  1. Friends, as we were singing that last song, it's one of those moments where you'd like to just sort of frame in history and pause there.

  2. I thought it was a wonderful testimony to unity in the gospel.

  3. This sermon will not be translated.

  4. It will, for those in Chinese who cannot understand a word I'm saying right now, it will actually be projected on the screen.

  5. So it will be full text on the screen, except for the changes that I made this morning.

  6. So please bear with me on that one.

  7. Let's pray.

  8. Father God, I pray that your word will come alive to us this morning.

  9. We ask, Father, that your spirit will come in a fresh way and that you will revive our souls so that we might say with the Apostle Paul,

  10. to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  11. Father, unite us in partnership around the gospel of grace, we pray.

  12. In Jesus' name.

  13. Amen.

  14. Late in the evening of the 24th of June, 1982, British Airways Flight 9, a Boeing 747-200 was flying high, very high, over Indonesia.

  15. What the pilots couldn't see on the radar was a cloud of volcanic ash up ahead in their flight path.

  16. Earlier, Mount Gowlingung had erupted 150 kilometres north of their flight path.

  17. And all of a sudden, smoke started to fill the cabin.

  18. And those with a window seat noticed that the engines were, and I quote, unusually bright.

  19. Then, without warning, number four engines stopped.

  20. One minute later, number two engines stopped, followed quickly by engines one and three.

  21. The 747 was now what you call technically a glider.

  22. For 16 minutes, this plane fell out of the sky.

  23. In the eerie silence, people knew that they were going to die.

  24. Can you imagine the sort of things that were going through their minds for 16 minutes

  25. as they gradually fell to the ground?

  26. People started writing notes to loved ones on napkins.

  27. They started to, in fact, talk to the people that they had ignored for the rest of the flight.

  28. They prayed.

  29. And a strange feeling came across the plane.

  30. They accepted that life was over.

  31. Because of the lack of oxygen in the cabin, the pilots took the unusual step of making it quicker for everyone

  32. and put the plane in a nosedive to get to a lower level so that people could breathe again.

  33. That manoeuvre had the added benefit of unclogging the engines of volcanic ash,

  34. and the engines were able to be restarted.

  35. Can you imagine the excitement as the engines kicked back in,

  36. the plane climbed and eventually landed at a nearby airport?

  37. The passengers thought they were dead, but they were alive.

  38. They had a new lease on life.

  39. They ended up actually forming a survivor's club.

  40. It is known as the Mount Galangang Gliding Club.

  41. They get together annually on the date of that flight,

  42. and they celebrate life together.

  43. One 81-year-old passenger said that on that night,

  44. she learnt to count every day as a blessing.

  45. She'd never before had a second chance on life.

  46. And that's what you've got if you've met Jesus.

  47. If you're a Christian, you've got a second chance on life,

  48. a new lease on life, a reason to really live,

  49. and it's a life that is enjoyed with other Christians.

  50. The Apostle Paul, the one who wrote this letter to the church in Philippi,

  51. he got a second chance when he met Jesus.

  52. He was a blasphemer, a persecutor of Christians,

  53. an opponent of the advancement of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  54. even to the point of giving his assent to the murder of Christians.

  55. But make no mistake, he was religious.

  56. He was zealous.

  57. He was pious.

  58. He was devout.

  59. And he was faultless in legalistic righteousness,

  60. as we will discover in a few weeks.

  61. Then he met Jesus.

  62. And his life was radically changed.

  63. A complete turnaround.

  64. He who was persecutor has become the persecuted.

  65. He who trusted in himself, his religious activity,

  66. and his heritage,

  67. now trusts in Jesus

  68. and pursues God's glory no matter what.

  69. And he calls the Philippians

  70. to have the same perspective on life as him.

  71. And he calls us to have the same perspective of life.

  72. And it's right there in verse 27.

  73. Whatever happens,

  74. conduct yourselves in a matter worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  75. And this is what this commitment series is all about.

  76. We are called to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  77. This commitment series is about reminding us who we are in Christ

  78. and what we are called to be.

  79. We are called to live in such a way

  80. as to show the worth of the value of the gospel.

  81. We are called to reveal to this world

  82. that we prize the Lord Jesus

  83. more than anything else in this world.

  84. We are called to show that our treasure is not in this world.

  85. Our hope is not in money and earthly security.

  86. Our satisfaction is not in power and prestige.

  87. Our contentment is not in the approval of others.

  88. And our happiness is not in avoiding criticism and slander.

  89. Instead, our treasure and hope and satisfaction

  90. and contentment and happiness

  91. are in Christ and his promises.

  92. Broadly speaking, I believe that what Philippians calls us to be

  93. is what he stated in our mission statement.

  94. We exist to know Jesus,

  95. to treasure Jesus,

  96. and represent Jesus for God's glory

  97. and the joy of all people.

  98. As we go through Philippians in the coming weeks,

  99. Paul will spell out for us

  100. what it means to live a life worthy of the gospel.

  101. And two broad themes keep popping up

  102. and are introduced here in chapter 1.

  103. Firstly, unity.

  104. And secondly, courageous sacrifice and service.

  105. In one sense, these two things

  106. will always be a challenge for us and for God's people.

  107. They will always need to be spoken of

  108. and they will always need to be pursued.

  109. But having said that,

  110. I don't want us to lose the urgency

  111. of them for us right now as a church here.

  112. I have spent the best part of my 18 months here

  113. working towards getting us heading in the same direction.

  114. And it's been painful for me and for some of you.

  115. There has been pain with the turnover in staff,

  116. adjustment to structures,

  117. the changing of ministry operations.

  118. Ironically, the divisions and difficulties

  119. have the goal of unity.

  120. One of the main confronting issues

  121. has been the siloing of ministry.

  122. Many good things happening,

  123. but not necessarily heading in the same direction

  124. with the same purpose

  125. or even in reference to anyone else or anything else.

  126. Vision 2020 was launched almost a year ago

  127. to give us a common direction and purpose as a church.

  128. The second thing that is so pertinent to us right now

  129. is the biblical teaching of radical,

  130. God-centered, wartime, risk-taking lifestyle

  131. for this is what God has called us to be as his people.

