  1. That is a fairly complicated psalm, which we're going to have some fun with.

  2. I don't know what your first reaction is when you hear that read out.

  3. You might be a little bit uncomfortable, particularly with a few verses in there

  4. where David calls down God's fiery anger on his enemies.

  5. You might be excited.

  6. You might think, finally, I've got biblical evidence that it's okay to call down God's judgment on those who I don't like.

  7. But the question has to be kind of lingering for us.

  8. What do we do with something like that?

  9. It doesn't seem to fit with the message of Christianity that we talk about,

  10. the call to love our enemy, the mercy and grace that God shows.

  11. So what is a psalm like this teaching us?

  12. We can't just kind of skip over those six or seven verses that are a little bit uncomfortable.

  13. We actually have to wrestle with them because they're not the only verses that say something like this in the Bible.

  14. So the question we've got to ask is, what are they doing there?

  15. Are they telling us that it's okay to pray down judgment?

  16. And I'm sure you're sitting there nervously saying, no, it can't be that.

  17. But if it's not that, what is it teaching us?

  18. So for us to wrestle with that, I want to pray and ask God to help us have his mind on his word.

  19. So please join me as we pray.

  20. Father God, I want to thank you for your word and I thank you that you give it to us so that we might know you better.

  21. Lord, I pray that as we wrestle with a difficult passage that you would keep us from bringing our own ideas to the passage,

  22. but that we would come teachable and humble and ready to hear you speak.

  23. Lord, I pray that the result of wrestling with something like this would be that we see you more clearly,

  24. that we have a bigger picture of who you are.

  25. And I pray that by your spirit, you would illuminate your word and shape our hearts,

  26. that we might love you more and honor you more with the lives that you've given us.

