  1. Hebrews is a really difficult book and it has a lot, it's one of those books of the Bible that you come to and you start to read it

  2. and it actually has a lot of assumed knowledge which lies behind it.

  3. So it's written to an audience which has been raised under the law of Moses and its regulations, culturally raised as Jews.

  4. So the law defined their life, they circumcised their boys, they lived under the Ten Commandments,

  5. they knew that God called them to love their neighbours as themselves,

  6. they didn't eat things like prawn cutlets and pork buns.

  7. Who had pork buns after church last Sunday night?

  8. Yeah, one or two.

  9. So they couldn't have lived in Chatswood.

  10. They didn't work on Saturdays, they didn't wear nylon or lycra because that was their culture,

  11. that was how God taught them to live their lives as his holy, as his different, as his set apart people.

  12. And that's not where most of us come from.

  13. I know that in our group some people have found Hebrews tedious and a struggle,

  14. certainly not the Wednesday nighters because you've been doing Tulip with John Piper,

  15. but in the group, some of the groups have been finding it hard,

  16. others of the groups have been rejoicing it and I've been rejoicing it for myself as well.

  17. But Hebrews is of high value because it forces us to see how Christ fulfils all that the Old Testament doesn't.

  18. So Hebrews paints a picture, a startling picture of how Christ fulfils the Old Testament and doesn't abolish it.

  19. So if you remember the words of Jesus,

  20. do not think that I came to abolish the law and the prophets, I have come to fulfil them,

  21. he said in the Sermon on the Mount.

  22. So this passage which I'm preaching tonight begins with these words.

  23. So if you've got your Bibles, have them open, Hebrews chapter 10 and I'm reading from verse 19.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  24. So he opens with these words and he's actually connecting with the words which go immediately before,

  25. but it's even bigger than that because he's connecting with everything that has happened in this book before

  26. and he's come to a change point.

  27. There's a point here that really matters in the things that he wants to say

  28. and he wants to build his argument on what has already happened in Jesus.

  29. So the Old Testament system of worship was a model

  30. or you might even say it was an early prototype of a far greater reality.

  31. The law, the priests, the high priests, the temple of Solomon with its most holy place

  32. were a kind of virtual reality.

  33. They gave the people a glimpse, see it's ancient technology,

  34. but it gave the people a glimpse of something that was real

  35. but it didn't give them the reality itself.

  36. Now it's a big problem if you confuse what is real with what it isn't

  37. and the Jews did that.

  38. They got wrapped up in the bricks and mortar of the temple

  39. and this impressive building and they failed to see beyond it

  40. to the reality that it was pointing to.

  41. Show my age.

  42. My parents got their first TV when I was born.

  43. If they had one before I was born, they might never have been born, might they?

  44. But I grew up watching the Flintstones and the Jetsons

  45. and the ABC News in black and white.

  46. The TV man came regularly to replace the burnt out valves.

  47. You don't even know what a valve is in a television, do you?

  48. Do you know what a valve was?

  49. It's the ancient transistor.

  50. And in your television set you might have 20 valves.

  51. Well now in your computer you've got a billion transistors

  52. built into that tiny little chip.

  53. So these valves were like globes up in the ceiling.

  54. You'd pull one out and throw it away every so often.

  55. You'd get the repairman in to fix your TV.

  56. So I was in year 12 in 1975 when colour television came in.

  57. I think we were able to watch the sacking of the Whitlam government

  58. in glorious colour.

  59. We haven't got 3D TV yet.

  60. I'm still working on it.

  61. Not really.

  62. But if we had one the other night

  63. I'm sure it would have made me feel like I was there

  64. watching Tomek play at Wimbledon.

  65. But I wasn't.

  66. Television's a virtual world.

  67. Isn't the real thing.

  68. And I can tell you I would rather have tickets

  69. sitting courtside with the princess

  70. than watching in the lounge room at home.

  71. So when the preacher says, verse 19,

  72. therefore brothers and sisters,

  73. since we have confidence to enter the most holy place

  74. by the blood of Jesus,

  75. by a new and living way open for us through the curtain,

  76. that is, his body,

  77. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  78. he's summarising.

  79. And he's summarising everything that's gone before

  80. and he's saying that the model is now obsolete

  81. because we have the reality.

  82. Because of Jesus,

  83. we are now sitting courtside at Wimbledon.

  84. Brian and Deb in their messages last week

  85. said some great things about the passage that went before.

  86. They said that the Old Testament system of worship

  87. could take people so far but no further.

  88. And the temple was a great example.

  89. The nations could come into the outer courts.

  90. The Jews could come a bit closer to the centre.

  91. The priests could come a bit closer again

  92. as they offered their bloodied sacrifices

  93. and the place looked like an abattoir

  94. with all the blood that was being shed.

