  1. Thanks, Amy. Let's pray and ask God to illuminate his words in our hearts.

  2. Father, these words belong to you, and we believe that you speak to us today by your

  3. spirit, and we pray, Father, that these words might cut us deep inside of us, so they might

  4. change us. We pray that through our hearing of your word, that Jesus' name would be honoured

  5. among us and among the nations, so that all glory might go to you, and we pray this in

  6. Jesus' name. Amen. Years ago, I was involved in a beach mission to a little place called

  7. Windang down the south coast. Yeah? You know Windang? Yeah, it's a pretty dirty little town,

  8. if I could say so. High youth unemployment. It's the first time that I've met Satan worshippers,

  9. and it was really interesting. I was involved with the mission to the adults. There was a,

  10. somebody was giving a talk, and I think it was a heroin addict and dealer and all that sort

  11. of stuff, and at the end of it all, one of the young blokes sort of stood up and said,

  12. you know, I'll believe you if your God comes down and he lights my cigarette. He was going

  13. to say something else, but he thought, you know, he didn't want to offend our Christian

  14. sensitivity. And there was a very interesting proposition to prove the truthfulness of the

  15. gospel. Of course, we were unable to do it, and he left. It might very well be a good question,

  16. and that is, how do we show our peers, people around us, God? Where is our God to be found?

  17. That might be a question for non-Christians, but it might be a question for Christians as well,

  18. too. If you're going through a hard time, difficult patch in your life, you might be asking this

  19. question, well, where is God to be found? Do I need to storm heaven in order to see God?

  20. We see today that there are two significant problems, two significant problems for the presence

  21. of God. The first one is the corruption of his people. That is how our passage begins.

  22. God's people is just terrible. There's nothing to command God's people, and we can see that

  23. the corruption of his people starts from its head, and we can see that in chapter 56, the last few verses.

  24. Verse 10,

  25. Come, all you beasts of the field, come and devour all you beasts of the forest. So it is an invitation to summon

  26. by God to the animals to consume his people. Why? Verse 10, Israel's watchmen are blind.

  27. They all lack knowledge. They are like mute dogs. They can't bark. They lie around, dream, scratch their

  28. tummies. They love to sleep. They're dogs with mighty appetites. They never have enough. They're shepherds who lack

  29. understanding, or they all turn to their own way. Each seeks his own gain. Come, each one cries. Let me get

  30. wine. Let us drink our fill of beer, and tomorrow we'll be like today, or even better.

  31. A terrible picture of what Israel is like. The head is corrupt. Verse 10, the watchmen of Israel.

  32. I mean, who were the watchmen presumably in that time? You've got fortress, fortified cities,

  33. and people were assigned to care for the city by warning the city of its danger. The watchmen,

  34. you know, they stand at the turrets and watch for impending danger. It's a great, one of the,

  35. I imagine, prerequisite of being a watchmen is that you have good eyesight. I couldn't be a good watchman

  36. because I've got terrible eyesight. But these watchmen, the watchmen of Israel, they were blind.

  37. They couldn't see. How could they possibly save Israel from danger? They were ignorant and they were lazy.

  38. And unlike me, who's got a genetic thing with my eyesight, these people were willfully blind. They were

  39. deliberately ignorant. And we can see the source of their ignorance and blindness in verses 11 and 12.

  40. They were ignorant and they were blind because they love so much. They were lovers. They love their work.

  41. They love their families. They love themselves. They comfort their ambitions, their hobbies. They love their drink.

  42. They love everything except for the people they were supposed to love and protect.

  43. And as a result, the people of God is devout. It is a sick head, but the body is equally sick.

  44. Have a look at chapter 57.

  45. The righteous perish and no one ponders it in his heart. Devout men are taken away and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.

  46. Those who walk uprightly, however, enter into peace. They find rest as they lie in death.

  47. You know, the whole place is so bad that even when the little good disappears, no one notices.

  48. This is how bad things were. And the accusation becomes more direct.

  49. But you, not just the head, but the body, you, everyone, come here, you sons of a sorceress,

  50. you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes.

  51. Whom are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue?

  52. Are you not a brood of rebels, offspring of liars?

  53. You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree.

  54. You sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags.

  55. The idol among the smooth stones of the ravines, they are your portion.

  56. They are your lot.

  57. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings and offered grain offerings.

