  1. Let's pray.

  2. Father God, we thank you for your word.

  3. We pray that we would not tonight make the mistake

  4. of these who confront Jesus,

  5. who play loose and fast with the truth,

  6. who deny some of the central tenets

  7. of what it means to be part of your kingdom.

  8. We pray, Lord, that we would read your word,

  9. we would hear your word,

  10. we would understand your word

  11. and that we would not ignore it.

  12. We pray, Father, that in what we're doing tonight

  13. that we will not miss you, we pray.

  14. So we pray that we would get a greater glimpse

  15. of your glory, your purposes,

  16. and the part that we play in that as your people.

  17. And so be with us now as we open up your word

  18. that we might not just hear it,

  19. but that we might experience something of your power.

  20. And we pray it for your sake.

  21. Amen.

  22. So get your Bibles open to Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  23. Our recent sermon series on the kingdom of God,

  24. I think, is particularly helpful

  25. when we're coming to looking at Mark 12

  26. and this little short series that we got here

  27. last week, this week, and next week

  28. on the clash with ultimate authority.

  29. For anyone out there,

  30. remember how we define the kingdom of God

  31. in our series, Kingdom of God?

  32. God's people in God's place under God's rule.

  33. Yes, God's people in God's place under God's rule.

  34. Fantastic.

  35. Straight at the top of the class.

  36. Tashi, you should consider a ministry internship

  37. at some point.

  38. For the people of God in the Old Testament,

  39. much of their expectations of the kingdom

  40. centered around Israel and Jerusalem

  41. and the temple and the rituals in the temple.

  42. And what we saw in our series

  43. was that the consistent problem

  44. was that they did all the religious practice stuff

  45. but they rejected God

  46. and they rejected his authority,

  47. they rejected his word.

  48. They looked the part

  49. but in the actual fact,

  50. their hearts were a long way from God.

  51. The eventual consequence was exiled from God's place.

  52. God stuck them over there in the naughty corner

  53. for 70 years in Babylon

  54. and to fine tune them a bit.

  55. And during the course of that,

  56. God was speaking to his people

  57. and prophesying about a future day

  58. where there would be a future king,

  59. a Christ, a Messiah,

  60. who would restore the kingdom of God.

  61. And when this king comes,

  62. he will give his people new hearts

  63. which would internally be moved to obey Christ

  64. or the king, the Messiah.

  65. And so the opening words of Jesus' ministry

  66. right at the beginning of Mark's gospel

  67. are very significant for us.

  68. So chapter one says this,

  69. the time, this is the words of Jesus,

  70. the time has come.

  71. The kingdom of God is near.

  72. And so Jesus is talking about the fulfillment

  73. of all of these promises for the people of God.

  74. Jesus then goes on to demonstrate the kingdom's realm,

  75. the rule of this king.

  76. And he, as the king of the kingdom of God,

  77. by calling disciples to follow him,

  78. complete strangers,

  79. come, follow me,

  80. and they leave their nets

  81. and they go and follow Jesus.

  82. He drives out demons,

  83. he heals lepers,

  84. the blind, the paralytic,

  85. he raises the dead,

  86. he calms the storm.

  87. He demonstrates that there is nothing

  88. outside of his control.

  89. As the king of the kingdom,

  90. he rules everything.

  91. And so the kingdom of God

  92. is not restricted to Israel

  93. and Jerusalem and the temple.

  94. He is the king over everything,

  95. all encompassing.

  96. And then as you move further into Mark's gospel,

  97. you get to chapters nine and 10

  98. and we discover the surprising nature

  99. of this rule,

  100. of this king.

  101. He is, in fact,

  102. a servant king

  103. who has come to serve

  104. and not be served.

  105. He has come to give his life

  106. as a ransom for many.

  107. And the second great surprise

  108. is when you move out of chapter 10

  109. and into chapter 11

  110. and you see that the king arrives

  111. at his,

  112. the city.

  113. He arrives at Jerusalem,

  114. Jesus arrives

  115. and there's a crowd there.

  116. They've got palm trees,

  117. you know,

  118. and they're waving

  119. and they're cheering.

  120. The king has arrived.

  121. And what you discover

  122. is that when the king

  123. goes to the temple,

  124. he is rejected.

  125. He's rejected.

  126. He first of all

  127. rejects the temple

  128. and the old order of things.

  129. He gets a whip

  130. and turns over tables

  131. and drives people out.

  132. He rejects the old

  133. religious system

  134. of pomp

  135. and corruption

  136. and hypocrisy

  137. and he replaces

  138. that system

  139. with himself.

