  1. Colossians 1, 15 to 23.

  2. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

  3. For by him all things are created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

  4. whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities.

  5. All things were created by him and for him.

  6. He is before all things and in him all things hold together.

  7. And he is the head of the body, the church.

  8. He is the beginning and the firstborn from among dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

  9. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him and through him to reconcile to himself all things,

  10. whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood shed on the cross.

  11. Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

  12. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you wholly in his sight,

  13. without blemish and free from accusation.

  14. If you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held in the gospel,

  15. this is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,

  16. and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

  17. Well, good evening to you all.

  18. And good evening to you all.

  19. Oh, lovely. Thank you.

  20. Because it would be an exceptionally lonely place to be up here and nobody out there.

  21. Let's look at God's word here.

  22. Now, in the 1970s, Andrew Richardson, a Liverpool postal worker,

  23. declared his semi-detached flat to be the independent nation of Granbya.

  24. After a while, however, Richardson lost interest and the department reverted back to England by default.

  25. In 1964, Leicester, I think that's how you say that name.

  26. How do I say it?

  27. Leicester.

  28. Yes. Okay.

  29. Hemingway, the little brother of author Ernest Hemingway,

  30. built an eight-by-30-foot floating bamboo platform,

  31. seven miles off the coast of Jamaica,

  32. anchoring it to the ocean floor with a Ford engine block.

  33. I can stand on the platform, walk around on it and salute the flag,

  34. all of which I do periodically, he told the reporters.

  35. There are no taxes here,

  36. because taxes are for people not smart enough to start their own countries.

  37. In time, part of his country was destroyed by fishermen in search of scrap wood,

  38. and the rest sank in a storm.

  39. In 1969, in Australia, in Western Australia,

  40. the wheat quota board limited the amount of wheat he could grow,

  41. so Leonard George Casely took his 18,500-acre farm

  42. and seceded from Australia to form his own country.

  43. The Principality of Hutt River, it was called.

  44. He designed his own national flag and motto,

  45. printed his own money and set up his own parliament.

  46. Australia refused to recognise his sovereignty,

  47. so in 1977, he declared war.

  48. Nothing came of it.

  49. What a surprise.

  50. He backed down two days later and re-established diplomatic relations.

  51. Casely claims he pays no Australian taxes,

  52. but he admits he makes payments to the Australian government

  53. as an international courtesy.

  54. You can still actually visit that place.

  55. Tourism.

  56. People go to it.

  57. Kingdoms come and kingdoms go.

  58. Even the most mighty of nations don't last forever,

  59. except for the kingdom of God

  60. that we have been talking about over the last few weeks.

  61. In this series, we've been saying that the kingdom of God

  62. is God's people in God's place under God's rule.

  63. And today, we focus on Jesus being the fulfilment

  64. of all of what the Old Testament has been saying to us.

  65. We read in Matthew 1,

  66. and some might wonder at the importance of reading it,

  67. but you and I both know that when we look at our own family tree,

  68. there are stories that go along with absolutely every person in that tree.

  69. Some may be more colourful than others,

  70. but there is something important with every entry,

  71. as is with the Matthew 1.

  72. The genealogy we were looking at today in Matthew

  73. is very important for us to understand the kingdom of God.

  74. It's important because we see Jesus' lineage was no accident.

  75. He was born to fulfil a certain plan

  76. that we have been reading and hearing about over these last weeks.

  77. It's a specific plan in a specific time,

  78. in a specific place from a specific line of people.

  79. It had to be this way because God had promised

  80. that Jesus would be born a ruler,

  81. not just an ordinary ruler,

  82. but King of kings, Lord of lords.

  83. God planned this ruler through promise.

  84. God not only makes his promises,

  85. but he's faithful and he keeps his promises.

  86. And so we've seen over the weeks

  87. that God had a couple of specific promises

  88. that stand out above the rest.

  89. Promises made to Abraham and promises made to David.

  90. Covenants, we call them.

  91. Now Matthew lists them in the first verse.

  92. He lists it with Jesus is the son of David first

  93. before he says son of Abraham.

  94. Matthew does that because his purpose in writing his gospel

  95. was to show how Jesus is the Messiah,

  96. that he's the king of the Jews.

