  1. I've just written a paper that is going to go on the Youth Surge website.

  2. I hope that you know that there's a Youth Surge website.

  3. It's called youthsurge.com.au.

  4. I have a website in America called effectiveyouthministry.com.

  5. It's not effectiveym.com.

  6. Be careful.

  7. They're the speed water into a bucket guys and smack each other with all the newspaper.

  8. Effectiveyouthministry.com, where I every week just post youth ministry thoughts.

  9. They're designed for the leadership team to download, read, and discuss.

  10. And there's going to be a long paper.

  11. I'm giving it in Melbourne at this conference on, you know,

  12. do we think pragmatically in youth ministry or do we think theologically?

  13. And so you've got to really think through that because the Americans are pragmatists.

  14. The Americans say, how do we get kids in the door?

  15. That's what they think.

  16. That's not a theological way to think.

  17. It's not an Australian way to think.

  18. We want to think, what does God want us to do?

  19. That's way more important.

  20. So let's think theologically.

  21. Let's think with our Bibles open.

  22. Now, if this was a 40-hour class, we'd spend a whole bunch of time in the Bible.

  23. And so, unfortunately, I've got to rush through some really good God stuff,

  24. which is frustrating for all of us.

  25. But here is a key passage.

  26. To me, this is a central passage in thinking through youth ministry.

  27. It's well known.

  28. 1 Corinthians 3.

  29. And God says here, Paul says here,

  30. By the grace God gives me,

  31. I laid a foundation as an expert building in somebody else's building.

  32. Paul goes to Corinth.

  33. He does evangelism.

  34. People become Christians and he leaves.

  35. So he was the expert builder.

  36. And he built this church.

  37. And he says,

  38. But each one should be careful how he builds.

  39. For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

  40. So it's all about Jesus.

  41. That's why we're doing it.

  42. You're preaching Jesus, teaching Jesus,

  43. helping people to love Jesus,

  44. helping people to love each other because of Jesus.

  45. The whole thing is about Jesus.

  46. If any man builds on this foundation,

  47. he's in gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, and straw.

  48. His work will be shown for what it is

  49. because the day will bring it to light.

  50. You're building a house.

  51. Paul says you've got two piles.

  52. Gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, and straw.

  53. Now be clear on this.

  54. In that culture,

  55. you are not going to build a house with gold, silver, costly stones.

  56. It's absurd.

  57. You're going to build a house with wood, hay, or straw.

  58. Like today.

  59. And so Paul says be careful

  60. because there's some really obvious stuff to build with

  61. and it's the wrong stuff.

  62. There's other stuff to build

  63. that you may not even occur to you to build with.

  64. But that's what you're going to build with

  65. because you're actually building a temple.

  66. And you don't build a temple with just straw.

  67. You build a temple with gold.

  68. And so he says,

  69. if anything builds on this foundation with these things,

  70. his work will be shown.

  71. The day will bring it to light.

  72. That's the day of judgment.

  73. It will be revealed with fire.

  74. And the fire will test the quality of each man's work.

  75. So God is going to send the judgment fires on our youth ministries.

  76. So I was with these two awesome ladies for six years at Oakhurst.

  77. Just a tremendous blessing in my life.

  78. I learned so much about youth ministry at Oakhurst.

  79. It was the most fruitful time in my life

  80. for thinking and writing and strategizing

  81. for all sorts of great reasons.

  82. And I'm obviously a lot older than them.

  83. And I'm going to die.

  84. I'm going to go to heaven.

  85. And I think what this passage is saying

  86. is that in some weird way,

  87. God is going to bring my youth group to heaven.

  88. And in my judgment,

  89. I'm going to be surrounded by these youth group kids.

  90. Lonnie's going to be there.

  91. Siara's going to be there.

  92. I don't know how it's going to work.

  93. It's kind of weird.

  94. But suddenly God is going to test them.

  95. And if they stand, I stand.

  96. If they are burned up, I suffer loss.

  97. Verse 15.

  98. He's going to test the quality of each man's work.

  99. If what he's built survives, he receives reward.

  100. If it's burned up, he will suffer loss.

  101. He himself will be saved,

  102. but only as one escaping through the flames.

  103. I'm going to go to heaven no matter what

  104. because I trust in Jesus.

  105. Jesus has taken my sins.

  106. But if I've run this youth group called, you know,

  107. Spew Squad,

  108. and we've just covered ourselves with marshmallows

  109. every week,

  110. and we've done weird things with toothpicks.

  111. By the way, if it involves a toothpick,

  112. you don't do it in youth ministry.

  113. It's a rule.

  114. Eggs, shaving cream, toothpicks at all costs.

  115. We try to toothpick thing in youth group.

  116. Even though we've been in youth ministry 30 years,

  117. just a few months ago, it was dreadful.

