  1. It's a story some of you may have heard before.

  2. It was written by a preacher in the 1950s

  3. and it's been quoted in a number of places.

  4. It says,

  5. On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur,

  6. there was once a crude little life-saving station.

  7. The building was just a hut and there was only one boat,

  8. but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea.

  9. With no thought for their own comfort,

  10. they went out day and night tirelessly searching for the lost.

  11. Some of those who were saved

  12. and various others in the surrounding area

  13. wanted to become associated with the station

  14. and gave of their time, money and effort for the support of the work.

  15. New boats were bought, new crews trained

  16. and the little life-saving station grew.

  17. Some of the members of the life-saving station

  18. were unhappy that the building was so crude and poorly equipped.

  19. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided

  20. as the first refuge of those safe from the sea.

  21. They replaced the emergency cots with beds

  22. and put better furniture in the enlarged building.

  23. Now, the life-saving station

  24. became a popular gathering place for its members

  25. and they decorated it beautifully

  26. because they used it as a sort of a club.

  27. Fewer members were now interested in going to sea

  28. on life-saving missions,

  29. so they hired lifeboat crews to do this important work.

  30. The life-saving motif still prevailed in the club's decorations

  31. and there was a liturgical lifeboat in the room

  32. where the club's initiations were held.

  33. About this time, a large ship wrecked off the coast

  34. and the hired crews brought in boatloads

  35. of cold, wet and half-drowned people.

  36. They were dirty and sick.

  37. The beautiful new club was in chaos,

  38. so the property committee immediately had a shower house

  39. built outside the club where victims of shipwrecks

  40. could be cleaned up before coming inside.

  41. At the next meeting,

  42. there was a split among the club membership.

  43. Most of the members wanted to stop the club's life-saving activities

  44. for being unpleasant

  45. and a hindrance to the normal social life of the club.

  46. Some members insisted upon life-saving as their primary purpose

  47. and pointed out that they were still called a life-saving station.

  48. But they were finally voted down

  49. and told that if they wanted to save the lives

  50. of all the various kinds of people

  51. who were shipwrecked in those waters,

  52. they could begin their own life-saving station.

  53. So they did.

  54. As the years went by,

  55. the new station experienced the same changes

  56. that occurred in the old.

  57. It evolved into a club

  58. and yet another life-saving station was founded.

  59. History continued to repeat itself

  60. and if you visit that sea coast today,

  61. you will find a number of exclusive clubs along that shore.

  62. Shipwrecks are frequent in those waters,

  63. but most of the people drown.

  64. In Mark 10, verse 45,

    Mark 10:45

  65. Jesus declares that his life and ministry

  66. is one of service.

  67. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,

  68. but to serve

  69. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  70. Jesus tells us that he came to rescue many people.

  71. His coming was a life-saving mission.

  72. Now we were preaching a short message

  73. over the next three weeks

  74. from Mark chapter 11 and 12

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  75. and as you read these chapters

  76. and I'd encourage you to do it at home,

  77. it doesn't take long,

  78. you get a strong sense

  79. that Jesus has come on the scene

  80. and he has disturbed a very comfortable club.

  81. And for the leaders of that club,

  82. he has become a source of threat

  83. and annoyance

  84. and from their point of view,

  85. he doesn't understand their history,

  86. he doesn't care about their culture,

  87. he doesn't understand their place

  88. and he doesn't understand their authority.

  89. And he is not a voice to be listened to,

  90. he is a problem to be dealt with.

  91. From Jesus' point of view,

  92. they do not understand God's purposes for his world

  93. and the place that they have with regard to them.

  94. And so, there is this huge clash of authority.

  95. Now the early part of Mark's gospel

  96. is a series of stories about Jesus

  97. which beg the question,

  98. who is this man?

  99. Who is this man that teaches with this authority?

  100. Who is this man that even the demons obey him?

  101. Who is this man who stills the wind

  102. and the waves with a word?

  103. Who is this man who claims to have authority

  104. to forgive sins?

