  1. Good morning friends, it's great to be here at church with you this morning.

  2. We as a church have a vision to grow, St Paul's has a vision to grow.

  3. It's a vision which was put before you a bit over two years ago, or actually about two years ago.

  4. It's not the only time you've had one of these visions, you've had them in the past.

  5. The vision fundamentally is not for people to come from other churches to this church,

  6. but it's a vision for people to come to Christ.

  7. And as you look at that vision for 10 congregations of 100 core members in about 10 years,

  8. when you look at that, do you think it's possible?

  9. Do you think it's possible?

  10. Some of you will be sceptical because of the world in which we live.

  11. It's going further and further away from Christianity.

  12. Some of you are weary of bearing witness to Jesus and having so many rejections,

  13. and you wonder whether it's possible.

  14. Some of you are pumped up and think it's absolutely possible,

  15. because what we'll do is we just bludgeon people until they become,

  16. we just annoy them until they turn to Christ.

  17. And so for those of you who are not discouraged,

  18. I think maybe you should be.

  19. And those of you who are,

  20. these are words of encouragement and comfort here from the Lord Jesus.

  21. And so grab your Bibles and turn to John 16.

  22. You need your Bibles open in front of you.

  23. I'd like you to follow along with me.

  24. John 16, I'm going to focus primarily on verses 5 to 15.

  25. And it was great to have the rest of it read,

  26. but we're going to focus on 5 to 15.

  27. So we're still with Jesus and the 11 disciples

  28. in the last few hours of Jesus' life

  29. in what is known as the farewell discourse.

  30. For the disciples, it seems that it has been mostly bad news up until this point.

  31. Verse 5 indicates that all this talk of Jesus' impending departure of the Father

  32. via the cross has reduced the disciples to virtual silence.

  33. Or as verse 6 says,

  34. They are filled with grief.

  35. The disciples are so self-absorbed that they are not really asking sympathetic questions

  36. about what Jesus is doing, where he's going, and why.

  37. They are so concerned about their problems,

  38. their own feeling of abandonment,

  39. their sense of impending crisis and doom,

  40. that they do not really listen.

  41. They grieve for themselves.

  42. And yet in verse 7, Jesus says,

  43. But I tell you the truth,

  44. it is for your good that I'm going away.

  45. Unless I go away, the counsellor will not come to you,

  46. but if I go, I will send him to you.

  47. Jesus is saying to these grieving disciples,

  48. feeling the sense of abandonment,

  49. it's going to be better for you once I return to the Father,

  50. because once I've gone, the Holy Spirit will come.

  51. How is that possible?

  52. How is it going to be better for them?

  53. I mean, is this just another one of those good news, bad news jokes,

  54. where the good news isn't really the good news after all?

  55. Like the one I heard of the doctor who visited a patient after surgery

  56. and said to him,

  57. I've got some good news and some bad news.

  58. The bad news is we amputated the wrong leg.

  59. The good news is the bad leg is improving.

  60. Now, the good news actually isn't good news.

  61. It's just simply designed to stake the sting out of the bad news.

  62. And is that what Jesus is doing here in verse 7?

  63. Jesus says,

  64. I think at least a couple of things in this section

  65. that makes the coming of the Holy Spirit good news.

  66. This is really good news.

  67. This is especially important for grieving disciples

  68. who have heard a lot of bad news up until this point.

  69. Not only is Jesus departing,

  70. but they've just heard, as we looked at last week when Sam was preaching,

  71. that when Jesus departs, the world is going to hate them for his sake.

  72. I mean, does it get any worse than this?

  73. And so here's the good news in the coming of the Holy Spirit in this section.

  74. Number one, the Holy Spirit will convict the world.

  75. And number two, the Holy Spirit will minister to the disciples.

  76. We saw last week that with the departure of Jesus,

  77. it will be the disciples who will bear witness to him.

  78. But it will be tough because the world is opposed to Jesus.

  79. The word is, they will hate you for me.

  80. Jesus is, in effect, passing on the baton of the task

  81. of telling the world about him to his disciples.

  82. But the good news here is they're not going to do it alone.

  83. They're not alone in this task.

  84. In fact, I think it would actually be more accurate

  85. to say that Jesus is passing on the baton,

  86. the task of telling the world about Jesus to the Holy Spirit.