  27. Amen.

  28. Okay, Psalm in front of you, Psalm 69.

  29. The first thing that we need to understand and grab from this Psalm is that it's a Psalm of David.

  30. It's there right in the title.

  31. It's of David.

  32. And David is the king.

  33. He's God's anointed leader for the people.

  34. And he is facing some sort of severe persecution.

  35. The Psalm doesn't go into heaps of detail about what that is, but it's severe.

  36. You can see it as he goes through.

  37. He's nearly overwhelmed.

  38. The waters are reaching up to his neck.

  39. The mud's dragging him down.

  40. There's no way out.

  41. He's worn out from crying out for help.

  42. He's exhausted, waiting for God's deliverance.

  43. And more numerous than the hairs on his head are the people who hate him and seek to destroy him.

  44. And three times in the first four verses, in fact, particularly in verse four,

  45. David explains that his suffering, what he's going through, is unjust, is unfair.

  46. It's not his fault.

  47. If you have a look at verse four,

  48. Now, it's not that David is saying,

  49. I'm perfect and anything bad that happens to me is unfair because of all the characters in the Bible,

  50. David's epic failures are probably more documented than others.

  51. But he's saying that this issue here is not to do with him.

  52. This is not a Bathsheba problem.

  53. This is not something that David's done that has brought on the fire upon him.

  54. Because he acknowledges that he's not perfect in verse five.

  55. He says,

  56. You know my folly, O God.

  57. My guilt is not hidden from you.

  58. But he is saying,

  59. But I am innocent of this.

  60. This suffering that I'm facing right now, it's not my fault.

  61. And from that position of despair and being overwhelmed, David cries out to God there in verse one.

  62. That's the point of the whole psalm.

  63. Save me, O God.

  64. And that just builds momentum as we go through all 36 verses.

  65. That is David's heart's desire that he would be saved from this circumstance and opposition that he is facing.

  66. But there's something about that salvation that David wants that we need to wrestle with.

  67. We need to actually understand what is it that is driving his cry for salvation.

  68. Because it might not be what we first think.

  69. Have a look at verse nine with me.

  70. Because in verse nine, David actually expresses what it is that's causing him such anguish.

  71. He articulates his frustration.

  72. And it's there.

  73. It says in verse nine,

  74. Zeal for your house consumes me.

  75. And the insults of those who insult you fall on me.

  76. He's talking to God here.

  77. David says,

  78. I'm consumed with a passion for you and for your name.

  79. It's the relationship that David has with God that is causing people to persecute and oppose him.

  80. That is the basis for the hatred that he receives from his enemies.

  81. See, his enemies hate God.

  82. And David is the person that they can see as representative of God.

  83. So he becomes the object of their hatred.

  84. The insults aimed at David's heavenly father fall squarely on his shoulders.

  85. It's not dissimilar to a story that I was told recently about a man who was found guilty of a crime in Spain.

  86. This man was born in Britain.

  87. He was an American citizen.

  88. But in Spain, he was convicted of a crime that everybody knew he hadn't done.

  89. People were aware that he was innocent.

  90. But he was convicted and sentenced to firing squad.

  91. Now, at this point, the British embassy and the American embassy came out and said,

  92. If you shoot this man, we'll declare war on you.

  93. And when the day came for his firing squad,

  94. the two ambassadors came out and draped the flag of America and the flag of Britain around him

  95. and said, If you fire a shot, we'll declare war.

  96. And sure enough, the firing squad turned around and walked away.

  97. But in the same way that that man was representative of those nations at that particular point,

  98. David here is representative of God.

  99. He is God's king.

  100. He's the leader of God's people.

  101. And so when they see David,

  102. they see an opportunity to vent their hatred and opposition towards God.

  103. And so when David, in verse 13, returns to his quest for salvation,

  104. his cry for rescue and redemption is a cry for God's name to be vindicated.

  105. See, as David gets attacked, he feels this burden,

  106. not because his own character is under fire,

  107. not because his own name is being dragged through the mud.

  108. His fear is that God's name is being shamed.

  109. His fear is that somehow God would be found guilty

  110. or God's people would be found guilty.

  111. And so he eagerly desires that he would be delivered

  112. because these enemies of his are his enemies because they're God's enemies.

  113. And he bears their hatred and their shame for the sake of his God.

  114. David's in anguish not for his own comfort,

  115. but because of God's name and God's reputation.

  116. David is wounded by the rejection that God is facing.

  117. You've got to understand this here,

  118. that David's pain in these verses, and it's significant.

  119. There is this sense that it's almost beyond hope.

  120. And this is because his God is under fire.

  121. This is not a personal protection issue.

  122. This is him carrying the burden for the holy name of his holy God.

  123. And so it's from that context that we come back to these verses

  124. that make us feel a bit uncomfortable and we need to look at them again.

  125. I want you to have a look at verse 22

  126. because we will probably take the rest of the psalm and think,

  127. fantastic, God save your people when they're hurting.

  128. But it's this bit that we need to wrestle with.

  129. And it's David with a deep concern for his father's holy name

  130. who articulates these words.

  131. Speaking of his enemies, he says,

  132. May the table set before them become a snare.

  133. May it become retribution and a trap.

  134. May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see

  135. and their backs be bent forever.

  136. Pour out your wrath on them.

  137. Let your fierce anger overtake them.

  138. May their place be deserted.

  139. Let there be no one to dwell in their tents,

  140. for they persecute those you wound

  141. and talk about the pain of those you hurt.

  142. Charge them with crime upon crime.

  143. Do not let them share in your salvation.

  144. May they be blotted out of the book of life

  145. and not be listed with the righteous.

  146. I don't think that there is a harsher word

  147. that David could have spoken.

  148. I can't even begin to comprehend a circumstance in my life

  149. where I would utter these words

  150. against even my most hated enemy.

  151. David is praying that God would direct his fierce, jealous wrath

  152. on these enemies,

  153. that they might be destroyed,

  154. that they might be blotted out.

  155. But here's the key.

  156. David is not asking for revenge.

  157. David is not asking God to destroy David's enemies

  158. because they have hurt David.

  159. David is asking for justice against God's enemies.

  160. That is his heart's desire.

  161. Not that David would win,

  162. but that God's enemies would receive what they deserve.