  58. In the light of these things, should I relent?

  59. Et cetera, et cetera.

  60. This is what the people of God is like.

  61. They are children of sorceress and prostitutes and adulterers.

  62. It's not so much an indictment on their parents.

  63. It's really talking about what they are like.

  64. So if you are a son of rebellion, it's not saying that rebellion gives birth to you,

  65. but you have the characteristic.

  66. You have the family trait of rebellion.

  67. So in other words, you are a rebel.

  68. If you are...

  69. So these people, they are children of unfaithfulness.

  70. They are characterized by their unworthiness, their unfaithfulness.

  71. They are spiritually promiscuous.

  72. They are sons of liars.

  73. They are people who are deceitful.

  74. They lie.

  75. They mock.

  76. They stick their tang out.

  77. At God, presumably.

  78. At the righteous.

  79. Mind you, it is not that they are irreligious.

  80. Have a look at verses 5 to 8 again.

  81. This is a people full of religion.

  82. But they sacrifice to idols.

  83. Religion is everywhere, from on top of the mountain to the ravines.

  84. They sacrifice everything, even their children.

  85. In verses 9 and 10, we are told that they went down to Molech,

  86. and they send their ambassadors to afar.

  87. They were so eager to seek out their spiritual lovers that they will go far and wide.

  88. Later on, God accused them to acknowledge the futility and the hopelessness of their idolatry,

  89. something that they refused to see.

  90. They just don't see that as a complete waste of time and effort.

  91. And they keep going back to their idols, hoping to get something from them.

  92. Of course, just as an interlude, we might observe that this is not just what the people of God did thousands of years ago.

  93. It's something that we are engaged in in our own time.

  94. In our city, Christians, and maybe even our church, that we prostitute ourselves to our idols.

  95. I don't know whether I mentioned this before.

  96. It is interesting the way Isaiah describes their idols.

  97. Have a look at verse 11.

  98. Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have been false to me,

  99. and have neither remembered me, nor pondered this in your hearts?

  100. Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?

  101. The motivation for their idolatry was, in fact, fear.

  102. Whom have you so dreaded and feared?

  103. I can't remember when I said this in this congregation.

  104. The way that you can tell what you worship is by what you fear.

  105. Whatever you have nightmares about, that is the thing that you worship.

  106. That is your God.

  107. If you're afraid of being alone, if you're afraid of losing your financial security,

  108. if whatever it is that you're afraid of, that is your God.

  109. And we prostitute ourselves to our gods.

  110. We sell our souls for all sorts of things.

  111. For pleasure.

  112. For a relationship.

  113. For approval.

  114. For a pat on the back by our boss.

  115. For applause from our peers.

  116. We even place our children on the altar, as it were,

  117. and sacrifice them to the God of success.

  118. I come from a culture where people would send the, you know,

  119. there was someone in my church, previous church,

  120. who offered to coach my four-year-old, Maths.

  121. And I thought about taking her on her offer.

  122. We put our children on the altar of success.

  123. Not just academic, but sporting, or their self-esteem, their popularity.

  124. And we might ask the question,

  125. when we sacrifice to our idols,

  126. when we lay ourselves and our future and our children on those altars,

  127. we better make sure that it's worth it.

  128. You know, when you make that decision to go out with that non-Christian boy or girl,

  129. you better make sure that you're selling your soul for something that is worthwhile.

  130. He better be worth it for your soul.

  131. That's an enormous problem, isn't it?

  132. That the people of God could be so corrupt from the top to the bottom.

  133. But there is a bigger problem.

  134. There is a bigger problem.

  135. And it's a little bit subtle.

  136. It's a little bit hard to notice.

  137. And I might need to point it out for you to...

  138. The bigger problem here is the context.

  139. It's the context.

  140. Why is that a problem?

  141. It's hard.

  142. I know it's hard when we go through from week to week.

  143. Isaiah, it sort of all gets a bit lost.

  144. We don't know when...

  145. Just to refresh your memory,

  146. Isaiah, the book itself, is divided,

  147. or could be divided into two parts.

  148. The first part is really looking at the impending judgment of God

  149. for the idolatry of Israel.

  150. That's the first part, first 39 chapters.

  151. God warns his people,

  152. if you don't quit your idolatry and prostituting and all this stuff,

  153. I'm going to come and smash you.

  154. And I'm going to give you a warning.

  155. This is what's going to happen to the Northern Kingdom.

  156. The Assyrians are going to come,

  157. and they're going to smash the North.

  158. And that's what happened.

  159. But I'm going to spare you, the South Jerusalem,

  160. from this, but you need to turn.

