  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. If you were here on Friday,

  3. I encouraged you to look to Jesus on the cross

  4. and believe for forgiveness,

  5. for reconciliation with God.

  6. This morning, I invite you to not just look,

  7. but to see the Lord for eternal life,

  8. for meaning, for life, for hope.

  9. So for that to happen,

  10. we need to pray that God would help us

  11. to see what we cannot see with our own eyes,

  12. that he might give us eyes

  13. so that we might see the glory of the risen Lord.

  14. Let's pray.

  15. Father, I pray that as we come to your word this morning,

  16. we pray that it would come alive,

  17. just as alive as Jesus is now and reigning.

  18. So we need your spirit to come to help us

  19. to see what we cannot see with human eyes,

  20. lest we walk out of here like Thomas,

  21. doubting, questioning, refusing to believe.

  22. So help us in our unbelief

  23. so that we might see the risen Lord, we pray,

  24. for your glory.

  25. Amen.

  26. There are two questions for us here on Easter Sunday,

  27. the truth question and the meaning question.

  28. Whenever you talk about the resurrection of Jesus,

  29. the truth question and the meaning question are intertwined.

  30. The truth question is, did it really happen?

  31. The meaning question is, who cares?

  32. What's the point?

  33. There are people who reject Christianity

  34. because they don't think it's true.

  35. Jesus didn't die because dead people don't die and that's that.

  36. That's the truth question.

  37. But there are other people who reject Christianity,

  38. not because they are convinced it's not true,

  39. but because they can't see why it would make any difference

  40. in their life if it were true.

  41. In other words, the meaning of it is insignificant

  42. or irrelevant for what really concerns them in life.

  43. And to answer a little bit of that,

  44. I have written a blurb on the front of your bulletin.

  45. I encourage you to read it at some point

  46. about just very briefly five things

  47. that the resurrection does for us.

  48. Forty years ago, there was an assumption

  49. that there are fixed laws

  50. that make the world understandable

  51. and scientifically manageable.

  52. These laws, however, did not allow for the truth

  53. of the claim that someone could rise from the dead

  54. and live forever.

  55. The world at that time,

  56. with its scientific understanding of natural laws,

  57. did not allow for resurrections,

  58. so unbelief was often connected

  59. to that kind of assumption,

  60. to scientific facts.

  61. Today, there's a different assumption behind unbelief.

  62. Today, the assumption is

  63. that there is a personal law inside of me,

  64. not natural fixed laws,

  65. but personal laws inside of me.

  66. It's a law that says,

  67. I don't have to adapt my life

  68. to anything that I don't find helpful to be.

  69. That is, truth for me is what I find acceptable

  70. and what I find helpful for my life.

  71. So in the end,

  72. it doesn't matter whether Jesus rose from the dead

  73. because whether he did or whether he didn't,

  74. my issue is,

  75. I don't care.

  76. And if I don't care,

  77. then I will just view the resurrection of Jesus

  78. in the same way that I would view UFOs.

  79. It may, may not exist.

  80. Don't care.

  81. It doesn't bother me

  82. unless it's Independence Day

  83. and one is right on top of me.

  84. Some of us think that way

  85. without even knowing that's the way we think.

  86. We have just simply absorbed the culture in which we live.

  87. I think both questions are important to address

  88. at the same time.

  89. As the world has made rapid advancement

  90. in scientific understanding,

  91. there has been

  92. a chronological

  93. snobbery

  94. that assumes

  95. any conclusions made in previous centuries

  96. were just based on ignorance.

  97. That truth is in my century

  98. or in my era,

  99. in my time

  100. and those other people

  101. were just ignorant,

  102. gallible,

  103. foolish people.

  104. So the people around

  105. when Jesus rose from the dead

  106. were just that.

  107. They were gullible

  108. and ignorant

  109. and foolish.

  110. It's a bit odd

  111. because when you look

  112. at the first response

  113. to the empty tomb,

  114. we don't find gullibility.

