  1. I'm going to lead us in prayer.

  2. Lord Jesus, as we come to your word now,

  3. we pray that you would speak to us by your spirit,

  4. that you would make us attentive to you,

  5. that you would grow us in Christ,

  6. and that we would be men and women who worship you,

  7. who give you the glory in every aspect of our life.

  8. And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. We sell Christianity short

  10. when we separate being rescued by Jesus

  11. from worshipping Jesus,

  12. and what I mean is that we preach,

  13. come to Jesus, receive forgiveness for your every sin and failure.

  14. We preach the rich generosity of God,

  15. but we forget to say, or people don't hear,

  16. join us in treasuring Jesus together.

  17. So people will take a free ticket to heaven.

  18. They want what Christ gives.

  19. They want salvation.

  20. They want salvation.

  21. They want his free gift.

  22. And they don't want him.

  23. God's grace is given so that we can know him

  24. and participate in his glory.

  25. And God's goal in saving people is that we would worship him,

  26. that we would acknowledge him for who he is,

  27. that we would give him his worth-ship,

  28. that we would delight in him,

  29. that we would rejoice to give him glory.

  30. We are saved to worship.

  31. And so my message to you this morning is,

  32. come to Jesus,

  33. be rescued,

  34. start worshipping.

  35. Now you use the word worship,

  36. and it's quite a confused word.

  37. A lot of people use the word

  38. when what they are talking about is singing.

  39. So for some,

  40. singing in church is worship.

  41. And others talk about the service or the liturgy,

  42. and they describe that as worship.

  43. And I think I want to say that they are both

  44. very narrow uses of the word worship.

  45. And they may or may not be worshipped

  46. depending on what is going on in a person's heart.

  47. So you can be sitting here this morning,

  48. and you can be totally disengaged from God,

  49. and you can be totally disengaged from one another,

  50. and if that's the status of where we are,

  51. then we can hardly claim to be worshipping.

  52. Jesus quotes Isaiah 29 in Matthew 15

  53. when he says,

  54. These people honour me with their lips,

  55. but their hearts are far from me.

  56. So it's possible to make all the right noises,

  57. and at the same time to have a heart

  58. which is far from God.

  59. And that is a warning to all,

  60. including me.

  61. I want us to think this morning of worship

  62. as a whole-of-life activity.

  63. It's broad.

  64. It's about giving God his due in our life.

  65. Worship means responding to God on his terms,

  66. not ours.

  67. True worship will be expressed

  68. in loving obedience to Christ.

  69. True worshippers will not ask,

  70. What's in it for me?

  71. They know Christ,

  72. and so they will ask,

  73. What do you want from me?

  74. Lord, I so treasure you.

  75. I trust you with every circumstance of my life.

  76. Lord, take my life

  77. and use it to your glory.

  78. Now I'm continuing our Kingdom of God series.

  79. We're looking at the big picture movement of the Bible.

  80. We've been working to the theme

  81. which Sam's put up in front of us this morning.

  82. There is a king.

  83. There are subjects of the kingdom,

  84. and there is a place where the king reigns.

  85. There's a place where God reigns.

  86. And what we're doing is

  87. we're considering different places in the Bible,

  88. and we were looking at the Bible

  89. in those places over time,

  90. and we're asking over time,

  91. What does it look like to be God's people

  92. in God's place under God's rule?

  93. And today we turn our attention to Moses.

  94. So Exodus 19, it would be great to have it open.

  95. We'll be going to various places this morning.

  96. But in Exodus 19, verse 4,

    Exodus 19:4

  97. God says to the people of Israel,

  98. You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt

  99. and how I carried you on eagles' wings

  100. and brought you to myself.

  101. It summarises a big story.

  102. 700 years before,

  103. God revealed the future to Abraham in Genesis 15.

  104. We read it last week.

  105. God said to Abraham,

  106. He said,

  107. Know for certain that your descendants

  108. will be strangers in a country

  109. not their own,

  110. and they will be enslaved

  111. and mistreated for 400 years,

  112. but in the fourth generation,

  113. they will come back here.

  114. So in Exodus 19,

  115. where we are this morning,

  116. the future that Abraham spoke of

  117. is now past.