  95. But the most holy place

  96. at the very centre of the temple,

  97. behind the curtain,

  98. was off limits to everyone

  99. with the exception of the high priest

  100. and he could go there only once a year

  101. if he made special preparation.

  102. And he died if he got it wrong.

  103. And so the model

  104. taught the people

  105. that it was a big deal

  106. to come into the presence of God.

  107. It needed big perfection,

  108. it needed big sacrifice.

  109. And no one was just safe

  110. to stroll into God's presence.

  111. Like, how are you going, mate?

  112. God's my mate, God's my friend.

  113. You just couldn't do that.

  114. And even if we tried,

  115. we would be unable

  116. because we can't get ourselves

  117. into heaven.

  118. And so the model creates a picture

  119. that shows us the real world dilemma.

  120. We are cut off from a holy God

  121. who dwells in heaven

  122. and we are unable to find our way

  123. into his presence.

  124. And it's like Christ has stormed

  125. onto the centre court at Wimbledon

  126. and taken us with him.

  127. Christ, this is chapter 9, verse 24,

  128. Christ did not enter

  129. a man-made sanctuary

  130. that was only a copy

  131. of the true one.

  132. He entered heaven itself

  133. now to appear for us

  134. in God's presence.

  135. And so in chapter 10, verse 19,

  136. and I've twisted the word slightly,

  137. but I hope you see

  138. that it's a true translation.

  139. Therefore we have,

  140. or it's true to the meaning,

  141. therefore we have confidence

  142. to enter heaven itself

  143. by the blood of Jesus,

  144. a new and living way

  145. which has been opened

  146. through his body.

  147. So the old system's kaput.

  148. Why would you sit in the,

  149. can you imagine sitting

  150. in the stands at Wimbledon

  151. and you've got your TV

  152. so that you can watch the match

  153. when you're really at the match?

  154. Wouldn't that be stupid?

  155. Why would you go back

  156. to animal sacrifices

  157. in a fancy temple complex

  158. when Christ has been sacrificed

  159. once for all,

  160. never to die again

  161. and guaranteed a way

  162. into the presence of God forever?

  163. Never.

  164. Ridiculous.

  165. So Christ has changed the game

  166. and the rubber hits the road for us

  167. and you see that in verses 22 to 25.

  168. He goes from talking about

  169. what Christ has done

  170. to talking about

  171. what we're asked to do.

  172. So let us draw near to God

  173. with a sincere heart

  174. in full assurance of faith,

  175. having our hearts sprinkled

  176. to cleanse us

  177. from a guilty conscience

  178. and having our bodies

  179. washed with pure water.

  180. And let us hold unswervingly

  181. to the hope that we profess

  182. for he who promised is faithful.

  183. And let us consider

  184. how we may spur one another

  185. on towards love and good deeds.

  186. Let us not give up meeting together

  187. as some are in the habit of doing,

  188. but let us encourage one another

  189. and all the more

  190. as you see the day approaching.

  191. So he turns the spotlight onto us

  192. and not just you individually

  193. sitting in a pew tonight,

  194. maybe with friends around you.

  195. But he's speaking to us

  196. as a group of people,

  197. as the body of Christ,

  198. those who have come to believe

  199. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  200. and who cling to him.

  201. And five times he says to us

  202. as a body,

  203. let us.

  204. verse 22,

  205. let us draw near to God.

  206. Come to God.

  207. I don't know what's going on

  208. in your heart tonight.

  209. I love the invitational language

  210. of the scriptures

  211. where God draws us to himself.

  212. One of the temptations we face

  213. when gripped by sin

  214. is to get into it.

  215. You know,

  216. you ever feel like

  217. you're fighting a war

  218. which will never be won

  219. over and over and over again

  220. and we can become

  221. almost depressed

  222. and down in the mouth

  223. and we can throw our hands

  224. in the air

  225. and we can say,

  226. what's the use?

  227. And we pull away from God

  228. and we think things like,

  229. oh, he wouldn't want to know me,

  230. I'm too bad for him.

  231. And we do what Adam did

  232. at the very beginning

  233. of the Bible

  234. when he sinned.

  235. He hid from God.

  236. God came looking for him

  237. and he was afraid.

  238. And he and Eve,

  239. when they sinned,

  240. became aware of their,

  241. they were naked before God

  242. before they sinned

  243. and no shame.

  244. And after sinning,

  245. one of the awarenesses they had

  246. was of their own nakedness

  247. and they tried to deal with it

  248. by putting a few fig leaves together.

  249. Terribly effective.

  250. But deep down,

  251. we know that we are unworthy

  252. and in our pride

  253. and in our fear,

  254. we run from God.

  255. And the Bible says

  256. things have changed.

  257. Christ has made us worthy.

  258. We can confidently stand

  259. in God's presence

  260. without shame,

  261. clean,

  262. washed,

  263. pure.

  264. And it does not matter

  265. where we have been

  266. in our lives

  267. before we have come to him.

