  1. This is not a sermon on Job 6.

  2. This is a sermon on Job 3 to 27, probably.

  3. So you might need to be able to flick quickly.

  4. So grab a Bible if one's there.

  5. If not, at very least, grab a piece of paper and a pen

  6. to be able to write down the references

  7. so you can flick through it a little bit later.

  8. Let's pray.

  9. Father God, we again thank you for your revelation to us in your word

  10. and the revelation that we have,

  11. final revelation that we have in Christ.

  12. Lord, when this world doesn't make a lot of sense

  13. and we can't understand your sovereign hand,

  14. we pray that we might, like Job, look to our Redeemer

  15. and to realise, Lord, that you are the just God

  16. who will vindicate in the end.

  17. You're the God who will bring justice.

  18. And so, Lord, I pray that in the meantime

  19. that we might have wisdom

  20. and that we might be people of faith.

  21. And we ask it now as we look at your word again.

  22. Amen.

  23. We pray that you would come

  24. and that you would speak

  25. so that your people might be strengthened in Christ

  26. and that we might treasure him above all else.

  27. And we ask it for your sake.

  28. Amen.

  29. In Colorado in 1995,

  30. a police officer arrived at a single car accident

  31. where a car ended up on its roof

  32. and with a baby girl pinned under the car

  33. which was sinking into the mud.

  34. And the officer lifted the car

  35. and the mother pulled the girl out from the mud.

  36. People have been known to do those sorts of things,

  37. to lift incredible weights after an accident

  38. and then later to collapse under the shock of what's happened.

  39. There's also the case where the helicopter

  40. from the TV show Magnum P.I.,

  41. if you remember Tom Selleck from years ago.

  42. This is a generation that will understand who Tom Selleck is.

  43. It crashed in 1988

  44. and it pinned the pilot in shallow water

  45. and one of the pilot's burly friends,

  46. a guy named Tiny,

  47. ran over and lifted the one-ton helicopter enough

  48. to pull the pilot out.

  49. People have been known in that moment of tragedy

  50. to lift incredible weights.

  51. There's a spiritual parallel to tragedy here.

  52. In the moment of tragedy,

  53. when a Christian has been given the grace

  54. to faithfully be able to say,

  55. the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away,

  56. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  57. And then later on to realise what it means

  58. in day-to-day, week-by-week existence

  59. to in fact could collapse in dismay over time.

  60. You see, there's one thing to bear a sudden tragedy

  61. with your rush of adrenaline and clear thinking.

  62. It's quite another to suffer weeks, months, years of pain.

  63. Job 1 and 2 reveal that in one afternoon,

  64. Job lost his 10 children and all his wealth

  65. and shortly afterwards,

  66. he was afflicted with a terrible disease

  67. and in both these tragedies,

  68. he kept his faith.

  69. 1.21 says,

  70. The Lord gave,

  71. the Lord has taken away,

  72. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  73. And then in chapter 2, verse 10,

  74. he says,

  75. Shall we receive good at the hand of God

  76. and shall we not receive evil?

  77. He affirmed God's control over everything

  78. and he bowed in humble submission.

  79. But Job's faith and his reverence towards God

  80. were not rewarded with a quick healing

  81. of his disease.

  82. In chapter 7, he says this in verses 2 to 3,

  83. Like a slave who longs for the shadow

  84. and like a hailing who longs for his wages,

  85. so I am allotted months of emptiness

  86. and nights of misery are apportioned to me.

  87. Job's misery had dragged on for months

  88. and now the Job who stood firm

  89. in chapters 1 and 2

  90. seem to be completely rocked

  91. as you move into chapter 3.

  92. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  93. This is after he's been silent

  94. and after he has said,

  95. The Lord has given,

  96. the Lord has taken away,

  97. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  98. The next thing he says,

  99. he opens his mouth

  100. and he cursed the day of his birth.

  101. He said,

  102. May the day of my birth perish

  103. and the night it was said,

  104. a boy is born.

  105. That day may it turn to darkness.

  106. May God above not care about it.

  107. May no light shine upon it.

  108. And then down in verse 11,

  109. Why did I not perish at birth

  110. and die as I came from the womb?

  111. And 23,

  112. Why is life given to a man

  113. whose way is hidden,

  114. whom God has hedged in?