  118. And his descendants

  119. had grown to be a great number in Egypt.

  120. And they cried out to the Lord

  121. because they were cruelly oppressed

  122. by a racist government.

  123. And God raises up Moses

  124. to confront the king of Egypt.

  125. And in a series of enormous miracles,

  126. God destroyed the power of the Egyptian king

  127. and all his gods.

  128. And all through the contest

  129. with the Egyptian king,

  130. Moses was asking him

  131. to allow Israel to go

  132. and worship the Lord.

  133. And the king continually refused.

  134. God wouldn't be worshipped

  135. in his kingdom.

  136. No way he would allow them

  137. to shoot through

  138. and go and worship God.

  139. Not going to happen.

  140. It's a huge story.

  141. And in the end,

  142. everyone who trusts God's word

  143. and protects themselves

  144. with the blood of the lamb lives.

  145. And everyone who ignores God's provision

  146. loses their firstborn son.

  147. And so God forces

  148. the Egyptian king's hand.

  149. The Egyptians beg the Israelites

  150. to leave their land.

  151. They send them away with riches.

  152. They plunder the Egyptians.

  153. They escape to the desert.

  154. And God saves the nation

  155. in a stupendous way.

  156. He drives up the Red Sea.

  157. The nation passes through.

  158. And God drowns the armies of Egypt

  159. when they try to follow.

  160. And it's this massive story

  161. in the Bible

  162. of salvation

  163. and of redemption.

  164. God pulls all the levers

  165. to deliver his people.

  166. The entire nation of Israel,

  167. all of Abraham's descendants,

  168. experience this extraordinary rescue

  169. from the most appalling circumstances.

  170. And we see that God

  171. is keeping his promises

  172. to Abraham.

  173. And so when God says

  174. in verse 4, Exodus 19,

  175. you yourselves have seen

  176. what I did to Egypt

  177. and how I carried you

  178. on eagle's wings

  179. and brought you to myself,

  180. it has got a big story behind it.

  181. So Exodus 19 begins

  182. with the nation

  183. just over eight weeks

  184. out of Egypt.

  185. And they're in the desert

  186. in front of the mountain of God,

  187. Mount Sinai.

  188. And God reminds them

  189. that he is the one

  190. who saved them.

  191. And he addresses

  192. his rescued people

  193. and he says to them,

  194. this is verse 5,

  195. And what God does

  196. is he offers these people,

  197. his people,

  198. a privileged role

  199. in his purposes for the world.

  200. And God says,

  201. I will treasure you,

  202. you will be set apart

  203. for my purposes,

  204. you will be

  205. my representatives

  206. to the world.

  207. And God names the terms.

  208. He says,

  209. Obey me fully

  210. and keep my covenant.

  211. And if you do,

  212. you will be the nation

  213. out of all the nations

  214. of the earth

  215. who represent me

  216. to the world.

  217. Now I haven't got time

  218. this morning,

  219. but if we read

  220. the next 12 chapters,

  221. you would read

  222. the 10 commandments

  223. being given

  224. and the laws of God

  225. and the provisions

  226. for priesthood

  227. and you would see

  228. how God wants

  229. to be worshipped

  230. and you would see

  231. that at the conclusion

  232. of God giving

  233. all his instructions,

  234. the people with one voice

  235. say,

  236. everything that the Lord

  237. has said,

  238. we will do.

  239. That's Exodus 24.

  240. Everything that the Lord

  241. has said,

  242. we will do.

  243. It's a great moment

  244. of commitment.

  245. And God invites

  246. this nation of Israel

  247. into this privileged

  248. relationship with him.

  249. They say,

  250. we will do it

  251. and they blow it

  252. first base.

  253. Because you get to

  254. Exodus chapter 32

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  255. and 33

  256. and you come across

  257. a national disaster.

  258. Moses is up on the mountain

  259. meeting with God.

  260. The people convince Aaron

  261. to make them a golden calf

  262. which they begin

  263. to party around

  264. and worship.

  265. The holy people of God,

  266. his treasured possession,

  267. stepped away from privilege.

  268. They went back to being

  269. just like everyone else

  270. and in a short period of time

  271. they just went back

  272. into the world.

