  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. It's a pleasure to be back here at St Paul's bringing the Word of God this morning and to have been asked to share with you.

  3. My wife Vanessa and I are here from Africa for roughly two to three months and we'd love to catch up with you during that time.

  4. Vanessa arrives tonight, late tonight on a plane from Perth and we'll probably be having a rest for a few days but after that we'd love to catch up with any and all of you.

  5. Now the epistle of Peter, the first epistle of Peter is an epistle that Peter has written to Christians who are scattered throughout a pagan society.

  6. And it is a letter written to Christians who in their context will be undergoing suffering and persecution and where the values of the society around them are putting a pressure upon them to live a particular way.

  7. And so it's in this context that we look at the passage here today.

  8. It's quite applicable this passage really in that light for us here in Sydney and the church in Sydney.

  9. And although persecution here is not as overt as it was in the Roman Empire, it is nonetheless it is there and it is underlying a lot of the fabric of our society.

  10. And you will hear Christians and the Christian faith openly mocked on television or on the radio.

  11. There is so much media coming through with anti-God values.

  12. And so in that way our society in Sydney has a lot of things that are similar to the society back in the days of the Roman Empire.

  13. And of course they had gladiator events, then we have the rugby league.

  14. But there's a lot of similarities there and there is nonetheless a pressure on us as Christians to be living and responding a certain way when confronted and surrounded by people from a pagan society.

  15. So when this passage opens, we see it says,

  16. Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and strangers in the world to abstain from sinful desires which war against your soul.

  17. Live such good lives among the pagans that though they accuse you of doing wrong,

  18. they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  19. These desires actually wage war against our soul.

  20. And in the passage, I don't actually think Peter is so much talking about the sinful desires of the flesh

  21. or about anger or greed or coveting as much as I think he is talking about things simply like submitting to authorities,

  22. respecting one another, respecting one another, loving one another, and honouring the king, fearing God.

  23. These are all temptations that with the pressure of the society around them, acting upon them,

  24. it is a temptation not to do these things.

  25. Not only are these things waging war against our soul and against their soul,

  26. but we have an enemy, as Sam points out, we are in a war against an enemy who roams around like a roaring lion

  27. waiting for someone to devour.

  28. And you see, the devil knows that Christians have a righteousness that is by faith.

  29. Our righteousness is because we believe that Jesus has died for our sins,

  30. and because of that, we are made completely righteous before God.

  31. And that is based on what we believe.

  32. And so the devil knows that while ever we believe that,

  33. and while ever our faith is at this level,

  34. then the life we live will accordingly be at an equal level.

  35. And so the devil's main aim is to get us to doubt,

  36. to get us to not believe that Jesus has paid the full penalty,

  37. not just for our sins, but for all our brothers' and sisters' sins.

  38. He does this through our conscience.

  39. That is the main weapon he uses, is our conscience.

  40. You know, Peter says later in the passage,

  41. he talks about not using our freedom as a cloak for evil,

  42. to hide sin.

  43. It is very easy in that society and in our society

  44. to compromise our values as Christians,

  45. to compromise our walk with God,

  46. and actually say, well, that's okay, I'm under grace.

  47. I'm under grace, so I'm under freedom,

  48. so it doesn't really matter what I do so much.

  49. But, you see, because we have an enemy,

  50. and that enemy will use a pure conscience,

  51. and he will come to someone with a pure conscience,

  52. and he will try and get them to stop believing

  53. they are righteous because of what Christ has done,

  54. let alone if we go forward with an impure conscience.

  55. If we go forward and go forward willingly in sin,

  56. then the devil will use the fact that our conscience is muddied,

  57. he will use that to get us to doubt

  58. that we are righteous before God,

  59. and that we are completely forgiven

  60. because he knows that our walk

  61. will be always equivalent with what we believe.

  62. In 2 Peter 1, verses 5 to 9, it says,

    2 Peter 1:5–9

  63. for this very reason, make every effort

  64. to add to your faith goodness,

  65. and to goodness knowledge,

  66. and to knowledge self-control,

  67. and to self-control perseverance,

  68. and to perseverance godliness,

  69. and to godliness brotherly kindness,

  70. and to brotherly kindness love.