  163. See, this psalm is a psalm about God's name.

  164. It's a psalm about God's reputation.

  165. And David is God's representative.

  166. And so as he endures the hatred and scorn

  167. that is directed at his God,

  168. even David's plea for salvation

  169. is actually a plea for God

  170. to vindicate his own character.

  171. In verse 1, when David says,

  172. save me, O God,

  173. his heart's desire,

  174. you can see it as we work through the psalm,

  175. is that God's name,

  176. the result of him being saved,

  177. the point of him being saved

  178. is that people would realize

  179. that God is powerful and just

  180. and mighty and righteous to judge.

  181. Now I know we get nervous

  182. when we talk about the wrath of God.

  183. There's that sense that we need to water it down

  184. with God's love.

  185. But David is simply asking

  186. that those who hate God

  187. get what they deserve.

  188. That's all he's asking for.

  189. David is saying,

  190. I am your chosen representative on the earth, God.

  191. I'm the one you anointed to be king

  192. and leader of your people.

  193. And if they reject me,

  194. they are rejecting you.

  195. And so please give them what they deserve.

  196. What you said you were going to give them.

  197. It's right that those who oppose God

  198. and reject his representative

  199. face judgment.

  200. That's right.

  201. That's fair.

  202. That's correct.

  203. Because if you reject the Savior,

  204. then all that's left

  205. is the wrath

  206. that you could have been saved from.

  207. It's like a man walking by a river

  208. who falls into the river.

  209. The river begins to pick up momentum

  210. and soon enough he realizes

  211. that the momentum

  212. is because there's a waterfall up ahead.

  213. If that man chooses to ignore

  214. the safety rope that is thrown to him,

  215. then the waterfall is a fair enough result

  216. for that individual.

  217. In the same way,

  218. if people choose to reject

  219. the Savior that God offers,

  220. then the destruction

  221. is a fair and right outcome.

  222. The New Testament quotes

  223. this difficult section

  224. in Psalm 69 twice

  225. to show us

  226. just how just it is.

  227. The first one comes in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  228. And verse 25 of Psalm 69 is quoted.

  229. Verse 25 says,

  230. May their place be deserted.

  231. Let there be no one to dwell in their tents.

  232. When that comes into the New Testament,

  233. do you know who it's talking about?

  234. Judas.

  235. The disciple who betrayed Jesus

  236. for 30 pieces of silver.

  237. When we think Judas,

  238. we think that is right.

  239. He deserves to be judged.

  240. He betrayed his Savior

  241. from right under his nose.

  242. From the inner group

  243. who spent time and traveled with Jesus,

  244. God's wrath deserves

  245. to be poured out on Judas.

  246. The second quote of this section

  247. comes in Romans chapter 11

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  248. and it's a bigger chunk.

  249. And here Paul quotes the passage

  250. pointing to the Jews

  251. who have rejected Jesus

  252. as God's Savior.

  253. Now Paul's not looking for revenge

  254. on the Jews

  255. because Paul himself is a Jew.

  256. And Paul expresses his desire

  257. that the Jews would come to faith in Jesus.

  258. But he's saying

  259. if you reject God's anointed one,

  260. in this case Jesus,

  261. if you reject the Savior

  262. that he offers you,

  263. then it is right and fair and just

  264. that you receive the wrath

  265. that all creation deserves.

  266. Paul is simply saying

  267. the Jews are in the river

  268. and they are ignoring

  269. the life rope of Jesus

  270. and so it is inevitable

  271. that they will face the judgment.

  272. See, David is not crying out

  273. in this psalm

  274. because of his own suffering.

  275. He is driven by a zeal

  276. for God's house.

  277. By a desire that God's name

  278. would not be trampled by men,

  279. that it would not be okay

  280. for people to ignore him,

  281. pretend like he doesn't matter.

  282. David is grieved by sin

  283. because that's what sin is

  284. at its core.

  285. It's a rejection of God,

  286. a rejection of Jesus

  287. as King and Savior.

  288. And David isn't saying,

  289. God, make me strong

  290. so I can beat my enemies.