  140. He says,

  141. you don't come

  142. and meet God

  143. now through this temple.

  144. You meet God with me.

  145. So three days,

  146. I'm going to pull it down

  147. and I'm going to rebuild it again.

  148. So everything

  149. that this temple stood for

  150. is now going to be

  151. met in me.

  152. You meet God

  153. through me.

  154. You want to relate to God?

  155. It is through me.

  156. And what happens then

  157. out of there,

  158. chapter 11,

  159. Jesus curses a fig tree.

  160. It's a symbol

  161. of God's rejection

  162. of the old order of things.

  163. And so that

  164. it is completely clear

  165. what Jesus is on about,

  166. we hear the story

  167. of the parable

  168. of the tenants

  169. that Chris preached

  170. on last week.

  171. Sorry,

  172. Sam preached

  173. on last week here.

  174. that the people

  175. of Israel

  176. have consistently

  177. rejected God

  178. and rejected

  179. the messengers

  180. of God

  181. and now

  182. I'm rejecting you.

  183. I'm rejecting

  184. the old order,

  185. the old system.

  186. And so in the temple courts,

  187. the scene

  188. of the king's

  189. rejection

  190. of the old order,

  191. if you like,

  192. out on the deck,

  193. we see the rejection

  194. of Israel king

  195. by the leaders

  196. of Israel.

  197. Israel.

  198. Jesus' credibility

  199. and even his life

  200. are at stake

  201. in these encounters

  202. that he has

  203. with these religious leaders.

  204. Jesus uses

  205. each of these

  206. encounters,

  207. these clashes,

  208. as an opportunity

  209. to reveal something

  210. striking

  211. about the kingdom

  212. and what it means

  213. to be part

  214. of that kingdom.

  215. Last week,

  216. we had round one.

  217. Chief priests,

  218. teachers of the law

  219. and the elders

  220. confront Jesus

  221. and they go away

  222. with their tail

  223. between the legs.

  224. Round two

  225. is introduced

  226. in verse 13.

  227. Later,

  228. they,

  229. that's talking

  230. about the Sanhedrin,

  231. that's the Jewish

  232. ruling council,

  233. the Sanhedrin,

  234. they send

  235. some Pharisees

  236. and Herodians

  237. to Jesus

  238. to catch him

  239. in his words.

  240. There are two kinds

  241. of powers

  242. that bind people together.

  243. One is love

  244. and the other

  245. is hatred.

  246. Naturally,

  247. love is preferred.

  248. Love is the glue

  249. of the Trinity.

  250. It is,

  251. love is God's gift

  252. to the church

  253. and his command

  254. for the church

  255. but hatred

  256. can bring together

  257. diverse people.

  258. People is diverse

  259. as the Pharisees

  260. and the Herodians.

  261. There could be

  262. hardly,

  263. I think,

  264. two groups

  265. with such opposing

  266. views in Israel.

  267. The Pharisees

  268. were fierce

  269. nationalists.

  270. The Herodians,

  271. on the other hand,

  272. were supporters

  273. of Herod,

  274. the Roman ruler

  275. over Israel.

  276. The Pharisees

  277. represented

  278. a narrow,

  279. conservative Judaism

  280. and the Herodians

  281. were liberal

  282. in their convictions.

  283. The Pharisees

  284. were right-wingers,

  285. the Herodians

  286. were left-wingers.

  287. The Pharisees

  288. represented resistance

  289. to Rome,

  290. the Herodians

  291. accommodation

  292. to Rome.

  293. And what cemented

  294. them together

  295. as a group

  296. was their hatred

  297. of Jesus.

  298. They've come together

  299. because of their

  300. hatred of Jesus

  301. and the hope

  302. that we can bring

  303. this man down.

  304. And then once

  305. that's done,

  306. we'll go back

  307. to hating each other.

  308. You see,

  309. Jesus was causing

  310. havoc with the

  311. religious agenda

  312. of the Pharisees

  313. and he was causing

  314. havoc with the

  315. political agenda

  316. of the Herodians.

  317. And so they

  318. unite in an attempt

  319. to bring him down

  320. and that's what it

  321. says there in verse 12.

  322. Later,

  323. they sent

  324. some of the Pharisees

  325. and the Herodians

  326. to catch him

  327. in his words.

  328. They want to

  329. trap Jesus

  330. in his words

  331. so that they could

  332. charge him

  333. with treason

  334. or heresy,

  335. both of which

  336. they can conspire

  337. with the death

  338. penalty in some way.

  339. First though,

  340. they have to

  341. pave the way

  342. for the question

  343. in order to,

  344. by throwing Jesus

  345. off course if you like.