  105. Who is this man who raises the dead?

  106. And Mark tells one story after another

  107. and he brings us to a turning point

  108. in chapter 8, verse 27.

  109. Jesus is travelling with his disciples

  110. and he asks the question,

  111. who do people say I am?

  112. What's the gods?

  113. What's everybody saying about me?

  114. And the disciples say,

  115. well, some people are saying you're John the Baptist

  116. and others are saying you're Elijah,

  117. one of the prophets that died a long time ago.

  118. But he doesn't leave it there.

  119. He fingers the disciples personally.

  120. He eyeballs the lot of them.

  121. What about you?

  122. Who do you say I am?

  123. And Peter answers,

  124. you are the Christ.

  125. You are the king.

  126. And he's absolutely right.

  127. But Jesus commands the disciples

  128. not to tell anyone about him.

  129. And there's a good reason

  130. the disciples now have to learn

  131. how this king is going to exercise his authority.

  132. They've recognised who he is,

  133. but they have no idea

  134. how this king is going to reign.

  135. And Jesus now begins to teach his disciples

  136. what his kingship will mean

  137. and how his authority will be exercised.

  138. And it says in chapter 8,

  139. verse 31,

  140. he began to teach them

  141. that the Son of Man

  142. must suffer many things

  143. and be rejected by the elders,

  144. the chief priests,

  145. and the teachers of the law,

  146. that he must be killed

  147. and after three days rise again.

  148. It's the first time in Mark's Gospel

  149. that Jesus mentions

  150. his rejection

  151. and his death.

  152. So you get to chapter 11

  153. where we are this morning

  154. and Jesus has taught

  155. about his rejection

  156. and his death

  157. on a number of occasions.

  158. It's getting closer.

  159. Verse 1 says

  160. that they were approaching Jerusalem.

  161. It's the first time

  162. that he's been in Jerusalem

  163. in Mark's Gospel.

  164. He rides into the city

  165. on a donkey,

  166. the crowd giving him

  167. a ticker tape parade.

  168. They welcome him

  169. with palm branches.

  170. They rejoice in his coming

  171. in the name of the Lord.

  172. They're looking for the promises

  173. of God

  174. to their great king David

  175. to be fulfilled.

  176. The king makes his authoritative entry

  177. into his capital city.

  178. It's late in the day

  179. and then he leaves again

  180. and stays the night

  181. just across the valley in Bethany.

  182. Mark 11 verse 15

    Mark 11:15

  183. tells us that Jesus

  184. returned the next day.

  185. He came into the temple courts.

  186. He wrought havoc.

  187. He drove out everybody

  188. who was buying and selling.

  189. He turned over the tables

  190. of the money changers

  191. and those selling doves.

  192. Gentle Jesus,

  193. meek and mild.

  194. Can you imagine

  195. what would happen

  196. if I left church this morning,

  197. go down into Westfield,

  198. into Myra

  199. and start turning over the tables?

  200. I will be in court

  201. in North Sydney

  202. on Monday morning.

  203. I'd get a reaction.

  204. Jesus is incensed.

  205. He quotes the scriptures.

  206. My house will be called

  207. a house of prayer

  208. for all the nations.

  209. And then he adds,

  210. and you have made it

  211. a den of robbers.

  212. He's passionately distressed

  213. at the commercialisation

  214. of the house of God.

  215. And even more so,

  216. he is disturbing the club.

  217. For the Jews,

  218. the temple was the symbol

  219. of their own cultural identity.

  220. Jesus is picking up

  221. on God's promise to Abraham

  222. of all the nations

  223. being blessed through him.

  224. The temple was meant

  225. to be a place of blessing

  226. to the world

  227. where all nations

  228. could come to meet with God.

  229. And they do not touch him

  230. with a finger

  231. when he does these things.

  232. But they set their minds

  233. on a course of action.

  234. Verse 18, chapter 11.

  235. The chief priests

  236. and the teachers of the law

  237. heard this,

  238. and they began looking

  239. for a way to kill him,

  240. for they feared him.

