  1. Well, as Steve has said, we come to this psalm that we all know so well.

  2. It has thousands of articles written about it.

  3. It has thousands of images on Google.

  4. If you want to look at Google for the 23rd Psalm,

  5. beautiful pictures with all the words of the psalm that you can download.

  6. Actually, you can buy them.

  7. But in any case, you can see that there's many songs that are written about the 23rd Psalm.

  8. And it is the number one psalm that is preached at funerals.

  9. It is the most popular psalm, as Steve has mentioned.

  10. And so it is because of that, and it is because it is so familiar,

  11. I'm going to plead with you today that you put everything you know about this psalm aside.

  12. I want you to put it aside so that you can allow God to speak to you and to speak afresh to you.

  13. A psalm that has great richness in it.

  14. And let's ask the Lord to tell us something new.

  15. Okay, so let's pray with me.

  16. Or please pray with me.

  17. Our Father, we ask that by your Spirit, you will indeed speak to us.

  18. We thank you for this particular psalm.

  19. And Father, we ask that each and every one of us, including myself,

  20. will see new and fresh things about the Great Shepherd.

  21. Father, open our eyes and our hearts so that we would see you and be changed by you in Jesus' name.

  22. Amen.

  23. Okay, so it is a psalm that is written by David, as Steve has already said.

  24. It's in actual fact a song.

  25. I suspect David may have sung it, sitting under a tree.

  26. And David, as we know, knew a lot about shepherding because of his history as a shepherd boy.

  27. David knows that the shepherd is the one who watches over the sheep.

  28. He's the one who takes care of them.

  29. He's the one who protects them.

  30. He feeds them.

  31. He gives them water.

  32. And he gives every provision that is necessary for those sheep.

  33. And so with the majestic Lord of all that we've been listening to some fabulous sermons these last few weeks,

  34. this majestic one that we hold high, this one is given the character of a shepherd.

  35. I personally find that remarkable.

  36. I don't find it so remarkable that we are called sheep,

  37. but I find it pretty remarkable that the majestic one who is lifted high,

  38. that he is called a shepherd.

  39. Now, David compares himself with a sheep.

  40. As Steve has said, he's a creature who is weak.

  41. He's foolish.

  42. He's defenseless.

  43. He takes, but in this, he takes God as his provider.

  44. He takes God as his preserver, his director.

  45. And indeed, he takes God as his everything.

  46. But here's the thing.

  47. You see, I think that many, many people,

  48. and I think it's why 23rd Psalm is used in funerals so often,

  49. I actually think that everyone thinks that everyone is one of these sheep in this precious paddock

  50. where the Lord is the good shepherd.

  51. And we all know that there's many, many different paddocks out in the farming rural area,

  52. and not all the sheep belong to all the same shepherds.

  53. But I think people do think that.

  54. I think that we make the mistake of thinking we're all one of these sheep.

  55. But only those who can call the shepherd their full,

  56. to give the shepherd their ownership,

  57. that the shepherd owns them,

  58. that there is a total dependence upon this shepherd,

  59. only those sheep are the ones that we're talking about today.

  60. And David had this dependence,

  61. because he didn't say,

  62. I hope that the Lord will be my shepherd one day.

  63. He didn't say,

  64. the Lord is my shepherd only on a Sunday,

  65. and all the rest of the days,

  66. I can do it all by myself.

  67. He didn't say that.

  68. The Lord is my shepherd.

  69. He watches over me.

  70. And the word is in the present tense.

  71. That meaning that whatever a believer's position is right now,

  72. the great Jehovah,

  73. even now,

  74. is watching over each and every one of us.

  75. And it is because he knows that the great Jehovah

  76. is watching over him at all times,

  77. he can say,

  78. I shall not want.

  79. The Lord is my shepherd.

  80. I shall not want.

  81. When the Lord is over me and caring for me,

  82. there is nothing that I want except him alone.