  346. So verse 14,

  347. they came to him

  348. and said,

  349. Teacher,

  350. we know

  351. that you are

  352. a man of integrity.

  353. You aren't swayed

  354. by men

  355. because you pay

  356. no attention

  357. to who they are

  358. but you teach

  359. the way of God

  360. in accordance

  361. with the truth.

  362. And so their lips

  363. are just dripping

  364. with insincere flattery

  365. as they attempt

  366. to appear

  367. as innocent inquirers

  368. of Jesus

  369. in a hope

  370. that Jesus

  371. will be thrown

  372. off course

  373. and they can slip

  374. their question in,

  375. he'll give them

  376. a wrong answer

  377. and bang,

  378. we've got him.

  379. They're hoping

  380. to disarm him.

  381. Ironically,

  382. their flattery

  383. contains at least

  384. an element of truth.

  385. Jesus isn't influenced

  386. by man

  387. and he wasn't

  388. influenced

  389. by their flattery

  390. in any sense.

  391. He wasn't going

  392. to be intimidated

  393. by them,

  394. he was walking

  395. into their trap

  396. with his eyes

  397. wide open

  398. and the trap

  399. is set in verse 14,

  400. is it right

  401. to pay taxes

  402. to Caesar

  403. or not?

  404. Should we pay

  405. or shouldn't we?

  406. That's a very

  407. clever question.

  408. It would seem

  409. that they have

  410. learnt

  411. something

  412. from the last

  413. encounter

  414. between Jesus

  415. and the chief priests,

  416. the teachers

  417. of the law

  418. and the elders.

  419. You remember

  420. the last encounter

  421. from last week

  422. when Jesus

  423. asked these guys

  424. a question?

  425. John's baptism,

  426. was it from man

  427. or from God?

  428. And either answer,

  429. they get together

  430. and huddle

  431. and either answer,

  432. they know,

  433. and so what do they do?

  434. These gutless weasels

  435. lied through their tooth

  436. and said they don't know.

  437. They hang loose

  438. with their convictions

  439. in order to

  440. save their egos

  441. and their skin.

  442. And so the next group

  443. have thought

  444. that was a good idea,

  445. turned Jesus' tactic around

  446. and thrown it back

  447. in his face.

  448. They've hit him

  449. with a question

  450. where either answer

  451. would be enough

  452. to secure

  453. the death penalty.

  454. A refusal

  455. to answer

  456. would be disastrous

  457. and so would evasion.

  458. And so

  459. if Jesus says,

  460. yes,

  461. pay your taxes

  462. to Caesar,

  463. he's a traitor

  464. to Israel.

  465. We can get him up

  466. on blasphemy charges.

  467. And those

  468. with the religious agenda

  469. would just have him

  470. at that

  471. and they just love that.

  472. But if he says,

  473. no,

  474. then he's stirring up

  475. a rebellion

  476. against Rome

  477. and those

  478. with a political agenda

  479. could have him

  480. up on treason charges

  481. and we'll get him

  482. for that.

  483. And so the

  484. tension

  485. you can imagine

  486. in the air

  487. is thick.

  488. Pharisees

  489. hoping for a yes,

  490. the Herodians

  491. hoping for a no,

  492. but Jesus

  493. is one step ahead.

  494. He knows

  495. their hypocrisy.

  496. It says in verse 15

  497. and he says this,

  498. why are you

  499. trying to trap me?

  500. Bring me a denarius

  501. and let me look at it.

  502. You can just imagine

  503. the hush

  504. in the crowd

  505. as Jesus

  506. takes the coin

  507. that's been given

  508. to him,

  509. probably not by Judas,

  510. and he

  511. holds it up.

  512. He holds it up

  513. in front of them

  514. and says,

  515. so whose portrait's

  516. that?

  517. Verse 16.

  518. Whose portrait's

  519. that?

  520. Whose inscription

  521. is on there?

  522. What can they say?

  523. It's pretty obvious.

  524. It's the face

  525. of Tiberius Caesar

  526. was on the inscription.

  527. It was the face

  528. that was on there

  529. and the inscription

  530. on it says,

  531. Tiberius Caesar,

  532. son of the divine

  533. Augustus.

  534. That was the

  535. inscription on it.

  536. Whose picture is it?

  537. Who made it?

  538. What do the people

  539. say?

  540. Caesar.

  541. And so Jesus

  542. says to them

  543. in verse 17

  544. what some have regarded

  545. as the single most

  546. influential political

  547. statement ever made.

  548. Give to Caesars

  549. what is Caesar's

  550. and to God

  551. what is God's.

  552. And they were

  553. all amazed

  554. at him.