  115. For sighing comes to me instead of food.

  116. My groans pour out like water.

  117. This is a different Job

  118. than the one we discovered last week

  119. in chapters 1 and 2.

  120. It almost seems here

  121. that his faith is gone.

  122. He wishes he is dead.

  123. And so now we come to the Job

  124. who says,

  125. Why?

  126. Why the suffering?

  127. Where's the justice?

  128. Where's the vindication in this world?

  129. And so what we're going to do this morning

  130. is we're going to look at,

  131. you know,

  132. basically chapters 3 to 27,

  133. you know,

  134. very broadly.

  135. And what we enter into here

  136. is the huge section of Job

  137. where he's debating his three mates,

  138. the guys who turned up

  139. at the end of chapter 2.

  140. After hearing Job say

  141. that he wished he'd never been born,

  142. each of his friends

  143. jump in to explain to Job

  144. why he's suffering

  145. the way he is.

  146. So Eliphaz goes first

  147. and then Job replies to him.

  148. Then Bildad goes next,

  149. Job replies to him.

  150. And then Zophar goes last

  151. and Job replies to him.

  152. And the whole cycle

  153. is repeated twice

  154. and the debate comes to a gridlock

  155. as both sides refuse to budge.

  156. And so the big chunk of Job

  157. is quite repetitive.

  158. Job's friends

  159. sitting a little way off

  160. and they hear what Job has to say

  161. when he sounds off about his grief

  162. and his anguish in chapter 3.

  163. And basically

  164. you could sum up

  165. the main section of Job

  166. is that they all

  167. basically say the same kind of thing.

  168. They serve up

  169. theologically rigid answers

  170. seasoned with a bit of a condemning spirit.

  171. That's kind of what they do.

  172. They are partly correct

  173. and so they are unwise.

  174. What we discover here

  175. is in our search for wisdom

  176. a lack of wisdom.

  177. Their basic position

  178. is summed up nicely

  179. by Eliphaz

  180. in chapter 4

  181. verse 7 to 8

  182. where he poses a question.

  183. Consider now

  184. who being innocent

  185. has ever perished?

  186. Where were the upright

  187. ever destroyed?

  188. As I have observed

  189. those who plough evil

  190. and those who sow trouble

  191. reap it.

  192. See his idea?

  193. Job

  194. you've done something wrong

  195. to deserve

  196. this sort of suffering.

  197. Their basic position is

  198. you reap what you sow

  199. and there is truth in it.

  200. We looked at it last week.

  201. That is proverbial wisdom.

  202. That is the wisdom

  203. of the Proverbs.

  204. But it is never meant

  205. to be applied

  206. as a rigid rule.

  207. There are plenty of people

  208. who sow evil

  209. and never seem to reap it.

  210. They just go on

  211. from strength to strength

  212. and there are those

  213. who never seem

  214. to get a break

  215. from misery.

  216. Good people

  217. who seem to never

  218. get a break

  219. from misery.

  220. And Job's friends

  221. have taken this

  222. generalization

  223. and have made it a rule.

  224. They have concluded

  225. that because Job

  226. is reaping over here

  227. then he is sowed

  228. over there.

  229. So let me illustrate

  230. it for you.

  231. I did this very quickly

  232. last week.

  233. I'll do it again.

  234. Proverbs 24

    Proverbs 24:33

  235. verses 33 and 34

  236. says this.

  237. A little sleep

  238. and a little slumber

  239. a little folding

  240. of the hands to rest

  241. and poverty

  242. will come on you

  243. like a bandit

  244. and scarcity

  245. like an armed man.

  246. basically

  247. if you are lazy

  248. then you can expect

  249. to be poor.

  250. That's a fairly

  251. general principle.

  252. It's a fair enough

  253. kind of principle.

  254. However,

  255. it's totally at a place

  256. to conclude

  257. that just because

  258. somebody is poor

  259. then they must have

  260. been lazy.

  261. Just because

  262. they are reaping poverty

  263. doesn't mean

  264. that they've sown it

  265. through laziness.

  266. and you know

  267. take refugees

  268. for example.

  269. That would be a really

  270. inappropriate application

  271. for those

  272. who are living

  273. in a shantytown

  274. somewhere

  275. escaping war

  276. from another country.