  87. So in chapter 15, verse 26, just flick back a little bit,

  88. Jesus says,

  89. When the counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father,

  90. the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father,

  91. he will testify about me.

  92. So the one who is going to testify is no longer Jesus,

  93. but it is the Spirit.

  94. And then if you look into chapter 16, verse 7,

  95. But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I'm going away.

  96. Unless I go away, the counsellor will not come to you,

  97. but if I go, I will send him to you.

  98. And when he comes, he will convict the world of guilt

  99. in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.

  100. That little word convict in verse 8,

  101. I think is the key to understanding verses 8 to 11.

  102. Convict means to bring to light, or it means to expose.

  103. And it has the idea of an exposure which puts to shame.

  104. So the aim of the Holy Spirit's work is not to produce a guilty verdict,

  105. because that is already there according to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  106. The aim is to help us to see the perilous condition in which we stand before God.

  107. It's like a bright spotlight shining into a dark night,

  108. cutting through the darkness and revealing whatever was hidden in the darkness.

  109. The Spirit comes to shine light into the world.

  110. But what we need to see is it happens as the disciples testify to what Jesus has done,

  111. that the Spirit is doing his work of convicting and exposing the world.

  112. So I'll read again from chapter 15, verse 26.

  113. When the counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father,

  114. the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father,

  115. he will testify about me.

  116. And then look at the very next verse.

  117. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

  118. And so the way that the Spirit will convict the world

  119. is as the disciples bear witness to Jesus.

  120. Verses 8 to 11 are the central verses of this section,

  121. and they reveal how the Spirit will convict the world.

  122. He will point the spotlight, if you like,

  123. and he will expose three areas.

  124. The attitudes of the world,

  125. the actions of the world,

  126. and the accountability of the world.

  127. Firstly, when the Spirit comes,

  128. he will convict the world, verse 9,

  129. in regard to sin,

  130. because men do not believe in me.

  131. Sin is where we place ourselves

  132. at the centre of the universe.

  133. It's an attitude that says,

  134. I am the king.

  135. Sin doesn't recognise that Jesus is God's appointed king.

  136. And Jesus says that he will send the Spirit,

  137. and he will be at work in the world,

  138. bringing people to a self-conscious recognition

  139. of personal and collective guilt.

  140. The Spirit will expose the way people reject God,

  141. and the way that they have rejected Jesus.

  142. That they do not believe his claims,

  143. that they do not accept his teaching,

  144. that they do not turn to him for salvation

  145. or discern their need of him.

  146. The Spirit will come,

  147. and as disciples speak,

  148. he will convict the world of their sin,

  149. of rejecting Jesus.

  150. Secondly, the Spirit will expose the actions of the world,

  151. and this has to do with the moral side of sin.

  152. In verse 10,

  153. in regard to righteousness,

  154. because I am going to the Father,

  155. where you can see me no longer.

  156. It is quite amazing that,

  157. as you read through John's Gospel,

  158. to see how often Jesus clashed

  159. with religious people,

  160. with people who thought that

  161. they were doing pretty much okay.

  162. But as Jesus interacts with them,

  163. what he does is he exposes them

  164. as to being complete fakes,

  165. as being shams.

  166. And so the conviction in regard to righteousness here

  167. has an ironic edge to it.

  168. People of the world

  169. do not normally think of themselves

  170. as lost,

  171. as sinners.

  172. We struggle with that.

  173. We have a much better view of ourselves

  174. than we ought.

  175. We naturally think of ourselves

  176. as essentially righteous

  177. until you have Jesus standing beside you.

  178. I used to play tennis every week.

  179. And after a while,

  180. I started to think

  181. I wasn't too bad at the game.

  182. When you play with people

  183. who are 10 to 15 years older than you,

  184. it's not hard to think,

  185. generally.

  186. You pick your opponents well.

  187. I knew I wasn't the best of the game.

  188. I could see that.

  189. But I certainly had my fair share of on days

  190. and a few off days as well.

  191. It wasn't until I did wedding prep

  192. with a guy once,

  193. I went there before going to tennis,

  194. and I had my tennis gear,

  195. and he said,

  196. you play tennis?