  555. And Jesus

  556. temporarily

  557. saved his life

  558. as well as

  559. giving the guidelines

  560. of a proper

  561. relationship

  562. with God

  563. and Caesar.

  564. In saying

  565. give to Caesar

  566. what he

  567. seizes,

  568. Jesus recognizes

  569. there is

  570. a place

  571. under God

  572. even for a

  573. Gentile ruler

  574. in society.

  575. The Apostle Paul

  576. writes this

  577. in Romans 13

    Romans 13:4–7

  578. verses 4 to 7

  579. that such a

  580. ruler

  581. is God's

  582. servant

  583. to do you

  584. good.

  585. But if you

  586. do wrong

  587. be afraid

  588. for he does

  589. not bear

  590. the sword

  591. for nothing.

  592. He is God's

  593. servant

  594. an agent

  595. of wrath

  596. to bring

  597. punishment

  598. on the

  599. wrongdoer.

  600. Therefore

  601. it is necessary

  602. to submit

  603. to the

  604. authorities

  605. not only

  606. because of

  607. possible punishment

  608. but also

  609. because of

  610. conscience.

  611. This is also

  612. why you pay

  613. taxes

  614. for the

  615. authorities

  616. are God's

  617. servants

  618. who give

  619. their full

  620. time to

  621. governing.

  622. Give everyone

  623. what you owe

  624. him.

  625. If you owe

  626. taxes

  627. pay taxes

  628. if revenue

  629. revenue

  630. if respect

  631. then respect

  632. if honour

  633. then honour

  634. and Peter

  635. says the same

  636. has the same

  637. idea in 1 Peter 2

  638. 13

  639. when he calls

  640. for submission

  641. for the Lord's

  642. sake

  643. to every

  644. authority

  645. instituted

  646. among men.

  647. Every

  648. authority

  649. instituted

  650. among men.

  651. And so

  652. the New

  653. Testament

  654. assumes

  655. the validity

  656. of the

  657. secular state

  658. and it

  659. demands

  660. even when

  661. the secular

  662. state

  663. is controlled

  664. by a man

  665. who thinks

  666. he is

  667. God

  668. it still

  669. demands

  670. allegiance.

  671. submission.

  672. A

  673. poorly run

  674. state

  675. is better

  676. than no

  677. state at

  678. all.

  679. Of course

  680. there are

  681. some

  682. exceptions

  683. but the

  684. overall

  685. point is

  686. that

  687. Christians

  688. are called

  689. to a

  690. profound

  691. obedience

  692. to their

  693. government.

  694. Cheating

  695. on taxes

  696. is completely

  697. ruled out.

  698. there ought

  699. to be

  700. respect

  701. and

  702. submission

  703. to those

  704. in authority

  705. and must

  706. pray for

  707. those who

  708. rule over

  709. us.

  710. More often

  711. than not

  712. though

  713. the reason

  714. we obey

  715. is for fear

  716. of punishment

  717. not because

  718. of the

  719. Lord's sake

  720. right.

  721. Not because

  722. it's right

  723. but because

  724. we fear

  725. to be

  726. punished.

  727. Such as

  728. driving along

  729. the M7

  730. on the way

  731. to Katoomba

  732. and all

  733. of a sudden

  734. the traffic

  735. is all

  736. slow.

  737. We're way

  738. below the

  739. speed limit

  740. and why

  741. are we

  742. way below

  743. the speed

  744. limit?

  745. Because a

  746. policeman has

  747. pulled up

  748. someone on

  749. the side of

  750. the road

  751. and we

  752. just all

  753. assume

  754. automatically

  755. that we

  756. are guilty.

  757. We fear

  758. punishment.

  759. Not because

  760. we think

  761. it's right

  762. to stick

  763. on 100

  764. kilometres

  765. an hour.

  766. We just

  767. fear to be

  768. caught.

  769. And when we

  770. say we fear

  771. to be caught

  772. we're worried

  773. about the

  774. cost it's

  775. going to be.

  776. $200 or

  777. whatever it

  778. is for,

  779. I don't know

  780. what the

  781. speed and

  782. fine is,

  783. but whatever

  784. it is,

  785. depends on

  786. how fast

  787. you're going.

  788. We submit

  789. for the

  790. Lord's sake

  791. but Jesus

  792. brilliance

  793. really comes

  794. to the

  795. fore in

  796. the second

  797. half of

  798. the answer.

  799. Give to

  800. God what

  801. is God's.

  802. Because it's

  803. the second

  804. half of

  805. the statement,

  806. it is the

  807. emphasis of

  808. the statement.

