  1. Father God, we thank and praise you for the chance to gather.

  2. We thank you for your word and that you are a God who wants us to know him.

  3. You're a God who has revealed yourself.

  4. And we ask that as we look at this chapter tonight, that you would give us insight, that your spirit would work, that we might hear what it is you are teaching us, Lord.

  5. And ultimately, we ask that the result would be that we would know you better and see you more clearly.

  6. Amen.

  7. So as I said, we're in the middle of a rosy series in the book of Job.

  8. It's just a small part of our wisdom series, but we are three weeks in now.

  9. And so the question that I want to ask us is, what have we learned so far?

  10. We are 28 chapters into the book, or 27 technically, not including today, chapters into the book.

  11. We've heard argument and response from Job's friends and then back to Job.

  12. But the question is, have these arguments actually taken us anywhere in this book?

  13. Is Job any better off now than he was in the first two chapters?

  14. For those of you who possibly are in your own times of difficulty or struggle or trial,

  15. have the words of advice from Job's friends given you any light in your situation?

  16. Have Job's responses shown you a path through your time of darkness?

  17. I'm guessing probably not, because it feels like after 27 chapters,

  18. the only progress that we've made is that Job's situation is now worse.

  19. In chapters 1 and 2, we saw him lose his family, his house, his slaves, his livestock, his everything.

  20. And you would think it can't get any worse, but all that's happened in the 25 chapters after that

  21. is that Job has now a strained relationship with three of his friends,

  22. because they are arguing with one another about the cause.

  23. In fact, his own character is now on the line as well,

  24. because they're saying, Job, it's your fault that you're suffering.

  25. You've done something wrong and God is punishing you.

  26. So rather than making the prospect of suffering seem somehow lighter,

  27. if anything, the book of Job is making it seem worse.

  28. Seeming like when you try and fix the problem when you're struggling,

  29. you just spin the wheels and work your way down and down.

  30. And look, the harsh reality of this book is that even once we reach the end of Job,

  31. we still don't get an answer to his question,

  32. why am I suffering?

  33. We spent a bunch of time last week trying to figure it out,

  34. but the reality is at the end of 42 chapters, God doesn't answer.

  35. At least he doesn't answer that question.

  36. He doesn't sit Job down and go, well, you know, I've got a plan.

  37. I'm doing this here and this here and you fit in in this bit and it needs to happen.

  38. He doesn't answer.

  39. And that might be frustrating for you to hear,

  40. especially if right at the moment you're in a time of your own pain.

  41. But I need to be clear with you that if it's an answer to that question that you need,

  42. Job won't give it to you.

  43. If it's an answer to the question, why am I suffering?

  44. Why is this happening to me?

  45. The Bible does not offer it.

  46. But chapter 28 has something better.

  47. Chapter 28 doesn't give you what you might be looking for,

  48. but I believe firmly that it offers you a better answer.

  49. This chapter is different to every other chapter in Job.

  50. This chapter jumps out of the conversation that's been happening back and forth between his friends.

  51. This chapter is written like a poem.

  52. It sits there in three distinct sections.

  53. And it's basically Job's summary of what he has learnt over the course of his suffering.

  54. It's Job's summary of his insight.

  55. After all this back and forth and all this bad advice and everything that's happened,

  56. this chapter is kind of like the high point of Job.

  57. Even though it's not at the end, this is the pinnacle of his understanding of his situation.

  58. And in this chapter, he gives us the key to growing through suffering.

  59. The things that he shares with us in this chapter are the difference between us growing bitter

  60. instead of growing better.

  61. Now, Steve told us last week that suffering is compulsory in life if you're a follower of Jesus.

  62. Reality is it's going to happen to just about everyone.

  63. But if you're a follower of Jesus, suffering will come.

  64. But he also told us that growing through that suffering is optional.

  65. How you handle it when it comes, how you respond, that is in your court.

  66. And here in this chapter, Job wants to give you his insight.

  67. He wants to guide you in your time of difficulty and doubt.

  68. And I've noticed in conversations over the last couple of weeks of this series

  69. that a lot of us are suddenly realising we don't really know what it means to suffer.

  70. Now, I'm not presuming that for everyone.

  71. I know that there are some people in this room who have experienced more pain

  72. than any of us would ever wish on our worst enemy.