  241. Because the whole crowd

  242. was amazed at his teaching.

  243. And so the die is cast,

  244. the scene is set

  245. for a great contest

  246. which is centred around

  247. the person

  248. and the authority

  249. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  250. Who's in charge?

  251. Who's calling the shots?

  252. Where does real power lie?

  253. In verse 27,

  254. Mark tells us

  255. that Jesus again

  256. returned to Jerusalem

  257. the next day.

  258. He's walking

  259. in the temple courts

  260. and he's confronted

  261. by the people

  262. that he's been

  263. teaching his disciples

  264. will be the ones

  265. who will reject him.

  266. They are the ones

  267. who the day before

  268. determined amongst themselves

  269. that they would find

  270. a way to kill him.

  271. The chief priests,

  272. the teachers of the law,

  273. the elders.

  274. It is a very prestigious

  275. gathering.

  276. The groups taken together

  277. were known as

  278. the Sanhedrin

  279. or the Jewish ruling council.

  280. The chief priests

  281. were the senior temple priests.

  282. The teachers of the law

  283. were the leading

  284. Pharisee scholars.

  285. They were the Bible teachers.

  286. The elders

  287. were the lay aristocrats,

  288. prominent leaders

  289. among the Jews.

  290. And so Jesus

  291. has stepped into

  292. an open confrontation

  293. with the senior

  294. religious

  295. and political leaders

  296. from amongst

  297. the Jewish people.

  298. He has confronted

  299. the establishment,

  300. those in control,

  301. and they are determined

  302. to kill him.

  303. And they do

  304. what they didn't do

  305. the day before.

  306. They confront Jesus

  307. in public.

  308. And in verse 28,

  309. they say,

  310. by what authority

  311. are you doing

  312. these things?

  313. Who gave you

  314. the authority

  315. to do this?

  316. And it's a trap

  317. because as soon

  318. as he says

  319. God's authority,

  320. they will have

  321. a basis

  322. for accusing him

  323. of submitting

  324. to a different king

  325. and then they would

  326. be able to call

  327. for his execution.

  328. And Jesus knows

  329. it's a trap

  330. and Jesus turns

  331. to them and says,

  332. let me ask you

  333. a question.

  334. Verse 30,

  335. John's baptism.

  336. Was it from heaven

  337. or from men?

  338. Tell me.

  339. He snookers them.

  340. If you know the game,

  341. they've caught

  342. and they won't

  343. answer him.

  344. And their reasoning is,

  345. look,

  346. if we say he's from heaven,

  347. Jesus will say,

  348. well,

  349. why didn't you believe him?

  350. And they didn't dare

  351. say he was from men

  352. because they feared

  353. the crowd

  354. because all the people

  355. believed that John

  356. was a prophet of God.

  357. The crowd would rise up

  358. against them

  359. if they said that.

  360. And so they said,

  361. we don't know.

  362. And Jesus answered,

  363. neither will I

  364. answer you.

  365. Calls them at their own game.

  366. They were unwilling

  367. to say.

  368. They had an opinion.

  369. They didn't believe

  370. John and they didn't

  371. accept his authority.

  372. They don't believe

  373. in Jesus

  374. and they don't

  375. accept his authority.

  376. They haven't got

  377. the guts to say it.

  378. For all their religiosity,

  379. they're unwilling

  380. to believe.

  381. They've made

  382. a conscious decision

  383. to reject

  384. the authority

  385. of Jesus.

  386. They are religious

  387. and they are

  388. unbelievers.

  389. Josh Short

  390. comes at night.

  391. He's one of our

  392. young ministry interns.

  393. His dad's a minister

  394. in Vancouver

  395. in Canada

  396. and a few years ago

  397. I heard Josh Short's

  398. dad speak

  399. to our ministers

  400. here in Sydney

  401. and he

  402. and his congregation

  403. including J.I. Packer

  404. which I think

  405. this is a badge

  406. of honour

  407. have been kicked

  408. out of the Anglican

  409. Church in Canada

  410. only recently.

