  1. Can I put a plug in for working bees too?

  2. In our last parish, the last parish I was in,

  3. we did two a year and working bees were one of the really great fun days of the year

  4. because we put the list up like we've got out here.

  5. We'd offer people the opportunity to take responsibility for one job

  6. so you didn't have to do everything and you didn't have somebody

  7. leaning over your shoulder telling you how to do it.

  8. You could just do it, which was really good.

  9. And we'd have a barbecue or something together in the middle to celebrate,

  10. but just good fun, lots of good conversations,

  11. but really helpful to the overall what's going on around the place.

  12. So I think I know that you'd take a great weight off Dave Lawrence's mind

  13. if you're getting in touch with him and saying,

  14. I can do this job, I'll do this job and split the day up like that,

  15. but I'll have fun as well.

  16. So just great.

  17. I'm going to pray.

  18. Heavenly Father, as we come to your word now

  19. and a passage which in many ways is a difficult passage for us,

  20. please speak to us by your spirit.

  21. Speak to our hearts and minds that you would be transforming us in Christ

  22. and growing us in his image to your glory.

  23. Amen.

  24. Darian Klintos took us into 1 Peter 2 last week

  25. and the first seven verses of chapter 3 were part of the passage

  26. that we were going to deal with and we plan to deal with

  27. and anybody in a small group will know it was part of the same study.

  28. And it's 1 Peter 2 is a passage which tells Christians

  29. how to live submissively under all sorts of governments and employers,

  30. both for good and for bad.

  31. Governments and employers that are good for you,

  32. governments and employers that maybe are quite difficult for you.

  33. And so we were urged to live lives of faithful submission

  34. grounded in the life which Jesus himself lived.

  35. Called to patient endurance

  36. and we are encouraged that it is actually commendable

  37. before God to bear up in the face of unjust suffering.

  38. Now, Darian did a really neat sidestep.

  39. He just stepped right away from the one, the third area of submission,

  40. family life, wives and husbands.

  41. He didn't enter into that, he just left that hanging.

  42. Although, to be fair to him, it was with permission.

  43. And he's gone away for the weekend with Vanessa.

  44. He and Vanessa were going to be here today

  45. but somebody in their family gave them a weekend away up at Terrigal

  46. and we think that's just a blessing for them

  47. and glad for them to be able to enjoy it.

  48. It begins, verse 1, chapter 3.

  49. Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands

  50. so that if any of them do not believe the word

  51. they may be won over without words by the behaviour of their wives

  52. when they see the purity and the reverence of your lives.

  53. We ventured into this passage in Bible study the other week

  54. and one of our lovely women said in really quite a lovely way,

  55. it's very hard to read this passage without it sounding like sit.

  56. So this is not about men and women generally.

  57. You might have a female boss at work.

  58. In fact, your wife might have a higher power job than you

  59. but this is when you come back into a family.

  60. If you've got a female boss at work,

  61. if you work for your wife at work and she's your boss at work,

  62. you will submit to her leadership in the workplace

  63. on the basis of what Peter says in chapter 2.

  64. But chapter 3 is a journey into family life

  65. and this is about submissive lives within the family,

  66. husbands and wives.

  67. Chapter 2 taught that God is a God of order.

  68. He brings peace out of chaos.

  69. He brings restoration to a broken world.

  70. He brings order to society through government.

  71. He brings order to the workplace

  72. and now in chapter 3,

  73. he teaches that God brings order to family life.

  74. He gives us a framework in which to conduct our relationships.

  75. Submission is a dirty word for many of us.

  76. It sounds even worse when it comes from the mouth of a man.

  77. And there are many unhappy overtones and all sorts of issues for us.

  78. But listen to what the Bible says.

  79. Wives,

  80. Wives, be submissive, yield, give way to your husbands.

  81. He has two types of husband and wife.

  82. A husband who isn't a believer and one who is.

  83. And his hope is that a wife with an unbelieving husband

  84. will win him to Christ by her behaviour.

  85. Not by her words,

  86. by her behaviour.

  87. It's a specific example of chapter 2, verse 12.

  88. Living such good lives among the nations

  89. that they may see your good deeds

  90. and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

  91. I've seen this happen.

  92. My best friend was won to Christ

  93. because his wife regarded this first.

  94. He has become a wonderful Christian leader in his family and church

  95. because of his wife's witness to him.

  96. It was a joy for her

  97. when her husband came to Christ and grew in him

  98. and she deliberately stepped back from spiritual leadership in her family

  99. as she encouraged her husband to take up the reins

  100. and to lead spiritually because of her...

  101. She did that because of her relationship with Christ.

  102. I've seen the opposite.

  103. I have seen women in churches

  104. disrespecting their husbands in such a way

  105. that they completely undermine their witness.

  106. They nag them.

  107. They complain about them.

  108. They belittle them.

  109. And then they wonder and wring their hands

  110. when their husbands won't go anywhere near the church.