  73. But for some of us, we sit here and we live in comfy houses.

  74. We have good families.

  75. We have good jobs.

  76. We have nice cars.

  77. We have good public transport.

  78. We have a meal all the time.

  79. We have a great after party after church.

  80. And it's hard for us to think through what would it mean to experience suffering.

  81. But I want to tell you that having this insight now is really, really important.

  82. And I'm going to show you why as we work our way through this book.

  83. Two key things in this chapter that Job has discovered that he wants to share with you his insight.

  84. First one is there in verse 1 all the way through to 19.

  85. Wisdom cannot be found.

  86. Wisdom cannot be found.

  87. Job begins by marvelling at the incredible advances of man.

  88. If you look there, he gets excited about how humans have mined the earth,

  89. how they have discovered the precious riches of the world,

  90. how they have harnessed natural resources as fuel and other things.

  91. We're smarter than the animals.

  92. They don't know what's going on under the surface of the ground,

  93. but we can dig down and find things.

  94. We've discovered things that no one else knows about.

  95. And if we were to add to this hymn now,

  96. remembering this was written thousands of years before Jesus,

  97. we could add amazing advances like we've walked on the moon.

  98. We've cured diseases and we seem to make progress each and every day.

  99. Our capacity is increasing.

  100. There's new inventions, new cures.

  101. And you have to wonder,

  102. will there come a time when we've discovered everything there is to discover?

  103. That's kind of Job's point is we are discovering stuff.

  104. We are figuring stuff out.

  105. We are the pinnacle of creation

  106. and we're working out how everything else around us works.

  107. But in the midst of him going, wow, aren't we good?

  108. His conclusion in verse 12 is still,

  109. where can wisdom be found?

  110. Even though we have learned so much,

  111. even though we can figure out that there's things under the earth

  112. that you can't see with your bare eyes,

  113. where can wisdom be found?

  114. See, we've increased our knowledge,

  115. but wisdom still eludes us.

  116. Wisdom and knowledge for Job are not necessarily the same thing.

  117. Knowing information and living wisely are not necessarily directly related.

  118. There might often be some overlap,

  119. but here Job is saying all those discoveries don't count towards wisdom.

  120. Now, it's worth us taking a step sideways at this point

  121. and actually being clear what we mean when we say wisdom.

  122. We need to define wisdom because that's what we're looking for.

  123. That's what this series is about.

  124. That's our goal.

  125. And I want to say that wisdom is defined by purpose.

  126. So living wisely has to be anchored to an ultimate goal or an ultimate purpose.

  127. And see, our problem is that when we experience suffering in our lives,

  128. our goal becomes immediate.

  129. It becomes, I need to survive this suffering.

  130. I need to escape this suffering.

  131. I need to get to the other side.

  132. And we lose sight of the fact that our lives actually have a purpose already.

  133. Suffering doesn't change the purpose of our lives.

  134. All of life, all of creation, all of the earth, all of you,

  135. exists from God, for God, and to God.

  136. The purpose of everything that exists is to glorify God.

  137. That's why He made it.

  138. The Bible says it's from Him, for Him, and to Him.

  139. And therefore, wisdom is the ability to do that purpose.

  140. The ability to give God the glory and honor that He deserves

  141. in every situation and circumstance that we face, including suffering.

  142. One writer defines wisdom a little bit more compactly than I do.

  143. He calls it competence with regard to the realities of life.

  144. The ability to handle reality.

  145. And that's not a bad definition as long as we understand that the ultimate reality is God.

  146. He is the thing that defines all other reality.

  147. Let me give you a personal example of what this looks like in our own lives.

  148. When I was about 14, I started to deal with my own family disintegrating.

  149. So my parents' marriage fell apart.

  150. My mum, she was already there, I guess, but she started living as an alcoholic.

  151. My older brother moved out of the house.

  152. And so me and my younger siblings were left living in the house with Dad's key card.

  153. And basically, we went into survival mode.

  154. It became about trying to just get through and act like we were normal

  155. so that people weren't always asking, are you okay? Are you okay?

  156. Okay.

  157. So we wanted to go to school just like everyone else.

  158. We wanted to pretend that we were fine, that everything was normal.

  159. And the only way that I could think of to handle that situation was to blame my dad

  160. and to harbor all this hatred towards him so that it was his fault.

