  1. As a youth, I lived a hedonistic lifestyle.

  2. My friends and I would get together

  3. and we would boast of our sexual exploits with women.

  4. I was into philosophy

  5. and was actively involved in a sect for nine years.

  6. I began an affair with a young woman

  7. and she was my lover for 13 years

  8. and she gave birth to our son.

  9. I came to Christ, I ditched my lover

  10. and I am famous for my prayer,

  11. grant me chastity and continence but not yet.

  12. Who am I?

  13. There was a certain ambiguity, that's right.

  14. But let me tell you that sects and philosophy did not do it for me

  15. and one day I threw myself down under a fig tree

  16. and I cried my eyes out and I repeatedly said to the Lord,

  17. how long, O Lord, how long, Lord, will you be angry to the uttermost?

  18. Do not be mindful of my old sins

  19. for I felt my past have a grip on me

  20. and it uttered wretched cries,

  21. how long, how long is it to be?

  22. Tomorrow, tomorrow, why not now?

  23. Why not put an end to my impure life in this very hour?

  24. Who am I?

  25. And as I was saying this

  26. and weeping in the bitter agony of my heart,

  27. suddenly I heard a voice from a nearby house

  28. chanting as if it might be a boy or a girl

  29. saying and repeating over and over again,

  30. pick up and read, pick up and read.

  31. And I hurried to the place where I'd put down the book

  32. and I seized it and I opened it

  33. and in silence I read the first passage on which my eyes lit

  34. and it said,

  35. not in riots and drunken parties,

  36. not in eroticism and indecencies,

  37. not in strife and rivalry,

  38. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ

  39. and make no provision for the flesh in its lusts.

  40. Romans 13.

  41. And I neither wished nor heeded to read further at once

  42. with the last words of this sentence,

  43. it was as if a light of relief

  44. from all anxiety flooded into my heart

  45. and all the shadows of doubt were dispelled.

  46. Who am I?

  47. And if you are here this morning,

  48. you can help us with the answer.

  49. Augustine.

  50. Look at that, they're trying to be very quiet down the front.

  51. You did a great job.

  52. Augustine.

  53. Bishop of Hippo in North Africa

  54. which is in the country of Algeria these days

  55. and it was written,

  56. God spoke a life-changing message,

  57. a life-changing word to Augustine

  58. in 387 AD

  59. out of Paul's letter to the Romans.

  60. And so as we come to Romans,

  61. we are coming to a book

  62. where God has given us a message

  63. with the power to transform people.

  64. Now we're going to spend a few weeks sampling Romans,

  65. we're not trying to cover the lot,

  66. we're just dipping our toe in,

  67. we're spending a fair bit of time in chapter one

  68. and then we're going to bounce to three other chapters on the way.

  69. In places it is a really difficult book,

  70. it's a wonderful book,

  71. it's the most complete explanation

  72. of the Christian faith in the Bible,

  73. it deals with sin and justification and righteousness

  74. and God's sovereign purposes for his,

  75. God's sovereign choices,

  76. his justice,

  77. God's eternal purposes for his people,

  78. the place of the Jews and the nations

  79. and how they should relate,

  80. how they might live with one another in Christ.

  81. If you go back across church history,

  82. you actually see that there's a whole series

  83. of really famous Christians

  84. that have been converted

  85. by encountering the words of this book.

  86. So people like Augustine

  87. and Martin Luther in the Reformation

  88. and George Whitefield

  89. in some of the revivals

  90. that happened in England

  91. and the United States

  92. and John Wesley who wrote hymns

  93. and was a great preacher,

  94. they all credit the letter to the Romans

  95. with their conversion

  96. and their establishment in Christ.

  97. I can tell you

  98. that when I came to Christ in 1977,

  99. I joined a Bible study group

  100. which I'd never been part of before,

  101. never knew what they were

  102. and our leader took us

  103. through Luke's Gospel that first year

  104. and I think in a way

  105. grounded me in the faith

  106. but the place where he went the second year,

  107. he took us verse by verse,

  108. passage by passage

  109. through the book of Romans

  110. and it was just a life-changing

  111. eye-opening place to come to

  112. in terms of being established in Christ

  113. and established in the Scriptures.

  114. I'd really like you to have it open,

  115. so if you've got Bibles with you tonight,

  116. have it open at Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  117. And it begins,

  118. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,

  119. called to be an apostle,

  120. set apart for the gospel of God

  121. and then in verse 7,

  122. to all those in Rome

  123. who are loved by God

  124. and called to be saints,

  125. grace to you

  126. and peace from God our Father

  127. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  128. So you see that Paul is a letter

  129. and its author is the apostle Paul.

  130. If you jump to the very end of Romans

  131. to chapter 16 verse 22

  132. and don't go there,

  133. it says,

  134. I, Tertius,

  135. who wrote this letter,

  136. greet you in the Lord.

  137. And so the words of the letter

  138. are the apostle Paul's,

  139. but they are written down

  140. by a scribe by the name of Tertius.

  141. It's a letter which is written

  142. to believers in Rome

  143. and he describes them

  144. as everybody who is loved by God

  145. and who is called to be holy.