  197. I said, yeah, I do.

  198. And he said, fantastic.

  199. Fantastic.

  200. After a few weeks,

  201. he said, I play the occasional game of tennis.

  202. We should play one day.

  203. Awesome.

  204. So this guy was younger than me,

  205. so I thought at the very least,

  206. I'll get some exercise.

  207. And so we get up there,

  208. and the first service told me

  209. that I had made a grave mistake.

  210. This guy was an A-grade tennis player.

  211. And so I'm standing there.

  212. I'm seeing him serve.

  213. I know the ball's going to go to the right.

  214. He does a beautiful kick in his serve.

  215. I dive to the right,

  216. and the ball goes to the left.

  217. There's no...

  218. What?

  219. This guy could make a tennis ball do magic.

  220. It was amazing.

  221. Eventually, I'd just stand there

  222. and just let me watch you play.

  223. You know,

  224. and in the end,

  225. he thrashed me.

  226. I got no point from him.

  227. He didn't even make a mistake

  228. in order for me to get a point.

  229. He thrashed me.

  230. And so the next time,

  231. he said,

  232. we should do this again someday.

  233. Yes.

  234. When I get over this demoralising defeat,

  235. I will do that.

  236. Next time,

  237. I brought in someone else,

  238. and we played doubles against him.

  239. And he thrashed us both.

  240. And so the way to handle that

  241. is just never invite him back again.

  242. And that's what we did.

  243. You see,

  244. after playing with him

  245. for a very short time,

  246. I realised I wasn't such a hotshot.

  247. Perfection does that for you.

  248. It exposes

  249. your weaknesses

  250. and your inadequacies.

  251. And that is what

  252. the perfect life of Jesus did

  253. with everyone he met.

  254. Compared with Jesus,

  255. even the good things that we do,

  256. which are mixed with

  257. bad motives,

  258. are like filthy rags

  259. beside Jesus.

  260. Until a person

  261. who is satisfied

  262. with their own righteousness

  263. perceives its inadequacy,

  264. its self-centredness,

  265. its shortcomings,

  266. its imperfections,

  267. it is difficult

  268. to perceive

  269. how the good news

  270. of the gospel

  271. will ever be received

  272. as good news.

  273. The good news is

  274. that in trusting Jesus,

  275. not only is our sin

  276. placed on Jesus,

  277. but his perfect righteousness

  278. is placed on us.

  279. It becomes ours.

  280. But if it is just

  281. the work of the Holy Spirit

  282. to show up

  283. the false righteousness

  284. of the world,

  285. now that Jesus

  286. returned to the Father,

  287. what part do the disciples

  288. play in that?

  289. If we are walking

  290. with him

  291. and he's our partner

  292. in this,

  293. we know it is the Holy Spirit

  294. who's bare witness,

  295. but the disciples

  296. must also bear witness.

  297. In a sense,

  298. we join the Holy Spirit

  299. in preserving

  300. the presence of Christ

  301. in our Christ-rejecting world.

  302. The Holy Spirit

  303. in part discharges

  304. his witnessing responsibility

  305. by transforming

  306. the righteousness

  307. of the disciples.

  308. The Holy Spirit

  309. works

  310. in the disciple

  311. of Jesus

  312. to produce

  313. deep

  314. biblical

  315. righteousness

  316. which convicts

  317. the world

  318. of its unrighteousness.

  319. Our lives matter.

  320. Our righteousness

  321. matters.

  322. the world

  323. ought to be

  324. convicted

  325. of their

  326. unrighteousness

  327. by our righteousness.

  328. So whether it is

  329. through

  330. his own

  331. secret operation

  332. or through

  333. the disciples

  334. of Jesus,

  335. the Spirit

  336. is actively

  337. transforming.

  338. Through the disciples

  339. of Jesus,

  340. he's actively

  341. transforming,

  342. he confronts

  343. the world

  344. with the

  345. inadequacy

  346. of its

  347. own

  348. self-righteousness.

  349. The third

  350. exposing work

  351. of the Holy Spirit

  352. is that he will

  353. expose the world

  354. to accountability.

  355. People are not

  356. right with God

  357. because they have

  358. rejected Christ

  359. and therefore

  360. they deserve

  361. God's

  362. punishment.

