who

  855. says he,

  856. verse 9,

  857. had given

  858. freely and

  859. wholeheartedly.

  860. What does

  861. David pray for

  862. them?

  863. Verse 18,

  864. O Lord,

  865. keep this

  866. desire in

  867. their hearts

  868. of your

  869. people forever

  870. and keep

  871. their hearts

  872. loyal to

  873. you.

  874. This is not

  875. the end of

  876. the matter.

  877. We ought to

  878. be growing

  879. more and

  880. more in

  881. this matter.

  882. When a

  883. sinner directs

  884. his heart

  885. towards God,

  886. God has

  887. done that.

  888. Apart from

  889. God, our

  890. hearts will

  891. go in every

  892. direction.

  893. But God,

  894. apart from

  895. God, our

  896. hearts will

  897. go after

  898. everything

  899. apart from

  900. God.

  901. We will

  902. treasure

  903. anything else

  904. in this

  905. world apart

  906. from God.

  907. That is

  908. what is so

  909. crucial for

  910. us as a

  911. church to

  912. have treasure

  913. Jesus at

  914. the centre

  915. of our

  916. mission

  917. statement.

  918. We ought

  919. to be

  920. treasuring

  921. him more

  922. than

  923. anything

  924. else.

  925. And may

  926. God give

  927. us the

  928. hearts to

  929. pursue

  930. treasuring

  931. Jesus more

  932. than anything

  933. else.

  934. Apart from

  935. God, we

  936. do not

  937. give

  938. willingly and

  939. joyfully to

  940. the cause

  941. of God.

  942. That is

  943. why David

  944. prays.

  945. A prayer

  946. that is

  947. asking God

  948. to do

  949. what man

  950. cannot do.

  951. We cannot

  952. direct our

  953. hearts to

  954. God or

  955. give

  956. willingly to

  957. God unless

  958. God directs

  959. our hearts

  960. to himself

  961. and causes

  962. us to

  963. give

  964. willingly.

  965. I'm

  966. kind of

  967. hoping by

  968. now that

  969. you've

  970. picked that

  971. up from

  972. me in

  973. my

  974. preaching.

  975. As we've

  976. looked

  977. particularly

  978. at Luke's

  979. gospel and

  980. the travel

  981. narrative of

  982. what it means

  983. to walk

  984. with Jesus

  985. on this

  986. road to

  987. Jerusalem,

  988. I've been

  989. asking you

  990. give it up

  991. for the

  992. king.

  993. we live

  994. to treasure

  995. Jesus.

  996. And so

  997. now on

  998. Commitment

  999. Sunday,

  1000. now is

  1001. the time

  1002. for you to

  1003. consecrate

  1004. yourself to

  1005. the Lord.

  1006. If you

  1007. haven't already

  1008. do it,

  1009. to consecrate

  1010. yourself to

  1011. the Lord.

  1012. I do hope

  1013. that you

  1014. have considered

  1015. and prayed

  1016. and come

  1017. prepared with

  1018. your pledge

  1019. cards.

  1020. I do hope

  1021. that you've

  1022. done that,

  1023. you've worked

  1024. hard on that.

  1025. I believe

  1026. that your

  1027. leaders have

  1028. done that.

  1029. When parish

  1030. council and

  1031. staff met

  1032. together about

  1033. 10 days ago,

  1034. we went

  1035. through this

  1036. process.

  1037. We looked

  1038. at this

  1039. passage.

  1040. And I

  1041. believe that

  1042. this passage

  1043. is calling

  1044. me as the

  1045. point leader

  1046. of this

  1047. church to

  1048. lead as

  1049. King David

  1050. did.

  1051. And so

  1052. at parish

  1053. council meeting

  1054. with the

  1055. staff and

  1056. parish council

  1057. there about

  1058. 10 days ago,

  1059. I publicly

  1060. declared to

  1061. them what

  1062. the contribution

  1063. of Natalie

  1064. and I

  1065. would be,

  1066. what our

  1067. contribution

  1068. would be in

  1069. 2010.

  1070. I will be

  1071. the only

  1072. one publicly

  1073. to do so

  1074. and the

  1075. moment I

  1076. enjoy doing

  1077. it, I

  1078. will stop

  1079. doing it.

  1080. Up until

  1081. recently, we

  1082. have been

  1083. giving $500 a

  1084. month.

  1085. But as we've

  1086. walked with

  1087. Jesus to

  1088. Jerusalem, we

  1089. have been

  1090. rethinking our

  1091. contribution.

  1092. And so I

  1093. said to parish

  1094. council that we

  1095. would be

  1096. contributing $600

  1097. a month in

  1098. 2010, but I

  1099. asked them to

  1100. pray for us

  1101. that we might

  1102. reach $700 by

  1103. the end of

  1104. the year.