  115. Have a look at it there.

  116. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  117. It was just read out to us.

  118. If you haven't got your Bibles open,

  119. please open them.

  120. I want you to see these words.

  121. John 20 verse 1.

    John 20:1

  122. Early on the first day of the week,

  123. while it was still dark,

  124. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb

  125. and saw

  126. that the stone

  127. had been removed

  128. from the entrance.

  129. So she came running

  130. to Simon Peter

  131. and the other disciples,

  132. the one Jesus loved,

  133. and said,

  134. they have taken the Lord

  135. out of the tomb

  136. and we don't know

  137. where they have put him.

  138. The very first response

  139. to the resurrection of Jesus

  140. is there must be

  141. another explanation.

  142. Mary,

  143. one of the disciples of Jesus,

  144. did not believe

  145. in the resurrection.

  146. Her first assumption was

  147. that the body

  148. had been moved.

  149. We also see

  150. in verse 13,

  151. she was working

  152. on the assumption

  153. that the Jewish leaders

  154. had come

  155. and taken the body

  156. of Jesus

  157. and disposed of it

  158. outside of the holy city,

  159. gotten rid of it somewhere.

  160. Mary is slow

  161. to believe

  162. Jesus had been risen,

  163. but she's not the only one.

  164. Even Peter and John,

  165. though somewhat puzzled

  166. at the disturbed grave clothes

  167. in the empty tomb,

  168. didn't automatically jump

  169. to the conclusion

  170. that Jesus had been resurrected.

  171. Verse 8,

  172. finally,

  173. the other disciple

  174. who had reached

  175. the tomb first

  176. also went in.

  177. He saw

  178. and believed.

  179. Now,

  180. you think,

  181. he believes

  182. in the resurrection,

  183. but no,

  184. verse 9,

  185. they still did not

  186. understand

  187. from scripture

  188. that Jesus

  189. had to rise

  190. from the dead.

  191. I think

  192. John's first assumption

  193. is

  194. that Jesus

  195. has gone

  196. from the tomb

  197. straight to heaven.

  198. That tells me

  199. that these disciples

  200. were not easily

  201. excitable

  202. or gullible people.

  203. They weren't

  204. actually looking

  205. for a resurrection.

  206. But what they were

  207. confronted with

  208. on that morning

  209. was a

  210. bodiless tomb.

  211. That's what

  212. they were confronted with.

  213. There was no body

  214. in the tomb.

  215. You cannot play

  216. around

  217. with the resurrection

  218. of Jesus

  219. and can see

  220. that maybe

  221. it was just

  222. some sort of

  223. spiritual resurrection.

  224. The body

  225. wasn't there.

  226. And one of the

  227. great historical

  228. evidences

  229. of the resurrection

  230. is that the tomb

  231. where he was

  232. buried

  233. was emptied

  234. on the third day

  235. and the enemies

  236. of Jesus

  237. could not

  238. produce a body.

  239. The assumption

  240. of Mary

  241. that the Jewish

  242. leaders had

  243. taken the body

  244. of Jesus

  245. away

  246. was her first

  247. assumption.

  248. And all the

  249. Jewish leaders

  250. needed to do

  251. was to kill

  252. off Christianity

  253. was to go

  254. boom

  255. there's your

  256. dead Lord.

  257. In fact

  258. it's

  259. one of the

  260. striking things

  261. about

  262. the resurrection

  263. of Jesus

  264. is that

  265. in the days

  266. and the weeks

  267. and the months

  268. that passed

  269. nobody

  270. was able

  271. to be reduced

  272. in order to

  273. kill off the

  274. things that both

  275. the Jewish

  276. and the Roman

  277. rulers

  278. hated so much.

  279. the advancement

  280. of this

  281. cult

  282. called

  283. Christianity.

  284. Some have

  285. tried to say

  286. well he didn't

  287. really die

  288. he was revived

  289. in the cool

  290. of the tomb

  291. and moved

  292. the stone

  293. away on his

  294. own.

