  1. So I tell you this and insist on it in the Lord,

  2. that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do in the futility of their thinking.

  3. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God

  4. because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

  5. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality

  6. so as to indulge in every kind of impurity with a continual lust for more.

  7. You, however, did not come to know Christ that way.

  8. Surely you have heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

  9. You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self,

  10. which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires,

  11. to be made new in the attitude of your minds,

  12. and to put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

  13. Therefore, each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbour,

  14. for we are all members of one body.

  15. In your anger, do not sin.

  16. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

  17. and do not give the devil a foothold.

  18. He who has been stealing must steal no longer,

  19. but must work doing something useful with his own hands

  20. that he may have something to share with those in need.

  21. Do not let any unwholesome talk come from your mouths,

  22. but only let what is helpful for building others up according to their needs,

  23. that it may benefit those who listen.

  24. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,

  25. with whom you are sealed for the day of redemption.

  26. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger,

  27. brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

  28. Be kind and compassionate to one another,

  29. forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

  30. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children,

  31. and live a life of love, just as Christ loved and gave himself up for us,

  32. as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

  33. Be among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality

  34. or of any kind of impurity or of greed,

  35. because these are improper for God's holy people.

  36. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking,

  37. which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

  38. It would be great if you could have that passage in front of you, ready to go,

  39. as we continue to look through the book of Ephesians.

  40. I don't know about you, but after a couple of hits in the short space of time,

  41. you might be feeling a little bit fuzzy in the brain,

  42. so I'm going to ask God to sharpen us,

  43. so that we can hear him speak this morning.

  44. So let's pray.

  45. Father God, we want to thank and praise you for your word.

  46. We thank you that you're a God who has revealed himself

  47. and who wants us to know him.

  48. We thank you that you are a God who shows us things in our lives that need to change,

  49. that you're a God who gives us the answers.

  50. Lord, you don't leave us to guess.

  51. And we ask this morning that you would take away tiredness or distraction or anything else

  52. and enable us to hear you speak,

  53. the result being that we might be more like your son

  54. and that our lives might give you more glory.

  55. Amen.

  56. I remember when I was growing up, I used to be a bit of a church event junkie.

  57. So I used to go to a lot of different church events.

  58. I used to do two youth groups when I was in high school.

  59. On Friday night, I'd go to my local Anglican church,

  60. and on Saturday night, I'd go to my local Pentecostal church

  61. because I couldn't get enough of youth group.

  62. And I remember something that struck me as I hung around youth groups and events

  63. was these incredible testimonies that evangelists had.

  64. It seemed like a prerequisite to being a guest preacher

  65. was a serious drug habit somewhere in life.

  66. And I remember I used to sit there and think,

  67. this is not long after I'd become a Christian.

  68. I knew that I wanted to spend my life telling people about Jesus,

  69. and I was thinking, where am I going to squeeze this drug habit in?

  70. I'm busy.

  71. I've got time.

  72. And I'd be looking at my life and thinking, my life's so boring.

  73. It's reasonably good.

  74. And I had some stuff that I thought was pretty serious.

  75. But when I heard these testimonies, my life just sounded like I was already a Christian.

  76. I'd just forgotten to go to church.

  77. But the problem was that I'd completely misunderstood what my life was like in God's eyes.

  78. I'd completely misunderstood what God saw when He looked at my life.

  79. And for the Ephesians, Paul comes to this point in chapter 4,

  80. and there's been a shift in this second half of the book.

  81. He started to really drive on the practical application of what he's been talking about.

  82. He's been talking about the significant work that God has been doing.

  83. In chapter 1, we learn about the gospel of Jesus,

  84. by which we were chosen and predestined and adopted and forgiven.

  85. And in chapter 2, he reminds them that in Christ they were brought from death to life.

  86. There's a significant work that has gone on.

  87. And then he begins chapter 4 by saying,

  88. As a prisoner for the Lord then, I urge you to live a life worthy of that calling.

  89. This second half is all about what that life in the gospel is supposed to look like.

  90. But here, in this second part of chapter 4,

  91. it's like Paul needs the Ephesians to look again at what their life is like without Jesus.

  92. It's like the Ephesians maybe, like I used to, have looked at their life and thought,

  93. we were kind of not amazing before, but we weren't bad either.

  94. A few subtle changes and we'll be pretty sorted for this new life that God has called us to.

  95. But in case they've missed the phrase dead in chapter 2,

  96. Paul goes hard again here.

  97. Have a look at verses 17 to 19.

  98. I mean, this isn't subtle.

  99. This is an absolute denunciation, an absolute slamming of the way of life without Jesus.

  100. He says,

  101. I tell you this and insist on it in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do.

  102. And for the Jews, Gentiles is the same as what we would think of as pagans.

  103. For the people who don't know Jesus, he says,

  104. I insist you must no longer live like they do in the futility of their thinking.

  105. See, their way of life is based on a hopeless thinking.

  106. They can't actually use their mind to understand their existence and their earth

  107. and what the right path for their life is.