  291. He's saying,

  292. God, you're God.

  293. You're my God.

  294. I'm your representative.

  295. These are your enemies.

  296. Pour out your wrath

  297. like you said you would.

  298. And this is really,

  299. really important.

  300. God has already promised

  301. Abraham,

  302. way back in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  303. that he would judge those

  304. who rejected his people.

  305. I want you to flick back

  306. with me to Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  307. really quickly.

  308. Keep your finger in Psalm 69

  309. so that you're there,

  310. ready to go.

  311. But Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  312. is the promises

  313. that God makes to Abraham,

  314. who's David's great,

  315. great, great, great, great,

  316. great, great, etc.,

  317. grandfather.

  318. And the promises

  319. that God makes to Abraham

  320. are the basis

  321. for Israel's relationship

  322. with God.

  323. They're the basis

  324. for David's relationship

  325. with God.

  326. They define what

  327. that interaction looks like.

  328. And in verse 3

  329. of Genesis 12,

  330. listen to what God says.

  331. I will bless those

  332. who bless you

  333. and whoever curses you

  334. I will curse.

  335. It was right there

  336. in the beginning.

  337. This shouldn't surprise us.

  338. God said

  339. from the starting point,

  340. those who curse you,

  341. those who reject you,

  342. my people,

  343. my representative,

  344. reject me

  345. and they will face

  346. my curse.

  347. They will face

  348. my judgment.

  349. They will face

  350. my anger.

  351. God had promised this.

  352. Those who oppose

  353. his people

  354. would be cursed

  355. because rejecting

  356. God's people

  357. is the same

  358. as rejecting him

  359. and for that

  360. God promised

  361. his enemies

  362. would face judgment.

  363. David is not asking

  364. for permission

  365. to have revenge

  366. on his enemies.

  367. That is not what

  368. this psalm is about.

  369. He's asking for God

  370. to keep his promises,

  371. to keep his covenant,

  372. to bring justice,

  373. and to save him

  374. and that all

  375. goes together

  376. because in Genesis 12

  377. God promised

  378. that he would

  379. save his people.

  380. That's what the blessing is.

  381. That's why David

  382. can say in verse 13,

  383. I pray to you

  384. in the time of your favor

  385. in your great love,

  386. O God,

  387. answer me with your

  388. sure salvation.

  389. He's confident

  390. because God

  391. has already promised it

  392. and necessary

  393. to that salvation

  394. that God

  395. has promised

  396. is judgment

  397. on the enemies

  398. of God.

  399. See,

  400. there's no separation

  401. of those two things

  402. for King David.

  403. He doesn't see

  404. salvation as one request

  405. and the pouring out

  406. of his wrath

  407. as a second request.

  408. Salvation happens

  409. by God pouring out

  410. his wrath

  411. on his enemies.

  412. The pouring out

  413. of God's wrath

  414. on his enemies

  415. brings salvation

  416. for those who hope

  417. in God.

  418. They are one

  419. and the same action.

  420. Now,

  421. I want to say that again

  422. because this is really

  423. important

  424. and you need

  425. to grasp this.

  426. Without judgment,

  427. there is no salvation.

  428. Without judgment,

  429. there is no salvation.

  430. We get very nervous

  431. about the ideas

  432. of judgment

  433. and wrath,

  434. but biblically,

  435. you need judgment

  436. for salvation.

  437. That is how it works.

  438. That is how it worked

  439. from the beginning.

  440. That is how Israel

  441. was rescued from Egypt

  442. by God bringing judgment

  443. on the Egyptians

  444. for oppressing his people.

  445. That is the pattern

  446. that he builds

  447. throughout Scripture.

  448. Judgment is something

  449. that makes us nervous,

  450. maybe correctly

  451. because it is so horrific,

  452. but it is necessary

  453. for salvation.

  454. In this psalm,

  455. David's deep desire

  456. is God's glory.

  457. That is what he cares about

  458. more than anything else

  459. and we need to ask God

  460. to shape our hearts

  461. so that we desire

  462. his glory

  463. more than anything else.