  71. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure,

  72. they will keep you from being ineffective

  73. and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  74. But if anyone does not have them,

  75. he is nearsighted and blind,

  76. and has forgotten that he has been cleansed

  77. from his past sins.

  78. You see, the problem with a backslidden Christian

  79. is not primarily about what he is doing.

  80. The problem with the backslidden Christian

  81. is about what they have started to believe.

  82. And what they have started to believe,

  83. their faith will naturally come out in what they do.

  84. If we are living lives

  85. where our conscience gets seared,

  86. we will start forgetting

  87. that we have been cleansed from our past sins,

  88. because that is what the devil will be helping us do

  89. by saying,

  90. you're guilty,

  91. you're not forgiven.

  92. And we will forget

  93. we have been cleansed from past sins,

  94. and as a result,

  95. we will live accordingly to that.

  96. Our faith has to issue itself in action.

  97. What we believe

  98. will always be demonstrated by what we do.

  99. And in a context

  100. where the society's values have decayed,

  101. and Christians are suffering

  102. and are being persecuted,

  103. the threat of Christians

  104. using the freedom they have in Christ

  105. as a cover-up for evil,

  106. and subsequently forgetting

  107. their cleansing from past sins,

  108. was a very real one to Peter.

  109. So when Peter goes through this passage,

  110. there are really primarily three things

  111. that he is on about,

  112. and the first thing he is on about,

  113. it is God's will that by doing good,

  114. you should silence the ignorant talk

  115. of foolish men.

  116. That is the first thing

  117. in this passage he is addressing.

  118. The Christians are in a context

  119. where for the Lord's sake,

  120. they need to submit to all those authorities,

  121. and we need to submit authorities

  122. always anyway,

  123. but especially in this pagan world

  124. where they are under such scrutiny.

  125. See, the unbelieving world

  126. watches us like a hawk.

  127. They watch us so carefully

  128. and try and find where we slip up.

  129. And so what Peter is saying

  130. is that we have to live such blameless lives

  131. in that world

  132. by submitting to authorities,

  133. by honouring the king,

  134. by fearing God,

  135. by loving one another,

  136. that they have absolutely no substance

  137. to any of the foolish accusations

  138. that they make

  139. against the people of God.

  140. And so that those accusations

  141. have no substance.

  142. We might remember back in Genesis chapter 41

    Genesis 41 chapter mention

  143. when we saw Joseph,

  144. and he was in Egypt,

  145. and he was there

  146. with a pagan king

  147. and a pagan society,

  148. and yet this pharaoh

  149. was able to say,

  150. was able to say,

  151. can we find anyone

  152. like this man,

  153. one in whom

  154. is the Spirit of God?

  155. A pagan pharaoh.

  156. And back then, of course,

  157. there was no, you know,

  158. no one really

  159. officially knew

  160. the Holy Spirit

  161. in that way.

  162. But see,

  163. the pharaoh could look at Joseph

  164. and he could see

  165. that inside that man

  166. was something different,

  167. and he could tell

  168. by the way he conducted himself,

  169. by the insight he was given,

  170. and by the man that he was,

  171. he could tell

  172. that in that society

  173. this was someone

  174. who stood out,

  175. and he could tell

  176. that within him,

  177. even though being a pagan,

  178. he could tell

  179. that within him

  180. was a holy God,

  181. was a Holy Spirit.

  182. And similarly,

  183. in Babylon,

  184. when Daniel had been

  185. taken into captivity

  186. with the rest of Israel,

  187. King Nebuchadnezzar

  188. said of Daniel,

  189. he had named him

  190. Belteshazzar

  191. after the name

  192. of his God,

  193. and he said,

  194. he is called Belteshazzar

  195. after the name

  196. of my God,

  197. and the Spirit

  198. of the Holy Gods

  199. is in him.

  200. This is coming

  201. from a king

  202. who made giant golden statues

  203. and asked people

  204. to come and bow down

  205. to them,

  206. or he was going

  207. to chuck them

  208. into a furnace.

  209. This is a pagan king,

  210. and yet he was able

  211. to look at Daniel

  212. and say,

  213. the Spirit

  214. of the Holy God

  215. is in him.

  216. You are the light

  217. of the world.