  363. And the Holy Spirit's

  364. job is

  365. in effect

  366. to pull our

  367. heads out of

  368. the sand

  369. so that we can

  370. recognize

  371. the grave danger

  372. that we are in.

  373. the Holy Spirit

  374. helps us to see

  375. that we are on

  376. a collision course

  377. of judgment

  378. with God

  379. and that on

  380. that process

  381. of that collision

  382. course

  383. that all our

  384. judgments

  385. about Christ

  386. and about God

  387. and about the

  388. spiritual realm

  389. and about life

  390. and death

  391. are all wrong

  392. judgments

  393. without the

  394. Spirit.

  395. And so how

  396. does the Spirit

  397. do that?

  398. Verse 11

  399. He will expose

  400. the world

  401. of judgment

  402. because

  403. the prince

  404. of this world

  405. now stands

  406. condemned.

  407. He's talking

  408. about Satan

  409. when he talks

  410. about the prince

  411. of this world.

  412. One of the first

  413. things that happened

  414. when Hitler

  415. was overthrown

  416. was that all

  417. his cronies

  418. apart from those

  419. who committed suicide

  420. and those who were

  421. captured

  422. they headed off

  423. to South America.

  424. Hitler had fallen

  425. and their own

  426. downfall

  427. and their own

  428. judgment

  429. was a certainty

  430. as a result.

  431. And so as Jesus

  432. goes to the cross

  433. he sets in motion

  434. a sequence of events

  435. almost like a

  436. domino effect.

  437. Because Satan

  438. has been judged

  439. then the overthrow

  440. of every individual

  441. who belongs to him

  442. is a certainty.

  443. If your attitude

  444. to Jesus

  445. is one of rejection

  446. then you are

  447. in fact siding

  448. with the prince

  449. of this world.

  450. And your eventual

  451. overthrow

  452. like his

  453. your eventual

  454. judgment

  455. is a

  456. dead certainty.

  457. And so the

  458. Holy Spirit

  459. shines the light

  460. of the gospel

  461. of our Lord

  462. Jesus Christ

  463. in such a way

  464. that our hearts

  465. and our minds

  466. our judgments

  467. are all

  468. exposed

  469. for what they

  470. are.

  471. False.

  472. Fake.

  473. You see

  474. having cotton

  475. onto the

  476. onto the fact

  477. that our attitude

  478. is one of rebellion

  479. having seen

  480. our actions

  481. as like filthy

  482. rags to God

  483. it is clear

  484. that we are

  485. accountable to God

  486. and that my friends

  487. is not the work

  488. of your intellect

  489. it is the work

  490. of the Holy Spirit.

  491. Without the work

  492. of the Spirit

  493. shining

  494. that into your

  495. heart

  496. and into your mind

  497. you are not

  498. capable of seeing it.

  499. The world

  500. is so depraved

  501. left to our own

  502. devices

  503. we are so

  504. depraved

  505. we fail

  506. to discern

  507. what sin

  508. righteousness

  509. and judgment

  510. really are

  511. and only

  512. by the Spirit's

  513. deep convicting

  514. work

  515. can we ever

  516. hope to recognize

  517. the magnitude

  518. of our misconceptions

  519. and our gross

  520. unbelief.

  521. And so

  522. these verses

  523. I believe

  524. serve to

  525. foster

  526. a quiet

  527. confidence

  528. in the heart

  529. of every

  530. believer

  531. as we face

  532. the responsibility

  533. to bear witness

  534. to Jesus.

  535. These verses

  536. firstly

  537. humble us

  538. and realize

  539. what we are

  540. not capable

  541. of doing

  542. and secondly

  543. they are there

  544. to foster

  545. a quiet

  546. confidence

  547. in the heart

  548. of every believer

  549. with the

  550. responsibility

  551. to bear witness

  552. to Jesus.