  277. And this is what

  278. Job's friends have done.

  279. They have reduced

  280. God and his actions

  281. to their ability

  282. to grasp order

  283. in the world.

  284. They forgot to take

  285. into account

  286. the mystery of God.

  287. We don't know

  288. everything.

  289. We can't know

  290. everything.

  291. We won't know

  292. everything.

  293. Which is one reason

  294. why humility

  295. is a really good

  296. stance to take

  297. day by day.

  298. And Job's friends

  299. also show

  300. little compassion

  301. in the way

  302. they spoke

  303. of his character.

  304. Eliphaz makes

  305. a sly swipe

  306. of Job

  307. in chapter 4

  308. verse 5.

  309. But now trouble

  310. comes to you

  311. and you are

  312. discouraged.

  313. It strikes you

  314. and you are

  315. dismayed.

  316. You see this is

  317. what he's saying

  318. is Job

  319. the sufferer.

  320. You used to be

  321. Job the righteous

  322. man who used

  323. to offer advice

  324. and help people

  325. who were suffering.

  326. And Eliphaz's charge

  327. here is more than

  328. one of just

  329. inconsistency.

  330. In verse 6

  331. he says,

  332. should not your

  333. piety be your

  334. confidence

  335. and your blameless

  336. ways your hope?

  337. If you put both

  338. those verses together

  339. what Eliphaz is

  340. saying here

  341. it's a real

  342. nasty sarcasm.

  343. It's even more

  344. than a nasty

  345. sarcasm.

  346. He's actually

  347. accusing Job

  348. of rank hypocrisy.

  349. But there's also

  350. a note of

  351. self-righteousness

  352. as he accuses

  353. Job of rank

  354. hypocrisy.

  355. In chapter 5

  356. verse 8

  357. Eliphaz says,

  358. but if it were

  359. I,

  360. I would appeal

  361. to God.

  362. I would lay

  363. my cause

  364. before him.

  365. In other words

  366. I would make

  367. the same mistake

  368. you're making

  369. Job.

  370. I would recognise

  371. God as the one

  372. who is capable

  373. of restoring me.

  374. I would shut

  375. my mouth.

  376. I would confess

  377. my sins and I

  378. would plead for

  379. my deliverance.

  380. And you see

  381. more of it in

  382. chapter 5

  383. verses 17

  384. and onwards.

  385. Blessed is the

  386. man whom God

  387. corrects.

  388. So do not

  389. despise the

  390. discipline of

  391. the Almighty.

  392. In other words

  393. Job,

  394. if you just

  395. confess your

  396. sin and

  397. plead for

  398. God's mercy

  399. then you

  400. will be

  401. restored.

  402. Then his

  403. mate Bildad

  404. has a crack

  405. in chapter

  406. 8

  407. verse 6

  408. He is saying

  409. that because

  410. God has not

  411. restored you

  412. Job

  413. to your

  414. rightful place

  415. that is the

  416. place where

  417. a righteous

  418. person

  419. lives the

  420. good life

  421. again the

  422. proverbial wisdom

  423. coming out here

  424. and because

  425. he has not

  426. restored you

  427. then you are

  428. clearly impure

  429. and unrighteous.

  430. Again

  431. a crack on

  432. his

  433. integrity.

  434. Then number

  435. three

  436. Zophar stands

  437. up and

  438. weighs in

  439. and he

  440. really weighs

  441. in.

  442. He reckons

  443. Job's

  444. suffering is

  445. much less

  446. than he in

  447. fact actually

  448. deserves.

  449. Take it on

  450. the chin Job

  451. because you

  452. deserve a lot

  453. worse than

  454. this.

  455. He's saying

  456. that Job's

  457. sin is so

  458. great that

  459. God has

  460. forgotten some

  461. of it.

  462. He says

  463. this in

  464. chapter 11

  465. verse 11

  466. Surely he

  467. God is

  468. recognises

  469. deceitful men

  470. and when he

  471. sees evil

  472. does not he

  473. take note?

  474. So Job

  475. is deceitful

  476. and evil.

  477. He really

  478. just tears

  479. his character

  480. to shreds

  481. and so

  482. in chapter

  483. 6 which

  484. was just

  485. read out

  486. to us

  487. Job

  488. responds

  489. to his

  490. friend

  491. Eliphaz

  492. Job

  493. never

  494. throughout

  495. the book

  496. never

  497. claims

  498. sinless

  499. perfection.