  132. It has been nearly 12 months since Vision 2020 was launched

  133. and we've had time to get used to it

  134. and now it is time to start stirring each other up

  135. to take some risks in more venturesome acts of love

  136. and evangelism and discipleship.

  137. We need to break out of deeply ingrained habits

  138. of timidity and silence and fear.

  139. We need to be set free from long-established anxieties

  140. of ruffling feathers and being slandered

  141. because too much is at stake for people in Chatswood.

  142. My prayer is that as we go through Philippians

  143. in this commitment series,

  144. we will see our partnership in the gospel

  145. and we will courageously sacrifice and serve

  146. in order to see the gospel advance among us and beyond us.

  147. So firstly, let's look at the issue of unity.

  148. I find it astounding that Paul would write these words

  149. at the beginning of Philippians, verse 3.

  150. I thank my God every time I remember you

  151. in all of my prayers for all of you.

  152. I always pray with joy because of your partnership

  153. in the gospel from the first day until now.

  154. Let us not forget that the one who writes these words

  155. is the same one who was chosen by God

  156. to take the gospel to the nations.

  157. He planted church after church.

  158. He wrote about one third of the New Testament

  159. and suffered more for the gospel than I could ever imagine.

  160. Do you feel the impact of what Paul has written there

  161. in those verses?

  162. The word he chooses to describe his relationship

  163. with this church is partnership.

  164. Partners.

  165. It's a business word that refers to a shared endeavour

  166. that holds two parties together.

  167. Even separated by prison,

  168. Paul uses this word to describe

  169. the shared identity and purpose that they have.

  170. I find it astounding that he would use this word

  171. because if anyone has the right to talk about rights,

  172. it would be Paul.

  173. If anyone has the credibility to elevate himself

  174. over other Christians and demand more,

  175. it would have to be Paul.

  176. If anyone could say that he is more equal

  177. than anyone else, it would have to be Paul.

  178. Instead, he calls this church at Philippi

  179. a church that he founded his partners

  180. from the very first day.

  181. Not after you've learned a thing or two.

  182. Not after you've been a Christian for a number of years.

  183. Not once the church has got its governance

  184. and ministry structures firmly established.

  185. Not once, Church of Philippi,

  186. you send out a few missionaries.

  187. From the very first day,

  188. you are my partners in the gospel.

  189. How can the great apostle Paul say that

  190. about this church at Philippi?

  191. Verse 7 gives us the answer.

  192. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you

  193. since I have you in my heart.

  194. For whether I'm in chains or defending

  195. and confirming the gospel,

  196. all of you share in God's grace with me.

  197. Their partnership with Paul began

  198. from the very first day

  199. because it says in verse 7,

  200. all of you share in God's grace with me.

  201. Paul doesn't demand more rights

  202. because of his longevity in the faith,

  203. because of his commitment to the church,

  204. his commitment to the gospel,

  205. or because of his effectiveness

  206. as a gospel worker.

  207. Grace means it's a level playing field.

  208. One of the clearest pictures of this

  209. in the New Testament

  210. is the parable of the workers of the vineyard

  211. in Matthew 20.

  212. In the parable,

  213. a farmer hires men

  214. at different times during the day.

  215. We are told that he hires them

  216. early in the morning,

  217. the third hour,

  218. the sixth hour,

  219. the ninth hour,

  220. right at the end of the day

  221. in the eleventh hour.

  222. And those who began early in the morning

  223. agreed to do a day's work

  224. for denarius.

  225. That was a good wage

  226. for a worker

  227. and was considered

  228. to be what was needed

  229. to provide well

  230. for their family.

  231. So don't let this point

  232. slip you past.

  233. They all,

  234. including those who started work

  235. at the beginning of the day,

  236. they all received

  237. not what they had earned,

  238. but what they needed.

  239. They were all paid

  240. according to grace,

  241. not according to debt.

  242. And the twist comes

  243. at the end of the day

  244. when they all line up

  245. to get paid

  246. and they all get the same.

  247. They all get a denarius.

  248. Everyone gets the same pay.

  249. No matter how long

  250. they had been out there

  251. in the paddock,

  252. they all get a denarius.

  253. Every worker got what they needed,

  254. not what they had earned.

  255. And, of course,

  256. those who'd been working

  257. the longest

  258. started to grumble.

  259. Hang on a bit,

  260. we've been out there all day.

  261. Shouldn't we get two?

  262. And in a sense,

  263. the workers are right,

  264. it's not fair

  265. what the boss is doing.

  266. But I think that's the point.

  267. Since when is grace

  268. ever about being fair?

  269. It's about me getting

  270. what I don't deserve

  271. and being rescued

  272. from what I do deserve.

  273. The truth about God's grace

  274. is not just a truth

  275. that applies

  276. when you first become a Christian.

  277. It's not just a truth

  278. that is something to say

  279. about salvation.

  280. It is an amazing truth

  281. and reality

  282. that is the very foundation

  283. of how Jesus deals

  284. with us day by day

  285. and how we are to deal

  286. with each other

  287. day by day.

  288. None of us needs

  289. anything less

  290. than God's grace

  291. and none of us needs

  292. anything more

  293. than God's grace.

  294. We all need a denarius,

  295. so to speak.

  296. We are all beggars

  297. at the foot of the cross.

  298. We were when we started

  299. as a Christian

  300. and we are to still be there

  301. 50, 60, 70, 80,

  302. however many years

  303. God allows you

  304. in this world.

  305. Nothing ever changes.

  306. The thing that unites us

  307. is not our culture,

  308. not our tradition,

  309. not our history,

  310. not our preferences,

  311. not our language.

  312. It is our desperate,

  313. desperate need

  314. for the grace

  315. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  316. from the very first day

  317. until the last.

  318. It is this grace

  319. that unites Paul,

  320. the great apostle,

  321. with the Philippian church

  322. that he founded.

  323. It would seem

  324. that in the church

  325. at Philippi

  326. there were a few people

  327. struggling

  328. to get on

  329. with each other.

  330. There was a bit

  331. of wrong teaching

  332. kicking around.

