  1. We are into our last sermon on Job.

  2. We've done three weeks of it so far.

  3. And you've probably discovered much about Job's life,

  4. which aligns with your own in terms of suffering.

  5. Also discovered there another link between me and Job

  6. and that he had three, the most beautiful daughters in all the land.

  7. And so I'm happy to claim that one as well.

  8. Well, it's been a great journey for three weeks.

  9. We've been growing in wisdom as we have journeyed with Job,

  10. particularly in the face of suffering.

  11. It has helped us see the pathway to wisdom

  12. when the world is not as we would want it to be.

  13. I said right at the beginning of this series

  14. that wisdom is knowing how to live well in God's world.

  15. It's knowing how to live well in every situation.

  16. And last week we turned in Job 28

  17. and discovered the nature of wisdom,

  18. of what it means to live well in God's world.

  19. And it said there right at the end,

  20. the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  21. The fear of the Lord is not a psychological

  22. or an emotional response to God.

  23. It is in fact a total commitment to God

  24. within the boundaries of the relationship

  25. that he has set up between us and him

  26. through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  27. That is what it means to fear the Lord.

  28. It's a total commitment to the God

  29. who has established relationship with us

  30. through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  31. And so I would suggest to you

  32. that to treasure Jesus,

  33. as our mission statement says,

  34. is in fact the wise life.

  35. That is wisdom.

  36. To treasure Jesus is wisdom.

  37. Because wisdom is not knowledge,

  38. it is relational.

  39. We will see that the wise life

  40. is demonstrated in these final chapters of Job.

    Job 28 chapter mention

  41. Chapter 28,

  42. which is where Sam was with us last week,

  43. is part of the final protest

  44. that Job makes against his three mates

  45. and their cruel and naive reasoning

  46. to why he is suffering.

  47. Job's protest goes from chapters 26 to 31.

  48. And in his protest,

  49. he almost demands that God show up

  50. so he can talk to God himself about his suffering.

  51. And instead of God showing up,

  52. we hear from a young man named Elihu

  53. who appears in chapter 32

  54. for the very first time

  55. and he speaks all the way to chapter 37.

  56. He's got a lot to say.

  57. Elihu says that he has been listening for some time

  58. to Job and his three friends,

  59. dialoguing and arguing and backing

  60. and toing and froing.

  61. And he says that because he's younger,

  62. he doesn't want to be disrespectful to his elders

  63. and jump in.

  64. But he soon forgets that and he jumps in.

  65. Finally, in chapter 38,

  66. after Elihu's gone on this long monologue,

  67. God himself speaks.

  68. And in chapter 38, verse 2,

  69. he criticizes those who have spoken words

  70. without knowledge.

  71. And in one of the most remarkable descriptions

  72. of his work of creation,

  73. God paints a picture

  74. of his unique and sovereign power.

  75. In these chapters,

  76. he considers the many things he has made

  77. from the sea to the stars,

  78. from the ostriches to the oxen.

  79. And then at the beginning of chapter 40,

  80. God speaks to Job directly.

  81. Will the one who contends with the Almighty

  82. correct him?

  83. Let the one who accuses God answer him.

  84. In other words,

  85. who are you to question me?

  86. Did you put the stars in their place?

  87. Did you create the oxen?

  88. And Job's response to that is very simple.

  89. Have a look there in chapter 40,

  90. verses 4 and 5.

  91. I am unworthy.

  92. How can I reply to you?

  93. I put my hand over my mouth.

  94. I spoke once,

  95. but I have no answer twice.

  96. But I will say no more.

  97. God replies to him in verse 8,

  98. Would you discredit my justice?

  99. This is the very thing

  100. that Job's been crying out for

  101. the whole way through the book.

  102. Would you discredit my justice?

  103. Would you condemn me

  104. to justifying yourself?

  105. Do you have an arm like God's?

  106. And can your voice thunder like his?

  107. Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor

  108. and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.

  109. Unleash the fury of your wrath.

  110. In the remainder of chapters 40 and 41,

  111. God continues to instruct Job

  112. and the others about who he is.

  113. Have a look there in chapter 41,

  114. verses 10 and 11.

  115. This is sort of the summary of it.

  116. Who then is able to stand against me?

  117. Who has a claim against me

  118. that I must pay?

  119. Everything under heaven belongs to me.

  120. You see what he's saying?

  121. I am the owner of it all

  122. and I am no man's debtor.