  295. This goes

  296. against the

  297. horrible realities

  298. of crucifixion

  299. and against

  300. the rigorous

  301. steps that

  302. Pilate and

  303. the leaders

  304. demanded

  305. to make sure

  306. that he was

  307. in fact dead.

  308. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  309. 19

  310. you can

  311. read that.

  312. Others have

  313. tried to say

  314. that the

  315. disciples

  316. stole the

  317. body.

  318. A couple

  319. of things

  320. about that

  321. one.

  322. It would

  323. seem a bit

  324. odd that if

  325. they stole

  326. the body

  327. that they

  328. would actually

  329. unwrap the

  330. grave clothes

  331. first and

  332. leave.

  333. I mean who

  334. wants to do

  335. that?

  336. Who wants

  337. to unwrap

  338. the grave

  339. clothes and

  340. cut away a

  341. bloody

  342. beaten

  343. naked body?

  344. No one

  345. would do

  346. that.

  347. But more

  348. significantly

  349. if they

  350. took the

  351. body it

  352. would mean

  353. that the

  354. disciples began

  355. to risk

  356. their lives

  357. and in fact

  358. give themselves

  359. up to martyrdom

  360. for the sake

  361. of a hoax

  362. that they knew

  363. was false

  364. and was

  365. worthless.

  366. Who dies

  367. for a lie?

  368. So how

  369. else do you

  370. account for

  371. the dramatic

  372. change in the

  373. disciples as

  374. well?

  375. After Good

  376. Friday if it

  377. wasn't for

  378. the resurrection

  379. the fact is

  380. that they

  381. were utterly

  382. dejected,

  383. they were

  384. terrified after

  385. the death of

  386. Jesus that

  387. they too

  388. would die.

  389. The people

  390. who had

  391. killed their

  392. boss,

  393. their leader

  394. were potentially

  395. going to kill

  396. them too.

  397. They did not

  398. have a hope

  399. for resurrection,

  400. they were ready

  401. to go back

  402. fishing but

  403. were scared

  404. of the authorities

  405. that put their

  406. teeth to the

  407. death and so

  408. they hid

  409. themselves in

  410. a room,

  411. a bunch of

  412. cowards,

  413. hoping not to

  414. be found,

  415. hoping not to

  416. be put to

  417. death.

  418. And then

  419. Jesus appears

  420. to them.

  421. And in the

  422. next coming

  423. weeks these

  424. men went

  425. from cowards

  426. to courageous,

  427. bold men

  428. willing to

  429. die.

  430. what had

  431. happened to

  432. them.

  433. Their own

  434. account was

  435. they had

  436. seen the

  437. Lord alive.

  438. The evidence

  439. is there for

  440. sure.

  441. But doubting

  442. the resurrection

  443. of Jesus is

  444. common.

  445. Strangely enough

  446. though, it's

  447. the first person

  448. to doubt the

  449. resurrection,

  450. the first

  451. person who

  452. was to

  453. actually

  454. specifically

  455. doubt the

  456. resurrection,

  457. not just

  458. question whether

  459. it happened

  460. or not have

  461. a confused

  462. assumption about

  463. it, but to

  464. say I will

  465. not believe

  466. it, was

  467. in fact not

  468. an opposer

  469. of Jesus but

  470. one of his

  471. closest supporters,

  472. Thomas.

  473. Thomas wasn't

  474. there when

  475. Jesus first

  476. appeared to

  477. the disciples.

  478. Have a look

  479. at it there in

  480. verse 24.

  481. Now Thomas

  482. called Didymus,

  483. one of the

  484. twelve, was

  485. not with the

  486. disciples when

  487. Jesus came.

  488. So the other

  489. disciples told

  490. him, we have

  491. seen the

  492. Lord.

  493. But he said

  494. to them, unless

  495. I see the

  496. nail marks in

  497. his hands and

  498. put my finger

  499. where the nails

  500. were and put

  501. my hand in

  502. his side, I

  503. will not

  504. believe.