  273. And Moses and Joshua

  274. come back down the mountain

  275. to an orgy of worship

  276. as the nation

  277. dances and prances

  278. around this stupid thing

  279. that they have made.

  280. Sometimes we behave

  281. as though there's some kind

  282. of safety in sin.

  283. You know,

  284. we get security

  285. if everybody else

  286. is doing the same thing

  287. it'll be alright.

  288. We drive like the road

  289. rules are for everybody else.

  290. We watch television shows

  291. that a few years ago

  292. wouldn't have even got

  293. an R classification

  294. at the movies.

  295. We go back into the world

  296. we gossip

  297. we call it

  298. informed conversation.

  299. Moses says to Aaron

  300. what on earth is going on?

  301. What have you done?

  302. And he gives this

  303. idiotic explanation.

  304. Oh don't be angry

  305. we threw all the

  306. jewellery into the fire

  307. and look what popped out.

  308. It's a miracle.

  309. Heard the story recently

  310. a 50 something

  311. year old man

  312. somebody my age

  313. left his wife

  314. went overseas

  315. sleeping with a 25

  316. year old woman

  317. to do mission

  318. in an orphanage.

  319. And he justified

  320. himself by calling it

  321. ministry.

  322. We are blind fools

  323. when it comes

  324. to sin.

  325. Moses saw the people

  326. running wild.

  327. He's horrified

  328. that the nation

  329. has turned away

  330. from God

  331. in worship

  332. and he takes

  333. the most drastic

  334. action.

  335. He gets the Levites

  336. to strap the sword

  337. in and on

  338. and go in amongst

  339. the people

  340. and bring it to a halt

  341. and they slaughtered

  342. 3,000 of their own

  343. people that day

  344. and then God

  345. topped it off

  346. with a plague

  347. that killed

  348. a whole lot more.

  349. And Moses

  350. goes to the Lord

  351. and he appeals

  352. for mercy

  353. and forgiveness

  354. for the people

  355. and he places

  356. himself between

  357. them and God

  358. he acts

  359. as a priestly

  360. mediator

  361. and he says

  362. if you won't

  363. forgive their sin

  364. then blot me

  365. out of your book.

  366. And God

  367. replies very firmly

  368. whoever sinned

  369. against me

  370. I will blot

  371. out of my book.

  372. And again

  373. it's a long story

  374. but this is

  375. opportunity lost

  376. because Israel

  377. has blown it

  378. on the starting

  379. blocks.

  380. Right at the

  381. beginning

  382. they lose

  383. the opportunity

  384. to be the

  385. privileged nation.

  386. They will never

  387. now be

  388. the kingdom

  389. of priests

  390. and the holy

  391. nation

  392. the treasured

  393. possession.

  394. And in judgment

  395. God says

  396. go to the land

  397. but I will not

  398. go with you

  399. because you

  400. are a stiff

  401. necked people

  402. and I might

  403. destroy you

  404. on the way.

  405. I was blown

  406. away by this

  407. God does not

  408. change his mind.

  409. they lose

  410. an immense

  411. opportunity

  412. but God

  413. still

  414. shows grace

  415. to the

  416. nation

  417. in allowing

  418. Moses to

  419. mediate

  420. on their

  421. behalf.

  422. And so

  423. Moses rather

  424. than the

  425. nation

  426. becomes the

  427. priest

  428. or the

  429. mediator

  430. who stands

  431. between God

  432. and people.

  433. He is the

  434. man who

  435. turns God's

  436. anger away

  437. from the

  438. nation.

  439. He is the

  440. man to

  441. whom God

  442. says I

  443. am pleased

  444. with you

  445. and I

  446. know you

  447. by name.

  448. Exodus 33.

  449. He is the

  450. man who

  451. knows and

  452. sees the

  453. glory of

  454. God.

  455. No one

  456. else in

  457. the nation

  458. is privileged

  459. to know

  460. God in the

  461. way that

  462. Moses does.

  463. God is

  464. still king

  465. and God's

  466. people are

  467. still invited

  468. to God's

  469. place.

  470. That's for

  471. next week

  472. for Sam's

  473. sake.