  108. There is a futility and a hopelessness even in their ability to choose right and wrong.

  109. It says they're dark in their understanding.

  110. They're separated from life.

  111. You've got to hear it again.

  112. Without Jesus, you were dead.

  113. Dead in your transgressions and sins.

  114. Separated from God.

  115. Cut off from the source of life.

  116. And ignorant.

  117. Hard-hearted.

  118. Lost all sensitivity.

  119. It's like sin has become second nature.

  120. Sin is the normal.

  121. It's like this happens for us as an ongoing challenge.

  122. I remember finding myself as a younger man

  123. perfectly okay with the increasing nudity and profanity

  124. that I would find on television.

  125. I remember as a 10, 11, a 12-year-old,

  126. I'd get really embarrassed if there was nudity on television

  127. and I'd run out of the room or my parents would cover my eyes

  128. or something like that.

  129. But progressively, I got desensitized

  130. to the point where it was normal.

  131. That's what's on TV.

  132. So I'd just watch it.

  133. And Paul is saying that's what life is like before Jesus.

  134. There's no sense of this is wrong.

  135. It's natural.

  136. Your life is completely on a path of disobedience to God.

  137. Your life is consumed by it.

  138. It's like you're gathering up impurity.

  139. It says there in verse 19,

  140. Without God as the standard for our lives,

  141. the only standard here is sensuality.

  142. It's the things that I feel right now.

  143. It's me.

  144. I'm the center of the universe.

  145. Paul says that is the existence of every non-believer.

  146. Now, at first, we feel this kind of awkwardness.

  147. Isn't that a bit harsh?

  148. I know some nice non-Christians.

  149. I know some non-Christians that seem to do good things.

  150. But the point here is that sin,

  151. that the life without God is life without God.

  152. That's what sin is.

  153. Sin is life lived outside of God's rule.

  154. And it's there.

  155. Without Jesus, they're cut off from life.

  156. They're separated from God.

  157. So people who don't know Jesus,

  158. this is the reality of their life.

  159. They are driven by their sensual desires.

  160. They're cut off from life.

  161. And they are just building up impurity.

  162. And they are on a path of futility.

  163. But Paul says in verse 17,

  164. This is not okay anymore if you're following Jesus.

  165. This is what it used to be.

  166. This was your life.

  167. This is your evangelist story, if you like.

  168. This is the path that you can't continue on anymore.

  169. You can't just live the same life with church attendance.

  170. The gospel, Jesus, as has been explained all through chapters 1 to 3,

  171. brings a new life.

  172. It brings a transformation.

  173. It brings something different.

  174. Look at verse 20.

  175. You, however, this is the contrast,

  176. did not come to know Christ that way.

  177. Surely you heard of him and were taught in him

  178. in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

  179. You were taught with regard to your former way of life

  180. to put off your old self,

  181. which has been corrupted by its deceitful desires.

  182. Paul says you now know Jesus.

  183. You now know what is true.

  184. There's no hopelessness in your thinking anymore.

  185. You can't claim ignorance as an excuse for the sin in your life.

  186. You have been shown the truth.

  187. The mystery has been revealed in chapter 3.

  188. And so for us, we're not ignorantly wallowing in the mud

  189. because we don't know any better.

  190. To continue in our old lifestyle

  191. is to willingly reject the gospel.

  192. It's to willingly deny the headship and lordship of Jesus

  193. that was won on the cross.

  194. To continue in your life the same way as it was before Jesus

  195. is to reject the blood of Jesus which was shed for you

  196. so you might be forgiven.

  197. A life worthy of the gospel must be different.

  198. A life worthy of what Jesus has done

  199. can't even be just a changed life.

  200. It's got to be a new life.

  201. Death is where we were before.

  202. Cut off from God.

  203. Cut off from life is our starting point.

  204. And so the life in Christ is so radically transformed

  205. that it is new.

  206. It is unrecognizable.

  207. It is different.

  208. And so Paul calls the Ephesians in this passage

  209. and God is calling us today

  210. to put off the old life.

  211. To leave the habits.

  212. To leave the sinful patterns.

  213. And to put off the old life.

  214. Because it is being corrupted.

  215. But there's something really interesting there.

  216. What is it that's corrupting that old life?

  217. Have a look there in verse 22.

  218. Put off your old life, your old self,

  219. which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.

  220. It's your deceitful desires that have corrupted your old life.

  221. Before you say,

  222. I was ignorant.

  223. I didn't know what I was doing.

  224. Human sinfulness is so ingrained

  225. that it is us that corrupts our life.