  118. And that was the same night we tried memory verse tennis,

  119. where you had to hit and say the memory verse.

  120. We thought it was such a good idea.

  121. You know when it's death from the minute the activity starts?

  122. And we're like, oh, this is awful.

  123. So even in 30 years, we still get it wrong.

  124. Anyway, I'll still be saved,

  125. but only there's one escaping.

  126. Now this passage, man,

  127. it revolves on those nine words.

  128. Two, four, six, eight, nine.

  129. Be careful.

  130. Be careful.

  131. When you buy a youth ministry book,

  132. be careful.

  133. When you read my stuff,

  134. be careful.

  135. When you put a program together,

  136. be careful.

  137. Because you are building on Jesus,

  138. you're building God's temple.

  139. Are you using gold?

  140. So here's one simple barometer for your youth group.

  141. Something I've learned in a long time.

  142. Does your youth group pray?

  143. If your youth group prays,

  144. that's a really good barometer for your youth ministry.

  145. If I come to your youth group,

  146. and you open with prayer,

  147. and there's a prayer time involved,

  148. and when the leader says,

  149. hey guys, we're going to pray,

  150. what can we pray for?

  151. And kids say,

  152. could we pray for whatever?

  153. That is a real sign of health.

  154. And that says to me

  155. that there's a real serious building with gold here.

  156. When you say to your youth group,

  157. okay, grab your Bibles.

  158. So I was at the youth group here last night,

  159. and one of the leaders who's here said,

  160. okay, everybody get a Bible.

  161. What did the kids do?

  162. They all went and got a Bible.

  163. Okay, we're going to turn to Mark 14.

  164. They open up to Mark 14.

  165. That is a real sign of gold

  166. being woven and built,

  167. and this program is just,

  168. oh, I think, fantastic.

  169. That's a healthy barometer.

  170. When do the kids groan?

  171. Oh, that's a real indicator

  172. that something's,

  173. okay, we're going to play a game now

  174. if they go, oh,

  175. they're saying something.

  176. Or if you say, hey,

  177. we're going to have a prayer time now

  178. and if the kids go, oh,

  179. we want to keep playing the game,

  180. that's a real sign.

  181. So Paul says, build with gold.

  182. Build with gold.

  183. Now here's another one.

  184. This to me is just a fantastic passage.

  185. You know it.

  186. It's a real famous passage.

  187. It's at the end of Acts 2.

  188. Luke, the historian,

  189. gives us kind of a summary passage.

  190. He does it a few times

  191. in the book of Acts.

  192. And he says,

  193. just to sum up this wacko,

  194. amazing, fantastic time

  195. in the early church

  196. where there was Pentecost

  197. and all this outpouring

  198. of the Holy Spirit

  199. and thousands of people

  200. became Christians

  201. and it was just amazing.

  202. He sums it up by saying,

  203. this stuff.

  204. Template.

  205. You are looking at a template

  206. for youth ministry.

  207. Right there.

  208. Notice what they were.

  209. They were devoted

  210. to Bible study.

  211. They were devoted

  212. to fellowship.

  213. The word there is

  214. koinonia or koinonia.

  215. We have cheapened

  216. the word fellowship

  217. in youth ministry.

  218. We have,

  219. what people do culturally

  220. is they take a really good word

  221. and they hijack it.

  222. The word gay,

  223. it's a really good word.

  224. Like it's rich in meaning

  225. but you can't say it anymore.

  226. It's been twisted.

  227. And we've done

  228. a similar thing

  229. with fellowship.

  230. We call things fellowship

  231. that aren't fellowship.

  232. Fellowship is relating

  233. to a person

  234. because of the cross of Christ.

  235. So I am deep friends

  236. with Ciara

  237. not because we just connect

  238. and we like the same stuff

  239. and we just personality-wise

  240. get along.

  241. That's true.

  242. But it's because

  243. of the cross of Christ.

  244. I relate to her

  245. through Jesus

  246. which means

  247. much more deep.

  248. I'm going to care for her.

  249. I'm going to love her.

  250. I'm going to be with her,

  251. mourn when she's mourning,

  252. rejoice when she's rejoicing.

  253. I'm going to admonish her.

  254. I'm going to rebuke her.

  255. I'm going to warn her.

  256. I'm going to study the Bible with her.

  257. It's this awesome term.

  258. That's fellowship.

  259. That's what they were devoted to.

  260. They were devoted to

  261. possibly communion,

  262. possibly meals.

  263. People disagree.

  264. And they were devoted to prayer.

  265. Wow, what a great

  266. youth group image right there.

  267. Everybody looks in and says,

  268. woo, amazing.

  269. And the apostles were doing

  270. great stuff.