  809. See what I'm

  810. saying there?

  811. Give to

  812. Caesar what

  813. ceases,

  814. give to

  815. God what

  816. is God

  817. means that

  818. that second

  819. half of the

  820. statement

  821. usurps it.

  822. that's the

  823. primary point.

  824. The kingdom

  825. of Jesus

  826. that Jesus

  827. is talking

  828. about isn't

  829. primarily about

  830. you pay your

  831. taxes,

  832. it's about

  833. giving God

  834. what is

  835. due to

  836. God.

  837. Our

  838. submission to

  839. God's

  840. authority will

  841. be evidence

  842. in our

  843. submission to

  844. God by

  845. obedience to

  846. what he

  847. commands.

  848. In other

  849. words, you

  850. can't say

  851. Christ is my

  852. ruler, I

  853. submit to

  854. Christ as

  855. my king and

  856. then ignore

  857. what he

  858. commands, such

  859. as submission

  860. to governing

  861. authorities or

  862. being generous or

  863. to meet together

  864. as a church or

  865. to turn the

  866. other cheek or

  867. to reject anger

  868. or to not

  869. judge or to

  870. let no unwholesome

  871. talk come out

  872. of your mouth.

  873. You can't say

  874. he is my king

  875. and then reject

  876. what he

  877. commands.

  878. In saying

  879. give to God

  880. what is God's,

  881. Jesus is

  882. recognizing that

  883. there is only

  884. one God

  885. which subtly

  886. puts Caesar

  887. in his place.

  888. but it

  889. doesn't just

  890. put Caesar

  891. in his place,

  892. he puts us

  893. in our place

  894. as well.

  895. You see, the

  896. essence of

  897. sin is to

  898. rebel against

  899. God.

  900. It's an attempt

  901. to remove

  902. God and

  903. his authority

  904. over my

  905. life so

  906. that I am

  907. king.

  908. It is to be

  909. the determinants

  910. of our own

  911. life and our

  912. own destiny

  913. and direction.

  914. And yet

  915. what this

  916. passage is

  917. saying is

  918. that whether

  919. you realize

  920. it or not,

  921. even those in

  922. positions of

  923. authority,

  924. we are all

  925. people under

  926. orders.

  927. We are all

  928. under orders.

  929. Jesus subtly

  930. states God's

  931. ownership of

  932. everything,

  933. giving to God

  934. what is God's

  935. is exactly

  936. what the

  937. Pharisees have

  938. not been

  939. doing.

  940. They have

  941. been playing

  942. religious games.

  943. It's a very

  944. clear warning

  945. for us here

  946. to check

  947. our allegiances.

  948. Jesus.

  949. And so the

  950. Pharisees and

  951. the Rodians,

  952. they have

  953. played their

  954. ace card and

  955. they've been

  956. trumped.

  957. Two groups

  958. have now

  959. confronted Jesus

  960. seeking a

  961. reason to

  962. arrest him.

  963. Both have

  964. walked away

  965. with their

  966. tail between

  967. their legs.

  968. And now it's

  969. time for the

  970. Sadducees to

  971. have a shot.

  972. Not with a

  973. political question

  974. but with a

  975. theologically loaded

  976. question.

  977. And again,

  978. lips just

  979. dripping with

  980. insincerity.

  981. There's a bit

  982. of scoffing

  983. and a bit

  984. of ridicule

  985. thrown in

  986. amongst it

  987. all.

  988. The Sadducees

  989. were a

  990. powerful Jewish

  991. faction.

  992. Mark tells

  993. us in

  994. verse 18

  995. that the

  996. distinctive

  997. doctrine of

  998. the Sadducees

  999. is they

  1000. don't believe

  1001. in the

  1002. resurrection.

  1003. Which is

  1004. why they

  1005. were sad,

  1006. you see.

  1007. They

  1008. some of

  1009. them are

  1010. just getting

  1011. it now.

  1012. It's an

  1013. old one,

  1014. I know,

  1015. but every

  1016. time Sadducees

  1017. are there,

  1018. you've got to

  1019. give it.

  1020. Anyway,

  1021. they basically

  1022. denied the

  1023. spiritual life.

  1024. The Sadducees

  1025. were the most

  1026. conservative group

  1027. in Israel.

  1028. They accepted

  1029. only the

  1030. Old Testament

  1031. law, that

  1032. is the Torah,

  1033. the Pentateuch,

  1034. the first five

  1035. books of the

  1036. Bible.

  1037. They only

  1038. accepted those

  1039. first five

  1040. books as

  1041. the word of

  1042. God.

  1043. They rejected

  1044. everything else.