  161. They didn't.

  162. And God says, what I'm going to do is I'm going to send something worse than the Assyrians,

  163. the Babylonians.

  164. They're going to come,

  165. and they're going to destroy everything that represents me.

  166. They're going to come and destroy the temple,

  167. the symbolic presence,

  168. my presence,

  169. and they're going to take you away from the land,

  170. the symbol of my blessing and protection to you.

  171. Everything that reminds you of me is going to be taken away from you.

  172. A little bit like Eden, you remember.

  173. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  174. Adam and Eve cast out from the garden.

  175. They're not allowed to return

  176. because there's an angel with a flaming sword.

  177. Everything,

  178. the people of God will be cast out once again,

  179. exiled from the presence of God.

  180. That's the first 39 chapters,

  181. but that's not the end of the book.

  182. There's the second part of Isaiah.

  183. There will be a return,

  184. a return from exile.

  185. There will be salvation.

  186. The people would come back to the land,

  187. the temple would be rebuilt on Zion,

  188. and the nations would come stream to Zion.

  189. This is the second part of the book.

  190. Where is chapter 57 in?

    Isaiah 57 chapter mention

  191. The second part of the book.

  192. It sounds a lot like the first part of the book.

  193. Doesn't it?

  194. Here's the people of God

  195. being accused of exactly the same thing

  196. before the Babylonian exile.

  197. They're going back to their old ways.

  198. It reminds me a little bit

  199. of what happened to Noah.

  200. You remember.

  201. You know,

  202. God was sick of the wickedness

  203. and the evil of our race,

  204. the human race,

  205. and he said,

  206. I'm going to wipe out everyone,

  207. but I'm going to save Noah.

  208. I'm going to save Noah

  209. and create a new people out of him.

  210. So everything on the face of the earth

  211. was wiped out,

  212. except for Noah and his family,

  213. the righteous man.

  214. And God says,

  215. I'm going to make a promise to you.

  216. I'm not going to destroy the earth

  217. by flood water ever again.

  218. Even though,

  219. this is Genesis chapter 8, 21.

    Genesis 8 chapter mention

  220. Do you remember what he says?

  221. Even though every inclination of his heart

  222. is evil from youth.

  223. Everything,

  224. every inclination,

  225. everything that you desire,

  226. your proclivities,

  227. everything,

  228. is evil

  229. from when you were a child.

  230. The judgment of God,

  231. it seems,

  232. did not solve the problem.

  233. The earth was almost destroyed,

  234. but what did not change

  235. was the human heart.

  236. And there it is.

  237. Again, here,

  238. the exile of God's people

  239. to a foreign land,

  240. everything that represents God

  241. is taken away from them.

  242. They brought back into the land.

  243. Did that change their heart?

  244. Clearly not.

  245. From the head to the toe,

  246. still sick.

  247. Something has to be done.

  248. Something much more dramatic

  249. than an exile and a return.

  250. Which takes us to chapter 57,

  251. verse 14.

  252. The highlight,

  253. in my view,

  254. of our passage.

  255. The Lord says,

  256. and it will be said

  257. on a day in the future,

  258. build up,

  259. build up,

  260. prepare the road,

  261. remove the obstacles

  262. out of the way

  263. of my people.

  264. There will be a great

  265. returning.

  266. returning.

  267. Instead of turning away

  268. from God,

  269. people,

  270. his people will now

  271. turn to God.

  272. But there is a greater

  273. reversal in 15.

  274. And this was,

  275. this verse just blew me away

  276. during the course of this week

  277. when I read it.

  278. So come and have a look at it.

  279. It says,

  280. for,

  281. for,

  282. because,

  283. this is what the high

  284. and lofty one says,

  285. he who lives

  286. in eternity,

  287. whose name is holy,

  288. I live in a high

  289. and holy place,

  290. but,

  291. also with him

  292. who is contrite

  293. and lowly in spirit.

  294. I live with him

  295. to revive the spirit

  296. of the lowly

  297. and to revive the heart

  298. of the contrite.

  299. This is the other

  300. great reversal.

  301. Did you notice

  302. how God is described?

  303. High

  304. and lofty,

  305. dwelling

  306. in eternity.

  307. When I was teaching

  308. scripture,

  309. I get this question

  310. a lot,

  311. and I think I got this

  312. question from one

  313. of my daughters.

  314. The question is,

  315. who created God?

  316. Have you ever got that one?

  317. Who created God?

  318. Do you know why

  319. they ask this question?

