  1. All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.

  2. Where's that come from?

  3. Vander?

  4. Prodigal son?

  5. Mary?

  6. Prodigal son?

  7. Luke 15?

  8. All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.

  9. The story of the prodigal son, he's the brother that we often neglect, the one at the end of the story, the firstborn, who measures his relationship with his dad by how well he carries out his orders.

  10. Relationship based on performance.

  11. He knows all about duty and obligation and shoulds and oughts and outwardly he is the obedient son, he is the submissive man, he obeys his dad, he does his jobs, he does all the externals.

  12. And life for him has become slavery, not sonship.

  13. He relates to his dad like a slave, he treats his father like a grudging master and so he measures himself.

  14. And he's got this checklist of what a loving son looks like.

  15. And he doesn't even need to ask his dad what he thinks of him, he can self-assess because he knows that he's not a complete failure of a son like his brother.

  16. It's actually not that different from what we do in our church families when we measure our children's worth by their performance.

  17. Relationship based on performance.

  18. Relationship based on rule keeping.

  19. How we measure up.

  20. His dad offers him freedom and privilege and intimacy.

  21. But the son chooses to live with rules and obligations.

  22. He chooses to live like a slave.

  23. He's the opposite of his brother the prodigal.

  24. The younger brother has lost, he turns around, he comes to his senses,

  25. He turns back and he pursues his dad with absolutely nothing to offer.

  26. He's wasted wealth, he's wasted privilege, he's wasted opportunity.

  27. He is brought low and he returns to his father absolutely empty handed,

  28. prepared to face the music, prepared to live as a slave.

  29. He throws himself on his father's mercy and amazingly his father runs to meet him and welcomes him as a son.

  30. What is relationship with God like for you this morning?

  31. Distant.

  32. Dutiful.

  33. Uncertain.

  34. A set of obligations.

  35. You live what you think is a Christian life because you think that's what God wants you to do.

  36. A master that you fear, one that you dutifully obey.

  37. You go to church, you attend your community group, you give your cash,

  38. you serve in kids' church or music ministry or you visit people in need,

  39. you get Bible training, you get ordained, you do all the externals and you still feel barren inside.

  40. And on the outside, everybody's applauding.

  41. And encouraging.

  42. And on the inside you feel empty and a fraud.

  43. All the right actions.

  44. Jesus speaks to our inner emptiness in the Bible passage that I'm preaching this morning.

  45. Have your Bibles open.

  46. Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  47. Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  48. Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  49. We've preached this short series of messages over the last three weeks from Mark chapter 11 and Mark chapter 12.

Mark 11 chapter mention Mark 12 chapter mention

  50. We've seen that the religious leadership have determined that the easiest way to deal with Jesus,

  51. the Jesus problem, is to kill him.

  52. And so the religious elite have begun to confront Jesus in public,

  53. something they haven't had the guts to do before.

  54. Some ridicule his ministry.

  55. They try to discredit him in the eyes of the people.

  56. Others use all their evil intent to trap him in his words.

  57. They are trying to justify his execution.

  58. And Jesus confounds them with his answers.

  59. And in 1234 their questions dry up and it says,

  60. From then on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  61. But in Mark chapter 12 verse 28,

    Mark 12:28

  62. a teacher in the law of the law questions Jesus.

  63. This is a man that doesn't seem to be part of the posse that's looking to trap him.

  64. He's overheard the debate.

  65. He has heard Jesus give an amazing answer to the Sadducees

  66. and now he steps forward and he asks his own question.

  67. Teacher, of all the commandments, which is the most important?

  68. Now that was a current issue.

  69. The teachers of the law had discerned that 613 laws in the scriptures,

  70. they'd taken the Bible apart, they'd found 613 commandments, laws,

  71. and it was pretty common for them to debate which were the light ones,

  72. which were the heavy ones, what were the big ones,

  73. what were the ones that took precedence over others.