  97. And that's what the Davidic covenant was all about.

  98. It was about establishing the throne.

  99. In Chronicles chapter 1 verse 17,

  100. 1 Chronicles chapter 17,

    1 Chronicles 17 chapter mention

  101. which if you want to look up, but I will read.

  102. When your days are over and you go to be with your fathers,

  103. I will raise up your offspring to succeed you.

  104. One of your own sons,

  105. and I will establish his kingdom.

  106. He is the one who will build a house for me,

  107. and I will establish his throne forever.

  108. I will be his father and he will be my son.

  109. I will never take my love away from him

  110. as I took away from your predecessor.

  111. I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever.

  112. His throne will be established forever.

  113. God is reaffirming his promise of the land to Israel,

  114. and he promises David an eternal throne.

  115. By saying that Jesus is the son of David,

  116. Matthew is saying that he is the fulfillment

  117. of God's prophecy to David.

  118. Jesus is the one whose throne is established forevermore.

  119. He is the seed of David that God would raise up

  120. and establish his kingdom.

  121. Now, Jesus was the literal fulfillment

  122. of God's promise to David,

  123. and Jesus also fulfilled the Abrahamic covenant,

  124. the promise made to Abraham.

  125. Not only did Jesus fulfill God's promise for a throne,

  126. but he also fulfilled God's promise for a seed.

  127. Remember, we have read in earlier weeks

  128. in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  129. God told Abraham that through his lineage,

  130. all the earth would be blessed.

  131. It didn't happen through Isaac or Jacob.

  132. It didn't happen through Judah, David or Solomon.

  133. The blessing happened through Jesus.

  134. Galatians chapter 3 says,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  135. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law

  136. by becoming a curse for us.

  137. For it is written,

  138. cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.

  139. He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham

  140. might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,

  141. so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

  142. Not only did God plan for a ruler through promise,

  143. he planned for a ruler through people.

  144. Look at the list we read earlier.

  145. As I look at the list in Matthew 1,

  146. the first thing I notice is that it isn't a list

  147. that I would have chosen.

  148. If I was to choose a lineage for the Son of God,

  149. God in the flesh,

  150. I would have chosen better people than these ones,

  151. if I knew them.

  152. Abraham was a liar.

  153. Isaac learned from his dad

  154. and was a liar as well.

  155. Jacob was a cheat and a swindler.

  156. While Joseph was resisting temptation

  157. and living a blessed and holy life in Egypt,

  158. Judah was spending time with his daughter-in-law, Tamar,

  159. who was disguised as a prostitute

  160. and he got her pregnant,

  161. so their son was illegitimate.

  162. Do you see a pattern sort of happening here?

  163. Of course not all of them were bad.

  164. Boaz was honourable,

  165. although he did marry a Moabite woman

  166. that was forbidden for him to marry.

  167. Some of the kings were good.

  168. David was a man after God's own heart,

  169. but he was a murderer

  170. and he had committed adultery with Bathsheba,

  171. who, by the way, is also in Jesus' lineage.

  172. No, what this list shows is God's goodness and God's mercy.

  173. Aren't you glad that God does not choose the best and the brightest?

  174. He chooses to work through the weak things of this world

  175. that he might be shown to be strong.

  176. In God's plan for a ruler through people,

  177. he used the royal line of David

  178. to give Jesus legal claim to the throne.

  179. So we have God's rule in Jesus.

  180. Well, what about God's place?

  181. Last week, Steve preached about the prophet Ezekiel

  182. and the promise from God.

  183. All of what he knew about God

  184. was attached to the promised land,

  185. Israel, Jerusalem and the temple.

  186. The temple was the centre of God's activity with his people.

  187. The temple was God's dwelling place.

  188. And yet it was no more.

  189. It was destroyed.

  190. But without the land, Jerusalem and a temple,

  191. what is left?

  192. Steve had asked,

  193. has God abandoned his people?

  194. Has his promises to Abraham and David failed?

  195. What does it now mean to be the people of God?

  196. Well, we've already seen that God has fulfilled his promise

  197. through Abraham and David.

  198. And now in the New Testament,

  199. we can see that the new temple

  200. has already come into existence

  201. for it is none other than Jesus Christ himself.

  202. John describes it in John 1, 14.

  203. The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

  204. That literal translation is,

  205. he tabernacled among us.