  146. It's a grand letter.

  147. It's about God's really big picture purposes

  148. in Christ.

  149. And it begins again.

  150. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,

  151. called to be an apostle,

  152. set apart for the gospel of God,

  153. which he promised beforehand

  154. through his prophets

  155. in the Holy Scriptures,

  156. concerning his son,

  157. who was descended from David

  158. according to the flesh

  159. and was declared to be

  160. the son of God in power

  161. according to the spirit of holiness

  162. by his resurrection from the dead.

  163. Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  164. So God's message is a person,

  165. Jesus Christ.

  166. And Paul is not politically correct.

  167. He just comes straight out

  168. and unashamedly says,

  169. I am a slave of Jesus Christ.

  170. I think every one of your English translations

  171. says a servant of Jesus Christ,

  172. but it actually says,

  173. I'm a slave of Jesus Christ.

  174. I'm not ashamed to be a slave of Jesus Christ.

  175. I have been called into his servants.

  176. I have been given a mission.

  177. My life has become one

  178. of total obligation to Christ.

  179. I was transformed in a moment

  180. on the Damascus road

  181. when the Lord Jesus confronted me

  182. about my hatred of the Lord

  183. and my hatred of his people.

  184. And I have come to know

  185. and to treasure the Lord Jesus Christ.

  186. And he tells the story about his coming,

  187. not here,

  188. but in numbers of places

  189. in the New Testament.

  190. And in Acts 26,

  191. he says it in a very short way.

  192. He says,

  193. he tells the story again,

  194. he says,

  195. I said when I heard the voice,

  196. who are you, Lord?

  197. And the Lord said,

  198. I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.

  199. But rise and stand upon your feet

  200. for I have appeared to you

  201. for this very purpose,

  202. to appoint you as a servant

  203. and witness to the things

  204. in which you have seen me

  205. and to those things

  206. in which I will appear to you,

  207. delivering you from your people

  208. and from the Gentiles

  209. to whom I am sending you,

  210. the nations to whom I am sending you.

  211. He has been brought

  212. from darkness to light.

  213. The Lord Jesus has saved him

  214. for a purpose.

  215. He has commissioned him

  216. for a task.

  217. He's an apostle.

  218. It means a sent one.

  219. He's been sent by Jesus

  220. and God has sent him

  221. to the nations

  222. with his momentous announcement

  223. about the Lord Jesus Christ,

  224. God's great news.

  225. And in verse 2,

  226. it says about this message,

  227. it says,

  228. this is a message

  229. which God promised beforehand

  230. through his prophets

  231. in the Holy Scriptures

  232. concerning his son

  233. who was descended from David

  234. according to the flesh

  235. and was declared to be

  236. the son of God in power

  237. according to the spirit of holiness

  238. by his resurrection from the dead,

  239. Jesus Christ our Lord.

  240. Now it's a mouthful

  241. and it's earful

  242. and this is harder work

  243. than some of the passages

  244. we come to sometimes.

  245. But it's a much anticipated message.

  246. He's saying to us,

  247. this is a message

  248. about God's king

  249. which was promised

  250. in the Old Testament.

  251. The prophets were looking forward

  252. to the day

  253. when God's king

  254. would be revealed.

  255. And this king was born

  256. into a human family.

  257. He was born

  258. into Joseph and Mary's family.

  259. And his human ancestry

  260. goes back

  261. to King David.

  262. But he says more than that,

  263. he's not just got human ancestry,

  264. he's got divine ancestry.

  265. It was proved

  266. when the spirit of God

  267. raised him from the dead.

  268. And so you hear

  269. and you read in this passage

  270. that Father,

  271. Son and Holy Spirit

  272. are all working together.

  273. God's gospel

  274. is about the Father's Son

  275. who became flesh

  276. and died

  277. and was raised from the dead

  278. by the power of God's Spirit.

  279. So,

  280. this is not

  281. impersonal theology.

  282. This is not

  283. dry and dusty stuff.

  284. It's not an academic exercise.

  285. It's not like

  286. bringing Jesus down

  287. and putting him in the slab

  288. and the morgue

  289. and pulling him into bits

  290. and saying,

  291. oh, that's interesting.

  292. He's got vessels

  293. and a heart

  294. and kidneys

  295. and a brain

  296. and

  297. this is very personal.

  298. Paul refers

  299. very personally

  300. to Jesus Christ

  301. our Lord.

  302. He's somebody

  303. that he knew

  304. and he writes

  305. to people

  306. who know him

  307. personally as well.

  308. I think it's

  309. one of the great evidences

  310. of true Christian faith

  311. in somebody's life.

  312. You know,

  313. to be able to call Jesus

  314. my Lord

  315. was a huge change

  316. for me

  317. when I came to Christ

  318. because for the first time

  319. my prayers changed

  320. from being

  321. dear God

  322. to dear

  323. Lord Jesus.

  324. I knew him

  325. and I began

  326. to understand

  327. how important

  328. he is

  329. and I saw

  330. that Christian faith

  331. is personal

  332. and it's relationship

  333. it's not religion

  334. and Jesus

  335. is not somebody

  336. that we know about

  337. and we recite

  338. facts about

  339. he is somebody

  340. that we know

  341. he is not just

  342. God who is out there

  343. he's God

  344. in here.