  500. In

  501. verses 1

  502. to 13

  503. of chapter

  504. 6

  505. are Job's

  506. declaration

  507. of his

  508. innocence

  509. and his

  510. desire to

  511. die.

  512. Such was

  513. his torment.

  514. Such was

  515. the load

  516. he felt.

  517. He just

  518. wishes he

  519. was dead.

  520. And in

  521. the second

  522. half of

  523. the chapter

  524. verses 14

  525. to 30

  526. are Job's

  527. words to

  528. his careless

  529. friends.

  530. Job

  531. actually

  532. resents

  533. his

  534. friend's

  535. lack of

  536. compassion.

  537. So verse

  538. 14

  539. a despairing

  540. man

  541. should have

  542. the devotion

  543. of his

  544. friends

  545. even though

  546. he forsakes

  547. the fear

  548. of the

  549. almighty.

  550. But my

  551. brothers

  552. are

  553. undependable

  554. as

  555. intermittent

  556. streams

  557. as the

  558. streams

  559. that

  560. overflow.

  561. flow.

  562. They

  563. are

  564. fickle.

  565. They

  566. are

  567. undependable.

  568. I

  569. cannot

  570. trust

  571. the

  572. words

  573. coming

  574. out of

  575. my

  576. friends

  577. mouths.

  578. Job is

  579. saying

  580. no matter

  581. what I

  582. say and

  583. what I

  584. do

  585. you are

  586. my

  587. mates.

  588. But he

  589. says you

  590. are like

  591. those puddles

  592. of water

  593. that form

  594. really

  595. quickly in

  596. the heavy

  597. rain but

  598. which disappear

  599. in the

  600. sand.

  601. They're

  602. gone.

  603. They're here

  604. one moment

  605. gone.

  606. The next.

  607. Instead of

  608. being dependable

  609. and a

  610. source of

  611. hope and

  612. life in

  613. a desert

  614. you're

  615. fickle and

  616. you bring

  617. no hope

  618. no comfort.

  619. And Job's

  620. plea here to

  621. his friends is

  622. quite emotional

  623. and quite

  624. pitiable in

  625. verse 28.

  626. But now be

  627. so kind as

  628. to look at

  629. me.

  630. Just

  631. look at

  632. me.

  633. would I

  634. lie to

  635. your face

  636. that is

  637. by hiding

  638. this evil

  639. and sinful

  640. life that

  641. you accuse

  642. me of?

  643. Relent.

  644. Do not

  645. be unjust.

  646. Reconsider

  647. for my

  648. integrity

  649. is at

  650. stake.

  651. He's

  652. saying to

  653. his friends

  654. guys you've

  655. got it all

  656. wrong.

  657. Your

  658. understanding

  659. of God

  660. is too

  661. neat.

  662. You've

  663. taken away

  664. all the

  665. mystery.

  666. And so

  667. the result

  668. is their

  669. counsel is

  670. both naive

  671. and cruel.

  672. The God

  673. of their

  674. neat theology

  675. would not

  676. allow someone

  677. to suffer

  678. unless they

  679. deserved it

  680. and because

  681. Job is

  682. suffering he

  683. must have

  684. deserved it.

  685. Something

  686. happens with

  687. Job from

  688. chapter 3

  689. right

  690. throughout

  691. the course

  692. of this

  693. debate

  694. with his

  695. friends

  696. which is

  697. quite profound

  698. here.

  699. We know

  700. in chapter

  701. 1 and 2

  702. the Lord

  703. gave the

  704. Lord has

  705. taken away

  706. blessed be

  707. the name

  708. of the

  709. Lord.

  710. Chapter

  711. 3

  712. he says

  713. I wish

  714. I was

  715. dead.

  716. He cries

  717. out against

  718. the wisdom

  719. of God

  720. in giving

  721. him birth.

  722. The duration

  723. of his

  724. disease

  725. and his

  726. tragedy

  727. has almost

  728. defeated

  729. the initial

  730. stand of

  731. faith

  732. in chapters

  733. 1 and 2

  734. but

  735. from chapter

  736. 3

  737. all the way

  738. through to

  739. chapter 19

  740. there is

  741. this little

  742. by little

  743. gaining and

  744. regaining of

  745. the faith

  746. of Job

  747. until

  748. you get

  749. to chapter

  750. 19

  751. and his

  752. faith

  753. breaks out

  754. in victory.