  218. A city on a hill

  219. cannot be hidden.

  220. Neither do people

  221. light a lamp

  222. and put it under a bowl.

  223. Instead,

  224. they put it on its stand,

  225. and it gives light

  226. to everyone

  227. in the house.

  228. In the same way,

  229. let your light

  230. shine before men

  231. that they may see

  232. your good deeds,

  233. and praise your Father

  234. in heaven.

  235. It brings God glory

  236. when the people of God

  237. are living in such a way

  238. that the pagan world

  239. looks at them

  240. as blameless,

  241. and that when they are

  242. making their accusations,

  243. everyone can see

  244. that they've got

  245. no substance to it.

  246. That brings glory

  247. to God.

  248. Similarly,

  249. it brings slander

  250. and blasphemy

  251. to the way

  252. of Christians

  253. and to Christ himself

  254. if we are living

  255. in society

  256. and we are walking

  257. forward in sin.

  258. And so,

  259. part of that,

  260. and what Peter

  261. is saying,

  262. is that to silence

  263. the talk of foolish men,

  264. we need to submit

  265. to the authorities

  266. that have been put

  267. in place.

  268. And of course,

  269. we learn in Romans 13,

    Romans 13:1–3

  270. verses 1 to 3,

  271. everyone must submit

  272. himself to the

  273. governing authorities,

  274. for there is no authority

  275. except that which God

  276. has established,

  277. and the authorities

  278. that exist

  279. have been established

  280. by God.

  281. Consequently,

  282. he who rebels

  283. against the authority

  284. is rebelling

  285. against what God

  286. has instituted,

  287. and those who do so

  288. will bring judgment

  289. on themselves.

  290. I mean,

  291. it's pretty straightforward.

  292. Unfortunately,

  293. as Aussies,

  294. we come from

  295. originally

  296. a settlement

  297. of convicts,

  298. so we have a bit

  299. of an attitude

  300. to authority,

  301. which works

  302. a little bit like this.

  303. I figured it out

  304. from being,

  305. well,

  306. it's not that hard

  307. to figure out,

  308. actually,

  309. but you see it

  310. very clearly

  311. when you're living

  312. in another culture

  313. where submission

  314. to authority

  315. is a very,

  316. very different thing.

  317. So,

  318. the way our thinking

  319. works is like this.

  320. This man is in authority.

  321. What's he doing?

  322. What's he saying?

  323. And so,

  324. we sort of judge

  325. and rate what he is doing

  326. and saying,

  327. and then determine

  328. from our judgment

  329. and our rating

  330. as to whether

  331. we should submit

  332. to his authority

  333. or not.

  334. Now,

  335. in Africa,

  336. submission to authority

  337. can be authorities

  338. who are treating them

  339. very badly,

  340. but they will always

  341. submit to the authority

  342. because submission

  343. to authority

  344. is not about

  345. what the person

  346. in authority

  347. does or says,

  348. it is about

  349. his position.

  350. Completely unconditional.

  351. It is about

  352. his position.

  353. It is a position

  354. that we know

  355. that God

  356. has given

  357. to that person

  358. and so,

  359. like they do

  360. in Africa,

  361. we should submit

  362. to the authorities

  363. that have been

  364. put in place

  365. simply because

  366. of the position

  367. they have been

  368. given

  369. by God.

  370. And in so doing,

  371. we are acknowledging

  372. that it is God

  373. who put them there

  374. and we are confirming

  375. that the word of God

  376. is true.

  377. And so,

  378. it is for the Lord's

  379. sake that we do this.

  380. Now,

  381. the second point

  382. that Peter is making

  383. here is suffering

  384. for doing good

  385. is commendable.

  386. Suffering for doing

  387. good is commendable.

  388. And I am sure

  389. at this stage,

  390. Peter was recalling

  391. Jesus' words

  392. in Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  393. which are also

  394. recorded in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  395. chapter 5.

  396. He says,

  397. But I tell you

  398. who hear me,

  399. love your enemies,

  400. do good to those

  401. who hate you,

  402. bless those

  403. who curse you,

  404. pray for those

  405. who mistreat you.

  406. If someone

  407. strikes you

  408. on one cheek,

  409. turn to him

  410. the other also.