  474. God is

  475. king

  476. but now

  477. God rules

  478. them through

  479. a particular

  480. mediator.

  481. A priest

  482. who stands

  483. between God

  484. and people

  485. and they

  486. are no

  487. longer a

  488. nation of

  489. priests

  490. mediating

  491. God to

  492. the world.

  493. And what

  494. is lost

  495. is not

  496. recaptured

  497. in great

  498. glory

  499. until you

  500. get to the

  501. pages of

  502. the New

  503. Testament.

  504. covenant.

  505. So in

  506. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:15

  507. chapter 9

  508. verse 15

  509. it says

  510. for Christ

  511. is the

  512. mediator

  513. of a

  514. new

  515. covenant

  516. that

  517. those

  518. who are

  519. called

  520. may

  521. receive

  522. the

  523. promised

  524. eternal

  525. inheritance

  526. now that

  527. he has

  528. died as a

  529. ransom to

  530. set them

  531. free from

  532. the sins

  533. committed

  534. under the

  535. first

  536. covenant.

  537. Or in

  538. Hebrews

  539. chapter 14

  540. verse 4

  541. we have a

  542. priest who

  543. has gone

  544. through the

  545. heavens.

  546. And so

  547. the glory

  548. of God

  549. is seen

  550. in the

  551. Lord Jesus

  552. in a

  553. fuller way

  554. than was

  555. ever revealed

  556. through

  557. Moses.

  558. Christ

  559. is the

  560. mediator

  561. the priest

  562. who dies

  563. for the

  564. sin of

  565. God's

  566. people.

  567. He is a

  568. propitiation

  569. for our

  570. sin.

  571. He turns

  572. God's

  573. anger

  574. away from

  575. us.

  576. He is

  577. in heaven

  578. he knows

  579. God's

  580. glory and

  581. when Jesus

  582. was here

  583. God his

  584. father declared

  585. this is my

  586. son whom

  587. I love

  588. listen to

  589. him.

  590. And it

  591. gets even

  592. better because

  593. Jesus restores

  594. what was lost

  595. when God's

  596. people faltered

  597. at first

  598. base and

  599. worshipped the

  600. golden calf.

  601. Peter has

  602. a clear

  603. understanding

  604. of what

  605. Jesus has

  606. restored

  607. when he

  608. writes

  609. 1 Peter.

  610. He

  611. effectively

  612. writes to

  613. us sitting

  614. here this

  615. morning and

  616. he says to

  617. us but you

  618. are a chosen

  619. people a

  620. royal priesthood

  621. a holy

  622. nation a

  623. people belonging

  624. to God that

  625. you may declare

  626. the praises of

  627. him who called

  628. you out of

  629. darkness into

  630. his wonderful

  631. light.

  632. Once you

  633. were not a

  634. people but

  635. now you are

  636. the people of

  637. God.

  638. Once you had

  639. not received

  640. mercy but

  641. now you have

  642. received mercy.

  643. mercy.

  644. And so Peter

  645. takes up the

  646. language of

  647. Exodus to

  648. explain the

  649. mission of

  650. Christian believers

  651. to the world

  652. and it is

  653. absolutely

  654. glorious.

  655. The privilege

  656. and the

  657. opportunity offered

  658. in Exodus and

  659. lost has been

  660. recaptured.

  661. Believers are

  662. addressed as a

  663. chosen people,

  664. a royal

  665. priesthood, a

  666. holy nation, a

  667. people who

  668. belong to

  669. God.

  670. And we

  671. are called

  672. those things

  673. because of the

  674. work of

  675. Christ.

  676. So in 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  677. Peter chapter

  678. 1 Peter

  679. says,

  680. Praise be to

  681. the God and

  682. Father of our

  683. Lord Jesus

  684. Christ.

  685. In his

  686. great mercy he

  687. has given us

  688. new birth into

  689. a living hope

  690. through the

  691. resurrection of

  692. Jesus Christ

  693. from the dead.

  694. So salvation

  695. has led to

  696. the opportunity

  697. for privileged

  698. service of the

  699. king.

  700. and we are

  701. able to enter

  702. into a life of

  703. worship.

  704. And we are

  705. now able to

  706. do God's

  707. works which he

  708. prepared in

  709. advance for us

  710. to do.