  333. There were some difficulties

  334. with persecution

  335. and it was getting them down.

  336. The joy of Christian discipleship

  337. wasn't so evident

  338. in this church,

  339. although Paul

  340. significantly rejoices

  341. with this church.

  342. And so it's not surprising,

  343. therefore,

  344. that Philippians

  345. is a book

  346. that talks about

  347. the gospel

  348. more than any other

  349. New Testament book.

  350. Paul wants us

  351. to discover

  352. how much

  353. of a difference

  354. a relationship

  355. with Jesus

  356. makes to our lives.

  357. Paul wants

  358. to encourage them

  359. by putting them

  360. back to Jesus

  361. to help them

  362. to keep on going,

  363. to stand firm

  364. and to put all

  365. the issues

  366. and difficulties

  367. in the light

  368. of the really

  369. important news

  370. of the gospel

  371. of the grace

  372. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  373. Christ.

  374. The differences

  375. that cause

  376. divisions

  377. are always,

  378. always,

  379. always,

  380. always

  381. less

  382. than which unites

  383. us,

  384. the grace

  385. of the Lord

  386. Jesus Christ.

  387. The grace

  388. of the Lord

  389. Jesus

  390. has completely

  391. transformed Paul.

  392. It changes

  393. the way

  394. Paul sees

  395. other Christians.

  396. It wasn't

  397. long ago

  398. that Paul

  399. was persecuting

  400. Christians,

  401. putting them

  402. into jail,

  403. but now,

  404. verse 4,

  405. because of your

  406. partnership

  407. in the gospel

  408. from the first

  409. day until now,

  410. they are my

  411. partners,

  412. Paul says.

  413. They are not

  414. my competitors.

  415. they are not

  416. my subjects.

  417. They are my

  418. partners.

  419. Is this how

  420. you see

  421. your relationship

  422. with your

  423. brothers and

  424. sisters here

  425. at St.

  426. Paul's?

  427. Just have a

  428. look around.

  429. Is this how

  430. you view

  431. your relationship

  432. with your

  433. brothers and

  434. sisters here

  435. at St.

  436. Paul's?

  437. Do you

  438. see them

  439. as your

  440. partners

  441. at the foot

  442. of the cross

  443. in the gospel

  444. of the Lord

  445. Jesus Christ,

  446. dependent upon

  447. his grace

  448. as much as

  449. they,

  450. as much as

  451. you?

  452. Note, too,

  453. that when Paul

  454. talks about

  455. partnership,

  456. he's not

  457. merely tolerating

  458. the Christian

  459. church here

  460. at Philippi.

  461. He is also

  462. not giving

  463. a mere

  464. intellectual

  465. assent

  466. to the

  467. theological

  468. correctness

  469. of

  470. partnership.

  471. Verse 4,

  472. in all my

  473. prayers for

  474. all of you,

  475. I always

  476. pray with

  477. joy.

  478. Verse 7,

  479. it is right

  480. for me to

  481. feel this

  482. way about

  483. all of you

  484. since I

  485. have you

  486. in my

  487. heart.

  488. Verse 8,

  489. God can

  490. testify how

  491. I long

  492. for you

  493. with the

  494. affection of

  495. Jesus

  496. Christ.

  497. God for

  498. all the

  499. church,

  500. he prays

  501. for them

  502. all with

  503. joy,

  504. he has

  505. them in

  506. his heart

  507. and he

  508. longs for

  509. them in

  510. affection.

  511. I suspect

  512. the answer

  513. to the

  514. question

  515. would want

  516. to use

  517. those verses

  518. as a test

  519. case as to

  520. whether or not

  521. you view

  522. them as

  523. your partners,

  524. your brothers

  525. and sisters

  526. here.

  527. I suspect

  528. those verses

  529. are a true

  530. test case as

  531. to whether we

  532. see each

  533. other as

  534. partners.

  535. So what is

  536. it that

  537. threatens our

  538. unity and

  539. partnership?

  540. Broadly

  541. speaking,

  542. it is always

  543. the three

  544. enemies of

  545. the Christian,

  546. the world,

  547. the flesh and

  548. the devil.

  549. More

  550. specifically,

  551. there are a

  552. few things,

  553. but in one

  554. way or another,

  555. I believe

  556. they're sort

  557. of attached

  558. to a common

  559. underlying

  560. issue.

  561. Longevity

  562. and

  563. effectiveness

  564. equals

  565. rights.

  566. In other

  567. words,

  568. those who

  569. have a

  570. history are

  571. more equal

  572. than others.

  573. It can

  574. express itself

  575. in many

  576. ways.

  577. Those born

  578. in this

  579. country have

  580. more rights

  581. than those

  582. who moved

  583. here two

  584. years ago.

  585. The oldest

  586. members have

  587. more rights

  588. than the

  589. younger.

  590. The oldest

  591. congregation

  592. more rights

  593. than the

  594. newest

  595. congregation.

  596. The

  597. bigger

  598. congregation

  599. more rights

  600. than the

  601. smaller

  602. congregation.

  603. Those

  604. more

  605. effective

  606. in

  607. ministry

  608. more

  609. rights

  610. than

  611. those

  612. just

  613. starting

  614. out.

  615. Those

  616. attending

  617. here the

  618. longest

  619. more rights

  620. than those

  621. who have

  622. just joined.

  623. Those

  624. being

  625. Christian

  626. for 70

  627. years

  628. more equal

  629. than those

  630. who have

  631. just come

  632. to Christ.

  633. It is so

  634. easy to

  635. start

  636. in the

  637. vineyard

  638. acknowledging

  639. that I'm

  640. a one

  641. hour

  642. worker at

  643. the end

  644. of the

  645. day in

  646. the

  647. vineyard

  648. and

  649. then

  650. eventually

  651. over

  652. time

  653. start

  654. operating

  655. as if

  656. I've

  657. done a

  658. full

  659. day's

  660. work

  661. and

  662. deserve

  663. a full

  664. day's

  665. pay.

  666. It is

  667. subtle

  668. and it

  669. happens

  670. slowly

  671. but we

  672. can stop

  673. relating to

  674. each other

  675. on the

  676. basis

  677. of grace.