  206. In other words,

  207. John saw Jesus as resembling the tabernacle in the wilderness.

  208. We don't need a temple anymore

  209. because Jesus himself is dwelling with us.

  210. Jesus is God dwelling with us.

  211. We continue to see that God's place is directly linked to Jesus

  212. in the words of the kingdom.

  213. Look at Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  214. the first couple of verses,

  215. where John is talking about Jesus.

  216. In those days,

  217. John the Baptist came,

  218. preaching in the desert of Judea

  219. and saying,

  220. repent for the kingdom of heaven is near.

  221. Mark 1, verses 14 and 15 say,

    Mark 1:14

  222. after John was put into prison,

  223. Jesus went into Galilee,

  224. proclaiming the good news of God.

  225. The kingdom of God is near.

  226. Repent and believe the good news.

  227. Mark 11,

  228. as part of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem,

  229. we hear the people shout,

  230. Hosanna,

  231. blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  232. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David.

  233. And in Colossians 1, 13,

  234. we read,

  235. for he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness

  236. and brought us into the kingdom of the son he loves,

  237. in whom we have redemption,

  238. the forgiveness of sins.

  239. The kingdom we see in scripture

  240. is also referred to as a mustard seed,

  241. a fine pearl.

  242. Steve mentioned before,

  243. a treasure hidden in a field,

  244. a net of fish.

  245. All of them are directly connected to Jesus.

  246. For it is Jesus who is the treasure.

  247. And without the treasure,

  248. we are lost for all eternity.

  249. Hence,

  250. we have,

  251. as our statement for this church,

  252. that we want to treasure Jesus.

  253. Without Jesus,

  254. we have nothing.

  255. What these verses show

  256. is that Jesus is the head of the new race.

  257. All who are united with him

  258. are members of that race.

  259. That is,

  260. whoever is in Christ

  261. is a new creation

  262. and Christ is the head.

  263. So we have a people of God,

  264. those who are in Christ.

  265. And we have one who is under God's rule,

  266. that is Jesus Christ.

  267. So how is Jesus the ruler?

  268. Let's read Colossians,

  269. that first part of the Colossians reading again.

  270. He is the image of the invisible God,

  271. the firstborn over all creation.

  272. For by him,

  273. all things were created,

  274. things in heaven and on earth,

  275. visible and invisible,

  276. whether thrones or powers

  277. or rulers or authorities,

  278. all things were created

  279. by him and for him.

  280. He is before all things

  281. and in him,

  282. all things hold together.

  283. And he is the head of the body,

  284. the church.

  285. He is the beginning

  286. and the firstborn

  287. from among the dead

  288. so that in everything,

  289. he might have the supremacy.

  290. For God was pleased

  291. to have all his fullness

  292. dwell in him

  293. and through him

  294. to reconcile himself

  295. all things,

  296. whether things on earth

  297. or things in heaven,

  298. by making peace

  299. through his blood

  300. shed on the cross.

  301. The gospel is saying,

  302. he, sorry,

  303. he is the one

  304. who brings salvation

  305. to humankind.

  306. Everything is in Jesus.

  307. He holds it all together.

  308. It is in God's fullness

  309. in him,

  310. he then brings peace.

  311. Following on in verse 21,

  312. once you were alienated

  313. from God

  314. and were enemies

  315. in your minds

  316. because of your evil behaviour,

  317. but now he has reconciled you

  318. by Christ's physical body

  319. through death

  320. to present you

  321. wholly in his sight

  322. without blemish

  323. and free from accusation.

  324. If you continue

  325. in your faith

  326. established and firm,

  327. not moved

  328. from the hope

  329. held out in the gospel.

  330. This is the gospel

  331. that you have heard

  332. that has been proclaimed

  333. to every creature

  334. under heaven

  335. and of which I,

  336. Paul,

  337. have become a servant.

  338. The gospel is saying

  339. that what man

  340. cannot do for salvation,

  341. this God

  342. has done

  343. on our behalf

  344. in the person

  345. of Jesus Christ.

  346. We know from history

  347. that man

  348. has failed

  349. time and time

  350. and time again

  351. to present a life

  352. to God

  353. that is perfect

  354. and acceptable.

  355. And here,

  356. we see Jesus

  357. do this for us.

  358. He's the one

  359. who is perfect

  360. and acceptable

  361. on our behalf.