  271. People getting healed.

  272. They spent a lot of time together.

  273. Notice that in verse 44.

  274. They had a lot of commonality together.

  275. People kind of wrestle with that.

  276. What does it mean?

  277. Does it mean physical stuff?

  278. Does it mean attitudinally?

  279. Does it mean doctrinally?

  280. I think it means they were thinking

  281. of one mind and spirit.

  282. And they, verse 45,

  283. they shared their stuff.

  284. Generosity.

  285. They met a lot.

  286. Verse 46.

  287. Big group, small group.

  288. Big group in the temple courts,

  289. small group eating together in the homes.

  290. They spent a lot of time praising God.

  291. People looked in and said,

  292. you guys are awesome right here.

  293. And they grew.

  294. Amazing passage.

  295. Amazing passage.

  296. And so I look at that and I say,

  297. okay, that informs my thinking

  298. in what I want to do.

  299. That is a list of activities.

  300. It's not a list of doctrines.

  301. I must believe that Jesus is X.

  302. That's really good.

  303. I love doctrine.

  304. I'm a doctrine guy.

  305. But this is a list of activities.

  306. So I read that and I think,

  307. okay, if I do that,

  308. I'm building with gold.

  309. And I want to think theologically.

  310. And I want to take those activities

  311. and put them into place in my youth group.

  312. And so how do I do that?

  313. That's the question.

  314. That's where we're going right now.

  315. So I'm going to build my youth program

  316. on three pillars.

  317. So those of you who need a model of youth ministry,

  318. here it comes.

  319. For those of you who know my stuff,

  320. this is a little bit,

  321. I'm taking build, reach, and flow.

  322. If you don't know what I'm talking about,

  323. don't worry about it.

  324. I'm taking build, reach, and flow

  325. and I'm trying to work it a little bit,

  326. make it a little bit thicker.

  327. So build, reach, and flow fits into this.

  328. We're not going to talk much about build, reach, and flow today.

  329. You can read about it.

  330. But I want to build my house on three pillars.

  331. And this is real obvious stuff,

  332. but I'm telling you,

  333. the more I think about it,

  334. I think it changes everything.

  335. I think it changes everything.

  336. Our pillar number one is we're a Christian youth group.

  337. When I came to Australia,

  338. I immediately fell in love with Australia.

  339. It changed my life.

  340. But I didn't get Australia.

  341. I didn't get Australia until I got cricket.

  342. I won't bore you with the story,

  343. but it was during beach mission season.

  344. All my friends had gone.

  345. I was going so insane

  346. that I turned on Channel 9 and watched the cricket.

  347. For an American, that's insanity.

  348. And over the course of five days,

  349. and a lot of phone calls,

  350. what's a Googly, what's a Yorker,

  351. you know,

  352. everything opened up.

  353. I understood so much about Australia

  354. that just led to a whole bunch of thinking

  355. and led to quite a deep desire

  356. for me to become an Australian.

  357. Now I'm trying to wrestle with hockey.

  358. Hockey's a really weird sport.

  359. I don't get it.

  360. Like, you lose your teeth when you play.

  361. It just seems like,

  362. welcome to the hockey team,

  363. you won't be needing those anymore.

  364. LAUGHTER

  365. But our college has a gym.

  366. It's in a balcony.

  367. I'm doing the elliptical

  368. because I'm really not good

  369. at anything else these days.

  370. If it involves a heavy object, forget it.

  371. So I just do this.

  372. Woo!

  373. And I watch the hockey

  374. because every institution in Australia

  375. has to have a hockey rink,

  376. in Canada,

  377. has to have a hockey rink.

  378. So I'm watching hockey.

  379. And then there'll be a hockey match.

  380. And I'm watching the parents.

  381. And I'm watching the coach.

  382. Now I don't know if you know hockey.

  383. I never knew this.

  384. But the team doesn't stay out

  385. for longer than 90 seconds.

  386. So you have four guys race out.

  387. And it's so fast

  388. that they hyperventilate.

  389. And they come back in

  390. and four more guys goes out.

  391. And they have four sets of four guys.

  392. Is that right, Josh?

  393. It's four sets.

  394. Five sets of four guys.

  395. Four sets of five guys.

  396. Four sets of five guys.

  397. Who go out.

  398. And I never pick that up.

  399. And so I'm watching it.

  400. Now what I'm watching

  401. is a brutal, sweaty, hard sport.

  402. That's what I'm watching.

  403. And the parents are into it.

  404. And the kids,

  405. they sit in this bench thing

  406. right next to the ice.

  407. And they just lean up.

  408. And whenever something good happens,

  409. they pound on the thing.

  410. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.

  411. And they're eager to go out.

  412. And I think,

  413. here's a group of young people

  414. who are really committed

  415. to something that's sweaty,

  416. uncomfortable, toothless.

  417. Other parts of your anatomy

  418. will take a puck.

  419. And so it's like,

  420. oh, this is bizarre.