  320. Because it is impossible

  321. for us who do not dwell

  322. in eternity

  323. to imagine one

  324. who has no beginning

  325. and no ending.

  326. Therefore,

  327. God must have been created

  328. like we are.

  329. God who dwells

  330. in eternity,

  331. who has no beginning,

  332. so no one created him,

  333. and who has no ending,

  334. so that no one

  335. will judge him.

  336. He is the

  337. holy one.

  338. The holy one.

  339. You know,

  340. in the Old Testament,

  341. there's the temple

  342. divided into all

  343. these sections,

  344. and,

  345. you know,

  346. there are all these

  347. rituals associated

  348. with the temple.

  349. There's blood

  350. everywhere,

  351. splatters,

  352. you know,

  353. and every time

  354. somebody comes

  355. near the temple,

  356. something has to die.

  357. You know,

  358. imagine that sort

  359. of church.

  360. and right in front

  361. of this temple,

  362. you know,

  363. if we were to put

  364. a sign there,

  365. you know what the sign

  366. would say?

  367. Stay away.

  368. That's what the temple,

  369. the sign in front

  370. of the temple

  371. would say.

  372. Keep out,

  373. stay away,

  374. you are not

  375. welcomed.

  376. That is the temple

  377. of God.

  378. That's what it means

  379. to be holy.

  380. Did you realize that?

  381. No.

  382. Every word

  383. that you could

  384. possibly come up

  385. with to describe

  386. the difference

  387. between you

  388. and God

  389. is he,

  390. in verse 15.

  391. The lofty one,

  392. the one who dwells

  393. on high

  394. in eternity.

  395. He is so different,

  396. so separate

  397. from us.

  398. You know,

  399. just to reinforce

  400. the point,

  401. do you remember

  402. Isaiah,

  403. what he says

  404. back in chapter 6

  405. when he saw

  406. the one

  407. on the throne.

  408. Chapter 6,

  409. you remember

  410. we looked at this

  411. during the course

  412. of our series.

  413. In the year

  414. that King Uzziah

  415. died,

  416. as I wrote,

  417. I saw the Lord

  418. seated on the throne,

  419. high and exalted,

  420. similar to the language,

  421. and the train

  422. of his robe

  423. filled the temple.

  424. Above him

  425. were seraph,

  426. which literally

  427. means the burning ones.

  428. each with six wings,

  429. with two wings

  430. that cover the faces,

  431. two that cover the feet,

  432. and two,

  433. with two,

  434. they were flying.

  435. The created ones

  436. who have not fallen,

  437. these are unsinful ones,

  438. they couldn't even look

  439. at the presence of God,

  440. they had to cover the faces,

  441. and they were calling out

  442. to one another,

  443. holy,

  444. holy,

  445. holy,

  446. it's the Lord Almighty,

  447. the whole earth

  448. is full of his glory.

  449. The sound of the voices,

  450. the doorposts,

  451. and the threshold shook,

  452. and the temple

  453. was filled with smoke,

  454. and Isaiah says,

  455. I'm a dead person.

  456. Woe to me,

  457. I'm ruined,

  458. for I am a man

  459. of unclean lips,

  460. and I live among

  461. the people

  462. of unclean lips.

  463. My eyes have seen

  464. the King,

  465. the God Almighty.

  466. He is dead

  467. because he is unholy,

  468. unlike the Lord.

  469. This is the same God,

  470. and yet,

  471. in verse 15,

  472. did you notice

  473. the great reversal?

  474. But,

  475. he who dwells

  476. in eternity,

  477. he will also

  478. dwell

  479. with the contrite.

  480. Did you notice that?

  481. You see,

  482. the sign didn't change.

  483. The sign to the temple

  484. didn't say,

  485. welcome.

  486. That's not the change.

  487. Because what does it say?

  488. Verse 15.

  489. Who's dwelling

  490. with whom?

  491. Sorry,

  492. this isn't rhetorical,

  493. this is actually

  494. inviting you

  495. to participate.

  496. Who's dwelling

  497. with whom

  498. in verse 15?

  499. Yeah.

  500. I can't see who said it,

  501. but yes,

  502. that's exactly right.

  503. The unimaginable

  504. is not that sinful men

  505. and women

  506. and boys and girls

  507. are invited

  508. into the temple.

  509. That is not

  510. what's happening.

  511. Rather,

  512. the holy God

  513. is coming

  514. out from his temple

  515. to dwell

  516. amongst

  517. his people.