  411. And if someone

  412. takes your cloak,

  413. do not stop him

  414. from taking your tunic.

  415. Give to everyone

  416. who asks you

  417. and if anyone

  418. takes what belongs

  419. to you,

  420. do not demand it back.

  421. Do to others

  422. as you would have

  423. them do to you.

  424. If you love

  425. those who love

  426. you,

  427. what credit

  428. is that to you?

  429. If you just

  430. love those

  431. who love you?

  432. Even sinners

  433. love those

  434. who love them

  435. and if you do

  436. good to those

  437. who are good

  438. to you,

  439. what credit

  440. is that to you?

  441. Even sinners

  442. do that.

  443. And if you lend

  444. to those

  445. from you

  446. what credit

  447. is that to you?

  448. Even sinners

  449. lend to sinners

  450. expecting

  451. to be repaid

  452. in full

  453. but love your

  454. enemies,

  455. do good to

  456. them and lend

  457. to them

  458. without expecting to get anything back.

  459. Then your reward will be great

  460. and you'll be sons of the Most High

  461. because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

  462. Be merciful just as your father is merciful.

  463. And so it is only in the light of being mistreated

  464. and being harshly spoken to

  465. and being unfairly done by,

  466. it is only in the light of our response to that

  467. that people will see that we are in actual fact different

  468. and the one that is in us

  469. is different to the one that is in the world.

  470. Otherwise we're just doing what the world does.

  471. We just, I mean, we can be Christians

  472. and we can be really nice people

  473. who are really nice to the people who are really nice to us.

  474. But let me ask you a question.

  475. Is there anyone on your heart

  476. who you do not look at as absolutely righteous

  477. and spotless before God?

  478. Is there another human being in your heart,

  479. in your mind,

  480. who you do not look at as absolutely spotless?

  481. And if they don't know Christ,

  482. that they potentially could

  483. and therefore that you should still treat them in that light.

  484. Or are we storing up all the faults that people have,

  485. all the things they've said wrong against us,

  486. all the times they've ticked us off a bit?

  487. You see, Jesus has wiped our slate completely clean

  488. and we have got to do that right now

  489. with anyone we are storing things up about

  490. that we should not be storing up about.

  491. Because in God's sight,

  492. they are completely holy and righteous.

  493. In God's sight,

  494. they are completely holy and righteous.

  495. So if there's anyone in the body of believers

  496. that we have got a problem with,

  497. then we are really having a problem with God

  498. because God has declared them innocent.

  499. God has declared them righteous.

  500. God has declared them pure and faultless.

  501. And that's how we have to treat them

  502. and that's how God expects us to treat them.

  503. So if your enemy is hungry,

  504. give him food to eat.

  505. If he is thirsty,

  506. give him water to drink.

  507. And in doing this,

  508. you will heap burning coals on his head

  509. and the Lord will reward you.

  510. And doing this is a powerful testimony

  511. to the one we worship

  512. and is a form of spiritual warfare.

  513. I think in 2 Corinthians 10,

    2 Corinthians 10:3–4

  514. verses 3 to 4,

  515. it says,

  516. For though we live in the world,

  517. we do not wage war as the world does.

  518. The weapons we fight with

  519. are not the weapons of the world.

  520. On the contrary,

  521. they have divine power

  522. to demolish strongholds.

  523. And we can be very spiritual

  524. and we can say,

  525. well, that's the prayers of the saints.

  526. And I think it definitely includes that.

  527. But I tell you,

  528. when you turn the other cheek

  529. when someone strikes you,

  530. it demolishes strongholds.

  531. When you love those who hate you,

  532. when you bless those who curse you,

  533. when you pray for those who persecute you,

  534. you demolish strongholds.

  535. It is a form of warfare.

  536. Jesus didn't say these things

  537. without demonstrating them in his life.

  538. He demonstrated all these principles

  539. through what he did.

  540. And we might remember

  541. in Matthew chapter 27,

    Matthew 27:12–14

  542. verses 12 to 14,

  543. when he was accused by the chief priests

  544. and the elders,

  545. he gave no answer.

  546. Then Pilate asked him,

  547. Don't you hear the testimony

  548. they are bringing against you?

  549. But Jesus made no reply,

  550. not even to a single charge,

  551. to the great amazement of the governor.