  83. And he will provide all that is needed

  84. because his heart is full of love,

  85. and therefore,

  86. I shall not want.

  87. It means that I don't need to be wanting

  88. to match the money and the possessions

  89. of every other person that I look out and see.

  90. It means that if famine was to strike our land,

  91. and certainly in rural country areas,

  92. they have had it hard,

  93. and we have had a blessed time here in the city,

  94. or calamity was to strike our city,

  95. or when old age and the limitations

  96. that come with old age,

  97. when they strike,

  98. or the position of a great job is not forthcoming,

  99. or the life partner that I dream of

  100. doesn't seem to appear,

  101. I can even say in every one of those situations

  102. very confidently,

  103. I shall not want.

  104. And it is because the Lord is my shepherd.

  105. And it is only if the Lord is my shepherd.

  106. Those who do not know this shepherd,

  107. those who do not know the Lord,

  108. will always be left wanting.

  109. Always.

  110. And yet with this great shepherd,

  111. I shall not want.

  112. Because everything I need is found in him.

  113. He will care,

  114. he will provide for those he loves

  115. in ways that we cannot even dream of.

  116. So how dare we even think

  117. that something over there

  118. is going to be even better.

  119. He makes me lie down in green pastures,

  120. he leads me beside still waters.

  121. Now Charles Spurgeon,

  122. the great theologian,

  123. points out that the Christian life

  124. has two elements to it,

  125. the contemplative and the active.

  126. Now first the contemplative.

  127. He says is in this psalm,

  128. he makes me lie down in green pastures.

  129. Now what are the green pastures exactly?

  130. Well Spurgeon says that the green pastures

  131. are the scriptures of truth.

  132. It's God's word.

  133. Always fresh,

  134. always rich,

  135. never exhausted.

  136. sweet and full doctrines of the gospel.

  137. It's food for souls,

  138. just like the green pastures

  139. are nutrients for the sheep.

  140. When by faith we can rest

  141. in the promises of God,

  142. we are like the sheep

  143. who can rest in the pastures,

  144. finding peace,

  145. finding refreshment,

  146. safety,

  147. security

  148. and deep satisfaction.

  149. You see,

  150. a sheep will not lie down,

  151. my sheep owning friend told me this,

  152. I know nothing about sheep,

  153. but apparently,

  154. sheep will not lie down

  155. if they believe that they are in danger

  156. or they suspect that there's potential danger.

  157. They need to be on all fours

  158. so that they can quickly make haste

  159. and get away when the danger comes.

  160. But in confidence,

  161. these sheep,

  162. they're resting in complete security and comfort

  163. for they know and understand

  164. that the shepherd is nearby

  165. and the shepherd is actually going to protect them

  166. from every angle.

  167. David has been nourished

  168. by God's word

  169. and it is that that sustains him.

  170. He rests in the comfort

  171. that only God himself can satisfy.

  172. Now,

  173. spending time in God's word

  174. will nourish

  175. all of our souls.

  176. It will grow you

  177. in wisdom

  178. and discernment.

  179. It will correct

  180. and rebuke you

  181. where needed.

  182. It will constantly

  183. show you

  184. the glory

  185. and the majesty

  186. that we've been learning about

  187. all these weeks

  188. and it will cause you

  189. to surrender

  190. to him

  191. because all

  192. is already his.

  193. That's what happens

  194. when we spend time

  195. in God's word.

  196. Now,

  197. some of you may be

  198. distracted

  199. from the truth

  200. and so remain restless

  201. and find it impossible

  202. to lie down

  203. in those green pastures

  204. and if that is you today,

  205. I need to say to you,

  206. you need

  207. to seek

  208. the shepherd.

  209. You need

  210. to spend time

  211. in God's word.

  212. You need

  213. to be fed

  214. and you need

  215. to be nourished

  216. for that

  217. is what

  218. will be lacking

  219. in your life.