  161. And if it was his fault, then I was justified to do whatever I wanted without any consideration for him.

  162. And I figured, I'm 14, I can't look after anyone else, so I'm just going to look after myself.

  163. And so I didn't think about anyone else.

  164. All I cared about was being normal and trying to pretend that my life was continuing on

  165. and that this didn't affect me.

  166. All I cared about was getting to the other side of this divorce and everything that was going on.

  167. But can you see that God has a design that's bigger than that for me?

  168. God's design, according to the Scriptures, is that I would forgive my family in spite of what they've done.

  169. That I would honor my parents in spite of the mistakes that they had made.

  170. That I would care for my younger siblings.

  171. But worldly wisdom, the wisdom that we come up with, excuses me, doesn't it?

  172. And I can see you.

  173. In your eyes now, you're saying, it's okay, Sam.

  174. You tried your hardest.

  175. That was a difficult situation.

  176. You did the best that you could.

  177. But this isn't about whether I feel okay about it now.

  178. This is to show you that when we figure out a situation, when we apply logic and reason,

  179. the wisdom that we come up with isn't even close to true wisdom.

  180. Because we become so absorbed in our situation and circumstance that we lose sight of the God-given purpose for our lives.

  181. And if we fail in the day-to-day circumstances of life, how much more will we struggle when the flame of suffering is added into the process?

  182. The first thing that Job has learned in his life and in his suffering is that wisdom cannot be found.

  183. No amount of sitting around with his wise friends will enable him to figure out the best path forward.

  184. No amount of sitting down and reflecting and applying reason will enable him to find wisdom and the path that God has designed for him.

  185. No amount of effort will unveil wisdom for those who seek it.

  186. Now, there's not much arguing this point when you look at the kind of advice that Job's three learned friends were giving.

  187. Wisdom is certainly nowhere to be found in these early pages of Job.

  188. But look at where this discovery leads him.

  189. Having figured out that in his situation he can't find the answer for himself,

  190. have a look at verse 20.

  191. Where then does wisdom come from?

  192. Where does understanding dwell?

  193. If it can't be found, if I can't attain it somehow,

  194. then where does it come from?

  195. Because some people live wisely.

  196. Some people live the lives that they were designed to by God.

  197. In fact, I think Job has wisdom even though he doesn't realize it all the way through the book.

  198. Job has it all along and so he wants to know where does wisdom come from?

  199. As we wrestle with suffering and difficulty, how can we find a path through?

  200. And the second thing that Job learns asking this question is that wisdom belongs to God.

  201. Look at verse 21.

  202. It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air.

  203. Destruction and death say only a rumor of it has reached our ears.

  204. God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells.

  205. For he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

  206. When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,

  207. when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm,

  208. then he looked at wisdom and appraised it.

  209. He confirmed it and tested it.

  210. Wisdom is the domain of God alone.

  211. Because if wisdom is understanding the realities of life,

  212. all of those realities being accountable to him,

  213. if wisdom is the ability to understand how our circumstance fits with someone else's circumstance

  214. and how all of history is working together towards the ultimate aim of glorifying God,

  215. then a necessary prerequisite for wisdom is to be able to see all of those circumstances,

  216. is to have been there from the beginning and to be here till the end.

  217. And God alone can claim that.

  218. God alone is eternal.

  219. God has laid out his plans and his plans are beyond our understanding.

  220. Even if we could somehow raise ourselves up and look down on all of history,

  221. we would lack the capacity to understand what it is that God is doing.

  222. Even if God was to try and explain it to us,

  223. it's beyond us.

  224. There's a passage in Isaiah 55 that tells us exactly that.

  225. It says in verse 8 of Isaiah 55,

  226. Wisdom is not found in the details of our lives and our suffering.

  227. It's not found in experience.

  228. It's not learned from mistakes.

  229. What we learn from mistakes is how to make new mistakes that we hadn't thought of before.

  230. Wisdom belongs to God alone.

  231. Because he alone can see all.

  232. He alone knows all.

  233. And he alone has mapped a path through all.

  234. God is wisdom.

  235. His ways are beyond our comprehension.

  236. And so the key verse of this book,

  237. and I think the key verse of all the wisdom books in Scripture,

  238. is here in chapter 28 and verse 28.