  226. It is us that cuts ourselves off from God.

  227. And to continue in that path,

  228. it is your desires that will try and drag you there.

  229. Your desires will wage war with this new life

  230. that the Spirit is working in you.

  231. Your own sinful human nature

  232. will do everything

  233. to keep you rooted in that old life

  234. that you once existed in.

  235. That is unless you fight

  236. to put off the old self.

  237. We significantly underestimate

  238. just how sinful we are.

  239. We think that sin is an issue, sure,

  240. but it's a small issue.

  241. In fact, we're so good

  242. at distorting the truth of sin

  243. that we can convince ourselves

  244. that when we're sinning,

  245. not only are we not doing the wrong thing,

  246. but we can even make it noble sometimes.

  247. I was listening to a sermon recently

  248. and the preacher told a story about a man

  249. that he met at a conference

  250. and this man approached him

  251. and started speaking proudly

  252. of his wife and his girlfriend.

  253. And the preacher pushed back going,

  254. hang on a sec,

  255. what do you mean your wife and your girlfriend?

  256. And so the man,

  257. without missing a beat,

  258. started explaining,

  259. well, my wife is quite cold

  260. and disconnected

  261. and our marriage wasn't really working,

  262. but now I have this woman

  263. who cares for my emotional needs

  264. and my physical needs

  265. and so it's saved my marriage.

  266. That's a true story.

  267. He had so twisted the truth

  268. that he convinced himself

  269. not only is adultery not wrong,

  270. it's a good idea.

  271. It's the way to fix the problems

  272. in his marriage.

  273. He's convinced himself that it's wise

  274. and it sounds ridiculous

  275. because that's not our sin.

  276. But think of the ways

  277. that we daily convince ourselves

  278. that dishonesty is a good idea.

  279. We can always find a noble outcome

  280. for dishonesty

  281. so that it's the right thing to do.

  282. Think of the way you convince yourself

  283. that speeding is a good idea

  284. so that you get to church on time

  285. because church is an important place to be.

  286. So complete and so disgusting

  287. is our sinful nature

  288. that we can convince ourselves,

  289. we can justify ourselves

  290. to the point where sin is not a vice

  291. but a virtue.

  292. So complete is the rebellion in our old life

  293. that if we continue to walk in it,

  294. we reject the grace offered

  295. in the gospel.

  296. Paul is calling the Ephesians here

  297. having reminded them

  298. in those first three chapters

  299. of the incredible grace and love

  300. that God has shown them in Jesus.

  301. He calls them here

  302. to an active life change.

  303. There is no possibility

  304. of being passive in this activity.

  305. In Christ they've been given knowledge,

  306. they've been given the freedom

  307. from the ignorance and the darkness

  308. and the hard-heartedness

  309. and the hopelessness

  310. and now they can choose

  311. to put off that old life

  312. that is dead.

  313. Now we are actually released

  314. to choose what God has shown us

  315. is right

  316. but understand that this putting off

  317. will be a daily struggle

  318. until Jesus comes back.

  319. It will be a daily struggle.

  320. The life worthy of the gospel of Jesus

  321. demands that there is an ongoing

  322. every minute of every day

  323. putting off of old habits that deny God

  324. and putting on holiness, righteousness

  325. and God-likeness.

  326. That's what it says there in the passage.

  327. Verse 22 finishes,

  328. put off your old self

  329. which has been corrupted

  330. by its deceitful desires

  331. to be made new

  332. in the attitude of your minds

  333. and to put on the new self

  334. created to be like God

  335. in true righteousness

  336. and holiness.

  337. What Paul is demanding here

  338. is that the Ephesians

  339. be recreated.

  340. That's what he's asking them to do.

  341. He's saying an old life

  342. goes

  343. and a new life begins

  344. and the only way

  345. a new life begins

  346. is creation

  347. and the only one who creates

  348. is God.

  349. He is saying

  350. you need to swap death

  351. for life,

  352. darkness for light,

  353. unwise for wise

  354. and as a young kid

  355. I just couldn't understand

  356. that my old life was dead.

  357. I couldn't see it as dead.

  358. I could see those evangelist lives

  359. as dead

  360. with the drugs

  361. and the guns

  362. and the whatever else.

  363. All I saw was good people

  364. and bad people.

  365. Bad people who met Jesus

  366. needed to change

  367. and good people like me

  368. who met Jesus

  369. needed to start going to church.

  370. I couldn't grasp that

  371. to God my life was disgusting.

  372. That it was dead

  373. and rotting

  374. and decaying

  375. and even more so

  376. I didn't grasp

  377. the blinding light

  378. of the life

  379. that God was calling me to.

  380. I didn't understand

  381. that following Jesus

  382. meant a recreation.

  383. It meant a whole new existence.

  384. It meant that there is nothing

  385. similar about my old life

  386. and my new life.