  220. I know

  221. personally

  222. that when

  223. my life

  224. goes

  225. off

  226. on the wrong track,

  227. I can immediately

  228. look and see

  229. how much time

  230. I am spending

  231. in God's word

  232. and I know

  233. that there is

  234. an absolute

  235. direct correlation

  236. between the two

  237. and I know

  238. there is many

  239. of you out

  240. there who

  241. think the same

  242. too.

  243. The second

  244. element of the

  245. Christian life

  246. that Spurgeon

  247. talks about

  248. is gracious

  249. activity.

  250. Now,

  251. we are not

  252. only to

  253. think

  254. but we are

  255. to act.

  256. We are not

  257. only to talk

  258. but we are

  259. to walk

  260. the talk.

  261. You know

  262. what I mean.

  263. You see,

  264. we have a real

  265. danger

  266. of just

  267. gathering

  268. heaps

  269. and heaps

  270. of head

  271. knowledge

  272. of the

  273. Bible

  274. and we

  275. do not

  276. walk

  277. the talk.

  278. Now,

  279. what is

  280. the point

  281. if we

  282. can find

  283. any verse

  284. at the drop

  285. of a hat,

  286. find all

  287. those little

  288. letters

  289. that we

  290. find in

  291. the Bible?

  292. We can

  293. go to

  294. them

  295. because we

  296. know our

  297. Bible so

  298. well.

  299. What is

  300. the point

  301. of being

  302. able to

  303. do that?

  304. What is

  305. the point

  306. of being

  307. able to

  308. discuss

  309. every

  310. theological

  311. debate

  312. and feel

  313. that you

  314. have come

  315. out a

  316. winner?

  317. What is

  318. the point

  319. of that

  320. if in

  321. fact you

  322. are not

  323. loving

  324. people as

  325. Christ wishes

  326. for you

  327. to love

  328. them?

  329. What is

  330. the point?

  331. See,

  332. the life

  333. we live

  334. needs to

  335. reflect the

  336. truths

  337. that we

  338. know.

  339. Otherwise,

  340. we run

  341. the risk

  342. of being

  343. in the

  344. pasture

  345. not as

  346. a sheep

  347. but as

  348. a wolf

  349. dressed as

  350. a sheep.

  351. And as

  352. you might

  353. know,

  354. scripture

  355. tells us

  356. that Jesus

  357. will be

  358. coming back

  359. and he

  360. will call

  361. his sheep

  362. to himself

  363. and there

  364. will be

  365. many who

  366. say,

  367. Lord,

  368. Lord,

  369. and Jesus

  370. will turn

  371. and say,

  372. I never

  373. knew you.

  374. I do

  375. not want

  376. for any

  377. person in

  378. this building

  379. today to

  380. be one of

  381. them.

  382. I want

  383. you to

  384. be the

  385. sheep that

  386. calls out

  387. and Jesus

  388. welcomes

  389. you with

  390. open arms.

  391. Now,

  392. in our

  393. living

  394. out this

  395. walk,

  396. we are

  397. slowly

  398. being

  399. changed

  400. to reflect

  401. the character

  402. of Jesus.

  403. Not for

  404. our own

  405. sake,

  406. but for

  407. the Lord's

  408. and for

  409. his glory

  410. and for

  411. his majesty.

  412. And we're

  413. all in a

  414. process of

  415. change.

  416. None of

  417. us have

  418. arrived and

  419. none of

  420. us will

  421. until

  422. heaven,

  423. but we're

  424. all in a

  425. process of

  426. change that

  427. the Lord

  428. will give

  429. us.

  430. change.

  431. We are

  432. to expect

  433. change in

  434. ourselves and

  435. we are to

  436. expect change

  437. in others.

  438. The angry

  439. person that

  440. comes to

  441. the shepherd

  442. cannot expect

  443. to continue

  444. to get away

  445. with being

  446. angry.

  447. Sure,

  448. change doesn't

  449. happen overnight,

  450. but it does

  451. happen when we

  452. allow the

  453. Holy Spirit

  454. to touch our

  455. lives, to

  456. minister to

  457. us, to

  458. convict us

  459. of sin,

  460. and then

  461. helps us

  462. to become

  463. the person

  464. God wants

  465. us to

  466. be.