  345. So Romans

  346. is a letter

  347. which is written

  348. to Christians

  349. who know a person

  350. their Lord

  351. Jesus Christ

  352. but there are also

  353. clues here

  354. to the big picture

  355. purpose of this letter

  356. and it's verse 5

  357. it says

  358. through whom

  359. we have received

  360. grace and apostleship

  361. to bring about

  362. the obedience

  363. of faith

  364. for the sake

  365. of his name

  366. among all the nations

  367. including you

  368. who are called

  369. to belong

  370. to Jesus Christ.

  371. So Paul's been given

  372. this apostolic mission

  373. for a purpose

  374. it's God's purpose

  375. it's not his purpose

  376. and the purpose

  377. expressed here

  378. is to bring about

  379. the obedience

  380. of faith

  381. for the sake

  382. of his name

  383. God's name

  384. among all the nations.

  385. It's an interesting

  386. expression

  387. it's a strange expression

  388. it's only used

  389. in one other place

  390. in the New Testament

  391. and that's in Romans

    Romans 16:26

  392. chapter 16

  393. verse 26

  394. and right at the end

  395. of Romans

  396. it says

  397. but this has now

  398. been disclosed

  399. and through the prophetic

  400. writings

  401. has been made known

  402. to all nations

  403. according to the command

  404. of the eternal God

  405. to bring about

  406. the obedience

  407. of faith.

  408. So the letter

  409. begins with the expression

  410. it ends with the expression

  411. and you could say

  412. in marketing terms

  413. and I think it's a pretty

  414. crass way to speak

  415. about the scriptures

  416. but in marketing terms

  417. God's gospel

  418. is results orientated.

  419. God has a purpose

  420. and his purpose

  421. is to bring men

  422. and women

  423. and boys

  424. and girls

  425. to himself

  426. we are brought

  427. to the obedience

  428. of faith.

  429. To come to Christ

  430. is to be brought

  431. to the obedience

  432. of faith.

  433. I don't know

  434. if you've ever

  435. talked about

  436. you coming to Christ

  437. in those terms before

  438. but that's a scriptural way

  439. of saying

  440. you have been brought

  441. to the obedience

  442. of faith.

  443. Very strange expression.

  444. He could have said

  445. something like

  446. well you've been brought

  447. to the obedience

  448. of good works

  449. but he doesn't.

  450. He says

  451. to the obedience

  452. of faith

  453. and he's highlighting

  454. for us

  455. that God

  456. wants us

  457. to obey him

  458. by putting

  459. our faith

  460. and trust

  461. in him.

  462. To believe

  463. in him.

  464. So if you ask

  465. the question

  466. would you want

  467. to be obedient

  468. to God

  469. and I think

  470. everybody here

  471. probably wants

  472. to be obedient

  473. to God

  474. well what does

  475. that mean?

  476. You can't live

  477. a good enough

  478. life

  479. believe

  480. the gospel.

  481. Be obedient

  482. to the gospel

  483. believe

  484. what God

  485. has said.

  486. So God

  487. has purposes

  488. he has strategy

  489. and his strategy

  490. is to tell

  491. who Christ

  492. is and what

  493. he has done

  494. as far

  495. and wide

  496. as you possibly

  497. can

  498. into all

  499. the world.

  500. God

  501. but obedience

  502. of faith

  503. is not

  504. about doing

  505. a whole lot

  506. of good

  507. works

  508. to achieve

  509. our salvation

  510. it is doing

  511. the one

  512. thing that

  513. God asks

  514. us to do

  515. in response

  516. to what

  517. Christ has

  518. done

  519. and that

  520. is to

  521. believe him.