  268. He is able to deal with it.

  269. And all our sinful failure,

  270. hate,

  271. murder,

  272. pride,

  273. sexual sin,

  274. malicious talking,

  275. all swept away

  276. by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  277. Christ.

  278. And so there is this

  279. extraordinary invitation,

  280. we can run to Christ.

  281. And we don't have to

  282. fake it with him,

  283. we don't,

  284. we can speak honestly

  285. to him without pretense,

  286. we don't have to be somebody

  287. to be in his presence.

  288. A sincere heart,

  289. something which just

  290. tells the truth,

  291. God,

  292. you know what I am like.

  293. You know me,

  294. you know my thoughts,

  295. you know what I have done,

  296. you know what I struggle with,

  297. you know my insecurities,

  298. you know my fears.

  299. Please forgive me,

  300. please help me.

  301. And as we do that,

  302. the gospel reminds us

  303. that our consciences

  304. are made clean

  305. again

  306. as we put our hope

  307. in Christ.

  308. He lifts that

  309. terrible burden

  310. of guilt

  311. and accusation

  312. from us,

  313. God sets us

  314. truly free.

  315. So Hebrews says,

  316. draw near,

  317. don't flee.

  318. Stand fully secure

  319. in what Christ

  320. has done.

  321. And then in verse 23,

  322. second let us,

  323. let us hold unswervingly

  324. to the hope

  325. that we profess.

  326. Now this is like,

  327. let's hang on

  328. for the ride.

  329. And I got this picture

  330. in my mind

  331. of one of those

  332. dirty big roller coasters.

  333. They used to have

  334. a great big wooden one

  335. at Luna Park

  336. in Sydney.

  337. And we would ride it

  338. round and round

  339. and round and round

  340. again.

  341. But you know,

  342. the first click,

  343. click,

  344. click,

  345. click,

  346. click,

  347. click,

  348. click,

  349. click,

  350. click,

  351. click,

  352. click,

  353. click,

  354. she came to the top

  355. of the big hill

  356. and it began to roll

  357. over the top

  358. and then the downward ride.

  359. The really bold ones

  360. throw their hands

  361. in the air.

  362. The rest of us,

  363. mere mortals like me,

  364. we just hang on

  365. to the bar

  366. for grim life,

  367. grim death.

  368. I saw one in the paper

  369. the other day

  370. that would be interesting

  371. to try out.

  372. It's a new one in Japan

  373. and it literally

  374. goes up the big hill.

  375. I saw a picture of it

  376. and not only goes down,

  377. it goes under

  378. and down at an angle.

  379. I need to draw it

  380. the right way.

  381. It does that.

  382. It goes backward,

  383. upside down

  384. on the first hill.

  385. Sounds really exciting.

  386. But white knuckle ride.

  387. And so he's saying

  388. the admonition

  389. is to cling to the hope

  390. that we have in Christ.

  391. Let us hold unswervingly

  392. to the hope

  393. that we profess.

  394. Don't let go.

  395. And he's writing

  396. to believers

  397. who are doing it tough.

  398. He knows their circumstances.

  399. Verse 32,

  400. remember those earlier days

  401. after you received

  402. the light

  403. when you stood your ground

  404. in a great contest

  405. in the face of suffering?

  406. Sometimes you were publicly

  407. exposed to insult

  408. and persecution

  409. and other times

  410. you stood side by side

  411. with those

  412. who were so treated.

  413. So these believers,

  414. they'd made a great beginning,

  415. a courageous beginning

  416. and he knows

  417. that they've had

  418. a really difficult journey.

  419. So verse 33,

  420. public exposure

  421. to insult

  422. and persecution.

  423. Verse 34,

  424. joyfully accepted

  425. the confiscation

  426. of their property.

  427. Can you imagine that?

  428. Can you imagine

  429. your mum or dad

  430. losing your house

  431. in Chatswood

  432. or roundabout

  433. because of their faith

  434. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  435. having taken it from them

  436. being left

  437. with all the insecurity

  438. that flows from that?

  439. I read the other day

  440. about Christians

  441. in some parts of Syria

  442. right at the moment

  443. doing it really tough.

  444. They're trying to live

  445. as godly citizens

  446. in the towns

  447. that they're living in.

  448. They're trying to honour

  449. their government

  450. even though we look

  451. at their government

  452. and say what an appalling government

  453. and the people in their town

  454. who are dissatisfied

  455. with their government.

  456. Some of the people there

  457. are saying join us,

  458. rise up

  459. or get out.

  460. Join us

  461. or get out.

  462. There's no place

  463. for you here.

  464. Some of us

  465. who have come

  466. to hope in Christ

  467. and this might be you

  468. as a teenager

  469. or a young adult,

  470. you may have come

  471. out of families

  472. where he has not

  473. been known before

  474. and you may have

  475. stepped outside

  476. your family's rules

  477. and values

  478. in following Christ.