  411. And for a number

  412. of years

  413. David Short

  414. was persecuted

  415. by his diocesan

  416. bishop.

  417. The bishop

  418. had no confidence

  419. in him

  420. because he preached

  421. the scriptures

  422. as the word of God

  423. and he called

  424. people to live

  425. in relationship

  426. to Christ.

  427. But the bishop

  428. has walked away

  429. from the scriptures.

  430. He endorses

  431. immoral relationships.

  432. He ordains clergy

  433. who are openly

  434. and unashamedly

  435. immoral.

  436. His theological

  437. college runs

  438. courses in shamanism

  439. and the tarot.

  440. But the bishop

  441. is a great

  442. civic leader

  443. who wears

  444. the purple

  445. and is probably

  446. revered by many

  447. in his community

  448. because he has

  449. a human touch.

  450. Lives like

  451. an unbeliever.

  452. And appallingly

  453. applies a teaching

  454. that actively

  455. leads people

  456. away from Christ.

  457. He does not

  458. submit to the

  459. authority of

  460. the Lord Jesus

  461. Christ.

  462. It's not just

  463. unbelieving bishops.

  464. Unbelief comes

  465. close to home.

  466. When we reject

  467. the authority

  468. of Jesus

  469. to rule our lives

  470. when we say

  471. no to him

  472. when we sit

  473. in church

  474. hearing the words

  475. of Jesus

  476. without any

  477. intention of

  478. submitting to them

  479. when we know

  480. what the scriptures

  481. say and we are

  482. unwilling to

  483. obey

  484. we try to

  485. create a bit

  486. of space

  487. to do

  488. what we want

  489. for a while

  490. maybe try

  491. a forbidden

  492. relationship

  493. hold back

  494. on time

  495. or money

  496. that we

  497. ought to

  498. give to God

  499. refuse

  500. to forgive

  501. the person

  502. that we know

  503. that we have

  504. to because

  505. Jesus has

  506. forgiven us

  507. you might be

  508. a person

  509. who has

  510. heard the

  511. call of

  512. Jesus

  513. many times

  514. and you

  515. might be

  516. one of those

  517. people

  518. who really

  519. don't need

  520. convincing

  521. that he is

  522. real

  523. you know

  524. that he is

  525. you've weighed

  526. the evidence

  527. maybe you

  528. felt great

  529. conviction

  530. but you

  531. have not

  532. been willing

  533. to count

  534. the cost

  535. and take

  536. the risk

  537. of submitting

  538. to his

  539. authority

  540. you know

  541. Jesus is

  542. true

  543. yet you

  544. remain

  545. unwilling

  546. to trust

  547. him

  548. that is

  549. an expression

  550. of

  551. unbelief

  552. in chapter

  553. 12

  554. Jesus

  555. continues

  556. to confront

  557. his

  558. questioners

  559. he tells

  560. a parable

  561. which they

  562. know

  563. is against

  564. them

  565. Jesus

  566. actually

  567. takes an

  568. old

  569. testament

  570. story

  571. from

  572. Isaiah

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  573. chapter

  574. 5

  575. and he

  576. updates

  577. it

  578. to explain

  579. the current

  580. conflict

  581. in Isaiah

  582. it's a

  583. parable

  584. of the

  585. vineyard

  586. this

  587. vineyard

  588. it's

  589. loved

  590. it's

  591. tended

  592. it's

  593. fertilised

  594. it's

  595. protected

  596. from

  597. wild

  598. animals

  599. it's

  600. watched

  601. over

  602. and it

  603. never

  604. produces

  605. a decent

  606. crop

  607. of

  608. anything

  609. and in

  610. Isaiah

  611. 5

  612. the garden

  613. is

  614. Israel

  615. and Judah

  616. the people

  617. of God

  618. and the

  619. gardener

  620. is God

  621. and he

  622. looks for

  623. righteousness

  624. and justice

  625. amongst his

  626. people

