  1. We have, as a church, been spending this month on mission,

  2. and we will end this month with that great missionary text,

  3. Matthew 28, 16 to 20.

  4. This passage of the Bible has moved generations of men,

  5. women, and children to sacrifice their all,

  6. their homes, their careers, their lives,

  7. to take the gospel to the edge of the world and beyond.

  8. And I pray that this passage will do that for us today.

  9. I want to make three simple points from the passage.

  10. The first point is the reason for global mission.

  11. And I want to draw your attention to verse 18.

  12. The reason for global mission.

  13. Jesus came to them, that is the 11,

  14. and said, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  15. It has been said that mission is beggars telling other beggars where to find food.

  16. That is true.

  17. The world is full of needy people, blind people,

  18. destroying themselves.

  19. They are like sheep without a shepherd.

  20. And we ought to have compassion on them.

  21. But the reason for mission given in this passage here

  22. is not simply the needs of the world.

  23. Nor is it simply a command of Jesus.

  24. Since William Carey,

  25. Christians have treated Matthew 28 as the 11th commandment.

  26. Yes, it is true that Jesus gave a commandment to his 11.

  27. But again, the reason for global mission given here by Jesus is very different.

  28. Please have a look again at verse 28.

  29. Jesus says,

  30. All authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  31. The reason for the disciples of Jesus going into the world to proclaim the gospel

  32. is that Jesus is Lord.

  33. The Old Testament has promised that God will one day send his special king to establish his kingdom.

  34. He is the son of David.

  35. In Daniel 7, we see a picture painted of this coming king.

  36. When he comes, all authority on heaven and on earth will be given to him.

  37. And at the resurrection of Jesus, this has now happened.

  38. The greatest missionary passage in the Bible is ultimately not about mission.

  39. Or church.

  40. Or money.

  41. Ultimately, the greatest missionary passage in the Bible is about Jesus.

  42. Jesus is the reason for global mission.

  43. For he is worthy of all our glory and honour and power.

  44. If global mission were about the needs of our neighbours,

  45. we can always find a greater need than theirs.

  46. The church in Cheswood is shrinking.

  47. But the church in Africa is growing.

  48. Logically, why would we give to Africa when we can give here?

  49. When the need seems to be greater.

  50. But, if our focus is on the honour of Jesus,

  51. then we will not find one worthier of our glory, honour, or our money, or our lives.

  52. I have told a story of Helen Roosevelt before,

  53. but her testimony is so great and worthy that we should hear it again.

  54. Roosevelt was a doctor working in the Congo in the 1950s.

  55. She worked with orphans.

  56. She started a camp for orphans with leprosy.

  57. A godly, gracious, compassionate woman

  58. with a quiet, gentle spirit.

  59. A woman of God.

  60. In the 1960s, there was political unrest.

  61. A revolution.

  62. Most Western missionaries left.

  63. But Helen Roosevelt stayed, along with a few others.

  64. She couldn't leave the people behind,

  65. and trusting herself to God.

  66. In that period, at least 27 missionaries were killed.

  67. Helen Roosevelt herself was captured by the rebels.

  68. She was beaten, kicked, and brutally raped.

  69. Finally, she was rescued by mercenary soldiers

  70. and returned to Britain for recovery.

  71. She was asked a tough question by a TV interviewer.

  72. And that was the question,

  73. Was it worth it?

  74. The suffering and all that you went through,

  75. was it worth it?

  76. And she replied,

  77. The question is not whether it is worth it.

  78. The question is,

  79. Is God worthy?

  80. And the answer is yes.

  81. He is worthy.

  82. A hundred percent worthy.

  83. He is worthy of all that we can offer up and more.

  84. After 14 months of treatment in England,

  85. she returned to the Congo to help rebuild the nation.

  86. What is worthy to give up your life for?

  87. To sacrifice everything for?

  88. The reason for mission.

  89. Secondly, the content of global mission.

  90. Verses 19 to 20.

  91. Therefore,

  92. go and make disciples of all nations,

  93. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  94. and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  95. and teaching them to obey everything

  96. I have commanded you.

  97. The content of mission.

  98. Because Jesus is Lord,

  99. what are his disciples to do?

  100. They are,

  101. verses 19 to 20,

  102. they are to make disciples of the nations.

  103. Global mission is discipleship.

  104. Well, how do we make disciples?

  105. Two things are highlighted.

  106. Firstly,

  107. baptism,

  108. which is what we'll be doing later on.

  109. But strictly speaking,

  110. the baptism here is not the baptism

  111. that we will be doing with water later on today.

  112. What we will do later with the water

  113. is a symbol of what Jesus is talking about here.

  114. Here,

  115. to baptize,

  116. I believe,

  117. means to bring into relationship

  118. with someone

  119. under the authority of.

  120. And what,

  121. this is why,

  122. sorry,

  123. this is why the nations are to be baptized into.

  124. So the proposition is into.

  125. To bring into a relationship.

  126. Into what relationship?

  127. Into who?

  128. To have relationship.

  129. The nations are to be brought into a relationship

  130. with God who is Father,

  131. Son,

  132. and Spirit.