  553. we look

  554. around the

  555. world

  556. and we

  557. wonder

  558. how we

  559. can ever

  560. persuade

  561. people to

  562. believe in

  563. the gospel

  564. of the

  565. Lord

  566. Jesus

  567. it just

  568. seems like

  569. nuts

  570. on the

  571. surface

  572. we know

  573. we don't

  574. want to

  575. stoop to

  576. gimmicks

  577. and playing

  578. tricks

  579. and manipulation

  580. and we

  581. know that

  582. in the

  583. end

  584. intellectual

  585. arguments

  586. why they're

  587. helpful

  588. they alone

  589. don't guarantee

  590. anything

  591. because it's

  592. not a matter

  593. of the

  594. intellect

  595. we know

  596. of people

  597. who know

  598. certain facts

  599. about

  600. Christianity

  601. who

  602. probably

  603. even know

  604. the right

  605. facts about

  606. Jesus

  607. and yet

  608. who refuse

  609. to trust

  610. Jesus

  611. we often

  612. wonder

  613. how will

  614. we ever

  615. penetrate

  616. the wall

  617. of unbelief

  618. how will

  619. we ever

  620. penetrate

  621. the wall

  622. of unbelief

  623. in Chatswood

  624. let me

  625. tell you

  626. I would

  627. quit

  628. Christian

  629. ministry

  630. immediately

  631. if I

  632. was not

  633. convinced

  634. that it's

  635. the Lord

  636. Jesus

  637. who is

  638. building

  639. his

  640. church

  641. and if

  642. it wasn't

  643. that the

  644. father had

  645. given people

  646. to his

  647. son

  648. and that

  649. the Holy

  650. Spirit

  651. is working

  652. in the

  653. world

  654. to convict

  655. the world

  656. of its

  657. sin

  658. and its

  659. righteousness

  660. and its

  661. judgment

  662. I have

  663. no confidence

  664. that on

  665. my own

  666. I could

  667. successfully

  668. persuade

  669. anyone

  670. including

  671. my

  672. children

  673. and I

  674. can

  675. persuade

  676. them

  677. of most

  678. things

  679. I have

  680. no confidence

  681. on my own

  682. that I could

  683. successfully

  684. persuade

  685. anyone

  686. of their

  687. deepest

  688. need

  689. and of

  690. the truth

  691. of the

  692. gospel

  693. of the

  694. Lord

  695. Jesus

  696. Christ

  697. and therefore

  698. I find

  699. this passage

  700. comforting

  701. I have

  702. not

  703. been

  704. abandoned

  705. to do

  706. the task

  707. of bearing

  708. witness to

  709. the Lord

  710. Jesus

  711. such a

  712. perspective

  713. feels my

  714. labour

  715. and ought

  716. to feel

  717. your labour

  718. for Christ

  719. with such

  720. a supreme

  721. significance

  722. that it

  723. ought to

  724. obliterate

  725. any fear

  726. of failure

  727. because

  728. your work

  729. for the

  730. Lord

  731. is not

  732. in

  733. vain

  734. but wait

  735. there's

  736. more

  737. there's

  738. more to

  739. come from

  740. this

  741. passage

  742. I was

  743. tempted

  744. to leave

  745. it there

  746. but we'd

  747. only

  748. probably

  749. filled

  750. in 15

  751. minutes

  752. some of

  753. you may

  754. say that's

  755. enough

  756. there is a

  757. second ministry

  758. the Holy

  759. Spirit

  760. and it

  761. is linked

  762. and it

  763. is very

  764. precious

  765. it's

  766. there in

  767. verse 12

  768. I have

  769. much more

  770. to say

  771. to you

  772. much more

  773. than you

  774. can now

  775. bear

  776. and so

  777. there is

  778. a sense

  779. where

  780. these

  781. eleven

  782. can't

  783. take

  784. any more

  785. from

  786. Jesus

  787. because

  788. their

  789. confusion

  790. and grief

  791. they are