  755. In every

  756. speech

  757. up until

  758. then

  759. Job

  760. has

  761. expressed

  762. the

  763. conviction

  764. that

  765. he

  766. would

  767. certainly

  768. die

  769. in

  770. misery.

  771. He

  772. longs

  773. for it

  774. but then

  775. there is a

  776. gradual

  777. change in

  778. the way

  779. he talks

  780. about his

  781. dying.

  782. At first

  783. in chapter

  784. 7 verses

  785. 9 to 10

  786. during his

  787. response to

  788. Eliphaz

  789. he is sure

  790. that death

  791. is the end

  792. of everything.

  793. as the

  794. cloud

  795. vanishes

  796. and is

  797. gone

  798. so one

  799. who goes

  800. down to

  801. the grave

  802. does not

  803. return

  804. he will

  805. never come

  806. back to

  807. his house

  808. again.

  809. That's it

  810. death is

  811. what waits

  812. me

  813. and death

  814. is the

  815. end.

  816. That is

  817. there is not

  818. even anything

  819. good to look

  820. for after

  821. death.

  822. And as he

  823. responds to

  824. Bildad in

  825. chapter 10

  826. verses 20

  827. to 22

  828. he is still

  829. sunk in

  830. despair about

  831. death.

  832. Are not

  833. my few

  834. days almost

  835. over?

  836. Turn away

  837. from me so

  838. I can have

  839. a moment's

  840. joy before

  841. I go to

  842. the place

  843. of no

  844. return.

  845. To the

  846. land of

  847. gloom and

  848. utter darkness

  849. to the

  850. land of

  851. deepest night

  852. of utter

  853. darkness and

  854. disorder where

  855. even the

  856. light is

  857. like darkness.

  858. Then in

  859. his response

  860. to Zophar

  861. in chapter

  862. 14 verses

  863. 7 to 14

  864. he again

  865. faces the

  866. certainty of

  867. death in

  868. suffering and

  869. he cries

  870. out to be

  871. released to

  872. die in

  873. verse 13.

  874. But this

  875. time he

  876. asks a

  877. question in

  878. verse 14.

  879. If someone

  880. dies will

  881. they live

  882. again?

  883. All the

  884. days of my

  885. hard service

  886. I will

  887. wait for

  888. my renewal

  889. to come.

  890. And again

  891. in a second

  892. response to

  893. Eliphaz in

  894. chapter 17

  895. verses 13

  896. to 16

  897. the reference

  898. to the

  899. place of

  900. the dead

  901. is one

  902. of question

  903. rather than

  904. despair.

  905. And then

  906. in chapter

  907. 19

  908. verse 25

  909. Job reaches

  910. an answer

  911. and the

  912. victory comes.

  913. I know

  914. that my

  915. redeemer

  916. lives.

  917. God

  918. and that

  919. in the

  920. end he

  921. will stand

  922. on the

  923. earth and

  924. after my

  925. skin has

  926. been destroyed

  927. yet in my

  928. flesh I

  929. will see

  930. God.

  931. I myself

  932. will see

  933. him with

  934. my own

  935. eyes,

  936. I and

  937. not another,

  938. how my

  939. heart yearns

  940. within me.

  941. There's the

  942. victory.

  943. My redeemer

  944. lives and I

  945. will see God

  946. face to

  947. face.

  948. Death is

  949. not the

  950. end.

  951. Job is

  952. finally sure

  953. that beyond

  954. the grave he

  955. will meet

  956. God as

  957. his vindicator

  958. and not

  959. as an

  960. angry judge.

  961. He will be

  962. vindicated from

  963. all his

  964. suffering.

  965. Even if it

  966. will only be

  967. after death,

  968. even if it's

  969. to suffer for

  970. the rest of

  971. his life,

  972. he knows that

  973. vindication will

  974. come in the

  975. end.

  976. There will be

  977. life and

  978. light and not

  979. death and

  980. darkness.

  981. The victory

  982. for Job is

  983. in his

  984. redeemer,

  985. in his

  986. vindicator.

  987. Someone who

  988. can stand

  989. before God

  990. and plead

  991. his case.