  627. and he

  628. sees only

  629. bloodshed

  630. and hears

  631. only cries

  632. of distress

  633. and in the

  634. end God's

  635. justice

  636. will be to

  637. destroy the

  638. garden

  639. that has

  640. only produced

  641. bloodshed

  642. instead of

  643. justice

  644. and cries

  645. of distress

  646. instead of

  647. righteousness

  648. in

  649. in Mark

  650. in Mark 12

  651. when Jesus

  652. picks up

  653. on this

  654. story

  655. and tells

  656. it again

  657. it's

  658. similar

  659. but

  660. different

  661. a whole

  662. series

  663. of people

  664. are sent

  665. by the

  666. owner

  667. of the

  668. vineyard

  669. to collect

  670. the rent

  671. and the

  672. tenants

  673. beat them

  674. up

  675. and they

  676. shame

  677. some

  678. and they

  679. kill

  680. some

  681. and they

  682. reject

  683. the

  684. authority

  685. of the

  686. owner

  687. of the

  688. vineyard

  689. by

  690. rejecting

  691. every

  692. messenger

  693. that he

  694. sends

  695. to them

  696. and finally

  697. the owner

  698. sends the

  699. son that

  700. he loves

  701. and he

  702. says they'll

  703. listen to

  704. him

  705. they'll

  706. respect

  707. him

  708. and the

  709. tenants

  710. make a

  711. greedy

  712. grab

  713. for

  714. ownership

  715. kill

  716. the

  717. son

  718. claim

  719. the

  720. vineyard

  721. as

  722. their

  723. own

  724. and what

  725. Jesus

  726. has just

  727. done

  728. is give

  729. an Old

  730. Testament

  731. history

  732. lesson

  733. the

  734. people

  735. of God

  736. have

  737. rejected

  738. one

  739. prophet

  740. after

  741. another

  742. including

  743. the very

  744. last

  745. one

  746. John

  747. the

  748. Baptist

  749. and now

  750. they are

  751. in the

  752. process

  753. of rejecting

  754. not just

  755. a prophet

  756. but God's

  757. dearly

  758. loved

  759. son

  760. and if

  761. the parable

  762. ended

  763. there it

  764. would be

  765. a tragic

  766. story

  767. it would

  768. appear as

  769. though evil

  770. had triumphed

  771. over good

  772. injustice

  773. over justice

  774. but not

  775. so

  776. the owner

  777. of the

  778. vineyard

  779. will have

  780. the last

  781. word

  782. and you

  783. see it

  784. in verse

  785. 9

  786. chapter 12

  787. he will

  788. come

  789. and kill

  790. those tenants

  791. and give

  792. the vineyard

  793. to others

  794. the rejected

  795. son will

  796. become the

  797. keystone

  798. that holds

  799. the whole

  800. show together

  801. and the

  802. leaders respond

  803. to Jesus

  804. parable

  805. in verse

  806. 12

  807. they looked

  808. for a way

  809. to arrest

  810. him

  811. because they

  812. knew

  813. that he

  814. had spoken

  815. this parable

  816. against them

  817. but they

  818. were afraid

  819. because of

  820. the crowd

  821. so they

  822. left him

  823. and they

  824. went away

  825. and so

  826. in the

  827. immediate

  828. context

  829. Jesus

  830. is heading

  831. to death

  832. and apparent

  833. defeat

  834. yet the

  835. parable

  836. foreshadows

  837. that his

  838. death

  839. will not

  840. be the

  841. end of

  842. the matter

  843. the owner

  844. of the

  845. vineyard

  846. will come

  847. and he

  848. will destroy

  849. those who

  850. have rejected

  851. his son

  852. they reject

  853. his authority

  854. when they

  855. reject his

  856. son

  857. and it's a

  858. tough bottom

  859. line

  860. but the

  861. judgment

  862. of god

  863. will come

  864. and it

  865. will be

  866. fierce

  867. against

  868. those who

  869. reject

  870. his son

  871. but his

  872. judgment

  873. will not