  522. I love

  523. this story

  524. there's a story

  525. in a biography

  526. of a bloke

  527. called John

  528. Chapman

  529. and most of

  530. you won't

  531. know who

  532. he was

  533. but he

  534. was a

  535. pretty famous

  536. preacher

  537. around Sydney

  538. for a number

  539. of years

  540. he's an

  541. older man

  542. now

  543. and he

  544. tells a

  545. story in

  546. his biography

  547. about preaching

  548. at Sydney

  549. University

  550. one day

  551. and I'm

  552. going to

  553. read you

  554. verbatim

  555. what he

  556. says

  557. you may

  558. have heard

  559. me use

  560. it before

  561. but I

  562. was talking

  563. to a young

  564. bloke

  565. after a

  566. uni meeting

  567. and he

  568. said to me

  569. that what

  570. he was going

  571. to do

  572. was live

  573. it up

  574. until the

  575. end of

  576. his life

  577. have a

  578. really great

  579. time

  580. and then

  581. just before

  582. he died

  583. he would

  584. become a

  585. Christian

  586. and I

  587. said to

  588. him

  589. well how

  590. do you

  591. know

  592. that you'll

  593. be able

  594. to become

  595. one at

  596. the end

  597. and he

  598. said I

  599. could become

  600. a Christian

  601. whenever I

  602. like

  603. and I

  604. said you

  605. can only

  606. become one

  607. when God

  608. says

  609. and he

  610. insisted

  611. that he

  612. could do

  613. it so I

  614. said well

  615. if it's

  616. easy as

  617. that why

  618. don't you

  619. give us

  620. a demo

  621. why don't

  622. you show

  623. me how

  624. you'll pull

  625. it off

  626. how you'll

  627. do it by

  628. becoming a

  629. Christian

  630. right now

  631. if it's

  632. that easy

  633. you'll be able

  634. to pull it

  635. off anytime

  636. wouldn't

  637. you

  638. yeah

  639. but right

  640. now I

  641. don't want

  642. to

  643. come on

  644. you aren't

  645. trying very

  646. hard

  647. if you can

  648. really do

  649. it do it

  650. now should

  651. be a piece

  652. of cake

  653. and he

  654. started to

  655. get a bit

  656. touchy

  657. I don't

  658. want to

  659. try a bit

  660. harder

  661. want to

  662. want to

  663. I don't

  664. want to

  665. well

  666. I said

  667. that's the

  668. problem isn't

  669. it

  670. what makes

  671. you think

  672. you'll want

  673. to at

  674. the end

  675. young man

  676. was having

  677. himself on

  678. he had

  679. seen and

  680. heard the

  681. truth about

  682. the Lord

  683. Jesus Christ

  684. he knew it

  685. was true

  686. he knew it

  687. had consequences

  688. into eternity

  689. but for the

  690. present he

  691. refused to

  692. believe his

  693. heart was in

  694. fact very

  695. hard to

  696. God

  697. he was

  698. outside the

  699. kingdom

  700. he had not

  701. been brought

  702. to the

  703. obedience of

  704. faith

  705. he refused

  706. to exercise

  707. faith

  708. it was an

  709. act of the

  710. will to

  711. say I

  712. don't want

  713. God

  714. big question

  715. for me with

  716. Romans 1

  717. and it's

  718. probably not

  719. even occurring

  720. to you at

  721. the moment

  722. but I want

  723. to take you

  724. there and

  725. it is why

  726. does Paul

  727. want to

  728. minister in

  729. Rome

  730. the gospel

  731. was already

  732. there

  733. the church

  734. had begun

  735. it was

  736. established

  737. without his

  738. influence

  739. in chapter 1

  740. verse 14

  741. he said I

  742. am obligated

  743. both to

  744. Greeks and

  745. non-Greeks

  746. both to the

  747. wise and the

  748. foolish and

  749. that is why

  750. I am so eager

  751. to preach the

  752. gospel also to

  753. you who are

  754. at Rome

  755. who is he

  756. obligated to

  757. it's there in

  758. the verse

  759. Greeks and

  760. non-Greeks

  761. who isn't he

  762. obligated to

  763. people here

  764. this morning

  765. got to keep

  766. quiet

  767. who isn't

  768. he obligated

  769. to

  770. I'm not

  771. under

  772. obligation

  773. to

  774. the Jews

  775. well done

  776. Tashi

  777. he doesn't

  778. say the Jews

  779. I'm not

  780. under obligation

  781. to the Jews

  782. but I am

  783. under obligation

  784. to the Greeks

  785. and the non-Greeks

  786. the barbarians

  787. the babblers

  788. in other words

  789. he describes

  790. the whole of

  791. the world

  792. outside Judaism

  793. and why is he

  794. saying that

  795. because he's

  796. the apostle

  797. to the nations

  798. they're the

  799. ones that I

  800. have been

  801. sent to

  802. even though

  803. I always

  804. preach to

  805. the Jews

  806. when I

  807. first come

  808. to a city

  809. they are

  810. the ones

  811. I've been

  812. sent to

  813. I've been

  814. sent to

  815. the nations

  816. and I

  817. am under

  818. obligation

  819. to them

  820. but at the

  821. end of Romans

  822. in chapter 15

  823. he says

  824. it's always

  825. been my

  826. ambition to

  827. preach the