  992. He realized

  993. his friends

  994. weren't going

  995. to do it.

  996. No one

  997. else will

  998. stand with

  999. him.

  1000. He even

  1001. raised the

  1002. possibility of

  1003. a need for

  1004. a mediator

  1005. between God

  1006. and himself

  1007. back in

  1008. chapter 9

  1009. verse 33.

  1010. And then in

  1011. chapter 17

  1012. verse 3,

  1013. Job thought

  1014. that he

  1015. himself might

  1016. be the

  1017. person who

  1018. will stand

  1019. before God

  1020. and vindicate

  1021. himself.

  1022. And now he

  1023. realizes he

  1024. needs someone

  1025. else.

  1026. Someone else

  1027. who won't be

  1028. crushed by God's

  1029. awesome power.

  1030. Someone that

  1031. can approach

  1032. God without

  1033. fear that

  1034. their sin is

  1035. going to exclude

  1036. them from the

  1037. presence of God.

  1038. Someone who can

  1039. present to God

  1040. Job's struggles

  1041. and to ask God

  1042. to have mercy

  1043. on Job.

  1044. Someone on

  1045. the inside

  1046. who pleads

  1047. with God

  1048. for Job.

  1049. Who took

  1050. his struggles

  1051. to God

  1052. and who

  1053. represented

  1054. Job to

  1055. God.

  1056. And Job

  1057. says,

  1058. that is my

  1059. only avenue

  1060. to God's

  1061. justice

  1062. is my

  1063. redeemer

  1064. who lives.

  1065. God

  1066. is my

  1067. love.

  1068. God

  1069. is my

  1070. love.

  1071. Interestingly

  1072. enough though,

  1073. this confidence

  1074. in a redeemer

  1075. does not

  1076. answer all

  1077. of Job's

  1078. questions about

  1079. his suffering.

  1080. It doesn't

  1081. solve all of

  1082. his theological

  1083. problems.

  1084. He is still

  1085. totally confused

  1086. as to why

  1087. he should have

  1088. to suffer

  1089. as he

  1090. does.

  1091. And even

  1092. though he has

  1093. a confidence

  1094. in his

  1095. redeemer,

  1096. his suffering

  1097. goes right

  1098. on.

  1099. But Job's

  1100. confidence of

  1101. new life

  1102. after death

  1103. does enable

  1104. him to hold

  1105. on to three

  1106. of his

  1107. convictions.

  1108. The sovereign

  1109. power of

  1110. God,

  1111. the goodness

  1112. and justice

  1113. of God,

  1114. and the

  1115. faithfulness

  1116. of his own

  1117. heart.

  1118. God

  1119. and with

  1120. those convictions

  1121. he holds

  1122. out against

  1123. the simplistic

  1124. doctrine of

  1125. justice from

  1126. the mouth of

  1127. his three

  1128. friends.

  1129. I was in

  1130. a library the

  1131. other day,

  1132. Bible College

  1133. library,

  1134. and the

  1135. section on

  1136. Job was

  1137. huge.

  1138. So I

  1139. feel quite

  1140. encouraged to

  1141. be able to

  1142. not cover all

  1143. the bases

  1144. when I

  1145. looked at the

  1146. section on

  1147. Job.

  1148. And so

  1149. there's at

  1150. least a couple

  1151. of things that I

  1152. want us to

  1153. pick up,

  1154. acknowledging that

  1155. it's not

  1156. everything and

  1157. not that I

  1158. can nail

  1159. everything.

  1160. Let's just

  1161. pick up a few

  1162. things.

  1163. Firstly,

  1164. there is

  1165. order in this

  1166. world, but

  1167. we don't

  1168. see it all.

  1169. We don't

  1170. see it all.

  1171. And so

  1172. suffering and

  1173. prosperity are

  1174. not distributed

  1175. in the world

  1176. in proportion

  1177. to the evil

  1178. or good

  1179. that a person

  1180. does.

  1181. And so

  1182. to be wise

  1183. is not to

  1184. judge one

  1185. another before

  1186. the time.

  1187. That's one

  1188. element of

  1189. wisdom.

  1190. To not

  1191. judge one

  1192. another before

  1193. the time.

  1194. And the

  1195. time is

  1196. the end

  1197. of time.

  1198. That's the

  1199. time.