  518. See,

  519. we take this

  520. so for granted.

  521. It is such

  522. a new idea.

  523. God is coming

  524. to dwell

  525. among his

  526. people.

  527. He will step

  528. out from heaven

  529. to do that.

  530. And as a result,

  531. there is

  532. life.

  533. Verses 16

  534. to 19.

  535. I will not

  536. accuse forever,

  537. nor will I

  538. always be angry.

  539. For then

  540. the spirit of man

  541. will grow faint

  542. before me,

  543. the breath of man

  544. that I have created.

  545. I was enraged

  546. by his sinful greed.

  547. I punished him

  548. and hid my face

  549. in anger,

  550. yet he kept on

  551. in his willful ways.

  552. I have seen

  553. his ways,

  554. but

  555. I will heal him.

  556. I will guide him

  557. and restore comfort

  558. to him,

  559. creating praise

  560. on the lips

  561. of the mourners

  562. in Israel.

  563. Peace,

  564. peace to those

  565. far and near,

  566. says the Lord,

  567. and I

  568. will heal him.

  569. This

  570. is what

  571. God will do.

  572. He was

  573. angry,

  574. but his

  575. anger will be

  576. turned.

  577. There is

  578. healing

  579. and comfort

  580. and peace.

  581. Everything

  582. will be

  583. reconciled

  584. and restored.

  585. Things

  586. will be

  587. as they

  588. should be.

  589. The disease

  590. that has

  591. caused the

  592. people of God

  593. to keep

  594. sinning,

  595. the thing

  596. that has

  597. led them

  598. to their

  599. idolatry

  600. again and

  601. again and

  602. the judgment

  603. of God

  604. will finally

  605. be healed.

  606. Because

  607. what is

  608. their problem?

  609. Ultimately

  610. is not just

  611. the external,

  612. ultimately

  613. is

  614. their

  615. hearts.

  616. the

  617. problem

  618. with the

  619. world

  620. is

  621. here.

  622. And the

  623. Lord

  624. promised

  625. he needed,

  626. how could

  627. a holy

  628. God dwell

  629. among sinful

  630. people,

  631. even when

  632. they're forgiven?

  633. They need

  634. to be

  635. changed

  636. in such

  637. a way

  638. that they

  639. will not

  640. sin

  641. anymore.

  642. cleanse.

  643. And the

  644. only way

  645. that that

  646. happens

  647. is if

  648. their

  649. heart

  650. itself

  651. gets

  652. ripped

  653. out

  654. and

  655. a

  656. new

  657. heart

  658. gets

  659. given.

  660. And this

  661. is what

  662. Jeremiah

  663. says,

  664. Jeremiah

  665. 31,

  666. 31 to

  667. 33,

  668. behold,

  669. the days

  670. are coming,

  671. says the

  672. Lord,

  673. when I

  674. will make

  675. a new

  676. covenant

  677. with the

  678. house of

  679. Israel.

  680. I

  681. will put

  682. my

  683. law

  684. in

  685. them.

  686. I

  687. will

  688. write

  689. it

  690. on

  691. their

  692. hearts

  693. and

  694. I

  695. will

  696. be

  697. their

  698. God

  699. and

  700. they

  701. will

  702. be

  703. my

  704. people.

  705. One

  706. day

  707. I

  708. will

  709. give

  710. them

  711. the

  712. ability

  713. to

  714. obey

  715. my

  716. laws.

  717. Ezekiel

  718. says,

  719. a new

  720. heart

  721. I

  722. will

  723. give

  724. you,

  725. a new

  726. spirit

  727. I

  728. will

  729. put

  730. within

  731. you.

  732. I

  733. will

  734. take

  735. out

  736. of

  737. your

  738. flesh

  739. a

  740. heart

  741. of

  742. stone

  743. and

  744. give

  745. you

  746. a

  747. heart

  748. of

  749. flesh.

  750. I

  751. will

  752. put

  753. my

  754. spirit

  755. within

  756. you.

  757. The

  758. way

  759. he's

  760. going

  761. to

  762. do

  763. it

  764. is

  765. he's

  766. going

  767. to

  768. put

  769. his

  770. spirit

  771. in

  772. them.

  773. His

  774. spirit

  775. will

  776. change

  777. their

  778. heart.