  387. God is calling us

  388. from one extreme

  389. of willful rebellion

  390. to wholehearted

  391. absolute

  392. unquestioned

  393. devotion.

  394. Jesus is demanding

  395. change.

  396. Verse 23 again

  397. says,

  398. Be made new

  399. in the attitude

  400. of your minds

  401. and put on

  402. the new self

  403. created to be like God

  404. in true righteousness

  405. and holiness

  406. exchanging impurity

  407. for righteousness

  408. futility

  409. for renewal

  410. sensuality

  411. for holiness

  412. the ultimate

  413. and complete

  414. transformation.

  415. Now,

  416. I don't know about you

  417. but I often get

  418. uncomfortable

  419. when people,

  420. particularly non-Christians,

  421. make comments

  422. about how Christians

  423. are supposed to be

  424. the good people.

  425. It usually comes

  426. in the context

  427. of a Christian

  428. who's stuffed up

  429. and they're letting us

  430. know that we've

  431. stuffed up

  432. but my response

  433. has always been,

  434. no,

  435. we're not supposed

  436. to be good,

  437. we're just forgiven.

  438. I usually walk away

  439. feeling kind of smug

  440. and look,

  441. that's kind of true

  442. but in this passage

  443. in Ephesians

  444. Paul is saying

  445. that a life

  446. worthy of the gospel

  447. does involve change,

  448. that there is

  449. a goodness,

  450. that there is

  451. a morality

  452. that should mark

  453. the people of God.

  454. There should be

  455. a visible difference

  456. between those

  457. who are darkened

  458. in their understanding

  459. and hardened

  460. in their hearts

  461. and those who have

  462. been brought

  463. to know Jesus.

  464. Those who have

  465. been forgiven

  466. and cleansed

  467. and set free.

  468. And the scary part

  469. in this passage

  470. for me is that

  471. it feels like

  472. some of the responsibility

  473. sits with us.

  474. In verse 22,

  475. we were taught

  476. to put off

  477. the old self.

  478. You put off

  479. the old self.

  480. In verse 24,

  481. you put on

  482. the new self.

  483. It's we

  484. who are to

  485. consciously

  486. and actively

  487. wrestle with sin

  488. in our lives.

  489. We are to

  490. actively

  491. and consciously

  492. and desperately

  493. seek God-likeness,

  494. seek righteousness,

  495. seek holiness.

  496. There's this

  497. incredible list

  498. of examples

  499. in the verses

  500. that follow.

  501. We're to stop

  502. stealing

  503. and instead

  504. be generous.

  505. We're to stop

  506. lying and instead

  507. speak truthfully.

  508. We're to avoid

  509. sinning and anger

  510. and instead

  511. be forgiving

  512. and compassionate

  513. and gracious.

  514. We are to use

  515. our words

  516. to build others

  517. up and not tear

  518. down.

  519. We're to forgive

  520. like Jesus did.

  521. We're to avoid

  522. sexual immorality.

  523. There's a list

  524. of what we

  525. must do.

  526. There's a sense

  527. of responsibility

  528. there and we're

  529. called to take

  530. responsibility

  531. for our lives

  532. and for the

  533. transformation

  534. that is demanded

  535. by the gospel.

  536. So the question

  537. is,

  538. how seriously

  539. do you take

  540. sin in your

  541. life?

  542. How regularly

  543. do you pray

  544. for things

  545. that you know

  546. don't honour

  547. God in your

  548. life?

  549. How hard

  550. are you trying

  551. to grow

  552. in areas

  553. of godliness?

  554. Because the

  555. call is clear.

  556. Live a life

  557. worthy of

  558. the gospel.

  559. The call

  560. is forceful

  561. in verse 17.

  562. I insist

  563. on it

  564. in the Lord.

  565. But I guess

  566. the question

  567. remains,

  568. what does it

  569. look like

  570. practically

  571. for you

  572. to put off

  573. and put on

  574. this week?

  575. What will it

  576. look like

  577. for you

  578. to live this

  579. out?

  580. Look again

  581. at verse 20

  582. and 21.

  583. You,

  584. however,

  585. did not come

  586. to know

  587. Christ that

  588. way.

  589. Surely

  590. you heard

  591. of him

  592. and were

  593. taught in

  594. him in

  595. accordance

  596. with the

  597. truth that

  598. is in

  599. Jesus.

  600. You did

  601. not come

  602. to know

  603. Christ

  604. that way.

  605. There's

  606. this hint

  607. of looking

  608. back to

  609. what Paul's

  610. been talking

  611. about for

  612. the first

  613. three chapters

  614. of this

  615. book.

  616. We're

  617. looking back

  618. to what's

  619. gone before

  620. to chapter

  621. one.

  622. How did

  623. the Ephesians

  624. come to

  625. know Jesus?