  1200. Those who

  1201. suffer may

  1202. be the best

  1203. and those

  1204. who prosper

  1205. may be the

  1206. worst amongst

  1207. us.

  1208. Secondly,

  1209. God reigns

  1210. over all the

  1211. affairs of

  1212. people, from

  1213. the greatest

  1214. to the

  1215. smallest.

  1216. and one

  1217. of the

  1218. most common

  1219. means used

  1220. by people

  1221. today to

  1222. solve the

  1223. mystery of

  1224. suffering,

  1225. inevitably, is

  1226. the limitation

  1227. of God.

  1228. That's how we

  1229. generally solve

  1230. it.

  1231. Particularly the

  1232. limitation of

  1233. God's sovereign

  1234. control over

  1235. all things.

  1236. That is, God

  1237. couldn't have

  1238. willed that

  1239. sickness or

  1240. that explosion

  1241. or the death

  1242. of that child.

  1243. He must not

  1244. be in control.

  1245. He's a

  1246. limited God.

  1247. Let me tell

  1248. you that for

  1249. Job and his

  1250. three friends,

  1251. that never

  1252. occurred to

  1253. them as an

  1254. option.

  1255. On either

  1256. side of the

  1257. camp, it

  1258. never occurred

  1259. to them.

  1260. The common

  1261. ground of

  1262. Job and his

  1263. three friends

  1264. is that God

  1265. reigns.

  1266. He's

  1267. sovereign.

  1268. And no

  1269. solution to

  1270. the problem

  1271. of suffering

  1272. that questions

  1273. this, that

  1274. is God's

  1275. sovereignty, will

  1276. ever satisfy

  1277. in the long

  1278. run.

  1279. But we

  1280. tend to limit

  1281. God in an

  1282. attempt to

  1283. alleviate the

  1284. pain of

  1285. suffering.

  1286. We think

  1287. that if we

  1288. can comprehend

  1289. why suffering

  1290. happens, then

  1291. by default,

  1292. that will

  1293. limit or

  1294. alleviate the

  1295. pain of

  1296. suffering.

  1297. And so in

  1298. an attempt to

  1299. explain suffering,

  1300. ultimately we

  1301. limit the

  1302. sovereignty of

  1303. God or the

  1304. goodness of

  1305. God.

  1306. And it

  1307. will never

  1308. alleviate the

  1309. pain of

  1310. suffering.

  1311. suffering.

  1312. You bring

  1313. God down

  1314. and all of

  1315. a sudden we

  1316. are just

  1317. random.

  1318. And that

  1319. never alleviates

  1320. the pain of

  1321. suffering.

  1322. Thirdly,

  1323. true theology

  1324. should lead to

  1325. love and

  1326. humility.

  1327. If you

  1328. take most

  1329. of the

  1330. statements of

  1331. Job's

  1332. friends

  1333. separately,

  1334. it sounds

  1335. like good

  1336. theology.

  1337. And on

  1338. most part,

  1339. it is.

  1340. But their

  1341. application is

  1342. shallow and

  1343. insensitive.

  1344. In fact,

  1345. the proverbial

  1346. wisdom that

  1347. they lean on

  1348. itself warns

  1349. against such

  1350. an application

  1351. of proverbial

  1352. wisdom.

  1353. wisdom.

  1354. It says

  1355. this in

  1356. Proverbs

    Proverbs 26:9

  1357. 26,

  1358. verse 9,

  1359. like a

  1360. thorn bush

  1361. in a

  1362. drunkard's

  1363. hand is a

  1364. proverb in

  1365. the mouth

  1366. of a

  1367. fool.

  1368. His

  1369. mates

  1370. weren't

  1371. wise.

  1372. Their

  1373. advice

  1374. wasn't

  1375. trustworthy.

  1376. There is

  1377. a wrong

  1378. application of

  1379. proverbial

  1380. wisdom,

  1381. so let us

  1382. be warm

  1383. friends.

  1384. Good

  1385. theology

  1386. does not

  1387. make you

  1388. wise.

  1389. Good

  1390. theology

  1391. can be

  1392. made

  1393. false and

  1394. destructive

  1395. in the

  1396. way it

  1397. is applied.

  1398. Good

  1399. theology

  1400. does not

  1401. make you

  1402. wise and

  1403. it does

  1404. not make

  1405. you

  1406. trustworthy.