  678. It is

  679. therefore

  680. crucial

  681. that we

  682. never lose

  683. sight of

  684. the gospel

  685. of grace

  686. as a

  687. church.

  688. Grace

  689. reminds me

  690. that I

  691. am a

  692. beggar

  693. at the

  694. foot of

  695. the cross

  696. and I

  697. am

  698. therefore

  699. consistently

  700. dependent

  701. upon God

  702. and I

  703. am no

  704. different

  705. than you.

  706. Grace

  707. reminds me

  708. that I

  709. have no

  710. more rights

  711. than you,

  712. no more

  713. privileges,

  714. I am

  715. not more

  716. equal.

  717. Grace

  718. reminds me

  719. that I

  720. need to

  721. consistently

  722. go downward

  723. in humility

  724. as I

  725. interact

  726. with you

  727. day by

  728. day.

  729. Grace

  730. ought to

  731. lead me

  732. to rejoice

  733. as more

  734. people come

  735. into the

  736. fellowship

  737. believers

  738. and get

  739. involved

  740. and open

  741. up new

  742. opportunities

  743. for us

  744. in ministry.

  745. I ought to

  746. rejoice

  747. because that

  748. is partnership

  749. and it is

  750. the one

  751. thing that

  752. God uses

  753. to advance

  754. the gospel

  755. amongst us

  756. and beyond

  757. us.

  758. And so

  759. friends,

  760. Hope Anglican

  761. Church no

  762. longer exists.

  763. At the

  764. beginning of

  765. January this

  766. year,

  767. we were

  768. all St.

  769. Paul's

  770. Chatswood.

  771. St.

  772. Paul's

  773. Chatswood

  774. changed on

  775. that day,

  776. the 1st

  777. of January

  778. 2010,

  779. it changed

  780. as we

  781. entered into

  782. a new

  783. partnership

  784. with new

  785. brothers and

  786. sisters who

  787. were not

  788. less than

  789. us.

  790. Things were

  791. different from

  792. that moment

  793. and what

  794. family does

  795. not work

  796. like that?

  797. when Phoebe

  798. entered our

  799. family just

  800. over a year

  801. ago,

  802. Isabel was

  803. not more

  804. equal than

  805. Phoebe

  806. just because

  807. she was

  808. there first.

  809. To treat

  810. her,

  811. Phoebe that

  812. is,

  813. as number

  814. two and

  815. not equally

  816. loved and

  817. adored would

  818. create enormous

  819. tensions and

  820. difficulties as

  821. our family

  822. grew.

  823. and a

  824. lot of

  825. expensive

  826. counsellors in

  827. years to

  828. come.

  829. And so

  830. the danger

  831. in the

  832. amalgamation

  833. is to

  834. strongly

  835. affirm that

  836. hope no

  837. longer exists

  838. but then to

  839. expect nothing

  840. to change in

  841. the St.

  842. Paul's

  843. family.

  844. That is to

  845. expect those

  846. who have

  847. come to

  848. partner with

  849. us to

  850. just fit

  851. into our

  852. ongoing

  853. ministry and

  854. agenda and

  855. program.

  856. Woohoo!

  857. You've

  858. bolstered our

  859. numbers and

  860. given us a

  861. few more

  862. dollars but

  863. just stay

  864. over there

  865. and you'll

  866. learn the

  867. ropes soon

  868. enough.

  869. Because the

  870. name and

  871. the facilities

  872. of St.

  873. Paul's was

  874. retained in

  875. the merger

  876. doesn't mean

  877. that everything

  878. else was.

  879. And so on

  880. another note

  881. our Chinese

  882. ministries are

  883. no longer the

  884. little brothers

  885. amongst us.

  886. There is

  887. some very

  888. significant

  889. ministry

  890. happening

  891. amongst our

  892. Chinese

  893. congregations.

  894. And in

  895. case you are

  896. unaware our

  897. country is

  898. becoming more

  899. and more

  900. ethnic.

  901. By 2050

  902. only 35%

  903. of our

  904. country will

  905. come from

  906. an Anglo

  907. background.

  908. And I

  909. suspect the

  910. ratio in

  911. chats would

  912. be significantly

  913. higher than

  914. say Narrabri.

  915. And

  916. therefore

  917. brothers and

  918. sisters if

  919. that is the

  920. direction of

  921. our country

  922. we need to

  923. be repositioned

  924. and aligning

  925. and resourcing

  926. our ministries

  927. accordingly.

  928. In

  929. preparation what

  930. God might do

  931. amongst us in

  932. 40 years.

  933. And so

  934. today as

  935. Brian has

  936. said we

  937. launch a

  938. new logo

  939. for St

  940. Paul's.

  941. At the

  942. centre of

  943. this logo

  944. is the

  945. cross and

  946. it is the

  947. cross that

  948. is drawing

  949. us together

  950. in fellowship.

  951. Lots of

  952. people,

  953. different people

  954. from different

  955. backgrounds and

  956. different places

  957. coming together

  958. in partnership

  959. and unity

  960. because of

  961. the gospel

  962. of grace

  963. of our

  964. Lord Jesus

  965. Christ.

  966. The closer

  967. we get to

  968. the gospel

  969. of grace,

  970. the closer

  971. we get to

  972. the cross

  973. the greater

  974. the intensity

  975. of partnership.

  976. To live

  977. that life,

  978. a life worthy

  979. of the gospel

  980. in partnership

  981. takes fearless

  982. courage and

  983. sacrifice.

  984. It means

  985. that I

  986. consistently

  987. lay aside

  988. myself as

  989. an individual

  990. for the

  991. sake of the

  992. advancement of

  993. the gospel

  994. and the

  995. glory of

  996. God.

  997. God

  998. and so

  999. let us

  1000. allow the

  1001. apostle Paul

  1002. to realign

  1003. us again

  1004. and challenge

  1005. us.

  1006. Verse 14

  1007. Because of

  1008. my chains

  1009. most of the

  1010. brothers in

  1011. the Lord

  1012. have been

  1013. encouraged to

  1014. speak the

  1015. word of

  1016. God more

  1017. courageously

  1018. and fearlessly.