  828. gospel where

  829. Christ was

  830. not known

  831. so that I

  832. would not be

  833. building on

  834. someone else's

  835. foundation

  836. and you read

  837. that and you

  838. think well he

  839. seems to

  840. contradict himself

  841. on the one

  842. hand he's

  843. saying I

  844. am eager to

  845. preach the

  846. gospel to

  847. you and on

  848. the other my

  849. ambition is to

  850. preach the

  851. gospel where

  852. Christ is not

  853. known but he

  854. knows it's

  855. known there

  856. and I think he

  857. gives some

  858. reasons in

  859. verse 11

  860. I long to

  861. see you so

  862. that I may

  863. impart to you

  864. some spiritual

  865. gift to make

  866. you strong

  867. that is that

  868. you and I

  869. may be mutually

  870. encouraged by

  871. each other's

  872. faith

  873. I do not

  874. want you to

  875. be unaware

  876. brothers that

  877. I planned

  878. many times to

  879. come to you

  880. but have been

  881. prevented from

  882. doing so until

  883. now in order

  884. that I might

  885. have a harvest

  886. among you just

  887. as I have had

  888. among the

  889. other nations

  890. now I want to

  891. explain something

  892. quickly to you

  893. that that is

  894. quite tricky

  895. so I need you

  896. to listen it's a

  897. little bit

  898. different I want

  899. to give some

  900. history in the

  901. year 49 AD

  902. so this is and

  903. the letter to

  904. Romans is written

  905. in 58 AD

  906. nine years before

  907. Romans was

  908. written the

  909. emperor Claudius

  910. kicked all the

  911. Jews out of

  912. Rome and

  913. there's a Roman

  914. historian called

  915. Suetonius who

  916. is no friend of

  917. Christians and he

  918. wrote a note that

  919. the emperor did

  920. this because the

  921. Jews were fighting

  922. over a

  923. Christos

  924. now you need to

  925. know that in

  926. Greek the name

  927. Christ is

  928. Christos

  929. in Acts chapter

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  930. 18 this event is

  931. confirmed if you

  932. ever want to think

  933. about you know the

  934. the New Testament

  935. is thoroughly

  936. historical

  937. in Acts chapter

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  938. 18 this event is

  939. confirmed because in

  940. verse 1 it says

  941. Paul left Athens

  942. and went to

  943. Corinth and there

  944. he met a Jew

  945. named Aquila a

  946. native of Pontus

  947. who had recently

  948. come from Italy

  949. with his wife

  950. Priscilla because

  951. Claudius had

  952. ordered all the

  953. Jews to leave

  954. Rome Paul went

  955. to see them and

  956. because he was a

  957. tent maker as they

  958. were he stayed and

  959. worked with them

  960. and every

  961. Sabbath he

  962. reasoned in the

  963. synagogue trying to

  964. persuade Jews and

  965. Greeks

  966. so what we're

  967. reading is that

  968. the emperor in

  969. Rome

  970. the king of the

  971. world

  972. was fed up with

  973. the behaviour of

  974. Jews and so fed

  975. up with the

  976. behaviour of Jews

  977. in Rome

  978. that he kicked

  979. them out of the

  980. city by imperial

  981. decree

  982. now when he did

  983. that he did not

  984. make a distinction

  985. between Jews who

  986. believed in Jesus

  987. and Jews who

  988. didn't believe in

  989. Jesus

  990. they're all Jews

  991. and so they're all

  992. out

  993. and he effectively

  994. says I'm sick of

  995. your bickering get

  996. out of here

  997. and what that would

  998. have meant at that

  999. moment was that

  1000. that all that was

  1001. left of the church

  1002. were believers who

  1003. were not Jewish to

  1004. start with

  1005. and so Jewish

  1006. customs like food

  1007. laws and special

  1008. days would no

  1009. longer have been a

  1010. big deal for Gentile

  1011. or international

  1012. Christians in Rome

  1013. the church in Rome

  1014. has suddenly become

  1015. an international

  1016. church

  1017. and they didn't

  1018. have to

  1019. have to worry

  1020. about fitting in

  1021. with the believers

  1022. of Jewish heritage

  1023. now this is not

  1024. the same

  1025. but think about

  1026. this

  1027. if

  1028. imagine the

  1029. Australian government

  1030. decided to kick

  1031. everybody out of

  1032. Chatswood

  1033. with Anglo

  1034. heritage

  1035. get on the

  1036. boats

  1037. stop the boats

  1038. get on the boats

  1039. and send them

  1040. back to Europe

  1041. now I'm looking

  1042. around and I

  1043. think there's an

  1044. awful lot of us

1045. who would be out of

  1046. here we'd be gone

  1047. and there's a few

1048. of us who would be

  1049. left which is

  1050. really good

  1051. and if only

  1052. mainland Chinese

  1053. were left

  1054. Brian how many

  1055. Asians in

  1056. Chatswood at the

  1057. moment last

  1058. census

  1059. 46%

  1060. Asian

  1061. percentage

  1062. there's more

  1063. isn't there

  1064. Brian's done all

  1065. the statistics out

  1066. of the census for

  1067. us so we're just