  779. They're

  780. all

  781. saying

  782. the

  783. same

  784. thing

  785. as

  786. I

  787. Jeremiah

  788. Ezekiel.

  789. They see

  790. the time

  791. that is

  792. coming

  793. when the

  794. sick,

  795. disobedient,

  796. high-hearted

  797. people

  798. will be

  799. supernaturally

  800. changed.

  801. Their

  802. hearts

  803. will be

  804. changed

  805. and God

  806. will give

  807. them the

  808. ability

  809. to live

  810. new

  811. lives.

  812. This

  813. is when

  814. the

  815. lofty

  816. one,

  817. the one

  818. who dwells

  819. in

  820. eternity

  821. can now

  822. dwell with

  823. them.

  824. Not

  825. just

  826. saving

  827. his

  828. people

  829. from

  830. exile,

  831. but

  832. transforming

  833. them

  834. so that

  835. they can

  836. return

  837. to him

  838. so that

  839. the

  840. holy

  841. one

  842. can

  843. dwell

  844. among

  845. sinful,

  846. corrupt

  847. people.

  848. Three

  849. conclusions,

  850. really hard,

  851. quickly,

  852. because I

  853. just noticed

  854. I got a

  855. call from

  856. Jan,

  857. and that

  858. is making

  859. me very

  860. nervous.

  861. Firstly,

  862. first

  863. conclusion is

  864. where is

  865. God to

  866. be found?

  867. Where is

  868. God to

  869. be found?

  870. Is it

  871. the case?

  872. Could I

  873. have shown

  874. the young

  875. man where

  876. God could

  877. be found?

  878. Well,

  879. yes.

  880. He who

  881. dwells in

  882. lofty

  883. places,

  884. in some

  885. respect,

  886. this young

  887. man could

  888. never have

  889. ascended to

  890. heaven to

  891. meet God.

  892. And yet,

  893. this is a

  894. God who

  895. could be

  896. found,

  897. who could

  898. be approached.

  899. Instead of

  900. a place,

  901. like a

  902. temple,

  903. like a

  904. church,

  905. he's to

  906. be found

  907. in Jesus.

  908. I wonder

  909. whether

  910. sometimes you

  911. feel the

  912. pressure

  913. yourself to

  914. experience the

  915. presence of

  916. God, to

  917. demonstrate his

  918. power to

  919. other people.

  920. Well, I

  921. think the

  922. word to

  923. us is

  924. show where

  925. God is in

  926. Jesus,

  927. not in

  928. things that

  929. are necessarily

  930. clever and

  931. impressive.

  932. Where is God

  933. to be found?

  934. He is to be

  935. found in

  936. Jesus.

  937. Secondly,

  938. what sort

  939. of people

  940. do you

  941. think will

  942. dwell with

  943. God or

  944. God dwell

  945. with them?

  946. You notice

  947. here it's not

  948. the strong

  949. people, not

  950. the worthy

  951. people, not

  952. the religious

  953. people.

  954. They were

  955. religious.

  956. They were

  957. very religious.

  958. I just want

  959. to take you

  960. very quickly

  961. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  962. chapter 1

  963. from verse

  964. 10.

  965. This is the

  966. accusation that

  967. the Lord has

  968. directed to

  969. his people,

  970. the religious

  971. people.

  972. Chapter 1

  973. verse 10,

  974. the same sort

  975. of accusation.

  976. Hear the

  977. word of

  978. the Lord,

  979. you rulers

  980. of Sodom.

  981. Listen to

  982. the law of

  983. our God,

  984. you people

  985. of Gomorrah.

  986. The multitude

  987. of your

  988. sacrifices,

  989. what are they

  990. to me?

  991. Says the

  992. Lord.

  993. I have

  994. more than

  995. enough

  996. burnt

  997. offerings

  998. of rams

  999. and the

  1000. fed of

  1001. fathed

  1002. animals.

  1003. I have

  1004. no

  1005. pleasure

  1006. in the

  1007. blood

  1008. of

  1009. bulls

  1010. and

  1011. lambs

  1012. and

  1013. goats.

  1014. When

  1015. you come

  1016. to appear

  1017. before me,

  1018. who has

  1019. asked this

  1020. of you,

  1021. this trampling

  1022. of my

  1023. cords?

  1024. Stop

  1025. bringing

  1026. meaningless

  1027. offerings.

  1028. Your

  1029. incense is

  1030. detestable

  1031. and your

  1032. pointed

  1033. feasts

  1034. my soul

  1035. hates.

  1036. They

  1037. become a

  1038. burden

  1039. to me.

  1040. I'm

  1041. weary

  1042. of

  1043. bearing

  1044. them.