  74. Sort them out for us, Jesus.

  75. Which is the most important?

  76. And I think it's an honest question.

  77. We looked at this in our small group the other night,

  78. the community group the other night,

  79. and I think some of us thought he was a bit condescending of Jesus,

  80. but I actually think it's an honest question.

  81. I think he is one teacher who is checking out another teacher.

  82. And he asks a really important question to figure out

  83. whether Jesus is a teacher who is worth paying any attention to.

  84. And it's like he addresses him as a peer.

  85. And Jesus answers his question with scripture.

  86. Verse 29.

  87. The most important one answered Jesus is this.

  88. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  89. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

  90. and with all your mind and with all your strength.

  91. And the second is this.

  92. Love your neighbour as yourself.

  93. There is no commandment greater than these.

  94. The first part is a direct quote of Moses' words

  95. to the people of Israel in Deuteronomy, chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  96. And he adds a command.

  97. The second command is one from Leviticus, chapter 19.

    Leviticus 19 chapter mention

  98. It's God's command from Leviticus, chapter 19, verse 18.

    Leviticus 19:18

  99. And Jesus pulls the two scriptures together

  100. and he calls them the greatest command.

  101. There is no command greater than these.

  102. And he ties the love of God to the love of neighbour.

  103. He does not let us separate the two.

  104. You cannot say you love God

  105. and hate your brother or sister in Christ.

  106. Absolutely incompatible.

  107. The Deuteronomy quote was never a command of God's.

  108. It's not a command.

  109. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  110. Love the Lord your God with all your heart

  111. and with all your soul and with all your mind

  112. and with all your strength.

  113. It's the climax of Moses' sermon.

  114. He's just reminded them of the Ten Commandments in particular

  115. and he preaches with all the passion of a Billy Graham

  116. and he says to the Israelites,

  117. Yahweh our God, Yahweh is one.

  118. Love him with your entire being,

  119. your heart, your soul, your mind, your strength.

  120. Now the Ten Commandments were given by God

  121. to his people whom he had already redeemed.

  122. They have a history with God.

  123. He saved them out of slavery in Egypt.

  124. God revealed himself to them with his personal name, Yahweh.

  125. He's constantly provided for them

  126. and he's protected them in the desert

  127. and he's continued to involve himself in their lives

  128. despite many moments when they have failed to trust him,

  129. disobeyed him.

  130. And so Moses calls, he exhorts people to walk in the relationship

  131. that they already have with God.

  132. Love him.

  133. Love your neighbours like yourselves.

  134. Now I think love is a really tricky thing to define.

  135. It's not just a feeling

  136. but it will involve feeling and emotion.

  137. It needs to have content.

  138. It will be seen in action.

  139. It's a great little play that's been acted out for us

  140. with Kids Church a minute ago.

  141. No good having words without delivery

  142. doesn't work in a marriage, does it?

  143. We try.

  144. But I want to be very careful this morning

  145. not to reduce love to commandment keeping

  146. because as soon as we do that

  147. it all becomes about measurable performance.

  148. The New Testament does not hold up the commandments

  149. as the attainable goal

  150. or the performance chart.

  151. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  152. Romans chapter 7 verse 10

    Romans 7:10

  153. says to us that the commandment

  154. which was intended to bring life

  155. brought death

  156. and the commandments themselves

  157. show the depth of sin and evil

  158. which was within us

  159. when they are properly understood.

  160. Sin seized the commandment

  161. and brought death.

  162. So when you start measuring performance

  163. it all becomes about externals

  164. and not about the heart.

  165. I want to define love this morning

  166. by saying that it pursues

  167. and values a person.

  168. Love pursues

  169. and values a person.

  170. It chases after relationship.

  171. So in a family

  172. God says

  173. husbands love your wives

  174. and the husband says

  175. I do love you.

  176. I do.

  177. I love you.

  178. I bring home the bacon.

  179. I provide for you.

  180. I've set you up in this great house.

  181. I provide a wonderful standard of living.

  182. And I'm thinking from personal experience

  183. it does not work.