  1068. looking at that the

  1069. other day I think

  1070. it's a really big

  1071. percentage in

  1072. Chatswood which is

  1073. pretty obvious if

  1074. you go down the

  1075. street on Sunday

  1076. but if only mainland

  1077. Chinese were left

  1078. they may have very

  1079. little idea about

  1080. our traditions and

  1081. our history

  1082. they may not even

  1083. realise that we

  1084. had a book of

  1085. common prayer I

  1086. would imagine that

  1087. many of you tonight

  1088. wouldn't even think

  1089. twice about what a

  1090. book of common

  1091. prayer is

  1092. and guess what

  1093. they would have to

  1094. build and run this

  1095. church as best they

  1096. could with the

  1097. Bible in their

  1098. hand and with

  1099. believers around

  1100. them

  1101. do you think

  1102. they could do

  1103. that

  1104. of course they

  1105. could

  1106. if all this was

  1107. stripped away

  1108. could a church

  1109. happen and be run

  1110. here in Chatswood

  1111. without all the

  1112. external stuff that

  1113. we've got

  1114. of course it

  1115. could

  1116. and so we

  1117. would suddenly

  1118. or the people who

  1119. were left would

  1120. be free from

  1121. defending an

  1122. institution

  1123. and they

  1124. would have a

  1125. fresh start in

  1126. pursuing Christ

  1127. it'd be a

  1128. blessing to us

  1129. sometimes to take

  1130. all this stuff

  1131. from us this

  1132. stuff's a blessing

  1133. in one way but

  1134. it's a distraction

  1135. in others

  1136. and so it's a bit

  1137. like that in Rome

  1138. you don't have any

  1139. Jews left or very

  1140. few Jews left

  1141. confusing things with

  1142. issues like

  1143. circumcision or

  1144. eating prawns or

  1145. food offered to

  1146. idols

  1147. the Roman

  1148. Christians could

  1149. pursue and

  1150. worship Christ

  1151. without being

  1152. encumbered by the

  1153. baggage from a

  1154. different culture

  1155. and a different

  1156. people

  1157. and we're not

  1158. slandering the

  1159. Jews because we

  1160. know what the

  1161. book of Hebrews

  1162. says the book of

  1163. Hebrews says that

  1164. the temple and

  1165. the system of

  1166. worship in

  1167. Jerusalem was

  1168. only ever a

  1169. shadow of what

  1170. God would achieve

  1171. in Christ

  1172. Christ

  1173. they didn't

  1174. need

  1175. so the

  1176. international

  1177. Christians did

  1178. not need the

  1179. same mindset

  1180. change that the

  1181. Jewish believers

  1182. did

  1183. and so I think

  1184. that Paul writes

  1185. this gospel to

  1186. Rome to strengthen

  1187. the Christian

  1188. church there

  1189. they are an

  1190. international church

  1191. he wants to make

  1192. sure that they

  1193. know the true

  1194. gospel

  1195. they've been

  1196. established at

  1197. the centre of

  1198. the empire

  1199. God has given

  1200. them a strategic

  1201. ministry to

  1202. believers who

  1203. know nothing of

  1204. Judaism

  1205. and Paul wants

  1206. them to be clear

  1207. about the freedom

  1208. that they have in

  1209. Christ

  1210. and I think he

  1211. helps them

  1212. pastorally

  1213. some of the

  1214. believers of

  1215. Jewish heritage

  1216. it's nine years

  1217. later they're

  1218. beginning to come

  1219. back into Rome

  1220. Priscilla and

  1221. Aquila are

  1222. mentioned in

  1223. Romans chapter

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  1224. 16 they're no

  1225. longer in

  1226. Corinth they're

  1227. now back in

  1228. Rome

  1229. and so Paul

  1230. spends a lot

  1231. of time in

  1232. this letter

  1233. explaining the

  1234. place and the

  1235. significance of

  1236. the Jews in

  1237. God's purposes

  1238. which you see

  1239. in chapters

  1240. 9 to 11

  1241. and he

  1242. explains how

  1243. the church

  1244. is to get on

  1245. with one another

  1246. with different

  1247. beliefs and

  1248. backgrounds and

  1249. that's what goes

  1250. on in chapters

  1251. 13 and 14

  1252. when it speaks

  1253. about the

  1254. weak and the

  1255. strong you

  1256. know you

  1257. who are

  1258. strong ought

  1259. to bear with

  1260. the failings

  1261. of those who

  1262. are weak and

  1263. I think it's

  1264. very clearly

  1265. that he sees

  1266. the Jewish

  1267. believers as

  1268. the weak ones

  1269. in that

  1270. circumstance

  1271. so brothers

  1272. and sisters

  1273. Romans is a

  1274. glorious description

  1275. of God's big

  1276. picture purposes

  1277. and what they

  1278. mean it's

  1279. about God

  1280. it's God's

  1281. gospel not

  1282. our gospel

  1283. and it's

  1284. about what

  1285. God wants

  1286. from his

  1287. people

  1288. and you

  1289. see very

  1290. clearly in

  1291. this letter

  1292. that God

  1293. is strategic

  1294. he is

  1295. purposeful

  1296. he's not

  1297. muddling

  1298. along wondering

  1299. what he will

  1300. do next

  1301. it's been

  1302. his strategy

  1303. since before

  1304. he called

  1305. Abraham