  874. be whimsical

  875. and harsh

  876. it won't

  877. be the

  878. act of

  879. an

  880. unfair

  881. despot

  882. it will

  883. be an

  884. act of

  885. justice

  886. it will

  887. be the

  888. result of

  889. the rejection

  890. of his

  891. authority

  892. it will

  893. come after

  894. all the

  895. warnings in

  896. the world

  897. it will

  898. come to

  899. men and

  900. women who

  901. continue to

  902. reject the

  903. much loved

  904. son of god

  905. sent into

  906. our world

  907. it will

  908. come because

  909. they reject

  910. his authority

  911. and so

  912. right through

  913. mark's

  914. gospel

  915. mark tells

  916. one story

  917. after another

  918. establishing

  919. jesus authority

  920. as king

  921. and the

  922. passage this

  923. morning is a

  924. confrontation

  925. with the

  926. religious

  927. establishment

  928. the club

  929. and i could

  930. leave the

  931. message there

  932. and i could

  933. say look

  934. jesus is

  935. king

  936. he is

  937. lord

  938. in terms

  939. of the

  940. parable

  941. of the

  942. vineyard

  943. he is

  944. the very

  945. last word

  946. from god

  947. there will

  948. not be

  949. another

  950. one

  951. he is

  952. god's

  953. much loved

  954. son

  955. and if

  956. we do

  957. not

  958. listen

  959. to him

  960. there will

  961. be no

  962. other

  963. but i want

  964. to press

  965. further

  966. and say

  967. that this

  968. is much

  969. more than

  970. a power

  971. struggle

  972. the battle

  973. is really

  974. interesting

  975. but what

  976. is at stake

  977. is priceless

  978. the battle

  979. between jesus

  980. and the

  981. religious

  982. leaders

  983. in the

  984. end is

  985. about

  986. people's

  987. souls

  988. the king

  989. has not

  990. come to

  991. big note

  992. himself

  993. and for

  994. self

  995. aggrandisement

  996. he has

  997. come on

  998. the most

  999. extraordinary

  1000. rescue

  1001. mission

  1002. he's god's

  1003. much loved

  1004. son who

  1005. comes as

  1006. a slave

  1007. to rescue

  1008. us

  1009. it just

  1010. demonstrates

  1011. to us

  1012. that god

  1013. loves us

  1014. god is

  1015. wonderfully

  1016. kind to

  1017. us

  1018. and his

  1019. heart is

  1020. to see

  1021. men and

  1022. women and

  1023. boys and

  1024. girls brought

  1025. into the

  1026. safety of

  1027. his kingdom

  1028. the club

  1029. the religious

  1030. establishment

  1031. had lost

  1032. the vision

  1033. for why

  1034. they were

  1035. there

  1036. they thought

  1037. that they

  1038. were upholding

  1039. god's purposes

  1040. they had

  1041. the temple

  1042. humming

  1043. and they

  1044. were making

  1045. a motza

  1046. and the

  1047. temple services

  1048. looked fantastic

  1049. and the

  1050. priests looked

  1051. magnificent

  1052. in all their

  1053. gear

  1054. the liturgy

  1055. was rich

  1056. the oldies

  1057. were happy

  1058. the young

  1059. loved to be

  1060. there

  1061. the music

  1062. was both

  1063. contemporary

  1064. and it was

  1065. ancient

  1066. and the club

  1067. was an exciting

  1068. place to be

  1069. and the

  1070. club

  1071. had moved

  1072. the killing

  1073. of its

  1074. founder and

  1075. owner to the

  1076. main item

  1077. on its

  1078. agenda

  1079. the main

  1080. item on our

  1081. agenda must be

  1082. the purposes of

  1083. god's king

  1084. the lord jesus

  1085. christ

  1086. he did not

  1087. come to be

  1088. served but to

  1089. serve and to

  1090. give his life

  1091. as a ransom

  1092. for many

  1093. and the

  1094. agenda for us

  1095. becomes to

  1096. proclaim the

  1097. glory of god's