  421. So I think, okay.

  422. I have a nephew.

  423. I take my nephew to hockey.

  424. And I say,

  425. hello, hockey coach.

  426. My nephew's a little bit

  427. interested in hockey.

  428. Hockey coach says,

  429. great.

  430. We'd love to have him.

  431. And I say,

  432. yeah, but I don't think

  433. he wants to afford hockey.

  434. I don't know.

  435. I think he's a bit scared.

  436. Could you play some games

  437. that don't have anything

  438. to do with hockey

  439. to kind of ease them

  440. into hockey?

  441. Like, could you play

  442. Honey, If You Love Me,

  443. Smile?

  444. Even though I know

  445. you guys can't smile.

  446. What would the coach do?

  447. What would the coach do

  448. if I said to him,

  449. can you do things

  450. other than hockey

  451. to be attractive

  452. to the non-hockey player?

  453. It is an unknown concept

  454. to hockey players.

  455. Now, I hope you're tracking

  456. with me because

  457. this is super important.

  458. Think glee club.

  459. Don't think glee club.

  460. Think chess club.

  461. By the way,

  462. you know that glee clubs

  463. sing glees?

  464. That's why they're called

  465. glee clubs.

  466. I never knew that.

  467. Anyway,

  468. it comes from the 1700s.

  469. If I go to a chess club,

  470. which, by the way,

  471. you will never see me

  472. in a chess club.

  473. I'm not knocking

  474. those of you

  475. who are in chess clubs.

  476. I'm just...

  477. But if I go to a chess club,

  478. I'm not going to expect

  479. to do a lot of things

  480. other than play chess,

  481. get thicker glasses

  482. and a calculator

  483. in my front pocket.

  484. Just joking.

  485. I'm going to expect

  486. to play chess.

  487. If a chess club

  488. wants to grow numerically,

  489. what are they going to do?

  490. They're going to play chess.

  491. It wouldn't even occur

  492. to them to say,

  493. let's do non-chess activities

  494. to grow.

  495. Wouldn't even occur to them.

  496. Okay, let's keep going.

  497. So what I want to think through

  498. is we're a Christian group.

  499. That is who we are.

  500. We are unashamedly

  501. marked by our love

  502. for Jesus Christ.

  503. There will be people

  504. who don't want to join us.

  505. There were people

  506. who didn't want

  507. to follow Jesus.

  508. There were people

  509. that Jesus healed

  510. that didn't follow Jesus.

  511. It's mind-boggling.

  512. I can't figure that out.

  513. Why would you not

  514. want to follow Jesus?

  515. Didn't want to.

  516. Didn't want to.

  517. And so there's going to be

  518. a whole market share

  519. that just quite frankly

  520. doesn't want to be Christian,

  521. doesn't want to follow us.

  522. But we are going to be

  523. a Christian youth group.

  524. And that's going to be

  525. what marks us.

  526. It's going to be

  527. really, really obvious.

  528. That's our first pillar.

  529. And there's a whole bunch

  530. of Bible passages

  531. we can look at,

  532. but we looked at this

  533. 2 Peter one

  534. we kind of looked at

  535. a few minutes ago.

  536. That's who we are.

  537. And one really weird turn

  538. the church did

  539. was to follow Willow Creek

  540. and go down

  541. the Seeker Sensitive Mall.

  542. That was such a weird,

  543. for those of you

  544. who are a bit older,

  545. that was such a weird turn

  546. for us to do.

  547. We're going to start

  548. doing non-Christian activities

  549. to attract non-Christians.

  550. Doesn't make any sense.

  551. And Willow Creek,

  552. as many of you know,

  553. has now said,

  554. we don't do that anymore.

  555. And so we need to be saying,

  556. well, we never did.

  557. So we need to be

  558. following along with it.

  559. So that's our first pillar.

  560. Hockey group,

  561. glee club,

  562. choir,

  563. chess group,

  564. Christian youth group.

  565. And in this new

  566. post-millennial world

  567. where kids clearly want

  568. integrity and transparency

  569. and they want to know

  570. what will I get

  571. if I join this?

  572. What is this all about?

  573. Because I'm so busy

  574. and I've got so many

  575. good options

  576. that I need to figure out

  577. whether this is a valid

  578. thing for me to give

  579. my time and my money to.

  580. That's our strength.

  581. It's not our weakness.

  582. Our strength is to say,

  583. we are a place

  584. that will connect you

  585. with the creator

  586. of the universe.

  587. And we are a place

  588. that just knows Jesus

  589. intimately and loves him.

  590. Oh, where did that come from?

  591. Okay, now we have

  592. a second pillar.

  593. And our second pillar

  594. is this.

  595. We do Christian things.

  596. Real obvious.

  597. Why do we do

  598. Christian things?

  599. Because we're

  600. Christian youth group.

  601. That's why.

  602. You come to this club,

  603. to this group,

  604. we are unashamedly Christian.