  123. I don't owe anyone anything.

  124. And at the beginning of chapter 42,

  125. very last chapter,

  126. we have Job's response

  127. to God's mighty self-revelation.

  128. And notice there at the beginning of chapter 42,

  129. Job doesn't say,

  130. Oh, now I understand.

  131. Oh, now I get it.

  132. Now all the questions have been answered

  133. and I get the big picture now.

  134. Verse 2,

  135. I know that you can do all things

  136. and no plan of yours can be thwarted.

  137. You see, Job is finally assured

  138. that God's power and justice are in fact established

  139. across all of the creation.

  140. Even though his specific questions of why

  141. have not been addressed by God,

  142. he is content with what he has heard

  143. from the mouth of God.

  144. His contentment is revealed

  145. as he summarizes God's argument

  146. and throws it back at God.

  147. In verse 3,

  148. You asked,

  149. Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge

  150. and without even trying to justify himself at all?

  151. Job responds in the second half of verse 3

  152. See what he's saying there?

  153. Even if you answered my questions,

  154. you are so great,

  155. I would not understand the answers.

  156. Even if you told me the reason,

  157. I couldn't comprehend it.

  158. And his contentment comes from who God is,

  159. not from God's explanation of himself.

  160. Now there is no doubt

  161. that God's reply to Job's questioning

  162. is powerful and it is overwhelming.

  163. But,

  164. it is not destructive.

  165. There has been a massive self-disclosure by God

  166. and as a result of God's revelation,

  167. Job now sees

  168. that human events are part of a cosmic whole.

  169. Job now sees the intimate connection

  170. between God and his world.

  171. He has a new appreciation of the scope

  172. and the harmony of God's creation,

  173. of which he is but just a teeny, teeny part.

  174. The world is both beautiful and terrifying

  175. and God is in it everywhere,

  176. seen to be powerful and wise.

  177. He now sees God's careful

  178. and detailed superintendence of his world.

  179. And so all mechanical views of God

  180. and his power and his sovereignty

  181. have been pushed aside by Job.

  182. God's sovereignty is not something to be argued about

  183. and theologized about.

  184. It is the very basis of his survival.

  185. Job now knows God differently.

  186. You see it there in verse 5

  187. of chapter 42.

  188. You see Job here contrasts his presence,

  189. seeing of God

  190. with what he had only heard of God in the past.

  191. There is a greater knowledge

  192. and intimacy with God.

  193. Do you remember what Job's hope was back in...

  194. I know it's a long way to think back.

  195. Back into chapter 19.

  196. Job's hope back in chapter 19 was this.

  197. Let me read it to you.

  198. He says,

  199. His heart was burning to see God.

  200. And here in chapter 42,

  201. he says,

  202. Now I have seen God.

  203. His desire to see God

  204. is partly fulfilled here in chapter 42.

  205. You see, he longs to see God in the flesh

  206. and he will through his Redeemer.

  207. His Redeemer means that

  208. when his flesh rots,

  209. when he dies

  210. and his Redeemer brings him into the presence of God,

  211. he will see God physically.

  212. But right now he says

  213. that he has seen God

  214. through God's self-revelation

  215. by his word.

  216. God has spoken to Job

  217. and he has seen God

  218. in his word.

  219. Job has been overwhelmed

  220. by the gracious presence of God

  221. through his word

  222. and what he has revealed about himself

  223. and his purposes.

  224. Ironically,

  225. now that God has revealed himself to Job

  226. and that God has made himself known,

  227. he is much more mysterious to Job now

  228. than what he was before.

  229. much more mysterious

  230. than when he was dimly discerned

  231. and theologized about.

  232. It's interesting,

  233. when I first became a Christian

  234. and, you know,

  235. I knew the gospel

  236. because I knew two ways to live

  237. and I figured that was

  238. kind of all that you need to know.

  239. And so when I read passages

  240. about the mystery of Christ,

  241. I used to think,

  242. what mystery?

  243. I know Christ,

  244. I know what he's done,

  245. there's no mystery there.

  246. And 18 years later,

  247. there is a whole lot more mystery there

  248. as God has slowly

  249. and gradually revealed himself

  250. through his word to me.

  251. There's a lot more mystery now

  252. than what there used to be.

  253. Job has received

  254. a great revelation of God

  255. and he is delighted to see God.

  256. But,

  257. he is also ashamed.