  467. The one

  468. with a

  469. critical spirit

  470. cannot expect

  471. to be allowed

  472. to continue

  473. exercising the

  474. negative traits

  475. if the Lord

  476. is their

  477. shepherd.

  478. That person

  479. would be, on

  480. the other

  481. hand, be

  482. grieved at

  483. the criticism

  484. and be asking

  485. the Lord to

  486. help them see

  487. all that is

  488. right and

  489. pure and

  490. honourable,

  491. all of that

  492. that is around

  493. them every day,

  494. every moment.

  495. The person

  496. who says

  497. that the

  498. Lord is my

  499. shepherd and

  500. yet is

  501. totally self-centred

  502. needs to

  503. actively seek

  504. what the

  505. Lord would

  506. have them

  507. do to be

  508. other person

  509. centred and

  510. to start

  511. serving.

  512. But the

  513. great news

  514. for all of

  515. that, and

  516. we all have

  517. our own

  518. little quirks

  519. that need

  520. changing,

  521. they're just

  522. a couple of

  523. the common

  524. ones, but

  525. we all have

  526. it, me

  527. included.

  528. But the

  529. great news

  530. is that we

  531. are not

  532. alone.

  533. See, the

  534. Holy Spirit

  535. is there

  536. graciously leading

  537. all of us

  538. by those

  539. still waters

  540. to minister

  541. to us, to

  542. change us, to

  543. renew us, but

  544. he will do it

  545. quietly and he

  546. will do it

  547. gently.

  548. And we

  549. cannot change

  550. ourselves and

  551. we cannot be

  552. the one who

  553. takes ourselves

  554. along the

  555. still waters.

  556. But with an

  557. open and

  558. willing heart,

  559. we can be

  560. led, we

  561. can be ministered

  562. to and we

  563. can be

  564. changed.

  565. He restores

  566. my soul.

  567. At some

  568. stage in our

  569. life, we

  570. have all

  571. been in

  572. the place

  573. where our

  574. soul needs

  575. restoring.

  576. The great

  577. news is, when

  578. our soul grows

  579. sorrowful, he

  580. revives it.

  581. When it is

  582. sinful, he

  583. sanctifies it

  584. and makes it

  585. whole.

  586. When it is

  587. weak, he

  588. strengthens it.

  589. he does

  590. it, the

  591. shepherd.

  592. He restores

  593. my soul and

  594. so I need

  595. to stop and

  596. ask you, does

  597. your soul need

  598. restoring today?

  599. Is your

  600. spiritual life

  601. at a low

  602. ebb?

  603. Because if it

  604. is, you need

  605. to ask the

  606. great shepherd

  607. to restore

  608. it.

  609. don't leave

  610. here today

  611. feeling lost

  612. and empty

  613. and downtrodden.

  614. And we can

  615. confidently ask

  616. the great shepherd

  617. because as we

  618. can see, he

  619. is the one who

  620. guides us in

  621. paths of

  622. righteousness for

  623. his name's

  624. sake.

  625. Now it is

  626. the one who

  627. can truly say

  628. the Lord is

  629. my shepherd

  630. that will

  631. follow the

  632. leading that

  633. the Lord

  634. gives.

  635. And we

  636. do that

  637. because we

  638. love the

  639. master, we

  640. love the

  641. shepherd.

  642. We cannot

  643. pick and

  644. choose which

  645. parts of the

  646. commandments we

  647. want to

  648. follow.

  649. We cannot

  650. ask the

  651. Lord to

  652. grow us

  653. into the

  654. people he

  655. desires us

  656. to be but

  657. to say,

  658. but please

  659. don't touch

  660. this part of

  661. my life over

  662. here because

  663. that bit's

  664. for me to

  665. take control

  666. of.