  1045. When

  1046. you

  1047. spread

  1048. out

  1049. your

  1050. hands

  1051. in

  1052. prayer,

  1053. I

  1054. will

  1055. hide

  1056. my

  1057. eyes

  1058. from

  1059. you.

  1060. Even

  1061. if you

  1062. offer

  1063. many

  1064. prayers,

  1065. I

  1066. will

  1067. not

  1068. listen.

  1069. Your

  1070. hands

  1071. are

  1072. full

  1073. of

  1074. blood.

  1075. This

  1076. is an

  1077. indictment

  1078. on

  1079. Israel

  1080. in her

  1081. religion.

  1082. Imagine

  1083. if God

  1084. were saying

  1085. this,

  1086. your

  1087. singing

  1088. every

  1089. Sunday

  1090. makes

  1091. me

  1092. sick.

  1093. Makes

  1094. me

  1095. sick.

  1096. Who

  1097. me

  1098. a

  1099. favor

  1100. by

  1101. putting

  1102. money

  1103. on

  1104. the

  1105. offer

  1106. tree

  1107. back?

  1108. Your

  1109. money

  1110. makes

  1111. me

  1112. ill.

  1113. I

  1114. can't

  1115. bear

  1116. to

  1117. touch

  1118. it.

  1119. I

  1120. wish

  1121. you

  1122. would

  1123. stop

  1124. doing

  1125. it.

  1126. I

  1127. can't

  1128. stand

  1129. your

  1130. wicked

  1131. Bible

  1132. studies.

  1133. I

  1134. hate

  1135. your

  1136. singing,

  1137. your

  1138. services,

  1139. especially

  1140. your

  1141. Christmas

  1142. and

  1143. Easter

  1144. service.

  1145. In

  1146. fact,

  1147. frankly,

  1148. they

  1149. are a

  1150. burden

  1151. to

  1152. me,

  1153. and

  1154. I'm

  1155. sick

  1156. of

  1157. carrying

  1158. it.

  1159. I've

  1160. had

  1161. enough

  1162. of

  1163. your

  1164. prayers

  1165. for

  1166. so

  1167. long

  1168. that

  1169. I

  1170. have

  1171. stopped

  1172. listening

  1173. to

  1174. you.

  1175. Imagine

  1176. that.

  1177. Could you

  1178. imagine

  1179. if this

  1180. was said

  1181. of a

  1182. church,

  1183. not ours,

  1184. of course,

  1185. the

  1186. Presbyterians?

  1187. You

  1188. know,

  1189. I wonder

  1190. whether

  1191. that's

  1192. what we

  1193. think is

  1194. our

  1195. problem

  1196. with

  1197. God.

  1198. If

  1199. we

  1200. do

  1201. more

  1202. ministry,

  1203. or maybe

  1204. it's

  1205. somebody

  1206. else's

  1207. fault

  1208. that

  1209. we

  1210. don't

  1211. experience

  1212. God.

  1213. You

  1214. see,

  1215. what

  1216. does

  1217. the

  1218. Lord

  1219. require

  1220. of

  1221. his

  1222. people?

  1223. Is

  1224. his

  1225. sacrifices?

  1226. Psalm 51,

  1227. 17.

  1228. It's not

  1229. your

  1230. sacrifice

  1231. that I

  1232. desire.

  1233. The

  1234. sacrifice

  1235. of the

  1236. Lord

  1237. is a

  1238. broken

  1239. and

  1240. contrite

  1241. heart.

  1242. The

  1243. two

  1244. men

  1245. who

  1246. went

  1247. to

  1248. the

  1249. temple,

  1250. there's

  1251. a

  1252. Pharisee

  1253. and

  1254. there's

  1255. a

  1256. tax

  1257. collector.

  1258. Who

  1259. left

  1260. the

  1261. temple

  1262. justified.

  1263. The

  1264. one

  1265. who

  1266. threw

  1267. himself

  1268. at

  1269. the

  1270. mercy

  1271. of

  1272. God.

  1273. This

  1274. is

  1275. what

  1276. the

  1277. Lord

  1278. desired,

  1279. not

  1280. your

  1281. religion.

  1282. He

  1283. desires

  1284. you to

  1285. be

  1286. broken,

  1287. to

  1288. recognize

  1289. that

  1290. you

  1291. are

  1292. a

  1293. sinner,

  1294. so

  1295. that

  1296. you

  1297. might

  1298. throw

  1299. yourself

  1300. down

  1301. at

  1302. his

  1303. feet

  1304. for

  1305. his

  1306. mercy.