  626. How do

  627. we come

  628. to know

  629. Jesus as

  630. Christians?

  631. By hearing

  632. and learning

  633. the truth

  634. that is in

  635. Jesus.

  636. The truth

  637. of chapter

  638. one that

  639. tells us

  640. that we

  641. were chosen

  642. before the

  643. creation of

  644. the world,

  645. that we

  646. were predestined

  647. and adopted

  648. and forgiven

  649. and all

  650. that when

  651. we're included

  652. by Christ

  653. by faith.

  654. That's what

  655. it looked

  656. like.

  657. That's how

  658. we came

  659. to know

  660. Christ,

  661. is by

  662. faith.

  663. In chapter

  664. two it's

  665. explicit,

  666. it's by

  667. grace.

  668. Our

  669. knowing

  670. Christ has

  671. nothing to

  672. do with

  673. you,

  674. it's by

  675. his grace

  676. and through

  677. faith and

  678. this is from

  679. God.

  680. Paul makes

  681. it really

  682. clear,

  683. just to be

  684. sure you

  685. can't boast

  686. about this

  687. because God

  688. does it

  689. in Christ

  690. and you

  691. participate

  692. in it

  693. by grace

  694. and through

  695. faith.

  696. It's God's

  697. work in

  698. you by

  699. the Holy

  700. Spirit that

  701. opened your

  702. eyes to be

  703. able to

  704. choose what

  705. is right.

  706. It's God's

  707. work that

  708. freed you

  709. from the

  710. ignorance and

  711. the futility

  712. and the

  713. hopelessness.

  714. And in

  715. verse 23,

  716. in amongst

  717. us putting

  718. off and

  719. us putting

  720. on,

  721. we are

  722. to be

  723. made new.

  724. That doesn't

  725. say go make

  726. yourself new,

  727. it means be

  728. made new,

  729. it's something

  730. that God

  731. is doing,

  732. it's his

  733. work and

  734. the only

  735. one who

  736. has the

  737. power to

  738. create is

  739. God through

  740. Jesus.

  741. This

  742. transformation

  743. that is

  744. demanded and

  745. that is

  746. insisted on

  747. is only

  748. possible in

  749. the power

  750. of the

  751. gospel.

  752. It's only

  753. possible in

  754. the power

  755. of the

  756. Holy Spirit

  757. and it's

  758. something that

  759. God alone

  760. can do.

  761. Now you

  762. might be

  763. feeling like

  764. I'm arguing

  765. in two

  766. directions here

  767. but let me

  768. show you.

  769. God in

  770. his infinite

  771. wisdom and

  772. power has

  773. so worked

  774. that he

  775. can say

  776. in the

  777. space of

  778. a couple

  779. of verses

  780. put off

  781. you do

  782. it.

  783. Be made

  784. new,

  785. I'm doing

  786. it and

  787. put on

  788. you do

  789. it.

  790. His

  791. spirit works

  792. in such

  793. a way

  794. that it

  795. empowers

  796. you and

  797. it demands

  798. of you

  799. that you

  800. take

  801. responsibility.

  802. God

  803. says your

  804. life must

  805. be transformed,

  806. must be

  807. different,

  808. must be

  809. recreated and

  810. he gives

  811. you the

  812. power to

  813. do it and

  814. in his

  815. power he

  816. gives you

  817. the

  818. responsibility

  819. to say

  820. I will

  821. wrestle with

  822. sin,

  823. I will

  824. put it

  825. off,

  826. I will

  827. seek

  828. godliness,

  829. I will

  830. put it

  831. on.

  832. The

  833. Christian

  834. life is

  835. this journey

  836. from being

  837. redeemed in

  838. Christ to

  839. the final

  840. redemption when

  841. Christ comes

  842. back and

  843. because of the

  844. cross we are

  845. irreversibly rescued

  846. and forgiven.

  847. We have been

  848. given the new

  849. nature that is

  850. talked about

  851. here.

  852. We now know

  853. Christ,

  854. we are no

  855. longer that

  856. verse 17

  857. to 19

  858. bit,

  859. but you

  860. and I

  861. both know

  862. that so

  863. often we

  864. wander back

  865. into it.

  866. We know

  867. what is

  868. right,

  869. we know

  870. what God

  871. wants but

  872. still we

  873. wander back

  874. into old

  875. habits.

  876. Still we

  877. continue in

  878. patterns of

  879. sin that we

  880. know to be

  881. wrong.

  882. We often

  883. pretend that

  884. we don't

  885. know what's

  886. right,

  887. let alone

  888. have the

  889. willpower to

  890. actually choose

  891. it.

  892. But Paul

  893. says here,

  894. I insist

  895. in the

  896. Lord,

  897. don't settle

  898. for sin.

  899. Don't settle

  900. for not

  901. okay.

