  1. There is something majestic about the book of Isaiah.

  2. It asks us to imagine the creation and then the recreation of the entire world.

  3. It evokes the historical periods of the 8th century BC and then into the exile and beyond.

  4. It asks us to imagine that the very heavens and earth are taking part in the drama of Israel's history.

  5. It begins in chapter 1 verse 2 with heaven and earth called to bear witness.

  6. Hear, O heavens, listen, O earth.

  7. And it finishes in verse 22 with a new heaven and a new earth.

  8. As the new heavens and the new earth that I will make endure before me, declares the Lord, so will your name and descendants endure.

  9. And so Isaiah takes us from the beginning of history to the end of all things, from creation to the recreation of God's universe.

  10. It insists that God is doing something for which even the ends of the earth wait.

  11. God has an all-encompassing purpose and it unravels for us page after page in Isaiah.

  12. Of course, in unraveling God's great plans and purpose for his creation of people for all of history,

  13. we naturally get a magnificent vision of God.

  14. God's purposes, his actions reveal God, reveal himself.

  15. And you immediately notice in Isaiah just how great and big this God is.

  16. His plan is all-pervasive.

  17. His rule is all-encompassing.

  18. And if those things don't stagger us, then Isaiah clearly reveals the magnificence of God in passages like chapter 6.

  19. I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.

  20. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings.

  21. With two wings, they covered their faces.

  22. With two, they covered their feet.

  23. And with two, they were flying.

  24. And they were calling to one another, holy, holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty.

  25. The whole earth is filled with his glory.

  26. And in the last chapter, we are given another glimpse of the grandeur of this God.

  27. This is what the Lord says.

  28. Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool.

  29. It is the only place in the Bible where the earth is described as God's footstool.

  30. It is almost 6,500 kilometers straight through.

  31. It is 40,000 kilometers if you decide to go around.

  32. It weighs something like 6,000,000,000,000 tons.

  33. It has a surface area of 510,000,000 square kilometers, a volume of around 10,000,000,000 cubic kilometers.

  34. It spins at 1,600 kilometers an hour.

  35. And God calls it his footstool.

  36. This is my footstool.

  37. God sits on his throne in the heavens and he rests his feet on the earth.

  38. This is the magnificence of the God that we come to worship this morning.

  39. The God who calls us to tremble at his word.

  40. Of course, the doctrine of God is given a few more clues as you move on into the next verse.

  41. Verse 2.

  42. Everything in this footstool that God calls the earth, that we call the earth, is made by the hand of God.

  43. Everything owes his existence to this God.

  44. He is the God who sits on the throne and rests his feet on the earth.

  45. He is the God who brought all things into being.

  46. The sun.

  47. The moon.

  48. The stars.

  49. The smallest part.

  50. Mount Everest.

  51. The weirdest creature in the depths of the sea.

  52. Delicate flowers.

  53. Noamble fall.

  54. The tallest redwood tree.

  55. The Amazon jungle.

  56. The Kalahari Desert.

  57. The most gorgeous supermodel.

  58. The soaring eagle.

  59. The brightest mind.

  60. The best preacher.

  61. The successful entrepreneur.

  62. The most influential church.

  63. They are just a few of the wonders that he has made.

  64. The whole earth is full of the glory of God.

  65. The whole earth is full of the glory of God.

  66. And yet, as wonderful as all these things are, in this thing that God calls his footstool, there is one thing that draws the gaze of God.

  67. This is the one I esteem.

  68. He who is humble and contrite in the spirit and travels at times.

  69. Having gaze upon the magnificence of this God.

  70. Having gaze upon the magnificence of this God who sits on his throne with his feet resting on the earth.

  71. They do what Isaiah did in chapter 6.

  72. He says,

  73. He says,

  74. He says,

  75. He says,

  76. He says,

  77. He says,

  78. He says,

  79. flows out of a broken and a contrite heart,

  80. a humble heart.

  81. And this is the one who draws the gaze

  82. of the eternal God,

  83. whose feet rest on the earth.

  84. The alternative to true worship

  85. is put before us there in verse 2.