  111. Wives, in the same way,

  112. be submissive to your husbands

  113. so that if any of them do not believe the word,

  114. they may be won over without words

  115. by the behaviour of their wives

  116. when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

  117. Now, I reckon by about now,

  118. there should be a growing underbelly of what if.

  119. You know, what about my friend who's in this situation

  120. and what about where I've been?

  121. And I just want to say before we go there,

  122. let's read the next bit, verse 3.

  123. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment,

  124. such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewellery and fine clothes.

  125. Instead, it should be that of your inner self,

  126. the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,

  127. which is of great worth in God's sight.

  128. For this is the way the holy women of the past

  129. who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.

  130. They were submissive to their own husbands,

  131. like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master.

  132. I'm hoping that's not contentious,

  133. maybe the last bit, but the bulk of it,

  134. because it's all about inner beauty being much more important than outer show.

  135. And that's totally consistent with the Gospels,

  136. where God always says that what's on the inside matters more than externals.

  137. And to put it crudely, the world's always trying to make,

  138. dress up mutton as lamb.

  139. You go to the top level of the chase and you buy the branded clothes.

  140. Maybe you don't.

  141. Maybe you do.

  142. Or you shop a lower level, something like that, a level lower.

  143. Designer jeans, accessories, having the right look, having the right label.

  144. In some communities, it's all about having the right set of tattoos

  145. and the right set of piercings.

  146. In terms of how we present ourselves to one another.

  147. But Peter says it's what's on the inside that matters, not the outside.

  148. A friend of mine told me about his university ministry.

  149. And this goes back 30 years.

  150. And he was discipling a young man and he was preparing him for leadership

  151. within the university fellowship.

  152. And the young bloke wanted the old bloke's wisdom

  153. about a girl that he was thinking of asking out,

  154. who looked pretty good.

  155. She was the hot one.

  156. And the old bloke said that he thought another woman that they both knew

  157. would make a wonderful partner.

  158. And the young bloke said, but she looks pretty ugly.

  159. Now, I know that woman.

  160. I know the ugly one.

  161. Not my wife.

  162. We both know her.

  163. And I've got to tell you that she is full of inner beauty.

  164. And her inner beauty makes her outer beauty quite lovely as well.

  165. She radiates Christ.

  166. And in that conversation, the young bloke went down a lot of notches

  167. in the eyes of his mentor.

  168. Because all he could see was outer beauty.

  169. He couldn't see the precious beauty and the shine and the witness of the woman

  170. that he called ugly.

  171. Peter says, inner beauty over outward adornment.

  172. And then he says, you are her daughters, speaking about Sarah,

  173. if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

  174. And I think that little line gives away something.

  175. I think it gives away the fact that he understands that there is pain

  176. in what he is teaching here.

  177. Peter understands that a woman might have a whole lot of fears

  178. about submitting to her husband.

  179. And he says, do not give way to fear.

  180. And I'm confident when I talk to this congregation,

  181. just like when I spoke to 8.30 this morning and my wife was sitting there,

  182. that there are women here who know how painful it can be

  183. submitting to a man who thought that it was all about him.

  184. We've had to sort that out in our marriage sometimes.

  185. And I think we'll probably have to do it again.

  186. It's not a problem solved forever and ever.

  187. I sat with a Christian counsellor a while back

  188. and I talked to her about this passage.

  189. I actually said, do I've got to get up and preach this on Sunday?

  190. What am I going to say?

  191. What are a wife's fears in submitting to her husband?

  192. And she said things like having wounded hearts,

  193. wives who've been injured mentally,

  194. wives who've been abused emotionally,

  195. wives who have been mistreated sexually,

  196. wives who have lost a sense of self

  197. as their marriage becomes all about her husband, the husband.

  198. And she said there will be people sitting in your congregation

  199. who will be angered and distressed by the word submission

  200. because they have been hurt.

  201. And she said men and women wrongly interpret submission

  202. as being...

  203. I was going hell for leather making notes while she was talking.

  204. But she said men and women...

  205. ..said men and women wrongly interpret submission

  206. as being a doormat,

  207. doing whatever he asks.

  208. And it's not about that.

  209. We need to be ourselves within our relationship.

  210. We need to be able to say when we're tired

  211. and when we're hurt and when we're lonely.

  212. We need to feel safe with our spouse

  213. to be able to reveal deep needs

  214. and feelings and longings.

  215. And if your spouse opens up

  216. and says things that reflect badly on you,

  217. are you able to hear them

  218. and still affirm your love for them?

  219. Or do you shut them down

  220. because you cannot bear to hear

  221. how you impact on them?

  222. And she said husbands and wives' hearts are sinful.

  223. There's often a struggle over roles and place in a marriage.

  224. She said if people would listen to God's word

  225. and understand that he is a God of order,

  226. marriage can be a delightfully safe place

  227. where a husband and a wife

  228. can know wonderful security

  229. with one another and with God.