  1045. They rejected

  1046. the rest of the

  1047. writings of the

  1048. prophets from

  1049. the Old

  1050. Testament.

  1051. And they

  1052. were legalists,

  1053. that is,

  1054. they were

  1055. legalistic about

  1056. the obedience to

  1057. those laws as

  1058. they saw fit.

  1059. But they were

  1060. legal liberalists,

  1061. which means they

  1062. obeyed the bits

  1063. that they believed,

  1064. but the bits that

  1065. they don't believe,

  1066. they basically read

  1067. the Bible with a

  1068. pair of scissors.

  1069. They cut out the

  1070. bits they don't

  1071. like.

  1072. And so

  1073. they were a

  1074. pretty nasty

  1075. bunch of

  1076. people.

  1077. people.

  1078. In fact,

  1079. Josephus,

  1080. who was a

  1081. historian around

  1082. that time,

  1083. who himself was

  1084. a Sadducee,

  1085. said that the

  1086. Sadducees were

  1087. rude, harsh,

  1088. and callous.

  1089. And that was

  1090. just amongst

  1091. themselves,

  1092. with their own

  1093. kind.

  1094. Forget about

  1095. anyone else,

  1096. they just hated

  1097. everyone else.

  1098. So they had a

  1099. pretty bad

  1100. reputation of

  1101. being not nice

  1102. people.

  1103. They weren't

  1104. well regarded in

  1105. the community

  1106. at all.

  1107. And they

  1108. reckon that the

  1109. Old Testament

  1110. law doesn't say

  1111. anything about

  1112. life after death.

  1113. And they come to

  1114. Jesus with a

  1115. hypothetical theological

  1116. situation, a

  1117. ridiculous situation.

  1118. It's an attempt to

  1119. make resurrection

  1120. look ridiculous,

  1121. and in the end

  1122. make Jesus look

  1123. stupid.

  1124. Just suppose,

  1125. they say,

  1126. there are seven

  1127. brothers, and the

  1128. first brother is

  1129. married, he dies,

  1130. and leaves a wife

  1131. with no kids.

  1132. Now Moses says,

  1133. back in

  1134. Deuteronomy,

  1135. that this

  1136. brother, one of

  1137. his other brothers

  1138. is meant to take

  1139. over and marry

  1140. the widow.

  1141. So the second

  1142. brother marries

  1143. her, but he

  1144. dies too.

  1145. And it's the

  1146. same thing for

  1147. the third, the

  1148. fourth, the

  1149. fifth, the

  1150. sixth, the

  1151. seventh brother.

  1152. Kind of like

  1153. seven brides for

  1154. seven brothers

  1155. except the other

  1156. way around,

  1157. sort of.

  1158. And last of

  1159. all, say the

  1160. Sadducees, the

  1161. woman finally

  1162. dies, exhausted

  1163. from seven

  1164. marriages and

  1165. having to put up

  1166. with seven

  1167. husbands.

  1168. So here's the

  1169. question.

  1170. You reckon

  1171. there's going to

  1172. be life after

  1173. death, whose

  1174. wife's she going

  1175. to be in

  1176. heaven?

  1177. What they're

  1178. trying to do is

  1179. they're trying to

  1180. take a central

  1181. theological truth

  1182. and make it look

  1183. so stupid.

  1184. And Jesus, the

  1185. foundation of

  1186. Jesus' answer is

  1187. in verse 24.

  1188. Are you not

  1189. in error?

  1190. Because you do

  1191. not know the

  1192. scriptures or the

  1193. power of God.

  1194. You see, their

  1195. problem had two

  1196. sources, ignorance

  1197. of God's word

  1198. and ignorance

  1199. of God's

  1200. power.

  1201. And I want to

  1202. say that they're

  1203. both, in fact,

  1204. connected.

  1205. In their

  1206. reading of the

  1207. Bible, even

  1208. their bit of the

  1209. Bible, they've

  1210. missed God.

  1211. And in missing

  1212. God, they've

  1213. missed his

  1214. character, they've

  1215. missed his

  1216. power, they've

  1217. missed everything

  1218. that God can do.

  1219. You see, a

  1220. thorough knowledge

  1221. of the word of

  1222. God is the

  1223. only way to

  1224. safeguard us

  1225. from error.

  1226. And yet, these

  1227. guys knew it.

  1228. At least the

  1229. bit they

  1230. accepted.

  1231. Their problem

  1232. was a lack of

  1233. submission to the

  1234. word of God.

  1235. They won't attack

  1236. the Bible with a

  1237. pair of scissors.

  1238. Anything they

  1239. like, get rid

  1240. of.