  86. Again, let me read to you.

  87. This is the one I esteem.

  88. He who is humble and contrite in spirit

  89. and trembles at my word,

  90. but whoever sacrifices a bull

  91. is like one who kills a man,

  92. whoever offers a lamb like one who breaks a dog's neck,

  93. whoever makes a grain offering like one who presents pig's blood,

  94. and whoever burns memorial incense like one who worships an idol.

  95. They have chosen their own ways

  96. and their souls delight in their abominations.

  97. A humble and contrite heart and a trembling

  98. at the word of God has been exchanged for a worship,

  99. a false worship,

  100. which is equal to religion and rituals and rites.

  101. This is the people of God

  102. that is spoken about here in Isaiah 66.

  103. Not the pagan nations.

  104. They didn't listen.

  105. They didn't tremble at the word of God.

  106. They didn't bow in humble submission to God and his purposes.

  107. And they went their own way.

  108. They did evil and they chose what displeases God

  109. and it was hidden.

  110. Their evil was hidden under the veneer of worship.

  111. Now, of course, Isaiah is not against worship here in these verses.

  112. He wasn't against sacrifices.

  113. He wasn't against the temple.

  114. In fact, the rebuilding of the temple

  115. occupied the people of God for the best part of 20 years.

  116. And when they slackened off in rebuilding the temple,

  117. he sent prophets to tell them,

  118. don't slacken off and get going with it.

  119. Yet in these verses,

  120. the temple and their rituals and religion

  121. are spoken of with extreme reserve.

  122. The temple was a good thing.

  123. But Isaiah was painfully aware,

  124. painfully aware of the capacity of human beings to misuse it,

  125. to focus on the temple and its rituals and its rites

  126. and not the God of the temple.

  127. He was aware of the human tendency to exchange true worship,

  128. true, humble, God-honoring worship within pure worship,

  129. a worship that is wrapped up in performing rituals

  130. and minimum effort and minimal reflection.

  131. Isaiah understood very well

  132. that physical restoration of the temple was not enough.

  133. Spiritual restoration was what was needed.

  134. Spiritual renewal,

  135. unless they had spiritual renewal,

  136. the future would just simply rehash the sins of the past.

  137. Isaiah was not against the temple.

  138. He was against ecclesiasticism,

  139. that ugly distortion of true worship

  140. worship of God does not flow out of the heartfelt contrition before God.

  141. For God,

  142. no matter what building it's in,

  143. no matter what form it takes,

  144. what order it takes,

  145. no matter how seamless the transitions,

  146. how well it is read,

  147. no matter how great the singing or accurate the theology

  148. or historically sensitive,

  149. it becomes no better than pagan superstition.

  150. And it angers God

  151. and it calls forth

  152. His righteous judgment.

  153. And so there is a warning here

  154. in Isaiah 66.

  155. It is so easy to exchange true worship

  156. for false worship.

  157. On the surface,

  158. it may look like the same.

  159. The warning here is like Israel,

  160. we can hide our evil

  161. and our refusal to listen

  162. and obey the word of God

  163. in beautiful worship.

  164. In beautiful worship.

  165. In beautiful worship.

  166. Worship.

  167. False worship

  168. becomes a substitute

  169. for listening to God,

  170. to faith in God,

  171. to obedient,

  172. trembling at His word

  173. and the pursuit of His purposes.

  174. The warning here is not to box God

  175. within the building,

  176. not to box God

  177. within a few religious activities,

  178. potentially good activities,

  179. but true worship

  180. is all of life

  181. at the feet of the one

  182. on whose feet

  183. He rests on the earth.

  184. The feet of this God

  185. in humble,

  186. contrite submission.

  187. True worship,

  188. my friends,

  189. is God's grand design

  190. for His universe.

  191. True worship is what

  192. God wants for us.

  193. God's plan

  194. for the world

  195. that He's made,

  196. the world that He calls

  197. His footstool,

  198. is that people would see

  199. His glory

  200. and gather to Him

  201. and bow at His feet

  202. who sit on the earth.

  203. Throughout all history

  204. and eternity to come,

  205. God's design for people

  206. is worship.