  258. He has seen the magnificence of God

  259. and so he bows in humility

  260. in verse 6.

  261. Therefore,

  262. I despise myself

  263. and I repent

  264. in dust and ashes.

  265. That verse,

  266. right there,

  267. that is the wise life.

  268. He's finally arrived at wisdom.

  269. Job has grown in wisdom.

  270. He has grown in wisdom

  271. because he has grown

  272. in relationship with God.

  273. He sees God for who he is

  274. and with that now,

  275. he understands himself

  276. and so,

  277. the response is

  278. repentance.

  279. That's wisdom.

  280. He, in fact,

  281. treasures God

  282. more than the answers

  283. that God will give him.

  284. Now,

  285. let's not get confused here.

  286. Job's three mates

  287. weren't right after all.

  288. Job is not now

  289. finally admitting

  290. to a life of hidden sin

  291. that resulted in his suffering.

  292. What he is repenting of

  293. is the demanding

  294. that God give him

  295. a thorough answer

  296. to the reason

  297. for his suffering.

  298. It was a fault

  299. to be corrected,

  300. not a sin

  301. that need punishing

  302. because Job

  303. doesn't actually

  304. confess any sin here.

  305. A better way

  306. to understand it

  307. is instead of

  308. Job repented,

  309. a better use

  310. is Job

  311. relented

  312. is, in fact,

  313. a better translation

  314. of the word.

  315. It's like

  316. I'm at a bakery, right?

  317. I'm there to buy

  318. some bread

  319. and in the corner

  320. of my eye

  321. I see an apple slice

  322. and it's $3

  323. and I get a glint

  324. in my eye

  325. and I start justifying

  326. the fact it's $3,

  327. that's a good deal

  328. and it's only one slice,

  329. it can't hurt you.

  330. I mean,

  331. it's apple after all,

  332. we're meant to eat fruit.

  333. But there's a lot

  334. of sugar in it as well

  335. and that's not good

  336. for a diabetic.

  337. But surely it's balanced out

  338. by the goodness

  339. of the apple.

  340. And then I think,

  341. no, stop,

  342. enough.

  343. I'm not going to get it.

  344. I relent

  345. of the course of action

  346. I was heading towards.

  347. I hadn't done

  348. anything wrong

  349. up until that point.

  350. But I was edging

  351. towards a decision

  352. that would have been

  353. bad for me

  354. and it's that kind

  355. of idea

  356. when it talks

  357. about Job

  358. repenting.

  359. Job relented,

  360. if you like.

  361. He realized

  362. that he was walking

  363. down a path

  364. that would have led

  365. him to conclude

  366. that God

  367. has done wrong.

  368. But what Job

  369. has realized

  370. is that he's dealing

  371. with a God

  372. who speaks

  373. about planets

  374. and stars

  375. like they are

  376. decorations

  377. on a Christmas tree

  378. to be arranged

  379. and played

  380. with

  381. at his will.

  382. Job has finally

  383. seen God

  384. for who he is

  385. and he's saying,

  386. he's not saying here,

  387. I haven't been

  388. beaten into submission.

  389. I have just

  390. finally realized

  391. who it is

  392. that I'm dealing

  393. with.

  394. And Job

  395. finally finds

  396. comfort.

  397. It's as if

  398. the contentment

  399. which has eluded

  400. him for so long

  401. has been found

  402. in submitting

  403. himself to

  404. this God.

  405. Job has found

  406. peace with God

  407. and it's through

  408. humble submission

  409. to God.

  410. and that's

  411. wisdom.

  412. That's wisdom.

  413. And Job's mates

  414. are about to

  415. grow in wisdom

  416. too.

  417. Have a look

  418. there in verse

  419. 7.

  420. After the Lord

  421. had said these

  422. things to Job,

  423. he said to Eliphaz,

  424. I am angry

  425. with you

  426. and your two

  427. friends because

  428. you have not

  429. spoken to me

  430. what is right

  431. as my servant

  432. Job has.

  433. So now

  434. take seven

  435. bulls and seven

  436. rams and go

  437. to my servant

  438. Job and

  439. sacrifice a

  440. burnt offering

  441. for yourselves.

  442. My servant

  443. Job will pray

  444. for you and

  445. I will accept

  446. his prayer and

  447. not deal with

  448. you according

  449. to your folly.