  184. That's not enough.

  185. It's not good enough.

  186. See I can tell you

  187. all the boxes

  188. that I have ticked

  189. from my point of view

  190. in our marriage.

  191. But you ask Kerry

  192. and you're not permitted to

  193. but you ask Kerry

  194. you get a different story.

  195. And my wonderful wife

  196. said to me once

  197. not that far back

  198. a small number of years

  199. you do all these things for me

  200. but I do not feel loved

  201. by you.

  202. And that led to a process

  203. of learning to listen

  204. to her again.

  205. Learning what mattered for her.

  206. Learning what she thinks

  207. and feels.

  208. And I think I'm standing here

  209. this morning

  210. I've got L plates on still.

  211. She was telling me something

  212. the other day

  213. and I stopped listening

  214. in the middle of what she was saying

  215. and I showed that I'd stopped listening

  216. about what she was talking about

  217. because I talked about something

  218. completely different.

  219. And I didn't even notice.

  220. And a few minutes later

  221. she said to me

  222. what had happened

  223. and said that she was hurt

  224. and rightly so.

  225. And I've been arrogant enough

  226. sometimes to presume

  227. that I know

  228. what goes on inside her

  229. and even not to even care

  230. about what goes on inside her.

  231. To care about her hurt.

  232. Or to feel too threatened

  233. to be criticised

  234. for how I've treated her.

  235. So to not want to even

  236. open up the conversation

  237. and talk about it.

  238. And so her love of me

  239. and mine of her

  240. has meant listening

  241. to the hurt

  242. and owning

  243. how I cause it.

  244. I hope that there's not

  245. one wife

  246. sitting here in church

  247. this morning

  248. who goes home

  249. and says to hubby

  250. I hope you were listening.

  251. But I hope husbands

  252. will go home

  253. and ask their wives

  254. if they feel loved.

  255. And listen

  256. without defending.

  257. And maybe doing things

  258. that help to reinvigorate

  259. relationships.

  260. I went to a 60th wedding

  261. anniversary yesterday

  262. and a wonderful couple

  263. who had a

  264. what you have to say

  265. an absolutely steadfast

  266. walk and love of Christ

  267. for 50 of their 60 years

  268. of marriage.

  269. And somebody said

  270. they've had

  271. a perfect marriage.

  272. And the husband

  273. who's in his late 80s now

  274. mid to late 80s

  275. corrected them

  276. and said

  277. they haven't had

  278. a perfect marriage

  279. they've had

  280. a good marriage.

  281. They have pursued

  282. Christ together

  283. since he first

  284. laid his hands

  285. on them.

  286. They have pursued

  287. relationship

  288. with Christ

  289. and they have pursued

  290. relationship

  291. with one another.

  292. They have walked

  293. through some

  294. excruciating moments

  295. in their marriage

  296. bankrupted

  297. by a close relative

  298. late in life

  299. huge health issues

  300. pain with children

  301. and their own

  302. imperfections

  303. a very good marriage

  304. which began

  305. with a blind date

  306. and the blind date

  307. grew to further

  308. time together

  309. and now they have

  310. a rich history

  311. together

  312. which is

  313. longer

  314. than 60 years.

  315. love of God

  316. will be seen

  317. in pursuing

  318. and valuing

  319. God

  320. over all things.

  321. So even the other day

  322. there was something

  323. I thought

  324. God wanted me

  325. to do

  326. and I said

  327. no

  328. what did I say

  329. in that moment?

  330. I'm going to do

  331. what I want to do.

  332. I don't care

  333. what you want me

  334. to do in that moment.

  335. I'm pursuing

  336. my own self

  337. my own objectives

  338. and Moses here

  339. is practically

  340. screaming at the

  341. people of Israel

  342. when he gives this

  343. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  344. chapter 6

  345. look at who God is.