  133. It is a reminder to us that

  134. the God of the Bible

  135. is not the force,

  136. but personal.

  137. He is Father.

  138. God is also Son.

  139. God is a reminder to us

  140. that we cannot save ourselves from our sins.

  141. We need someone else

  142. to save us from our sins.

  143. It's also a reminder

  144. that God is Spirit.

  145. That you cannot be in a relationship with this God

  146. by trying harder

  147. to be a better person.

  148. You need to be born again.

  149. Our friends today

  150. will be baptized by water later.

  151. The ceremony symbolizes

  152. that they have entered

  153. into a relationship

  154. or under the authority

  155. of this God.

  156. Secondly,

  157. discipleship involves

  158. teaching

  159. and by implication,

  160. learning.

  161. It is, first of all,

  162. an intellectual exercise.

  163. Discipleship involves

  164. the changing of the mind.

  165. In Matthew,

  166. if you read through the Gospel,

  167. you will see that Jesus

  168. has spoken a great deal

  169. about discipleship.

  170. So, Sermon on the Mount.

  171. Christian disciples

  172. have a righteousness

  173. greater than the hypocrites.

  174. Christian disciples

  175. do not do religion

  176. for show.

  177. We are faithful

  178. in our marriage.

  179. We are people

  180. of our word.

  181. We love

  182. even our enemies.

  183. Like Helen Roosevelt.

  184. We are not preoccupied

  185. by the worries

  186. and anxieties

  187. of this life.

  188. Our greatest ambition

  189. is Jesus

  190. and his kingdom.

  191. If you go to Matthew 16,

  192. 24 to 26,

  193. this is what Jesus says.

  194. If I can tap that,

  195. 16.

  196. Jesus said to his disciples,

  197. discipleship,

  198. if anyone would come

  199. after me,

  200. he must deny himself

  201. and take up his cross

  202. and follow me.

  203. For whoever wants

  204. to save his life

  205. will lose it.

  206. But whoever loses

  207. his life for me

  208. will find it.

  209. What good will it be

  210. for a man

  211. if he gains

  212. the whole world

  213. yet forfeits his soul?

  214. Or what can a man

  215. give in exchange

  216. for his soul?

  217. Discipleship

  218. involves

  219. Jesus.

  220. This is a disciple

  221. of Jesus.

  222. Jesus is everything

  223. to this disciple.

  224. Global mission

  225. is discipleship.

  226. You cannot disciple

  227. the nations

  228. unless, of course,

  229. you yourself

  230. are a disciple

  231. of Jesus.

  232. You cannot call

  233. other people

  234. to give up

  235. everything for Jesus

  236. if you yourself

  237. are not doing it.

  238. The reason for mission,

  239. the content of mission,

  240. and lastly,

  241. the promise of mission.

  242. Verse 20.

  243. Jesus says,

  244. go into the world

  245. to make disciples

  246. and surely

  247. I am with you

  248. always

  249. to the very end

  250. of the age.

  251. The promise

  252. is the presence

  253. of Jesus.

  254. We need to remember

  255. that global mission

  256. is Jesus' mission.

  257. It has always been

  258. and it will always be.

  259. Jesus continues

  260. to be at work

  261. in the world today,

  262. saving it.

  263. The reason for mission,

  264. the content for mission,

  265. and the promise

  266. of mission.

  267. When I started,

  268. I invited you

  269. to consider,

  270. to think about

  271. what would be

  272. the content

  273. of your final letter

  274. or your final tweet.

  275. I wonder

  276. what you wrote

  277. or if you didn't write

  278. what you had in mind.

  279. I think that

  280. what you write

  281. tells a lot

  282. about what's

  283. important to you,

  284. who you are

  285. as a person,

  286. and what you want

  287. the people

  288. after you

  289. to remember you by.

  290. I want to tell you

  291. about Karen Watson.

  292. She was an

  293. international board

  294. missionary.

  295. On 15th of March,

  296. 2004,

  297. she was killed

  298. in Iraq.

  299. Karen was 38.

  300. She had been

  301. a Christian

  302. for only

  303. eight years.

  304. She loved

  305. the word of God

  306. and the work of God

  307. with a great passion.

  308. This is what

  309. she wrote

  310. as her last letter.

  311. Dear Pastor,

  312. you should only

  313. be opening

  314. this letter

  315. in the event

  316. of my death.

  317. When God calls,

  318. there are no regrets.

  319. I try to share

  320. my heart with you

  321. as much as possible.

  322. My heart

  323. for donations.

  324. I wasn't

  325. called to a place.

  326. I was called

  327. to Him.

  328. To obey

  329. was my objective.

  330. To suffer

  331. was expected.

  332. His glory

  333. my reward.

  334. The missionary

  335. heart

  336. cares more

  337. than some

  338. think is wise,

  339. risks more

  340. than some

  341. think is safe,

  342. dreams more

  343. than some

  344. think is practical,

  345. expects more

  346. than some

  347. think is possible.

  348. I was

  349. called

  350. not to comfort

  351. or to success,

  352. but to obedience.