  605. And we pursue

  606. spiritual disciplines.

  607. Now for those of you

  608. who are kind of

  609. like to think a bit deeper,

  610. I'm really wrestling

  611. with some terms.

  612. And I think where I'm going

  613. in the future

  614. is pillar number one

  615. is ontos.

  616. It's who we are.

  617. Pillar number two

  618. is pneumaticos.

  619. We are spiritual.

  620. And that means

  621. we do spiritual things.

  622. And pillar three,

  623. which we're going to get to

  624. in a minute,

  625. is praxis.

  626. We think about

  627. how we do it

  628. in a culture.

  629. So I'm working on

  630. something right now

  631. that may have that in it.

  632. But we pray.

  633. We send it to the Bible.

  634. We worship.

  635. Now we have a third pillar.

  636. Third pillar is

  637. we do it with youth.

  638. Now that is

  639. the model I think

  640. we need to think

  641. very carefully about.

  642. We do this

  643. with youth.

  644. youth.

  645. They are 15 years old.

  646. They are 12 years old.

  647. They are 20 years old.

  648. However age they are,

  649. what does it mean

  650. to be a Christian group

  651. and do Christian things

  652. with them?

  653. So we're going to think

  654. about culture.

  655. We're going to think about

  656. how do we fit this in

  657. to culture?

  658. What's the best time

  659. to do this

  660. in culture?

  661. What are some activities?

  662. So now we have to

  663. factor in cell phones.

  664. We're going to do

  665. an activity this afternoon

  666. that would really easily

  667. run with cell phones.

  668. I hate cell phones.

  669. I don't have a cell phone.

  670. I never text.

  671. I haven't texted

  672. for years and years and years.

  673. But I could see

  674. building texting

  675. into your youth program.

  676. I can also see

  677. making them

  678. put their phones away

  679. in the youth group program.

  680. But if your culture

  681. would be offended

  682. if you said

  683. okay all cell phones

  684. go into that basket.

  685. We'll give them back to you

  686. at the end of the night.

  687. I could see a culture

  688. where the kids just say

  689. I am not coming

  690. if you do that.

  691. So how do we build in

  692. cell phones?

  693. Well you guys are way ahead

  694. of me because you're

  695. a lot younger than I am.

  696. And you think savvy.

  697. So think through

  698. texting questions

  699. on the board

  700. during a Q&A.

  701. Think through having

  702. a leader texting

  703. to the kids.

  704. Hey are you listening

  705. to Ken?

  706. This is a great point.

  707. Or texting an outline

  708. to the talk.

  709. Or something along

  710. those lines.

  711. Who knows?

  712. There's a whole bunch

  713. of ways where you

  714. could think through

  715. how do we build

  716. our culture.

  717. Julie is going to do

  718. an activity with us

  719. later on where we

  720. built Facebook in

  721. to kind of a starting

  722. youth group.

  723. Julie said to me

  724. one day just about

  725. six weeks ago

  726. hey I think I've got

  727. a good kind of

  728. mixer kind of opening

  729. built on Facebook.

  730. Actually Julie

  731. do you mind saying

  732. it right now?

  733. We'll look at it

  734. really briefly this

  735. afternoon but do you

  736. mind?

  737. Okay yeah.

  738. But basically

  739. 30 minutes before

  740. youth group

  741. I checked everyone's

  742. Facebook profile

  743. and wrote them all

  744. down.

  745. And then came to

  746. youth group

  747. handed out paper

  748. and then I went

  749. through each one

  750. and read out

  751. what their line was

  752. and they couldn't

  753. say it was them

  754. and they had to

  755. guess what each

  756. other's profile was.

  757. And they really

  758. loved the fact that

  759. everyone knows

  760. their profile.

  761. And so often

  762. young people

  763. they put their

  764. profile out there

  765. they want people

  766. to hear it

  767. they want people

  768. to like it

  769. they want people

  770. to comment on it.

  771. so they really

  772. responded well

  773. to we've got to

  774. hear what everyone

  775. and we even got

  776. to interact with

  777. you said you had

  778. a bad week

  779. what happened

  780. and the school

  781. was very positive.

  782. Yeah.

  783. Our youth group

  784. where we were at

  785. very small

  786. we had eight or

  787. nine kids

  788. and so that was

  789. just a really nice

  790. because one thing

  791. I'm going to say

  792. to you later

  793. is you want to

  794. start the group

  795. by saying

  796. we're a group.

  797. Like it's really

  798. good to be back

  799. together.

  800. You know we

  801. haven't met

  802. for a week

  803. and so let's

  804. kind of catch up

  805. and rediscover

  806. our groupness.

  807. And so the welcome

  808. is very important

  809. for that.

  810. So a really nice

  811. way just to start

  812. the group

  813. speaks right

  814. to their culture.