  346. Look at how

  347. he has saved you.

  348. He is the only God

  349. there is no other

  350. love him with all

  351. your heart

  352. and soul

  353. and mind

  354. and strength.

  355. And the teacher

  356. of the law

  357. gets it

  358. and he says

  359. well said teacher

  360. you are right

  361. in saying

  362. that God

  363. is one

  364. there is no other

  365. to love him

  366. with all your heart

  367. and all your

  368. understanding

  369. and all your strength

  370. and to love your

  371. neighbour as yourself

  372. it's more important

  373. than all burnt

  374. offerings

  375. and sacrifices.

  376. He doesn't

  377. actually quote

  378. the commandment

  379. back

  380. he quotes

  381. the intent

  382. of it.

  383. He understands

  384. that God

  385. offers real

  386. relationship

  387. with himself

  388. and he prizes

  389. it above all

  390. the religious

  391. ritual

  392. that they do

  393. at the temple

  394. there is something

  395. greater than

  396. temple sacrifices

  397. and he says

  398. to obey

  399. is better

  400. than sacrifices

  401. he remembers

  402. what Samuel

  403. says to Saul

  404. the whole

  405. temple ritual

  406. pointed to

  407. what a holy

  408. God looked like

  409. but the teacher

  410. of the law

  411. knew that

  412. to know

  413. and love

  414. God

  415. was far

  416. better

  417. than all

  418. the stuff

  419. that pointed

  420. to him.