  1241. And Jesus

  1242. addresses the

  1243. problem of

  1244. their ignorance

  1245. of God's word

  1246. by diving right

  1247. into the very

  1248. heart of the

  1249. Old Testament

  1250. law.

  1251. which they

  1252. claim resurrection

  1253. can't be found.

  1254. And so Jesus

  1255. takes them to

  1256. Exodus 3, one of

  1257. the most famous

  1258. passages in the

  1259. Old Testament,

  1260. where God speaks

  1261. to Moses the

  1262. burning bush, and

  1263. God says to

  1264. Moses, I am the

  1265. God of Abraham,

  1266. the God of

  1267. Isaac, the God

  1268. of Jacob.

  1269. Now you see,

  1270. Abraham, Isaac,

  1271. and Jacob were

  1272. dead hundreds of

  1273. years when God

  1274. said that to

  1275. Moses the

  1276. burning bush.

  1277. And notice he

  1278. doesn't say, I

  1279. was, he doesn't

  1280. say, I used to

  1281. be, he says, I

  1282. am, I am,

  1283. I still am the

  1284. God of Abraham,

  1285. Isaac, and

  1286. Jacob.

  1287. I am still very

  1288. much their God

  1289. because they are

  1290. with me.

  1291. He's not the

  1292. God of the

  1293. dead, he's the

  1294. God of the

  1295. living.

  1296. And in one way

  1297. when he says

  1298. that, he's a

  1299. bit of an

  1300. uppercut to

  1301. these Sadducees,

  1302. I'm the God

  1303. of the living,

  1304. not the dead,

  1305. which is why

  1306. you're not

  1307. accepting me as

  1308. your God because

  1309. you're dead.

  1310. Sort of a bit

  1311. like that, he's

  1312. having a crack at

  1313. them as well.

  1314. So Abraham,

  1315. Isaac, and

  1316. Jacob enjoyed a

  1317. special covenant

  1318. relationship with

  1319. God which was so

  1320. dynamic and so

  1321. profound that it

  1322. demanded a

  1323. continued living

  1324. relationship with

  1325. God after death.

  1326. So Hebrews 11,

    Hebrews 11:10

  1327. verse 10 tells us

  1328. that the patriarchs,

  1329. which are Abraham,

  1330. Isaac, and

  1331. Jacob, knew that

  1332. the covenant

  1333. promises extended

  1334. beyond life in

  1335. this world.

  1336. It says,

  1337. Abraham was

  1338. looking forward

  1339. to the city

  1340. with foundations

  1341. whose architect

  1342. and builder is

  1343. God.

  1344. They were all

  1345. still living by

  1346. faith when they

  1347. died.

  1348. They did not

  1349. receive the

  1350. things promised.

  1351. They only saw

  1352. them and welcomed

  1353. them from a

  1354. distance and they

  1355. admitted that they

  1356. themselves were

  1357. aliens and

  1358. strangers in the

  1359. world.

  1360. And verse 16 of

  1361. Hebrews 11 says

  1362. this,

  1363. Instead, they

  1364. were longing for a

  1365. better country, a

  1366. heavenly one.

  1367. Therefore, God is

  1368. not ashamed to be

  1369. called their God

  1370. for he has

  1371. prepared a city

  1372. for them.

  1373. And that's when

  1374. Jesus comes in with

  1375. his concluding

  1376. thrust.

  1377. He's not the God

  1378. of the dead but

  1379. the living.

  1380. Take that, you

  1381. Sadducees.

  1382. It's right out of

  1383. book two of the

  1384. five books that you

  1385. accept as the word

  1386. of God.

  1387. And that's just one

  1388. example.

  1389. He could have used

  1390. at least half a

  1391. dozen different

  1392. examples.

  1393. What it seems to

  1394. me is that their

  1395. whole reading of

  1396. these five books

  1397. of the Bible,

  1398. their whole law,

  1399. what they accept

  1400. as the word of

  1401. God, in all their

  1402. reading of it, it

  1403. appears that they've

  1404. missed God.

  1405. Completely missed

  1406. God.

  1407. Who is the whole

  1408. point?

  1409. They had read the

  1410. Bible and they had

  1411. judged it, they had

  1412. evaluated it and they

  1413. believed it based on

  1414. what they thought

  1415. their minds were

  1416. reasonable.

  1417. What their minds

  1418. thought was reasonable.

1419. What they had had is

  1420. they gained a whole

  1421. heap of rules in

  1422. order to govern

  1423. their life.

  1424. They had pursued

  1425. some kind of

  1426. moralism.

  1427. But they missed

  1428. God.

  1429. They missed God's

  1430. agenda.