  1105. We have

  1106. since revised

  1107. that and it's

  1108. now $650 a

  1109. month.

  1110. We're starting

  1111. that right now,

  1112. $650 a month.

  1113. And so I'm

  1114. praying that, I'm

  1115. asking you to

  1116. pray for us that

  1117. we might reach

  1118. $750 by the

  1119. end of the

  1120. year, given

  1121. that my target

  1122. was so short.

  1123. And that is

  1124. specifically to

  1125. the ministry of

  1126. St Paul's

  1127. Chatswood.

  1128. That is to

  1129. our weekly

  1130. offertory here

  1131. for the

  1132. ministry of

  1133. St Paul's

  1134. Chatswood.

  1135. Our mission

  1136. giving and

  1137. our giving to

  1138. the poor will

  1139. be over and

  1140. above that.

  1141. And like the

  1142. target that I

  1143. want to set for

  1144. everyone here,

  1145. we are aiming

  1146. for dollar for

  1147. dollar.

  1148. I then called

  1149. the staff and

  1150. the parish

  1151. council to

  1152. follow suit.

  1153. And they

  1154. did.

  1155. $5,200 a

  1156. week was

  1157. pledged for

  1158. 2010.

  1159. $2,300 was

  1160. raised for the

  1161. external project

  1162. and over

  1163. 6,000 for

  1164. the internal

  1165. project.

  1166. They have

  1167. significantly

  1168. knocked those

  1169. figures off

  1170. already.

  1171. Your leaders

  1172. have led.

  1173. It was a

  1174. wonderful response

  1175. and I

  1176. rejoiced

  1177. greatly.

  1178. And I

  1179. now call

  1180. St Paul's

  1181. Chatswood

  1182. today to

  1183. follow your

  1184. leaders.

  1185. In a

  1186. moment we

  1187. are taking

  1188. up a

  1189. collection.

  1190. I'm hoping

  1191. that you've

  1192. come prepared

  1193. with your

  1194. pledge cards

  1195. if you

  1196. haven't.

  1197. I believe

  1198. Geoff's got

  1199. some.

  1200. There's

  1201. some at

  1202. the back.

  1203. But the

  1204. big question

  1205. I want to

  1206. leave you

  1207. with is

  1208. who here

  1209. today will

  1210. consecrate

  1211. themselves to

  1212. the Lord

  1213. in this

  1214. place in

  1215. Paul's

  1216. Chatswood.

  1217. Let's

  1218. pray.

  1219. Let's

  1220. pray.

  1221. Gracious

  1222. God,

  1223. merciful God,

  1224. all power

  1225. and authority

  1226. and glory

  1227. are yours.

  1228. You rule

  1229. over all

  1230. that is.

  1231. You own

  1232. everything in

  1233. this world.

  1234. You own

  1235. our lives,

  1236. our possessions.

  1237. Oh Lord,

  1238. we don't

  1239. recognise that

  1240. enough.

  1241. We thank you

  1242. for the life

  1243. that we have.

  1244. We thank you

  1245. for the strength

  1246. and the honour

  1247. that you have

  1248. given us to be

  1249. able to gather,

  1250. to work,

  1251. to save,

  1252. to earn.

  1253. Lord,

  1254. we sit here

  1255. today,

  1256. we reflect

  1257. even on what

  1258. the leaders

  1259. of this church

  1260. have done,

  1261. the staff,

  1262. the parish

  1263. council.

  1264. And as

  1265. David said

  1266. before Israel,

  1267. who is

  1268. Steve

  1269. Jeffrey?

  1270. Who are

  1271. the staff

  1272. of St.

  1273. Paul's

  1274. Chatswood?

  1275. Who are

  1276. the parish

  1277. council of

  1278. St.

  1279. Paul's

  1280. Chatswood?

  1281. Who are

  1282. the people

  1283. of St.

  1284. Paul's

  1285. Chatswood

  1286. that we

  1287. should

  1288. give so

  1289. generously

  1290. as this?

  1291. We only

  1292. give what

  1293. you have

  1294. already

  1295. given to

  1296. us.

  1297. And so

  1298. Lord,

  1299. rescue us

  1300. from hypocrisy.

  1301. Rescue us

  1302. Lord,

  1303. from anything

  1304. that would

  1305. want to

  1306. turn it

  1307. back on

  1308. ourselves.

  1309. May we

  1310. rejoice in

  1311. you and

  1312. your goodness

  1313. to us.

  1314. May we

  1315. do it

  1316. with honest

  1317. intent.

  1318. And we

  1319. ask it

  1320. for your

  1321. glory.

  1322. Amen.