  464. Our biggest struggle

  465. with this psalm

  466. is when we think enemy,

  467. we think those who hurt me.

  468. The possibility

  469. of being as offended

  470. by what people say

  471. about God

  472. or the way they interact

  473. with God

  474. is just foreign to us

  475. because we are so self-absorbed

  476. in our own world.

  477. It is easy to hate

  478. those who have hurt us,

  479. but only as God

  480. renews our hearts

  481. and teaches us

  482. to love what he loves

  483. can we begin

  484. to be offended by sin

  485. in the way that he is

  486. and that needs to be our prayer

  487. and that is the evidence

  488. of God's work

  489. in David's life

  490. that David is so offended

  491. by those who reject God

  492. that he is grieved

  493. to the point

  494. of being overwhelmed

  495. and crying out

  496. for God to do something.

  497. We need to ask God

  498. to be shaping our hearts

  499. that we might love him

  500. and desire his glory

  501. more than our own.

  502. But that is where

  503. the question of this psalm

  504. gets even more pointed.

  505. As we begin to see

  506. and hate sin

  507. with the same zeal

  508. that God does

  509. and with the same zeal

  510. that David does,

  511. how then do we respond

  512. to that sin?

  513. How then do we respond

  514. to injustice

  515. because in our world

  516. God is still rejected

  517. and hated

  518. by billions of people?

  519. In our world

  520. there is still oppression

  521. and injustice

  522. all around us

  523. so how would God

  524. have us respond?

  525. I mean we've already said

  526. that in this psalm

  527. David is praying

  528. in line with the covenant

  529. and promises

  530. that God made to him

  531. but the question is

  532. as we look at sin around us

  533. is it right for us

  534. to pray the same thing?

  535. Is it okay for us

  536. to call down God's judgment

  537. on the sinners

  538. that we see

  539. in the world around us?

  540. The New Testament

  541. quotes this psalm

  542. quite a lot

  543. and I want to quickly

  544. show you three quotes

  545. in John's Gospel.

  546. You don't need to flick there

  547. if you really fast

  548. go for it

  549. but if you want

  550. just scribble these down

  551. and check them out

  552. later on.

  553. In chapter 2

  554. of John's Gospel

  555. Jesus discovers

  556. that the temple

  557. is being used

  558. as a market

  559. and he is so angry

  560. that he fashions

  561. a whip for himself

  562. and goes through

  563. cracking his whip

  564. and turning over tables

  565. and chasing out

  566. the people

  567. who are in there

  568. and his disciples

  569. are watching him do this

  570. watching his anger

  571. burn

  572. at these people

  573. who have perverted

  574. the use of his

  575. father's house

  576. and suddenly

  577. for the disciples

  578. it clicks.

  579. Jesus is

  580. Psalm 69

    Psalms 69:9

  581. verse 9

  582. Zeal

  583. for God's house

  584. is consuming Jesus

  585. that is what's going on

  586. and John 2

  587. says they remember

  588. this psalm

  589. and realise

  590. Jesus is doing it.

  591. Second one

  592. in chapter 15

  593. Jesus is sitting down

  594. with his disciples

  595. and explaining

  596. that they're going

  597. to be persecuted

  598. just like him.

  599. He's explaining

  600. that they're going

  601. to hate you

  602. just like they hated me

  603. and at the end

  604. Jesus says

  605. the world's rejection

  606. and hatred of him

  607. is a fulfilment

  608. of Psalm 69

    Psalms 69:4

  609. verse 4

  610. those who hate me

  611. without reason

  612. outnumber the hairs

  613. of my head.

  614. He says

  615. that is me

  616. in that psalm.