  667. What we

  668. come to the

  669. shepherd and

  670. we ask the

  671. shepherd to

  672. change absolutely

  673. every part of

  674. our life to

  675. his glory.

  676. When the

  677. Lord is our

  678. shepherd we

  679. allow leading

  680. to occur because

  681. it will lead to

  682. righteous living

  683. because of

  684. God's love for

  685. each and every

  686. one of us.

  687. And we need

  688. changing, we

  689. need to be

  690. made new, we

  691. need a saviour to

  692. deal with our

  693. sin and we

  694. have one and

  695. the leading

  696. occurs for his

  697. name's sake,

  698. not for our

  699. own.

  700. Even though I

  701. walk through the

  702. valley of the

  703. shadow of

  704. death, I

  705. will fear no

  706. evil for thy

  707. rod and thy

  708. staff, they

  709. comfort me.

  710. This verse has

  711. always challenged

  712. me because it

  713. does not say

  714. if you go

  715. through the

  716. valley of the

  717. shadow of

  718. death.

  719. It actually

  720. says when.

  721. There is an

  722. expectation that

  723. there are tough

  724. times and that

  725. we're going to

  726. go through

  727. that valley.

  728. That's a

  729. given.

  730. That's not a

  731. surprise.

  732. We should never

  733. be surprised when

  734. tough times come.

  735. It's a given.

  736. Now many of

  737. you actually

  738. know, have

  739. known fear and

  740. many choose to

  741. live with fear of

  742. going through the

  743. tough times,

  744. whatever they may

  745. be.

  746. But might I

  747. say I actually

  748. do not believe

  749. that for

  750. somebody who

  751. is saying that

  752. they follow the

  753. Lord as their

  754. shepherd, that

  755. indeed living with

  756. fear is possible

  757. or that it is

  758. allowed or that

  759. it is correct.

  760. It's not okay

  761. because it

  762. reflects a

  763. lack of trust in

  764. the shepherd for

  765. all things.

  766. Now there's a

  767. word in this

  768. particular verse

  769. that excited

  770. me and that

  771. word is the

  772. word shadow.

  773. This is a new

  774. revelation for

  775. me.

  776. You see, what

  777. dawned on me is

  778. that a shadow

  779. cannot harm you.

  780. It says that we

  781. go through the

  782. valley of the

  783. shadow of death

  784. and what I also

  785. learned is that

  786. where there is a

  787. shadow, there is

  788. always light.

  789. light.

  790. There is light to

  791. cast the shadow

  792. and I love

  793. that.

  794. I love knowing

  795. that there is

  796. light because it

  797. is the light of

  798. the shepherd that

  799. is being cast.

  800. See, a shadow

  801. of a dog cannot

  802. bite you, a

  803. shadow of a

  804. sword cannot

  805. kill you, and

  806. the shadow of

  807. death cannot

  808. destroy us.

  809. So let us

  810. not be afraid.

  811. There is light

  812. and the light is

  813. the one who is

  814. with me.

  815. That is, I have

  816. a perfect comfort

  817. and security because

  818. the Lord is with

  819. me in any and

  820. every situation

  821. if he is my

  822. shepherd.

  823. And now finally

  824. we come to the

  825. last two verses

  826. and we change

  827. from a pastoral

  828. scene and we go

  829. to a banqueting

  830. scene.

  831. You prepare a

  832. table before me

  833. in the presence

  834. of my enemies.

  835. You anoint my

  836. head with oil.

  837. My cup overflows.

  838. Now many of us

  839. would like to

  840. think that we

  841. have no enemies.

  842. I'd like to

  843. think I have no

  844. enemies.

  845. But if we are

  846. aligned with

  847. Jesus, we have

  848. many enemies

  849. for the world

  850. hates God

  851. and the world

  852. will hate

  853. those who

  854. belong to God.

  855. But there is a

  856. calmness in front

  857. of the enemies

  858. here.

  859. Nothing is

  860. hurried.