  239. Having looked at wisdom and appraised it,

  240. having confirmed it and tested it,

  241. God says to man,

  242. The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom.

  243. And to shun evil is understanding.

  244. God's told us what wisdom is.

  245. He's unveiled the unfindable mystery.

  246. Fear the Lord, shun evil.

  247. It's so simple.

  248. It's almost frustrating.

  249. Maybe even a little unsatisfying.

  250. If you were to put yourself into Job's shoes,

  251. would this verse be an encouragement?

  252. If you had just lost your family,

  253. your house,

  254. your health,

  255. everything that you owned,

  256. would fear me be an encouragement?

  257. In the dark times in your own life,

  258. as you wrestle with God,

  259. demanding an answer for why this is happening,

  260. would fear me be sufficient?

  261. Because that's the only answer that God gives.

  262. And the thing is,

  263. for Job,

  264. it was sufficient.

  265. It took him some time to get there,

  266. but for Job,

  267. fear me was enough

  268. for him to see the wise path

  269. through his suffering.

  270. And so with the time that we've got left,

  271. I want to wrestle with you

  272. with three questions.

  273. If fear the Lord,

  274. is the thing that we need,

  275. not just when we suffer,

  276. but in all of life,

  277. if that is wisdom,

  278. if that is the guiding principle

  279. for us to live well,

  280. then we need to ask the questions,

  281. what does fear of the Lord look like?

  282. In my life,

  283. in my day to day,

  284. what does it look like

  285. to fear the Lord?

  286. Secondly,

  287. how do I do it?

  288. How do I train myself?

  289. How do I teach myself?

  290. And lastly,

  291. I just want to see

  292. what difference does it make

  293. to fear God

  294. when I'm suffering?

  295. How does that change anything

  296. if I fear God?

  297. Those three questions

  298. I want to try and answer with you.

  299. Firstly,

  300. what does fear of the Lord look like?

  301. Now,

  302. when we hear the word fear

  303. in the same sentence as God,

  304. those of us

  305. who have been around church

  306. for a little while

  307. really quickly want to get God

  308. off the hook.

  309. And so we want to soften off

  310. that idea of fearing God

  311. and so we add in fear God

  312. but He's loving.

  313. Fear God

  314. but He's gracious.

  315. Fear God

  316. but He's merciful.

  317. But before we start defining God

  318. by the things

  319. that we want to hear,

  320. let's look at the Bible

  321. and see if there are

  322. some helpful examples

  323. of what it looks like

  324. to fear God.

  325. You can scribble these down

  326. to look at them

  327. in more detail later on

  328. if you want to.

  329. You could go to Isaiah 6.

  330. When Isaiah's eyes

  331. behold God,

  332. he falls down

  333. on his face

  334. in terror

  335. knowing that

  336. he is unworthy.

  337. Knowing that

  338. he is faced

  339. with a holy God

  340. who is powerful

  341. and just

  342. and has every right

  343. to destroy Him

  344. in that moment.

  345. In Luke's gospel

  346. when Jesus helps

  347. the disciples

  348. with a miraculous

  349. catch of fish,

  350. suddenly Peter

  351. is confronted

  352. with the holiness

  353. and power

  354. and majesty

  355. of his Lord

  356. and again

  357. he falls on his knees

  358. and he says

  359. get away from me Lord.

  360. I'm a sinful man.

  361. I don't deserve

  362. to even be

  363. in your presence.

  364. And finally

  365. and perhaps

  366. the most significant

  367. example

  368. is Jesus himself

  369. is said

  370. to fear the Lord.

  371. In Isaiah chapter 11

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  372. this is prophesying

  373. that Jesus would come

  374. and it says this

  375. the spirit of the Lord

  376. will rest on him

  377. the spirit of wisdom

  378. and of understanding

  379. the spirit of counsel

  380. and of power

  381. the spirit of knowledge

  382. and of the fear

  383. of the Lord.

  384. And verse 3

  385. and he will delight

  386. in the fear

  387. of the Lord.

  388. Fear is not

  389. necessarily

  390. a negative description

  391. in a relationship.

  392. Jesus delights

  393. in his fear

  394. of God.