  207. The worship of Him

  208. in humble submission.

  209. As it says in verse 22,

  210. As the new heavens

  211. and the new earth

  212. that I will make

  213. endure before me,

  214. so will your name

  215. and descendants endure.

  216. From one new moon

  217. to another

  218. and from one Sabbath

  219. to another,

  220. all mankind

  221. will come

  222. and bow down

  223. before me

  224. at my feet.

  225. in humble submission.

  226. In the new heavens

  227. and the new earth,

  228. the redeemed

  229. of the entire

  230. human race

  231. will offer

  232. unending worship

  233. at the feet

  234. of their Creator.

  235. It's the place

  236. we call heaven.

  237. Isaiah leaves us

  238. in no doubt

  239. at all

  240. that the key

  241. to God's purpose

  242. is God's perfect King,

  243. the Lord Jesus Christ

  244. and how eloquently

  245. and simply

  246. the Apostle John

  247. puts it

  248. in John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  249. Isaiah saw

  250. Jesus' glory

  251. and spoke

  252. about Him.

  253. You see,

  254. the invincible

  255. purpose of God

  256. is that the gospel

  257. of the glory

  258. of Christ

  259. spread to all

  260. the peoples

  261. of the world

  262. so that they might

  263. come and bow

  264. in worship,

  265. in humble submission

  266. to this God.

  267. It's everywhere

  268. in the Bible.

  269. It's the promise

  270. of Philippians 2

  271. who being in very

  272. nature God,

  273. speaking about Jesus here,

  274. being in very

  275. nature God,

  276. did not consider

  277. equality with God

  278. something to be grasped

  279. but made himself

  280. nothing,

  281. taking the very

  282. nature of a servant,

  283. being made in human

  284. likeness and being

  285. found in appearance

  286. as a man.

  287. He humbled himself

  288. and became obedient

  289. to death,

  290. even death on a cross

  291. and therefore God

  292. exalted him

  293. to the highest place,

  294. put him on a throne

  295. that is,

  296. and gave him the name

  297. that is above every name

  298. that at the name

  299. of Jesus

  300. every knee should bow

  301. and every tongue

  302. confess

  303. confess

  304. that Jesus

  305. Christ

  306. is Lord

  307. to the glory

  308. of God the Father.

  309. It was the promise

  310. of the Old Testament,

  311. Psalm 22,

  312. all the ends

  313. of the earth

  314. will remember

  315. and turn to the Lord

  316. and the families

  317. of the nations

  318. will bow down

  319. before him

  320. for dominion

  321. belongs to the Lord

  322. and he rules

  323. over all the nations.

  324. It was the promise

  325. of Jesus

  326. to his disciples

  327. in Matthew 24

  328. and this gospel

  329. of the kingdom

  330. will be preached

  331. in the whole world

  332. as a testimony

  333. to all nations

  334. and the end

  335. will come.

  336. It was the design

  337. of the cross

  338. according to Revelation 5

  339. and they sang

  340. a new song,

  341. you are worthy

  342. to take the scroll

  343. and to open its seal

  344. because you were slain

  345. and with your blood

  346. you purchased men

  347. for God

  348. from every tribe

  349. and language

  350. and people

  351. and nation.

  352. It was the final command

  353. of the risen

  354. all authority

  355. of Christ

  356. according to Matthew 28.

  357. Then Jesus came to them

  358. and said

  359. all authority

  360. in heaven

  361. and on earth

  362. has been given to me

  363. therefore go

  364. and make disciples

  365. of all nations

  366. baptizing them

  367. in the name

  368. of the Father

  369. and the Son

  370. and the Holy Spirit

  371. and teaching them

  372. to obey everything

  373. I have commanded you

  374. and surely

  375. I am with you always

  376. to the very ends

  377. of the age.

  378. It was the design

  379. sorry

  380. it was the divine purpose

  381. of the sending

  382. and filling

  383. of the Holy Spirit

  384. according to Acts 1

  385. but you will receive power

  386. when the Holy Spirit

  387. comes on you

  388. and you will be

  389. my witnesses

  390. in Jerusalem

  391. in all Judea

  392. and Samaria

  393. to the ends

  394. of the earth.