  1431. They missed his

  1432. purpose.

  1433. They missed his

  1434. character.

  1435. They missed his

  1436. miracle working power

  1437. to resurrect the

  1438. dead.

  1439. And in missing

  1440. God, they missed

  1441. life.

1442. That is why I think

  1443. our core value of

  1444. Christ-centered Bible

  1445. saturation is crucial

1446. for us as a church.

  1447. It's not just Bible

  1448. saturation.

  1449. It's not just know

  1450. your Bible.

  1451. It's know the Christ

  1452. of the Bible.

  1453. Because he's the

  1454. point.

  1455. God is the main

  1456. thing.

  1457. We go to the

  1458. scriptures to see

  1459. God and his

  1460. glory, his

  1461. purposes, his

  1462. character, so that

  1463. we would be aligned

  1464. with him.

  1465. And so giving to

  1466. God what he's

  1467. God's is a call to

  1468. total allegiance

  1469. that would flow

  1470. over into every

  1471. aspect of your

  1472. life.

  1473. Clearly it didn't

  1474. for the Pharisees,

  1475. for the Herodians,

  1476. or for the

  1477. Sadducees.

  1478. They had sort of

  1479. packaged their life

  1480. life, so they

  1481. had all these rules

  1482. and it didn't seem

  1483. to impact anything

  1484. relationally.

  1485. Total allegiance

  1486. with God flows

  1487. over into all

  1488. areas of life.

  1489. If you have a

  1490. problem with the

  1491. submission to

  1492. authority, let me

  1493. tell you, it

  1494. flows up to your

  1495. submission to

  1496. Christ.

  1497. It is a reflection

  1498. of your submission to

  1499. Christ.

  1500. They're not

  1501. disconnected.

  1502. And why is this

  1503. allegiance to

  1504. Christ so

  1505. essential?

  1506. Because eternal

  1507. life, resurrected

  1508. life, is not a

  1509. destination, it's a

  1510. person.

  1511. John 17, Jesus

  1512. says this,

  1513. now this is

  1514. eternal life,

  1515. that they may

  1516. know you, this

  1517. is Jesus

  1518. speaking, that

  1519. they may know

  1520. you, God, the

  1521. only true God, and

  1522. Jesus Christ whom

  1523. you have sent.

  1524. You miss Jesus,

  1525. you reject Jesus,

  1526. you ignore Jesus,

  1527. and you reject

  1528. life.

  1529. life.

  1530. To know Jesus is

  1531. to know the

  1532. power of God's

  1533. gift of a

  1534. resurrected life.

  1535. And that is the

  1536. problem with the

  1537. Sadducees.

  1538. They have read the

  1539. Bible, missed God,

  1540. and missed life.

  1541. What is implicit in

  1542. these encounters,

  1543. which will become

  1544. explicit next week,

  1545. in Jesus' last

  1546. encounter,

  1547. is that the

  1548. allegiance God

  1549. requires is not

  1550. a mere obedience

  1551. to a set of

  1552. rules, it's

  1553. not an

  1554. impressive

  1555. religious

  1556. practices,

  1557. but a heart

  1558. that loves God,

  1559. that treasures

  1560. Jesus, treasures

  1561. the Lord Jesus.

  1562. And in the

  1563. very temple

  1564. precincts,

  1565. at the very

  1566. center of the

  1567. religious practices

  1568. of the people

  1569. of God,

  1570. Jesus has

  1571. encounters with

  1572. the leaders of

  1573. the religious

  1574. practices of the

  1575. people of God.

  1576. The leaders of the

  1577. people of God.

  1578. And they have

  1579. their pomp,

  1580. and they have

  1581. their ceremony,

  1582. and they can quote

  1583. the scriptures,

  1584. and they can pray

  1585. impressively,

  1586. and yet they

  1587. reject their

  1588. king.

  1589. Right in the

  1590. very temple

  1591. precincts,

  1592. they reject

  1593. their king.

  1594. The very place

  1595. where you would

  1596. think that

  1597. people would be

  1598. waiting for the

  1599. fulfillment of all

  1600. the promises of

  1601. God, waiting for

  1602. the Messiah to

  1603. come, longing

  1604. for him,

  1605. and he gets

  1606. rejected there.

  1607. So, I want to

  1608. ask you,

  1609. what if these

  1610. encounters that

  1611. Jesus had

  1612. happened on our

  1613. deck,

  1614. straight after

  1615. five o'clock

  1616. congregation?

  1617. Would Jesus

  1618. find hearts and

  1619. lives that

  1620. treasure him?

  1621. Amen.