  479. we've been ridiculed

  480. and perhaps pitied

  481. or despised

  482. for what we believe.

  483. Parents have a great way

  484. of dropping a little word

  485. and grinding the knife

  486. a little bit,

  487. twisting it a little bit

  488. to make us feel uncomfortable.

  489. I can remember

  490. going out to prayer meeting

  491. on a Tuesday night

  492. after I became a Christian.

  493. I was 18 or 19

  494. and my dad had a,

  495. it was partly because

  496. of my own weakness,

  497. my dad had a way

  498. of humiliating me

  499. because every week

  500. he'd say where are you going?

  501. He knew where I was going

  502. but he made me say it

  503. at the prayer meeting.

  504. Friends who like to remind us

  505. when we fail,

  506. there is others of us

  507. who perhaps miss out

  508. on promotion

  509. or perhaps opportunity

  510. at work

  511. because people know

  512. what we stand for

  513. and who we stand for

  514. and perhaps we won't

  515. be corrupted

  516. or behave in some

  517. of the ways

  518. that they might applaud.

  519. And I think there are

  520. other days,

  521. dark days which come

  522. upon us for all sorts

  523. of reasons

  524. when we don't feel

  525. like Christ is very near.

  526. Holding on,

  527. clinging to the hope

  528. that we profess

  529. is the same

  530. as holding on

  531. to the gospel

  532. that we have been taught.

  533. And it's like

  534. don't lose heart,

  535. don't shrink back,

  536. cling tenaciously

  537. to this hope

  538. that we profess,

  539. don't let go

  540. of Christ

  541. no matter

  542. how tough

  543. it is.

  544. So the first

  545. two let us's

  546. are about

  547. clinging

  548. to Christ.

  549. The last three

  550. are about

  551. clinging

  552. to each other.

  553. And they're about

  554. the sort of relationships

  555. that Christian believers

  556. have with one another.

  557. So verse

  558. 30,

  559. 24,

  560. let us consider

  561. how we may

  562. spur one another

  563. on toward love

  564. and good deeds.

  565. Verse 25,

  566. let us not give up

  567. meeting together.

  568. Verse 25,

  569. let us encourage

  570. one another.

  571. Now I've got to tell you

  572. sometimes we Christians

  573. read this verse

  574. and we think

  575. oh that's the real,

  576. that's why we've

  577. got to come to church.

  578. I didn't say to you

  579. you've got to come

  580. to church

  581. but that's the thing

  582. that we sometimes

  583. use to say

  584. you've got to come

  585. to church.

  586. And we present it

  587. like it's some sort

  588. of law or rule

  589. or principle

  590. that we've got to obey.

  591. Go to church,

  592. keep the rule,

  593. make God happy.

  594. That sounds like fun

  595. doesn't it?

  596. Can you see

  597. how barren

  598. and sterile

  599. that is

  600. compared to the richness

  601. of what these verses

  602. convey?

  603. This is about

  604. the whole body,

  605. this is all of us

  606. working with energy

  607. together

  608. in response

  609. to who Christ is

  610. and to what Christ

  611. has done.

  612. And so the focus

  613. of our interactions

  614. become things like

  615. how can I encourage you?

  616. I don't come to church

  617. thinking oh what are they

  618. going to do for me tonight?

  619. How can I encourage you?

  620. What might I do here

  621. tonight which serves?

  622. What might I say here

  623. tonight that builds

  624. somebody up?

  625. What person might I know

  626. around the building

  627. who looks a bit lonely

  628. or on their own

  629. or nobody's talking

  630. to them?

  631. Maybe I'm the one

  632. who can step out

  633. of my comfort zone

  634. and speak to them.

  635. See what word

  636. can I speak

  637. that builds you up

  638. in Christ

  639. or grows you

  640. in Christ?

  641. And sometimes

  642. most of the time

  643. it will be

  644. an affirming word

  645. and occasionally

  646. it will be

  647. a corrective word.

  648. A few weeks ago

  649. one of my sisters

  650. said to me

  651. after one of the services

  652. that I was promoting

  653. our small groups

  654. in a less than

  655. embracing way.

  656. So I was making it

  657. sound like some of them

  658. are a bit too exclusive

  659. so there's no room

  660. there for you.

  661. And she said

  662. we've got to be

  663. more generous

  664. than that.

  665. And I went

  666. oh.

  667. But it was said

  668. to me really gently

  669. it was easy to hear

  670. and she was right.

  671. And if my Christian

  672. sister had not

  673. said that to me

  674. I would not have

  675. seen it

  676. but I can stand

  677. here tonight

  678. and say to you

  679. she was right

  680. that was a really

  681. good thing

  682. to be shown.

  683. Remember what I said

  684. the context?

  685. a little bit

  686. of that

  687. and a lot

  688. of the other.