  395. He delights

  396. in it

  397. and it's

  398. the appropriate

  399. response to God.

  400. It's the inevitable

  401. response to God.

  402. When you

  403. meet God

  404. and you see him

  405. for his glory

  406. and majesty

  407. and power

  408. the creator

  409. of the universe

  410. the sustainer

  411. of the universe

  412. the one who is

  413. over all things

  414. the only right response

  415. is to fall

  416. on your knees

  417. in fear.

  418. But that doesn't

  419. make it a negative thing.

  420. It's not dissimilar

  421. really to the way

  422. that we relate

  423. to our parents.

  424. Our parents

  425. love us

  426. and care for us

  427. mostly

  428. love us

  429. and care for us

  430. and provide for us

  431. and do all those

  432. sort of things

  433. but they also

  434. discipline us

  435. and we know

  436. we have a healthy

  437. fear

  438. that we need

  439. to live

  440. according to the rules

  441. that they have given us

  442. or there are consequences.

  443. It doesn't mean

  444. that there's no love

  445. but fear

  446. is the right

  447. way to relate

  448. to somebody

  449. who has

  450. power and authority

  451. over us

  452. and that is the relationship

  453. we have

  454. with God.

  455. So the result

  456. of fearing God

  457. is that we get

  458. to see God

  459. as most important.

  460. We get to see

  461. Him as the one

  462. who is driving

  463. the agenda

  464. of our lives.

  465. We get to see

  466. Him as the one

  467. whose agenda matters.

  468. Fear of the Lord

  469. enables us to care

  470. about what He cares

  471. about

  472. and not just

  473. what we care about.

  474. It lifts our eyes

  475. to Him

  476. who is powerful

  477. Him who is sovereign

  478. Him who is in control

  479. and fear of the Lord

  480. enables us

  481. to not need

  482. all the answers

  483. as to when

  484. and why.

  485. The answer

  486. God gives

  487. to Job

  488. in this book

  489. is

  490. it's me.

  491. I'm in control.

  492. You don't need

  493. to know

  494. what's going

  495. in this situation.

  496. You just need

  497. to remember

  498. I'm God.

  499. I've got

  500. all the power

  501. in the world.

  502. There is nothing

  503. that compares

  504. to me.

  505. I am good

  506. beyond your wildest

  507. dreams

  508. and I love you

  509. more than anything.

  510. That's all

  511. you need to know.

  512. For Jesus

  513. fearing God

  514. meant trusting Him

  515. and obeying Him

  516. all the way

  517. to the cross.

  518. And for us

  519. in our lives

  520. it means

  521. we trust God

  522. and we obey Him

  523. even when

  524. and especially

  525. when He doesn't

  526. give us the details.

  527. When He says

  528. go

  529. we go.

  530. When He says

  531. stop doing something

  532. we stop doing it.

  533. It means we trust God

  534. even when He doesn't

  535. need to give us

  536. all the answers.

  537. Can you see

  538. that wisdom

  539. cannot be

  540. simply about

  541. knowledge?

  542. You cannot

  543. learn this.

  544. We don't come

  545. to know God

  546. simply by studying

  547. not even just

  548. by reading the Bible.

  549. It's part of it

  550. but not until

  551. God reveals

  552. Himself

  553. in the Bible

  554. by His Holy Spirit

  555. are we able

  556. to know His heart

  557. and His mind

  558. and His character.

  559. And see

  560. wisdom then

  561. is more about

  562. revelation.

  563. It's more about

  564. God showing us

  565. Himself

  566. and that becoming

  567. the guiding principle

  568. for our lives

  569. because God

  570. alone is wisdom

  571. and only

  572. as He makes

  573. Himself known

  574. can we share in it.

  575. As I was studying

  576. this passage

  577. this week

  578. and trying to

  579. understand

  580. what does this

  581. mean in our

  582. circumstances

  583. what keeps this

  584. from being just

  585. a trite slap

  586. in the face

  587. that says

  588. suck it up

  589. when you're

  590. suffering.

  591. and I came

  592. across this

  593. story

  594. which was

  595. really helpful.