  395. The invincible

  396. purpose of God

  397. is that the gospel

  398. of the glory

  399. of Christ

  400. spread to the peoples

  401. of this world

  402. that they might come

  403. and they might see

  404. the glory of Christ

  405. and bow at his feet

  406. in humble contrition.

  407. This is God's

  408. grand design

  409. for his world.

  410. It always has been

  411. and it always will be

  412. and the task

  413. is not yet done.

  414. 2,000 years

  415. after Jesus

  416. gave his great commission

  417. to his disciples

  418. 6,645

  419. of the world's

  420. 16,350

  421. people groups

  422. are either

  423. barely reached

  424. or not reached

  425. at all.

  426. that equates

  427. to

  428. approximately

  429. 40.1%

  430. of this world

  431. which equates

  432. to 2.84

  433. billion people

  434. who have either

  435. never heard of Jesus

  436. or the witness

  437. of Christ

  438. is even barely

  439. there at all.

  440. Why?

  441. After 20

  442. centuries

  443. is the task

  444. not

  445. finished?

  446. It's not because

  447. of the lack

  448. of money.

  449. I want to say

  450. it's because

  451. we've got too much.

  452. The comforts

  453. of the West

  454. have made us

  455. soft

  456. and cautious

  457. and fearful

  458. and indulgent

  459. and self-protecting

  460. instead of tough

  461. and risk-taking

  462. and bold

  463. and self-controlled

  464. and self-sacrificing.

  465. You see

  466. many of these

  467. least reached

  468. 6,645

  469. peoples

  470. are religiously

  471. unsympathetic

  472. to Christian

  473. missions.

  474. That means

  475. that we need

  476. to go to

  477. these people

  478. with the gospel

  479. and it will

  480. be dangerous

  481. and it will

  482. be costly

  483. to finish

  484. this task

  485. some of us

  486. and some

  487. of our children

  488. need to be

  489. killed.

  490. but we

  491. are so

  492. infatuated

  493. with our

  494. comforts

  495. and our

  496. securities

  497. that we

  498. have exchanged

  499. true worship

  500. and God's

  501. agenda for

  502. false worship

  503. and we

  504. hide our

  505. sinfulness

  506. by a

  507. veneer

  508. of temple

  509. worship.

  510. that is

  511. what Israel

  512. did

  513. and they

  514. were judged

  515. for it.

  516. They had

  517. their temple

  518. and their

  519. rituals

  520. and they

  521. didn't care

  522. a rip

  523. about the

  524. nations.

  525. and so

  526. let us

  527. not forget

  528. the somber

  529. word of

  530. Jesus

  531. in John

    John 12 chapter mention

  532. chapter 12.

  533. I tell you

  534. the truth

  535. unless a

  536. kernel of

  537. wheat falls

  538. to the

  539. ground

  540. and dies

  541. it remains

  542. only a

  543. single

  544. seed

  545. but if

  546. it dies

  547. it produces

  548. many seeds

  549. the man

  550. who loves

  551. his life

  552. will lose

  553. it

  554. while the

  555. man who

  556. hates his

  557. life in

  558. this world

  559. will keep

  560. it for

  561. eternal

  562. life.

  563. In other

  564. words

  565. a fruitful

  566. life

  567. and an

  568. eternal

  569. life

  570. come

  571. from

  572. this

  573. dying

  574. like a

  575. grain

  576. of

  577. wheat

  578. and

  579. hating

  580. your

  581. life

  582. in

  583. this

  584. world.

  585. More

  586. and more

  587. I am

  588. persuaded

  589. by the

  590. scriptures

  591. that God's

  592. design for

  593. the completion

  594. of his

  595. global

  596. plan

  597. and the

  598. consummation

  599. of his

  600. purposes

  601. includes

  602. the suffering

  603. of his

  604. people.

  605. To put it

  606. more plainly

  607. and specifically

  608. God's

  609. plan

  610. is that

  611. his purpose

  612. triumph

  613. through the

  614. suffering

  615. of his

  616. people.