  1407. Knowledge

  1408. puffs up

  1409. and love

  1410. builds up.

  1411. All our

  1412. correct theology

  1413. is meant to

  1414. result in

  1415. humility and

  1416. love,

  1417. not arrogance.

  1418. love.

  1419. God

  1420. should help

  1421. us to

  1422. see that,

  1423. that we

  1424. only know

  1425. in part.

  1426. We are

  1427. limited.

  1428. Even after

  1429. the revelation

  1430. of Christ,

  1431. we are still

  1432. limited.

  1433. Wisdom is not

  1434. knowing everything,

  1435. it is in

  1436. relationship with

  1437. the God who

  1438. knows everything.

  1439. humility and

  1440. love must be

  1441. the application

  1442. and it must

  1443. accompany the

  1444. application of

  1445. our theology.

  1446. Job's friends

  1447. would have done

  1448. well to practice

  1449. the old saying,

  1450. let love stand

  1451. as a watchman at

  1452. the gate of your

  1453. mouth.

  1454. love.

  1455. 1 Corinthians

  1456. 13 tells me

  1457. that even this

  1458. side of the

  1459. cross we do

  1460. not see clearly.

  1461. Verse 12 of

  1462. 1 Corinthians

  1463. 13.

  1464. Knowing of

  1465. course 1

  1466. Corinthians 13

  1467. is the great

  1468. chapter of

  1469. love.

  1470. Now we

  1471. shall see,

  1472. now we see

  1473. but a poor

  1474. reflection as

  1475. in a mirror,

  1476. then we shall

  1477. see face to

  1478. face.

  1479. Now I know

  1480. in part,

  1481. then I shall

  1482. know fully even

  1483. as I am fully

  1484. known but

  1485. now these

  1486. three remain,

  1487. faith,

  1488. hope and

  1489. love and

  1490. the greatest

  1491. of these is

  1492. love.

  1493. We don't see

  1494. clearly,

  1495. we don't know

  1496. everything and

  1497. so I'd love us

  1498. to be known as

  1499. a church that

  1500. holds theological

  1501. conviction with

  1502. humility and

  1503. love, with a

  1504. steadfast faith

  1505. and a redeemer in

  1506. the face of

  1507. uncertainty and a

  1508. firm hope for

  1509. the future in

  1510. the middle of

  1511. calamity.

  1512. There is one

  1513. thing that we

  1514. can say with

  1515. certainty and

  1516. that is that

  1517. our redeemer

  1518. lives.

  1519. Over it all,

  1520. hold fast to

  1521. the redeemer,

  1522. look to the

  1523. redeemer,

  1524. treasure the

  1525. redeemer who

  1526. knows and

  1527. will bring

  1528. vindication and

  1529. justice and

  1530. in the end,

  1531. faith in the

  1532. redeemer and

  1533. wisdom go

  1534. together.

  1535. and so in

  1536. the middle of

  1537. calamity and

  1538. we're standing

  1539. beside someone,

  1540. may we put our

  1541. arm around them

  1542. and say I

  1543. don't know why

  1544. this happens but

  1545. let me point you

  1546. to the redeemer

  1547. because he

  1548. lives.

  1549. Cling to the

  1550. redeemer, he

  1551. lives and he

  1552. will bring

  1553. vindication in

  1554. the end.

  1555. So let me

  1556. finish with the

  1557. words of

  1558. Hebrews 4.14.

  1559. Therefore, since

  1560. we have a

  1561. great high

  1562. priest, a

  1563. great advocate,

  1564. a mediator, a

  1565. redeemer who

  1566. has gone through

  1567. the heavens,

  1568. Jesus the

  1569. Son of God,

  1570. let us hold

  1571. firmly to the

  1572. faith we

  1573. profess for we

  1574. do not have a

  1575. high priest that

  1576. is a mediator, a

  1577. redeemer who is

  1578. unable to

  1579. sympathize with

  1580. our weaknesses

  1581. but we have one

  1582. who is being

  1583. tempted in every

  1584. way just as we

  1585. are yet was

  1586. without sin.

  1587. Let us then

  1588. approach the

  1589. throne of grace

  1590. with confidence

  1591. so that we may

  1592. receive mercy and

  1593. find grace to

  1594. help us in our

  1595. time of need.

  1596. Amen.