  353. There is no joy

  354. outside of knowing

  355. Jesus

  356. and serving

  357. Him.

  358. I love you

  359. and my church

  360. family.

  361. In His care,

  362. salaam,

  363. Karen.

  364. What you wrote,

  365. what you intend

  366. to write

  367. in your last letter

  368. says a lot

  369. about you.

  370. What is important

  371. to you?

  372. What you would hold

  373. of the greatest value?

  374. I wonder

  375. what you wrote.

  376. C.T.

  377. Stutt wrote,

  378. Nail the colors

  379. to the mask.

  380. That is the right

  381. thing to do

  382. and therefore

  383. that is what

  384. we must do

  385. and do it now.

  386. The evangelization

  387. of all

  388. that are

  389. un-evangelized.

  390. Christ

  391. wants not

  392. nibblers

  393. of the possible,

  394. but grabbers

  395. of the impossible.

  396. Is there

  397. a war

  398. in our path?

  399. By our

  400. God

  401. we will

  402. leap over it.

  403. Are there

  404. lions

  405. and scorpions

  406. in our way?

  407. We will

  408. trample them

  409. under our feet.

  410. Does a mountain

  411. bar our

  412. progress?

  413. saying,

  414. Be thou

  415. cast

  416. into the sea.

  417. We will

  418. march on,

  419. soldiers

  420. of Jesus.

  421. Never

  422. surrender.

  423. Nail the

  424. colors

  425. to the

  426. mask.

  427. We have

  428. been talking

  429. about

  430. global

  431. mission.

  432. Sorry,

  433. this isn't

  434. translated.

  435. It's easy

  436. to talk.

  437. If you

  438. are a

  439. follower

  440. of Jesus,

  441. then you

  442. have been

  443. called

  444. to be

  445. part of

  446. this

  447. mission.

  448. And

  449. rather than

  450. just

  451. talk,

  452. I want

  453. to invite

  454. you,

  455. if you

  456. are a

  457. follower

  458. of Jesus,

  459. to nail

  460. your

  461. color to

  462. the

  463. mask.

  464. So again,

  465. this is

  466. very

  467. confronting.

  468. But if

  469. you're not

  470. prepared to

  471. do it

  472. here today,

  473. then perhaps

  474. you're not

  475. prepared to

  476. do it at

  477. all.

  478. I'm going

  479. to invite

  480. you to

  481. nail

  482. the

  483. color

  484. of,

  485. sorry,

  486. your

  487. color

  488. to the

  489. mask,

  490. not in

  491. the

  492. safety

  493. of your

  494. privacy,

  495. but to

  496. do it

  497. in

  498. public.

  499. What I

  500. want to

  501. do is

  502. Jesus

  503. has issued

  504. you a

  505. call to

  506. follow him,

  507. to deny

  508. yourself,

  509. to give

  510. your life.

  511. To be

  512. part of

  513. this

  514. global

  515. mission.

  516. If you

  517. are prepared

  518. to follow

  519. him,

  520. I want

  521. to invite

  522. you to

  523. nail

  524. your

  525. color

  526. to

  527. the

  528. mask.

  529. That is

  530. to stand

  531. with me,

  532. to ask

  533. God to

  534. take you

  535. and to

  536. use you

  537. to send

  538. you wherever

  539. he may.

  540. Right?

  541. If you

  542. prepare to

  543. do that,

  544. I want

  545. to invite

  546. you to

  547. stand now

  548. and as

  549. you stand,

  550. I'm going

  551. to invite

  552. you to

  553. pray with

  554. me a

  555. prayer.

  556. So if

  557. you are a

  558. follower of

  559. Jesus and

  560. you're ready

  561. to take

  562. on the

  563. world,

  564. with me.

  565. I'm going

  566. to invite

  567. you to

  568. say this

  569. prayer in

  570. your heart.

  571. If you

  572. prepare to

  573. do this,

  574. the prayer

  575. should be

  576. projected.

  577. Don't pray

  578. it lightly

  579. because God

  580. might answer

  581. you.

  582. All right?

  583. Let us

  584. pray.

  585. Dear Lord

  586. Jesus,

  587. I give

  588. myself to

  589. you,

  590. whatever the

  591. cost may

  592. be.

  593. Take every

  594. aspect of

  595. my life

  596. and use

  597. me for

  598. your kingdom

  599. to glorify

  600. your name.

  601. I desire

  602. to become

  603. a person

  604. who understands

  605. and lives

  606. and reverent

  607. free all

  608. of you.

  609. I'll do

  610. anything that

  611. you want me

  612. to do,

  613. go anywhere

  614. that you want

  615. me to go,

  616. and say

  617. anything you

  618. want me to

  619. say.

  620. I trust

  621. you,

  622. Lord,

  623. to do that

  624. which I

  625. cannot do

  626. for myself.

  627. Teach me,

  628. guide me,

  629. and empower

  630. me to

  631. feed your

  632. name.

  633. For the

  634. sake of

  635. your name,

  636. I pray.

  637. Amen.