  1019. It is true

  1020. that some

  1021. preach Christ

  1022. out of envy

  1023. and rivalry

  1024. but others

  1025. out of good

  1026. will.

  1027. And again

  1028. in verse 17

  1029. talking about

  1030. those with

  1031. wrong motives

  1032. he says

  1033. they preach

  1034. Christ out of

  1035. selfish ambition

  1036. not sincerely

  1037. supposing they

  1038. can stir up

  1039. trouble for

  1040. me while I

  1041. am in

  1042. chains.

  1043. So here's

  1044. Paul in

  1045. prison and

  1046. some say we

  1047. can make life

  1048. even worse for

  1049. Paul if we

  1050. preach this

  1051. message.

  1052. We can get

  1053. him even into

  1054. more trouble if

  1055. we preach the

  1056. gospel.

  1057. How do you

  1058. think you'd

  1059. feel?

  1060. You're knocked

  1061. down,

  1062. circumstances are

  1063. against you

  1064. and someone

  1065. thinks he's

  1066. here's a

  1067. great opportunity

  1068. to stick

  1069. the boot

  1070. in.

  1071. In fact

  1072. we may

  1073. even end

  1074. up with

  1075. his head

  1076. on a

  1077. platter.

  1078. Don't you

  1079. think you'd

  1080. want revenge?

  1081. Don't you

  1082. think you'd

  1083. be calling

  1084. on God?

  1085. Fix this

  1086. problem God.

  1087. Don't you

  1088. think you'd

  1089. want God

  1090. to judge

  1091. these people

  1092. with their

  1093. motives?

  1094. Don't you?

  1095. Not Paul

  1096. verse 18

  1097. God

  1098. but what

  1099. does it

  1100. matter?

  1101. The

  1102. important

  1103. thing that

  1104. is in

  1105. every way

  1106. whether from

  1107. false

  1108. motives or

  1109. true,

  1110. Christ is

  1111. preached

  1112. and therefore

  1113. I rejoice.

  1114. He doesn't

  1115. complain,

  1116. he's not

  1117. angry with

  1118. God about

  1119. it,

  1120. he doesn't

  1121. curse those

  1122. who are

  1123. against him,

  1124. he doesn't

  1125. even tolerate

  1126. it,

  1127. he in fact

  1128. rejoices that

  1129. Christ is

  1130. preached as

  1131. he is

  1132. rotting in

  1133. a prison

  1134. cell.

  1135. What is

  1136. wrong with

  1137. this guy?

  1138. He isn't

  1139. worried about

  1140. his pride,

  1141. he isn't

  1142. worried about

  1143. his reputation,

  1144. he isn't

  1145. worried about

  1146. his position

  1147. as an

  1148. apostle,

  1149. he isn't

  1150. concerned for

  1151. his comfort,

  1152. he isn't

  1153. concerned for

  1154. his own

  1155. advancement,

  1156. he doesn't

  1157. logically think

  1158. God,

  1159. I'm an

  1160. apostle to

  1161. take the

  1162. gospel to

  1163. the nations,

  1164. surely this

  1165. is not

  1166. part of

  1167. your plan.

  1168. He is

  1169. concerned only

  1170. for Jesus,

  1171. he is

  1172. concerned with

  1173. the reputation

  1174. of the Lord

  1175. Jesus,

  1176. he is

  1177. concerned that

  1178. other people

  1179. hear about

  1180. Jesus,

  1181. he is

  1182. concerned that

  1183. the gospel

  1184. of Christ

  1185. is advanced.

  1186. Paul has

  1187. been so

  1188. gripped by

  1189. God's grace

  1190. to him

  1191. through Jesus,

  1192. so impacted

  1193. by this

  1194. new lease

  1195. on life

  1196. through

  1197. Jesus,

  1198. that he

  1199. is prepared

  1200. to sacrifice

  1201. his own

  1202. desires,

  1203. his will,

  1204. his pride,

  1205. his reputation,

  1206. even his

  1207. own life,

  1208. he lays it

  1209. all on the

  1210. line for

  1211. the glory

  1212. of the

  1213. Lord Jesus.

  1214. Everything

  1215. in life

  1216. now revolves

  1217. around Jesus,

  1218. not Paul.

  1219. It is all

  1220. about Jesus

  1221. and not

  1222. Paul.

  1223. His life

  1224. has been

  1225. reorientated

  1226. to be

  1227. thoroughly

  1228. gospel-centered.

  1229. His primary

  1230. concern is

  1231. the advancement

  1232. of the

  1233. gospel.

  1234. The advancement

  1235. of the

  1236. gospel means

  1237. laying aside

  1238. my personal

  1239. glory,

  1240. my comfort,

  1241. so that

  1242. God might

  1243. become

  1244. great.

  1245. But that's

  1246. not all.

  1247. There's

  1248. more.

  1249. Verse 20,

  1250. Paul says

  1251. that whatever

  1252. happens,

  1253. may the

  1254. Lord Jesus

  1255. Christ be

  1256. exalted,

  1257. whether that

  1258. be in my

  1259. life or

  1260. whether it

  1261. be in my

  1262. death.

  1263. You see

  1264. what he's

  1265. saying there?

  1266. If it

  1267. means I

  1268. live or

  1269. it means

  1270. I die,

  1271. whatever it

  1272. takes,

  1273. that the

  1274. gospel might

  1275. be advanced

  1276. and glory

  1277. might be

  1278. made to

  1279. Jesus.

  1280. What Paul

  1281. is saying

  1282. here is

  1283. that it's

  1284. all about

  1285. life and

  1286. death.

  1287. This is

  1288. not a

  1289. trivial

  1290. matter,

  1291. friends.

  1292. Verse 22

  1293. gives us a

  1294. glimpse of

  1295. how Paul

  1296. is thinking.

  1297. If I'm

  1298. to go on

  1299. living in

  1300. the body,

  1301. this will

  1302. mean fruitful

  1303. labour for

  1304. me, yet

  1305. what shall

  1306. I choose?

  1307. I do not

  1308. know.

  1309. I am

  1310. torn between

  1311. the two.