  902. Don't become

  903. desensitized but

  904. daily put off

  905. your old

  906. life.

  907. Daily put

  908. on this new

  909. man, this

  910. new self that

  911. has been

  912. created.

  913. Confess

  914. sin.

  915. Pray for

  916. strength to

  917. resist.

  918. Practice

  919. godliness.

  920. Encourage

  921. instead of

  922. tear down.

  923. Share

  924. rather than

  925. steal.

  926. Forgive

  927. rather than

  928. revenge.

  929. Are you

  930. growing to

  931. be more

  932. like Jesus?

  933. Because that

  934. is the new

  935. self that

  936. God has

  937. created in

  938. you.

  939. He is

  940. transforming

  941. you to

  942. be like

  943. Jesus.

  944. What are

  945. you doing

  946. to actually

  947. make that

  948. part of

  949. your agenda?

  950. Do you

  951. have someone

  952. in your

  953. life who

  954. will regularly

  955. challenge you

  956. on areas

  957. that you're

  958. struggling in?

  959. do you

  960. have someone

  961. holding you

  962. accountable in

  963. an area that

  964. you're seeking

  965. to grow in?

  966. Are you

  967. trying to

  968. memorize

  969. scripture that

  970. might shape

  971. your desires

  972. and your

  973. heart?

  974. How

  975. regularly do

  976. you confess

  977. sin in your

  978. life?

  979. Because it

  980. is a daily

  981. struggle to

  982. put off and

  983. to put on.

  984. How we live

  985. can't unsave

  986. us but that

  987. doesn't mean

  988. that it's

  989. not important.

  990. It still

  991. matters.

  992. This is what

  993. it looks like

  994. to be a

  995. Christian.

  996. There is a

  997. transformation

  998. to be more

  999. and more

  1000. like Jesus.

  1001. That's what

  1002. the gospel

  1003. looks like

  1004. when it

  1005. takes root

  1006. in our

  1007. life and

  1008. shapes us.

  1009. But the

  1010. last question

  1011. I have for

  1012. this passage

  1013. is why

  1014. is it

  1015. here?

  1016. I mean

  1017. I get it

  1018. that the

  1019. second half

  1020. of Ephesians

  1021. is practical

  1022. but this

  1023. book is

  1024. about the

  1025. church.

  1026. This book

  1027. is about the

  1028. community of

  1029. God's

  1030. people.

  1031. We just

  1032. learnt in

  1033. the section

  1034. immediately

  1035. before about

  1036. gifts for

  1037. building one

  1038. another up.

  1039. So why does

  1040. he take this

  1041. apparent left

  1042. turn and

  1043. start talking

  1044. about the

  1045. life of the

  1046. individuals?

  1047. Why does

  1048. he suddenly

  1049. slap people

  1050. around about

  1051. their sinfulness

  1052. and their

  1053. failure to

  1054. pursue

  1055. godliness?

  1056. Something that

  1057. I like to do

  1058. and that has

  1059. been significant

  1060. in my

  1061. Christian life

  1062. is having

  1063. older godly

  1064. men as

  1065. mentors.

  1066. And one

  1067. particular guy

  1068. who I won't

  1069. name because

  1070. that would

  1071. make him

  1072. particularly

  1073. uncomfortable,

  1074. I spent

  1075. time with

  1076. regularly over

  1077. the course

  1078. of about

  1079. 18 months

  1080. and this

  1081. man for

  1082. me was

  1083. the godliest

  1084. man I've

  1085. ever met.

  1086. I have

  1087. often referred

  1088. to him

  1089. slightly in

  1090. jest as

  1091. Jesus because

  1092. he's the

  1093. closest thing

  1094. I've seen

  1095. in my

  1096. lifetime.

  1097. he loves

  1098. the scriptures

  1099. in a way

  1100. that I can

  1101. only hope

  1102. to get

  1103. to.

  1104. He has

  1105. boxes and

  1106. boxes and

  1107. boxes of

  1108. memory verse

  1109. cards and

  1110. he knows

  1111. them.

  1112. We would

  1113. meet together

  1114. and he'd be

  1115. carrying around

  1116. this little

  1117. wallet in

  1118. his back

  1119. pocket with

  1120. sort of 10

  1121. 15 memory

  1122. verses that

  1123. he had

  1124. learnt,

  1125. some new

  1126. ones he

  1127. was learning

  1128. and some

  1129. that he

  1130. was revising

  1131. from as

  1132. long as

  1133. 25 years

  1134. ago and

  1135. he'd go

  1136. can you

  1137. test me

  1138. on them?

  1139. He'd hand

  1140. them over

  1141. and he'd

  1142. get every

  1143. one of

  1144. them word

  1145. perfect.

  1146. He'd

  1147. even progressed

  1148. with his

  1149. church through

  1150. the various

  1151. translations of

  1152. the Bible.