  1098. king

  1099. i do not want

  1100. to put you on

  1101. a guilt trip

  1102. but i do want

  1103. to ask you in

  1104. the same way as

  1105. i ask myself

  1106. do you care

  1107. about the

  1108. lost

  1109. do you care

  1110. about the

  1111. outsider

  1112. i sat at the

  1113. rugby league at

  1114. brookvale oval last

  1115. night thinking

  1116. about people

  1117. it's really easy

  1118. to be judgmental

  1119. about the number

  1120. of cans of

  1121. twoies and

  1122. jim beam going

  1123. down all

  1124. around

  1125. and to

  1126. think about

  1127. people and

  1128. their relationships

  1129. and the

  1130. families without

  1131. wedding rings and

  1132. all the things that

  1133. you see and the

  1134. drunk man hugging

  1135. one woman after

  1136. another

  1137. that was last

  1138. night brookvale

  1139. oval and that

  1140. was me wrestling

  1141. with my feelings

  1142. or over the

  1143. fence my next

  1144. door neighbours

  1145. my buddhist

  1146. neighbours who

  1147. have only just

  1148. begun to talk

  1149. to in the

  1150. last couple

  1151. of months after

  1152. being there for

  1153. nearly two

  1154. years

  1155. without christ

  1156. they are lost

  1157. and christ

  1158. does want us

  1159. to proclaim

  1160. him

  1161. and i think

  1162. if i go next

  1163. door and try

  1164. to do that

  1165. with my taxi

  1166. driver neighbour

  1167. under the

  1168. bonnet of his

  1169. car i don't

  1170. think if i do

  1171. that cold it

  1172. will work

  1173. so i think

  1174. i want to

  1175. pray for

  1176. them

  1177. and i want

  1178. to pray for

  1179. opportunities to

  1180. get to know

  1181. them

  1182. and i want to

  1183. think about how

  1184. maybe i might

  1185. show some

  1186. kindness to

  1187. them

  1188. and i'm

  1189. wondering if

  1190. a plate of

  1191. chocolate chip

  1192. cookies cooked

  1193. by kerry

  1194. might be a way

  1195. of showing

  1196. appreciation for

  1197. the work that

  1198. they've just

  1199. done fixing

  1200. our boundary

  1201. fence

  1202. so i'm

  1203. wondering if

  1204. developing

  1205. relationship like

  1206. that would

  1207. lead to

  1208. opportunity down

  1209. the track to

  1210. share something

  1211. of what i

  1212. believe or

  1213. even to invite

  1214. them to

  1215. something special

  1216. that happens

  1217. here at church

  1218. and dream a

  1219. bit more

  1220. what if lots

  1221. of us were

  1222. living like

  1223. that some

  1224. of you are

  1225. but what if

  1226. lots of us

  1227. were

  1228. engaging our

  1229. friends and

  1230. our neighbours

  1231. with the love

  1232. of christ

  1233. we would

  1234. move beyond

  1235. being like a

  1236. club we

  1237. would be

  1238. impacting our

  1239. community we

  1240. would be

  1241. showing that

  1242. we treasure

  1243. the lord

  1244. jesus in our

  1245. concern for

  1246. the lost

  1247. jesus engaged

  1248. in a massive

  1249. power play

  1250. and he would

  1251. seem to lose

  1252. when he died

  1253. but his

  1254. death was

  1255. the ransom

  1256. price for

  1257. yours and

  1258. for my

  1259. sins and

  1260. they are

  1261. many

  1262. so i don't

  1263. think it

  1264. matters if

  1265. we are

  1266. older and

  1267. conservative

  1268. younger and

  1269. wanting radical

  1270. change

  1271. we must

  1272. not be a

  1273. club in

  1274. a new

  1275. generation

  1276. that has

  1277. lost its

  1278. vision for

  1279. saving souls

  1280. may god so

  1281. bless us

  1282. that saint

  1283. paul's might

  1284. be a church

  1285. with a

  1286. people whose

  1287. ministry

  1288. brings many

  1289. people to

  1290. safety in

  1291. christ

  1292. amen