  617. He says

  618. I'm experiencing

  619. all those things

  620. that David talked about

  621. and kind of

  622. foreshadowed earlier on

  623. this is about me

  624. and one last one

  625. in John chapter 19

    John 19 chapter mention

  626. Jesus is on the cross

  627. this is beginning

  628. at verse 28

  629. in John 9

  630. and Jesus has been

  631. whipped and bloodied

  632. he's about to die

  633. but one last thing

  634. he does

  635. so he's not sitting

  636. there thinking

  637. what boxes do

  638. I have to tick

  639. this was about him

  640. from the beginning

  641. and he says

  642. as he's hanging there

  643. so that the scripture

  644. might be fulfilled

  645. I'm thirsty

  646. and he's given a drink

  647. of wine vinegar

  648. Psalm 69

    Psalms 69:21

  649. verse 21

  650. they put gall

  651. in my food

  652. and gave me vinegar

  653. for my thirst

  654. it's not a coincidence

  655. this psalm

  656. is about God's

  657. anointed king

  658. and leader

  659. it is about

  660. King David

  661. absolutely

  662. it's first about

  663. King David

  664. but then

  665. it is about Jesus

  666. he fulfills

  667. this psalm

  668. he is the eternal king

  669. David was the temporary king

  670. the word used

  671. to describe

  672. David's role

  673. is the same word

  674. that's used

  675. to describe

  676. Jesus' saviour

  677. in the New Testament

  678. because the king

  679. was like the saviour

  680. but Jesus

  681. is the saviour

  682. of God's people

  683. Jesus lives out

  684. this psalm

  685. but the reaction

  686. that Jesus has

  687. to his enemies

  688. is very different

  689. to David's

  690. it's like Jesus

  691. is saying

  692. amen

  693. amen

  694. amen

  695. the whole way through

  696. and then he gets

  697. to verse 22

  698. and something shifts

  699. because

  700. in Gethsemane

  701. you see

  702. Jesus praying

  703. prayers

  704. that kind of

  705. reflect

  706. what David's

  707. feeling

  708. Jesus

  709. feeling

  710. that anguish

  711. of if there's

  712. another way

  713. God

  714. can you do it

  715. but we get

  716. to verse 22

  717. and it's where

  718. David and Jesus

  719. it becomes obvious

  720. just how different

  721. they are

  722. because Jesus'