  792. experiencing

  793. and there's

  794. also a

  795. sense

  796. where they

  797. can't

  798. fully

  799. grasp

  800. it

  801. until

  802. after

  803. the

  804. death

  805. and

  806. resurrection

  807. and

  808. ascension

  809. of

  810. Jesus

  811. there's

  812. not

  813. clarity

  814. to what

  815. Jesus

  816. is saying

  817. at this

  818. point

  819. for them

  820. and so

  821. here's

  822. the second

  823. aspect

  824. of the

  825. Holy

  826. Spirit's

  827. work

  828. he will

  829. complete

  830. the

  831. revelation

  832. of God

  833. in Jesus

  834. Christ

  835. verse 13

  836. but when

  837. he the

  838. spirit of

  839. truth

  840. comes

  841. he will

  842. guide you

  843. into all

  844. truth

  845. he will

  846. not speak

  847. on his

  848. own

  849. he will

  850. speak

  851. only

  852. what he

  853. hears

  854. and he

  855. will tell

  856. you

  857. what is

  858. yet

  859. to come

  860. chapter 14

  861. in chapter

  862. 14

  863. Jesus

  864. promised

  865. that the

  866. spirit of

  867. truth

  868. will remind

  869. the

  870. disciples

  871. of everything

  872. that Jesus

  873. taught

  874. them

  875. now he

  876. is promising

  877. something a

  878. little bit

  879. more

  880. the 11

  881. disciples

  882. will be

  883. led

  884. into a

  885. true

  886. understanding

  887. of the

  888. saving

  889. events

  890. which are

  891. about to

  892. take place

  893. they will

  894. get clarity

  895. on the

  896. death and

  897. resurrection

  898. and ascension

  899. of Jesus

  900. and they

  901. will be

  902. given

  903. glimpses

  904. of the

  905. future

  906. the final

  907. climax

  908. of world

  909. history

  910. will

  911. partially

  912. be

  913. unveiled

  914. to them

  915. so that

  916. they will

  917. be able

  918. to get

  919. a glimpse

  920. of the

  921. sweep

  922. of God's

  923. enormous

  924. plan of

  925. salvation

  926. and the

  927. central

  928. part

  929. that Jesus

  930. plays in

  931. it all

  932. that's a

  933. promise

  934. for a

  935. confused

  936. bewilding

  937. disciples

  938. but in

  939. leading them

  940. to this

  941. truth

  942. the Holy

  943. Spirit

  944. was not

  945. going to

  946. speak

  947. on his

  948. own

  949. Jesus

  950. insists

  951. he will

  952. speak

  953. only

  954. what

  955. he

  956. hears

  957. the

  958. spirit

  959. will

  960. only

  961. speak

  962. of

  963. what

  964. he

  965. hears

  966. verse

  967. 13

  968. but when

  969. he

  970. the

  971. spirit

  972. of

  973. truth

  974. comes

  975. he

  976. will

  977. guide

  978. you

  979. into

  980. all

  981. truth

  982. he

  983. will

  984. not

  985. speak

  986. on

  987. his

  988. own

  989. he

  990. will

  991. speak

  992. only

  993. what

  994. he

  995. hears

  996. and

  997. he

  998. will

  999. tell

  1000. you

  1001. what

  1002. is

  1003. yet

  1004. to

  1005. come

  1006. he

  1007. will

  1008. bring

  1009. glory

  1010. to

  1011. me

  1012. by

  1013. taking

  1014. from

  1015. what

  1016. is

  1017. mine

  1018. and

  1019. making

  1020. it

  1021. known

  1022. to

  1023. you

  1024. all

  1025. that

  1026. belongs

  1027. to

  1028. the

  1029. father

  1030. is

  1031. mine

  1032. that

  1033. is

  1034. why

  1035. I

  1036. said

  1037. the

  1038. spirit

  1039. will

  1040. take

  1041. from

  1042. what

  1043. is

  1044. mine

  1045. and

  1046. make

  1047. it

  1048. known

  1049. to

  1050. you

  1051. and

  1052. so

  1053. what

  1054. these

  1055. verses

  1056. saying

  1057. is

  1058. that