  552. I don't know about you,

  553. but if I was Jesus

  554. and I had people saying to me,

  555. are you the king of the Jews?

  556. I'd start pointing them

  557. to all the miracles I'd done.

  558. I'd start saying,

  559. am I the king?

  560. I mean, have a look.

  561. I walked on water.

  562. I mean, I made the lame walk.

  563. I made the blind see.

  564. I cast demons out of men.

  565. But he doesn't do any of that.

  566. He just says, so you say.

  567. You see, the powers of darkness

  568. are baffled

  569. when we do not wage war

  570. on the same terms

  571. and in the same fashion

  572. that they wage war.

  573. That's what confuses them.

  574. And Jesus said to his disciples,

  575. if anyone would come after me,

  576. he must deny himself,

  577. take up his cross and follow me.

  578. For whoever wants to save his life

  579. will lose it,

  580. but whoever loses his life for me

  581. will find it.

  582. Whoever loses his life for me

  583. will find it.

  584. Are we prepared to do that?

  585. Are we prepared,

  586. just as Jesus set us an example

  587. and going before us,

  588. are we prepared

  589. to follow in that example

  590. and lose our lives

  591. for Christ's sake?

  592. Are we prepared

  593. to suffer ridicule

  594. and meet it with love?

  595. Are we prepared

  596. to bless those who persecute us

  597. and pray for those

  598. who are bad to us?

  599. Are we prepared

  600. if our enemy is hungry

  601. to feed him

  602. or if he is thirsty

  603. to give him a drink?

  604. You see,

  605. as Brian said earlier,

  606. we are in a war.

  607. We are in a war

  608. and the people of this world

  609. are suffering

  610. because they are under

  611. the power of slavery

  612. to fear of death.

  613. And the powers of darkness

  614. use the fact

  615. that there are

  616. handwritten requirements

  617. of the law

  618. which are built up

  619. in their conscience

  620. against them

  621. and they know

  622. that the handwritten

  623. requirements of the law,

  624. the wages of those requirements

  625. is death.

  626. Everyone knows it.

  627. You might have people

  628. saying,

  629. I'm an atheist,

  630. but they know it.

  631. They know it.

  632. We all know

  633. because in our conscience

  634. we know

  635. when we've done

  636. something wrong.

  637. And those things

  638. build up and up

  639. and up and up

  640. and up

  641. and the powers

  642. of darkness

  643. use those things

  644. and constantly

  645. hold them up

  646. to people

  647. to show them

  648. you're going to die,

  649. you're under sin,

  650. you're going to hell

  651. and it keeps them

  652. in that guilt

  653. and it keeps them

  654. pinned down

  655. in a sinful lifestyle.

  656. And the way

  657. to battle it

  658. is to proclaim

  659. that those powers

  660. have been defeated

  661. at the cross of Christ.

  662. That's the irony

  663. is we defeat

  664. those powers

  665. by proclaiming

  666. that they have

  667. been defeated.

  668. It says that

  669. Christ paraded them

  670. and he took

  671. that handwritten

  672. requirements,

  673. that list of

  674. handwritten requirements

  675. and he nailed it

  676. to the cross.

  677. Taking us up

  678. with him

  679. into that cross

  680. and purging us

  681. of all our sin,

  682. all our judgment,

  683. all our guilt.

  684. so that we are

  685. completely pure.

  686. So that we can

  687. live a godly life.

  688. Because the grace

  689. of God

  690. that brings salvation

  691. has appeared

  692. to all men

  693. and it teaches us

  694. to say no

  695. to ungodliness

  696. and worldly passions

  697. while we wait

  698. for the blessed hope,

  699. the glorious appearing

  700. of our great God

  701. and Saviour,

  702. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  703. So my friends,

  704. surrounded by a similar

  705. world that the Christians

  706. were surrounded in then,

  707. there's not as much

  708. overt violence

  709. in our society,

  710. but given the right

  711. pressures,

  712. there would be.

  713. But surrounded

  714. by a pagan society,

  715. we have to be those

  716. whose goodness

  717. is shining out of us,

  718. who are shining

  719. the light of Christ

  720. to a dark

  721. and sinful world.

  722. God bless you.