  723. prayer is

  724. Father forgive them

  725. for they know

  726. not what they do

  727. see Jesus

  728. actually embodies

  729. the judgment

  730. that David

  731. prays for here

  732. he experiences

  733. the judgment

  734. he takes it

  735. on himself

  736. Jesus wraps up

  737. all of verse 22

  738. through to 28

  739. on himself

  740. Jesus on the cross

  741. is not just about

  742. physical pain

  743. there is significant

  744. physical pain

  745. but it is more

  746. about what this

  747. psalm talks about

  748. it is more about

  749. the fierce

  750. anger

  751. of a holy

  752. God

  753. being poured

  754. out

  755. on his son

  756. Jesus takes

  757. that judgment

  758. in verses 22

  759. to 28

  760. and rolls it up

  761. with the rejoicing

  762. that David has

  763. in verses 29

  764. to the end

  765. he combines

  766. them together

  767. and judgment

  768. and salvation

  769. become

  770. inseparably

  771. connected

  772. Jesus

  773. far surpasses

  774. anything

  775. that David

  776. could have

  777. even begun

  778. to hope

  779. for

  780. we get

  781. excited

  782. when we

  783. glory

  784. in the

  785. forgiveness

  786. that comes

  787. by the

  788. cross

  789. of our

  790. Savior

  791. but we

  792. cannot

  793. fully

  794. understand

  795. the

  796. forgiveness

  797. that we

  798. have

  799. we cannot

  800. fully

  801. understand

  802. the love

  803. that God

  804. has shown

  805. us

  806. unless we

  807. understand

  808. that at

  809. exactly

  810. the same

  811. time

  812. as that

  813. forgiveness

  814. was won

  815. the most

  816. direct

  817. and severe

  818. act of

  819. judgment

  820. that this

  821. world

  822. will ever

  823. know

  824. was being

  825. poured

  826. out

  827. until we

  828. grasp

  829. that all

  830. of God's

  831. wrath

  832. was poured

  833. out on

  834. Jesus

  835. instead of

  836. us

  837. we will

  838. never

  839. begin

  840. to

  841. understand

  842. the love

  843. that God

  844. has shown

  845. us

  846. can we

  847. pray this

  848. prayer

  849. as

  850. forgiven

  851. sinners

  852. wrath

  853. is not

  854. ours

  855. to give

  856. we

  857. have a

  858. covenant

  859. that is

  860. better than

  861. the one

  862. that David

  863. knew

  864. we have

  865. a covenant

  866. that guarantees

  867. our eternal

  868. salvation

  869. through the

  870. blood of

  871. our son

  872. and as

  873. forgiven

  874. sinners

  875. wrath

  876. is not

  877. ours

  878. to give

  879. it is

  880. God's

  881. alone

  882. as

  883. followers

  884. of

  885. Jesus

  886. the

  887. model

  888. that we

  889. are

  890. given

  891. is to

  892. love

  893. our

  894. enemies

  895. love

  896. for our

  897. brothers

  898. and our

  899. enemies

  900. there's a

  901. great set

  902. of verses

  903. in Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  904. chapter 12

  905. beginning at

  906. verse 17

  907. it says

  908. do not

  909. repay anyone

  910. evil for

  911. evil

  912. be careful

  913. to do

  914. what is

  915. right

  916. in the

  917. eyes

  918. of

  919. everybody

  920. if

  921. it

  922. is

  923. possible

  924. as

  925. far

  926. as

  927. it

  928. depends

  929. on

  930. you

  931. live

  932. at

  933. peace

  934. with

  935. everyone

  936. and

  937. here's

  938. really

  939. important

  940. do not

  941. take

  942. revenge

  943. my

  944. friends

  945. but leave

  946. room for

  947. God's

  948. wrath

  949. for it

  950. is

  951. written

  952. it

  953. is

  954. mine

  955. to

  956. avenge

  957. I

  958. will

  959. repay

  960. says

  961. the

  962. Lord

  963. on

  964. the

  965. contrary

  966. if

  967. your

  968. enemy

  969. is

  970. hungry

  971. feed

  972. him

  973. if

  974. he

  975. is

  976. thirsty

  977. give

  978. him

  979. something

  980. to

  981. drink

  982. in

  983. doing

  984. this

  985. you

  986. will

  987. heap

  988. burning

  989. coals

  990. on

  991. his

  992. head

  993. do

  994. not

  995. overcome

  996. by

  997. evil

  998. but

  999. overcome

  1000. evil

  1001. with

  1002. good

  1003. the

  1004. command

  1005. to

  1006. love

  1007. doesn't

  1008. remove

  1009. the

  1010. desire

  1011. for

  1012. justice

  1013. it

  1014. just

  1015. helps

  1016. us

  1017. understand

  1018. what

  1019. justice

  1020. really