  617. I don't

  618. just mean

  619. that the

  620. suffering

  621. is a

  622. consequence

  623. of being

  624. obedient to

  625. God's

  626. mission.

  627. I mean

  628. that suffering

  629. is one of

  630. Christ's

  631. strategies

  632. for the

  633. success

  634. of his

  635. mission.

  636. Jesus

  637. said to

  638. his

  639. disciples

  640. as he

  641. sent

  642. them

  643. out

  644. in

  645. Matthew

  646. 10

  647. I am

  648. sending

  649. you

  650. out

  651. like

  652. sheep

  653. amongst

  654. wolves.

  655. There is

  656. no doubt

  657. what happens

  658. to sheep

  659. in the

  660. midst

  661. of wolves

  662. and Paul

  663. confirmed

  664. the reality

  665. for us

  666. in Romans

  667. 8

  668. as it is

  669. written

  670. for your

  671. sake

  672. we face

  673. death

  674. all day

  675. long.

  676. We are

  677. considered

  678. as sheep

  679. to be

  680. slaughtered.

  681. And Jesus

  682. continues

  683. in Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  684. chapter 10

  685. be on

  686. your guard

  687. against

  688. men

  689. they will

  690. hand you

  691. over to

  692. the local

  693. councils

  694. and flog

  695. you in

  696. their

  697. synagogues.

  698. On my

  699. account

  700. you will

  701. be brought

  702. before governors

  703. and kings

  704. as witnesses

  705. to them

  706. and to the

  707. Gentiles.

  708. Did you

  709. notice there

  710. that the

  711. witness before

  712. the governors

  713. and kings

  714. is not

  715. merely a

  716. result or

  717. a consequence

  718. it is a

  719. design.

  720. you will

  721. be brought

  722. before governors

  723. and kings

  724. as

  725. a witness

  726. to them.

  727. Suffering

  728. was not

  729. just a

  730. consequence

  731. of our

  732. Lord's

  733. obedience

  734. and his

  735. mission

  736. it was

  737. the central

  738. strategy

  739. of his

  740. mission.

  741. Jesus

  742. calls us

  743. to join

  744. him on

  745. the Calvary

  746. road

  747. to take

  748. up our

  749. cross

  750. to hate

  751. our lives

  752. in this

  753. world

  754. to fall

  755. to the

  756. ground

  757. like a

  758. seed

  759. and die

  760. that others

  761. might

  762. live.

  763. We are

  764. not above

  765. our

  766. master.

  767. To be

  768. sure our

  769. suffering

  770. does not

  771. atone for

  772. anyone's

  773. sins

  774. but it

  775. is a

  776. deeper

  777. way of

  778. doing

  779. mission

  780. than we

  781. realize.

  782. And unless

  783. we think

  784. this way

  785. of saying

  786. it aligns

  787. it,

  788. the suffering

  789. work of

  790. God's

  791. people too

  792. closely,

  793. to the

  794. suffering

  795. of our

  796. Savior,

  797. listen to

  798. the decisive

  799. word on

  800. this from

  801. Paul,

  802. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  803. chapter 1,

  804. now I

  805. rejoice in

  806. what was

  807. suffered for

  808. you and

  809. I fill up

  810. in my

  811. flesh what

  812. is still

  813. lacking in

  814. regard to

  815. Christ's

  816. afflictions for

  817. the sake of

  818. his body

  819. which is the

  820. church.

  821. In his

  822. sufferings,

  823. Paul is

  824. filling up

  825. what is

  826. lacking in

  827. Christ's

  828. afflictions for

  829. the church.

  830. Not that

  831. Paul's

  832. suffering

  833. atones for

  834. sin or

  835. propitiates

  836. wrath,

  837. or vindicates

  838. divine justice

  839. in passing

  840. over sins

  841. as Jesus'

  842. death did,

  843. but they

  844. show the

  845. unreached

  846. peoples of

  847. the world

  848. the sufferings

  849. of Christ.