  230. A husband who leads and loves,

  231. who brings harmony and peace and safety

  232. as he submits to Christ

  233. and serves his family.

  234. It's really interesting

  235. but Peter speaks a specific word to husbands.

  236. He doesn't say anything to our governments.

  237. He doesn't say anything to employers.

  238. But he does speak to husbands.

  239. Verse 7,

  240. Husbands, in the same way be considerate

  241. as you live with your wives

  242. and treat them with respect

  243. as the weaker partner

  244. and as heirs with you

  245. of the gracious gift of life

  246. so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

  247. Husbands, it's not all about you.

  248. Be considerate to your other.

  249. Treat them with respect.

  250. He states the obvious

  251. to call wives the weaker partner.

  252. It's men who overpower women in violent crime.

  253. Men and women do not compete equally in most sports

  254. because of physical difference.

  255. Women have a body clock

  256. which is attuned to conceiving and bearing children.

  257. Be considerate.

  258. Recognise your wife for who she is.

  259. Love her.

  260. Find out and understand her needs

  261. and her desires

  262. and ask her what her fears are.

  263. Regard her.

  264. Be considerate.

  265. And realise

  266. that in spiritual matters

  267. we are co-heirs

  268. of the gracious gift of life.

  269. We are full equals

  270. in terms of God's salvation

  271. and place in his kingdom.

  272. One of the big fears

  273. of this passage for a wife

  274. is what her husband might do

  275. with this teaching.

  276. So you go home from the sermon this morning

  277. and you march into your house

  278. and you take control

  279. and you rule the roost

  280. and demand what you want

  281. and when you want it

  282. and there are too many stories

  283. of husbands reminding the wife

  284. of what she should be giving him.

  285. My stomach still churns

  286. about the man who said to me,

  287. a Christian man

  288. or the man at church

  289. who said to me

  290. he wasn't getting

  291. what he was entitled to

  292. in his marriage

  293. and he was a Christian man

  294. and he was talking about sex

  295. and he was aggrieved

  296. because he saw it as his right.

  297. You can't take something like that.

  298. It has to be given

  299. and it's not going to be given

  300. in the way that God intended

  301. if it is demanded.

  302. Marriage actually happens

  303. I don't know if you thought of this

  304. but marriage happens

  305. when a wife chooses

  306. to yield to a man

  307. and to accept marriage.

  308. That's one of the reasons

  309. why it's very, very important

  310. that you be careful

  311. about who you say yes to

  312. and do not undersell yourself.

  313. See, I've got a little bet with myself.

  314. I bet 95% of the women

  315. in our church family

  316. who are married

  317. or who have been married

  318. you waited for a goose like me

  319. to summon up the courage

  320. and take the initiative

  321. to ask you.

  322. Is that true?

  323. Anybody ask their husband?

  324. I'm not going to slam you for doing it.

  325. There's nothing wrong with that

  326. but did you do it?

  327. Who took the initiative?

  328. And who responded

  329. to the initiator?

  330. You waited for a man to initiate

  331. you wanted him to lead

  332. if you are still married

  333. I'm sure you would love him to lead

  334. with deep consideration

  335. of who you are

  336. and that may not be so.

  337. And it may be that you live with deep pain

  338. because your husband is failing

  339. to be considerate to you.

  340. And it may also be

  341. that you are a man

  342. who is struggling to lead

  343. in a godly way in your family

  344. because you have a wife

  345. who doesn't think

  346. she should ever give way to you.

  347. My counselling friend said

  348. you have to remember

  349. that both men and women

  350. have sinful hearts

  351. when it comes to responding

  352. to the word of God

  353. and the will of God.

  354. It is a spiritual problem.

  355. Submission doesn't come easily

  356. to any of us

  357. but it can be

  358. an incredible witness

  359. to Christ

  360. and I think you see that

  361. throughout the rest

  362. of chapter 3.

  363. So verse 8

  364. Finally

  365. all of you

  366. live in harmony

  367. with one another.

  368. Be sympathetic

  369. love as brothers

  370. be compassionate

  371. and humble

  372. do not repay evil

  373. with evil

  374. or insult

  375. with insult

  376. but with blessing

  377. because to this

  378. you were called

  379. so that you may

  380. inherit a blessing.

  381. It's actually saying

  382. lives of submission

  383. bring an overall

  384. harmony to relationships.

  385. Remember he's summing up

  386. submission to government

  387. submission in the workplace

  388. submission in the family

  389. and so we are called

  390. to relationships

  391. which are driven

  392. by love

  393. where compassion

  394. and humility

  395. drive our dealings

  396. with each other.

  397. We've been talking

  398. a lot about these things

  399. when speaking about

  400. the core values

  401. of our church.

  402. we've been talking

  403. about things

  404. like humble authenticity

  405. treasuring Jesus

  406. together

  407. servant leadership.

  408. The contrast

  409. is really ugly

  410. revenge

  411. evil for evil

  412. insult for insult

  413. it's all about me

  414. with no love

  415. or care for you.