  421. how absurd

  422. some of the

  423. things that we

  424. argue about

  425. at church

  426. when we argue

  427. about styles

  428. of worship

  429. and types

  430. of music

  431. and looks

  432. of building

  433. and we argue

  434. about those

  435. things as if

  436. those things

  437. in themselves

  438. were ultimate

  439. reality

  440. and don't

  441. think I'm

  442. picking oldies

  443. on this one

  444. I'm picking

  445. young ones

  446. as well

  447. the whole

  448. lot of us

  449. wherever we

  450. sit

  451. they are not

  452. ultimate reality

  453. the Lord

  454. Jesus is

  455. and we

  456. fall out

  457. over these

  458. things at

  459. peril

  460. because Christ

  461. calls us

  462. to love

  463. God

  464. and to

  465. love one

  466. another

  467. above all

  468. those things

  469. it's a

  470. call to

  471. pursue

  472. relationship

  473. with God

  474. and to

  475. pursue

  476. relationship

  477. with one

  478. another

  479. and Jesus

  480. says something

  481. which is

  482. absolutely

  483. wonderful

  484. he says

  485. you are

  486. not far

  487. from the

  488. kingdom

  489. of God

  490. what a

  491. wonderful

  492. thing to

  493. hear from

  494. the mouth

  495. of the

  496. Lord

  497. Jesus

  498. and I

  499. think the

  500. understanding

  501. that he

  502. still requires

  503. is explained

  504. in the next

  505. verses that

  506. Jesus is

  507. the Christ

  508. see verse

  509. 35 while

  510. Jesus was

  511. teaching in

  512. the temple

  513. courts he

  514. asked his

  515. own question

  516. how is it

  517. that the

  518. teachers of

  519. the law

  520. say that

  521. the Christ

  522. is the

  523. son of

  524. David

  525. and the

  526. teachers in

  527. Jesus day

  528. they're teaching

  529. about the

  530. coming king

  531. the messiah

  532. who will be

  533. David's son

  534. David is the

  535. great hero

  536. of the past

  537. he beat all

  538. the enemies

  539. of God

  540. he brought

  541. about peace

  542. and they

  543. look back to

  544. him as this

  545. great one

  546. in the past

  547. and they're

  548. viewing the

  549. king as

  550. somebody who

  551. will be like

  552. him maybe

  553. not as great

  554. as him but

  555. he will defeat

  556. their enemies

  557. he will kick

  558. the Romans

  559. out he will

  560. restore their

  561. glory

  562. it's a little

  563. bit like

  564. Australians

  565. with the

  566. great

  567. it's not

  568. just

  569. Australians

  570. it's the

  571. world cricket

  572. community

  573. when they

  574. look at

  575. the Australian

  576. batsman

  577. Donald

  578. Bradman

  579. every

  580. cricketer in

  581. the world

  582. gets measured

  583. against

  584. Bradman's

  585. achievements

  586. it's

  587. inconceivable

  588. that anybody

  589. could ever be

  590. as good as

  591. him

  592. and so

  593. Jesus quotes

  594. this is how

  595. people thought

  596. about David

  597. it's almost

  598. inconceivable

  599. that anybody

  600. could be as

  601. good as

  602. David

  603. but Jesus

  604. quotes Psalm

  605. 110 and he

  606. asks a riddle

  607. which is designed

  608. to turn their

  609. traditional

  610. understandings on

  611. their head

  612. he says

  613. David himself

  614. speaking by the

  615. Holy Spirit

  616. declared the

  617. Lord said to

  618. my Lord

  619. sit at my

  620. right hand

  621. until I put

  622. your enemies

  623. under your

  624. feet

  625. David himself

  626. calls him

  627. Lord

  628. how then can

  629. he be his

  630. son

  631. and the

  632. crowd

  633. listened to

  634. him

  635. with delight

  636. they loved

  637. him

  638. ripping

  639. into

  640. them

  641. he quotes

  642. David

  643. the great

  644. one

  645. himself

  646. David

  647. recognized

  648. the son

  649. who would

  650. be greater

  651. than him

  652. Bradman

  653. will have

  654. a descendant

  655. who smashes

  656. his records

  657. and will be

  658. greater than

  659. him

  660. a king

  661. is coming

  662. who is much

  663. bigger than

  664. David

  665. he is

  666. David's

  667. Lord

  668. he will

  669. sit at

  670. the right

  671. hand of

  672. God

  673. in heaven

  674. and all

  675. of God's

  676. enemies

  677. will be

  678. subject

  679. to him

  680. and so

  681. Jesus is

  682. not just

  683. a peer

  684. to this

  685. teacher of

  686. the law

  687. he is

  688. God's

  689. king

  690. who will

  691. achieve

  692. God's

  693. end time

  694. purposes

  695. and then