  1312. I desire

  1313. to depart

  1314. to be

  1315. with Christ,

  1316. which is

  1317. better by

  1318. far, but

  1319. it is more

  1320. necessary for

  1321. you that I

  1322. remain in

  1323. the body.

  1324. Convinced of

  1325. this, I

  1326. know that I

  1327. will remain

  1328. and I

  1329. will continue

  1330. with all

  1331. of you for

  1332. your progress

  1333. and joy

  1334. in the

  1335. faith.

  1336. And so

  1337. what Paul

  1338. is doing

  1339. is he sits

  1340. there and

  1341. rots in

  1342. this prison,

  1343. he looks

  1344. at his

  1345. life and

  1346. he thinks,

  1347. if I

  1348. live,

  1349. then it

  1350. means more

  1351. opportunities

  1352. to do

  1353. what I

  1354. can for

  1355. the gospel

  1356. to advance,

  1357. more

  1358. opportunities to

  1359. make God

  1360. look great,

  1361. but if I

  1362. die, I

  1363. will be in

  1364. heaven.

  1365. No more

  1366. prison, no

  1367. more chains,

  1368. no more

  1369. ridiculed, no

  1370. more persecution.

  1371. I will be

  1372. with Jesus and

  1373. that is clearly

  1374. better by far.

  1375. God.

  1376. He knows in

  1377. the end that

  1378. it's all in

  1379. God's hands,

  1380. but he

  1381. says, if I'm

  1382. going to

  1383. choose, what

  1384. will I

  1385. choose?

  1386. He says, I

  1387. would choose

  1388. more of the

  1389. same.

  1390. Paul says,

  1391. it is more

  1392. important for

  1393. you that I

  1394. remain.

  1395. Even as he

  1396. rots in

  1397. prison and

  1398. he faces

  1399. death, he's

  1400. not concerned

  1401. with himself.

  1402. He sees

  1403. that for him

  1404. to go on

  1405. living is

  1406. all about

  1407. partnership in

  1408. the advancement

  1409. of the

  1410. gospel.

  1411. And if it

  1412. means that he

  1413. rots in

  1414. prison so the

  1415. gospel would be

  1416. advanced, then

  1417. so be it.

  1418. if I have

  1419. the choice

  1420. right now, he

  1421. says, in

  1422. that moment

  1423. between eternal

  1424. glory and

  1425. more suffering

  1426. and partnership

  1427. for the

  1428. advancement of

  1429. the gospel,

  1430. then right

  1431. now, for

  1432. your sakes,

  1433. church at

  1434. Philippi, you

  1435. need me to

  1436. suffer more.

  1437. And so

  1438. therefore I

  1439. will.

  1440. Because it's

  1441. not about

  1442. him.

  1443. verse 21

  1444. is Paul's

  1445. grace-driven

  1446. outlook on

  1447. life in a

  1448. nutshell.

  1449. For to me,

  1450. to live is

  1451. Christ and

  1452. to die is

  1453. gain.

  1454. When I

  1455. first became

  1456. a Christian,

  1457. I bought

  1458. this Bible.

  1459. And I'm

  1460. not sure what

  1461. you, I

  1462. think you

  1463. just go and

  1464. get a big

  1465. Bible.

  1466. I think when

  1467. you first

  1468. become a

  1469. Christian,

  1470. show your

  1471. keenness.

  1472. And I

  1473. wrote at

  1474. the beginning

  1475. my very

  1476. first memory

  1477. verse.

  1478. For to me,

  1479. to live is

  1480. Christ and

  1481. to die is

  1482. gain.

  1483. I wanted a

  1484. verse that

  1485. was going to

  1486. summarise my

  1487. life.

  1488. Something that

  1489. I would

  1490. proudly put on

  1491. a tombstone

  1492. or someone

  1493. else would

  1494. put on a

  1495. tombstone

  1496. for me.

  1497. That would

  1498. be a

  1499. miracle.

  1500. To live

  1501. is Christ,

  1502. to die is

  1503. gain,

  1504. and under

  1505. that I

  1506. have written

  1507. these words,

  1508. engage the

  1509. pain,

  1510. don't run.

  1511. Communicate

  1512. the gospel,

  1513. protect the

  1514. gospel,

  1515. adorn the

  1516. gospel,

  1517. suffer for

  1518. the gospel.

  1519. The

  1520. gospel of

  1521. grace has

  1522. so turned

  1523. around Paul's

  1524. life that

  1525. he is now

  1526. partnering with

  1527. those he

  1528. persecuted.

  1529. It has

  1530. so turned

  1531. his life

  1532. around that

  1533. his whole

  1534. perspective

  1535. on life

  1536. and death

  1537. is all

  1538. about

  1539. Jesus.

  1540. For to

  1541. me,

  1542. to live

  1543. life is

  1544. all about

  1545. Jesus,

  1546. and to

  1547. die is

  1548. just to

  1549. get more

  1550. of Jesus.

  1551. Is it

  1552. any wonder

  1553. that he

  1554. calls this

  1555. church at

  1556. Philippi,

  1557. and he

  1558. calls us

  1559. and every

  1560. generation

  1561. since then

  1562. to live

  1563. in such

  1564. a way

  1565. that Jesus

  1566. looks

  1567. spectacular?

  1568. Could you

  1569. say that?

  1570. Could you

  1571. read those

  1572. words and

  1573. for them to

  1574. ring true for

  1575. the way that

  1576. you view your

  1577. life and

  1578. your death?

  1579. Maybe your

  1580. wording is

  1581. more like

  1582. to me to

  1583. live and

  1584. to die would

  1585. be really

  1586. inconvenient

  1587. right now.

  1588. Maybe you've

  1589. got plans,

  1590. you've got

  1591. things you

  1592. want to do

  1593. with your

  1594. life,

  1595. lots of

  1596. things to

  1597. achieve,

  1598. things to

  1599. achieve and

  1600. to advance

  1601. for your

  1602. own gain.

  1603. Maybe Jesus

  1604. doesn't fit in

  1605. with some of

  1606. those plans and

  1607. maybe you want

  1608. to do some

  1609. things first and

  1610. then maybe

  1611. hand over to

  1612. Jesus a little

  1613. bit later once

  1614. you've advanced

  1615. yourself.