  850. Paul's

  851. missionary

  852. suffering is

  853. God's

  854. design to

  855. complete the

  856. sufferings of

  857. Christ by

  858. making them

  859. more visible

  860. and personal

  861. and precious

  862. to those to

  863. whom he

  864. died.

  865. God, what

  866. I'm saying

  867. is this,

  868. that when

  869. a prosperity

  870. preacher flies

  871. his private

  872. jet into a

  873. poverty-stricken

  874. country to

  875. preach the

  876. gospel and

  877. promise the

  878. poor that if

  879. they believe in

  880. Jesus, they

  881. will be rich.

  882. They are not

  883. just getting a

  884. few things

  885. wrong, they

  886. are destroying

  887. the very

  888. foundations of

  889. the gospel.

  890. And so I

  891. say this very

  892. sober word

  893. to myself,

  894. to you,

  895. some of my

  896. brothers and

  897. sisters,

  898. some Pauls,

  899. who love

  900. their comforts

  901. and their

  902. securities

  903. and are

  904. consistently

  905. tempted with

  906. them,

  907. God's plan

  908. is that his

  909. gospel-spreading

  910. purpose triumph

  911. through the

  912. suffering of

  913. his people.

  914. At the

  915. heart of

  916. true biblical

  917. missions,

  918. both for

  919. those who

  920. go and

  921. those who

  922. stay, is

  923. an eagerness

  924. to live

  925. simply and

  926. to give

  927. lavishly and

  928. to suffer in

  929. doing it.

  930. At the

  931. heart of

  932. true biblical

  933. missions is

  934. suffering, not

  935. merely as a

  936. result of

  937. proclamation, but

  938. as the

  939. means of

  940. proclamation.

  941. Unless a

  942. grain of

  943. wheat falls

  944. to the

  945. ground and

  946. dies, it

  947. remains only

  948. a single

  949. seed, but

  950. if it

  951. dies, it

  952. produces

  953. many seeds.

  954. things.

  955. On

  956. holidays,

  957. recently I

  958. read a

  959. biography on

  960. the life of

  961. Adoniram

  962. Judson.

  963. I'm very

  964. pleased to

  965. know that

  966. Nick and

  967. Sam have

  968. named

  969. little

  970. Judson

  971. after this

  972. man.

  973. When

  974. Judson,

  975. not this

  976. one,

  977. Adoniram

  978. Judson,

  979. entered

  980. Burma in

  981. July 1813,

  982. it was

  983. hostile and

  984. utterly

  985. unreached

  986. place.

  987. It

  988. probably

  989. would have

  990. been

  991. considered a

  992. closed

  993. country

  994. today.

  995. All the

  996. previous

  997. missionaries

  998. had died

  999. or had

  1000. left, but

  1001. Judson went

  1002. there with

  1003. his 23-year-old

  1004. wife of 17

  1005. months.

  1006. He was

  1007. 24 years

  1008. old and he

  1009. worked there

  1010. for 38

  1011. years with

  1012. only one

  1013. trip home

  1014. after he'd

  1015. been there

  1016. for 33

  1017. years.

  1018. He never

  1019. saw his

  1020. parents or

  1021. his brothers

  1022. again.

  1023. And the

  1024. price he

  1025. paid in

  1026. that 38

  1027. years was

  1028. immense.

  1029. His

  1030. suffering

  1031. was

  1032. immense.

  1033. He was a

  1034. grain of

  1035. wheat that

  1036. fell to

  1037. the ground

  1038. and died

  1039. and oh

  1040. how often

  1041. he died.

  1042. He died

  1043. to the

  1044. prestige of

  1045. being offered

  1046. the best

  1047. pulpit in

  1048. Boston.

  1049. He died

  1050. to his

  1051. personal

  1052. like of

  1053. cleanliness

  1054. and hygiene.

  1055. He died

  1056. to good

  1057. food,

  1058. clean water

  1059. and a

  1060. comfortable

  1061. environment.

  1062. He died

  1063. to the

  1064. prospects of

  1065. wealth and

  1066. the trappings

  1067. of wealth.

  1068. He allowed

  1069. his two

  1070. wives and

  1071. his six

  1072. children to

  1073. die.