  711. And 1

  712. Peter says that

  713. we have been

  714. called to a

  715. very specific

  716. role.

  717. To declare

  718. the praises of

  719. him who called

  720. you out of

  721. darkness into

  722. his wonderful

  723. light.

  724. 1 Peter chapter

    1 Peter 2:9

  725. 2 verse 9.

  726. God has

  727. saved us for

  728. a purpose.

  729. To declare

  730. the praises,

  731. to declare

  732. his praises.

  733. God has.

  734. And Peter says

  735. that to a

  736. bunch of

  737. believers who

  738. don't seem

  739. very significant

  740. in terms of

  741. power and

  742. worldly influence.

  743. He calls them

  744. strangers in the

  745. world, he says

  746. they're scattered,

  747. and yet he says

  748. to them even

  749. though everybody

  750. might despise you

  751. for what you

  752. think and for

  753. what you believe,

  754. you go and live

  755. such good lives

  756. among the pagans

  757. that though they

  758. accuse you of

  759. doing wrong,

  760. they may see

  761. your good deeds

  762. on the day of

  763. Christ Jesus.

  764. Who we are

  765. in the world

  766. is not what

  767. makes us

  768. significant in

  769. God's economy.

  770. On the day of

  771. Christ Jesus,

  772. your ATAR,

  773. your position in

  774. the business

  775. world, the

  776. properties and

  777. wealth that you

  778. possess,

  779. representing

  780. Australia at

  781. sport or

  782. whatever it is,

  783. will not matter.

  784. God has saved

  785. us to give

  786. him the glory

  787. and not to

  788. take his glory

  789. to ourselves.

  790. We are saved

  791. to worship.

  792. And if you are

  793. a Christian believer,

  794. you have a story

  795. to tell about God

  796. who brought you

  797. from darkness

  798. to light.

  799. And the journey

  800. for all of us

  801. might be a little

  802. bit different.

  803. Some of us have

  804. been nurtured in

  805. the faith in

  806. Christian families

  807. and maybe,

  808. maybe not,

  809. there have been

  810. places along the

  811. way where our

  812. family's faith has

  813. become our own.

  814. And others of

  815. us know very

  816. clear moments of

  817. conversion, a

  818. moment in time

  819. when you understood

  820. Christ and trusted

  821. him for the first

  822. time.

  823. You've got a story

  824. to tell.

  825. And even if you

  826. aren't sure what

  827. your story is,

  828. we have his story.

  829. We have the

  830. gospel.

  831. And God has

  832. provided a perfect

  833. mediator, a perfect

  834. priest.

  835. He has stood in

  836. our place.

  837. He has died for

  838. our sins.

  839. And we have God's

  840. great news about

  841. the Lord Jesus

  842. Christ.

  843. We have a

  844. message that God

  845. wants us to

  846. declare to his

  847. world.

  848. And it's a

  849. message which

  850. people need even

  851. if they don't

  852. think they do.

  853. What you see

  854. here is that God

  855. speaks to the

  856. world through

  857. chosen mediators,

  858. his people.

  859. people.

  860. He does it through

  861. the church.

  862. And I don't

  863. mean the church

  864. as an institution.

  865. I mean the

  866. people of God

  867. scattered throughout

  868. the world who

  869. meet in many

  870. different places

  871. and circumstances

  872. around the word

  873. of God.

  874. The community

  875. groups that I'm

  876. in at the

  877. moment are

  878. reading a book

  879. called A

  880. Meal with

  881. Jesus.

  882. I've mentioned

  883. it a few

  884. times over the

  885. last few

  886. weeks.

  887. It's a

  888. delightful little

  889. book that

  890. looks at the

  891. significance of

  892. food and meals

  893. in Luke's

  894. gospel.

  895. And it

  896. describes Jesus

  897. in a very

  898. ordinary way as

  899. the son of

  900. man who came

  901. eating and

  902. drinking.

  903. And the

  904. religious people

  905. called him a

  906. drunkard and a

  907. glutton.