  689. I see things here

  690. I think on Sunday

  691. night

  692. I see it in the

  693. morning as well

  694. you know our

  695. service finishes

  696. we speak to one

  697. another

  698. we interact

  699. which is just

  700. fantastic

  701. and see

  702. conversations go

  703. on and sometimes

  704. your heads go

  705. down

  706. as you actually

  707. stop and pray

  708. for one another.

  709. I think that

  710. type of interaction

  711. is enormously

  712. encouraging

  713. and great

  714. ministry

  715. while we're

  716. together.

  717. This will be

  718. harder for some

  719. of you because

  720. depending on your

  721. circumstances you

  722. may have your

  723. own home or

  724. the own place

  725. where you live

  726. others of you

  727. will be in your

  728. parents places

  729. and so that

  730. will have some

  731. bearing on the

  732. sort of hospitality

  733. that you can

  734. exercise but

  735. hospitality is a

  736. great way of

  737. Christians getting

  738. together to

  739. encourage one

  740. another going to

  741. one another's

  742. homes.

  743. We do it in

  744. some measure in

  745. our small groups

  746. some of our

  747. small groups

  748. meet in

  749. people's homes

  750. but it's not

  751. just a formal

  752. meeting like a

  753. small group

  754. it's an informal

  755. meeting where we

  756. have friends over

  757. I think I've

  758. heard of fellow

  759. sleep which some

  760. of the girls

  761. were doing and

  762. the joy of

  763. that coming

  764. together for

  765. Christian

  766. encouragement

  767. moving around

  768. one another's

  769. home that's

  770. just a fantastic

  771. thing to be

  772. able to do

  773. but it's looking

  774. around as well

  775. and seeing who

  776. can we pick up

  777. into these networks

  778. of relationships

  779. that we have

  780. who can we

  781. invite amongst

  782. us

  783. who might not

  784. be one of

  785. us but perhaps

  786. we would like

  787. them invite them

  788. to join us or

  789. that we might

  790. go to them.

  791. New sheet

  792. tonight's got the

  793. great example of

  794. the parish picnic

  795. and barbecue coming

  796. up in a couple of

  797. weeks time which is

  798. an opportunity for

  799. us as a congregation

  800. to mix with people

  801. from the other six

  802. congregations at

  803. St Paul's and

  804. perhaps have a

  805. better awareness of

  806. the bigger picture of

  807. who we are and the

  808. different cultures that

  809. are represented and

  810. the different backgrounds

  811. that people have.