  1074. He was

  1075. in prison

  1076. for nearly

  1077. two years

  1078. with his

  1079. feet hanging

  1080. in the sky

  1081. and having

  1082. rats eat

  1083. his head

  1084. at night.

  1085. and after

  1086. 38 years

  1087. of church

  1088. planning,

  1089. of translating

  1090. the Bible

  1091. for the

  1092. Burmese

  1093. church and

  1094. writing an

  1095. English Burmese

  1096. dictionary for

  1097. future

  1098. missions and

  1099. his many,

  1100. many deaths

  1101. day in,

  1102. day out,

  1103. at 15 minutes

  1104. after 4 on

  1105. Friday afternoon,

  1106. April 12,

  1107. 1815,

  1108. he finally

  1109. died one

  1110. last time.

  1111. At sea,

  1112. away from

  1113. his family,

  1114. all alone,

  1115. on a ship

  1116. full of

  1117. godless sailors

  1118. and away

  1119. from his

  1120. Burmese

  1121. church.

  1122. That evening,

  1123. the ship

  1124. pulled up,

  1125. the crew

  1126. assembled

  1127. quietly,

  1128. there were

  1129. no prayers,

  1130. no Bible

  1131. readings,

  1132. the captain

  1133. gave the

  1134. order,

  1135. the door

  1136. was opened,

  1137. his coffin

  1138. was slid

  1139. into the

  1140. sea,

  1141. latitude

  1142. 13 degrees

  1143. north,

  1144. longitude

  1145. 90 degrees

  1146. south,

  1147. a few

  1148. hundred

  1149. miles away

  1150. from Burma

  1151. and the

  1152. ship sailed

  1153. on.

  1154. An end

  1155. of a life.

  1156. And I

  1157. read that

  1158. and I

  1159. said,

  1160. it can't

  1161. be.

  1162. But God's

  1163. purpose was

  1164. done.

  1165. The Bible

  1166. was translated,

  1167. the dictionary

  1168. was done,

  1169. hundreds of

  1170. converts

  1171. were now

  1172. leading the

  1173. church in

  1174. Burma

  1175. and estimates

  1176. today are

  1177. that Myanmar's

  1178. Baptist

  1179. Convention

  1180. to have

  1181. 4,530

  1182. congregations

  1183. with 1.14

  1184. million members

  1185. and 1.72

  1186. million affiliates.

  1187. The fruit

  1188. of one

  1189. dead

  1190. seed.

  1191. What a

  1192. life.

  1193. Unless a

  1194. seed of

  1195. grain falls

  1196. to the ground

  1197. and dies,

  1198. it remains

  1199. only a

  1200. single seed.

  1201. But if it

  1202. dies, it

  1203. produces many

  1204. seeds.

  1205. And so,

  1206. my brothers and

  1207. sisters, the

  1208. question is not

  1209. whether you

  1210. will die,

  1211. but whether

  1212. you will die

  1213. in a way

  1214. that bears

  1215. much fruit.

  1216. Life is

  1217. fleeting.

  1218. Life is

  1219. fleeting.

  1220. And God

  1221. calls us to

  1222. give up the

  1223. comforts of

  1224. this world.

  1225. In a very

  1226. short time,

  1227. we will all

  1228. give an

  1229. account before

  1230. Jesus Christ

  1231. to how

  1232. well we

  1233. have obeyed

  1234. the command

  1235. to make

  1236. disciples of

  1237. all nations,

  1238. amongst other

  1239. things.

  1240. The very

  1241. last verse

  1242. of Isaiah

  1243. is meant to

  1244. serve as a

  1245. sober warning

  1246. to the people

  1247. of God,

  1248. in fact.

  1249. Anyone who

  1250. wants to

  1251. reject God

  1252. and his

  1253. purposes,

  1254. and they

  1255. will go

  1256. out and

  1257. look upon

  1258. the dead

  1259. bodies of

  1260. those who

  1261. rebelled

  1262. against me,

  1263. their worm

  1264. will not

  1265. die,

  1266. nor will

  1267. their fire

  1268. be quenched,

  1269. and they

  1270. will be

  1271. loathsome

  1272. to all

  1273. mankind.