  861. There is no

  862. confusion, no

  863. disturbance.

  864. The enemy is

  865. at the door

  866. and yet God

  867. is preparing a

  868. table and the

  869. psalmist sits

  870. down and eats

  871. as if everything

  872. is at perfect

  873. peace.

  874. Is this your

  875. life?

  876. It's a

  877. picture of

  878. peace.

  879. Is your

  880. life a

  881. picture of

  882. peace at

  883. this moment

  884. in time?

  885. Have you

  886. ever tried to

  887. eat when

  888. you're worried

  889. or you're

  890. sick at heart

  891. or you're

  892. feeling heavy

  893. at heart

  894. or you're

  895. afraid?

  896. For some

  897. reason, food

  898. loses its

  899. attraction when

  900. we're worried

  901. and when we're

  902. afraid.

  903. Our stomachs

  904. are taut,

  905. our adrenaline

  906. sort of goes

  907. sky high and

  908. the last thing

  909. our bodies

  910. want to do

  911. when we're

  912. afraid is to

  913. sit down and

  914. eat something.

  915. That's why

  916. people lose

  917. their appetite

  918. when danger

  919. is present.

  920. But the one

  921. who has the

  922. Lord as their

  923. shepherd is at

  924. peace in all

  925. things.

  926. You anoint my

  927. head with oil

  928. and my cup

  929. overflows.

  930. If only we all

  931. lived in this

  932. daily enjoyment

  933. of this

  934. blessing,

  935. receiving a

  936. fresh anointing

  937. for our

  938. everyday duties,

  939. day by day

  940. we all need

  941. to go to

  942. God to be

  943. refreshed by

  944. his spirit,

  945. to live the

  946. day under

  947. the Lordship

  948. of Jesus,

  949. to be refreshed,

  950. to be renewed

  951. by God alone

  952. for we cannot

  953. do this in

  954. our own

  955. strength.

  956. But we are

  957. not left

  958. alone.

  959. we have

  960. God's

  961. spirit to

  962. daily empower

  963. us to be

  964. who God

  965. wants us

  966. to be.

  967. So can

  968. you say

  969. your cup

  970. overflows,

  971. that you

  972. are abundantly

  973. and lavishly

  974. filled with

  975. the love,

  976. the mercy,

  977. the protection,

  978. the forgiveness,

  979. the renewal

  980. of the Lord

  981. that the Lord

  982. offers you?

  983. Can you say

  984. that?

  985. Or are you

  986. quietly grumbling

  987. to yourself

  988. on the side

  989. that you

  990. deserve more,

  991. that you

  992. deserve things

  993. to go your

  994. way?

  995. For whoever

  996. is discontented

  997. in anything

  998. whatsoever

  999. cannot say,

  1000. my cup

  1001. overflows.

  1002. I'll say it

  1003. again for you.

  1004. Whoever

  1005. is discontented

  1006. in anything

  1007. at all

  1008. in life

  1009. cannot say,

  1010. my cup

  1011. overflows.

  1012. Surely

  1013. goodness and

  1014. love will

  1015. follow me

  1016. all the days

  1017. of my life

  1018. and I will

  1019. dwell in the

  1020. house of the

  1021. Lord forever.

  1022. Goodness and

  1023. love here are

  1024. like guardian

  1025. angels that

  1026. follow every

  1027. believer

  1028. everywhere they

  1029. go,

  1030. through the

  1031. dark times

  1032. and through

  1033. the bright

  1034. days.

  1035. God is

  1036. more than

  1037. a God

  1038. who provides,

  1039. he is more

  1040. than a God

  1041. who protects,

  1042. he is a God

  1043. that makes

  1044. all of our

  1045. life,

  1046. both present

  1047. and future,

  1048. a wonderful

  1049. thing.

  1050. He is a God

  1051. of promise.

  1052. And Jesus

  1053. spoke of

  1054. having and

  1055. giving an

  1056. abundant life.