  1306. and his

  1307. purpose is

  1308. to bring

  1309. all the

  1310. nations under

  1311. his blessing

  1312. and he's

  1313. not someone

  1314. who looks

  1315. at different

  1316. nations and

  1317. discriminates

  1318. like we

  1319. do and

  1320. we think

  1321. why would

  1322. God want

  1323. them or

  1324. how could

  1325. he possibly

  1326. tap into

  1327. them

  1328. he said

  1329. to Abraham

  1330. all peoples

  1331. on earth

  1332. will be

  1333. blessed

  1334. through you

  1335. Jews

  1336. had narrowly

  1337. kept the

  1338. promises to

  1339. themselves

  1340. as a

  1341. generalisation

  1342. and God

  1343. and God

  1344. seized

  1345. one Jew

  1346. a Jew

  1347. who hated

  1348. him

  1349. and hated

  1350. his people

  1351. the apostle

  1352. Paul

  1353. and he

  1354. made him

  1355. his own

  1356. and he

  1357. sent him

  1358. on an

  1359. international

  1360. mission

  1361. telling people

  1362. what God

  1363. had done

  1364. in Christ

  1365. and so

  1366. God's purpose

  1367. is to bring

  1368. men and

  1369. women to

  1370. himself

  1371. and he

  1372. does it

  1373. with a

  1374. message

  1375. and the

  1376. message is

  1377. the precious

  1378. gospel

  1379. of our

  1380. Lord Jesus

  1381. Christ

  1382. that's what

  1383. Romans is

  1384. about

  1385. strategy is

  1386. not a

  1387. dirty word

  1388. all of us

  1389. think strategically

  1390. I think in

  1391. our church

  1392. we are a

  1393. church

  1394. we've been

  1395. an older

  1396. church

  1397. which is

  1398. probably

  1399. in the

  1400. process

  1401. of renewing

  1402. and

  1403. when a

  1404. church

  1405. of 300

  1406. people

  1407. which might

  1408. be our

  1409. church

  1410. supports

  1411. 9 or

  1412. 10

  1413. people

  1414. doing

  1415. ministry

  1416. in other

  1417. places

  1418. that's

  1419. actually

  1420. a

  1421. strategy

  1422. for

  1423. bringing

  1424. God's

  1425. message

  1426. to the

  1427. world

  1428. and so

  1429. Tim

  1430. who was

  1431. here last

  1432. week

  1433. from the

  1434. Middle East

  1435. and spoke

  1436. to us

  1437. and Kylie

  1438. quietly

  1439. teaching

  1440. people

  1441. in the

  1442. Middle East

  1443. they are

  1444. working

  1445. strategically

  1446. to strengthen

  1447. the church

  1448. in a place

  1449. where it is

  1450. really dangerous

  1451. to be a

  1452. believer

  1453. it's a

  1454. great thing

  1455. when we

  1456. support

  1457. strategic

  1458. ministry

  1459. to other

  1460. places

  1461. 300

  1462. people

  1463. providing

  1464. resources

  1465. to many

  1466. ministries

  1467. beyond here

  1468. that's just

  1469. terrific

  1470. and we

  1471. ought to

  1472. continue

  1473. to do

  1474. it

  1475. but it's

  1476. really important

  1477. for us

  1478. to be

  1479. strategic

  1480. in

  1481. Chatswood

  1482. or in

  1483. our

  1484. workplace

  1485. or in

  1486. our school

  1487. or in

  1488. our

  1489. university

  1490. community

  1491. and I

  1492. don't know

  1493. if you

  1494. go off

  1495. to uni

  1496. and you

  1497. see the

  1498. great

  1499. mass of

  1500. people

  1501. who don't

  1502. know

  1503. Christ

  1504. you can

  1505. sometimes

  1506. throw your

  1507. hands in

  1508. the air

  1509. and say

  1510. where do I

  1511. start

  1512. what do I

  1513. do

  1514. and I

  1515. want to

  1516. say

  1517. under God

  1518. to take

  1519. personal

  1520. responsibility

  1521. for what

  1522. God has

  1523. given

  1524. you

  1525. don't

  1526. look around

  1527. at everybody

  1528. else

  1529. think about

  1530. where God

  1531. has placed

  1532. you

  1533. the family

  1534. that you're

  1535. in

  1536. the sporting

  1537. team that

  1538. you play

  1539. in

  1540. the workplace

  1541. you find

  1542. yourself in

  1543. the school

  1544. or the

  1545. university

  1546. he's

  1547. taking

  1548. you to

  1549. I said

  1550. to mums

  1551. and bubs

  1552. the other

  1553. day

  1554. don't ask

  1555. me why

  1556. I was at

  1557. mums

  1558. and bubs

  1559. I'm not

  1560. really a

  1561. mum

  1562. and I'm

  1563. not a

  1564. bub

  1565. or I

  1566. was a

  1567. bub

  1568. but it

  1569. was a

  1570. long time

  1571. ago

  1572. but I

  1573. said to

  1574. them I

  1575. don't think

  1576. that God

  1577. is trying

  1578. to add

  1579. to our

  1580. load

  1581. and asking

  1582. us to

  1583. do more

  1584. and more

  1585. and more

  1586. so that we

  1587. end up being

  1588. burdened

  1589. Christians

  1590. falling down

  1591. all over

  1592. the place

  1593. with too

  1594. much to do

  1595. because he's

  1596. a hard

  1597. taskmaster

  1598. he's not

  1599. like an

  1600. Olympic

  1601. God

  1602. saying you

  1603. he's not

  1604. doing that

  1605. he calls

  1606. us to be

  1607. faithful

  1608. with what

  1609. he has

  1610. given us

  1611. in the

  1612. place

  1613. in which

  1614. he has

  1615. put us