  505. Unless I

  506. see it for

  507. myself, I

  508. will not

  509. believe it.

  510. I will

  511. believe if

  512. Jesus comes

  513. and shows

  514. himself to

  515. me.

  516. The odd

  517. thing is

  518. that for

  519. Thomas, like

  520. the other

  521. disciples, the

  522. resurrection was

  523. not a new

  524. idea.

  525. As an

  526. Orthodox Jew, he

  527. would have

  528. believed in

  529. everyone being

  530. resurrected to

  531. face judgment

  532. when God

  533. calls the

  534. end of the

  535. world to

  536. be.

  537. But he

  538. doubts the

  539. resurrection of

  540. Jesus here.

  541. His

  542. response to

  543. the news is

  544. absolute.

  545. He makes

  546. his demands

  547. in absolute

  548. terms.

  549. Unless I

  550. see and

  551. place my

  552. hands, I

  553. will not

  554. believe.

  555. He demands

  556. tangible

  557. proof.

  558. He rejects

  559. the witness of

  560. ten or more

  561. of his

  562. closest mates.

  563. He dictates

  564. absolute terms to

  565. God about

  566. believing, which

  567. reveal a lack of

  568. wisdom and

  569. humility.

  570. What he has

  571. not yet

  572. grappled with

  573. is that

  574. seeing does

  575. not equal

  576. believing.

  577. You see, many

  578. people saw the

  579. miracles of

  580. Jesus and

  581. yet they

  582. didn't believe.

  583. They in fact

  584. plotted to kill

  585. him when they

  586. saw Jesus

  587. command Lazarus

  588. to walk out of

  589. the tomb.

  590. Dead man walking.

  591. They saw it

  592. happen and

  593. instead of

  594. going, my

  595. goodness, who

  596. is this man?

  597. They went, right,

  598. it's time to

  599. kill this guy.

  600. Seeing doesn't

  601. equal belief.

  602. And it's a

  603. mistake that's so

  604. easy to make.

  605. The assumption

  606. that if God

  607. would appear to

  608. me or directly

  609. intervene in

  610. certain aspects of

  611. my life for my

  612. good as I

  613. determine it, then

  614. I would believe.

  615. In other words,

  616. if God would

  617. appear to me on

  618. my terms, then

  619. I would believe

  620. he is God.

  621. Of course, the

  622. irony of that is

  623. that a God who

  624. submits to my

  625. terms isn't so

  626. much of a fancy

  627. God after all.

  628. I remember

  629. going through

  630. US customs.

  631. Here's another

  632. one of those

  633. US customs

  634. stories.

  635. Going from

  636. Canada into

  637. the US,

  638. walking up to

  639. the counter,

  640. handing over my

  641. passport, and the

  642. custom guy takes a

  643. look at it, big

  644. long pause, and

  645. he says here,

  646. you're a

  647. clergyman.

  648. Yes, yes I

  649. am.

  650. Right, I've got a

  651. question for you,

  652. and it was like,

  653. is this like one of

  654. those test things?

  655. You know, I'm saying

  656. I'm here on business,

  657. I've got something to

  658. declare, is he trying

  659. to check me out,

  660. what's the deal here?

  661. And he said, what

  662. would you say to a

  663. person who says to

  664. you, show me God and

  665. I'll believe in him?

  666. And so I'm thinking,

  667. oh, in that moment

  668. God help me, you

  669. know, I might be

  670. stuck in Canada, I

  671. mean, please help me

  672. in this moment.

  673. And I said to him,

  674. Jesus said, you see

  675. me and you see the

  676. Father.

  677. So God actually has

  678. revealed himself, he

  679. has come into this

  680. world and revealed

  681. himself.