  596. Apparently

  597. in Wales

  598. there's a

  599. valley in

  600. Wales

  601. where they

  602. raise sheep

  603. tend sheep

  604. whatever they

  605. do with sheep

  606. and they have

  607. an issue

  608. there with a

  609. parasite

  610. and if it's

  611. left untreated

  612. effectively

  613. these sheep

  614. will be eaten

  615. alive by these

  616. parasites.

  617. And so what

  618. the shepherds

  619. are forced to

  620. do

  621. is once a

  622. year they

  623. gather the

  624. sheep

  625. and they

  626. have to

  627. submerge

  628. them into

  629. antiseptic.

  630. This is not

  631. something that

  632. the sheep

  633. look forward

  634. to.

  635. Sheep are

  636. not swimmers

  637. and in the

  638. story they

  639. explain that

  640. basically the

  641. shepherd's got to

  642. force these

  643. sheep into

  644. the vat

  645. and the dog

  646. is on the

  647. other side

  648. barking at

  649. them to

  650. make sure

  651. they don't

  652. jump out

  653. the other

  654. side

  655. and the

  656. sheep's

  657. trying to

  658. spin around

  659. and climb

  660. back out

  661. and the

  662. shepherd has

  663. to force

  664. it under

  665. head and

  666. everything

  667. eyes,

  668. nose,

  669. mouth,

  670. all under

  671. in the

  672. antiseptic

  673. before it

  674. can be let

  675. out and

  676. put back out

  677. to pasture

  678. and you

  679. feel this

  680. tension that

  681. the shepherd

  682. cares for

  683. his sheep.

  684. He probably

  685. wants to

  686. explain why

  687. he has to

  688. do this.

  689. If you could

  690. just let

  691. them know

  692. why this

  693. is helping

  694. them.

  695. But have

  696. you ever

  697. tried to

  698. explain

  699. something to

  700. a sheep?

  701. It doesn't

  702. matter how

  703. much you

  704. want to

  705. do it,

  706. it's not

  707. going to

  708. work because

  709. we operate

  710. on a

  711. different level

  712. of reality

  713. to sheep.

  714. We understand

  715. things that

  716. they will

  717. never understand.

  718. We interact

  719. with things,

  720. we reason,

  721. we logic in

  722. ways that

  723. they are not

  724. capable of.

  725. And it's

  726. the same

  727. with God

  728. when he's

  729. interacting with

  730. us.

  731. God exists

  732. in a reality

  733. that we

  734. can't even

  735. begin to

  736. comprehend.

  737. He is

  738. eternal and

  739. infinite.

  740. And so

  741. even if he

  742. was to try

  743. and explain

  744. to us

  745. why he's

  746. doing things,

  747. we couldn't

  748. understand it

  749. anyway.

  750. And so

  751. all we're

  752. left with

  753. is to

  754. just look

  755. at the

  756. shepherd and

  757. know that

  758. the shepherd

  759. looks after

  760. us,

  761. feeds us,

  762. provides for

  763. us,

  764. and to

  765. trust.

  766. There is a

  767. lot for us

  768. to learn from

  769. Job's journey

  770. about what it

  771. looks like to

  772. fear God

  773. because he

  774. does go on

  775. a journey.

  776. This book

  777. is 42

  778. chapters long

  779. because it

  780. takes time

  781. to wrestle

  782. with the

  783. things that

  784. he is

  785. wrestling with.

  786. The truth

  787. of God's

  788. sovereignty

  789. and character

  790. doesn't switch

  791. off the pain

  792. that Job

  793. is feeling.

  794. It doesn't

  795. make everything

  796. suddenly better.

  797. In fact,

  798. if you look

  799. at Job

    Job 1 chapter mention

  800. chapter 1,

  801. one of the

  802. first things

  803. we learn

  804. about Job

  805. is that he

  806. fears the

  807. Lord.

  808. He's had

  809. the wisdom

  810. all along,

  811. but it's

  812. taken him

  813. time for

  814. that wisdom

  815. to apply,

  816. that wisdom

  817. to shape

  818. his steps.

  819. He's been

  820. through the

  821. steps of

  822. crying out

  823. and yelling

  824. at God

  825. and demanding

  826. answers.

  827. And so

  828. the Bible

  829. is not

  830. saying

  831. wisdom

  832. solves

  833. everything.

  834. The Bible

  835. is not

  836. saying

  837. live well

  838. and everything

  839. will be

  840. fine.