  812. in my last church

  813. I saw some lovely

  814. ministry happen

  815. amongst our older

  816. people so

  817. sometimes the

  818. oldies would

  819. grizzle about

  820. the younger ones

  821. you know if you

  822. write on the walls

  823. at church

  824. at kids church

  825. with chalk

  826. then some of the

  827. oldies look at

  828. stuff like that

  829. and go

  830. not the way to

  831. treat the building

  832. but

  833. that's because

  834. of the ways

  835. that they've been

  836. taught in the past

  837. and we'll talk

  838. more about that

  839. in a minute

  840. so some of

  841. these older

  842. ladies

  843. rather than

  844. grizzle

  845. I'll tell you

  846. something

  847. our older people

  848. sometimes say

  849. what are the

  850. young people

  851. doing

  852. we'd like to

  853. see more of

  854. them we'd like

  855. to know what

  856. they're doing

  857. so they are

  858. interested but I

  859. think they almost

  860. expect you to

  861. come to them

  862. which might not

  863. be the right way

  864. to do it

  865. and I say

  866. things to them

  867. I think this

  868. church is very

  869. much like my

  870. last church

  871. that the young

  872. people are

  873. heavily involved

  874. in ministry

  875. it's a great

  876. thing

  877. so the young

  878. people are

  879. leading the

  880. kids church

  881. ministry and

  882. they're leading

  883. the youth

  884. ministry and

  885. they're leading

  886. D teams and

  887. they're actually

  888. quite heavily

  889. involved in the

  890. sort of commitments

  891. that they make

  892. here and the

  893. older people look

  894. at me sometimes

  895. and go oh I

  896. didn't realise

  897. that I forgot

  898. that and same

  899. back where we

  900. came from and

  901. after a while

  902. one of the

  903. groups of women

  904. got themselves

  905. together and

  906. decided well we

  907. want to encourage

  908. our young leaders

  909. so they decided

  910. they put on a

  911. celebration dinner

  912. for them they

  913. put on a dinner

  914. where they

  915. spoiled them and

  916. they invited all

  917. the youth leaders

  918. along gave them

  919. a great meal just

  920. to show appreciation

  921. to them for the

  922. ministry which they

  923. were doing

  924. wonderful thing

  925. I saw those

  926. ladies go and

  927. later one of the

  928. ladies in that group

  929. became very

  930. dissatisfied that

  931. they really

  932. didn't do a lot

  933. for other people

  934. and so they

  935. made a pact

  936. amongst themselves

  937. and these older

  938. ladies all got

  939. together and one

  940. at a time they

  941. worked around some

  942. of the groups at

  943. church and they

  944. invited them out

  945. to the same sort

  946. of thing they put

  947. on a dinner for

  948. them they'd have

  949. them along to

  950. encourage them in

  951. Christ and guess

  952. what happened when

  953. they did that

  954. there were all

  955. sorts of other

  956. fingers and webs

  957. that got established

  958. in relationship and

  959. far more appreciation

  960. that was happening

  961. for one another and

  962. what was going on

  963. and who people

  964. were and it

  965. was just great

  966. so hospitality

  967. a great means of

  968. generously spurring

  969. one another on in

  970. love and good deeds

  971. I'll tell you another

  972. story and I'm looking

  973. here tonight I don't

  974. think Anne Newman

  975. would mind me

  976. singling her out

  977. yes she did she

  978. winced

  979. but Anne is one of

  980. a number who are in

  981. this church family

  982. because of the way

  983. that they were

  984. cared for in

  985. Christ when they

  986. went through a

  987. very difficult time

  988. in life and they're

  989. amongst us now

  990. they've grown in

  991. Christ but they've

  992. been loved in

  993. Christ and there's a

  994. track record of 20

  995. or 30 years which

  996. goes on in some of

  997. those relationships

  998. so for all of us

  999. some of the

  1000. relationships we have

  1001. now tonight amongst

  1002. us as friends here

  1003. I would hope and

  1004. pray have an enduring

  1005. quality to them which

1006. will be seen over a

  1007. very long period of

  1008. time I'm going to

1009. say this I said it to

  1010. the morning people but

1011. I'm going to say it to

1012. you because I think it

1013. bears here as well but

  1014. I've only been here 18

1015. months and I've seen the

  1016. downside as well I

  1017. have seen some people

  1018. leave church because

  1019. they haven't been

  1020. included they've never

  1021. been asked into

  1022. somebody's home or

  1023. into their group of

  1024. friends they'll come to

  1025. church and really

  1026. stand alone nobody

  1027. talks to them I

  1028. watched a couple this

  1029. morning who've been

1030. here for quite a while

1031. more than 12 months and

1032. out there on the deck

1033. they were alone for a

  1034. long time before anybody

  1035. spoke to them

  1036. other people leave

  1037. because they don't like

1038. the way we work so

1039. they don't like the way

1040. we run a service so

  1041. they don't like having

  1042. to speak to other

  1043. people about their

  1044. faith there's some old

  1045. people who hate talking

  1046. to people about faith

1047. and so we we do

1048. things I think you do

  1049. it at Sunday night

  1050. church I've seen you

1051. Sam will throw out a

  1052. question from the front

  1053. and what he'll say he'll

1054. send you to go and

  1055. interact over it and

1056. part of that is is

  1057. actually training you

1058. training us to be able

1059. to talk to one another

1060. about things of faith and

  1061. to feel comfortable

  1062. talking about things that

  1063. are perhaps more

  1064. substantial than how's

1065. the weather do I like

  1066. the colour of church

1067. or stuff that we we

  1068. don't really draw that

  1069. close to one another

1070. I love speaking to our

  1071. Chinese friends because

1072. some of them are very

  1073. quick to say I'm not a

  1074. Christian but guess what

  1075. they're happy to talk

  1076. about it

  1077. we've been promoting

  1078. life journals at church

1079. Sam hold it up it's got

1080. it there with him it's