  416. If we know Christ

  417. our faith

  418. should lead

  419. to a transforming

  420. of our relationships.

  421. And 1 Peter 3

  422. goes on to say

  423. that there is

  424. an even better

  425. foundation

  426. by loving

  427. and submissive

  428. relationships.

  429. It makes us winsome.

  430. It makes us people

  431. that other people

  432. are drawn to

  433. and they want to know

  434. why we are

  435. like we are.

  436. What is it

  437. that's different

  438. about you people?

  439. Verse 14

  440. Even if you suffer

  441. for what is right

  442. you are blessed.

  443. Do not fear

  444. what they fear

  445. do not be frightened

  446. but in your hearts

  447. set apart

  448. Christ as Lord

  449. always be prepared

  450. to give an answer

  451. to everyone

  452. who asks you

  453. to give the reason

  454. for the hope

  455. that you have

  456. but do this

  457. with gentleness

  458. and respect

  459. keeping a clear

  460. conscience

  461. so that those

  462. who speak maliciously

  463. against your good

  464. behaviour in Christ

  465. may be ashamed

  466. of their slander.

  467. Don't fear

  468. what other people

  469. fear

  470. don't be frightened

  471. when a government

  472. official

  473. or an employer

  474. or a spouse

  475. treats you unjustly

  476. in a relationship

  477. do not fear them.

  478. Live with Christ

  479. set apart

  480. as Lord

  481. in your heart.

  482. Whenever we're

  483. oppressed

  484. or experiencing

  485. injustice

  486. he's saying

  487. there's a bigger

  488. reality

  489. Jesus Christ

  490. is Lord

  491. and our experiences

  492. are not outside

  493. of his rule

  494. and they're not

  495. outside of his authority

  496. and Peter reassures

  497. us a number of times

  498. that it is commendable

  499. to God

  500. when we bear up

  501. under injustice

  502. in fact

  503. we walk

  504. in the footsteps

  505. of Christ himself.