  450. You have not

  451. spoken of me

  452. what is right

  453. as my servant

  454. Job has.

  455. So Eliphaz,

  456. Bildad and

  457. Zophar did

  458. what the Lord

  459. told them

  460. and the Lord

  461. accepted Job's

  462. prayer.

  463. You see

  464. right through

  465. this book

  466. from chapter

  467. three onwards

  468. Job's longing

  469. was for his

  470. day in court

  471. so that he

  472. would be

  473. vindicated

  474. and in those

  475. verses Job's

  476. vindicated.

  477. It's finally

  478. come.

  479. In verse

  480. eight we see

  481. that God

  482. still regards

  483. him as he

  484. did back in

  485. chapter one

  486. and two.

  487. He calls him

  488. here my

  489. servant.

  490. verse seven

  491. has God

  492. saying that

  493. it is Job

  494. who has in

  495. fact spoken

  496. right of

  497. him.

  498. No matter

  499. how foolish

  500. he may have

  501. said it,

  502. Job was

  503. looking for

  504. a God

  505. big enough

  506. to comprehend

  507. his suffering

  508. experience.

  509. And on the

  510. other hand,

  511. however eloquently

  512. they have

  513. spoken,

  514. his friends

  515. were upholding

  516. a God

  517. small enough

  518. to conform

  519. it to their

  520. minds.

  521. And there

  522. is one

  523. very subtle

  524. but very

  525. big difference

  526. between Job

  527. and his

  528. friends.

  529. Get this.

  530. His mates

  531. were always

  532. talking about

  533. God.

  534. But Job

  535. in talking

  536. about God

  537. keeps turning

  538. to God.

  539. God

  540. is

  541. the

  542. difference

  543. between

  544. theologizing

  545. and

  546. relationship.

  547. God's

  548. assessment

  549. is that

  550. they had

  551. not spoken

  552. what is

  553. right about

  554. him.

  555. And my

  556. friends,

  557. let's be

  558. very clear

  559. about that,

  560. that statement

  561. right there

  562. ought to

  563. come crashing

  564. down on us

  565. right now.

  566. Right now.

  567. As we are

  568. gathered in

  569. the middle

  570. of corporate

  571. worship,

  572. right now,

  573. in the

  574. last 55

  575. minutes,

  576. we have

  577. spoken of

  578. God and

  579. to God

  580. in corporate

  581. worship and

  582. how easily

  583. we babble

  584. stuff about

  585. God without

  586. giving any

  587. thought to the

  588. fact that our

  589. words will be

  590. weighed by

  591. God.

  592. God

  593. is

  594. weighed by

  595. God.

  596. And what is

  597. weighed is not

  598. just the

  599. correctness of

  600. what we say

  601. and what we

  602. sing and

  603. what we

  604. pray.

  605. speaking of

  606. God demands

  607. great care of

  608. us so that

  609. we do not

  610. distort,

  611. trivialize,

  612. or pervert

  613. what is

  614. true about

  615. the God

  616. who will

  617. weigh our

  618. words.

  619. His

  620. mates were

  621. wrong about

  622. God with

  623. their simplistic

  624. tit-for-tat

  625. merit theology.

  626. theology.

  627. They have

  628. not allowed

  629. for the

  630. mystery and

  631. the majesty

  632. of God

  633. and crucially

  634. their tit-for-tat

  635. view of God

  636. leaves no

  637. room for a

  638. forgiving,

  639. gracious,

  640. and merciful

  641. God.

  642. That's the

  643. thing that gets

  644. dropped out

  645. in their

  646. theology,

  647. the grace

  648. of God.

  649. The roles

  650. are now

  651. reversed as

  652. Joe's

  653. vindication

  654. goes public

  655. in the

  656. course of

  657. their speeches.

  658. Not one of

  659. Joe's mates

  660. ever hinted

  661. that they

  662. might be

  663. the object

  664. of God's

  665. anger and

  666. in need of

  667. his grace.

  668. And it is a

  669. delightful

  670. irony that

  671. they now

  672. need grace

  673. from the

  674. God who

  675. in their

  676. theologizing

  677. was not

  678. big enough

  679. to be

  680. gracious to

  681. the wicked.

  682. And it is a

  683. further

  684. delightful

  685. irony that

  686. grace must

  687. be mediated

  688. by the

  689. very one

  690. that they

  691. had treated

  692. as in

  693. such need

  694. of their

  695. spiritual

  696. resources.