  1616. he's a

  1617. strategic

  1618. God

  1619. he's able

  1620. to use

  1621. all his

  1622. people

  1623. to his

  1624. glory

  1625. and so

  1626. if every

  1627. one of

  1628. us

  1629. was

  1630. nurturing

  1631. just one

  1632. relationship

  1633. where we

  1634. were bold

  1635. to speak

  1636. to our

  1637. friend

  1638. about

  1639. Christ

  1640. and I

  1641. don't

  1642. mean

  1643. going

  1644. having

  1645. coffee

  1646. tomorrow

  1647. and say

  1648. I've

  1649. really

  1650. got to

  1651. tell you

  1652. about

  1653. Christ

  1654. because

  1655. the

  1656. preacher

  1657. told me

  1658. to

  1659. last

  1660. night

  1661. night

  1662. I

  1663. mean

  1664. nurturing

  1665. friendship

  1666. being a

  1667. real

  1668. friend

  1669. being in

  1670. relationship

  1671. but in

  1672. the

  1673. context

  1674. of the

  1675. relationship

  1676. being

  1677. unashamed

  1678. about your

  1679. faith in

  1680. the Lord

  1681. Jesus

  1682. Christ

  1683. and praying

  1684. for the

  1685. opportunities

  1686. to speak

  1687. about him

  1688. because if

  1689. we all

  1690. did that

  1691. then 300

  1692. people from

  1693. here are

  1694. going out

  1695. into the

  1696. year and

  1697. into the

  1698. week or

  1699. wherever

  1700. we're going

  1701. and we

  1702. are having

  1703. an impact

  1704. all over

  1705. the place

  1706. with more

  1707. than 300

  1708. people

  1709. it's a

  1710. big

  1711. gospel

  1712. it's a

  1713. big task

  1714. but not

  1715. too big

  1716. I took

  1717. great

  1718. encouragement

  1719. another

  1720. we war

  1721. story

  1722. tonight

  1723. how's

  1724. that

  1725. two in

  1726. a row

  1727. sorry

  1728. Joyce

  1729. but I

  1730. worked for

  1731. a while

  1732. with a

  1733. man called

  1734. Gary Stewart

  1735. who works out

  1736. in Walgett

  1737. these days

  1738. and we were

  1739. chewing the fat

  1740. down at the river

  1741. for one of our

  1742. staff meetings

  1743. one day

  1744. I think we were

  1745. catching carp out

  1746. of the river

  1747. and talking

  1748. ministry

  1749. that's my

  1750. justification

  1751. and I

  1752. think he

  1753. was feeling

  1754. overwhelmed

  1755. at the

  1756. task

  1757. because he

  1758. could see

  1759. the needs

  1760. of people

  1761. and a number

  1762. who didn't

  1763. know Jesus

  1764. and he

  1765. just said

  1766. it's such

  1767. a big

  1768. job

  1769. what do

  1770. we do

  1771. at church

  1772. how do

  1773. we minister

  1774. and I

  1775. think the

  1776. grace of

  1777. God spoke

  1778. to me

  1779. and said

  1780. one at a

  1781. time

  1782. we work

  1783. one person

  1784. at a time

  1785. in the

  1786. relationships

  1787. that we

  1788. have

  1789. and we

  1790. take the

  1791. opportunities

  1792. that God

  1793. has given

  1794. us

  1795. so don't

  1796. be

  1797. overwhelmed

  1798. be faithful

  1799. to Christ

  1800. with what

  1801. God has

  1802. given you

  1803. because the

  1804. big picture

  1805. is accomplished

  1806. by doing the

  1807. little things

  1808. by being

  1809. faithful

  1810. and taking

  1811. the opportunities

  1812. that God

  1813. has given

  1814. you

  1815. Amen

  1816. I'm going

  1817. to pray

  1818. we do pray

  1819. Lord Jesus

  1820. that you

  1821. would help

  1822. us

  1823. to see

  1824. the wonderful

  1825. task that you

  1826. have set

  1827. before us

  1828. to wonder

  1829. at the

  1830. gospel

  1831. to see

  1832. the powerful

  1833. transformation

  1834. that you

  1835. have given

  1836. us in this

  1837. extraordinary

  1838. message

  1839. about the

  1840. Lord Jesus

  1841. Christ

  1842. and we

  1843. pray tonight

  1844. for each

  1845. of us

  1846. that we

  1847. wouldn't

  1848. walk from

  1849. here

  1850. discouraged

  1851. and overwhelmed

  1852. by the

  1853. size of the

  1854. task

  1855. but that each

  1856. of us might

  1857. be encouraged

  1858. in the power

  1859. of your

  1860. spirit to

  1861. build genuine

  1862. friendships

  1863. with people

  1864. where we

  1865. are not

  1866. ashamed of

  1867. Christ

  1868. and where we

  1869. bring a word

  1870. to bear in

  1871. season as you

  1872. give the

  1873. opportunity

  1874. but we do

  1875. pray Lord

  1876. Jesus

  1877. that you

  1878. would give

  1879. us the

  1880. opportunity

  1881. that you

  1882. would open

  1883. doors

  1884. and that we

  1885. would find

  1886. grace and

  1887. empowerment

  1888. to be faithful

  1889. to you

  1890. to enjoy

  1891. and delight

  1892. in your good

  1893. gospel and to

  1894. see its impact

  1895. in the lives

  1896. of many people

  1897. around us

  1898. and we pray

  1899. this in Jesus

  1900. precious name

  1901. Amen

  1902. movement

  1903. back

  1904. and hear

  1905. what you

  1906. want to

  1907. see

  1908. if you

  1909. find

  1910. quelque chose

  1911. to be

  1912. to me

  1913. to be

  1914. the

  1915. niet

  1916. Teeth