  815. Those of you

  816. who are kind of

  817. under 25

  818. this is where

  819. you live and breathe

  820. and it's brilliant.

  821. But this is

  822. the third pillar

  823. not the first pillar.

  824. So this is not

  825. how do we attract

  826. kids through

  827. gadgetry

  828. but it's

  829. hey we're a

  830. Christian group

  831. we do Christian

  832. things but we

  833. have to factor

  834. in culture

  835. for crying out loud.

  836. You know it's

  837. where we live.

  838. We need to factor

  839. in learning styles.

  840. This is where

  841. we in Sydney

  842. fail miserably

  843. because we

  844. we have learned

  845. one learning style

  846. and to be honest

  847. I'm doing it right now

  848. where we just

  849. speak a long time

  850. and kids listen.

  851. That's where

  852. my time

  853. at the youth group

  854. at Oakhurst

  855. out in Sydney's west

  856. was super profitable.

  857. because we had

  858. kids who couldn't

  859. listen for 10 seconds.

  860. We had kids

  861. who couldn't read

  862. and so suddenly

  863. I had to think

  864. through okay

  865. how do I take

  866. a 25 minute message

  867. that's

  868. exposition

  869. it's a Bible passage

  870. how do I take that

  871. and deliver it

  872. in a way

  873. that Brendan

  874. can grasp.

  875. Brendan

  876. is a

  877. he was a great

  878. person

  879. but he was

  880. challenged

  881. when it came

  882. to

  883. hearing and

  884. listening

  885. for 25 minutes.