  682. And he's done sort of

  683. things, not just makes

  684. claims that he's God,

  685. but he did things to

  686. prove he was God, he

  687. raised people from the

  688. dead, he healed the

  689. sick, he calmed the

  690. waters, and I said

  691. historical facts that

  692. prove that he was who

  693. he said he was.

  694. But let me say that

  695. plenty of people saw

  696. Jesus and they saw the

  697. miracles he did and yet

  698. they still plotted to

  699. kill him.

  700. I said, I would say to

  701. that person, don't make

  702. this mistake of thinking

  703. that seeing equals

  704. believing.

  705. And I said, the reality

  706. is I could be God right

  707. here, right in front of

  708. you now and prove it to

  709. you, but if your heart

  710. is one where you were

  711. determined to will to

  712. not to believe, you

  713. won't.

  714. I said, that's basically

  715. what I would say to

  716. that person.

  717. I said, there is plenty

  718. of evidence.

  719. I said, I would

  720. encourage that person to

  721. go and read the

  722. evidence in the

  723. Gospels and ask for

  724. eyes to see.

  725. He gave me my passport

  726. and he slid it across

  727. and said, okay, you

  728. pass.

  729. So what happens with

  730. Thomas?

  731. Reading on in verse

  732. 26.

  733. A week later, his

  734. disciples were in the

  735. house again and Thomas

  736. was with them.

  737. Although the doors were

  738. locked, Jesus came and

  739. stood among them and

  740. said, peace be with you.

  741. And he said to Thomas,

  742. over here, put your

  743. hand, put your finger

  744. here and see my hands

  745. and reach out your

  746. hand and put it into

  747. my side.

  748. Stop doubting and

  749. believe.

  750. When Jesus did finally

  751. appear to Thomas, he

  752. says, just stop doubting

  753. and believe.

  754. So the call from Jesus

  755. to Thomas was to stop

  756. his disbelief.

  757. And Jesus in that

  758. moment was incredibly

  759. merciful to him and

  760. came to him in

  761. demonstration of his

  762. resurrection and Thomas

  763. believed.

  764. The interesting thing

  765. is though, that when

  766. you go through the

  767. gospels, the latter

  768. part of the gospels,

  769. and you move even

  770. into the early parts

  771. of Acts, Jesus'

  772. intention was not for

  773. everyone to see in the

  774. same way.

  775. In fact, Jesus did not

  776. appear to everyone

  777. after his resurrection.

  778. He could have just

  779. wandered up to Pilate

  780. one day and said,

  781. wrong.

  782. But his intention was

  783. not to reveal himself

  784. to everyone.

  785. Yes, he did appear to

  786. well over 500 people at

  787. different times.

  788. Enough saw him alive.

  789. But his intention was

  790. not for everyone to

  791. believe him in that

  792. way.

  793. John, who wrote this

  794. biography, was one of the

  795. eyewitnesses.

  796. And this is what he says

  797. about how we come to see

  798. and believe.

  799. Verse 30, Jesus did

  800. many other miraculous

  801. signs in the presence

  802. of his disciples, which

  803. are not recorded in this

  804. book.

  805. But these are written

  806. that you may believe

  807. that Jesus is the

  808. Christ, the Son of God,

  809. and that by believing

  810. you may have life in

  811. his name.

  812. What he is saying is

  813. that what is written in

  814. this biography of

  815. Jesus' life, his

  816. ministry, his death,

  817. his resurrection, is

  818. everything that you need

  819. to believe.

  820. In fact, he says,

  821. Jesus did plenty of

  822. other stuff, but I

  823. haven't written them

  824. down because you don't

  825. need to know about it.

  826. We have everything that

  827. we need to believe right

  828. in front of us.

  829. So can I encourage you

  830. this Easter to read

  831. one of the biographies of

  832. Jesus, Matthew, Mark,

  833. Luke, John.

  834. Just read one of those

  835. biographies and ask for

  836. eyes to see the risen

  837. Lord.

  838. Of course, there are

  839. also those who refuse

  840. to accept the evidence

  841. of Jesus' resurrection

  842. or even look into it

  843. because it's not a matter

  844. of historical facts.