  1059. the

  1060. general

  1061. subject

  1062. matter

  1063. of

  1064. the

  1065. spirit

  1066. is

  1067. restricted

  1068. but

  1069. it

  1070. is

  1071. a

  1072. glorious

  1073. restriction

  1074. the

  1075. spirit

  1076. will

  1077. take

  1078. that

  1079. which

  1080. is

  1081. Jesus

  1082. is

  1083. and

  1084. make

  1085. it

  1086. known

  1087. to

  1088. the

  1089. disciples

  1090. of

  1091. Jesus

  1092. and

  1093. so

  1094. the

  1095. focus

  1096. here

  1097. is

  1098. entirely

  1099. on

  1100. Jesus

  1101. even

  1102. when

  1103. the

  1104. spirit

  1105. comes

  1106. the

  1107. role

  1108. of

  1109. the

  1110. spirit

  1111. here

  1112. is

  1113. to

  1114. bring

  1115. glory

  1116. to

  1117. Jesus

  1118. as

  1119. it

  1120. says

  1121. it

  1122. was

  1123. necessary

  1124. for

  1125. Jesus

  1126. to

  1127. be

  1128. glorified

  1129. by

  1130. going

  1131. to

  1132. the

  1133. father

  1134. by

  1135. way

  1136. of

  1137. the

  1138. cross

  1139. but

  1140. when

  1141. he

  1142. leaves

  1143. it's

  1144. not

  1145. time

  1146. now

  1147. for

  1148. the

  1149. spirit

  1150. to

  1151. receive

  1152. glory

  1153. but

  1154. for

  1155. Christ

  1156. to

  1157. receive

  1158. more

  1159. glory

  1160. through

  1161. the

  1162. ministry

  1163. of

  1164. the

  1165. spirit

  1166. and

  1167. that

  1168. of

  1169. his

  1170. disciples

  1171. as

  1172. Jesus

  1173. took

  1174. that

  1175. which

  1176. belongs

  1177. to

  1178. the

  1179. father

  1180. and

  1181. made

  1182. it

  1183. known

  1184. to

  1185. his

  1186. disciples

  1187. so

  1188. the

  1189. spirit

  1190. takes

  1191. that

  1192. which

  1193. belongs

  1194. to

  1195. Jesus

  1196. and

  1197. makes

  1198. it

  1199. known

  1200. to

  1201. us

  1202. nothing

  1203. brings

  1204. more

  1205. glory

  1206. to

  1207. our

  1208. Lord

  1209. Jesus

  1210. than

  1211. for

  1212. his

  1213. followers

  1214. to

  1215. become

  1216. steeped

  1217. in

  1218. all

  1219. truth

  1220. concerning

  1221. him

  1222. let me

  1223. just say

  1224. that

  1225. again

  1226. nothing

  1227. brings

  1228. more

  1229. glory

  1230. to

  1231. our

  1232. Lord

  1233. Jesus

  1234. than

  1235. for

  1236. his

  1237. followers

  1238. to

  1239. become

  1240. steeped

  1241. in

  1242. all

  1243. truth

  1244. concerning

  1245. him

  1246. of

  1247. course

  1248. the

  1249. acquisition

  1250. of

  1251. that

  1252. truth

  1253. is

  1254. intellectual

  1255. but

  1256. it

  1257. is

  1258. not

  1259. merely

  1260. intellectual

  1261. so

  1262. if

  1263. you're

  1264. down

  1265. the

  1266. line

  1267. which

  1268. says

  1269. we

  1270. need

  1271. to

  1272. abandon

  1273. intellectualism

  1274. in the

  1275. Christian

  1276. faith

  1277. you

  1278. need

  1279. to

  1280. feel

  1281. stuff

  1282. about

  1283. the

  1284. spirit

  1285. you're

  1286. wrong

  1287. if

  1288. you're

  1289. down

  1290. the

  1291. other

  1292. line

  1293. and

  1294. says

  1295. what

  1296. we

  1297. need

  1298. to

  1299. do

  1300. is

  1301. sit

  1302. and

  1303. contemplate

  1304. and

  1305. just

  1306. intellectualize

  1307. this

  1308. stuff

  1309. and

  1310. not

  1311. be

  1312. moved

  1313. to

  1314. worship

  1315. out

  1316. of

  1317. the

  1318. heart

  1319. you're

  1320. wrong

  1321. as

  1322. this

  1323. truth

  1324. is

  1325. truly

  1326. absorbed

  1327. by the

  1328. followers

  1329. of the

  1330. Lord

  1331. Jesus

  1332. it

  1333. transforms

  1334. us