  1616. and if that

  1617. is you,

  1618. then death

  1619. is the

  1620. ultimate thing

  1621. for you to

  1622. avoid because

  1623. this is the

  1624. thing that gets

  1625. in the way of

  1626. you getting

  1627. what you want

  1628. in your life.

  1629. And therefore

  1630. courage and

  1631. fearlessness is

  1632. not high on the

  1633. agenda in

  1634. advancement of

  1635. the gospel.

  1636. This isn't how

  1637. Paul viewed his

  1638. life, all

  1639. because of the

  1640. gospel of grace.

  1641. It isn't how

  1642. any Christian

  1643. should view

  1644. their life.

  1645. We are meant

  1646. to have a

  1647. commitment to

  1648. Jesus that

  1649. is sort of

  1650. until death

  1651. do us part,

  1652. if you know

  1653. what I mean.

  1654. Paul calls

  1655. us to stop

  1656. dating Jesus

  1657. and get

  1658. committed.

  1659. To live is

  1660. to live for

  1661. Jesus, to

  1662. die is to

  1663. get even

  1664. more of

  1665. Jesus.

  1666. Such a

  1667. call to the

  1668. commitment of

  1669. the advancement

  1670. of the gospel

  1671. and the glory

  1672. of Christ has

  1673. led many people

  1674. to do

  1675. extraordinary

  1676. things over

  1677. the centuries,

  1678. to live

  1679. lives worthy

  1680. of the gospel.

  1681. There is a

  1682. great cloud of

  1683. witnesses before

  1684. us, friends,

  1685. and at this

  1686. point in history

  1687. we stand on the

  1688. shoulders of

  1689. significant people

  1690. who have gone

  1691. before us in so

  1692. many ways, and

  1693. they are a

  1694. motivation and an

  1695. encouragement and a

  1696. challenge to us.

  1697. For instance, in

  1698. 1800, a young

  1699. 19-year-old man

  1700. named Henry

  1701. Martin became a

  1702. Christian while

  1703. studying at

  1704. Cambridge University

  1705. University in

  1706. England.

  1707. He was

  1708. brilliant in

  1709. a variety of

  1710. areas including

  1711. mathematics,

  1712. philosophy, and

  1713. theology.

  1714. By just five

  1715. years later, after

  1716. becoming a

  1717. Christian, in

  1718. 1805, and at

  1719. the age of

  1720. 24, he left

  1721. everything, including

  1722. the love of his

  1723. life, Lydia

  1724. Grenfell.

  1725. He went

  1726. firstly to

  1727. India as a

  1728. missionary and

  1729. then on to

  1730. other countries.

  1731. The boat took

  1732. ten months to

  1733. get to India

  1734. and in the

  1735. process, he

  1736. became extremely

  1737. ill and almost

  1738. died.

  1739. He went on to

  1740. take the good

  1741. news about Jesus

  1742. to three other

  1743. countries and

  1744. translated the

  1745. Bible into

  1746. Arabic.

  1747. When he arrived

  1748. in India after

  1749. the ten-month

  1750. trip and nearly

  1751. dying, he said

  1752. this,

  1753. He did die

  1754. on the 16th

  1755. of October

  1756. 1812, 12

  1757. years after

  1758. becoming a

  1759. Christian, at

  1760. the age of

  1761. 31, sharing

  1762. Jesus with

  1763. Muslims in

  1764. Iran.

  1765. He had a

  1766. vision for

  1767. life and for

  1768. death.

  1769. If I die, I

  1770. die to be

  1771. happy, but if

  1772. I live, I

  1773. shall live to

  1774. the glory of

  1775. God alone.

  1776. It sounds

  1777. very familiar

  1778. to the

  1779. Apostle Paul's

  1780. words, whatever

  1781. happens, conduct

  1782. yourselves in a

  1783. manner worthy of

  1784. the gospel of

  1785. Christ for me to

  1786. live is Christ

  1787. and to die

  1788. is gain.

  1789. The conviction

  1790. that has gripped

  1791. me over recent

  1792. years is that

  1793. courage is at

  1794. the centre of

  1795. what it means

  1796. to live a

  1797. life worthy

  1798. of the gospel

  1799. of Christ.

  1800. Boldness in

  1801. the fear of

  1802. opposition is

  1803. at the heart

  1804. of being a

  1805. Christian.

  1806. It is not

  1807. an upper

  1808. level spirituality

  1809. for super

  1810. saints.

  1811. It is the

  1812. everyday requirement

  1813. of Christian

  1814. living.

  1815. And so

  1816. friends, it

  1817. is almost

  1818. one year since

  1819. I stood here

  1820. and launched

  1821. Vision 2020.

  1822. And at its

  1823. heart, it's a

  1824. vision that

  1825. desires to see

  1826. members of

  1827. St. Paul's

  1828. individually and

  1829. together living

  1830. lives worthy of

  1831. the gospel of

  1832. Christ.

1833. It is a vision to

  1834. see Jesus made

  1835. great in this

  1836. area.

  1837. It's a vision that

  1838. is intended to

  1839. unite us for a

  1840. common purpose,

  1841. heading in a

  1842. common direction

  1843. with a common

  1844. goal, and that

  1845. is to make

  1846. Jesus look

  1847. great, for

  1848. him to be our

  1849. greatest treasure,

  1850. and for all

  1851. the world to

  1852. know it.

  1853. I believe it

  1854. says very

  1855. clearly who we

  1856. are meant to

  1857. be and what we

  1858. are on about.

  1859. And so I want

  1860. to ask you, how

  1861. has Vision 2020

  1862. shaped you in the

  1863. last 12 months?

  1864. How has life

  1865. changed for you?

  1866. What have you

  1867. sacrificed?

  1868. The great danger

  1869. for us as a

  1870. church is to hear

  1871. the language of

  1872. Vision 2020, even

  1873. use the language of

  1874. Vision 2020, and

  1875. just keep on as

  1876. individuals doing

  1877. what we've always

  1878. done and nothing

  1879. changes.