  362. It is Jesus

  363. who has perfectly

  364. lived out

  365. the holy law

  366. of God

  367. and its penalty

  368. was perfectly

  369. paid for us

  370. in Jesus.

  371. It is the living

  372. and the dying

  373. of Christ

  374. for us

  375. that is the basis

  376. of our acceptance

  377. with God.

  378. It is Jesus Christ

  379. who rules.

  380. But did you pick up

  381. that small word

  382. if

  383. in the verses

  384. in Colossians?

  385. It is Christ

  386. who will present us

  387. without blemish

  388. and free from accusation

  389. to almighty God

  390. if.

  391. If what?

  392. If you continue

  393. in your faith

  394. established

  395. and firm

  396. not moved

  397. from the hope

  398. held out

  399. in the gospel.

  400. Well,

  401. what does that

  402. look like?

  403. It is a life

  404. trusting

  405. a sovereign God.

  406. Looking at our

  407. core values

  408. here at church

  409. it's a life

  410. of Christ

  411. centred

  412. Bible

  413. saturation.

  414. Why do we

  415. keep harping

  416. on about

  417. this Christ

  418. centred

  419. Bible

  420. saturation?

  421. Because it is

  422. there that

  423. your life

  424. will be

  425. changed.

  426. It is there

  427. that we are

  428. challenged

  429. to live

  430. a life

  431. of servanthood.

  432. It is

  433. in

  434. Christ

  435. centred

  436. Bible

  437. saturation

  438. that we

  439. live a life

  440. that is

  441. seeking

  442. God's

  443. wisdom

  444. and God's

  445. discernment.

  446. It's where

  447. the result

  448. is that

  449. we are

  450. challenged

  451. to live

  452. a life

  453. seeking

  454. for God

  455. to change

  456. us

  457. to be

  458. more like

  459. Jesus.

  460. To live

  461. a life

  462. of Christ

  463. centred

  464. Bible

  465. saturation

  466. means a

  467. life

  468. of humble

  469. authenticity.

  470. We don't

  471. live

  472. differently

  473. with different

  474. people.

  475. We are

  476. authentic

  477. people of

  478. God

  479. in every

  480. moment

  481. of every

  482. day.

  483. It is

  484. a life

  485. where the

  486. needs

  487. of others

  488. are far

  489. more

  490. important

  491. to us

  492. than our

  493. own

  494. needs.

  495. It's a

  496. life where

  497. we're seeking

  498. to know

  499. God in a

  500. closer and

  501. more personal

  502. way every

  503. day of

  504. our lives.

  505. That we

  506. are never

  507. ever satisfied

  508. with just

  509. head knowledge

  510. life.

  511. It's a

  512. life of

  513. contentment

  514. in Jesus

  515. and Jesus

  516. alone.

  517. It's a life

  518. that we do

  519. not get if we

  520. don't get our

  521. own way in

  522. family or

  523. at our

  524. uni or

  525. our

  526. workplace or

  527. with our

  528. friends or

  529. we don't get

  530. our own way

  531. in our

  532. ministry or

  533. we don't get

  534. our own way

  535. in this

  536. church.

  537. That we

  538. can humbly

  539. seek to do

  540. what is best

  541. for other

  542. people.

  543. That we

  544. are content

  545. because we

  546. know Jesus.

  547. I would

  548. actually

  549. challenge you

  550. to consider

  551. what is it

  552. that you

  553. and God

  554. are working

  555. on at this

  556. moment in

  557. time.

  558. What part

  559. of your

  560. character are

  561. you working

  562. on with

  563. God?

  564. Because if

  565. you are not

  566. working on

  567. anything at

  568. all, I

  569. can actually

  570. say to

  571. you, you

  572. might be

  573. stalling in

  574. your Christian

  575. faith.

  576. We need

  577. to be

  578. Christ

  579. centred,

  580. Bible

  581. saturated

  582. Christians and

  583. doing that,

  584. God is going

  585. to be knocking

  586. off the

  587. rough edges

  588. of us.

  589. And so

  590. there needs

  591. to always

  592. be something

  593. that you

  594. are working

  595. with.

  596. You and

  597. God trying

  598. to work

  599. through and

  600. are you

  601. asking the

  602. Lord to

  603. help you

  604. to be more

  605. prayerful?

  606. Are you

  607. asking the

  608. Lord to

  609. deal with

  610. your anger?