  506. I only noticed

  507. it just now

  508. as we read

  509. the first Bible

  510. reading

  511. from Psalm 34

  512. Psalm 34

  513. is quoted

  514. heaps

  515. throughout this passage

  516. but in Psalm 34

  517. he's speaking

  518. to people

  519. who are

  520. bearing injustice

  521. and he's saying

  522. trust God

  523. hang in there

  524. and Peter's doing

  525. exactly the same

  526. here

  527. verse 15

  528. always be prepared

  529. to give an answer

  530. to everyone

  531. who asks you

  532. to give the reason

  533. for the hope

  534. that you have

  535. but do this

  536. with gentleness

  537. and respect

  538. people will notice

  539. our hope

  540. they will see

  541. that we're different

  542. when we endure

  543. injustice

  544. and they will want

  545. to know why

  546. why aren't we afraid

  547. when living

  548. in oppressive

  549. circumstances

  550. enduring difficulty

  551. opens up opportunity

  552. to confess

  553. our faith in Christ

  554. how we handle

  555. difficulty

  556. is a powerful

  557. part of our

  558. witness

  559. in Acts chapter

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  560. 16

  561. Paul and Silas

  562. are unjustly

  563. thrown in prison

  564. because their

  565. preaching's been

  566. bad for business

  567. the silversmiths

  568. aren't able to

  569. sell their little

  570. trinkets

  571. of the temple

  572. of Diana

  573. and so they're

  574. chained to God

  575. and they're singing

  576. praises to God

  577. and singing praises

  578. to God

  579. in the middle

  580. of the night

  581. and an earthquake

  582. brings the jail

  583. down

  584. and the jailer's

  585. about to do

  586. himself in

  587. because he thinks

  588. they've all shot

  589. through

  590. and Paul says

  591. don't do that

  592. we're all here

  593. we haven't gone

  594. he could have

  595. escaped

  596. he could have

  597. justified himself

  598. by thinking

  599. well the earthquake

  600. 's from God's hand

  601. God's tool

  602. to release me

  603. and I'm out of here

  604. but instead

  605. he lived such a good

  606. life before an

  607. unbeliever

  608. that the jailer

  609. was brought to

  610. Christ

  611. he came to

  612. Christ through

  613. Paul and Silas

  614. is suffering

  615. I read a wonderful

  616. little book

  617. recently

  618. Philip Yancey's

  619. you know

  620. what good is God

  621. that's a fairly new

  622. one

  623. it's a kurong

  624. you'll find all

  625. over the place

  626. but the first

  627. chapter is worth

  628. the price of the

  629. book

  630. he says that

  631. Jesus is able

  632. to redeem

  633. evil

  634. so Christ

  635. is not thwarted

  636. by the circumstances

  637. of our lives

  638. he's able to

  639. redeem evil

  640. in your heart

  641. set apart

  642. Christ as Lord

  643. I know a family

  644. living a new

  645. life in Christ

  646. in Queensland

  647. I think they've

  648. been there for

  649. about 12 years

  650. so they've got a

  651. track record

  652. a good track record

  653. and the husband

  654. lived up to his

  655. mother-in-law's

  656. hateful expectations

  657. and I tell you

  658. she was a buzzard

  659. and he was

  660. unfaithful to his

  661. wife

  662. can I say that

  663. yeah she was a

  664. buzzard

  665. she was

  666. he lived up

  667. to the unfaithful

  668. expectations

  669. of his

  670. mother-in-law

  671. he was

  672. unfaithful

  673. to his

  674. wife

  675. he humiliated

  676. his wife

  677. in his

  678. community

  679. by his

  680. behaviour

  681. and she

  682. would have

  683. been

  684. entirely

  685. justified

  686. in leaving

  687. him

  688. but instead

  689. she sought

  690. to honour

  691. Christ

  692. in the

  693. oppressive

  694. circumstances

  695. of her

  696. marriage

  697. and that

  698. man was

  699. brought to

  700. Christ

  701. and he

  702. has grown

  703. in Christ

  704. because of

  705. a wife

  706. who loved

  707. him

  708. despite his

  709. offences

  710. against her

  711. by the

  712. grace

  713. and kindness

  714. of God

  715. she has

  716. modelled

  717. love

  718. and mercy

  719. and forgiveness

  720. in such a way

  721. that he

  722. recommitted

  723. his life

  724. to Christ

  725. and to her

  726. and she

  727. has brought

  728. much hope

  729. to other

  730. women

  731. in circumstances

  732. similar to

  733. her own

  734. but her

  735. hope

  736. was not

  737. in her

  738. cheating

  739. wreck of a

  740. husband

  741. her hope

  742. was in

  743. Christ

  744. who

  745. redeemed

  746. the

  747. evil

  748. in her

  749. life

  750. and in

  751. the

  752. process

  753. redeemed

  754. her

  755. husband

  756. as well

  757. all glory

  758. to the

  759. Lord

  760. Jesus

  761. and that's

  762. how this

  763. whole passage

  764. finishes

  765. it finishes

  766. in the work