  1274. And so

  1275. we sit

  1276. here in

  1277. 2011,

  1278. and many

  1279. of the

  1280. peoples of

  1281. this world

  1282. are without

  1283. any indigenous

  1284. Christian

  1285. movement.

  1286. Christ is

  1287. not enthroned

  1288. there.

  1289. His grace

  1290. is not

  1291. known there.

  1292. And people

  1293. are perishing

  1294. with no

  1295. access to

  1296. the gospel.

  1297. people.

  1298. And most

  1299. of those

  1300. hopeless

  1301. people do

  1302. not want

  1303. you to

  1304. come.

  1305. At least

  1306. they don't

  1307. think they

  1308. do.

  1309. They are

  1310. hostile to

  1311. Christian

  1312. missions.

  1313. And the

  1314. word of

  1315. our Lord

  1316. still stands.

  1317. I am

  1318. sending you

  1319. out like

  1320. sheep amongst

  1321. wolves.

  1322. believers.

  1323. And so I am

  1324. asking you

  1325. today not

  1326. to love

  1327. what this

  1328. world loves

  1329. and to

  1330. suffer by

  1331. either going

  1332. to those

  1333. people, and I

  1334. pray that there

  1335. will be many

  1336. of us who

  1337. will, go,

  1338. or by

  1339. suffering

  1340. in staying

  1341. and giving

  1342. up your

  1343. securities

  1344. for the

  1345. sake of

  1346. God's

  1347. grand design

  1348. for his

  1349. people, that

  1350. people from

  1351. every tribe,

  1352. language and

  1353. nation come

  1354. at his feet

  1355. and bow

  1356. before this

  1357. great king.

  1358. We've set a

  1359. mission target

  1360. of $125,000

  1361. this year.

  1362. Is it

  1363. big?

  1364. Well, it's

  1365. bigger than

  1366. last year.

  1367. And the

  1368. only reason we

  1369. won't reach

  1370. it is not

  1371. because of

  1372. lack of

  1373. money.

  1374. It's because

  1375. our hearts

  1376. are not

  1377. aligned with

  1378. God's

  1379. heart.

  1380. That's the

  1381. only reason

  1382. we won't

  1383. reach it.

  1384. And so I've

  1385. asked you to

  1386. be prayerful.

  1387. You've heard

  1388. the word of

  1389. God.

  1390. And now I

  1391. encourage you

  1392. to tremble

  1393. before the

  1394. word of God

  1395. and to fill

  1396. out your

  1397. pledge card.

  1398. Nick is

  1399. going to

  1400. come up

  1401. and he's

  1402. going to

  1403. play some

  1404. music while

  1405. we do

  1406. this.

1495. For everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

1496. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom.

1497. You are exalted as head over all.

1498. Wealth and honor come from you.

1499. You are the ruler of all things.

1500. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

1501. Now, O Lord, give thanks.

1502. We give thanks to you and praise your glorious name.

  1503. But who am I?

1504. And who are these people that we should be able to give like this?

1505. Father, everything comes from you and we have only given you what comes from your hand.

1506. We are aliens and strangers in your sight.

1507. Our life is fleeting as we're all of our forefathers.

1508. Our days on earth are like a shadow without hope.

1509. O Lord, our God, for all this abundance that we have provided,

1510. that your name might go to the ends of the earth.

1511. It has only come from your hand and it belongs to you.

1512. I know, Father, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity.

1513. And all these things that we have willingly given with honest intent.

1514. And now, Lord, may it be a great joy amongst your people.

1515. There might be an ongoing willingness amongst your people to continue to pursue your purpose.

1516. Keep the desire in our hearts, Father, for the unreached peoples of this world,

1517. for those who are lost.

1518. Help us to continue to have your purpose and that we might be loyal to your purpose consistently.

1519. They might be in front of us all of our days.

1520. Give us a wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, your requirements and your decrees

1521. and that we would do everything within our power, Father, to finish the Great Commission.

1522. And we ask it for your glory.

  1523. Amen.