  1021. is

  1022. justice

  1023. isn't

  1024. my

  1025. vindication

  1026. it's

  1027. God's

  1028. vindication

  1029. it's

  1030. those

  1031. who have

  1032. rejected

  1033. him

  1034. receiving

  1035. what

  1036. they

  1037. deserve

  1038. and

  1039. those

  1040. who have

  1041. trusted

  1042. in

  1043. the

  1044. son

  1045. being

  1046. given

  1047. the

  1048. life

  1049. that

  1050. they

  1051. do

  1052. not

  1053. so

  1054. how do

  1055. we

  1056. respond

  1057. to

  1058. injustice

  1059. and

  1060. sin

  1061. in

  1062. the

  1063. world

  1064. around

  1065. us

  1066. as

  1067. God

  1068. does

  1069. shape

  1070. our

  1071. heart

  1072. to

  1073. love

  1074. him

  1075. more

  1076. than

  1077. us

  1078. and

  1079. as

  1080. we

  1081. do

  1082. God

  1083. willing

  1084. become

  1085. more

  1086. offended

  1087. by

  1088. the

  1089. irreverence

  1090. that

  1091. we're

  1092. surrounded

  1093. by

  1094. how do

  1095. we

  1096. respond

  1097. like

  1098. David

  1099. ultimately

  1100. did

  1101. from

  1102. verse

  1103. 29

  1104. he

  1105. says

  1106. I'm

  1107. in

  1108. pain

  1109. and

  1110. distress

  1111. may

  1112. your

  1113. salvation

  1114. oh

  1115. God

  1116. protect

  1117. me

  1118. I

  1119. will

  1120. praise

  1121. God's

  1122. name

  1123. in

  1124. song

  1125. and

  1126. glorify

  1127. him

  1128. with

  1129. thanksgiving

  1130. this

  1131. will

  1132. please

  1133. the

  1134. Lord

  1135. more

  1136. than

  1137. an

  1138. ox

  1139. more

  1140. than

  1141. a

  1142. bull

  1143. with

  1144. its

  1145. horns

  1146. and

  1147. its

  1148. hoofs

  1149. and

  1150. he

  1151. rejoices

  1152. because

  1153. even

  1154. though

  1155. he's

  1156. surrounded

  1157. by

  1158. injustice

  1159. back

  1160. in

  1161. verse

  1162. 13

  1163. he

  1164. already

  1165. knows

  1166. that

  1167. salvation

  1168. is

  1169. sure

  1170. that

  1171. judgment

  1172. will

  1173. come

  1174. that

  1175. God

  1176. will

  1177. bring

  1178. justice

  1179. and

  1180. judgment

  1181. and

  1182. salvation

  1183. respond

  1184. like

  1185. David

  1186. ultimately

  1187. did

  1188. but

  1189. more

  1190. than

  1191. that

  1192. respond

  1193. like

  1194. Jesus

  1195. did

  1196. with

  1197. sacrificial

  1198. love

  1199. even

  1200. especially

  1201. for those

  1202. who persecute

  1203. us

  1204. because we

  1205. are confident

  1206. that God

  1207. will bring

  1208. justice

  1209. we are

  1210. confident

  1211. because in

  1212. Jesus

  1213. he's already

  1214. begun to do

  1215. it

  1216. and because

  1217. he has

  1218. promised

  1219. that when

  1220. Jesus

  1221. returns

  1222. he will

  1223. bring

  1224. justice

  1225. fully

  1226. and

  1227. forever

  1228. let's

  1229. pray

  1230. father

  1231. god

  1232. we

  1233. acknowledge

  1234. that

  1235. it is

  1236. our

  1237. hearts

  1238. first

  1239. desire

  1240. to

  1241. protect

  1242. ourselves

  1243. but we

  1244. ask that

  1245. you would

  1246. strip

  1247. that

  1248. away

  1249. please

  1250. shape our

  1251. hearts

  1252. that we

  1253. would love

  1254. you

  1255. as you

  1256. deserve

  1257. that we

  1258. would care

  1259. more about

  1260. your glory

  1261. and your

  1262. honor and

  1263. your name

  1264. and your

  1265. purpose than

  1266. any of our

  1267. own ambition

  1268. father

  1269. as you

  1270. shape us

  1271. and as we

  1272. recognize

  1273. just how

  1274. sinful

  1275. and dark

  1276. our world

  1277. is

  1278. may we

  1279. be moved

  1280. to love

  1281. like you

  1282. loved

  1283. maybe we

  1284. move to

  1285. love

  1286. sacrificially

  1287. humbly

  1288. without

  1289. judgment

  1290. knowing that

  1291. it's you

  1292. who judges

  1293. give us

  1294. the ability

  1295. to love

  1296. and forgive

  1297. those who

  1298. hurt us

  1299. again

  1300. knowing that

  1301. it's you

  1302. who judges

  1303. and that

  1304. your judgment

  1305. is sure

  1306. and right

  1307. and just

  1308. father

  1309. be enough

  1310. for us

  1311. that we

  1312. might be

  1313. content

  1314. in you

  1315. that we

  1316. might be

  1317. released

  1318. to love

  1319. especially

  1320. when it

  1321. hurts

  1322. father

  1323. we thank

  1324. you for

  1325. your son