  697. And so

  698. here is

  699. Job's final

  700. trial in

  701. the book.

  702. This is

  703. Job's final

  704. trial of

  705. wisdom,

  706. his last

  707. test.

  708. Will he

  709. lay down

  710. the weapons

  711. of revenge

  712. and accept

  713. the terms

  714. of God's

  715. treaty and

  716. extend forgiveness

  717. and fellowship

  718. to his three

  719. friends in

  720. the way that

  721. God has?

  722. Will he

  723. say,

  724. you got

  725. what you

  726. deserved?

  727. And play

  728. into their

  729. tit-for-tat

  730. theology?

  731. And reveal

  732. that he's

  733. learned nothing?

  734. Or will

  735. he find

  736. his vindication

  737. in God

  738. and humbly

  739. intervene for

  740. his friends

  741. who have

  742. treated him

  743. so badly?

  744. There's a

  745. whole lot of

  746. application just

  747. there.

  748. We see at

  749. the end of

  750. verse 9 that

  751. Job has in

  752. fact grown in

  753. wisdom.

  754. The Lord

  755. accepted Job's

  756. prayer.

  757. The drama

  758. ends with

  759. the massive

  760. restoration of

  761. Job.

  762. His wealth

  763. is restored.

  764. He is given

  765. a new family

  766. and all the

  767. old honour

  768. which is

  769. held previously

  770. is restored.

  771. And in fact,

  772. everything is

  773. increased dramatically

  774. for Job.

  775. Don't you just

  776. love the

  777. happy ending

  778. of Job?

  779. It's like a

  780. Hollywood ending

  781. except for those

  782. movies like

  783. Arlington Road

  784. which don't have

  785. the Hollywood

  786. ending where

  787. the bad guys

  788. win and the

  789. good guys

  790. don't.

  791. You go,

  792. oh that's

  793. bad.

  794. It makes

  795. you feel

  796. awful.

  797. But don't

  798. you think

  799. there's something

  800. really strange

  801. about the

  802. way this

  803. book ends?

  804. The ending

  805. of Job is

  806. frustrating,

  807. happy and

  808. confusing all

  809. at the same

  810. time.

  811. It is

  812. frustrating

  813. because there

  814. are so many

  815. loose ends

  816. that need to

  817. be cleared

  818. up.

  819. You see,

  820. Job's three

  821. mates get put

  822. in their

  823. place but what

  824. about the

  825. young punk

  826. Elihu?

  827. Nothing's

  828. ever said of

  829. him.

  830. And what

  831. about Satan?

  832. He's such a

  833. major player

  834. there in the

  835. first couple

  836. of chapters,

  837. he doesn't

  838. even get a

  839. mention at

  840. the end.

  841. None of

  842. Job's questions

  843. about suffering

  844. ever get

  845. answered and

  846. let's be honest,

  847. they're the

  848. sort of

  849. questions that

  850. we have and

  851. want answers

  852. to.

  853. But it is

  854. also a happy

  855. ending because

  856. things work

  857. out the way

  858. we want them

  859. to work

  860. out.

  861. You see it

  862. there in

  863. verse 12,

  864. the Lord

  865. blessed the

  866. latter part of

  867. Job's life

  868. more than

  869. the first.

  870. Family,

  871. wealth,

  872. health,

  873. they're all

  874. back and

  875. the last

  876. sentence leaves

  877. us with a

  878. feeling of

  879. just completeness

  880. of life and

  881. so he died

  882. old and full

  883. of years.

  884. happiness.

  885. But the

  886. happiness of

  887. the ending

  888. contributes to

  889. the confusion.

  890. Up until

  891. now the

  892. book has

  893. been saying

  894. that Job's

  895. mates are

  896. wrong because

  897. their life is

  898. so neat,

  899. their theology

  900. is so neat,

  901. innocent

  902. suffering can

  903. happen and

  904. good people

  905. don't necessarily

  906. have good

  907. things happen

  908. to them.

  909. And yet all

  910. of a sudden,

  911. here at the

  912. end of the

  913. book, Job

  914. repents or

  915. he relents

  916. and good

  917. things happen

  918. to him

  919. again.

  920. So were

  921. Job's

  922. friends right?

  923. Job has

  924. been vindicated

  925. by God and

  926. now we see

  927. God doing

  928. good things for

  929. a good person.

  930. I mean,

  931. come on!