  611. Are you

  612. asking the

  613. Lord to

  614. help you

  615. to be

  616. more

  617. sensitive

  618. to another

  619. person's

  620. needs?

  621. What is

  622. it that

  623. you and

  624. God are

  625. working on

  626. at this

  627. moment in

  628. time?

  629. That's a

  630. question my

  631. mentor would

  632. be asking me

  633. each time she

  634. sees me.

  635. What is it

  636. that you and

  637. God are

  638. working on?

  639. And that's a

  640. question we

  641. should be able

  642. to ask each

  643. other at

  644. any time.

  645. What is it

  646. that you and

  647. God are

  648. working on

  649. at this

  650. moment for

  651. you to

  652. build godly

  653. character or

  654. for God to

  655. be building

  656. godly

  657. character?

  658. Next week

  659. we look at

  660. Jesus and

  661. the great

  662. fulfilment of

  663. Jesus and

  664. where Jesus

  665. takes us.

  666. And as

  667. Jesus changes

  668. our life through

  669. the Holy Spirit

  670. we actually have

  671. the great hope

  672. of glory,

  673. the great hope

  674. of heaven.

  675. But don't be

  676. tricked into

  677. thinking it's

  678. all about what

  679. Jesus has done

  680. in us.

  681. It's about what

  682. God has done

  683. for us in

  684. Jesus.

  685. That is the

  686. gospel.

  687. And we get the

  688. blessing of being

  689. changed to be

  690. Christ-like as we

  691. go along.

  692. Earlier on

  693. Steve actually

  694. mentioned movies

  695. and he mentions

  696. that he sees

  697. the end and

  698. speaks it

  699. forth.

  700. And Nat

  701. is the one

  702. who still

  703. cries even

  704. though she

  705. knows the

  706. end.

  707. But in actual

  708. fact for me

  709. I actually can

  710. see movies over

  711. and over and

  712. over again and

  713. I forget what

  714. the ending is.

  715. My son Jason

  716. who's not here

  717. but Jason

  718. says I get

  719. the best value

  720. out of hiring

  721. movies than

  722. any person

  723. because I

  724. can look at

  725. it fresh all

  726. the time and

  727. it's new.

  728. I never

  729. sort of,

  730. oh that's a

  731. surprise.

  732. I can do it

  733. with books

  734. also.

  735. Vander will

  736. tell me,

  737. I'm not sure,

  738. halfway through

  739. the book I

  740. think I've read

  741. it.

  742. And he'll say

  743. yes you have.

  744. You know sort

  745. of.

  746. But that's a

  747. problem if you

  748. do that with

  749. Jesus.

  750. You see

  751. because I

  752. can forget

  753. the goodness

  754. and the

  755. greatness of

  756. Jesus.

  757. You might be

  758. somebody who

  759. sits in

  760. Steve's camp

  761. or Nat's

  762. camp or in

  763. my camp which

  764. is another one

  765. altogether.

  766. But don't be

  767. complacent with

  768. Jesus.

  769. Yes Jesus is

  770. the answer.

  771. We all know

  772. that from Sunday

  773. school and from

  774. scripture.

  775. Jesus is the

  776. answer and you

  777. sort of nearly

  778. there most of

  779. the time.

  780. But don't be

  781. complacent with

  782. Jesus.

  783. Jesus needs to

  784. be changing

  785. our lives.

  786. I know that

  787. most of us have

  788. heard this

  789. message over and

  790. over again or

  791. one similar.

  792. But you need

  793. to ask how

  794. does this

  795. message consistently

  796. challenge the

  797. way I think and

  798. live out life.

  799. None of us in

  800. this building

  801. absolutely none

  802. of us have

  803. finished the

  804. race that we

  805. are in.

  806. So no one is

  807. sitting on the

  808. side.

  809. We are all in

  810. a race together.

  811. I want you to

  812. continue to run

  813. the race and to

  814. run it faithfully

  815. with Jesus.

  816. I want you to

  817. know that the

  818. kingdom of God

  819. is here now but

  820. is also your goal

  821. later.

  822. that way we

  823. can be God's

  824. people in God's

  825. place under God's

  826. rule.

  827. thanks for saying

  828. that

  829. I can see you

  830. as

  831. people in

  832. with

  833. as

  834. people in