  696. Jesus rounds

  697. off this

  698. body of

  699. teaching

  700. by showing

  701. what love

  702. of God

  703. doesn't

  704. look like

  705. and then

  706. what it

  707. does

  708. look like

  709. watch out

  710. for the

  711. teachers

  712. of the

  713. law

  714. they like

  715. to walk

  716. around in

  717. flowing robes

  718. and be

  719. greeted in

  720. the market

  721. places

  722. they have

  723. the most

  724. important

  725. seats in

  726. the synagogue

  727. and the

  728. places of

  729. honour at

  730. banquets

  731. they devour

  732. widows

  733. houses

  734. and for a

  735. show they

  736. make lengthy

  737. prayers

  738. such men

  739. will be

  740. punished

  741. most severely

  742. I've been

  743. in Christian

  744. ministry long

  745. enough to

  746. know what it

  747. feels like to be

  748. put on a

  749. pedestal and

  750. sometimes it

  751. feels great

  752. because of the

  753. perks that come

  754. with it and

  755. sometimes it

  756. feels absolutely

  757. lousy because

  758. you've been put

  759. in a place you

  760. should never be

  761. the religious

  762. elite have

  763. lost their

  764. heart for

  765. God

  766. they enjoy

  767. the perks

  768. of office

  769. they are

  770. great and

  771. important men

  772. and women

  773. in their

  774. community

  775. they are

  776. prominent

  777. they are

  778. privileged

  779. they stand

  780. head and

  781. shoulders

  782. over everybody

  783. else and

  784. they delight

  785. in it

  786. and Jesus

  787. says watch

  788. out for them

  789. literally turn

  790. your backs

  791. on them

  792. their destiny

  793. is God's

  794. severe punishment

  795. and the

  796. contrast there

  797. they've got

  798. all this stuff

  799. for themselves

  800. but they

  801. devour

  802. widows houses

  803. and then he

  804. turns and

  805. tells us a

  806. story about

  807. a widow

  808. he's watching

  809. people outside

  810. the treasury

  811. putting in

  812. their donations

  813. clang clang

  814. clang go the

  815. big donors

  816. lots of

  817. money

  818. and the

  819. poor widow

  820. comes along

  821. and she

  822. puts two

  823. small copper

  824. coins into

  825. the treasury

  826. chest

  827. unnoticed

  828. probably by

  829. everybody

  830. except Jesus

  831. and he

  832. draws attention

  833. to her

  834. and he

  835. draws it

  836. out and he

  837. says I

  838. tell you the

  839. truth that

  840. this poor

  841. widow

  842. has put

  843. more into

  844. the treasury

  845. than all

  846. the others

  847. they all

  848. gave out of

  849. their wealth

  850. but she

  851. out of

  852. her poverty

  853. put in

  854. everything

  855. all that

  856. she had

  857. to live

  858. on

  859. I've only

  860. ever preached

  861. these words

  862. before in

  863. isolation

  864. and not in

  865. context

  866. we can say

  867. lots of

  868. things about

  869. them with

  870. regard to

  871. giving and

  872. money

  873. and attitude

  874. of heart

  875. that goes

  876. with it

  877. we can

  878. even say

  879. things like

  880. there could

  881. have been

  882. another

  883. widow

  884. there

  885. who put

  886. in two

  887. small copper

  888. coins that

  889. was right

  890. beside the

  891. first one

  892. and as she

  893. put them in

  894. her heart

  895. just grumbled

  896. and complained

  897. about what

  898. she was

  899. doing

  900. that's not

  901. true

  902. but what I'm

  903. trying to draw

  904. out is the

  905. notion that

  906. Jesus noticed

  907. her and

  908. Jesus as

  909. distinct from

  910. everybody else

  911. knew something

  912. that was going

  913. on in her

  914. heart

  915. her heart

  916. in giving

  917. was a

  918. heartfelt

  919. response

  920. to God

  921. and she

  922. gave

  923. everything

  924. love the

  925. Lord your

  926. God with

  927. all your

  928. heart and

  929. soul and

  930. mind and

  931. strength

  932. everything

  933. not noticed

  934. but everything

  935. she gives

  936. all to

  937. Jesus

  938. and she's

  939. such a

  940. contrast to

  941. the religious

  942. leaders whose

  943. love is all

  944. about themselves

  945. and self

  946. indulgence

  947. and self

  948. love

  949. and self

  950. satisfaction

  951. God knows

  952. our heart

  953. even we

  954. can't judge

  955. one another's

  956. hearts

  957. we see a

  958. brother or

  959. sister do

  960. something and

  961. we may well

  962. be really

  963. encouraged by

  964. it and it's