  908. But it's in

  909. Luke's gospel,

  910. it's during

  911. meals that

  912. Jesus does

  913. some of his

  914. most significant

  915. teaching,

  916. sometimes

  917. offending,

  918. sometimes

  919. comforting.

  920. But he does

  921. it in the

  922. ordinary.

  923. And I think

  924. much of

  925. ministry happens

  926. in the

  927. ordinary moments

  928. of life.

  929. Opportunities

  930. to declare

  931. God's praise

  932. come in very

  933. ordinary settings

  934. around a

  935. meal.

  936. At the

  937. school gate,

  938. while we're

  939. watching our

  940. kids play

  941. sport, over

  942. lunch in the

  943. workplace, one

  944. of you told me

  945. a lovely story

  946. the other day

  947. of wanting to

  948. be a friend

  949. and to hold

  950. out a helping

  951. hand.

  952. And it led

  953. to a conversation

  954. where the

  955. person expressed

  956. interest in

  957. coming to

  958. church.

  959. Brian

  960. Tung did

  961. some great

  962. things at the

  963. end of last

  964. year with the

  965. NTE mission.

  966. The whole

  967. team surveyed

  968. people down

  969. at the

  970. Mandarin

  971. Centre down

  972. in Chatswood

  973. and their

  974. purpose wasn't

  975. to do a

  976. dump and

  977. declare every

  978. purpose of

  979. God in

  980. every conversation.

  981. I think

  982. Brian described

  983. it as a

  984. date, a

  985. point of

  986. contact and

  987. hoping maybe

  988. to create an

  989. opportunity for

  990. a second

  991. date and a

  992. second opportunity.

  993. I have a

  994. friend who

  995. describes these

  996. sort of

  997. conversations like

  998. fishing.

  999. He said you

  1000. need a well

  1001. presented bait

  1002. and you need

  1003. patience while

  1004. you wait for

  1005. the fish

  1006. themselves to

  1007. show interest

  1008. in what you've

  1009. got to offer.

  1010. I like to

  1011. talk about

  1012. having winsome

  1013. conversations with

  1014. people, not

  1015. being too

  1016. pushy, listening

  1017. well, sharing

  1018. yourself, being

  1019. real, not

  1020. looking to

  1021. dump your

  1022. truck on

  1023. top of

  1024. people.

  1025. Romans 12

  1026. 1 says

  1027. therefore in

  1028. view of

  1029. God's mercy

  1030. present your

  1031. bodies as a

  1032. living sacrifice

  1033. to God

  1034. which is your

  1035. spiritual act

  1036. of worship.

  1037. Salvation

  1038. leads to

  1039. worship

  1040. and worship

  1041. is whole of

  1042. life service

  1043. of the Lord

  1044. Jesus Christ.

  1045. In

  1046. Exodus God

  1047. moved his

  1048. mighty arm to

  1049. save his

  1050. people in a

  1051. marvellous way.

  1052. They were

  1053. called to

  1054. worship him.

  1055. They blew it

  1056. at first base.

  1057. They lost the

  1058. privilege opportunity

  1059. to be God's

  1060. priests, God's

  1061. mediators to

  1062. the world.

  1063. And in

  1064. Jesus Christ we

  1065. have been offered

  1066. privilege again.

  1067. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1068. chapter 2 says

  1069. you are a

  1070. chosen people,

  1071. a royal

  1072. priesthood,

  1073. a holy

  1074. nation, a

  1075. people belonging

  1076. to God

  1077. that you may

  1078. declare the

  1079. praises of

  1080. him who

  1081. called you

  1082. out of

  1083. darkness

  1084. into his

  1085. wonderful

  1086. light.

  1087. So go into

  1088. the ordinary

  1089. and be the

  1090. extraordinary

  1091. people that we

  1092. have become in

  1093. Christ.

  1094. Christ.

  1095. So my

  1096. message to you

  1097. this morning,

  1098. come to

  1099. Jesus, be

  1100. rescued, start

  1101. worshipping, open

  1102. our mouths, use

  1103. our resources, open

  1104. our homes, open

  1105. our hearts to

  1106. people living in

  1107. darkness that we

  1108. might declare the

  1109. praises of him who

  1110. called us out of

  1111. darkness into his

  1112. wonderful light.

  1113. Amen.