  767. of Christ

  768. and with a

  769. powerful reminder

  770. that the whole

  771. created order

  772. will finish

  773. his existence

  774. in submission

  775. to him

  776. verse 18

  777. Christ

  778. died for

  779. sins

  780. once for

  781. all

  782. the

  783. righteous

  784. for the

  785. unrighteous

  786. to bring

  787. you to

  788. God

  789. he was put

  790. to death

  791. in the body

  792. but made

  793. alive by the

  794. spirit

  795. through whom

  796. also he

  797. went and

  798. preached to

  799. the spirits

  800. in prison

  801. who disobeyed

  802. long ago

  803. God

  804. waited

  805. patiently

  806. in the

  807. days of

  808. Noah

  809. while the

  810. ark was

  811. being built

  812. and in

  813. it only a

  814. few people

  815. ate in

  816. all

  817. were saved

  818. through

  819. water

  820. and this

  821. water

  822. symbolises

  823. baptism

  824. that now

  825. saves you

  826. also

  827. not the

  828. removal of

  829. dirt from

  830. the body

  831. but the

  832. pledge of

  833. a good

  834. conscience

  835. towards

  836. God

  837. it saves

  838. you by

  839. the

  840. resurrection

  841. of

  842. Jesus

  843. Christ

  844. who

  845. has

  846. gone

  847. into

  848. heaven

  849. and

  850. is

  851. at

  852. God's

  853. right

  854. hand

  855. with

  856. angels

  857. authorities

  858. and

  859. powers

  860. in

  861. submission

  862. to

  863. him

  864. passages

  865. are

  866. full of

  867. Old

  868. Testament

  869. understandings

  870. particularly

  871. Psalm

  872. 53

  873. 54

  874. and

  875. 61

  876. and

  877. one

  878. line

  879. in

  880. particular

  881. is

  882. perhaps

  883. or

  884. arguably

  885. the

  886. most

  887. difficult

  888. passage

  889. in

  890. the

  891. New

  892. Testament

  893. verse

  894. 19

  895. at

  896. face

  897. value

  898. it

  899. sounds

  900. like

  901. Jesus

  902. went

  903. and

  904. preached

  905. to

  906. the

  907. dead

  908. between

  909. his

  910. death

  911. on

  912. the

  913. cross

  914. and

  915. resurrection

  916. it's

  917. a

  918. verse

  919. that

  920. Roman

  921. Catholics

  922. used

  923. to

  924. justify

  925. their

  926. teaching

  927. on

  928. purgatory

  929. a

  930. place

  931. where

  932. people

  933. go

  934. before

  935. the

  936. final

  937. judgment

  938. of

  939. God

  940. a

  941. place

  942. that

  943. they

  944. can

  945. still

  946. be

  947. redeemed

  948. from

  949. if

  950. they

  951. get

  952. a

  953. change

  954. of

  955. heart

  956. and

  957. it

  958. also

  959. seems

  960. to

  961. fit

  962. with

  963. the

  964. apostles

  965. creed

  966. which

  967. we

  968. often

  969. recite

  970. he

  971. descended

  972. into

  973. hell

  974. and

  975. on

  976. the

  977. third

  978. day

  979. rose

  980. from

  981. the

  982. dead

  983. probably

  984. a

  985. better

  986. translation

  987. is

  988. he

  989. descended

  990. to

  991. the

  992. place

  993. of

  994. the

  995. dead

  996. she

  997. all

  998. and

  999. I

  1000. think

  1001. I

  1002. just

  1003. want

  1004. to

  1005. say

  1006. quickly

  1007. that

  1008. I

  1009. think

  1010. all

  1011. those

  1012. interpretations

  1013. including

  1014. the

  1015. creed

  1016. are

  1017. wrong

  1018. I

  1019. don't

  1020. understand

  1021. everything

  1022. here

  1023. and

  1024. so

  1025. I'll

  1026. tell you

  1027. what

  1028. I

  1029. think

  1030. I

  1031. do

  1032. understand

  1033. and

  1034. leave

  1035. some

  1036. of

  1037. the

  1038. rest

  1039. unsolved

  1040. but

  1041. I

  1042. can

  1043. give

  1044. you

  1045. afterwards

  1046. an

  1047. article

  1048. which

  1049. helped

  1050. me

  1051. in my

  1052. thinking

  1053. for this

  1054. sermon

  1055. and

  1056. maybe

  1057. it's

  1058. helpful

  1059. for

  1060. you

  1061. but

  1062. I

  1063. think

  1064. imprisoned

  1065. spirits

  1066. are

  1067. us

  1068. before

  1069. we

  1070. belong

  1071. to

  1072. Christ

  1073. before

  1074. Christ

  1075. was

  1076. revealed

  1077. in

  1078. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1079. chapter

  1080. 2

  1081. Paul

  1082. says

  1083. you

  1084. me

  1085. and

  1086. everyone

  1087. else

  1088. that's

  1089. everybody

  1090. were

  1091. dead

  1092. in

  1093. their

  1094. trespasses

  1095. and

  1096. sins

  1097. we

  1098. were

  1099. imprisoned

  1100. by

  1101. death

  1102. we

  1103. were

  1104. captive

  1105. to

  1106. the

  1107. grave

  1108. and

  1109. in

  1110. a

  1111. sense

  1112. all

  1113. the

  1114. people

  1115. of

  1116. the

  1117. Old

  1118. Testament

  1119. went

  1120. to

  1121. the

  1122. place

  1123. of

  1124. the

  1125. dead

  1126. Sheol

  1127. without