  932. God

  933. and so

  934. with the

  935. end of the

  936. book,

  937. we are

  938. left with

  939. the same

  940. confusion

  941. that we

  942. had at

  943. the beginning

  944. and such

  945. is the

  946. experience of

  947. life.

  948. It is the

  949. mysterious

  950. aspect of

  951. life that

  952. takes us

  953. right to

  954. the heart

  955. of what

  956. the whole

  957. book of

  958. this Job

  959. is about

  960. and so

  961. what we

  962. need to

  963. do as

  964. a final

  965. point,

  966. we need

  967. to see

  968. the end

  969. of the

  970. book of

  971. Job in

  972. light of

  973. it all,

  974. the whole

  975. lot.

  976. What was

  977. Job's

  978. major issue

  979. in the

  980. book?

  981. It wasn't

  982. so much

  983. tell me

  984. why I'm

  985. suffering,

  986. his major

  987. issue,

  988. give me my

  989. day in

  990. court that I

  991. might be

  992. vindicated.

  993. my integrity

  994. is at stake.

  995. That's his

  996. issue.

  997. And one

  998. of the

  999. points that

  1000. we find

  1001. here at

  1002. Job is

  1003. it's finally

  1004. brought to

  1005. bear,

  1006. in the

  1007. end the

  1008. people of

  1009. God are

  1010. vindicated.

  1011. God is

  1012. a just

  1013. God.

  1014. Life has

  1015. purpose and

  1016. meaning,

  1017. life is not

  1018. random,

  1019. God is a

  1020. merciful God

  1021. and he

  1022. does not

  1023. ask his

  1024. people to

  1025. suffer without

  1026. vindication.

  1027. He doesn't

  1028. call us

  1029. into self

  1030. denial and

  1031. sacrifice

  1032. without the

  1033. promise of

  1034. heaven.

  1035. Evil might

  1036. be mysterious

  1037. right now

  1038. but the

  1039. point of the

  1040. end of Job

  1041. is that it

  1042. won't be

  1043. triumphant

  1044. in the

  1045. end.

  1046. Evil

  1047. won't be

  1048. triumphant.

  1049. Christians are

  1050. not spiritual

  1051. masochists who

  1052. find pleasure

  1053. and fulfilment

  1054. in suffering.

  1055. If there is

  1056. any delight in

  1057. suffering,

  1058. it is that we

  1059. delight in

  1060. following the

  1061. Lord Jesus

  1062. who suffered.

  1063. Even the

  1064. Lord Jesus

  1065. did not

  1066. delight in

  1067. suffering.

  1068. Hebrews 12

  1069. tells us that

  1070. the pioneer

  1071. and the

  1072. perfecter of

  1073. our faith

  1074. was the

  1075. one who

  1076. for the

  1077. joy set

  1078. before him

  1079. endured the

  1080. cross scorning

  1081. its shame

  1082. and sat down

  1083. at the right

  1084. hand of the

  1085. throne of God.

  1086. The joy that

  1087. was before him

  1088. was the

  1089. presence of

  1090. his father

  1091. in heaven

  1092. and that

  1093. is why he

  1094. endured the

  1095. suffering of

  1096. the cross.

  1097. Suffering was

  1098. not the

  1099. end and

  1100. the end of

  1101. Job confirms

  1102. that suffering

  1103. will not be

  1104. the end.

  1105. Justification and

  1106. vindication and

  1107. restoration will

  1108. come and it

  1109. will be better

  1110. than before.

  1111. It will be

  1112. final.

  1113. It will be

  1114. complete.

  1115. It will be

  1116. eternal.

  1117. The end of

  1118. Job does not

  1119. promise that

  1120. it will

  1121. happen now

  1122. but it

  1123. does confirm

  1124. the character

  1125. of a good

  1126. and compassionate

  1127. and merciful

  1128. God

  1129. who will

  1130. restore

  1131. all things.

  1132. James 5

  1133. tells us

  1134. what the

  1135. stance of

  1136. the Christian

  1137. should be

  1138. while we

  1139. wait for the

  1140. day of

  1141. vindication.

  1142. it is to

  1143. stand firm

  1144. in faith

  1145. in the

  1146. one who

  1147. has perfected

  1148. our faith.