  1153. He had

  1154. some of

  1155. his verses

  1156. in King

  1157. James,

  1158. some in

  1159. RSV,

  1160. some in

  1161. NIV and

  1162. he knew

  1163. which ones

  1164. were in

  1165. which because

  1166. they were

  1167. so imprinted

  1168. on his

  1169. mind and

  1170. his life

  1171. that he

  1172. couldn't

  1173. forget them.

  1174. And

  1175. spending time

  1176. with this

  1177. man was a

  1178. significant

  1179. encouragement

  1180. to me.

  1181. We wrestled

  1182. with some

  1183. specific issues,

  1184. we occasionally

  1185. talked about

  1186. specific things

  1187. but the most

  1188. significant

  1189. encouragement

  1190. was just

  1191. watching him

  1192. follow Jesus.

  1193. Watching him

  1194. love his

  1195. wife through

  1196. sickness.

  1197. Watching him

  1198. love his

  1199. kids even

  1200. as some

  1201. of them

  1202. strayed.

  1203. His

  1204. transformed

  1205. life

  1206. spurred me

  1207. on to be

  1208. transformed as

  1209. well.

  1210. His living

  1211. out of the

  1212. gospel,

  1213. his living a

  1214. life worthy

  1215. of the

  1216. gospel pushed

  1217. me to

  1218. maturity,

  1219. pushed me

  1220. to growth.

  1221. This sits

  1222. perfectly in

  1223. this chapter.

  1224. This is

  1225. exactly the

  1226. right place

  1227. because yes

  1228. the church

  1229. is a unit

  1230. but it's a

  1231. unit made

  1232. up of

  1233. people,

  1234. made up

  1235. of individuals

  1236. who are

  1237. living lives,

  1238. made up of

  1239. relationships and

  1240. a life worthy

  1241. of the gospel

  1242. is a life in

  1243. relationship to

  1244. God but it's

  1245. a life in

  1246. relationship to

  1247. those who

  1248. belong to

  1249. God as

  1250. well.

  1251. What we

  1252. need to

  1253. understand is

  1254. your life

  1255. and the

  1256. way you

  1257. live impacts

  1258. me directly

  1259. and indirectly.

  1260. My life

  1261. and the

  1262. way I

  1263. live impacts

  1264. you directly

  1265. and indirectly.

  1266. The

  1267. transformation

  1268. or lack

  1269. of transformation

  1270. has an

  1271. impact on

  1272. you as my

  1273. brothers and

  1274. sisters that

  1275. I'm in

  1276. relationship

  1277. with.

  1278. Look back

  1279. to verse

  1280. 16 just

  1281. before our

  1282. passage.

  1283. Talking about

  1284. the building up

  1285. of the body

  1286. it says,

  1287. from him

  1288. the whole

  1289. body joined

  1290. and held

  1291. together by

  1292. every supporting

  1293. ligament grows

  1294. and builds

  1295. itself up in

  1296. love as

  1297. each part

  1298. does its

  1299. work.

  1300. Part of

  1301. the work

  1302. that each

  1303. part must

  1304. do is what

  1305. follows in

  1306. this passage.

  1307. To be

  1308. equipped to

  1309. do the

  1310. work you

  1311. must be

  1312. being

  1313. transformed.

  1314. You must

  1315. be growing to

  1316. be more like

  1317. Jesus because

  1318. that is what

  1319. the gospel

  1320. does.

  1321. It changes

  1322. us.

  1323. We need to

  1324. take seriously

  1325. the call to

  1326. put off and

  1327. wrestle with

  1328. sin in our

  1329. life and we

  1330. need to take

  1331. seriously the

  1332. call to grow

  1333. in godliness.

  1334. It's not

  1335. enough to

  1336. just put off

  1337. but as we

  1338. are recreated

  1339. our desires,

  1340. our goals,

  1341. our aspirations

  1342. are shaped to

  1343. line up with

  1344. Christ that we

  1345. might be created

  1346. to be like

  1347. God in

  1348. true righteousness

  1349. and holiness.

  1350. As you

  1351. change and

  1352. grow, that

  1353. spurs and

  1354. encourages the

  1355. people around

  1356. you to do

  1357. the same.

  1358. We're not

  1359. all wrestling

  1360. with the same

  1361. sins but

  1362. seeing you

  1363. wrestle with

  1364. sin in your

  1365. life, seeing

  1366. you make the

  1367. decision to

  1368. say that

  1369. God's being

  1370. obedient to

  1371. God and

  1372. his call on

  1373. your life is

  1374. more important

  1375. than your

  1376. sensual desires

  1377. makes me want

  1378. to do the

  1379. same.

  1380. God's grace

  1381. in your life

  1382. gives me joy.