  1128. seeing

  1129. the

  1130. great

  1131. work

  1132. of

  1133. Christ

  1134. which

  1135. was

  1136. still

  1137. future

  1138. for

  1139. them

  1140. and

  1141. so

  1142. imprisonment

  1143. is a

  1144. way

  1145. of

  1146. referring

  1147. to

  1148. the

  1149. status

  1150. of

  1151. believers

  1152. in

  1153. the

  1154. Old

  1155. Testament

  1156. who

  1157. died

  1158. without

  1159. seeing

  1160. the

  1161. wonderful

  1162. work

  1163. of

  1164. salvation

  1165. which

  1166. God

  1167. did

  1168. in

  1169. the

  1170. death

  1171. and

  1172. resurrection

  1173. and

  1174. ascension

  1175. of the

  1176. Lord

  1177. Jesus

  1178. Christ

  1179. 1

  1180. Peter

  1181. 1

  1182. said

  1183. concerning

  1184. this

  1185. salvation

  1186. the

  1187. prophets

  1188. who

  1189. spoke

  1190. of

  1191. the

  1192. grace

  1193. that

  1194. was

  1195. to

  1196. come

  1197. to

  1198. you

  1199. searched

  1200. intently

  1201. and

  1202. with

  1203. the

  1204. greatest

  1205. care

  1206. trying

  1207. to

  1208. find

  1209. out

  1210. the

  1211. time

  1212. and

  1213. the

  1214. circumstances

  1215. to

  1216. which

  1217. the

  1218. spirit

  1219. of

  1220. Christ

  1221. in

  1222. them

  1223. was

  1224. pointing

  1225. when

  1226. he

  1227. predicted

  1228. the

  1229. sufferings

  1230. of

  1231. Christ

  1232. and

  1233. the

  1234. glories

  1235. that

  1236. would

  1237. follow

  1238. they

  1239. were

  1240. earnestly

  1241. looking

  1242. forward

  1243. for

  1244. what

  1245. God

  1246. was

  1247. going

  1248. to

  1249. do

  1250. without

  1251. actually

  1252. seeing

  1253. it

  1254. Jesus

  1255. arrives

  1256. on the

  1257. scene

  1258. in

  1259. Luke

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  1260. chapter

  1261. 4

  1262. he

  1263. quotes

  1264. Isaiah

  1265. 61

  1266. he

  1267. announces

  1268. his

  1269. ministry

  1270. and

  1271. he

  1272. says

  1273. the

  1274. spirit

  1275. of

  1276. the

  1277. Lord

  1278. is

  1279. on

  1280. me

  1281. because

  1282. he

  1283. has

  1284. anointed

  1285. me

  1286. to

  1287. preach

  1288. good

  1289. news

  1290. to

  1291. the

  1292. poor

  1293. he

  1294. sent

  1295. me

  1296. to

  1297. proclaim

  1298. freedom

  1299. for

  1300. the

  1301. prisoners

  1302. and

  1303. recovery

  1304. of

  1305. sight

  1306. for

  1307. the

  1308. blind

  1309. to

  1310. release

  1311. the

  1312. oppressed

  1313. to

  1314. proclaim

  1315. the

  1316. year

  1317. of

  1318. the

  1319. Lord's

  1320. favour

  1321. and

  1322. then

  1323. in

  1324. Luke

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  1325. chapter

  1326. 7

  1327. Jesus

  1328. confirms

  1329. his

  1330. ministry

  1331. to

  1332. John

  1333. the

  1334. Baptist

  1335. John's

  1336. getting

  1337. the

  1338. wobblies

  1339. is

  1340. Jesus

  1341. the

  1342. one

  1343. who

  1344. was

  1345. to

  1346. come

  1347. he's

  1348. sitting

  1349. in

  1350. his

  1351. jail

  1352. cell

  1353. he's

  1354. thinking

  1355. are

  1356. you

  1357. the

  1358. one

  1359. or

  1360. should

  1361. we

  1362. be

  1363. expecting

  1364. another

  1365. and

  1366. Jesus

  1367. sends

  1368. a

  1369. message

  1370. back

  1371. to

  1372. him

  1373. go

  1374. back

  1375. and

  1376. report

  1377. to

  1378. John

  1379. what

  1380. you

  1381. have

  1382. seen

  1383. and

  1384. what

  1385. you

  1386. have

  1387. heard

  1388. the

  1389. blind

  1390. receive

  1391. sight

  1392. the

  1393. lame

  1394. walk

  1395. those

  1396. who

  1397. have

  1398. leprosy

  1399. are

  1400. cured

  1401. the

  1402. deaf

  1403. hear

  1404. the

  1405. dead

  1406. are

  1407. raised

  1408. and

  1409. good

  1410. news

  1411. is

  1412. preached

  1413. to

  1414. the

  1415. poor

  1416. and

  1417. in

  1418. both

  1419. places

  1420. Jesus

  1421. quotes

  1422. or

  1423. alludes

  1424. to

  1425. Isaiah

  1426. 61

  1427. so

  1428. the

  1429. New

  1430. Testament

  1431. is

  1432. telling

  1433. us

  1434. in

  1435. a

  1436. number

  1437. of

  1438. places

  1439. including

  1440. here

  1441. in

  1442. 1

  1443. Peter

  1444. that

  1445. the

  1446. Spirit

  1447. of

  1448. Christ

  1449. proclaimed

  1450. Jesus

  1451. in

  1452. the

  1453. Old

  1454. Testament

  1455. Isaiah

  1456. 61

  1457. is

  1458. now

  1459. fulfilled

  1460. in

  1461. the

  1462. ministry

  1463. of

  1464. Jesus

  1465. the

  1466. hope

  1467. of

  1468. the

  1469. Old

  1470. Testament

  1471. believers

  1472. has

  1473. now

  1474. become

  1475. reality

  1476. through

  1477. Jesus

  1478. the

  1479. Spirit

  1480. of

  1481. Christ

  1482. empowered

  1483. Jesus

  1484. ministry

  1485. during

  1486. his

  1487. time

  1488. on