  1880. and we put it

  1881. all in the

  1882. veneer of a

  1883. Vision 2020

  1884. language.

  1885. That's not what's

  1886. been happening for

1887. me in the last 12

  1888. months.

  1889. I asked the

  1890. senior staff a

  1891. couple of weeks

  1892. ago to give me

  1893. a commitment, as

  1894. far as they were

  1895. able to, under

  1896. God, to commit

  1897. their lives to

  1898. Vision 2020

  1899. until Vision,

  1900. until 2020.

  1901. I want their

  1902. partnership in the

  1903. gospel.

  1904. I need their

  1905. partnership in the

  1906. gospel.

  1907. But in asking for

  1908. that, I also, in

  1909. the process, said

  1910. that I need their

  1911. sacrifice in order

  1912. that the gospel

  1913. would be advanced,

  1914. that this vision

  1915. would be advanced

  1916. and realised under

  1917. God.

  1918. Whatever it takes,

  1919. I said, whatever it

  1920. takes for the next

  1921. 10 years, will you

  1922. do it?

  1923. Whatever new role

  1924. you have to take

1925. on or to give up,

  1926. an old one, we

  1927. will do it together

  1928. in order to not

  1929. stand in the way

  1930. of God growing his

  1931. church and the

  1932. gospel advancing in

  1933. this place.

1934. I said to them at

  1935. some point, you may

1936. come to me and say,

  1937. Steve, it's time to

  1938. go.

  1939. Steve, it's time to

  1940. change your role.

  1941. It's time to step

  1942. down and someone

  1943. else step up.

  1944. Because right now,

  1945. you're not the

  1946. person to take us

  1947. from 1,000 to 2,000.

1948. And for the sake of

  1949. the advancement of

  1950. the gospel, you need

  1951. to lay yourself

  1952. aside.

1953. Or maybe to say to

  1954. some that you can

  1955. no longer preach,

  1956. even though it is

  1957. your gifting.

1958. But right now, as a

  1959. church, we need you

  1960. over there.

  1961. Will you sacrifice?

  1962. Will you give up?

  1963. Or to move another

  1964. person from their

  1965. passion in one area

  1966. of ministry to another

  1967. area of ministry,

  1968. because that is what

  1969. is beneficial for the

  1970. advancement of the

  1971. gospel in that

  1972. moment.

  1973. And the call is

  1974. this.

  1975. Will you give up?

  1976. Will you serve?

  1977. Will you sacrifice?

  1978. Will you surrender

  1979. your comfort,

  1980. sacrifice,

  1981. prestige and

  1982. position and

  1983. significance and

  1984. recognition and

  1985. preferences for the

  1986. sake of partnership

  1987. and the advancement of

  1988. the gospel of the

  1989. Lord Jesus Christ?

  1990. Christ?

1991. We need the perspective of

1992. Paul that if it is best

1993. for me to be in chains

1994. and rot, then I will do

1995. so if that means it's the

  1996. advancement of the gospel.

  1997. gospel.

1998. That is for all of us, that if

1999. it is best for me to be in

2000. chains and rot for the gospel

2001. to advance, then so be it,

2002. because this is the vision that

2003. God has called us to.

  2004. We need a gospel-driven

2005. perspective on life and death if

2006. we are to see Vision 2020

2007. realized amongst us under God.

  2008. There are many confronting

2009. issues and there are many

2010. things that we will be

2011. dealing with in the coming

  2012. years.

2013. I hope you realize that,

2014. that for Vision 2020 to be

2015. realized, this place will be

2016. vastly different in the future.

2017. Praise God, so that more

2018. people might come under the

2019. Lordship of Christ means that

  2020. we need to sacrifice.

2021. There are already means that

  2022. parish council has been

2023. stepping out of operations to

  2024. focus explicitly on governance

  2025. and resourcing the vision,

2026. because no other group in this

2027. church is going to work on a

2028. 10-year plan on how to resource

2029. and develop this place in order

2030. for Vision 2020 to be realized.

2031. That is part of the painful

2032. experience of sacrificing so that

2033. the gospel might advance a group

2034. of people who have got their

2035. hands in and are actively

  2036. involved in day-by-day operations

  2037. are actually deliberately

2038. stepping back to look at the

2039. longer-term vision of the place.

  2040. That is sacrifice.

2041. It may mean for us redeploying

  2042. financial or personal resources

2043. so that one dearly loved area of

2044. ministry and transferring it to

2045. another area of ministry which may

2046. be virtually unknown to us, but an

2047. area where we believe God is

2048. leading us to. It may mean

  2049. investigating other church sites.

2050. It may mean a turnover of staff to

2051. get the right people in the right

2052. roles. It may mean even the

2053. removal of pews for more

2054. functional seating so that this

2055. resource that we sit in can in

2056. fact be used more effectively and

2057. efficiently. It may mean a large

2058. redevelopment of this site. It may

  2059. mean a radical shake-up of our

  2060. congregational meeting times and

2061. places. Whatever it may mean, it

2062. will definitely need to be graced,

2063. drenched partnership in the gospel

2064. of the Lord Jesus Christ and

2065. fearless courage in sacrifice and

2066. service for the advancement of the

2067. gospel because people's lives are at

  2068. stake.

2069. The leadership needs the freedom and

  2070. the encouragement and the

2071. partnership and the prayers to leave

2072. no stone unturned as we seek to

2073. utilize our resources for maximum

2074. impact to the advancement of the

2075. gospel and the glory of God in this

  2076. place.

2077. And so friends, are you prepared to say

2078. with Paul, what does it matter?

2079. So long as Christ is preached, is your

2080. vision bigger than your own preferences

2081. and your own contentment and your own

2082. comfort? In fact, I want to ask you, is

2083. your vision even bigger than Vision 2020?

2084. Is your vision to live a life worthy of

2085. the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ?

2086. So now, now is the time to start stirring

2087. each other up in partnership, to take

2088. some risks in more venturesome acts of

2089. love and evangelism and discipleship, to

2090. pray earnestly for the Spirit of God to

2091. move through us so that whatever happens in

2092. the future here at St Paul's, we will

2093. conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of

2094. the gospel of Christ. Amen.