  1081. fantastic and I think I

1082. want to say to you that

1083. these are not just about

1084. you and your walk with

1085. the Lord which it is

1086. they are about us as a

  1087. body growing in our

  1088. relationship with Christ

1089. you will have much more

1090. that you can share if you

1091. give time and effort to

  1092. reading God's word and

1093. relating to him you will

1094. grow in godly wisdom you

1095. will grow in a true

  1096. understanding of his word

1097. as the Holy Spirit teaches

  1098. and changes you I think a

1099. lot of my ministry comes

1100. from my walk with Christ

1101. I began the service of

1102. this morning at 830 by

  1103. talking about what Christ

1104. had said to me in my

1105. quiet time this morning as

1106. he read his word it's

1107. fresh for me it's real

  1108. it's alive it's not just

  1109. something that I learned

1110. somewhere in the past to

1111. keep talking about and so

1112. I want to say to you that

1113. if you are not reading your

  1114. Bible you won't have

  1115. anything fresh to share

  1116. from your current walk

1117. with Christ and if you're

1118. not praying how can you

  1119. look your brother or

1120. sister in the eye and say

1121. I'm praying for you now

1122. people often ask me to pray

1123. for them and if you ask me

1124. I am most likely to say can

1125. I pray for you right now and

1126. one of the reasons I want to

  1127. do that is because I don't

1128. want to be the hypocrite who

1129. says yes I'll do it and

1130. then walk away and forget

1131. great way for us to

  1132. interact with one another

  1133. so there's five let us's and

1134. they boil down to two let us

1135. cling to Christ and let us

1136. cling to one another that is

1137. the whole of church life I

1138. want to say something from

  1139. verse 26 before I begin to

1140. wrap up and that and it

1141. says this and this leads

1142. into the rest of the

  1143. passage even though I won't

1144. go there but he says if we

  1145. deliberately keep on sinning

1146. after we have received the

1147. knowledge of the truth no

1148. sacrifice for sin is left and

  1149. it's a bit of a clangor

1150. because it comes after all

1151. this good stuff and it seems

1152. to come from left field and I

1153. think if any of us are

1154. sitting here tonight with a

1155. tender conscience which is a

1156. great thing to have you may

1157. feel unsettled because we are

1158. very aware of sin in our life

1159. and at first reading this sort

1160. of verse seems to undermine our

1161. assurance and creates a lack of

1162. confidence in Christ and you

1163. ask yourself but how do you

1164. treat this verse when I've

1165. already spent considerable time in

1166. this message urging you to draw

1167. near to God sin and all the

1168. passage is saying come near to

1169. God and this is saying oh

1170. there's no sacrifice left for

1171. sin if we deliberately keep on

1172. sinning but when I sin I do

1173. deliberately sin how do I

  1174. reconcile these sorts of

1175. things and I think the answer is

1176. in the context he's writing to

1177. Jewish believers who've come to

1178. believe in Christ at great

1179. personal cost he's urging them to

1180. persevere they've already hung in

  1181. there through humiliation and

1182. ridicule they have put up with

  1183. gross injustices like the

  1184. confiscation of their property

1185. but in the pressure it seems that

  1186. some aren't getting together

1187. anymore I used to go to church

1188. oh yeah that was good a while back

1189. and it might be that they're even

1190. shrinking back and going back to

1191. some of the Old Testament ways of

1192. worship and they may well say I love

1193. God but this Jesus stuff is just a

1194. bit too hard and the writer is

1195. saying there is no other way there

1196. is no sacrifice for sin except

1197. Christ and if you walk away from

1198. Christ there is no other way to

1199. heaven you can't go back to

1200. worshiping a Jew as a Jew like you

1201. were before or any other way and

1202. find your way into God's heaven and

1203. that is why he urges them to cling to

1204. Christ and to cling to one another

1205. I began this message speaking about

1206. virtual reality and reality some of

1207. you spend too much of your lives

1208. living in virtual reality what's

1209. that computer games and iPods and

1210. iPads I love them but we can be

  1211. there for too long

1212. have a think about this building we

1213. meet in a building which we call

  1214. church very unfortunate name

1215. some of our older members were taught

1216. from children so by ministers like me

1217. they were taught as children that this

1218. is the Lord's house so it somehow or

1219. rather becomes a special building

1220. it's got a little bit of a mix of

1221. temple thinking in there you know the

1222. place where God dwells and yet David I

1223. think said the Lord does not dwell in

1224. buildings made by man so we know good

1225. Bible teaching some of you think it's a

1226. great old church for your wedding and

1227. maybe you want it looking like this so

1228. that you got a nice long old walk down

1229. we could turn it sideways what would

1230. do with that what happened the aisle

1231. I guess you'd have to do a right angle

1232. turn as you came down wouldn't you

1233. but the building is fake as far as the

1234. things of God are concerned this is 60

1235. years old I thought it was a much older

1236. church when I came here it's sandstone

1237. exterior gives the appearance of being a

1238. very old building and do you know it's a

1239. it's a sandstone building you get below

1240. that mortar and it's double brick walls so

1241. if we get a Christchurch type earthquake

1242. we'll all be buried here

  1243. the organ pipes

  1244. they're fake

  1245. they're cardboard tubes

  1246. can you believe it?

  1247. they're cardboard tubes

1248. you could set the bottom of one of them on

1249. fire and it'd blow like a chimney all the

  1250. way to the top

1251. if you go across the road and you know

1252. the elevator up the side of the

  1253. building I've been up there it's a

1254. great ride you ought to take it it's

1255. free you go up the top great view of

1256. the mountains but you look down on

1257. church you know what you see it's built

  1258. like a cross

1259. so it's built to a particular way of

1260. thinking and it's model something

1261. we call the table up the front's cool

  1262. what is it?