  841. In your

  842. pain and

  843. in your

  844. depression

  845. and in

  846. your suffering,

  847. it is right

  848. to grieve

  849. and to mourn

  850. and to feel

  851. sad and

  852. to cry

  853. and everything

  854. else that

  855. goes with

  856. dark times

  857. in your

  858. life.

  859. What wisdom

  860. does is

  861. it shows

  862. you the

  863. path through

  864. those times.

  865. The Bible

  866. licenses you

  867. to feel

  868. how you

  869. feel.

  870. As

  871. Christians,

  872. if anyone

  873. ever says

  874. to you,

  875. you need

  876. to smile

  877. because the

  878. Bible says

  879. rejoice,

  880. I give you

  881. permission to

  882. slap them

  883. lovingly.

  884. Because

  885. Job is

  886. red from

  887. weeping.

  888. he's

  889. sitting on

  890. the ground

  891. scratching at

  892. his saws

  893. with a

  894. piece of

  895. pottery

  896. and it

  897. takes time

  898. to process

  899. things.

  900. Job's

  901. fear of

  902. God

  903. allows him

  904. to ask

  905. questions

  906. but not

  907. deny God.

  908. Job refuses

  909. to curse

  910. the God

  911. who made

  912. heaven and

  913. earth even

  914. though his

  915. wife says

  916. that's what

  917. he should

  918. do.

  919. Job's

  920. fear of

  921. God means

  922. that he

  923. will not

  924. doubt the

  925. character of

  926. God's

  927. goodness and

  928. mercy even

  929. though his

  930. friends spend

  931. 27 chapters

  932. trying to

  933. convince him

  934. that it's

  935. his fault

  936. and God

  937. is angry.

  938. That's a

  939. really crude

  940. summary of

  941. the first

  942. part of

  943. Job but

  944. it's not

  945. that far

  946. off the

  947. mark.

  948. But because

  949. Job fears

  950. God,

  951. because Job

  952. knows God,

  953. he refuses

  954. to doubt the

  955. character of

  956. God's

  957. goodness.

  958. And Job's

  959. fear is

  960. enough of an

  961. anchor to

  962. keep him from

  963. falling into

  964. complete despair

  965. and giving

  966. up on

  967. life itself.

  968. One of the

  969. amazing things

  970. through the

  971. book of

  972. Job, and

  973. Steve pointed

  974. it out last

  975. week, is

  976. that progressively

  977. as Job

  978. responds to

  979. his friends,

  980. he gets

  981. more confident.

  982. At the

  983. beginning he

  984. wants to

  985. die.

  986. He says,

  987. God, just

  988. kill me.

  989. That'd be

  990. better.

  991. But by

  992. the end, or

  993. by chapter

  994. 19 even,

  995. he's able to

  996. cry out,

  997. my Redeemer

  998. lives.

  999. And do

  1000. you know

  1001. why?

  1002. Each time

  1003. his friends

  1004. try and

  1005. accuse him

  1006. of something,

  1007. each time

  1008. his friends

  1009. offer false

  1010. wisdom and

  1011. bad advice,

  1012. he's forced

  1013. to go back

  1014. to the God

  1015. who he

  1016. fears.

  1017. He's forced

  1018. to go back

  1019. to the

  1020. ultimate reality

  1021. for his

  1022. life, the

  1023. ultimate

  1024. purpose, and

  1025. he starts

  1026. saying,

  1027. no, you're

  1028. wrong because

  1029. my God is

  1030. loving.

  1031. No, you're

  1032. wrong because

  1033. my God

  1034. saved his

  1035. people out

  1036. of Egypt.

  1037. No, you're

  1038. wrong because

  1039. I know my

  1040. God.

  1041. And as

  1042. he reminds

  1043. himself of

  1044. God's

  1045. character,

  1046. he's able

  1047. to say with

  1048. confidence,

  1049. my Redeemer

  1050. lives.

  1051. He knows

  1052. that God

  1053. will save

  1054. him because

  1055. that's who

  1056. God is.

  1057. On the

  1058. basis of

  1059. the God

  1060. that he

  1061. followed,

  1062. Job

  1063. persevered.