  886. So we had to

  887. think through

  888. very carefully

  889. how do we do it

  890. bang

  891. bang

  892. bang

  893. very active

  894. and so

  895. you may need to

  896. talk to a school

  897. teacher

  898. and say to a school

  899. teacher

  900. listen what do I do

  901. what do I do

  902. because school

  903. teachers are masters

  904. at well you want

  905. to maybe have

  906. three things

  907. and you want

  908. to have a variety

  909. and so you do this

  910. and then you do this

  911. and then you do this

  912. think ah

  913. that is great

  914. so think through

  915. learning skills

  916. active learning

  917. have you not noticed

  918. that most of your kids

  919. are medicated

  920. to the eyeballs

  921. these days

  922. they need

  923. they need something

  924. energy

  925. or something

  926. something

  927. but let's build that

  928. into our teaching

  929. program

  930. let's build it

  931. into maybe

  932. our prayer times

  933. some of you

  934. might be wrestling

  935. through

  936. you know

  937. do we have

  938. moving prayer

  939. for some of you

  940. that feels a little

  941. uncomfortable

  942. but one

  943. one aspect

  944. of youth

  945. ministry

  946. that's taken

  947. quite a hold

  948. in other parts

  949. of the world

  950. is thinking

  951. through stations

  952. where you

  953. you repent

  954. here

  955. and you pray

  956. for friends

  957. there

  958. and you thank

  959. God for creation

  960. there

  961. and you

  962. that's proven

  963. to be very

  964. very popular

  965. with post-millennials

  966. I can see

  967. a number of groups

  968. doing it here

  969. where there's a movement

  970. built in

  971. Lonnie

  972. who's over here

  973. she really liked

  974. liturgical dancing

  975. she loved

  976. that was a private

  977. joke

  978. sorry

  979. we take in

  980. adolescent development

  981. so if you're

  982. running a wider

  983. youth group

  984. of grade 6

  985. to 12

  986. ouch

  987. you know

  988. I run a youth group

  989. from grade 6

  990. to 12

  991. but ouch

  992. you know

  993. we've got

  994. little Elliot

  995. who's just

  996. full of beans

  997. he's a terrific

  998. kid

  999. but he's just

  1000. he's just

  1001. and then we've got

  1002. Roy

  1003. who's in grade 12

  1004. who's really

  1005. wrestling with his future

1006. so I've got to think

  1007. through

1008. man how do I do this

  1009. so I've got to

  1010. really think creatively

  1011. about my program

  1012. it's hard

  1013. it's hard to do

  1014. but I want to

  1015. factor that in

  1016. because the third

  1017. pillar is super important

  1018. now what I'm going

  1019. to tell you

  1020. in a few minutes

  1021. is we're not

  1022. good at this

  1023. what we do is

  1024. we start with

  1025. some games

  1026. and we move

  1027. to the Bible

  1028. that's what we do

  1029. that is such

  1030. there's not a lot

  1031. of thought

  1032. that goes into

  1033. that program

1034. but get rid of that

  1035. this afternoon

  1036. get rid of that

  1037. program

  1038. and rethink

  1039. so those are

  1040. those are our

  1041. three pillars

  1042. and I want you

  1043. to notice

  1044. the movement

  1045. here

  1046. the movement

  1047. is

  1048. the movement

  1049. is

  1050. our theology

  1051. impacts

  1052. our practice

  1053. so there are

  1054. things that

  1055. we're not

  1056. going to do

  1057. I'm not

  1058. I'm going to

  1059. do

  1060. I'm going to

  1061. do very few

  1062. activities

  1063. if any

  1064. that I can't

  1065. see a high

  1066. degree of

  1067. profit

  1068. from

  1069. especially

  1070. theologically

  1071. does this

  1072. help the

  1073. community of

  1074. God

  1075. connect with

  1076. each other

  1077. better

  1078. does this

  1079. help the

  1080. community of

  1081. God

  1082. connect with

  1083. God

  1084. better

  1085. does this

  1086. activity

  1087. help us

  1088. to pray

  1089. learn the

  1090. Bible

  1091. love

  1092. because

  1093. I'm

  1094. theologically

  1095. driven

  1096. but if I

  1097. just think

  1098. this activity

  1099. will quote

  1100. blow off

  1101. steam

  1102. it's gone

  1103. as I was

  1104. saying to

  1105. some youth

  1106. leaders the

  1107. other day

  1108. I have

  1109. never in

  1110. the history

  1111. of my

  1112. youth

  1113. ministry

  1114. seen a

  1115. kid blow

  1116. off steam

  1117. if somebody

  1118. says to you

  1119. well we do

  1120. this activity

  1121. just to let

  1122. them blow

  1123. off steam

  1124. grab their

  1125. tongue and

  1126. see how far

  1127. it will

  1128. actually come

  1129. out

  1130. like in

  1131. the cartoons

  1132. kids don't

  1133. blow off steam

  1134. kids get

  1135. more hyped

  1136. up

  1137. and so

  1138. that's a

  1139. concept

  1140. that I say

  1141. not really

  1142. that's not a

  1143. category I'm going to

  1144. think to

  1145. letting off steam

  1146. but connecting

  1147. learning actively

  1148. those are

  1149. concepts that I

  1150. think through

  1151. now anybody have

  1152. a question about

  1153. that

  1154. anybody have a

  1155. question or a

  1156. thought

  1157. yeah

  1158. yeah

  1159. I'd rather

  1160. not but

  1161. sometimes we

  1162. have to

  1163. yeah

  1164. yeah

  1165. yeah

  1166. yeah

  1167. partly that's

  1168. going to

  1169. that's going to

  1170. depend on the

  1171. structure of some

  1172. things going on in

  1173. your youth program

  1174. do you have

  1175. do you have

  1176. small groups

  1177. where the kids

  1178. go and join a

  1179. small group Bible

  1180. study

  1181. if I'm a big

  1182. believer in running

  1183. a small group

  1184. network we're going

  1185. to talk about that

  1186. in the next

  1187. session

  1188. so I'm not