  1149. Be patient

  1150. then brothers

  1151. and sisters

  1152. until the

  1153. Lord's coming.

  1154. See how the

  1155. farmer waits

  1156. for the land

  1157. to yield

  1158. his valuable

  1159. crop and

  1160. how patient

  1161. he is for

  1162. the autumn

  1163. and spring

  1164. rains.

  1165. You too

  1166. be patient

  1167. and stand

  1168. firm because

  1169. the Lord's

  1170. coming is

  1171. near.

  1172. Don't grumble

  1173. against each

  1174. other brothers

  1175. or you

  1176. will be

  1177. judged.

  1178. The judge

  1179. is standing

  1180. at the

  1181. door.

  1182. Brothers

  1183. as an

  1184. example

  1185. of patience

  1186. in the

  1187. face of

  1188. suffering

  1189. take the

  1190. prophets

  1191. who spoke

  1192. in the

  1193. name of

  1194. the Lord.

  1195. As you

  1196. know

  1197. we consider

  1198. blessed

  1199. those who

  1200. have

  1201. persevered.

  1202. You

  1203. have heard

  1204. of Job's

  1205. perseverance

  1206. and have

  1207. seen what

  1208. the Lord

  1209. finally brought

  1210. about.

  1211. The Lord

  1212. is full

  1213. of compassion

  1214. and mercy.

  1215. Both Job

  1216. and James

  1217. call us

  1218. to stand

  1219. firm in

  1220. Christ in

  1221. the face

  1222. of suffering

  1223. and one

  1224. of the

  1225. important

  1226. lessons here

  1227. is the

  1228. need for

  1229. us to

  1230. turn to

  1231. God in

  1232. the face

  1233. of suffering.

  1234. Don't just

  1235. theologize

  1236. about him

  1237. but to

  1238. turn to

  1239. him

  1240. turn to

  1241. his word

  1242. to seek

  1243. his face

  1244. to seek

  1245. his revelation

  1246. of himself

  1247. to cry

  1248. out to

  1249. him in

  1250. tears

  1251. until you

  1252. are able

  1253. to say

  1254. we Job

  1255. I see

  1256. him

  1257. I see

  1258. him

  1259. oh that

  1260. we might

  1261. see him

  1262. until we

  1263. see him.

  1264. May the

  1265. Lord grant

  1266. us grace

  1267. to learn

  1268. that while

  1269. his ways

  1270. may not

  1271. be our

  1272. ways and

  1273. his thoughts

  1274. may not

  1275. be our

  1276. thoughts

  1277. yet they

  1278. are the

  1279. wisest of

  1280. all and

  1281. his ways

  1282. are full

  1283. of mercy.

  1284. So stand

  1285. firm

  1286. persevere

  1287. be patient

  1288. until the

  1289. Lord comes.

  1290. Job

  1291. affirms

  1292. that in

  1293. the confusion

  1294. and the

  1295. uncertainty

  1296. of life

  1297. and the

  1298. pain

  1299. and the

  1300. tears

  1301. the Lord

  1302. is in

  1303. fact

  1304. good

  1305. and to

  1306. live well

  1307. is to

  1308. fear him

  1309. because the

  1310. Lord is

  1311. full of

  1312. compassion

  1313. and mercy.

  1314. Let's

  1315. pray.

  1316. Father who

  1317. am I to

  1318. say these

  1319. things about

  1320. you?

  1321. Father we

  1322. pray that

  1323. we would

  1324. cling to

  1325. you in

  1326. the moments

  1327. of trial

  1328. we pray

  1329. Father that

  1330. you would

  1331. rescue us

  1332. if we are

  1333. trivialising

  1334. you

  1335. perverting

  1336. you

  1337. and what

  1338. you have

  1339. revealed about

  1340. yourself

  1341. Lord we

  1342. pray that

  1343. you would

  1344. rescue us

  1345. from babbling

  1346. and theologising

  1347. about you

  1348. we pray that

  1349. we might be

  1350. a church that

  1351. speaks true

  1352. things about

  1353. you

  1354. that we

  1355. might humbly

  1356. submit to

  1357. you

  1358. that we

  1359. might treasure

  1360. you

  1361. that we

  1362. might turn

  1363. to you

  1364. Father we

  1365. pray that

  1366. you would

  1367. grow us

  1368. in wisdom

  1369. that we

  1370. might fear

  1371. you the

  1372. Lord of

  1373. compassion and

  1374. mercy and we

  1375. ask it for

  1376. your glory

  1377. Amen