1263. no we call it a table and it is a table

1264. it's flat surface that you put things on

1265. but in most Anglican churches the majority

1266. of Anglican churches around the world do

  1267. call it an altar

1268. and the rail around it that marks off that

1269. area behind the rail is it's called the

  1270. sanctuary

  1271. the holy place

1272. someone somewhere in our history and I

1273. think maybe particularly in the 1800s

1274. thought that we were in the business of

  1275. doing sacrifices

1276. so we've got our architecture

  1277. confused with our theology

1278. and we have to let the Bible rule over

  1279. our architecture

  1280. Hebrews says incredibly clearly

1281. that there is only one sacrifice that

  1282. matters

1283. the death of Christ has put an end to

  1284. all the rest

1285. he has done everything necessary to

1286. take us into the presence of God he

  1287. takes us into heaven

1288. and so it's easy for us at this service

1289. especially to mock the old stuff

  1290. because that's maybe not where we've

1291. come from with those modes of thinking

1292. but if you've been sitting in church 60

1293. years ago some of that stuff's what you

1294. would have been told and some of that

1295. stuff's the baggage that you would be

1296. carrying now and wrestling with

1297. but we have just read a passage

1298. which absolutely emphasises that it

1299. emphasises that it is what happens in

  1300. this auditorium that matters

1301. and what happens outside this auditorium

1302. that matters in our lives and the lives

  1303. of believers

1304. when the Jews stopped listening to Paul at the

1305. synagogue in Corinth he moved next door to the

1306. hall of Tyrannus and kept teaching what he was

  1307. teaching in church

  1308. just changed buildings

1309. didn't change what he was doing

1310. just rented a hall and kept going for it

  1311. got the believers together

1312. they encouraged one another in love and good deeds

1313. they kept clinging to Christ

1314. even as they clung to one another

1315. and so I think it is absurd

1316. that we would ever hang on to virtual reality

1317. and miss out on the real thing

  1318. Amen

1319. Sam can tell me what to do

1320. he can tell me to go

  1321. or stay

1322. but we talked about this after the service this morning

1323. and you felt like there were some implications

  1324. that might flow through

1325. from some of this thinking even to 5.30

1326. in a way that it doesn't for the older ones

1327. you want to take us there

1328. and at the same time

  1329. if we've got a minute

1330. I'll just throw it open to questions

1331. that might flow from what we've been talking about

1332. Do you want to do that first?

  1333. Yep, anybody getting questions?

1334. I haven't got my Bible in my hand

1335. I might need it in my hand

1336. if you ask a hard one

  1337. Sorry, question was

1338. how come we don't make the sign of the cross?

1339. which is a particularly Catholic tradition I think

1340. Yeah, there are some churches

  1341. where it's a very normal tradition

  1342. so Catholic, Orthodox

1343. some of the people do it

1344. it will come down to what they've been taught

1345. it's not something we have taught

1346. because you don't see it as something

1347. which is prescribed in the scriptures

  1348. so I won't say it's a bad thing to do

1349. but for me straight away

1350. I don't see a reason to teach you to do it

  1351. and I think it's probably wiser

1352. for us not to mock those who do

1353. That got off lightly, didn't it?

  1354. Yeah, it did

  1355. Luckily for you

  1356. there's a chance to continue

1357. churching together in this building

1358. after we've finished the formal part

1359. so maybe you've got questions

1360. that might come up afterwards

1361. that you might want to ask Chris

1362. or even chat about with one another

1363. Me and Chris were talking a little bit

  1364. about this this morning

  1365. in terms of

1366. we hear this sort of message

1367. and it's really easy for us to think

  1368. those silly old people

1369. that think that's an altar

1370. or those silly old people

1371. who are really excited about cardboard tubes

1372. or whatever it is that they had

1373. but I just wanted to leave you guys

1374. a bit of time right now

  1375. to maybe reflect that

1376. we have lots of things of our own

1377. that have become part of

  1378. what church must be

  1379. I think for me

  1380. reflecting personally

1381. and in conversations with people

  1382. it might sound silly

1383. but what time we do church

1384. is very precious for some of us

1385. Church shifts by half an hour

1386. and all of a sudden

1387. it's not the same church

1388. I used to be a part of

1389. it might be the fact

1390. that we had the offertory

  1391. in song 3

1392. instead of the last song

1393. which we don't have another song

1394. so it was the last song

  1395. but things like that

1396. that we just grab hold of

  1397. because that's what we've been doing

  1398. our whole life

  1399. we've been in church

  1400. and what this passage

1401. has challenged us to reflect on

  1402. is that there's

1403. there's two commands in there

  1404. two let us commands

  1405. that really matter

1406. and maybe we need to reflect

  1407. on what other things

  1408. we're clinging onto

  1409. on top of Christ

  1410. and one another

1411. so I want to give you

  1412. some time right now

  1413. to ignore that

1414. and just reflect for yourself

1415. what might those things be

1416. that you've kind of elevated

  1417. onto that level

  1418. alongside Christ

  1419. and one another

  1420. when it comes to

  1421. what church is

  1422. you've done

1423. ready to click on miss

  1424. of each other

  1425. from near to the

  1426. Like this

  1427. it can be

  1428. through and once

  1429. I can biri