  1489. earth

  1490. the

  1491. Spirit

  1492. of

  1493. Christ

  1494. raised

  1495. him

  1496. from

  1497. the

  1498. dead

  1499. after

  1500. Calvary

  1501. Christ

  1502. has

  1503. gone

  1504. into

  1505. heaven

  1506. and

  1507. everything

  1508. is

  1509. in

  1510. submission

  1511. to

  1512. him

  1513. and

  1514. so

  1515. Noah

  1516. pops

  1517. up

  1518. and

  1519. Noah

  1520. is

  1521. an

  1522. example

  1523. it

  1524. depends

  1525. where you

  1526. put

  1527. the

  1528. full

  1529. stop

  1530. here

  1531. but

  1532. Noah

  1533. is

  1534. an

  1535. example

  1536. of

  1537. patient

  1538. waiting

  1539. judgment

  1540. that

  1541. ark

  1542. the

  1543. whole

  1544. community

  1545. is

  1546. hearing

  1547. the

  1548. gospel

  1549. God's

  1550. judgment

  1551. is

  1552. coming

  1553. save

  1554. yourself

  1555. from

  1556. the

  1557. wrath

  1558. to

  1559. come

  1560. they

  1561. all

  1562. hear

  1563. the

  1564. gospel

  1565. and

  1566. it's

  1567. as

  1568. they

  1569. will

  1570. this

  1571. is

  1572. stupid

  1573. is

  1574. God's

  1575. word

  1576. going

  1577. to

  1578. be

  1579. fulfilled

  1580. but

  1581. the

  1582. day

  1583. comes

  1584. and

  1585. eight

  1586. people

  1587. are

  1588. saved

  1589. God's

  1590. word

  1591. is

  1592. faithful

  1593. and

  1594. those

  1595. who

  1596. trust

  1597. in

  1598. him

  1599. were

  1600. absolutely

  1601. safe

  1602. chapter

  1603. three

  1604. is

  1605. an

  1606. incredibly

  1607. difficult

  1608. passage

  1609. you know

  1610. submission

  1611. to

  1612. wives

  1613. by

  1614. wives

  1615. to

  1616. husband

  1617. followed

  1618. by

  1619. Jesus

  1620. preaching

  1621. to

  1622. imprisoned

  1623. spirits

  1624. it's

  1625. a

  1626. doozy

  1627. and

  1628. I've

  1629. rushed

  1630. across

  1631. the

  1632. last

  1633. bit

  1634. but

  1635. I

  1636. want

  1637. you

  1638. to

  1639. see

  1640. the

  1641. big

  1642. picture

  1643. again

  1644. submission

  1645. is

  1646. not

  1647. a

  1648. dirty

  1649. word

  1650. the

  1651. believers

  1652. are

  1653. urged

  1654. to

  1655. live

  1656. wisely

  1657. and

  1658. harmoniously

  1659. in a

  1660. world

  1661. in which

  1662. they do

  1663. not

  1664. belong

  1665. strangers

  1666. and

  1667. aliens

  1668. we

  1669. belong

  1670. to

  1671. the

  1672. Lord

  1673. Jesus

  1674. and

  1675. our

  1676. journey

  1677. here

  1678. strangers

  1679. and

  1680. aliens

  1681. as

  1682. we

  1683. are

  1684. may

  1685. experience

  1686. a

  1687. peaceable

  1688. government

  1689. we

  1690. may

  1691. experience

  1692. a

  1693. peaceable

  1694. workplace

  1695. we

  1696. may

  1697. experience

  1698. a

  1699. peaceable

  1700. marriage

  1701. or we

  1702. may

  1703. not

  1704. we

  1705. may

  1706. experience

  1707. injustice

  1708. from

  1709. government

  1710. injustice

  1711. in

  1712. the

  1713. workplace

  1714. injustice

  1715. in

  1716. marriage

  1717. and

  1718. if

  1719. we

  1720. do

  1721. how

  1722. we

  1723. handle

  1724. it

  1725. is

  1726. a

  1727. powerful

  1728. part

  1729. of

  1730. our

  1731. witness

  1732. to

  1733. the

  1734. Lord

  1735. Jesus

  1736. Christ

  1737. he

  1738. is

  1739. the

  1740. one

  1741. who

  1742. powerfully

  1743. releases

  1744. us

  1745. from

  1746. the

  1747. captivity

  1748. of

  1749. sin

  1750. and

  1751. death

  1752. by

  1753. his

  1754. resurrection

  1755. he

  1756. is

  1757. the

  1758. one

  1759. who

  1760. now

  1761. reigns

  1762. supreme

  1763. over

  1764. all

  1765. creation

  1766. including

  1767. our

  1768. oppressors

  1769. strong

  1770. strong

  1771. overtones

  1772. of

  1773. philippians

  1774. chapter

  1775. two

  1776. at

  1777. the

  1778. name

  1779. of

  1780. Jesus

  1781. every

  1782. knee

  1783. will

  1784. bow

  1785. in

  1786. heaven

  1787. and

  1788. on

  1789. earth

  1790. and

  1791. under

  1792. the

  1793. earth

  1794. and

  1795. every

  1796. tongue

  1797. confess

  1798. that

  1799. Jesus

  1800. Christ

  1801. is

  1802. Lord

  1803. to

  1804. the

  1805. glory

  1806. of

  1807. God

  1808. the

  1809. father

  1810. I

  1811. think

  1812. Peter

  1813. is

  1814. saying

  1815. that

  1816. God

  1817. knows

  1818. every

  1819. difficulty

  1820. that

  1821. we

  1822. live

  1823. with

  1824. now

  1825. he

  1826. promises

  1827. that

  1828. we

  1829. will

  1830. be

  1831. safe

  1832. with

  1833. him

  1834. then

  1835. and

  1836. there

  1837. is

  1838. every

  1839. reason

  1840. for

  1841. hope

  1842. and

  1843. patient

  1844. endurance

  1845. even

  1846. in the

  1847. most

  1848. difficult

  1849. of

  1850. circumstances

  1851. now

  1852. Amen