  1064. Even though

  1065. by the end

  1066. of the book

  1067. he still

  1068. can't see

  1069. why it

  1070. happened,

  1071. even though

  1072. he still

  1073. can't see

  1074. what God

  1075. is doing

  1076. and remember

  1077. we get

  1078. to see

  1079. behind the

  1080. scenes.

  1081. We know

  1082. that God

  1083. is showing

  1084. off.

  1085. It's what

  1086. the book

  1087. of Job

  1088. is.

  1089. It's God

  1090. showing off

  1091. that he

  1092. is more

  1093. satisfying

  1094. than anything

  1095. in the

  1096. world.

  1097. Satan's

  1098. trying to

  1099. convince him,

  1100. no, Job

  1101. will give

  1102. up on

  1103. you, he

  1104. won't go

  1105. the distance,

  1106. but God

  1107. says,

  1108. no, I

  1109. know Job

  1110. and he

  1111. knows me

  1112. and no

  1113. matter what

  1114. you take

  1115. off him,

  1116. if he

  1117. has me,

  1118. he will

  1119. stay true.

  1120. And our

  1121. hope's no

  1122. different.

  1123. we don't

  1124. need

  1125. details

  1126. in our

  1127. life

  1128. because we've

  1129. got plenty

  1130. to base

  1131. our trust

  1132. in God

  1133. on.

  1134. In good

  1135. times and in

  1136. bad times,

  1137. we can look

  1138. to Jesus.

  1139. When we

  1140. suffer, we can

  1141. look to the

  1142. one who

  1143. suffered for

  1144. us.

  1145. When we are

  1146. unsure, we can

  1147. look to the

  1148. one who reveals

  1149. God completely.

  1150. We can look

  1151. to the one

  1152. who shows us

  1153. the character

  1154. of God,

  1155. who shows

  1156. the mercy

1157. and the compassion and the holiness and the majesty and the humility

1158. and the sovereignty and the power and the unfailing love,

1159. we can look to Jesus.

1160. As followers of Jesus, you can be sure that suffering will come.

1161. We can be sure that life will kick us when we're down,

1162. but in Jesus we find the wisdom of God so that we can not just survive,

1163. but we can live and flourish and rejoice even in those deepest, darkest moments.

1164. I think it's really important that Job begins,

1165. the book of Job begins by telling us that Job feared the Lord,

1166. that he already had the wisdom.

1167. I want you to think right now, you are not yet facing suffering.

1168. You are Job in chapter 1 before Satan rocks up and starts causing trouble.

1169. It matters that we learn to fear the Lord in the good times and the mediocre times

1170. and the middle of the road times in preparation for when suffering comes.

1171. Because the God that you know now is the God that will need to sustain you

1172. when everything else is gone.

1173. The Bible more than allows you to have sad emotions.

1174. If anything, I think it affirms it.

1175. So if you need to cry sometimes, do it.

1176. But I think the key in this chapter to growing wise in suffering

1177. is being able to let go of that question, why?

1178. Being able to let go of that need to know the details.

1179. Because God hasn't answered that question.

1180. God hasn't promised to give you the details and even if he did,

1181. you couldn't do anything with them.

  1182. You couldn't comprehend them.

1183. The key to growing wise in suffering,

1184. the key to being wise in your life is not knowing everything that's coming.

1185. It's fixing your eyes on Jesus.

1186. Fixing your eyes on a God who is love.

1187. On a God who is just.

1188. On a God who gave his only son

1189. so that you would know how much you matter to him.

1190. Maybe like Job, when you face trial,

1191. you will need to remind yourself of the God that you follow.

1192. Of his love and of his grace and of his sacrifice.

1193. And so I want to finish up by reminding you tonight

1194. because I'm sure that some of us,

  1195. even now,

1196. are crying out to God,

  1197. why?

  1198. Why is this happening?

1199. And so I want you to hear the words of hope and confidence

1200. and peace that we have in our risen Savior from Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1201. What then shall we say in response to this?

1202. If God is for us, who can be against us?

1203. He who did not spare his own son,

1204. but gave him up for us all,

1205. how will he not also along with him graciously give us all things?

1206. Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?

1207. It is God who justifies.

1208. Who is he that condemns?

  1209. Christ Jesus who died.

1210. More than that, who was raised to life,

1211. is at the right hand of God