  1335. enabling

  1336. us

  1337. to

  1338. reflect

  1339. the

  1340. righteousness

  1341. and the

  1342. glory

  1343. of the

  1344. Lord

  1345. Jesus

  1346. and

  1347. thereby

  1348. bring

  1349. praise

  1350. to his

  1351. name

  1352. glory

  1353. comes

  1354. to

  1355. Jesus

  1356. when

  1357. the

  1358. truths

  1359. of the

  1360. gospel

  1361. are

  1362. established

  1363. in

  1364. our

  1365. lives

  1366. in

  1367. such

  1368. a

  1369. way

  1370. that

  1371. we

  1372. are

  1373. overwhelmed

  1374. to

  1375. the

  1376. point

  1377. of

  1378. praise

  1379. and

  1380. overflow

  1381. in

  1382. righteousness

  1383. and

  1384. so

  1385. the

  1386. bad

  1387. news

  1388. the

  1389. disciples

  1390. are

  1391. grieving

  1392. over

  1393. here

  1394. is

  1395. that

  1396. Jesus

  1397. going

  1398. to

  1399. the

  1400. cross

  1401. is

  1402. in

  1403. fact

  1404. actually

  1405. the

  1406. good

  1407. news

  1408. it

  1409. really

  1410. is

  1411. good

  1412. news

  1413. it

  1414. is

  1415. good

  1416. news

  1417. for

  1418. us

  1419. and

  1420. it

  1421. was

  1422. good

  1423. news

  1424. for

  1425. them

  1426. and

  1427. it's

  1428. in

  1429. fact

  1430. good

  1431. news

  1432. for

  1433. the

  1434. rest

  1435. of

  1436. the

  1437. world

  1438. and

  1439. so

  1440. can

  1441. I

  1442. say

  1443. I

  1444. just

  1445. want

  1446. to

  1447. praise

  1448. God

  1449. that

  1450. we

  1451. are

  1452. not

  1453. left

  1454. alone

  1455. to do

  1456. this

  1457. work

  1458. of

  1459. bearing

  1460. witness

  1461. to

  1462. Jesus

  1463. in

  1464. Chatswood

  1465. and

  1466. beyond

  1467. Chatswood

  1468. we're

  1469. not

  1470. left

  1471. alone

  1472. to

  1473. that

  1474. task

  1475. if

  1476. you

  1477. feel

  1478. inadequate

  1479. to

  1480. that

  1481. task

  1482. I

  1483. think

  1484. you

  1485. probably

  1486. should

  1487. praise

  1488. God

  1489. that

  1490. the

  1491. spirit

  1492. is

  1493. at

  1494. work

  1495. in

  1496. this

  1497. world

  1498. bringing

  1499. conviction

  1500. as

  1501. we

  1502. faithfully

  1503. and

  1504. boldly

  1505. speak

  1506. out

  1507. the

  1508. truth

  1509. of

  1510. the

  1511. gospel

  1512. praise

  1513. God

  1514. that

  1515. the

  1516. work

  1517. of

  1518. the

  1519. spirit

  1520. is

  1521. bringing

  1522. the

  1523. truths

  1524. of

  1525. Christ

  1526. into

  1527. my

  1528. life

  1529. and

  1530. I

  1531. pray

  1532. that

  1533. he

  1534. will

  1535. continue

  1536. to bring

  1537. transformation

  1538. to me

  1539. and to

  1540. you

  1541. so that

  1542. we shine

  1543. forth

  1544. not just

  1545. the truth

  1546. of the

  1547. gospel

  1548. but the

  1549. life of

  1550. righteousness

  1551. as well

  1552. so may we

  1553. consistently

  1554. here at

  1555. St. Paul's

  1556. rely upon the

  1557. spirit for

  1558. empowerment

  1559. to lead us

  1560. into all

  1561. truth

  1562. and for

  1563. that truth

  1564. to bring

  1565. transformation

  1566. to our

  1567. lives

  1568. and for

  1569. that

  1570. transformation

  1571. that

  1572. truth

  1573. to have

  1574. an

  1575. impact

  1576. in

  1577. such

  1578. a

  1579. way

  1580. that

  1581. we

  1582. bear

  1583. witness

  1584. to

  1585. this

  1586. world

  1587. and the

  1588. spirit

  1589. will bring

  1590. conviction

  1591. to people's

  1592. lives

  1593. for their

  1594. great need

  1595. for Christ

  1596. for his

  1597. glory

  1598. forever

  1599. and ever

  1600. Amen