  1057. He says,

  1058. I have come

  1059. so that you

  1060. may have life

  1061. and have it

  1062. more abundantly.

  1063. That's what

  1064. David is

  1065. describing when

  1066. he says,

  1067. surely goodness

  1068. and mercy

  1069. shall follow

  1070. me all the

  1071. days of my

  1072. life.

  1073. With God

  1074. by our

  1075. side,

  1076. life is

  1077. good.

  1078. Our lives

  1079. are fulfilled

  1080. in ways that

  1081. we cannot

  1082. even begin

  1083. to imagine.

  1084. Not the

  1085. fullness of

  1086. possessions,

  1087. not the

  1088. abundance of

  1089. things,

  1090. but the

  1091. abundance of

  1092. God,

  1093. God's love,

  1094. God's peace,

  1095. God's joy,

  1096. God's goodness.

  1097. And I

  1098. can guarantee

  1099. you,

  1100. if you

  1101. have these

  1102. things and

  1103. nothing else,

  1104. you are

  1105. infinitely more

  1106. rich than if

  1107. you had all

  1108. the material

  1109. prosperity that

  1110. the world has

  1111. to offer.

  1112. But there's

  1113. more to this

  1114. psalm than

  1115. this present

  1116. earthly existence.

  1117. The shepherd's

  1118. psalm reminds

  1119. us that God

  1120. has prepared

  1121. for us a

  1122. marvellous

  1123. future, an

  1124. eternal

  1125. security, a

  1126. heavenly home.

  1127. Now many

  1128. people have

  1129. an uncertain

  1130. hope of

  1131. eternity.

  1132. I can tell

  1133. you for all

  1134. the people I

  1135. have asked

  1136. over the

  1137. years, many,

  1138. many people

  1139. will say, if

  1140. I ask, are

  1141. you certain of

  1142. heaven, they

  1143. will say, I

  1144. hope so.

  1145. Or maybe.

  1146. But these

  1147. words of

  1148. Psalm 23,

  1149. they're not a

  1150. vague expression

  1151. of uncertainty.

  1152. They are a

  1153. declaration of

  1154. certainty, a

  1155. confidence that

  1156. God has

  1157. provided a

  1158. glorious future

  1159. and an

  1160. eternal home

  1161. for us.

  1162. David doesn't

  1163. say, I hope

  1164. to be there.

  1165. He says, I

  1166. will be there.

  1167. And in the

  1168. New Testament,

  1169. the reason for

  1170. our confidence

  1171. is made clear.

  1172. Paul said, it

  1173. is not by

  1174. works you

  1175. are saved.

  1176. Lest any

  1177. man should

  1178. boast, it

  1179. is by grace.

  1180. What is

  1181. this grace

  1182. of God?

  1183. It is God,

  1184. it is the

  1185. God who

  1186. loved the

  1187. world, who

  1188. gave his

  1189. only son that

  1190. whoever believes

  1191. in him should

  1192. not perish but

  1193. have everlasting

  1194. life.

  1195. It is through

  1196. Christ's death on

  1197. the cross that

  1198. our sins are

  1199. forgiven.

  1200. It is through

  1201. his resurrection

  1202. from the grave

  1203. that we are

  1204. given an

  1205. assurance of

  1206. eternal life.

  1207. And it is

  1208. through faith in

  1209. what God has

  1210. done in

  1211. Jesus Christ

  1212. that we

  1213. receive this

  1214. precious promise.

  1215. And when we

  1216. come to God

  1217. in faith,

  1218. trusting in

  1219. his provision,

  1220. depending on

  1221. his protection,

  1222. we know that

  1223. we can rely

  1224. upon his

  1225. promise.

  1226. And with the

  1227. assurance of

  1228. faith, we

  1229. can declare

  1230. our confidence

  1231. as well.

  1232. And with

  1233. this, we

  1234. can also say

  1235. the Lord is

  1236. my shepherd,

  1237. I shall not

  1238. want.

  1239. Amen.