  1189. going to do a

  1190. lot of small

  1191. group activities

  1192. in the

  1193. actual main

  1194. program

  1195. but it's not a

  1196. bad thing to do

  1197. by any stretch of

  1198. the imagination

  1199. it's a very good

  1200. thing to do

  1201. we just don't

  1202. need them because

  1203. we have cell

  1204. groups that meet

  1205. at another time

  1206. I

  1207. in some

  1208. situations

  1209. yes I would

  1210. split the

  1211. teaching

  1212. I don't

  1213. personally do

  1214. that but I

  1215. can see the

  1216. argument for it

  1217. okay

  1218. junior hires

  1219. Brad's going to

  1220. take you

  1221. you're going to

  1222. do this and

  1223. the senior hires

  1224. will stay

  1225. I tend not

  1226. to do that

  1227. I tend to

  1228. keep them

  1229. all together

  1230. and what I'm

  1231. going to try

  1232. to do is

  1233. pick my

  1234. median level

  1235. and it's hard

  1236. so generally

  1237. I aim for

  1238. kind of

  1239. year 11

  1240. year 10

  1241. and then I'm

  1242. going to think

  1243. through okay

  1244. I want to make

  1245. sure that my

  1246. talk has some

  1247. interactiveness to

  1248. it

  1249. maybe some

  1250. movement involved

  1251. and some

  1252. kind of

  1253. turn to the

  1254. person next

  1255. to you

  1256. and act

  1257. this out

  1258. or I

  1259. need a

  1260. few of

  1261. you to

  1262. come on

  1263. up and

  1264. do this

  1265. drama as

  1266. part of my

  1267. talk or

  1268. I need

  1269. here's the

  1270. white board

  1271. I want you to

  1272. really quickly

  1273. get into groups

  1274. come up with

  1275. blah blah blah

  1276. and write up on

  1277. the board

  1278. yada yada

  1279. yada

  1280. so I

  1281. what I'm

  1282. going to do

  1283. is what I

  1284. said a few

  1285. minutes ago

  1286. I'm going to

  1287. try to build

  1288. in three

  1289. movements in

  1290. my talk

  1291. now I've

  1292. got to be

  1293. honest with

  1294. you

  1295. I tend to

  1296. be lazy

  1297. and that

  1298. often goes

  1299. by the

  1300. wayside

  1301. to build

  1302. that in

  1303. is going to

  1304. take an

  1305. extra hour

  1306. of work

  1307. on your

  1308. talk

  1309. and so

  1310. for those

  1311. of you who

  1312. are volunteers

  1313. and giving

  1314. talks

  1315. that's hard

  1316. work

  1317. yeah

  1318. so if you

  1319. were finding

  1320. a medium

  1321. level

  1322. in your

  1323. group

  1324. do you

  1325. ever find

  1326. that the

  1327. kids

  1328. I know

  1329. you're

  1330. saying

  1331. put all

  1332. the

  1333. three

  1334. stages

  1335. but

  1336. do you

  1337. ever

  1338. find

  1339. that the

  1340. younger

  1341. like

  1342. the

  1343. seven

  1344. miss out

  1345. in the

  1346. 12

  1347. miss out

  1348. yeah

  1349. yeah

  1350. good

  1351. very good

  1352. question

  1353. what do

  1354. you do

  1355. you know

  1356. that's

  1357. that's

  1358. that's

  1359. that's

  1360. why I'm

  1361. a big

  1362. believer

  1363. if you

  1364. can

  1365. in having

  1366. two youth

  1367. groups

  1368. junior high

  1369. senior high

  1370. I think

  1371. that's

  1372. that's

  1373. that's

  1374. the best

  1375. world

  1376. to do

  1377. it

  1378. because

  1379. then I'm

  1380. aiming

  1381. a little

  1382. bit

  1383. more for

  1384. the grade

  1385. nines

  1386. and I'm

  1387. just

  1388. I'm

  1389. just

  1390. saying

  1391. grade

  1392. sevens

  1393. you'll

  1394. get

  1395. it

  1396. and

  1397. I

  1398. think

  1399. we've

  1400. seen

  1401. often

  1402. the grade

  1403. nines

  1404. have a

  1405. bit of

  1406. a pull

  1407. for the

  1408. grade

  1409. sevens

  1410. the grade

  1411. sevens

  1412. like having

  1413. the grade

  1414. nines

  1415. there

  1416. that's

  1417. a bit

  1418. of

  1419. so they'll

  1420. often sit

  1421. through a

  1422. talk that's

  1423. boring

  1424. and I'll

  1425. aim a little

  1426. bit more

  1427. for the

  1428. grade

  1429. twelves

  1430. but yeah

  1431. and in

  1432. my youth

  1433. group right

  1434. now

  1435. this

  1436. this youth

  1437. Elliot

  1438. tremendous

  1439. kid

  1440. but quite

  1441. frankly he

  1442. can drive

  1443. some of

  1444. the grade

  1445. twelves

  1446. crazy

  1447. he gets

  1448. up all

  1449. the time

  1450. and goes

  1451. to the

  1452. fridge

  1453. there's a

  1454. fridge

  1455. in our

  1456. thing

  1457. and raids

  1458. the fridge

  1459. during youth

  1460. group

  1461. and it's

  1462. awesome

  1463. but it's

  1464. really

  1465. awkward

  1466. yeah I'm

  1467. a volunteer

  1468. so I've

  1469. got so

  1470. many other

  1471. things to

  1472. do

  1473. but I

  1474. don't

  1475. believe in

  1476. teaching

  1477. youth

  1478. ministry

  1479. not doing

  1480. youth

  1481. ministry

  1482. so

  1483. I said

  1484. to the

  1485. kids

  1486. when we

  1487. were starting

  1488. the youth

  1489. group

  1490. I said

  1491. hey guys

  1492. I'd really

  1493. like to

  1494. make this

  1495. grade

  1496. nine

  1497. to

  1498. twelve

  1499. and they

  1500. said

  1501. but what

  1502. about

  1503. Doug

  1504. and I

  1505. thought

  1506. fair enough

  1507. we'll

  1508. make it

  1509. seven

  1510. to twelve

  1511. because

  1512. I love

  1513. Doug

  1514. and I

  1515. thought

  1516. I'm

  1517. not going

  1518. to come

  1519. in and

  1520. say

  1521. your friend

  1522. can't

  1523. come

  1524. but it

  1525. created

  1526. problems

  1527. do you

  1528. have a

  1529. comment

  1530. on that

  1531. at all

  1532. mind

  1533. the Canadian

  1534. kids loved

  1535. sock puppet

  1536. memory

  1537. verses

  1538. it was

  1539. just a

  1540. winner

  1541. so

  1542. we might

  1543. talk about

  1544. later