  1383. God's work

  1384. in your life

  1385. gives me a

  1386. vision for

  1387. what he wants

  1388. to do in

  1389. my life and

  1390. the life that

  1391. you are living

  1392. even in

  1393. secret matters

  1394. for the rest

  1395. of us.

  1396. This passage

  1397. is kind of

  1398. heavy but

  1399. it's kind of

  1400. light at the

  1401. same time.

  1402. There are so

  1403. many examples

  1404. of stuff that

  1405. we are all

  1406. bad at.

  1407. Speech,

  1408. sexual impurity,

  1409. anger but

  1410. it's all

  1411. driven by

  1412. the gospel.

  1413. Verse 20

  1414. to 24

  1415. it just

  1416. unpacks the

  1417. gospel.

  1418. You did not

  1419. come to know

  1420. Christ that

  1421. way.

  1422. You heard of

  1423. him and were

  1424. taught in

  1425. him in

  1426. accordance with

  1427. the truth

  1428. that is in

  1429. Jesus.

  1430. You're being

  1431. made new in

  1432. the attitude

  1433. of your mind.

  1434. It's the

  1435. coming to

  1436. know Jesus

  1437. by grace

  1438. and through

  1439. faith that

  1440. frees us to

  1441. live a

  1442. transformed life.

  1443. Frees us

  1444. from futile

  1445. ignorance and

  1446. empowers us to

  1447. choose Jesus.

  1448. So what's it

  1449. going to look

  1450. like for you

  1451. to put on

  1452. and put off

  1453. this week?

  1454. It's going to

  1455. look exactly

  1456. the same as

  1457. it looked the

  1458. first time you

  1459. put off and

  1460. put on.

  1461. That's what you

  1462. did when you

  1463. became a

  1464. Christian.

  1465. You left your

  1466. old life behind

  1467. and you took

  1468. on a new

  1469. one.

  1470. And what did

  1471. it look like

  1472. then?

  1473. It looked like

  1474. you saying,

  1475. God, please

  1476. do this in

  1477. me.

  1478. God, I don't

  1479. deserve it.

  1480. I'm not good

  1481. enough.

  1482. I'm not worthy.

  1483. Please do this

  1484. in me.

  1485. It looks

  1486. like prayer.

  1487. Humble,

  1488. dependent,

  1489. and desperate

  1490. prayer.

  1491. Saying, God,

  1492. change me.

  1493. Pray for your

  1494. holiness.

  1495. Pray for my

  1496. holiness.

  1497. Pray for one

  1498. another so that

  1499. together we can

  1500. live a life

  1501. worthy of the

  1502. gospel.

  1503. so that

  1504. together we

  1505. can be the

  1506. church that

  1507. is pictured

  1508. in these

  1509. passages.

  1510. So that

  1511. together we

  1512. might grow

  1513. up and

  1514. mature into

  1515. the head

  1516. that is

  1517. Christ Jesus.

  1518. Humble,

  1519. dependent,

  1520. desperate

  1521. prayer.

  1522. That's what it

  1523. looks like to

  1524. put off and

  1525. put on.

  1526. Let's pray.

  1527. Pray.

  1528. Pray for

  1529. God.

  1530. Father, we

  1531. want to

  1532. acknowledge that

  1533. there is so

  1534. much in our

  1535. lives that is

  1536. not okay.

  1537. That there is so

  1538. much about the

  1539. way we are

  1540. living that we

  1541. have become

  1542. desensitized to.

  1543. We have become

  1544. comfortable with

  1545. things that are

  1546. disgusting to

  1547. you.

  1548. Father, we

  1549. remember the

  1550. forgiveness and

  1551. the freedom that

  1552. you have won for

  1553. us in Jesus.

  1554. Please remind us

  1555. of the work you

  1556. have done.

  1557. Lift our eyes to

  1558. see the good

  1559. that you would

  1560. have us do in

  1561. our lives.

  1562. Show us the

  1563. sins that you

  1564. would have us

  1565. deal with and

  1566. wrestle with.

  1567. Give us the

  1568. strength to

  1569. overcome them.

  1570. Lord, keep us

  1571. from settling with

  1572. where we are

  1573. now.

  1574. Give us eyes to

  1575. look to Jesus,

  1576. to understand that

  1577. you are transforming

  1578. us from one degree

  1579. of glory to

  1580. another.

  1581. That you are

  1582. constantly by the

  1583. power of your

  1584. spirit cleansing

  1585. us and shaping

  1586. us.

  1587. That we might

  1588. love what you

  1589. love and hate

  1590. what you hate.

  1591. God, use each

  1592. of our lives

  1593. individually to

  1594. be an

  1595. encouragement and

  1596. a joy to one

  1597. another.

  1598. God, please

  1599. transform us

  1600. that our lives

  1601. might reflect your

  1602. gospel, might

  1603. point to Jesus.

  1604. Amen.