  1307. And

  1308. it

  1309. is

  1310. there

  1311. that

  1312. you

  1313. will

  1314. find

  1315. mercy.

  1316. Lastly,

  1317. being

  1318. mission

  1319. month,

  1320. we

  1321. come

  1322. back

  1323. to

  1324. mission.

  1325. Of

  1326. course,

  1327. it

  1328. was

  1329. quite

  1330. disappointing

  1331. nobody

  1332. says,

  1333. oh,

  1334. you

  1335. know,

  1336. we

  1337. really

  1338. motivated

  1339. for

  1340. global

  1341. missions

  1342. since

  1343. looking

  1344. at

  1345. Isaiah.

  1346. Sad,

  1347. really.

  1348. But if

  1349. you notice

  1350. chapter 57,

  1351. how does

  1352. it end?

  1353. end?

  1354. How does

  1355. it end?

  1356. It ends

  1357. with a

  1358. warning.

  1359. But notice

  1360. in verse

  1361. 19,

  1362. creating

  1363. praise on

  1364. the lips

  1365. of the

  1366. mourners

  1367. in Israel,

  1368. peace,

  1369. peace to

  1370. those far

  1371. and near,

  1372. says the

  1373. Lord,

  1374. and I

  1375. will heal

  1376. them.

  1377. Far

  1378. and near.

  1379. The message

  1380. for those

  1381. who can

  1382. experience

  1383. the presence

  1384. of God.

  1385. Far

  1386. and near.

  1387. Not

  1388. just near,

  1389. far.

  1390. It sort

  1391. of makes

  1392. me think,

  1393. wow,

  1394. you know,

  1395. God sees

  1396. beyond the

  1397. generation

  1398. in his

  1399. time.

  1400. That his

  1401. purpose is

  1402. to save

  1403. the nations

  1404. beyond the

  1405. wars of

  1406. Israel.

  1407. And it is

  1408. being fulfilled.

  1409. Us sitting

  1410. here in

  1411. Sydney,

  1412. more than

  1413. 2,700

  1414. years later,

  1415. have been

  1416. saved by

  1417. him.

  1418. Did you

  1419. know that

  1420. global

  1421. mission is

  1422. part of

  1423. God's

  1424. plans and

  1425. purpose for

  1426. the world?

  1427. God's

  1428. love

  1429. and it

  1430. will not

  1431. fail.

  1432. It will

  1433. not fail

  1434. even if you

  1435. don't give

  1436. one single

  1437. cent to

  1438. it and

  1439. if you're

  1440. not part

  1441. of it.

  1442. You're not

  1443. doing him

  1444. a favor

  1445. if you

  1446. don't

  1447. pledge.

  1448. In fact,

  1449. what God

  1450. does is he

  1451. includes us

  1452. in his

  1453. wonderful

  1454. plans so

  1455. that we

  1456. can be

  1457. blessed,

  1458. so that

  1459. the presence

  1460. of the

  1461. Lord will

  1462. be all

  1463. over the

  1464. world,

  1465. not just

  1466. amongst us.

  1467. Wouldn't

  1468. it be

  1469. wonderful to

  1470. see God's

  1471. presence in

  1472. the Middle

  1473. East?

  1474. That people

  1475. come to

  1476. experience the

  1477. forgiveness and

  1478. the presence of

  1479. the one who's

  1480. created them and

  1481. he forgives

  1482. them?

  1483. Do you think

  1484. he could do

  1485. it?

  1486. Do you

  1487. want to be

  1488. blessed,

  1489. to be

  1490. included as

  1491. part of

  1492. that work

  1493. so that

  1494. in 10,000

  1495. years' time

  1496. when we

  1497. stand shoulder

  1498. to shoulder

  1499. with our

  1500. Arab brothers

  1501. and sisters

  1502. we can be

  1503. giving praise

  1504. to our

  1505. Lord Jesus

  1506. Christ?

  1507. That's what

  1508. Mission Month

  1509. is about.

  1510. That's what

  1511. the 29th

  1512. is about.

  1513. It's saying

  1514. that we

  1515. believe that

  1516. this is God's

  1517. plan for the

  1518. world and

  1519. it will not

  1520. fail and

  1521. we would

  1522. love to be

  1523. part of

  1524. this.

  1525. Would you

  1526. like to be

  1527. part of

  1528. it?