  845. It's not a matter of

  846. historical evidence.

  847. It's a matter of the

  848. claims that Jesus made.

  849. And this is the unbelief

  850. of the will.

  851. That is, if Jesus rose

  852. from the dead, then he

  853. is who he says he is

  854. and he is king and he

  855. is Lord.

  856. He is God and he

  857. commands our allegiance.

  858. And so the rejection

  859. of the resurrection then

  860. is a rejection of the

  861. will.

  862. It's not about the

  863. intellect.

  864. It's about the heart.

  865. It's about the will.

  866. Look at what Thomas

  867. says when he realized

  868. that Jesus had come

  869. back to life.

  870. Verse 28 reveals the

  871. consequences of the

  872. resurrection of Jesus.

  873. The meaning of it.

  874. Thomas said to him,

  875. my Lord and my God.

  876. His first questions

  877. were not, how are you

  878. walking around with a

  879. hole in your side?

  880. The first thing that

  881. impacted him was the

  882. meaning of the

  883. resurrection.

  884. My Lord and my God,

  885. it's true.

  886. Everything you said

  887. about yourself is true.

  888. He is God.

  889. He is the king of the

  890. universe.

  891. He is my Lord.

  892. He is my king.

  893. He is my boss.

  894. He is my ruler.

  895. He is my God.

  896. Belief in the

  897. resurrection of Jesus

  898. for Thomas and for

  899. many of us may just

  900. simply be in the end of

  901. the matter, a matter of

  902. the will.

  903. It is about who's in

  904. charge of my life.

  905. It's about who's in

  906. charge of my world.

  907. God.

  908. And we don't have

  909. Thomas' direct evidence.

  910. We are more like Peter

  911. and John in the tomb.

  912. There is evidence and

  913. either we see through it

  914. or we don't.

  915. And the issue for us here

  916. this morning is do you

  917. see?

  918. This is what I mean.

  919. Your doorbell rings this

  920. afternoon and one of your

  921. friends asked to come in

  922. and have a chat with you.

  923. He comes and says, I have

  924. some really bad news.

  925. Your brother has just

  926. died.

  927. And you say, shaking your

  928. head, no, I don't believe

  929. it.

  930. I saw him this morning and

  931. he was fine.

  932. I don't believe it.

  933. It can't be true.

  934. And your friend says, well,

  935. we went off to the Easter

  936. show together and as we

  937. were leaving, this car went

  938. out of control, jumped the

  939. curve and hit him.

  940. And I knelt over him and I

  941. waited for the ambulance and I

  942. saw it and he died in my arms

  943. and he is gone.

  944. And you say, oh, I see.

  945. What do you mean?

  946. Oh, I see.

  947. What you mean in that

  948. moment is the witness of your

  949. friend has become a window

  950. and the reality of the window

  951. has become plain.

  952. You were not there.

  953. You did not see the

  954. accident.

  955. But still you say, and

  956. it is right to say with all

  957. your heart, I see.

  958. I now understand.

  959. And God has brought you here

  960. this morning, my friends, for

  961. this message and for this

  962. Bible passage and for this

  963. story of the resurrection of

  964. Jesus so that you might go,

  965. oh, I see.

  966. Through the witness of John,

  967. John says, I see.

  968. I understand.

  969. I see.

  970. I understand.

  971. And that in seeing you might

  972. believe in Jesus and have life

  973. in his name.

  974. John says, but these things are

  975. written that you might believe

  976. that Jesus is the Christ,

  977. the Son of God, and that by

  978. believing you may have life in

  979. his name.

  980. And so my prayer for you this

  981. morning is that you will now,

  982. before this service is over,

  983. or very soon, by God's grace,

  984. say, oh, I see.

  985. And in seeing the resurrected

  986. Jesus, we'll live like he lives

  987. forever.

  988. Amen.