  965. great that we

  966. are and it's

  967. great that we

  968. act in such a

  969. way that people

  970. might be

  971. encouraged

  972. but we really

  973. do not know

  974. one another's

  975. hearts and when

  976. we judge one

  977. another's hearts

  978. we may be

  979. making a

  980. grave mistake

  981. there are

  982. certain things

  983. that we see

  984. and judge that

  985. we ought to

  986. be warned

  987. about but in

  988. terms of

  989. motive God

  990. is the one

  991. who knows

  992. the motives

  993. of our

  994. hearts

  995. I love the

  996. core values

  997. that have

  998. been that

  999. are the core

  1000. values of our

  1001. church family

  1002. I don't know

  1003. if you know

  1004. them all yet

  1005. we talk about

  1006. them reasonably

  1007. often but we

  1008. talk about

  1009. things like

  1010. devotion to

  1011. prayer we

  1012. talk about

  1013. Christ-centered

  1014. bible saturation

  1015. we talk about

  1016. humble authenticity

  1017. treasuring Jesus

  1018. together servant

  1019. leadership radical

  1020. generosity and

  1021. local and global

  1022. impact I love

  1023. them because

  1024. they're relational

  1025. and they are

  1026. driven by a

  1027. heart which

  1028. loves God

  1029. through his

  1030. son the

  1031. Lord Jesus

  1032. Christ

  1033. they're about

  1034. pursuing God

  1035. with all our

  1036. heart and soul

  1037. and mind and

  1038. strength

  1039. there's a

  1040. wrong way of

  1041. holding them

  1042. the wrong way

  1043. of holding

  1044. them is to

  1045. turn them

  1046. into another

  1047. set of

  1048. laws

  1049. you prayed

  1050. today you

  1051. read your

  1052. bible today

  1053. you've been

  1054. honest in your

  1055. dealings with

  1056. people you've

  1057. been to church

  1058. on Sunday

  1059. were at your

  1060. community group

  1061. have you done

  1062. your duty with

  1063. kids church or

  1064. music or whatever

  1065. it is how much

  1066. money have you

  1067. given lately

  1068. that's the wrong

  1069. way

  1070. but these are

  1071. very good

  1072. principles because

  1073. they can be

  1074. held the right

  1075. way they can be

  1076. held by a heart

  1077. that treasures

  1078. Jesus and is

  1079. hungry for Jesus

  1080. that loves to

  1081. speak to Jesus

  1082. in prayer that

  1083. earnestly desires

  1084. to be in the

  1085. word of God so

  1086. that they might

  1087. know more about

  1088. what Jesus and

  1089. God is like that

  1090. they might know

  1091. him

  1092. a heart that

  1093. is not proud

  1094. and prepared

  1095. to humble

  1096. themselves and

  1097. acknowledge their

  1098. own failures and

  1099. their mistakes with

  1100. their brothers and

  1101. sisters a heart

  1102. that treasures being

  1103. together in a

  1104. gathering like this

  1105. when we gather on

  1106. Sunday when we

  1107. meet in our small

  1108. groups our community

  1109. groups through the

  1110. week a heart that

  1111. bleeds for those who

  1112. aren't amongst us

  1113. and wonders where

  1114. they are and

  1115. expresses love and

  1116. concern doesn't just

  1117. say I notice they're

  1118. missing but who

  1119. goes to them and

  1120. says how are you

  1121. brother or sister

  1122. how can I

  1123. encourage you in

  1124. Christ a heart

  1125. that leads as a

  1126. servant not about

1127. who I am but how

  1128. can I honour the

  1129. Lord Jesus in the

1130. way that I relate to

  1131. you and serve this

  1132. church family a

  1133. heart that gives

  1134. generously who sees

  1135. what we that the

  1136. earthly possessions

  1137. that we have our

  1138. money our possessions

  1139. whatever it is as

  1140. given to us as

1141. entrusted by to us by

  1142. God in the first

  1143. place a heart that

  1144. cries out to see

  1145. the gospel of the

  1146. Lord Jesus Christ

  1147. transform men and

  1148. women and boys and

  1149. girls in this

  1150. community in this

  1151. church family and in

  1152. the world beyond

  1153. there is a really

  1154. good way to hold

  1155. the core values of

  1156. St Paul's

  1157. brothers and

  1158. sisters the Lord

  1159. our God the Lord

  1160. is one he has

  1161. revealed himself to

  1162. us in the person

  1163. of the Lord Jesus

  1164. Christ love the

  1165. Lord your God with

  1166. all your heart and

  1167. all your soul with

  1168. all your mind with

  1169. all your strength

  1170. pursue him and love

  1171. your neighbour as

  1172. yourself pursue one

  1173. another in Christ

  1174. Amen

  1175. Amen
